K8N Neo Platinum No Video, Long Repeating Beep

I recently RMA'D almost every part to my computer, as it wasn't posting, booting, or doing much of anything.
I bought a new case, and powersupply.
I got everything back, put it back together, and zing! it worked.
Then one day, after running windows update (not sure what it was updating). It goes to restart, shuts down. Then I have no video. Only a computer that appears to run fine, except no video, and one long repeating beep.

Kingston HyperX 512mb (I have 2 modules but switch out 1 at a time in the spirit of troubleshooting)

I have a K8N Neo Platinum for about 4 years without big problems. Two days ago I dismounted teh pc to clean and put a new HD and when I mounted again it did not work.

I have already had some problems like this before with power failures but magically things worked again. This time was teh same. I got things working some times at random (really random lol) by taking power cables, reseting bios and turning back on but teh problem reapeared when I put HDD back and did not work again when I removed it. Now I can't seem to get it to display anything.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Two things that are quite common:
Do not attach PS2 keyboard when there is power in the system.
Do attach USB keyboards when you are up and running in Windows.
This is not it, but Logitech keyboard drivers often complicate things.
I do use a PS2 kbd but never had problems with it (unlike teh PS2 mouse). I do not think it's kbd fault because it won't POST with or without it.

MSI k8n neo platinum hangs after post single beep

Today I powered off my computer, and when I tried to power it back up the x850 fan just runs at full speed, and never drops to idle and the screen stays dark. If I reset the bios then it will post as far as asking to press Del to enter setup, but freezes at that point. This thing has been running like a champ and this is the first problem I've ever had! I unhooked/unplugged everything but the keyboard/video/ram/cpu. Tried running with four different memory modules in single channel and dual channel but no luck there either. None of the hardware below has been changed in the last six months. Any ideas? TIA!

With only one 7600GT installed you won't be able to play most of the new games in full detail because of lacking 3d power although Core2Duo installed. 3. Buying one gig of ddr2 isn't very clever either. More and more applications need more than 1 gig (for example vista!). When changing to ddr2, change to 2 gig dual channel kit.
4. Getting $300 for your old stuff seems quite optimistic to me.
Conclusion: Save your money for better vga! Take back 7600gt, keep old vga and 4000+, wait for a little time and buy Geforce 8800 GTS. Increase of gaming performance would be unbelieveable. After providing high end vga you can upgrade to C2D in next step and receive a noticeable increase of performance in all kinds of applications.
Hmm.. very good points. I went and read some reviews of the upcoming 8600 and 8800. They are quite impressive for the money. I believe I'll return everything and find a limp-a-long $50 mobo to replace the dead msi. It looks like holding out for quad core with dual SLI is the real gain over my current setup. On a side note I won't be running vista until after sp1 or possible sp2. No tangible benefit to me! What suggestions do you have for a solid performing mobo for the following:
socket 939
4 240pin DDR slots
AGP (My X850 XT is still strong enough for everything I do)
SATA 1.5 (no need for the faster one as I have none of those drives)

Boot problems with K8N NEO Platinum(no video). SOLVED

I have this board for a few months now, but this week, when powering the system, it gave me no video.
It reads the HD and after a little while all the lights in the D-Bracket go green. But still no video.
There are other simptoms that can help the diagnosis: sometimes i do get video, the system powers up perfectly. This happens when I repeatedly press the reset button, or try powering on and off, on and off...
I don't think it is cold boot problem, since when I successfully turn on the system and then turn it off, the same boot problem occurs I I try turning it on again.
Another thing is that when I turn it off through Windows, it doesnt actually turn off: the screen ges black, but the HD leds still blink for a looong time. I have to turn it off manually, then. Sometimes it actually turns off, but turn itself on again after 1 second.
So if the D-Bracket sais its all good, then what is bad?
My System specs are

One long repeating beep and no video output

Sometimes when switching on a system build with KT6 Delta , I get one long repeating beep and no video output. The problem usually is solved if I unplug the monitor cable from the vga card and plug it in again. Still, I am thinking why does this happen since the cable seems to be connected fine?

1 Beep: DRAM refresh failure
Explanation: The system is having a problem accessing the system memory to refresh it. Refreshing is done on all system memory to keep its contents active.

Jerky video and sound with my k8n neo platinum

I wonder if any of you have had a similar problem.
My system: K8N Neo Platinum Nvidia nForce 3 250 Gb, AMD 64fx 3200+, 1 gig memory Kingston PC 3200, Gigabyte Nvidia GForce Fx 5200 128 AGP video card, HD Seagate ST2120026A 120 gig, WD 40 gig, Toshiba DVD, Lite on DVD-RW. OS XP Pro SP2. Display Samsumg 17 Syncmaster 710V.
The system worked like a champ for about a month, the all of a sudden it started playing videos and audio in a jerke mode, it would play a few frames and then pause for a fraction of a second and then start again.
Please can anyone help?

Try uninstalling the graphics card drivers and then installing the latest ones.
Also try defragging hard drive and cleaning unecessary programs from the computer and run windows update.

K8N Neo Platinum no beeps or post

Just got my K8N Neo Platinum, installed my psu (jeantech 400w twin 12v rails) ati 7800 pro and 1gb (2 x 512mb) crucial ballistic ram.
Only to get no post or bleeps. Took graphics card out - nothing, removed mem - nothing. Tried a qtec psu, and generic memory still nothing.
I am using a Winchester 3200, which was in an AV8 motherboard, but this stopped working. The led panel shows 4 leds (2 red & 2 orange-ish) seems this means that cpu is knackerd.
Anyone got any ideas?

K8N Neo Platinum not passing POST

Hello,
I have just bought an MSI K8N Neo Platinum OEM and it will not pass POST. I have gone through all the items in the Sticky section, but still it won't pass. I don't know what to do.
Here's the hardware I have hooked up:
MSI K8N Neo Platinum motherboard (has "MS-7030 VER:1" written on it)
Athlon 64 3000+ CPU, 512 K L2 Cache (ADA3000AEP4AP)
Kingston RAM (KVR400X64C3A/512)
Radeon 7200 graphics card (about 4 years old)
Seasonic S12 380 PSU
Thermalright XP-90 heatsink w/ 90mm Nexus fan
I have hooked up the 24-pin power cable to the 20-pin motherboard slot using the 24-to-20 pin adaptor supplied with the PSU.
The 12v 4-pin CPU power cable is also plugged in.
The graphics card is plugged into the AGP slot. There is no other power connection needed.
I have installed the CPU with a Thermalright XP90 heatsink and a Nexus 90 mm quiet fan.
I have hooked up the fan to the motherboard C_FAN1 slot.
I have installed the RAM (Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512) into DIMM slot 1.
I attached the case fans to the power supply and hooked up the case speaker.
I have also hooked up the front panel power and reset switches.
I bought the motherboard OEM, so it did not include a D-bracket. I have built a pseudo-D-bracket using two-colour LEDs and plugged it into the D-bracket slot.
With this work done, I plugged in the power supply. The power supply has an on/off switch on the back. As soon as I turn on the switch, the computer tries to boot up. All the fans start spinning (power supply, CPU cooler, case fans, video card fan). Nothing appears on the screen. The case speaker emits a long beep, waits about 5 seconds, then beeps again, and continues this pattern forever. The documentation says that this indicates a memory issue.
My homemade D-bracket shows the following: initially, all the LEDs are red. Then, the LED across JLED1 pins 7 & 8 turns green (with all other LEDs red). I assume that this corresponds to LED 1 being lit, although it really looks like it should be LED 4. Next, the LED across JLED1 pins 5 & 6 turns green (with all other LEDs red). Once again, I assume this corresponds to LED 2 being lit, although it looks like it should be LED 3. I looked this up and the documentation indicates a memory error. To solve the problem, I have tried the following things:
1. Hitting reset. Same boot sequence.
2. Clearing the CMOS using the JBAT1 jumper. I left the jumper at "clear data" for about 10 minutes, then switched it back. Same boot sequence as before.
3. Clearing the CMOS by removing the battery. I left the battery out for 3 minutes, then 30 minutes, then 8 hours. Same boot sequence.
4. Removing the motherboard from the case. I placed the motherboard on the anti-static bag it came in. Repeated steps 1, 2 and 3. Nothing.
5. Move the RAM to DIMM slot 2 or 3. Tried steps 1, 2 and 3 again. The boot-up sequence was the same.
6. Different RAM. I have also tried using OCZ 400 MHz 512MB unbuffered DDR memory (OCZ400512V3). Performed steps 1-5 with identical results.
7. No RAM. Same boot problem.
8. No video card. Ditto.
9. No RAM or video card. Exactly the same as before.
As far as I can tell, all components are supported. The only item I am very unsure of is the graphics card. I do not have the exact specifications on it. When it is in my other computer, the driver details identify it only as a "Radeon 7200". However, it does have the "golden finger" shown at www.msicomputer.com/support/sup_tshoot.asp#1_3. Even if the video card is not compatible, it seems like the beep codes and D-bracket codes both indicate memory issues.
The only thing that I have noticed that is weird (other than the fact that the computer won't pass POST) is that when I turn on the power supply, the computer immediately boots up. I don't know whether or not this is normal.
Lastly, I do not know the current BIOS version. Is it possible that the BIOS is an early version that does not support my memory/CPU/video card? I bought the mobo OEM, so I do not know what BIOS it has loaded. Is there some way I can figure this out without passing POST? This is driving me absolutely insane.

Make sure the fan you are using for the xp90 is supporting RPM readouts .
Then try another AGP gfx card , sometimes you can have a no post due to that the graphics adapter wont start .
Take the system bare bone ( mobo + cpu + ram + gfx )
Have any award beep codes ? , note them down and decode them against

Remove AGP + ram too .
The mobo shall beep (endless beeping )
Insert the ram , the mobo shall beep - missing gfx .
Got this far and you know cpu + memory initialize but have problems with gfx or other devices
later in the post/init process .
Do not have any usb devices connected to internal or external connectors ,
note that the USBOC pin un JUSB1/JUSB2 is NOT to be connected .
Also try altering between ps2 and usb keyboard as this also has caused non post situation for people .

K8N Neo Platinum - Reboot problems

This is very strange.......
Just bare with me as I try to explain.
I just orderd a new system to build from scratch and all seemed to go ok.
I have:
Motherboard: K8N Neo Platinum
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 - 2800+
VIDEO: ATI Radeon 9600XT - 128 MB
RAM: 1GB DDR PC2700 CL2.5 - SAMSUNG - 1 Stick
SOUND: I also have an old PCI sound card in there.
HD: none connected currently
CASE: XG Viper Gaming Case
On my first boot everything seemed to go ok. I saw the post screen. The CPU, the Memory were all recognized the only thing is I don't have a HD in it right now so there was no OS to boot. I went into BIOS and double checked the settings. I noticed the RT clock was off slightly so I changed it. Looked around and made sure the AGP port was selected as my primary video adapter. Besides that I didn't change any other settings.
When I saved the BIOS settings and the computer did an automatic reboot I got nothing except a repeating "BEEP" and a black screen.
I waited a few seconds (around 20) then turned the computer on and it started up fine again. This time I didn't go into BIOS just let it boot up to the point where it said INVALID system disk. I did a reboot with the same problem - a repeating "BEEP" and a black screen.
A warm reboot doesn't do anything - It only comes back up with a black screen and the repeating beeps. Also If I power down and up too quick I also get no other effect than the black screen and repeating beeps.
The only way to get the post screen is to let it sit around 20 seconds and boot up.
Even If I let it sit over night, boot it up, see the post, and reboot 2 seconds after I get the post screen, the black screen and the beeping occurs (so I am not too sure its a CPU heat issue).
also on a side note the DBracket has some strange lights on it. - IF I am looking at the Dbracket from the right orientation - I think it is giving a "Initalizing Keyboard Controller" error when I get the black screen. It is either that or the Video Interface error. - 3 RED LIGHTS and 1 GREEN LIGHT.
Any sugestions or help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED !!!

OK - I pulled out the 9600XT and put in a 9000 saphire radeon card with the same effects.....
when I pull out the Video card and the memory I get the same black screen and error code of course...
second - I put the memory in and left the video card out only and got a signle long beep.. then no additional beeps after that but of course no video...
third - I put in the video card (the 9600 XT) and left the memory out and got the identical black screen and repeating long beeps.
last - I put the memory back in.. booted up fine... then tried to reboot and I was back to the black screen with multiple long beeps..
one interesting thing that I learned from this was - when there was no memory in I got the same "beeps" as I do when I try to reboot with the memory in... could it be something to do with the memory?.... or is it still leaning toward a PSU problem..
(Unfortunatly I don't have access to another stick of memory right now,... nor a sufficient PSU for the system...)

K8N Neo Platinum AGP failure

Hi,
I just got my K8N Neo Platinum and when I tried to boot up the system the
system speaker makes one long and two short beeps and nothing else happens...
Tried with several AGP graphics cards, and when I tried with and old PCI graphics card
it worked fine... Updated the BIOS to version 1.5 and that did no difference...
It's not the PSU cause I have an Antec Truepower 550W and that should be enough...
And it boots fine with the PCI vga so I dont think that it's the TwinMOS RAM either....
Anyway my system contains of:
Amd Athlon 64 3400+
1Gb TwinMos 400MHz DDR
2x200GB Seagate Barracuda Sata drives
Geforce FX5800
Anyone who have any idea of what to do, checked the MSI site for that beep signal but it didnt
have any information on what to do to solve the problem...

It is unlikely that it is your power supply. That Antec has enough juice to power up the system. Try disconnecting both Sata drives and anything else that may be connected other than the mouse and the video. See if it will then get to the post screen. If not, take out one stick of ram and try with one stick. You might also try clearing cmos as your bios may have to be cleared. Sometimes getting things down to the minimum components on the system and clearing cmos will get it going. If you read through about a thousand posts on various forums you will find people who have had similiar problems. Many have been resolved through swapping memory or switching the ports that they use for sata. This is usually a compatability issue. It is very likely that none of your components are defective in any way. AMD 64 and the corresponding motherboards are just real picky about what they like.

K8N Neo Platinum not working

Hi guys,
I finally tired of my old PC and decided to go for a new AMD64+ system. I ordered these components:
A64 3000+
K8N Neo Platinum
2 x 512 MB Corsair XMS3200 2-3-3-6 RAM
I turn the finished PC on, the fans power on, the harddisks make noise and... nothing. The monitor doesn't recieve a signal. According to the DLED-bracket, it hangs on 'Resource Assignment' every time, just before the harddisks are started.
I have tried just about everything, even booting with only the videocard (both R9700 Pro and GeForce 3), still no dice.
I have tried running only one stick of RAM in the different slots, not a success.
I don't have any other CPU or RAM to test it with, so those options are out.
Another culprit is the PSU, but I have a new Mist (Factory modded Fortron / Source) 480 W PSU capable of 22 Amps at the 12V line, so that shouldn't be the problem. It works with good ratings in my old PC.
Any more ideas? It does look like I will be taking it back on Monday.

Stats are posted, but as I mentioned, even the barest possible setup with a RAM stick and videocard refuses to work. That's without keyboard, mouse and hard disk.
I'm not sure what I can add to that other than saying I can't even get into the BIOS since I get no video.
I forgot one thing: The PC speaker beeps once for about a second. Slightly longer than my old PC did, but not long enough for me to really think about it. Definitely nothing compared to the crescendo I got once when I forgot the extral power to the R9700

As far as a fix, I just kept wrestling with it till it would finally boot (off/on, disconnecting / reconnecting leads, etc .... nothing ever consistantly did the trick) but I always manged sooner or later to get a boot. Pressing and holding the DEL key or quickly tapping the DEL key as the PC was powered-on seemed to have some connection with success, but only after many failures of the same thing. As I said, very inconsistant. A warm boot, once the PC was running, usually went fine, barring any other unrelated issues.
By the way, my D-Bracket error code always hung at one green LED, lower left in the 4 LED array, which I think indicates initialization of the keyboard controller. Whether this was the cause (keyboard controller) or it just happened to be the point in time where some other problem arose which prevented boot is hard to determine.
Damn, that's a bad experience. I haven't tried banging keys around, perhaps I should try that.
I had a chat with another guy who had a problem akin to this. In his case, the BIOS was borked. I'm really not sure if I'm going to ask for a new Neo board or go for the Gigabyte one instead if I can't fix it.
Funny how I never had any trouble with Via boards before while nForce3 is a general bad experience for me

K8N Neo Platinum dead?

I've had this K8N Neo Platinum for about two years now, have worked like a charm so far, but only so far. Few weeks ago, I updated my pc and the K8N was needed for a secondary comp. So I installed new sempron cpu, new rams and old GF6600 but it didn't boot. Speaker gives constant long beeps with breaks, like "beeeeeep......beeeeeep.....beeeeeep...." and the D-bracket hangs in "initializing keyboard controller" phase.
First I reseted the bios (all kind of power off), no effect. Still hangs the same way. Tried different ram (some bulk ddr400 and some slight better twinmos stuff. The very same twinmos-memories I tried, worked back in days 100% with this problematic mobo), no good. Then I thought that maybe the bios is too old to support sempron. I got my old AMD 64 3000+ cpu and tried to flash newer bios with that cpu, but no boot for me (reseted bios after every hardware change). Tried even with two different PSU's (both antec and the other one used to work this mobo, both work on different pc's), nothing.
The sempron and 64 cpu's both work on my different mobo (Abit NV8), all 4 memories work independently or in pairs as well on that NV8. Twinmos-rams were used with the K8N earlier. Both PSU's I tested, work on the other pc perfectly as well. I tried to boot with and without display card and ram, the result remains the same. Beeping and the same d-bracket code. (Only way to get the hangup in different phase is to remove CPU.) CPU-fan was connected. The board was removed from the case for tests and I tried with and without the front panel connectors (power switch, leds, speaker etc.) The 4pin ATX12V cable was connected, as was display card's external powercable.
List of hardware tried with that mobo, everything works with at least Abit NV8:
CPUs: AMD 64 3000+ (used to work with this K8N too) , AMD Sempron 2800+
RAM: Some bulk cheap low-quality 2x 512MB DDR400, Twinmos dual channel kit 2x 512MB DDR400 (something like that, worked with this "broken" mobo too back in days)
PSU: Antec Smartpower 350W, Antec Truepower 350W (the old PSU of that K8N-pc)

I'm out of ideas currently. Is the board officially broken?

Dumb question - is the power supply connector installed correctly? I have seen some 20+4 connectors that can get installed the wrong way - reversed or a row or two offset. Results are unpleasant to board.
Have you taken a close look at both sides of the board for foregin objects? The power going on sounds like something is bridging the 'start' pins on the power connector (I don't remember which ones they are) or something else down the line - maybe the header where the power/reset switches connect or any trace related to these. It is possible the board got some metal flakes or other conductive material on it - it might happen when screws are removed or from some other source. Also can happen when semiconductors are fried internally, but then you have a dead horse.
I assume you have tried it completely stripped - CPU, one stick of RAM, very basic video card, nothing else (not even a kbd). That should give you something on the screen if its little brains are coming up.
But - 'initializing KBD controller' is a nasty error code. I have seen dead boards with this one going back many years to original PC. The KBD controller, some variant of an 8048/8052, is a vulnerable part since it is connected to the outside world via KBD cable and a likely static entry path, esp. when mobo is air mounted w/o good local ground plane as it would have if mounted in a metal case. Unless you can find some reversible FOD (foregin object damage) I would write this one off and move on to something else. Too bad.

K8N NEO Platinum 4 Red LED at Startup

I installed a new MSI K8N Neo Platinum mainboard in my computer in December 2005, and my computer has been a pain ever since. My problem is 85% of the time when I turn the power on it just won't boot up, I get 4 Red LED lights. If I shut it off and on half a dozen to 20 times. During one of those times it will bootup normal and work great. Shutdowns are normal.
My Family hates this and won't use it. This computer has been nicknamed the MSI Little Witch. I have had it down to barebones out of case with just graphic card, 1 memory stick, IDE harddrive, keyboard and mouse, it will do same thing. I've unplugged and replugged everything countless times. It still does it. I have tried Maxtor, Samsung, and Western Digital hard drives with fresh install of Windows XP Pro, it still does same thing. I have alternated memory sticks, same thing. It will warm reboot as long as I don't powerdown, but if I shut the power off it will not reboot until it cools down about 20 minutes. Then I can go through the same startup problems as I normally have. I have not done any overclocking.
Anyone have a fix to this fustrating problem?

I have the same problem with my K8N Neo Platinum. Except mine seems to occur after the motherboard has not had power after sometime. For example, it happened every time I moved my computer when I moved into and out of my dorm room. I don't know if its the same "cooling down" time you're talking about, but what usually fixes it for me (at least temporarily) is killing the power to the machine while it is on. Regular soft resets won't work for many tries, but when the computer is on with all 4 red LEDs i'll flip the power switch on the power supply. That usually makes it work fine. Also another thing that seemed to intermittently trigger it is changes to the BIOS. A CMOS reset would not fix that either. I would have to flip the power switch and kill the power. Then after starting it
up again it would be okay. I have also tried multiple combinations of different cpus, memory sticks, and video cards. I also made sure there were no shorts to ground anywhere.
Also after a year of solid operation (with the exception of this problem) I started to get Machine Check Exception BSODs in XP. I think this was because of a possible bad stick of RAM, because that seemed to cause lockups in the way beginning of the Windows setup (where it is loading files such as Windows Executive, etc). When I removed it and put another stick in, the windows installation would go fine. But, that did not fix the issue with this motherboard.
I've had so many problems with the multiple K8N Neo Platinums I have purchased. This is absolutely ridiculous I'm extremely POed at MSI for the widespread K8N series problems. I am usually very tolerant to companies when they have problems with products because I understand that problems and glitches can easily occur in mass production and design. It is virtually impossible to make a "perfect" product from the start. But the lack of response and concern from MSI about this is ridiculous. MSI did make an excellent motherboard here--if you can get a working one.
