K8N Neo2 = better RAM support?

Judging by the fact that the K8N Neo (socket754) had severe issues with numerous memorymodules it is nothing else then logical that there should be better support for memories such as eg. twinMOS.
Has anyone heard anything about this? I've ordered twinMOS and a neo2 platinum but I might just change the order.

Ok im thinking SCREW socket 939, im going 754..
Instead of :
Msi k8n neo2 plat 939
3500+ 64
2x512 Twinmos i'll do:
MSi K8N NEO PLAT 754
3400+ 64
2X512 A-data PC4000 Vitesta
I should reach pretty high clock speeds with that

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum RAM problem

    My spec:
    AMD64 3000+ Venice
    1gb RAM Elixir
    1 x Maxtor 120gb IDE
    1 x Maxtor 200gb SATA
    1 x Maxtor 200gb IDE
    ATI Radeon x800 pro 256mb
I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard, the problem is that when I try to add in another 512mb stick the system won't even boot up. I have tried other brands and amounts but still to no avail.
I boot the system up and the monitor won't even switch on, but if I take out the 512 stick it works fine.
    Any ideas?

    Not quite.
    Use the color codes .
If you have matched sticks in density (size) and timings (spd data) you can run dual channel.
This means having one stick in memory channel 1 ( green ) and another in memory channel2 (purple )
Theese are physically wired next to eachother on the motherboard , from cpu and upwards..
You can not do that , with that mismatched modules the cpu can't initialize it's memory controller .
So your only choice is to run two modules with single memory channel config .
Use the colorcodes to make sure you use signgle memory channel config (since you have mismatched sticks and the A64 memory controller cant run those in dual mode)
So your choice is to use either both green slots or both of the purple ones .
Place the one module with the higest cas rating (slowest) in the green slot with the lowest slot number (marked on the board) .
And the other stick on the green slot that remains .

  • K8N Neo2: Massive RAM errors with bios 1.3

I just flashed to bios 1.3. Everything worked fine before, but i flashed in hope of better OC stability. Then suddently memtest86 reports thousands of errors. Could my RAM just die like that? The system isn't prime95 stable for one minute(!).
Do you guys think this is a bios or a RAM issue? Is it safe to flash back to 1.1 with ram errors?
I really need some help, tried everything i can think of :(

Well it certainly sound like some left over settings in your bios
    thats screwing it up .
Flash with dos boot diskette (1.1 or 1.2 or 1.3 your choice) but do it
    like this.
    1. Turn off PC , and remove AC.
    2. Reset cmos w/jumper .
    3. Boot to bios and load "optimized settings" , F10 exit save .
    4. Boot to dos with floppy diskette.
    5. At the command prompt enter
    AWFL888D biosfile.xxx /py/sn/wb/cc/cd/cp/f/r
    6. The system boots , if a cmos check sum error appears hit "del" to enter bios
load "Optimized settings" F10 ,save exit bios.
    7. Let it boot again to dos prompt from the floppy
    8. You will see "updating dmi data" and " building dmi pool success"
Now it can be booted again and own bios preferances can be set
    and windows booted after that.
This is how i do it , and is my recommendation to avoid leftover settings in bios
, dmi issues and will give the most possible fresh bios flash.

  • K8N Neo2-fx Ram problem Help please

I have three ram(2x512MB single sided , 1x1GB double sided). Is there any way I can put them all on the motherboard? When I place them all the computer is not starting and it`s making a "beep" every 2-3 seconds. If i connect the 1GB double sided on the Dimm1(green) and the one 512MB single sided on the Dimm3(green) it`s working properly. Is there any way I can use all my ram at the same time. I`m desperate. Help please...  thank you

How can I put my computer facts under any post I am posting? I should make it my signature?
That's the rule mate which you need to gives all your component in details including your PSU and Bios revision so that others can help you! Like what BOSSKILLER say it won't works with 3 DIMMS unless you purhased another 1 GB of RAM then it can solve your problem with 4 DIMMS or else with 2*512MB RAM. Make sure that you've lowered your HT to <=800Mhz as default is 1000Mhz. GD luck.

Memory who have low latency timings such is pc3200 2-2-2-5
    or
memory such is PC3500 or PC4000 who have relaxed timings?
By the way i'm going to try a two bank of A-DATA VITESTA PC4000...
In my short period of testing with my board all I would worry about is able to run 1t at your desired speeds. Low latency might help alittle at default speeds but once you get above 210 say pretty much equal in terms of performance.
If your not going to OC much say no higher than 220 1:1 go with some low latency like my Corsair but if your going for the max get something like PC3700 or above. Like I said having to run 2t over 1t really stinks.

  • Max processor for K8N Neo2?

Howdy, I have a K8N Neo2 and I'm looking to upgrade the processor in it.  Looking at the specs on the website it lists "Supports up to 3500+, 3800+ Athlon 64 FX 53, or higher CPU".  Has anyone put anything faster then an FX53 in a K8N Neo2 and it worked?  Just wondering how fast I can go with the processor in this board.
    Thanks,

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum AND SATA2

i have  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard with 3500+ cpu and WD 160 hard sata disk.
I 'd like to ask if my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard support sata2 hard disk drives, in order to know which HD  to connect as a second HD drive, SATA or SATA 2 ??

It'll see SATA2 as regular SATA. You won't loose any speed either. There are no hard drives that actually benefit from SATA2 spec speeds. Well, maybe in isolated near theoretical benchmark cases one current model might be faster in SATA2 mode.
We just haven't got the technology yet.

  • What RAM for o/cing 3500+ on K8N Neo2 Plat?

    Hi all,
Ive been reading all the problems with o/cing these little beasts, and i hope to god i dont run into any of them!
Im not using SATA or RAID so i guess thats a few problems out the way. My current RAM is really turd though, and its time to buy some new stuff. I want 1gb of something that is hopefully going to hit 250x10 with decent timings. Am i hoping for too much? Ive seen a few people with this setup though.
Ive read the recent Anandtech 3200 memory roundup, and had made up my mind on getting the crucial ballistix stuff. Its the only RAM in the test that hit DDR500 and beyond on the A64 platform. (Supposedly on the K8N neo2 aswell) But after more digging it seems that this is infact a load of crap.
    What do i buy???????
I dont want to shell out a load of cash on something that isnt going to perform. Im gutted that the crucial 3200 RAM isnt as good as i was lead to believe. It would have been great running DDR500 at those timings.
Anyway, ill also need to get a better HSF. The thermalright slk948 looks good but my local place just got the XP-90's in. Cant seem to find a decent review of them anywhere either. Any recommendations???
    Any help would be great,
    Cheers

I thought HT Frequency would affect memory throughput but apparently not. I'll try dropping it to 3x. Thanks.
Memtest is good at finding finding errors in a standalone environment by writing a particular pattern to every location in memory then reading it back to make sure it hasn't changed. So it very good for finding marginal chips and validating that everything is properly hooked together. It also has the advantage of running standalone so you eliminate any XP/driver issues from the equation.
Prime95 is an excellent CPU/memory exerciser because it checks the accuracy of an elaborate computational algorithm to make sure of the results. And since it is running under XP it also tests the entire configuration to some extent because drivers and hardware that are marginal will likely fail much faster under the constant load.
What I call Prime95 Lotto is particularly cool. It is the search for the first 10,000,000 digit prime number. If you find it you get a large share of a $100K prize which is currently about $50K. It also runs in the background and utilizes the CPU 100% without affecting your other apps so you can still use your system while it is running.
The Red Rocket Folding Team effort also makes a great background stress tester.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?boardid=30
I've also found a great graphics stresser:

Get both going and you really work your system!

  • K8N Neo2 problems running 300MHz HTT and higher than "100MHz" RAM divider

    Hi!
Got some problems with my K8N Neo2 when running the HTT much above 300MHz, only RAM divider that's stable is "100MHz" which means the RAM runs at the half speed of HTT. That's not good since my RAM does 270MHz with "200MHz"/1:1 divider.
This is not a problem when I run my FX-55, but when I was going to overclock my 3000+ Winchester where the highest MP is 9 this is a big problem. It does 3004MHz (9x334MHz) stable with Prime95 and runs Super Pi at 3135MHz (9x348MHz), but with only 174MHz (348MHz/2) on my RAM the performance is bad. CPU is cooled by Prometeia Mach II.
I'm running HT Frequency/LDT of 3x, any of the settings under 3x doesn't work right (looks like 2,5x equals 3x and 2x, 1,5x and 1x equals 4x). Any BIOSes where the HT Frequency settings below 3x works right?
Thanks for any inputs on this subject.

Why are you insistent on running your frequency at 300Mhz and higher?  Why not lower the frequency and increase the multiplier?  For example, you could run 275Mhz x 11 for a CPU frequency of 3025Mhz.  Then you could still run your RAM at the 1:1 ratio.....
Just a thought -- curious why you haven't tried that...

  • Looking for a better heatsink help....K8N NEO2

Im looking for a better heatsink....any suggestions? I may oc it but for now I wont....it idles at 40-41 and stays at 60 when im gaming 58 if i turn off cool n quiet.....and thats with some ocz ultra5 Thermal compund....ThX

Yes, agree with SAB, zalman 7000 is a good one, however I´ve got 2 very simular K8N Neo2-systems but with 2 different cpu coolers.
One with zalman 7000alcu and one with Thermalright XP-90 and a zalman 92mm fan ( you can use what ever 80/92mm fan you like high speed, low speed, led colored, etc).
Both are equal regarding cooling to my experience, but I prefered the XP-90 because I did not have to remove the backplate ( I think zalman recommends mounting it´s own backplate to get the right distance/pressure between the cooler and cpu ).
With the XP-90 you just switch the retension mechanism which is easy ( even with the MoBo in the case ).

  • 2gb ram that works w/k8n Neo2 + amd 64

Im looking at purchasing some good memory that doesnt give me the hassle that my current one does.
I have a k8n Neo2, and want to drop in 2gb of memmory.  Anyone out there with the same motherboard and amd 64 processer running 2gb or more of pc400 ram?  Thanks.

The Neo2 Platinum has issues with certain types of memory when all four slots are filled (typical with 2GB or greater).  Read my thread for details:

    First post, whoo hooo
So what version of BIOS are u running?  I recently installed the two newest versions 2.0 and 2.1, and they both give me problems.  With the latest (2.1) I'm getting the same error as you.  Returning back to previous BIOS fixed my problems.  Oh yeah, my RAM is Kingston Hyper-X, so i don't think thats your problem.
Let me know if you fix it, thats why im here, .

XL's is verified by anand to top at 2-3-3 on DDR466 so this would be how much of a oce on a 3700sandy at those timings.
Well the 3700 San Diego har a max multilplier equals 11 and you can use the lower ones also .
So you have more options than one to reach say you set a goal for 2700mhz assuming you have air cooling (2.7ghz seems to be what most aim for without extreme cooling)
HTT reference clock at 233 with memory index 200 times multiplier 11 gives 2530mhz on the cpu and 233mhz/466DDR on the memory .
To maintain same memory speed (around or below 233mhz) with higher cpu frequency you must use a divider by setting max memory speed to 166 etc and use a higher HTT clock reference .
    E.g
    HTT=270
    Multiplier=10
    Memory index=166
    Gives CPU/12 divider
    CPU is then 2.7ghz
    Memory speed = cpuspeed/12 = 2700/12 = 225mhz or DDR450 .
    Multilplier memory index dividers:
    7x with 133 : cpu/11
    8x with 133 : cpu/12
    9X with 133 : cpu/14
    10x with 133 : cpu/15
    11x with 133 : cpu/17
    7x with 166 : cpu/9
    8x with 166 : cpu/10
    9X with 166 : cpu/11
    10x with 166 : cpu/12
    11x with 166 : cpu/13
    7x with 183 : cpu/8
    8x with 183 : cpu/9
    9X with 183 : cpu/10
    10x with 183 : cpu/11
    11x with 183 : cpu/13
    7x with 200 : cpu/7
    8x with 200 : cpu/8
    9X with 200 : cpu/9
    10x with 200 : cpu/10
    11x with 200 : cpu/11
( with 200 you will se the divider is the same as multiplier , thats why some calls this 1:1 )
There are also some tables for the dividers made by orcar wu over at extremesystems in this thread:
    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=41595&highlight=a64+divider+table]
Using this calculation you can figure out your ram frequency before trying it in the bios .
E.g use 183 mem index/divider with cpu multiplier 10x with 2.7ghz as the target .
    10 x 270 = 2700
    memory will run at
    2700/11 = ~ 245mhz or DDR490

  • Is this RAM ok for a K8N NEO2 Platinum

I am currently building a system and have got my FX-53 and K8N NEO2 Platinum but i have hit a problem in that i dont know what memory to get for it i have been looking at this http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=116120&cks=PRL
or if this is no good could some one recommned me one perhaps from this list
    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/kl.asp?bn=10529

If you know very little about memory, then what it IS telling you, you won't understand. Here's a tip....on the offset, don't spend a lot of money on memory just yet. Purchase some PC3200, like Kingston KVR RAM or Kingmax...something relatively inexpensive...until you begin to understand timings and voltage adjustments. You will not have any problems with this type of memory, and usually...initial boot-up goes very smoothly.
Then, after you start to play with timings and such...when you begin to feel comfortable with making these adjustments, and you know your system is stable....then you could experiment with higher-performance RAM.
That's just how I do it..as I am conservative when first assembling a computer!

  • Upgraded RAM on MSI K8N Neo2 lost video output?

I have a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mainboard with 1gb ram, started to get blue screen problems and acertained it was a ram module causing this. I decided I would upgrade and have bought some Corsair XMS3200C2Pro ram 2 x 512mb. Installed and rebooted, no video just the flashing green on the monitor switch. I have checked the graphics card but it is still seated and all the cables are firm. Tried taking new ram out and putting old back in - no joy.
Weird thing is I am sure it reboots into windows (my msn get logged out on my laptop) and it sounds like its going through the process but no visuals at all not even bios flash screen.
Any ideas???? I have tried google but nothing there that helps.

This may work.  Try taking out the new Corsair Memory and inserting one stick in slot #1 (closest to cpu) of old memory that you know works.  Reset cmos real carefully (disconnecting power, moving jumper, etc. exactly as in the manual).  If it boots, hit del to enter bios, choose optimized defaults, then go into dimm voltage and raise to 2.75 (ignore any red flashing warning or use 2.7 if you are afraid). F10 and save. Shutdown before reboot.  Disconnect power, open case, insert your corsairs. reconnect power. hopefully this works.  [Is any extra power connector required for gpu properly attached?]  good luck.
