K8N Neo2 & Crucial PC3200 2 X 512 (Model: CT6464Z40B) help please!!!

Dear friends:
I just built my first AMD system, with some hesitation to be honest, and of now, the new system has a memory related problem.  I have the following:
Crucial  (512MB X 2) 1 GB  PC3200 400Mhz  CL3 DDR DIMM (Model:
CT6464Z40B)
When I tried to install WinXP Pro for the first time with the two memory modules installed, the system will freeze in the middle of the installation.  When I removed the module from slot 3 (green in color) and leave the other in slot 1 (green), WinXP will load in a breeze.  With WinXP loaded, I re-inserted the module in slot 3 and after a short while the system froze again.  I removed it once more and the system runs as it should.  I removed the module in slot 1 and replaced it with the one in slot 3, and ran the PC with just that one and the PC run just fine, I even installed SP2 and the system runs just fine with one memory module.  My conclusion is that the MOBO doesn't what to run with both modules installed.  I haven't flashed the BIOS yet, that will be my next step.
Could someone please help me set the DRAM configuration in the BIOS.  I know someone out there already has the right settings for the brand and model mention above and running a stable system.
Also please help me decipher what the following means (as far as the sequence goes):  2.5-3-3-5-1T TrC11
                  or
           2-3-2-5-1T 230Mhz    ***** these are not the right ones******
Where do the above go when the sequence in the DRAM in the BIOS in the following:

I give up.  I have messed with every single Memory timing and voltage setting.  One stick of crucial memory works no matter what the settings are, and two sticks of crucial memory throw errors no matter what I do to the BIOS settings.
I took my memory to my friends house, who also has a K8N-Neo2 and it does the very same thing.  There appears to be a problem with this mobo / ram combination.    
I am going to contact MSI about it.  For now, I am just using one stick of the Crucial memory just so I can have a stable system.  
hansh, The reason you aren't having problems is because you are using Ballistix Crucial memory.  chinche and I are using standard issue (read cheaper) Crucial memory.  My friend is also using the Ballistix memory and his system is very stable and the memory even runs in Dual Channel mode!  I'm going to see what MSI comes up with.  If they can't help, I am going to RMA the cheap stuff and go for the Ballistix.
chinche, here is how to decipher the memory timings (at least according to memtest86+)
Tcl - Trcd - Trp - Tras - 1T/2T
They are slightly out of order with the K8N-Neo2 BIOS settings page.
3-3-3-8-2T means
1T/2T Memory Timing = 2T
CAS# latency (Tcl) = 3
RAS# to CAS# delay (Trcd) = 3
Min Ras# active time (Tras) =8
Row precharge Time (Trp) =3
Sometimes people will list @2.6V or @200Mhz also.  This is either the Memory Voltage or the Memory Clock.
If you find the solution, please post it here.  I will do the same.

    The truth is this motherboard/chipset only supports DDR400 speeds... and almost everybody exceeds that speed.

  • K8N neo2 Plat problem with Inno3D 7600GS AGP, help pls...

    Just got the new Inno3d 7600GS AGP card, after installed & while booting up my monitor keep going off and on then suddenly just went off...sometime system freeze when it reach deskstop.
    Sometime lucky enough it will still there and the next few minute the system just freeze.
    After several attemp & no choice, I unplug the power to the graphic card and the problem still exist.
    I am using a HEC 350W PSU.
    I change back to my old ati9200se card & no problem at all.
    I changed to skyhawk 430W still same problem. even I boot up to safe mode still the same. Only time the monitor wouldn't go off untill it pass the winXP logo then the problem appear.
    I got no problem when go to CMOS as well.
    Already perform uninstall previous video driver, update latest nforce driver....all no use.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum - Best CPU upgrade for under £200 please?

    Hi there,
    I currently have an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2ghz running on this board. The BIOS is the latest etc. I am now wanting to upgrade the CPU on this. I run everything at normal settings... don't overclock etc.
    Not sure what I can go to with it and was wondering if anyone can advise please?
    Budget for CPU upgrade is £200... any help would be very much appreciated.

    Do I have to strip the PC to find out which processor I have? The invoice I still have for the PC does not state what type it was. This was not a home built PC and was purchased from an online store in the UK.
    I have a list from the MSI site of processors that this MB is supposed to take. Am I right in saying that I could install an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Skt939 2.4Ghz 512KB Processor?

  • SATA detected as removable device K8N Neo2

    Anyone had Win XP SP2 detecting SATA drives as removable devices and placing the icon in the system tray with this board, Both my SATA drives have now become removable since installing this board under XP with the drivers off the CD and the updated Nforce drivers.

    I have had nothing but problems with my K8N Neo2 PLat mobo with the Crucial Ballistix ram,
    im currenntly stable with them working on dimeslot 3+4 (Slot1+2 crashed system, wouldnt even boot.) but my system feels like its very under performing
    I hope its not to much to ask but could you list you BIOS settings for your CELL menu ???
    also is your timings (2-3-3-8 @1T) faster then what im using...

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with Western Digital 750Gb Caviar Green 32mb

    Hi all, this is my first post and im a bit of a numbskull when it comes to upgrading, thus this post.
    My HDD is on its last legs and I want to get a Western Digital 750Gb Caviar Green 32mb. Im not sure weather it will work with my  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (MS-7025). Can anyone help me out? If you have any suggestions for a better HDD to go for that would also be appreciated, Cheers

    Burst speeds are high mainly because of the disk's cache. That's the only part of the HDD that can get near the maximum bandwdth of the controller.
    The bottleneck for speed is in the fact that the HDD's mechanical properties won't allow it to work faster. With SSD's it is or will be different.
    Back to topic: the WD Green is an excellent choice. I've 6 of those running here now, 5 in a NAS and 1 in my pc and they're simply good. Not the fastest, but very stable, quiet and fast enough.

    I have recentrly bought a MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM together with KINGSTON HYPERX PC3200 1GB KIT (which should run 2-2-2-5-1T)
    But for the moment I only get them stable at 2.5-3-3-8-1T)
    If I change from 2.5 -> 2 NO BOOT , i have to use the reset jumper...
    The voltage I use is 2,75V
    What can you guys suggest ?

    yes, when I changed the 2T to 1T I noticed a rather big diference ...
    but still ... I bought those for the 2-2-2-5-1T setting so I will rma them if I can't get them to run at that speed...
    I have send an email to kingston ... also waiting for their reply ...
    also this evening I will try it with a more powerful PSU !

    I bought a Buffalo 1Gb PC3200 (dd4333L-R1G/MD) for my K8N Neo2 Platinum. I put on the "green" slot (unique RAM Module) and...........Nothing, my "cacharro" dont boot. Is the RAM type (brand, etc) or is "this" particular modula that isbad or something? HELP! please (excuse my english, regards from Chile)

    Try other RAM sockets. Worst case reset the Bios.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum 2 DIMMs won't post

    I have two 512 MB Crucial DIMMs (DDR PC3200, CL=3, UNBUFFERED, NON-ECC, DDR400, 2.6V,  64Meg x 64, Part #CT6464Z40B). If I have either one installed, the system will POST. If I have both installed (I've tried them in both recommended combinations, in DIMM1 and 2 and in DIMM3 and 4), the system won't POST. The D-Bracket displays the Memory Detection Test signal. Since each stick works alone, I don't think either one is faulty. Can anyone explain why this is happening, and how to fix it?

    eVGA e-GeForce6800 128MB DDR AGP 8x
    Antec 380S PSU, 380W.

    im having the same problem. same ram, same motherboard. except when i put the ram in slots 1 and 3 the computer will start up, but it will freeze in windows everytime. what should i do? i want to use all of my ram now only one stick!!!!!!!!!
    and i have updated bios to 1.4 and it still doesnt work

  • Kingston HyperX Memory & K8N Neo2 Platinum

    Hello.
    I have a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum board (BIOS 1.3) with AMD 64 3000+ 939 CPU.
    I am trying to run this with 2 Kingston HyperX PC3200 512MB memory (KHX3200ULK2/1G).  This is the latest "Ultra-low Latency" memory from Kingston.
    When I run this memory with NO overclocking at 2-2-2-5-1 at 2.7 volts (standard setting for this memory) with a single module, I get NO errors.  When I try both chips in dual-channel mode, I get errors (on MemTest86).
    (I also get errors if I run this memory on "Auto" setting in BIOS)
    I CAN run 2 sticks of Crucial PC3200 512MB (regular, not Ballistix)  at standard settings in dual-channel with no errors.
    Has anyone got this memory to work on this board in dual-channel mode?  If so, how? At what timings?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    First of all, I said "in the meantime," meaning until someone else came up with a better answer. If I have problems with memory, regardless of what the manufacturer says' I hunt for a sweetspot (if there is one).

    That's like trying to compare apples to oranges. Two different manufacturers and likely different chips onboard, not to mention likely different PCB design.
    What I suspect is either one stick is further out of spec than the other and they are not a properly matched pair. Kingston has a history with the nForce chipset which leaves little to be desired.
    That is why you might see very similar systems, and one works with the same ram, and the other doesn't. It's called parametric differences. In short, one stick my be at the upper end of the spec and the other stick may be at the lower end. Then, throw in the motherboard, and the CPU, (now with the onboard memory controller) while we're at it, and you have a real touchy situation. There is little room for lower quality. That is why matched pairs exist. Doesn't mean it's mandatory, however.

    I take it you know this person, otherwise this is not making sense or you are a pretty slick hijacker
    Matched set can still be flawed, I get em from the best once in a while. It may not be the RAM at all. Only way to tell for sure is to try it on another identical system or try another pair that passes muster in another identical system. All this speculating is useless unless you've exhausted all possibilities.

    Not wrong, maybe a little overoptimistic. Some situations warrant different measures. It's not that black and white, nor is it written in stone. At this point it only indicates there is indeed a problem, where it lies, would be better off using a dartboard to guess at this point.

  • Sound Question for K8N Neo2 Platinum

    Here's my current setup:
    AMD FX-53
    XP-120 heatsink
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Mobo.
    1 GB Crucial Ballistix (Slots 1 & 2)
    NVidia 6800 GT 256 MB
    200 GB SATA SEAGATE HDD (SATA3)
    Lite-on Dual Layer  (Model# SOHW-1633S BLK)
    Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU
    I am presently using the onboard sound, and I am able to hear left and right channels of sound when using media player, winamp, etc.  I can play both music and dvds.
    I'm using the optical output on my mobo, and sending it to my Sony Home Theatre amplifier with an internal 5.1 decoder.  No matter what I do, I can't seem to get 5.1 surround sound.  I set the MSI Sound effect manager Speaker configuration to 6 Speakers, and I have my CD player transmitting sound via the normal 2 pin cd rom audio cable.
    Does anyone know why I cannot get 5.1 surround sound when listening to DVD's???  Do I need to connect the digital output on my DVD burner?  If so, where does it connect to the mobo?

    My DVD drive didn't come with any kind of driver CD.  I'm trying to use Media Player to run the DVD's.  Is it compatible with Dolby Digital?
    Has anyone ever used PowerDVD?  This software came with the DVD burner, but I haven't installed it as I don't know much about it.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum - satisfied except cold boot

    My new build is doing well except for the near-famous cold-boot problem. When the box has been off for a while, I hit the power button, fans & drives spin up, the optical blinks a couple times, but no video or POST. The LEDs look like 4 green, but 2 seem dimmer, as if they're just reflecting the light from the other 2. A 5-second hiit on the power button shuts it down, hit it again and it fires right up, but stops during post with the message that it's in safe mode and to reset my (nonexistent) OCs. From this point I can F1, boot up, and run for hours. No probs unless it's off for a while. I have seen the problem since early in the build, when I powered up outside the case with just 1 stick of RAM and the LEDs (no vid or drives).
    Searching the board shows a lot of people having the problem, but nobody seems to have a solution, so I went to the support site to check the knowledge-base and FAQs. Interesting to find there that A64 boards do not appear to exist. No FAQ, no option to spec socket 939 or 754 to search the KB.
    Maybe if we get a number of us with the problem to post specs & observations in one thread we can spot a pattern?
    I have noted that I can't just do an on-off-on. It has to spend 20-30 seconds in the lockup mode before cycling the power results in a successful boot.
    BTW all, some really nice things are happening with RAM prices lately. I got my 2 gigs for US$190 delivered.

    Putting HT to 4 does not slow down the box... Especially if ur FSB is over 200 (if ur overclocking) like in my case: FSB=260mhz, I must put down the HT to 4 in order to run everything perfect. HT standard is 200x5=1000, in my case its 260x4=1040... as long as HT is between 800-1200... I believe there is no real time performance loss as long as u have STABILITY.   • K8N Neo2 Platinum Checksum Error

    Hi, I apologize if I break any rules here, but I tried to use the search option to locate an answer but couldn't find anything that helped me fully.
    My problem is that when I try to turn on my computer, I get a message saying:
    "Award Bootblock BIOS v1.0
    Copyright 2000 Award Software Inc.
    BIOS ROM checksum error
    Keyboard error or no keyboard present.
    Detecting floppy drive A media
    INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER".
    Except this, my computer is completely "dead", I cannot go anywhere. From what I have understood, my BIOS is corrupted, and I need to flash it. This should be done by inserting a boot floppy with added AWDFLASH.exe and a bios.bin. The thing is, I don't know how to find these files, or at least the correct ones. I have also tried to google for a solution, but haven't found anything satisfactionary. So this is kind of my last resort. I am very sorry if this is a newbie question, but I have almost no experience in this advanced (from my perspective) knowledge.
    If someone could help me locate the correct verisons of the Award Flash utility and BIOS file, and write a short step by step-walkthrough of how to proceed, you would have my eternal gratitude.

    Not always, the same fake error message can came from bad memory stick too.
    Also he didn't flash his BIOS before the message to appear.

  • K8N Neo2 strange power problem ...

    My specs:
    K8N Neo2 Platinium / Athlon64 3500+/ Antec Neo Power 480W/ 6800GT Winfast/ 2 x 512 MB Kingston HyperX PC3200
    Everything works good but i have one strange problem with my comp ...
    When i turn off system and then i will turn off power supply (Antec Neo Power 480W) my comp is unplugged (no power).
    Then when i turn on power supply (switch on Antec Neo Power 480W) immediately my comp start to live ! But ! There is no system booting ! Only what happen is fans on CPU, mobo, Graphick card and other fans starts working, my neon lights start flashing etc ...
    Then when i push start button system starts booting ...
    The problem is seriuos, coz when i turn off my comp and then in the night they turn of the power and then they turn on the power in my home my comp will start to live ! Fans start to works, neons starts to light etc !
    I'm sure i have correct plugged every wires to my mobo ( i'v check few times with an intstruction).
    What the problem ?

    i called .after stateing my issue i was quickly told to rma the psu. :biggthumbsdown:i called again dreading not haveing the use of my computer for more than a day .and was told this is an issue with abit av8 mobos and msi neo plat. 2.there tech team was currently testing this issue.i was told wo email [email protected] with system specs and issue.i was also told
    there was no reports of hardware failure caused by our issue. :undecided:that was monday and no reply yet.the support person told me that this was a circuitry standard that was used on the 2 different mobo.      i love the power supply.i hope this issue[i know its small]is resolved easily.ive always used antecs products and never had any kind of problems.i still recomend them as well as msi.

    This is my first attempt at building a pc so please excuse any incorrect terminology.

    2 X 160GB SAMSUNG SPINPOINT SATA HDD (plugged into SATA ports 3 & 4)

    PIONEER DVR-108 DVD-RW (IDE)
    SONY FDD
    LOGITECH ULTRA-X PS/2 keyboard
    On initial boot the keyboard lights flash briefly and the keys won't respond (ie pressing delete to enter setup has no effect).  The diagnostic lights are all green except for the top-right which is red ('Initializing Floppy Drive Controller').  All fans are running correctly.
    After about 5 minutes the CMOS setup page appears although the diagnostic lights remain the same ('Initializing Floppy Drive Controller').  At this point the keyboard keys function correctly and I can alter the CMOS settings (including enabling SATA ports 3 & 4 and disabling ports 1 & 2).  The primary boot device is set to CD-ROM and the secondary to Hard disk.  The CMOS recognises the CPU and RAM.
    On saving and exiting the setup (with the Windows XP Pro CD in the DVD drive) the system reboots but once again the keys don't respond and the system seems to stop at the 'Detecting array ...' message.  At this stage the diagnostic lights are now all green except for the top left which is red ('Boot attempt').  Sometimes it remains frozen and on other occasions the CMOS set up page reappears after several minutes.
    If I attempt to boot from 'power off' with the XP Pro CD in, I get a 'Detecting array ...' screen for about 5 minutes and then a 'No disk reserved for RAID use, RAID disabled' message.  At this point I am given the option to press Alt-F10 to enter  the 'Realtek Gigabit Boot Agent' but again the keyboard won't respond and so the system decides to reboot itself and freezes at the next 'Detecting array' message.
    I realise that I'm probably making an incredibly basic error but would greatly appreciate any advice as to where I'm going wrong.

    I disconnected the DVD drive, hard drives and FDD as suggested, cleared the CMOS and booted.  I had no problem accessing the CMOS setup (using the key) although the 'Initializing Floppy Drive Controller' diagnostic lights remained.  The CPU and memory were detected correctly.
    I then loaded the optimised defaults and rebooted, again with no problem.  I then connected the DVD drive and rebooted.  This was detected correctly and so I also added the FDD.  I manually selected the 1.44 3.5 FDD option and then saved and exited.  Throughout this process the diagnostic lights remained the same.
    As soon as I tried to connect a hard drive via the SATA cable the system froze and wouldn't enter the CMOS setup.  The keyboard wouldn't work either.  I tried both drives together, one at a time, tried all four SATA ports in pairs and individually, swapped the SATA cables and had the drives both in and out of the case.  Still no joy.
    I disconnected the SATA cables and rebooted and reached the CMOS setup with no problems, reconnected the cables & rebooted and it locked up immediately.
    Throughout the entire process the diagnostic lights remained the same.
    Any more advice would be most welcome.
