K8n NEO2 chipset cooling

I like optimize the heat dissipation of every chips on my pc..
Today i decides to replace the standard heatsink on my k8n neo2 platinum width another one  for cpu slotA  modified by me.
I was surprised because pratically there were no thermal grease between chipset and heatsink..
it is normal ?

Okay maybe use this one http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/view.asp?idx=71&code=014
I use it myself and it works good, however - there will be a close contact between the cooler and the Graphiccards components, because of the height of the Zalman cooler - You also have to remove the MoBo to be able to install it.
I´ve got a 6600GT card and it works fine ( 2mm distance), but depending on Graphiccard layout´s this may differ and some may not work at all ( you can bend the cooler fins a bit to get some more space ).
Best would be to find a good passive cooler with lower height, that do not interfer with Graphiccard or PCI slots, but I have not found any yet to recommend.
There are some very low passive chipsetcoolers, but I doubt their cooling capacity without a fan.

  • Removing K8n neo2 Chipset cooler

In my over excitement to build by new 939 rig, I forgot to remove the chipset cooler and put some AS5 under it (something I always used to do on new builds).
I've since seen on line the pictures of the minute amount that MSI put on them in the factory, so I'm now determined I'm gonna AS5 it.  The problem I have is that I've already installed the mobo and am reluctant to remove it again.  So my question is, has anybody actually removed the cooler while it was still in the case and how easy was it?
I've had a quick look at the lugs and tried pulling them (not too hard) but it looks like they have some kind of sleeve mechanism on them and I was wondering if there was a trick to pulling them out from the top?
    All help appreciated , thanks.

The pins (on my K8N Neo2) holding the NB fan to the motherboard are plastic.  Below the mobo, the plastic nub expands.  It's a cinch to squeeze the nub with pliers if you have the mobo out.  If you were just to pull from above, it may work, but I'd be prepared for breaking the pin.  Above the mobo, the pin has an integrated spring that pushes the fan against the chip.  I'm not sure the reason for the spring - I doubt the chip expands so I guess it is a bit of an isolation of the vibration of the fan.  Or perhaps more simply that the integrated spring+pin is one part, whereas a nut and screw would be two, perhaps more expensive.  In any case, if your replacement cooling solution can be attached from above and you don't mind risking breaking the pins, then try pulling from the top -- or just cut them immediately with some end-cut wire nippers.

  • K8N Neo2 Chipset cooling and 1.8 BIOS/temps issue

Hi,  Not really a problem thread, more some resolutions I want to share (didn't have much luck finding these answers so thought this might help someone...)
First - I've replaced my chipset cooler with the Vantec CCB-A1C (Copper).  I think mine is a fairly late revision board (though I forgot to record/photograph the chip while it was bare  ) but the stock HS had the usual rubbish tiny spot of gunk slightly off centre.  Gave it a nice (thin but even) layer of AS5 before fitting the Vantec and quite happy with the results:  The Vantec is actually considerably louder than the stock fan but by using Speedfan to throttle it back to 50% it becomes almost silent and the chipset temp hardly rises above 26C now (32C idle rising to 40+ under load previously).
And on the temps issue - I flashed the official 1.8 BIOS a little while ago and was disturbed to see my CPU temp go from high 30s to around 19C!  There was no way that could have been correct (at least 10 degrees lower than ambient?  I'm running an XP-90 but it's not magic!).
So I've been looking for news on these 1.9 bioses and popped in here http://www.lejabeach.com/MSIK8N/k8nneo2.html and found the 1.8F bios.  Have flashed and now my CPU is reporting 26C which is at least a bit more like it!  My system temp is stable at ~38C, but I have no idea of the location of that sensor so there could be other factors keeping that one high.
One question - does anyone have a definitive list of settings/temp offsets etc for Speedfan?  And maybe some diagrams showing sensor locations?  /hopeful
Apologies if any of this is old news of course!

oh yeah.. btw.. the case temp thermometer is top left... i discovered this with a 120mm fan pushing air over places on the motherboard

  • K8N NEO2 Chipset waterblock

I want to get a watercooling kit to lower the temps and also to lower the noise but while looking through my side panel i noticed that my 6800 Ultras cooler and part of the card actually sit almost directly above the chipset its self. Now i thought that removing the VGA cooler and getting a VGA waterblock would solve it and realised by just looking at it that the card itself would still sit directly ontop of the chipset slightly, wat can i do to get a water block on there?, what have others done?

I managed to install the Zalman Reserator large VGA block on my eVGA 6800GT and the small VGA block onto the NB chip on the K8N Neo2.  The tightest thing about the setup is getting the tubing to go from the large to the small block: you must leave a long loop of tubing so that the tube does not kink.  Removing the card without water cooling is cramped enough on this mobo, because the tab-lock ends up being hidden a bit by the NB chip fan.  It's even tighter with the watercooling, but you can't really remove the card without a lot of trouble in this case anyway!

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum cooler

is this cpu cooler zalman CNPS7000B-Cu  compatible with the k8n neo2 platinum nf3 motherboard? i cant find it anywhere in zalmans compatability list, if it does fit the board, what does fitting it entail? can i install it like a normal hs/f or are there special fitting instructions, if so where can i find these instructions? already tried google

The Zalman cooler is heavy, but its fine as long as the nipples are tightly fastened and the screws that going into the nipples, that hold the cooler in place are tightly fastened..
Also use some artic silver 5 thermal compound and ensure you read the
    http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm
for instructions on fitting a AMD64 processor, arctic silver recommend a different technique for these types of processor , Im sure theres not much different in the end result, but I like to do things by the manufacturers book as they generall know best.
    Good luck

  • Cpu and chipset cooling,recommendations?

Trying to figure out what the best HS is for a 3400 on the K8N and chipset cooler. Stock HS running about 35-41 sys temp and 40-51 cpu (Idle/load). sitting at 41 sys and 45cpu right now, weird.... Its all in a coolermaster "stacker?" case. Good airflow (1x120, 2x80 front and 1x80 side intake, 1x120, 3x80 out...) Going to add the "crossblower" fan as soon as I can find it in stock. Had thoughht about the coolermaster hyper 6 but its huge, would have to tie it off to the psu plate or something to keep it from shifting I think
I was looking at the ZALMAN CNPS7000A-AlCu
    http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=35-118-108&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE
I like the idea of quiet but summer is coming up and temps rise.... I also was thinking of running a duct from an 80 on the back or side to the HS fan as in intake and I dont think you can do it with the zalman. Any ideas? Not looking for a 92mm tornado setup, have to please the wife...
the chipset cooler gets me, have never bought one. Would like to be able to get one with a fan and plug into the board. Any thoughts on which one will work best?

Check some of the signatures here on the nVidia Athlon64 section of the Forum. That will give you a good idea of the Heatsink/fan combinations that are used!
I think the stock HSF is O.K., and I personally use the Zalman 7000AlCu....but there are other good ones!
P.S. while playing around yesterday....I opened the case up and put an additional fan on the exposed areas and it definitely dropped my temps about 8 deg. I'm thinking of adding a side case fan to help ventilation. I've got the Lian-Li PC-65 black aluminum case.

  • Passive chipset cooling on K8N Neo2 Platinum?

    Hi,
I would like to hear from anyone with experience from replacing the active MSI HS on a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with a passive one, Zalman NB47J for example?
    - Does the Zalman NB47J fit or is there another HS better suited?
    - Are there problems with the VGA card since the AGP slot is so close?
    - Heat problems. Would you recommend passive chipset cooling on K8N Neo2 Platinum?
I am not an overclocker but would like my system to be quiet.
    Cheers

    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    AMD64 Winchester 3000+
    Thermalright XP-90
    Powercolor 9800 PRO

    Baskerville,
No problem mounting the Zalman NB47J
and no heatproblems for me so far ( with some good chassi airflow / ventilation )
The problem is the limited space between the cooler and the Graphic card.
I had to bend a couple of the zalman fins, to be able to mount my 6600GT card.
If not- the Grahpic card components hits the Zalman cooler.
It may work with some other passive cooler that´s lower then the zalman model.

  • Chipset voltage adjustment (K8n neo2 plat)

I posted this in overclocking, with no luck.  Sorry to be repetitive . . .
Where in the BIOS do I adjust the chipset voltage?

My ram happily does 290 at 2.5-4-3-10.  I haven't yet tested how it handles higher timings.  But, it seems to perform quite nicely.
What I want to do is 333X7.5 with 5:6 mem divider, just to see how the increased FSB goes.  Anyone know if there are hard voltmods (you know with sawter, where you just set your warranty card on fire) for the chipset voltage?

Now... don't LOL, but there is a reason I picked the 3200+ instead of the 3000+, but I can't remember why???
Probably because the 3000+ only has a 9x maximum multiplier, whereas the 3200+ will go to 10x.
2600MHz at 9x means a FSB of 289MHz and ram at 289MHz for best performance.  Will your ram do 289MHz?  Of course you *can* run your memory and fsb async, but I prefer not to.

  • Cool and Quiet problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum v1.3 bios

    Hello
I have a problem with the Cool and Quiet feature on the K8N Neo2 Platinum (v1.3 bios).
As soon and I boot the Core Center v1.7.0.0 will instantly overclock my A64 3500+ CPU to 3000+ Mhz.  Of course this reboots my PC.
I have Cool and Quiet enabled in the bios, Automatic overclocking disabled in the bios and the Core Center softwares overclocking is (well it was) disabled?  How can I install it or get it to stop overclocking the system.
I want to run the Core Center to enable the Cool and Quiet fan controlling stuff.
    Thanks

Strange that Corecenter would overclock your cpu to 3ghz. It's known to be unreliable software, but not that unreliable.
Are you running a stock 3500+, or are you overclocking the HTT/FSB beyond 200?
Previous posted was right about cool and quiet software. You don't need corecenter to run it. Just stay away from corecenter and even uninstall it
Cool and quiet software (a device driver that you download from AMD, or that comes pre-installed with XP SP2) simply works as follows. It introduces the notion of several p-states (processor states) that it switches between based on its reading of cpu load. A p-state is a pairing of cpu voltage and cpu multiplier.  On my 3200+ newcastle, the p-states are:
    1.5V, 11x
    1.4V, 10x
    1.3V, 9x
    1.1V, 5x
Your 3500+ might be similar. Anyway, just run cpu-z instead of corecenter to watch your cpu speed changing on the fly.
As far as fan speeds go: the cool and quiet driver doesn't affect fan speeds.  That means to get the "quiet" part of "cool and quiet" you need either
    (a) a fan that has a temperature sensor and which automatically changes its speed based on that, or
    (b) just use the motherboard BIOS setting to do the same via bios software.
    (c) use speedfan to do the same via windows software.
I myself prefer (b) but it depends on the bios accurately reporting temperature, which can vary wildly between bios releases (e.g. newcastles didn't start getting accurate temp reports until bios 1.4).

  • MSI K8n Neo2 platinum and drivers chipset, 5.03 or 5.10?

    Hello,
    J reinstalled my K8n neo2 with XP SP2, A64X2 4200+, XFX 7600GT ....
On MSI website there is 5.03 drivers for this motherboard. There is no 5.03 on nVidia website drivers archive?
On nVidia website there are 5.10 and 5.11 drivers. j look here that 5.11 is not very stable.
So, what is the best: 5.03 or 5.10?
Excuse j write not very good english!
    Thank.

The 5.10 works fine - 5.11 has cause network problems for most people.  There are better (V4.79) IDE/SATA/RAID drivers available if you want to do your own mix: DL the 6.37 Beta from here http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=971 and replace the IDE subfolder in the C:\NVIDIA folder from unpacking the 5.10 nVidia driver pack with the IDE folder from the 6.37 Beta, then run the Setup.Exe in the 5.10 subfolder.  6.37 Beta was nVidia's early attempt at a unified nForce3/4 driver pack but they gave up the unified idea without ever publishing one.  There may even be better "mixes" available but this works for me and I've been running a RAID-1 with them for 2 years now with no faults.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum nVidia Socket 939 Motherboard (Chipset cooler)

    Hello pals...
It's been a while since I was here for the last time. The other time it was something related to the VGA cooler which had melted and was adviced to replace for a Zalman one. I did and it's now working perfectly.
But this time it's about the chipset cooler. It's making a high-pitched awfulloud noise (Like that one of a motorbike getting started but never actually starting, if you know what I mean)... Anyway, I am interested in replacing it for a new one but really can't see which one, as all I am getting around here (in Argentina) are coolers for VGA card chipsets and not for motherboards. Can somebody tell me what cooler to buy and where? and if possible, also mention the model and everything in case I have to order it abroad.
I'd appreciate ANY word of advice very deeply...

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Fan

For some reason the small chipset fan on my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo has become a lot louder, I think it is running at higher RPMs that before. It starts up loud even if the computer is doing a cold boot from room temperature. Is there anyway to control this fan speed and quiet it down? and if I slow it down, will it hurt my motherboard? This fan is now louder than my graphics card fan, which makes it the loudest fan in my case even though it is the smallest.

Thanks for you reply, the only problem with the Zalman is that it's really big and I think my MSI NX6800GT's cooler would get in the way.

  • K8n Neo2 + gainward powerpack 2600

    Hi all,
I will receive my k8n Neo2 next week, I already own a gainward powerpack 2600(6800 ultra) due the the fan on the motherboard chipset and the big cooling of the Graphic card. I ask myself if all will be ok for installation ?
    As someone already use K8n neo2 + gainward powerpack 2600 ?

  • 8x agp no can't do on K8n neo2

    Well,
I threw in the towel and settled...After all my previous testing and thinking I had something solved with my video freezing it would only return. I have however FINALLY figured out what causes it and I have no idea what to do. My k8n neo2 platinum will not run 8x agp. The x800 pro is either A) flawed or B) the board/chipset/agp slot is borked. I don't have another card to test with unfortunately. I know, I know there is practically no difference in performance which is quite right. Benchies show really no difference between 4x and 8x but I would like the stuff I paid good money for to work at the specs its rated and advertised to run at. I have done everything from reverting back to old drivers, loading defaults in bios, different chipset drivers, more voltage to vid card, aperture..etc. etc... I WANT 8X agp darnit Anyhow...did anyone else have  this issue and fixes for it? Is it possible the card might be borked (oh yes I have the 4 pipes unlocked on the x800 pro but stock speeds). Could this cause the problem for only 8x? Im at my wits end and about to ditch the board...
On a positive note I did manage to get my winchester 3200 to 2.4 gig on air with only 1.4 volts...Had it up to 2.6 stable on air but temps were to high with stock cooling..

My last system only had a 4x agp motherboard and was perfectly stable for a year with this vid card...after updating to the k8n neo2 platinum with 64 3200, I get freezing only in games at 8x agp. If I reduce it to 4x then its fine. And I don't have another card to test, but I am leaning it toward being the vid card cause I hear a lot about freezing and lockups with x800 series cards. I did understand the chance of 1 of the pipes being bad when I flashed it and only did it because I could revert back if it was unstable. Well in my other system it was stable for over a year and its stable at 4x in this msi board but not at 8x...I did all bios checks, agp nvidia/ati speedup disabled, and I this was all at not oc too.
