K8N Neo2 boot problems, freezes at testing base and extended memory

I recently bought a motherboard/cpu combo and been having problems.   I'll start with my system specs:
MSI K8N Neo 2
AMD 64 3000+ Rev E
XFX Geforce 6600GT
Corsair Valueselect 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 , 4 512MB sticks
400W Powersupply
I ordered a mother/cpu combo along with other parts to build a new computer.  Finally everything arrived a couple days ago and I started building.  First I installed the mb, cpu, ram and vid card to make sure everything was working.  When I started it up I got nothing.  So I started messing around and dropped the ram down to only one stick and used the D-Bracket.  I figured out the cpu had been dislodged during shipping, got it installed again and was able to boot up could get into the bios etc.  I put back in my other three sticks of ram everything seems to be working.  Next I hooked up the hd, cd/dvd etc.  Tried to boot up and it freezes after listing the total memory.  Looking at the D-Bracket it shows it freezes at Testing Base and Extended Memory.  So I unplug everything back down to just cpu, ram and vid card to see if it still works.  It freezes again at testing base and extended memory.
At this point I drop the ram back down to one stick.  It boots up and I can get into the bios again.  So I shut everything off and put back in the rest of the ram.  Turn it on and it freezes at the same point.  Hmm, drop it back down to one stick and I can make it through to the bios.  Now I'm just frustrated and want to see if I can get my other components working and maybe windows installed then I'll come back to figuring this out.  So I save and exit the bios, while it's rebooting again it freezes at the Testing base and extended memory.
After playing around with it some more over the past day here is what I've come to see.  If I move one stick of ram around I can get past the testing extended memory to get into the bios or up to the point of needing a boot disk etc.  If I reset or reboot it from this point it will freeze.  If I just leave my computer alone and off for around 30 minutes I can start it up once then it will freeze.  Now I'm just confused why it will intially start up as everything is ok but freeze if it resets.  Everytime it freezes it will be at the Testing Base and Extended Memory.
Some things I have tried while talking to a friend about the problem is clearing the cmos and also putting in the ram settings in the bios.  Neither seems to work.  I've done a lot of searching on google and in this forum and haven't seen anyone talk about a problem like this so hopefully I'm not missing anything.
If there's anything else you guys need to know about my setup let me know.  I also hope I wrote this all clearly because at this point I'm pretty frustrated.
Thanks!

Ok, newest update.
After clearing the cmos I put in a stick of ram.  Everything loaded up ok and I went into the bios and entered the values (2.5-3-3-8) and 2.75V.  To my amazement it didnt' lock up after saving and exiting and it made it through to the Disk Boot Failure etc.  So I hit the reset button to see if it would go all the way through again and it froze again with D-Bracket LEDs showing the Testing base and extended.  I turned off the case with the on off switch in the back and powered up again.  It went right through in the past I'd have to wait.  So it seemed like things were a little better.
So I put in a second stick of ram and it booted all the way through, tried to reset to see what would happen and it froze.  Turned power on and off and it froze not making it anywhere.  Tried that a few more times and it would always freeze right away making no progress.
Back down to one stick of ram and it works again where I can go into the bios, save and exit and it'll make it through a full boot up to Disk Boot Failure.  Weird thing was once after just hitting the reset button it actually made it all the way through.  So it seems to act differently almost everytime.
To me at least there doesn't seem to be a logical way I can think of what the problem could be.

  • 648 max , testing base and extended memory

I dont see the thread i answered to one time that someone spoke of using ddr400 with 648 max or max-L board and they were getting testing base and extended memory error from the LED's.  Well i just got the same error today and my system would not boot i cut the power to the PS. and turned it back on it would start to boot and hang i could barely get to the windows logo sometimes the vid card wouldnt even boot the logo to the screen. This is with an updated mobo that msi sent me that i had just put in , it seemed to run fine at first then this problem started occuring.  The only difference i had in the setup from the previous outdated board was i had the mem in DIMM 3 and not DIMM 1, so i moved the memory back over to DIMM 3 and now the problem is gone. Just something for those of you with the same problem to try.
Oh and i forgot one more issue, i cannot set the dram speed in the bios manually i have ddr 333 it should be 167 mhz so i set it to 4/5  and the system will not boot at all  i end up having to reset cmos.  I called MSI about that and they told me to just have it set to SPD , I said i know that and im fine with leaving it that way but it should let me set it manually if i wanted to and that i wondered if that had anything to do with the random " testing base and extended memory " problem.

    It was probably myt thread...
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/viewindex.php?threadid=6204&boardid=10&styleid=1
Have done some testing with both DDR333 and DDR400 and my results are in the thread.
Right no I'm using my DDR400 as DDR333, manually set to 167MHz, using DIMM1, and havn't seen any problems. I'll try the DIMM3 to see if I get any changes.
And by the way.. I tried setting my DDR400 manually to 200MHz and it wouldn't boot at all. After a lot of ugly language I finally got it back to the BIOS....after a reset of the CMOS.
Seams like you should use SPD if you want to use the correct freq for your RAM.
Have you tested the new 1.3 BIOS?

  • K8N Neo2 Boot Problem

Well ok, I got a new Aspire 500w PSU to replace the Thermaltake Butterfly 480w, and I try again.  Now the computer starts, but it won't show anything on the monitor still.  DLED is Orange, Red, Red, Orange. I don't see what is wrong!!!    This is my first computer, and now it has problems...
Aspire PSU: 34 amps in +12 v rail
    AMD 64 3500
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    Aspire 500w PSU
    1 gig Crucial Ballistix
    WD 74 GB raptor
    Maxtor 80 GB HDD
    Nec 8X DVD-RW Drive
    Mitsumi Floppy Drive
    XFX GeForce 6800
    Thermaltake Venus 12 HSF
Now my configuration for the drives were putting them on cable select.  So IDE1 has the Maxtor, IDE2 is for the optical drive, Floppy is the Mitsumi, and SATA 1 is for the WD 74 GB Raptor.  I looked at the moan thing, and I am doing everything it says to do...

Mmm... nice try... hmm... lemme bring those down (nicely)
1)The two drives ARE on their own IDE cables set as master
2)The CMOS jumper is in its correct spot.
3)Orange, Red, Red, Orange is NOT a DLED function
4)I re-seated my video card a lot already...
5)Connection to the 17 inch CRT display is fine...

  • P45 platinum gets stuck on Base and Extended Memory Test

    First my system specs:
    MB: P45 platinum
CPU: Intel Core Duo Quad Q6600
GPU: Nvidia Evga 8600 GTS 256MB
    RAM: 1x 1GB OCZ Nnvidia PC2 6400 dual channel 1x 2GB Corsair
    OS: Windows XP Pro sp3
Well my current problem is that when i turn on my computer it gets stuck on Testing Extended and Base Memory according to the LED lights, sometimes if i wait it will start up the system and sometimes it wont, this has been happening for about a week. Also another thing that happens is that it blue screens me sometimes when its starting up and restarts not sure if this is a OS or a motherboard issue. Previously when it was doing the extended base memory test it would reset right there several times even before starting, when it does start i have no issues though, would really appreciate if anyone can help me with this, thanks before hand.

If you got hang while trying to go into BIOS, it means that a hardware is failing depending on where it is stuck at. I suggest you hit esc key during bootup and see where the bootup hangs at.
I have the splash screen disabled so can see exactly where its happening. Initialises USB devices, two beeps, then stops at end of memory count 4gb. The only other time it doesnt load is when my monitor doesnt kick in and the LED's stay on initializing video interface.
After work today it took about 20 reboots to get it on. You can still input keyboard commands when it seems to halt, i shall describe:
if you press 'del to enter setup' you get loading setup... (doesnt enter BIOS screen)
    or
press 'f11 to load [something]'... (doesnt enter BIOS screen)
The only other information I can give is a three letter/digit code on the bottom right of screen.
I seem to have ruled out overclocking and BIOS versions as they still happen now I have controlled the factors (changed BIOS' and default non-overclock settings).
This used to be very infrequent however is every time I boot up now. Like you say some hardware is failing, whether its a cable, psu or other component I just do not know...
    * also it seems to be happening to other users who have completely different hardware to me

  • Serious K8N Neo2 Platinum Problem

    Hello
This is my long and sad story with this MSI board...
As I mentioned above, I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum with a Athlon64 3500+ (130nm) and some Corsair TwinX 3200XL 2x512 MB. The recommended setting for this Ram is 2-2-2-5-T1, but with this setting, my system crashes in prime 95 after maybe 5 mins and under compiling a Gentoo-System. But on the other hand, Memtest 86 reports no error at all with this timing. Later I changed the Timing to 2-2-2-5-T2 and suddenly, everyting becames stable. I could compile two Gentoo systems (32 & 64 Bit) and ran prime 95 for more than 24 hours. I have nothing overclocked. I think the Board is the Problem here, because there are some other malfunctions. Sometimes it doesen't detect my IDE Devices at startup (DVD-Rom and CD-rw) or my ethernet card gets no connection, but everything is configured well. So I really dont know what to do. I feed my Memory with 2.75 Volt. I also flashed the mainboard to Bios-Version 1.3 but nothing changed...
I hope anyone of you can give me a hint or something...
    Thanks a lot

corsair ultra-low latency requires 2.75V according to their documentation. Also I have heard that prime95 has an issue with systems with 1024mb or ram in a certain test. Not sure I can't confirm but I do remember reading that somewhere yesterday.

  • S939 K8N Neo2-54G Problem!!!!!

    S939 K8N Neo2-54G with a AMD64 3500, 1gb 3200 Ballistix memory, and a Rad x800Pro Modded to XT.
Graphics worked fine in a SB75G2 although with this combo the board just craps out on 3d within 30 seconds, sometimes blue screen sometimes VPU reovery and sometimes just a nice ol reset.
Just wondered if anyone else is having problems like mine, or if there is a solution?
Tried hypertransport to 4 and slackening off mem timings to no avail?
    Any help would be appreciated
    Cheers
    GiB

I had a problem with bluescreens on my Neo2 with 3500+ and mushkin 3500 level 2 memory. What i found worked was setting the timings to 2-3-2-10 from 2-2-2-10. Im not familiar with your memory but maybe try that? Also, check your PSU as the power demands might be higher on your new board and thats whats causing you problems.

[Athlon64] Msi K8N Neo2 Platinum problems with Patriot Ram

    First post, whoo hooo
So what version of BIOS are u running?  I recently installed the two newest versions 2.0 and 2.1, and they both give me problems.  With the latest (2.1) I'm getting the same error as you.  Returning back to previous BIOS fixed my problems.  Oh yeah, my RAM is Kingston Hyper-X, so i don't think thats your problem.
Let me know if you fix it, thats why im here, .

  • HT4259 I have an 802.11n base and extender and still cannot get a good signal 80-90 ft away . Why?

I have an 802.11n base and extender and still cannot get a good signal 80-90 ft away . Why?

Hardwire is always recommended because there is virtually no signal loss in a wire....at least up to 300 feet or so.
Another advantage of using Ethernet cable...if you can...is that you can locate the AirPort Express where it is most needed.
If it extends using wireless only, it pretty much needs to be located about half the distance from the main router and the general area that needs more coverage.
I like to use WiFi Explorer since it displays SNR (Signal to Noise) readings, which are the best way to evaluate signal quality.
Mac App Store - WiFi Explorer
If the signal is varying constantly, something is causing it to do so....assuming that the AirPorts are functioning correctly.
Cordless phones are a huge problem for wireless networks.  You want to try to figure out if the phones are causing a problem as a first troubleshooting step.
That is why I suggested that you turn off the phones for an hour or two and watch the network to see how it behaves.  If the signal stops fluctuating....that is a good clue that the phones are interfering with the wireless signal.

  • K8N Neo2 plat problems. sound/boot/network

I just love the mobo. One of the best I ever had. But recently Ive run into som trouble with it.
When i boot it sometime hangs and the d-bracket tells me it is because of the floppy drive controller. Kinda weird since ive turned it off in the bios and I dont got a floppy connected. Ive read a little on this site and got to the conclusion that it is probably my PSU. A real cheap one that came with my case to around 30 €. Its only a 300w and it is due to a change. But i find it peculiar that i has run fine for several months.
When i got the mobo and i booted it came with an boot option that had something to do with the network. If you pressed shift+f11 or something like that you would enter a menu where it was possible to configure several network boot options and the possibility to turn it off. I did and now i cant get it back? Not that i miss it but i might use it later on and i am sure it can be reenabled. But resetting cmos by jumper or removing the batteri doesnt do it. How do i do it?
And then after messing around with a frontpanel audio thing in my case the onboard sound stopped working. Ive reset it to standard by putting the jumpers where they belong and not using the frontpanel. But still no sound.
Guess that was all my trouble hope that youll be able to help me
    Thanks in advance

Know pepole with same case/PSU as me (with "only" 17A on the 12V) and morew power demanding HW (9800xt) ... no probs anywere....
I belive that poeple shuld be aware of that not all problems are caused by having a PSU with less than 24A@12V rail....
I am getting a little tired of all the "Buy a new PSU" - answers... Willing to get in a debate on this.

What are your PSU amp for the +12V? What bios version are you using right now? Tried to disable the fast write in the Bios? Gd luck.

  • K8N Neo2 temperature problem

    Hi,
I am having problems getting consistent readings from the temperature sensors on my new K8N Neo2 boards. I have Cool'n'Quite enabled in the BIOS. I am not overclocking the system. BIOS is version 1.2.
The temperatures shown in the BIOS is Case = 37C and CPU = 42C. However, if I stay at the Healty section of the BIOS for a few minutes, the CPU temp. slowly crawls up to 48C.
I use the nVidia System Utility to read the temps. in Windows XP, as this tools seems to be fairly consistent in reporting the temps. (opposed to CoreCenter and MBM5).
At the initial startup (from cold) the NVSU gives me about 10C higher CPU temp. than at following warm boots. At warm boot the CPU temp. is 33-37C idle, and 62C heavy load (Prime95 toture test).
It seems to me that the 1.2 BIOS is completly screwed up with regard to the sensor readings. I have thought about reseating the heatsink (Thermaltake Silent Boot with Papst sielent fan + AS5), but I am not sure that it is worth the effort.
Can anyone else confirm the above?
    Best regards
    JASE

Yeah. That's a fair recap of the situation at least as it seems to affect me. I went from being really obsessed about the temp to not really caring anymore after I spent $60 on a huge aftermarket heatsink and fan which did nothing but reduce the fan noise.

  • K8n neo2 platinum problems

ok guys I've been looking all over the internet and cannot find any answers to my problem.
I have an MSI K8N neo2 platinum running easybios
    AMD Opteron 146
    2gb Ballistixs pc4000
    30gb maxtor
    120gb maxtor
    2x dvd rw drives
    nvidia 6800 agp
    sound blaster live 24bit
I run windows x64 and after flashing my bios form 1.6 (I think) to 1b I kept getting errors e.g. "ROM cannot invoke" (or something), and primarily "disk read error", now the disks show up in the bios, they show up in a windows install but it just won't boot from them. I have flashed to easybios and the rom error went away but the disk read one was still there. I am now reinstaling windows x64 but would like to know how to fix such a problem if it were to happen again. Both my drives are IDE and are on the IDE0 cable with master and slave correctly set.
Also the temperature readings for my processor are 42 degrees celcius when everything is at stock and I have a zalman 9500 heatsink fan on it running at full speed. This is obviously wrong - is there any way to fix this?
    Thanks
    Daven

I has the exact issue with my board, except it was with the SATA drives. I flashed with e few BIOS', and the newest one that worked correctly was 1.8
If it was me, I would reflash to BIOS 1.8
    Post back with your results.
Also, even though you are installing Windows again, it will most likely corrupt your installation, as it did mine, twice, before I figured out the problem.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Temp problems...

I just got this board and plugged my FX-53 into it.  In an air conditioned room @ 60'F, a cold bootup and in the bios it says my Mobo temp is 30'C, CPU 40'C.  Within 30 seconds, the CPU temp shoots up to 55'C.  It then will then sporadically jump between 50'C and 62'C.
I managed to install XP and all my drivers and I downloaded the MSI monitoring program and it listed my CPU @ 74'C and my motherboard @ 9'C...
I'm a bit weary because I don't want to fry my $900 cpu.  Is anyone else having problems???
This is with an XP-120 heatsink installed w/AS5 (thin layer, not half the tube   )

I noticed that everyone here is complaining about the High Temperatures from the K8N Neo2 Platinum Series for the Socket 939.  I too am having difficulties with the temps.
In core center it shows a Temp. at 140°F which to me seems outrageously high.  Tech support from MSI told me to physically touch the heatsink and if it felt hot or warm I may have a problem.  It did not feel warm at all.  However, MSI claims to not be having issues with the Temp readout on the motherboard specified.  (See below).
    Dear unsaid,
The issue did not seen on this model. Please do physically touching the HSF on the processor to see if it’s warm on touch then you can know weather the readout is true or not, thanks.

I had the ASUS A8V Deluxe w/ wifi and switched do to some slow boot times and the fact that NVIDIA's chipset is usually better than VIA.
    Question is this :
What good quality heatsink and fan should I get for the socket 939 chipset.  I see people posting about the Zalman 7000 and Venus 12.  But, is there a really good one without necessarily having to take the board out of the case and removing the backplate?
I also see people claiming to have a bios of 1.2 or 1.3.  Where do you get these?  I can only find 1.1 and that is what I am running and there is no change in temps.
If anyone has a great recommendation on the heatsink and fan please email me at [email protected]
    Thanks,

  • K8N Neo2, wierd problems

Hey all, I am new here
I looked through all the post but did not find anything related to my problem.
I have had  my rig almost a month without any problems but all of a sudden the computer just rebooted itself right in the middle of a simple (not 3d) game. It just kept rebooting after it reached the Windows logo and I would get error message like "IRQ was not less or equal" and the great Windows has stop your computer because of hardware failer, system will shut down. I tried to do a restore but XP could not find the HD, when I tried to run XP from CD it would not load due to hardware failer and I could not get into safe mode. Sometimes in the BIOs the BIOs would be corrubted, get those greek letters and things, just sometimes.
I stripped the thing down to just barebones, CPU, ram, vid and cleared cmos.
I first determined that the onboard IDE controller was bad, when I moved my HD to the PCI IDE controller the errors changed but XP kept restarting, but it now gave me a NT loader error which took me to the ram.
I pulled the ram and tried 1 stick at a time, turned out that 1 of the 512MB modules went bad, with that the computer started up and seemed to run fine. I connected everything back up and things still ran fine, just could not use the onboard IDE controller as Windows would not pick anything up on it. The next day I work on it some more, put the HD back onto the onboard IDE controller and it worked again.
But then my PS2 mouse port went dead, switched back to my USB and all seems well so far.
I used a VOM and checked the 3.3, 5 and 12 volt rails, all were within specs, no drops even under a stress test, CPU temps are fine.
Anyone else have seen anything like this
I have already received a RMA from Newegg on the MB but before I send it back I want to see if there is a solution to my problem.
My gut feeling tells me P/S but it test good. Been running 2 days now without any problems but I am worried that it may happen again.
My other thought is that maybe a zener diode, cap or voltage regulator on the MB may be going bad.
Any one have an idea about this, should I just send it back and get another MB or is this a growing MSI problem
    Thanks for any input.
    I have the following:
Windows XP home with SP2, fresh install and all updates
K8N Neo2 nForce3 Ultra, stock settings right now, BIO updated to 1.B0
    64 3500+ Venice, stock settings
1 Gig PATRIOT memory, 2*512MB running dual channel settings all auto/ stock
    420W Vantec P/S, 420a
    ATI 9550
    80 Gig WD
    20 Gig WD
    Sony CD-RW
    52x CD-Rom
PCI SiI 0680 Ultra 133 Medley ATA raid controller: Running slave HD and CD-rom on it, no raid setup

    JayBee;
I used the VOM whilel running the stress test with everything hooked up, even played intense 3d games with the VOM connected back-probing the pins 1,2 and 11 (orange wires) of the MB power connector for the 3.3 volt rail and then back-probing the molex cable for my 5 and 12 volt rails.
I cleared the cmos by by pulling the P/S cable then turning on the P/S to discharge caps, after this i used the "clear cmos" jumper and then went back in and set everything bak up.
As I have said, even with just a basic setup, CPU, 1 stick of ram and vid I still got the problems, it wasn't until I moved my C:\ HD to the PCI IDE controller and the one bad stick of ram that I could get XP to start up.
I moved the C;\ drive back to the onboard IDE and again XP would not load, the next day I tried it again and all of a sudden the onboard IDE were working again. The very next day while playing my PS2 mouse went dead, plugged my USB mouse in and have been playing ever since. Very wierd stuff, like a bad diode gate or somthing, don't really know.

It started acting funny several hours after the update of the Bios, this AM it spontaneously rebooted and when it came up there was an error message about a damaged or corrupt Windows system file and suggested inserting the Windows Disk, which was done and then the system booted into windows. But the found new hardware came up and wanted driver for the PCI bridge, which I wasn't sure where it was so I let it complete without finding it and this is the error when I go to control panel/system/hardware/device mgr
Where do I get this driver? Is it on the driver disk that came with the motherboard? I don't remember having to install a driver for the PCI bridge.
    thanks

OK I thought I'd post the resolution to my problem.
After my initial posts the machine not only became unstable but it wouldn't boot into windows saying there was a corrupt Windows System File.
    1.  It occured to me that when I downloaded the new bios and applied it that I had failed to customize the DRAM settings in the bios. This was important because when I was building the machine I couldn't get Windows XP to install it always pooped out someplace early in the install.  At the time I was using default DRAM settings.  But I came here and read through the forum and found a sticky at the top of the forum that had settings for a number of different memory sticks including mine. So I went back and updated my bios with those setting. Voila everything was cool and I was able to load windows and move forward.   But I forgot that, and I attribute the instability of the system to that, wheter or not it was why the system eventually corrupted system board dirvers I don't know.  But I did change that, as the system would boot but just not boot windows.
    2. Next, I decided to attempt to repair my windows install.  However first since I had already applied SP2, and my Install disk was just the plain retail without any Service Packs.  I decided to make a new bootable install disk with SP2 slipstreamed into it so when I repaired I wouldn't have to reapply SP2.    Here's the method that I used.

    3.  Utilized the windows repair feature of windows setup.
    4. That worked my computer now booted into windows and I didn't lose data or configurations....whew!!
    5.  I still how ever was stuck with the original problem that started this thread..rats!! I thought SP2 would fix that.
    6.  I tried several times to get XP to update the driver, but I couldn't.  I even tried to select the driver from the list that is one of the optioins when you are updating drivers.  I found some but I wasn't sure which one that had PCI bridge in it was the right one. But the fact that when I was looking at the list of mfg only Compaq and NVidia were available. So a light bulb went off and opened up MSI Live  and looked at what was available in drivers, and sure enought there was a NVida driver.  So I figured I have nothing to lose.
    7. Next I downloaded the latest NVida nForce3 system driverfrom MSI and applied.
    8.  Bingo that worked, no more yellow ?'s in my hardware list.
Machine working fine now.  Still don't know if failing to insert the proper DRAM stuff caused this but it all started with the new bios so I am assuming it had some part.
