K8N NEO2 cool and quiet problem

I noticed that when I enable cool and quiet, my CPU clock gets stuck at 1 GHz (5x multi), it will not go full speed even at max load. Does anyone have any ideas?

Default xp installation use processr.sys Microsoft signed as cpu driver .
With AMD installed cpu driver it updates to amdk8.sys Advanced Micro Devices signed .
As for why the driver states version 1.1.0.0 i wonder myself .
Think that the changes are in the inf/cat/installshield file ,thats what i think when looking at the revision history.
Edit:
It is the file cpudriver.EXE which is 1.1.0.14 revision
(http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/cpudriver.EXE)
The amdk8.sys file is still at version 1.1.0.0 .

  • Cool and Quiet problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum v1.3 bios

    Hello
I have a problem with the Cool and Quiet feature on the K8N Neo2 Platinum (v1.3 bios).
As soon and I boot the Core Center v1.7.0.0 will instantly overclock my A64 3500+ CPU to 3000+ Mhz.  Of course this reboots my PC.
I have Cool and Quiet enabled in the bios, Automatic overclocking disabled in the bios and the Core Center softwares overclocking is (well it was) disabled?  How can I install it or get it to stop overclocking the system.
I want to run the Core Center to enable the Cool and Quiet fan controlling stuff.
    Thanks

Strange that Corecenter would overclock your cpu to 3ghz. It's known to be unreliable software, but not that unreliable.
Are you running a stock 3500+, or are you overclocking the HTT/FSB beyond 200?
Previous posted was right about cool and quiet software. You don't need corecenter to run it. Just stay away from corecenter and even uninstall it
Cool and quiet software (a device driver that you download from AMD, or that comes pre-installed with XP SP2) simply works as follows. It introduces the notion of several p-states (processor states) that it switches between based on its reading of cpu load. A p-state is a pairing of cpu voltage and cpu multiplier.  On my 3200+ newcastle, the p-states are:
    1.5V, 11x
    1.4V, 10x
    1.3V, 9x
    1.1V, 5x
Your 3500+ might be similar. Anyway, just run cpu-z instead of corecenter to watch your cpu speed changing on the fly.
As far as fan speeds go: the cool and quiet driver doesn't affect fan speeds.  That means to get the "quiet" part of "cool and quiet" you need either
    (a) a fan that has a temperature sensor and which automatically changes its speed based on that, or
    (b) just use the motherboard BIOS setting to do the same via bios software.
    (c) use speedfan to do the same via windows software.
I myself prefer (b) but it depends on the bios accurately reporting temperature, which can vary wildly between bios releases (e.g. newcastles didn't start getting accurate temp reports until bios 1.4).

  • Cool and Quiet on K8T Neo2-F V2.0

    I have been playing a bit with a K8T Neo2-F V2.0 (s939) and a Winchester 3200+.
There seem to be a problem with the CPU fan control while using Cool and Quiet.
BIOS is v3.6, os WINXP SP3, latest AMD proc driver installed.
CnQ enabled in BIOS, Minimal power management in power options.
The C'nQ itself works fine, but the fan blowing full blast 3300rpm all times.
Is this a known problem? CnQ work fine in kubuntu 64-bit as well but no fan slowdown.
Corecenter does not support this board.
Tried speedfan, but on a brief test could not get it control the fan, unless I did something wrong.

This board has no option for Smartfan in BIOS.
From the manual, whatever it means for this board(seem like its just copied from a more feature rich board manual):
"If the mainboard has a System Hardware
Monitor chipset on-board, you must use a specially designed fan with speed sensor to take
advantage of the CPU fan control."
Currently using the stock HS& fan. Need to find a working solution for fan control.

  • Lockups caused by Cool and Quiet?

Since a few months, I have a MSI K8T Neo2 FIR motherboard with an Athlon64 3200+ (Venice) CPU, equipped with 2x512 Mb dual channel memory. No overclocking or any non-standard BIOS-settings; BIOS version 9.1. The system works great, but for one thing: I had frequent lockups...
After some time, I started noticing that my lockups occurred only when the system (running Gentoo Linux) was not doing very much (idle, or only doing some browsing with Firefox). Because of that, I started suspecting that my Cool and Quiet-setup had something to do with it: the lockups occurred when my system was running at 1000 MHz, never when running at 2000 MHz. Since I turned off Cool and Quiet (in the Linux kernel, I didn't touch the BIOS-settings) a week ago, I haven't had a single lockup, even though I've kept my computer running 24 hours a day mostly. So I guess my guess was right.
Can anyone explain what exactly is happening? Why is my system less stable when in 1000 MHz than in 2000 MHz? Can I do something to make the 1000 MHz-mode stable and return to running Cool and Quiet?

    hi,
i have the same problem with the same chipset. (even if its another mb)
your post has been a big hint because after my lockups occured i tried to reproduce them with system/cpu torture tests but have not been succsessful. after that i declared that my system has been miraculously cured and went back to normal (i.e. mostly idle) usage and. bang, lockups again. so i disabled cool'n quiet for now and will see if that helps.

  • New K8N NEO2 PLAT. and SC-939 3200+ help needed...

    Hello,
I have just upgraded my system with K8N Neo2 Plat. and sc-939 3200+ A64 Cpu.
There are several issues I need to resolve which are:
1- Although I change from BIOS the settings for AGP to 4x8x and enable fast writes, I still cant see them turned on from the Catalyst Control Center. Everything is greyed out what can I do? They all used to be on and agp was 8x with my K7N2 Delta board....
2- Although I installed the original drivers from the MSI CD, I couldn't get one of the network prts to install. Realtek installed OK. But other one is defined by the device manager as standart network adapter. What can I do?
3- I am brand new to A64 system so I do not know what setting to use from BIOS can you help me out, for instance there are values for HT such as x3 x4 x5  mine is set to x5? what is this? should  I enable cool and quiet, I am not intended to do overclocking. Can you give me some tips for best performance?
    My best regards.

Make sure your bios is up to date: version 1.5. Look at the sticky threads and use the information to enable hidden bios features. Disable ATI/NV speedup in the bios. Uninstall your drivers and reinstall. If the information is still greyed out, download the free version of Sandra here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/ and check the module under video system information. This will tell you if fast writes are enabled and your AGP setting. Leave the HT(hyper-transport) set to 5X unless you plan on oc'ing, if you do oc then may find you'll need to reduce it to 4X or 3X. Try downloading the latest driver for your network from the MSI website. Right click the device in device manager and select update, select specific location then "don't look...I'll choose", direct it to the file where you've unpacked the correct driver and then update.

  • K8N Neo2-F and Floppy

    Hi All,
Just install a new mobo (K8N Neo2-F) and all is good, but I want to update the bios to fix the USB 2.0 problems. I just ordered a new Sony floppy drive and installed it. When I turn on the computer the green light stays on the floppy and it never gets detected (WinXP x64). I checked the power and it's in right and the cable is installed correctly. I did notice that the floppy connector on the mobo is missing pins. Is this by design on this board? Also, I tried booting from a usb floppy to no avail. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks for your help.
    Matt

floppy cable always missing some pins but make sure that pin 1 (red) is on the correct side (see instructions that came with the floppy).  You may need to enable FDC (floppy drive controller) in bios.  You may need to enable USB boot in bios also if that is what you want to use, but this could create other issues I think.  Good luck.

  • Cool and Quiet Not Working

Just re-formatted my hard drive and re-installed everything. Cool and Quiet is enabled in BIOS and AMD drivers are installed. However, according to CoreCenter, the CPU and fan speeds never change. The CPU constantly reads 2.2Ghz. On my previous installation everything worked without a problem and the CPU used to drop to about 800Mhz. Cool and Quiet is enabled in Corecenter.
Does anyone please have any idea what the problem could be.
    Thankyou.

I don't know about fan speeds, Core Center isn't supported on the RS480, so I use PC Alerts 4 utility from MSI. But to check if the CPU is in the low power state, I just go to Control Panel and System then it tells you what your CPU speed is. Alternatively, you can right-click on My Computer and go to Properties, that pulls up the same window.

  • Cool and Quiet question

Does cool and quiet reduce the fan speeds of all the fans plugged into the mobo or just the CPU fan?

CoreCenter's Cool'n'Quiet only adjusts CPU fan speed while AMD's Cool'n'Quiet  adjusts CPU speed. Here's a link to AMD's guide

  • Question vis Cool and Quiet

    OK.
    Software installed
Cool and quiet enabled in Bios before download and installation
Minimal Power Management selected in the Power options
With all that done, surely the System reading should show a slightly lower Clock Speed.
    Currently it's on 2.2 GHZ.
Have I missed soemthing in Bios??
Stop Press, Edit: Ignore my ramblings Richard
After a while the gizmo senses the lesser demand for power and adjusts accordingly
Sit back, and drink those beers

you might need a new bios update.  I did for my venice and my k8neo4 sli plat

  • Cool and Quiet ok to use on NF980-G65 / 965 CPU?

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's safe to use the cool and quiet option in the bios on the NF980-G65 motherboard with the AMD 965 Black Edition CPU.
I had the MSI overclocking center open (I'm not overclocking just monitoring the temperatures) and heard this faint siren sound, thought it was one of my neighbors car alarms.  Once I discovered that it was coming from my computer I opened HWMonitor and noted that the CPU fan was only running at 3%, and I guess that's lower than what ever is configured in the MSI Overclocking center since the alarm noise was coming from the overclocking center.
The CPU was still in the safe zone at about 54°c at the time that the CPU fan was down running at 3%, my guess was due to cool and quiet taking over maybe.
I've read that this CPU can go pretty high in temps but of course we should try to keep it as cool as possible so this leaves me baffled about the cool and quiet (if that's what causes it) to drop the CPU fan down to about 1680RPM since the temps seem like they would have kept rising if the fan doesn't speed up.
Anyway, is it safe to use Cool and Quiet on this mainboard with this CPU?

Unfortunately, I live in a 40+ year old house, in the desert, where our now summer month temps are into the 3 digit marks (100-121°f) and this house doesn't have insulation in the walls so the temps inside are only maintained at 76°f and the computer room is a bit hotter than that even with the central air going and an additional window a/c unit in the computer room.
I am using the Thermaltake Element G box which has a huge fan on the side door, a very large fan on the front, an equally large fan to exhaust on the back, an large fan again on the top of the case and finally, 2 60mm fans on the back to exhaust near the video cards and so my CPU runs probably warmer than the average person that is able to keep their rooms down to 65°f unfortunately.
Anyway, the cool and quiet used to be turned off and I had the other options on so that it would try to maintain the CPU at 45°c which it's perfectly capable of doing when I'm not playing games, and of course it's still capable fo keeping it under 60°c when playing games, and most of the time the temps dont' get above 57°c when playing demanding games but it concerns me that the CPU fan would drop to only 3% using cool and quiet and I'll likely turn it off again but I'm still curious if there is any known issues with running cool and quiet on this mainboard and CPU.
    Thanks for the reply

  • K8N NEO2 PT and 3700+ C'n'Q problem

I have problem with my new 3700+ A64 and Cool'n'Quiet. I updated the bios from 1.5 to 1.8 and even after it, C'n'Q wont work. I have stock clocks and have the C'n'Q enabled in the bios. Can someone help me with this problem ?  C'n'Q worked fine with my old Winchester.

What core your CPU is? San Diego? Or others? Supporting Venice & San Diego & dual core CPU should need BIOS support. It seems MSI has not released new BIOS to support them. They say they are busy testing those CPU now. When would the new BIOS come out? I am looking forward for it.
Yes, this is San diego, but on my older GB K8NS Ultra-939 i didnt need eny bios update to get the C'n'Q work, wierd    Hope so MSI will relase the new bios with San diego support as quickly as possible

  • Reboot problem with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and 250 GB SATA HDD

I'm having a "reboot" problem with my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. After turning my system on it will run without any problems, until I reboot. After a reboot it will always hang after the initial windows-bootscreen. The HDD-light will remain on. If, instead of going into Windows XP SP2, I try to enter the BIOS after a reboot (DEL) the system will also hang (blank screen with blinking cursor).
It started doing this after I installed the Maxtor 250 GB SATA disk. Before, I didn't have problems rebooting. If I disconnect the Maxtor drive I can reboot and enter BIOS and Windows each and every time. Reconnecting the Maxtor 250 GB SATA drive will return the reboot problem. I always have to use the power swith to get a working system again. It's not enough to do a hard reset (this has the same effect as rebooting).
Here are the details of my system:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (BIOS 1.B)
    Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester, 2 Ghz, 512 KB cache, stepping DH-D0)
    2 x Kingston KVR400X64C25/512, 512 MB, DDR, PC3200 (2,5-3-3-8 T1)
Asus Radeon AX800 Pro (256 MB)
    PSU Antec Sonata 380W
HDD Maxtor 80Gb ATA (6Y080P0, Pri Master)
    HDD Seagate 250Gb SATA (ST3200822AS)
HDD Maxtor 250Gb SATA (6V250F0 - jumpered in SATA150 mode, the mobo wouldn't work with the drive in SATA300-mode)
Aopen COM5232/AAH Pro CD-Writer ATA (Sec Master)
BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer ATA (Sec Slave)
P.S. The NVidia IDE-drivers are NOT installed. System is not overclocked.

Thank you for all the replies. Upgrading to the latest Nvidia IDE-drivers did not fix my problem. Moving to other SATA-ports did not help either. Upgrading the mobo's BIOS is not really an option (I'm using one version before the most recent and there isn't anything in the fixlist of the latest BIOS).
Now I've contacted Maxtor for (hopefully) a new firmware.

  • Problem with K8N neo2 plat. and ram

    Hello everyone
Recently I had 2*512mo of PC3200 ( double side ),  they hold all approximately 235mhz has 2.5/3/3/8 1T (tested separately)
But, when I puts them into dual they are stable under memtest always with 235 2.5/3/3/8 1T but are unstable under Windows,  under xp they are stable until 207mhz maximum whereas they hold much higher under memtest
If I want to be stable A 235mhz under Windows it is necessary that I put them in 2T but y' has an enormous loss of perf
I tested different bios (1.37mod, 1.4 official, 1.41mod, 1.5 official, 1.8r3mod, 1.9 official and 1.B4mod) and always the same problem I also tested on port 1 and 3 (near to the CPU) and 2 and 4 but there it is still worse
