K8n neo2 CPU overheat protection and safe temps?

Hello,
K8N neo2 has "CPU overheat protection", what is the cutoff temperature? Does it monitor temperature all the time?
What happens to FX-53 CPU if it heats above 70C and MB does not shut it down?

It does, I ran mine at 1.8v by accident and it got a bit hot Shut itself down and luckily caused no problems

Actually I just finish to setup core temp to shutdown the pc will not happen anymore as I set the temp at 45'c it never go over 40. But it must have already a protection on the CPU as the PC shutdown, if it crashed because of the heat, it will have reboot no ?

K8N Neo2 question about overclocking and sata ports 1 & 2

Hi guys,
I know that when overclocking, sata ports 1 & 2 cannot be locked like sata ports 3 & 4, and therefore hard drives on ports 1 & 2 can be corrupted. However, I would like to understand what is failing when the unlocked ports get overclocked. Is it the motherboard that makes mistakes or is it the drive? Since the ports on the K8N Neo2 are Sata 150 (correct me if i'm wrong), would buying a sata 300 drive be able to survive overclocking? Also, I would like to know the effect of overclocked sata ports on dvd burners as opposed to hard drives. I am looking to buy two new Dvd drives/burners for this board and I would like to avoid buying IDE again.
So, can anyone answer the above questions in detail?

Msi k8n neo2 platinum thermal protection

hi all,
i've this board since 2 days and i am very happy with it.
Actually i am using my amd 3500+@2600 (236x11) vcore 1.55+5% and everything is rock solid.
Cooled by silent boost k8 cooler, the cpu is never overcome 50° after doom3 or superPI tests.
The problems is that in the bios there is no option to power off the mobo immediately if the temp overcome a certain measure or the cpu fan stops working.
I came from a long experience with abit boards and those options were always present.
How can i defend my cpu?

Athlon 64 processors have a built-in hardware-enforced thermal protection (thermtrip)
that will shutdown the core if it exceeds its maximum specified temperature .
This is completely independend from any motherboard-circuitry.
Amd K7 processors don't have this of course and motherboard has the option
to shut down the system at a given temperature.

Neo2 CPU overheat shutdown feature?

Last night Windows XP gave me a message that my computer is about to shutdown due to my CPU overheating. It shut down moments later by itself and I was able to restart it no problem and everything is working fine.
My question is why did this happen only once without changing any settings! Does the MSI mobo have an automatic emergency shutdown feature or is this something windows detects? Also to prevent this from happening again I have enabled the cool n quiet and now it idles at 32c and loaded optimized defaults and it has not happened since.

I know I set the digi cell monitor to around 55c but usually it only gives me a loud warning sound. Where do I go to configure it?

K8N Neo2 CPU Vid, CPU Volt How-to

I've been trying to find the lowest Vcore setting that my box would survive the Prime95 torture test. So far i've had mixed results trying to set Vcore using CPUvid, and CPU volt. I'm using bios 1.3.
I've tried setting CPUvolt to read from the CPUvid ( set at any voltage, ex. 1.525) but to no avail. If i set it this way it won't matter what CPUvid is i will always get the stock Vcore. The only way to get the Vcore to change is by setting the CPUvid to some percentage value over stock. Is this how it's supposed to work? I'd like to do incremental changes like 1.5, 1.525, etc.. but i haven't been able to set Vcore this way.

how come this ?? im using Latest version of BIOS..
I also have these weird shutdowns that im not able to see a solution to, wont power on at all after this happens, i need to unplug the power cord for awhile and
press power button then it startup again...
Im thinking of returning this motherboard seems to unstable for me ! =(

Weird multipel error with K8N Neo2 and XMS Pro 3200LL

Hi everyone, i recently got a winchester 3200 running on my K8N Neo2 Platinum 54G board and i discovered a very weird thing and im not the only one having this problem either with this mobo/cpu. Its a bit hard to explain but i´ll giv it a try.
I can start with my current spec...
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum 54G
AMD A64 3200+ Winchester
Corsair TwinX 1024 XMS Pro 3200LL
2x Maxtor diamondmax s-ata 80BG
Gainward 2400GT GS (6800GT)
Coolermaster Hyper 6 cpu cooler
Tagan 480w psu (28A on 12V)
Then i can continue with saying that this problem that occurs with my corsair memorys dose not happend with Adata vitesta 566 memorys.

Well heres the deal. In normal frequencys, multipliers and dividers this setup runs just fine, but when i try to oc it past 220Mhz FSB only one multiplier will work, regardless of HTT multiplier or any other bios setting. The only cpu multipel that it will boot with in 133 divider is X5 over 220Mhz FSB, with the 166 divider the only cpu multipel that works then is x6, and only the x4 cpu multipel works in 200 divider. Keep in mind that this didnt happend with adata vitesta sticks, it ran fine with every multipel/divider config...
Oddly enough it works fine in 100 divider on the memorys, every cpu multipel works then past 220Mhz FSB. So far i have gotten my winnie stable at 2,6GHz in standard vcore (with adata vitesta in 200 divider or with corsair running in 100 divider, 290x9 on the cpu).
The divider table is as follows with the corsair sticks :
100 divider= every cpu multiplier bootable
133 divider= only x5 cpu multipel is bootable
166 divider= only x6 cpu multipel is bootable
200 divider= only x4 cpu multipel is bootable
With Adata vitesta 566 the following applys:
100 divider= every cpu multiplier bootable
133 divider= every cpu multiplier bootable
166 divider= every cpu multiplier bootable
200 divider= every cpu multiplier bootable
Could someone please tell me what causes this I realize that it´s because of some incompatabillity between my corsair sticks and the mobo/cpu, but what?

im having the same problem running 2x512 crucial value select 3200.
with everything at default speeds, cant lower memory speed or comp crashes before windows loads.
if i take out one stick and just run 512, then i can lower memory to 100. but thats it, except i can do the speeds that u listed with the specific cpu multiplier. with 2 sticks in though i cannot lower the memory speed at all. i cant find any fixes for this, if anyone has any clues please help!

Problem with K8N Neo2

I am having problems with my new MB. I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum ms-7025 and when I go into BIOS it will lock up when I enter the HT Frequency area. I have Crucial Ballistix Memory and am trying to get more than 200fsb.
I have built several other systems and haven't had problems with overclocking before.
I am using a SATA in SATA 1, with an ATI Radeon 9500, 1 gig of Crucial Ballistix memory, an Antec slk 3700bke with 350 watt P/S.

Between this and moving my SATA to 3 I was able to get the system to 233fsb and it posts at 260 fsb.
It locks up during Memtest86 at 260. I'm not sure if it's PowerSupply or Heat, so next on my list of things to do is a new 500+ watt PS and replacing the AMD heatsink.

K8N Neo2-FX nForce3 250Gb BIG problem!!!

i purchased the mainboard: MSI K8N Neo2-FX nForce3 250Gb and a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ now when i installing the WindowsXP in the install it gets stuck! it goes to a about 60% of the unit install or what ever it is called well the last part of the installation any way. its not the memmory it can only be the mainboard?
The BIOS is v1.C

K8N Neo2 Chipset cooling and 1.8 BIOS/temps issue

Hi, Not really a problem thread, more some resolutions I want to share (didn't have much luck finding these answers so thought this might help someone...)
First - I've replaced my chipset cooler with the Vantec CCB-A1C (Copper). I think mine is a fairly late revision board (though I forgot to record/photograph the chip while it was bare ) but the stock HS had the usual rubbish tiny spot of gunk slightly off centre. Gave it a nice (thin but even) layer of AS5 before fitting the Vantec and quite happy with the results: The Vantec is actually considerably louder than the stock fan but by using Speedfan to throttle it back to 50% it becomes almost silent and the chipset temp hardly rises above 26C now (32C idle rising to 40+ under load previously).
And on the temps issue - I flashed the official 1.8 BIOS a little while ago and was disturbed to see my CPU temp go from high 30s to around 19C! There was no way that could have been correct (at least 10 degrees lower than ambient? I'm running an XP-90 but it's not magic!).
So I've been looking for news on these 1.9 bioses and popped in here http://www.lejabeach.com/MSIK8N/k8nneo2.html and found the 1.8F bios. Have flashed and now my CPU is reporting 26C which is at least a bit more like it! My system temp is stable at ~38C, but I have no idea of the location of that sensor so there could be other factors keeping that one high.
One question - does anyone have a definitive list of settings/temp offsets etc for Speedfan? And maybe some diagrams showing sensor locations? /hopeful

are you looking at your bios or are you using something like motherboard monitor?
oh yeah.. btw.. the case temp thermometer is top left... i discovered this with a 120mm fan pushing air over places on the motherboard

These ATI cards 9500 Pro and 9700 Pro ok for MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and winchester cpu? Compatible?

Looking at grabbing a used ATI 9500 Pro or used 9700 Pro AGP card for my MSI Neo2 Plat since I can't use my Matrox G400.
Any problems using either of the above cards? I don't play a huge amount of 3D games so I'm not going to grab a 9800 Pro or XT or 6600GT. A 9500 or 9700 Pro would allow me to play the newer games at reasonable resolutions. Just want to make sure they are compatible.

Ok guys, thanx for the feedback. I missed the 9500 Pro sale, so maybe its for the better. If I'm going to try a bit of 3D gaming, I may aswell get a little bit better card. So here is my question for you folks:
For my MSI K8N Neo2 and AMD64 3000+ system, I want a card that will have good 2D output and good DVD playback. I want to try some 3D games, but don't want to have the minimum. I was looking at used 9500 Pro's and the 9600 XT but I've come across a used 9700 Pro and a 9800 Pro and 9800 Pro with r360 core (almost a 9800XT). So if I get a 9700 Pro, what will I be able to play smoothly at what settings and what will I be unable to play. Ultimately, I may play mostly on my projector at 858 x 484, so maybe the cards don't matter too much. If I don't play 3D games much after a while, I'll probably downgrade, but I want to give it a try. I can't afford a new 9800 Pro/XT or 6600GT.
Used cards I'm deciding between. Have to act fast.
9700 Pro $170 CAD or 9800Pro $210 CAD or 9800 with r360 core $230. Price differences between the cards is as you see there.

MSI K8N Neo2 Temp problems...

I just got this board and plugged my FX-53 into it. In an air conditioned room @ 60'F, a cold bootup and in the bios it says my Mobo temp is 30'C, CPU 40'C. Within 30 seconds, the CPU temp shoots up to 55'C. It then will then sporadically jump between 50'C and 62'C.
I managed to install XP and all my drivers and I downloaded the MSI monitoring program and it listed my CPU @ 74'C and my motherboard @ 9'C...
I'm a bit weary because I don't want to fry my $900 cpu. Is anyone else having problems???
This is with an XP-120 heatsink installed w/AS5 (thin layer, not half the tube )

I noticed that everyone here is complaining about the High Temperatures from the K8N Neo2 Platinum Series for the Socket 939. I too am having difficulties with the temps.
In core center it shows a Temp. at 140°F which to me seems outrageously high. Tech support from MSI told me to physically touch the heatsink and if it felt hot or warm I may have a problem. It did not feel warm at all. However, MSI claims to not be having issues with the Temp readout on the motherboard specified. (See below).

I had the ASUS A8V Deluxe w/ wifi and switched do to some slow boot times and the fact that NVIDIA's chipset is usually better than VIA.
Question is this :
What good quality heatsink and fan should I get for the socket 939 chipset. I see people posting about the Zalman 7000 and Venus 12. But, is there a really good one without necessarily having to take the board out of the case and removing the backplate?
I also see people claiming to have a bios of 1.2 or 1.3. Where do you get these? I can only find 1.1 and that is what I am running and there is no change in temps.

K8N Neo2-F -- Fan On? Fan Off? Cpu...

Just finished putting together a system with the K8N Neo2-F board (specs below). It has the 1.9 bios.
I don't know if this is a problem, but it's certainly strange. When I go into the bios setup and check the PCHealth entry, my CPU fan shows as cycling between 1100 RPM and 0 RPM. If this is accurate, it's a little worrisome - this means the fan is ramping up and down very fast.
Is this something that happens with this particular bios? Should I be worrying about this?

If the temp drops fast, I'd believe the fan is working properly. Anyway, 44-45 under load is very respectable too, I wouldn't dare to doubt your cooling with those numbers, it appears to be doing a great job at it.
And LOL, I remember my mom telling me the same thing your wife did when I built my first PC... then again, I was 12 years old. It was a 8088XT, man those were the days. Building a PC was nuts, now most of the stuff is integrated into the motherboard, back then we had tons of extension cards to put in (motherboards didn't even have I/O and drive controllers!).

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and Speedfan configuration

I'm hoping someone else with a similar K8N Neo2 setup can compare Speedfan notes with me. I'm trying to figure out what maps to what, here's my best guess. Let me know if your best guess differs.
Temp1: System / Case temp
Temp2: CPU
Temp3: Northbridge
Local Temp: CPU Socket sensor
Remote Temp: nvidia 6800 GT GPU sensor
Fan1: Northbridge
Fan2: CPU
Fan3: no sensor
PWM1: Fan1/Northbridge speed control
PWM2: Fan2/CPU speed control
PWM3: Any ideas? I'm hoping this controls voltage for at least ONE of the fan headers on the motherboard, so I can control my case fans. If anyone knows, please fill me in.

C'mon people, doesn't anyone have more info about this subject? I have everything figured out but speed03 and or fan03. I can not seem to control my case fans, only my CPU and northbridge work. I have 2 of my case fans plugged into the mobo and are reading 2700rpms but I can't slow or speed them up no matter what I do. It would be nice to have the system fan controlled my case temps just like the CPU fan is
