K8N Neo platinum + RADEON 9500PRO problems

Hi I got my AMD64 system up and running friday, but I got some major problems with the stability! The computer randomly "freezes to death", everything freezes, no bsod, only option is the sweet restart button :( This especially happens after I have quited games or 3dmark (which is really wierd). It is very unstable, often freezes right after boot in windows. I have now tested the system for an hour with a TNT2 card with no freezes. Could my problem be a hardware conflict? My voltages is normal (12v 3,3v and 5v are reportet ok by MBM5, with 12.10v on the 12v rail, btw mbm5 reported the same voltages with 9500pro installed).
The 9500PRO card worked fine on my old abit kt7a via 133a chipset and t-bird 1,4ghz.
Edit: I have all the newest drivers for all my HW + newst bios reported by msi live update (1.40)
HW:
MSI K8N NEO Platinum
AMD64 3000+
Radeon 9500PRO (now testing TNT2)
2 IDE disks and 1 s-ata disk
dvd-rw
4 case fan with coolermaster aerogate 2

dont worry about your memory- it'll prob be ok if memtest doesnt fire any errors. - its probably your PSU
For a start disconnect any extra fans you got running on your system
then boot and test it - if that works - the problem is your PSU - usually the main problem for the Athlon 64 boards - oh and any other crap like front function panels etc. etc.
If it is the PSU i'd recommend getting a Overclockers one - they rock - dont get the one I've got - it only JUST cuts it - i used to get the same probs as you until I disconnected all my internal fans - no probs now.
If its not the PSU - dunno mate - solly!
It probably is the PSU as you dont know your PSU loads - you need a minimum of around 20AMPS on the 12Volt rail.

  • Msi k8n neo platinum ps2 keyboard problem

Hi. I'm having issues with my msi k8n neo platinum motherboard. I've read about 50 posts on these forums regarding the supposed ps2 keyboard issues with recent msi boards. However none of them seems to address my current situation.
Like many  others, when I power up my system the cpu fan spins for like 3 seconds then everything comes to a halt.
I tried many things to get my system to boot and the only thing that works is plugging my ps2 keyboard into the ps2 mouse port and moving the ps2 mouse into a usb port with an adapter.
It seems there's no hope for fixing the problem other than RMA'ing, but I thought I would add to the pile of complaints stacking up against the MSI boards.

if u had read the threads a little more u might have found a solution that seems to have worked 4 many - a usb keyboard usb Keyboard if u go this route dont forget to enable usb kb in bios
Edit: This Thread Summarises the situation PS2 keyboard/mouse causes random shutdowns or doesnt work

  • MSI K8N NEO PLATINUM (RAM/HD problem/mobo problem?) [SOLVED]

    my setup:
    windows xp pro sp2
    amd athlon 64 3200+
    msi k8n neo plat - 7030 - bios 2.1
    x800 xt vid
    sound blaster audigy 2
    kingston valueram pc3200 2x512 cas 3-3-3-8
    ps = antec 430 watt truepower power supply (20 A on 12V)
I dont know if you guys remember my but i created a topic on here a while back about how my keyboard and mouse suddenly stopped working, well that turned out to be that the msi k8n neo platinum just went bad. So i RMA'd it and recently got the replacement board (with latest bios already installed). It worked completely fine for about a day. Well that same day i got it back, i installed a Logitech G7 USB wireless mouse. after i installed it, i began getting numerous windows stop blue screen errrors, even after i removed the mouse from control panel. So i figured i should format because to rule out everything and start fresh. So i did a FULL format and attempted the reinstall windows again. AFTER the format and BEFORE windows attempted the continue installation, i got the same stop error. I figured now this was a hardware problem. So first i tested RAM. I got the latest version of memtest86 and let it run for 4 hours (11 passes) with NO errors at all. Secondly, i got a western digital hard drive diagnostic program to test for failing hard drive and again no problems with that. I still suspected ram so i tried to boot with only 1 stick installed (in first slot), however the PC didnt boot at all (cleared cmos too). So i moved it to the second slot and cleared cmos again and this time it posted but it just hangs at a cursor and does nothing, same thing happened with third slot. I tried this same procedure clearning cmos each time with the second ram stick and got the SAME results. Shouldnt the motherboard boot with only 1 ram stick installed? Did MSI RMA me another bad board? Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Can you give us what the D-Bracket was showing ie
    R R
    G R
As an example this means "Initializing Keyboard Controller"
You will find this information in the manual page 2-23. (On mine) under Hardware Setup
Also can you please do all your tests with the ps2 keyboard and mouse and for now leave your Logitech G7 USB wireless mouse to one side.
    Russell
for two sticks of ram = RR
                                   GG
for one stick of ram = GR
                                  GG
as for the g7, it hasnt been plugged in at all, i took it out long ago.. as for the ram, the timing was set to 2T, no overclocking, i will try 2.7 v and let you know, but for the record, it has been running at normal voltage settings for about a year perfectly fine.

  • K8N Neo Platinum - unusual sound problem

    Hi all,
I am running a K8N Neo Platinum based PC with specs as follows:
    1024 Mb RAM
    200 Gb HDD
    256Mb GeForce4 Video
    16x DVD/CD-RW
I'm trying to use the onboard sound, at this point with just 2 speakers, and until today I thought the sound wasn't working at all. But after going into Windows Media Player I found that I can play music and get sound as per normal - I just get no sound from anything else! The driver is the Realtek AC'97 version 5.10.0.5830 from the MSI site. Does anyone know why this could be happening?

    1. Yes, my sound card is set as the default under all categories, and I have checked the 'use default devices only' box just to make sure.
    2. I know there have been two other topics covering similar problems, but one of these could get no sound at all, and the other only didn't get sound when trying to play DVD's - that one's got nothing to do with this problem, I'd be interested to know if the other is similar, but either way neither of them have been solved!

  • K8N Neo Platinum: Floppy drive problem

    Hi,
I can not get the motherboard to detect the floppy drive. As soon as I turn on the computer, the LED light on the floppy drive is on. I made sure that "1.44M, 3.5in" is selected in "Standard CMOS Features." I made sure floppy is NOT selected as a boot device. Also, made sure "Seek Floppy" is disabled. I tried using the supplied rounded floppy cable and used my old cable. I swapped the connection of the cable also. I also checked the connector pins to make sure they are not bent. Nother seems to work. The floppy is simply not detected.
    Please help!!!
    My system configuration is:
MSI K8N Neo Platinum, BIOS: 1.3
LSI Logic Ultra 320 SCSI controller
    eVGA 6800 GT
    A64 3200+
    512MB Samsung memory
    SoundBlaster Live!
Plextor CDRW (don't remember the model number)
Toshiba DVD-ROM (dont' remember the model number)
    Fujitsure 15K RPM SCSI HDD
    Antec True380 power supply
    Thanks.
    Henry

You did say you'd swapped the cable, right? Have you tried turning the connector upside down at the floppy drive end?
I had a problem with the floppy light being on all the time and the drive not being detected. It turned out the connector in the back of the floppy drive was upside down! I was sure I had it the right way up the first time so it's easily done!

  • K8N Neo Platinum (MS7030) LAN Problems ?

    Hi guys,
After some period of stable use of the motherboard I ended up with a new problem. All of a sudden, my Local Area Network {Connection} (which I have never used since I bought the motherboard), disappeared. I tried to reinstall all the drivers but I didn't find any solution. Anyone has any idea?
As you might suspect I payed attention to this "side-effect" (as I had characterized it initially) of loss of icon both in tray and Network Connections (inside Control Panel) now that I have to use it. While googling around for the problem I found another person stating that people in this forum had similar problems in the past. Unfortunatelly I couldn't find anything when using advanced search in MSI forum. Does anybody know something?
All help will be deeply appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    Dimis

You were absolutely right about your thoughts guys. Seems, that when I was experimenting with my newly bought system I changed that parameter of MAC to DISABLED. Hence the problems occurred.
P.S.: I must update the above post (experiments) since I have many things to say about AMD processors regarding their performance and justify their superiority (according to my opinion) against Intel processors. All in all, now that most conflicts are resolved with my mobo (or I simply know that some of them can't be resolved e.g. Keyboard power while computer is turned off), I must say that it is a good motherboard regarding performance.
    Thank you both again,
    Dimis

total 1434GB (1.4tb) (there is no raid i`m just using like normal)!
the problem began when i upgraded to another 300GB yesterday ! i get an error from windows xp (on the system tray) that i/o error unable to write some .tmp file etc!
however i tried diff sata ports (also plugged off my all my ide devices) ! still i would get the same problem! sometimes on the 300gb as well. i`m not sure weather ishould reinstall windows ? btw i`m using the 5.03 drivers from the liveupdate!
can any one please tell me what to do ! i dont want to disturb all the data !! :( ! so i plugged off my 300gb for now ! everything is working fine !

Well, I dont know if this helps at all but,  I have been having windows lock up on me ever since my 2x 250GB maxtors in RAID 0 configuration for a total of 500GB was my boot drive.  I had an average of 3 minutes in windows, and then COMPLETE lockup.  I'm not sure if it has anything to do with NCQ with the new maxtors, but I'm back to using "1" raptor as my boot drive, and my 500GB's of maxtor RAID 0 config as my gaming HDD's, and KNOCK ON WOOD, nothing has locked up YET!  I wish i knew why I can't use my super fast raid 0 config for my boot drive, but I rather be stable, then having to cross my fiingers, and hope my PC doesn't lock up.

  • K8N Neo Platinum general OCing problems

something is definitely whack here. I can run totally stable at HTT 225 (11x, 4x, 1:1) but if i try for HTT 226 it refuses to boot no matter what (even at 4x, 1x,

got same rig cept 4 memory
did same oc didnt bother with clockgen memory on nearly same settings as yours runs long term stable @225
will run fine at 226 until load > bout 85% on cpu then has a tendency to reboot.
did this a while back have more or less accepted thats the wall.
like this set up as it maxed my mem b/width rather than other permutations May try tweaking vcore a little more havnt had to really push it to get there, at least not quiet as much as other pps

  • USB mouse problem - K8N Neo Platinum

I have a Razer Boomslang 2000 USB mouse. Ever since I got my new motherboard, the K8N Neo Platinum, It has problems when i turn the power for a long time - overnight. When I turn it back on in the morning the mouse refuses to work. I then have to manually pull it out of the USB port and plug it back in, in order for it to work. This is extremely frustrating.
I have windows xp pro sp1 all fully up-to-date and the latest 1.2 bios and 5.03 chipset drivers.
Any ideas on how I could fix this ??

  • Post problem with K8N Neo Platinum

I am assembling a system for a friend and it hangs according to D-Bracket2 on Processor initialization (Led 1:red, led 2:green, led 3: green led 4: red)
    Specs
    PSU:   Codegen 350W    ( 3,3V   14A
                                           5V     30A
                                           12V    15A  )
VGA:   Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
    CPU:   AMD Athlon 3000+
    HDD:   Seagate 7200.7  120GB  in   SATA1-port
    DVD:   MSI DR8-A  DVD Burner
    RAM:   M-Tec 512MB  DDR400
If the problem is the processor it should hang on Power On (all leds red), right?
There's some damage done to CPU fan connector so the sensor wire from the CPU fan might have no connection to the mobo. How about ESD-damage, can it cause this?
Another thing I might have done wrong is connecting front panel connectors.
I am just hoping and praying that the processor is OK and the mobo causes this.

Thanks to RacerX for answering but the problem wasn't the PSU.
Mobo caused it and I replaced it.  I think it was the physical damage I mentioned in the first post. I also changed hdd from SATA1-port to SATA3-port but I don't think it matters.
Now everything works fine so +12V/15 Amps is enough.
Does the K8N Neo Platinum hang on Processor Init if it doesn't detect CPU Cooler?

  • K8N Neo Platinum - Reboot problems

    This is very strange.......
Just bare with me as I try to explain.
I just orderd a new system to build from scratch and all seemed to go ok.
    I have:
    Motherboard: K8N Neo Platinum
    CPU: AMD Athlon 64 - 2800+
    VIDEO: ATI Radeon 9600XT - 128 MB
    RAM: 1GB DDR PC2700 CL2.5 - SAMSUNG - 1 Stick
SOUND: I also have an old PCI sound card in there.
    HD: none connected currently
    CASE: XG Viper Gaming Case
On my first boot everything seemed to go ok. I saw the post screen. The CPU, the Memory were all recognized the only thing is I don't have a HD in it right now so there was no OS to boot. I went into BIOS and double checked the settings. I noticed the RT clock was off slightly so I changed it. Looked around and made sure the AGP port was selected as my primary video adapter. Besides that I didn't change any other settings.
When I saved the BIOS settings and the computer did an automatic reboot I got nothing except a repeating "BEEP" and a black screen.
I waited a few seconds (around 20) then turned the computer on and it started up fine again. This time I didn't go into BIOS just let it boot up to the point where it said INVALID system disk. I did a reboot with the same problem - a repeating "BEEP" and a black screen.
A warm reboot doesn't do anything - It only comes back up with a black screen and the repeating beeps. Also If I power down and up too quick I also get no other effect than the black screen and repeating beeps.
The only way to get the post screen is to let it sit around 20 seconds and boot up.
Even If I let it sit over night, boot it up, see the post, and reboot 2 seconds after I get the post screen, the black screen and the beeping occurs (so I am not too sure its a CPU heat issue).
also on a side note the DBracket has some strange lights on it.  - IF I am looking at the Dbracket from the right orientation - I think it is giving a "Initalizing Keyboard Controller" error when I get the black screen. It is either that or the Video Interface error. - 3 RED LIGHTS and 1 GREEN LIGHT.
Any sugestions or help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED !!!
    Thank you !!!!!!

OK - I pulled out the 9600XT and put in a 9000 saphire radeon card with the same effects.....
when I pull out the Video card and the memory I get the same black screen and error code of course...
second - I put the memory in and left the video card out only and got a signle long beep.. then no additional beeps after that but of course no video...
third - I put in the video card (the 9600 XT) and left the memory out and got the identical black screen and repeating long beeps.
last - I put the memory back in.. booted up fine... then tried to reboot and I was back to the black screen with multiple long beeps..
one interesting thing that I learned from this was - when there was no memory in I got the same "beeps" as I do when I try to reboot with the memory in... could it be something to do with the memory?.... or is it still leaning toward a PSU problem..
(Unfortunatly I don't have access to another stick of memory right now,... nor a sufficient PSU for the system...)
    HELP !!!!

  • MSI k8n neo platinum post problem

I just bought a 2nd hand K8N neo platinum and I can't get it to post, I have reduced down to 1 stick of ram(tried all slots) vga and cpu running out of case. I have an ultra 600 psu that certainly should be doing the buisness as everything was fine on an NF7S-V2 up until 1/2 hour prior.
On the led device it's starting 4 red then after a couple of seconds it goes 1 red 2 red 3 green 4 red which I found relates to keyboard controller. I've tried with various keyboards but no joy. I get nothing on the screen at all but that's the next stage in post.
My memory is Twinmos 3200 twin x 2 x 512 double sided, which I saw in the sticky can be troublesome.
    Any body got any ideas?

i am having an almost identical problem.
First the system wont go past post, then i realised it would but only boot if i had the USB mouse unplugged (i noticed the d-brackets lights changed after i unplugged the mouse)
then i was able to get to windows, however i couldn't do much (mouse wouldnt detect if replugged, keyboard not detected - all lights off)
So i tried clearing the CMOS
now i am having the same problem, except this time i get CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded
then it tells me to press f1 to continue to del to enter setup, which i cant do since the keyboard wont work. so now im totally bamboozled
I've tried changing the PSU as well with no luck (both were 500watts)
Funny thing is, the pc having the problem is identical to the pc im writing on now, presonally i think the motherboard is not v good, since alot of people have this problem or similar to it. (and yes im using the keyboard and mouse now, that i tested on the other pc)
    SPECS:
    MSI k8N Neo Platinum

    AMD 64 3000+
    1GB Geil Memory
    Maxtor 160GB
    500watt Magna Dual Fans
Will check what the D-bracket says and will report back.
    ok here goes:
    (with usb mouse plugged in)
    1= green
    2= red
    3=red
    4=green
(without usb mouse plugged in) - but bare in mind i cant press f1 (no keyboard) to continue else i would probably be able to get to windows.
    1= green
    2= green
    3=green

that's it. it posts ok, has frozen there once tho. but every time since then post is ok.  Installed WinXP fine - until the install process tried to reboot into WinXP proper - where it continually reset itself until eventually it got in - and reported it had rescued itself from a serious error - I can sit in windows seemingly indefinitely - using the hard-drive to browse through the windows installation.  now the problem is when I instert a disc into the dvd drive the computer tries to read it - little disc icon on the arrow etc. then it hangs and the computer resets....  any ideas??  the computer shop I got the PSU from says my configuration is "categorically" not using 550W of power -  what do you guys think?
    thanks for any help, cheers

  • K8N Neo Platinum & Sapphire Radeon 9600

Okay, so this issue has been addressed in a few places, but I couldn't seem to find a definitive answer.
Is the Sapphire Radeon 9600 incompatible with the MSI K8N Neo Platinum motherboard?
    Here's my story:
Just upgraded my case, motherboard and CPU (see sig for specs)
Clean install of Windows XP Pro, SP2
Installed ATI Catalyst drivers from ATI website
Reboot and Windows Device Manager shows an error with my video card.  "The device cannot start (Code 10)"  Now this is odd because I just pulled this video card out of my old P3 system and it worked like a charm.
Did some research on the forums, and I've tried all of the following:
    Changed AGP voltage from 1.5 -> 1.6
    Turned FastWrites on AND off
    Installed Omega drivers instead
Used Shift-F2 & Alt-F3 in BIOS to turn off NV/ATI Speedup
Installed new Antec PSU with 21A 12V rail (which should be more than 'nuff to just power my mobo, CPU, vid card, and hard drive, which is all I plugged in to it)
All to no avail.  I still have the exact same problem.  Is there a fundamental incompatability issue here, or am I just doing something wrong?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Specifically, if anyone has this mobo/vid card combination, I'd like to know how you set it up and what I need to tweak.  Thanks!
oh, I'm running BIOS v1.4  (MSI tech support told me to upgrade to latest BIOS and it'd be okay.  They lied.   :-P)

I managed to fix my problem:
    Format C:/
    Install Windows XP
    Install Service Pack 1
Install motherboard drivers using MSI LiveUpdate 3
    Install ATI Catalyst v.1.0.1796.585
Celebrate when your video card works properly.
Yell and cuss at Service Pack 2.
Now I usually don't subscribe to the "Microsoft sucks" school, but it does seem that in this case, they were the problem.
Anyways, it's all working now.  I just hope I don't run into the "freezing in games" problem that others have posted about.
Thanks to both of you for your help.  I do appreciate it.
