K8n neo2-f nf3 ultra board - onboard nic problem? Please post your experiences

I just ordered the k8n neo2-f nf3 ultra board, with a venice 3500+ chip, from newegg.  I saw various posts on the mobo, however, from people who said the onboard nic doesn't work right out of the box, that they had to go in and manually enter the mac address in Windows that they retrieved from a sticker on the parallel port.
I can deal with a problem like that easily, but I find it hard to believe MSI would ship such a defective board design as that.  Is this really the commonplace experience with this board?  Please post your experience with this board if you've used it or had experience with it

Okay I typed my address under the "network addapters" and I still do not have any internet access.  I even tried to reboot...and nothing.  My computer knows when I have a cable hooked up to the port.  It will tell me "network cable connected" or "network cable unplugged."  I hooked up my netgear network card and I was able to get online.
Should I be messing with the "authentication" tab and/or the IEEE 802.1x setting?
My windows 2k computer has a broadcast "node type" while me K*N Neo2 board does not have a line for node type (under ipconfig).  Also my XP computer does not have a line that will tell me the values for: DHCP Server and DNS Servers.  It also has a no value for the default gateway line.  It DOES have a value for the "Connection Specific DNS Suffix".  It is for comcast.
I hope all this is not too confusing.  I was trying to list all the questionable settings.  What should I try next?
Thanks!
Well, if you're wondering about the 'dhcp server', 'dns servers', 'default gateway', etc., that is all in the 'Network Connections' folder which can be reached from the Control Panel.  To get to those settings, you right-click on the 'local area connection' that corresponds to the onboard lan, and click 'properties'.  Then, select 'network protocol(tcp/ip)' in the list of networking components and click the 'properties' button.  That will bring up the set of tabs where you can set those properties (although there is no 'dhcp server' address setting, just the option to either specify an address or use dhcp to automatically assign an address).
I get the impression, though, that you're saying if you slap in a pci network card, it connects right away, so I doubt any of those settings are needed (unless you left out the part about going into the tcp/ip settings for the pci nic and specifying an address, etc., which I doubt you did).  Have you considered contacting msi tech support on the problem?  If it's a new board, I'm sure you're entitled to free tech support.  It seems like, with all of the chatter on these boards over this issue, they should be well aware of it and be familiar with the ways to 'fix' it.

  • MSI Neo2 users, cpu temperature!!!, please post yours!!!

    Hi Guys
for the MSI Neo2 865PE users,i want to know, what is your guys cpu temperature while your computer is idle and stressed/underload.
    my rig:
    MSI Neo2-S (bios ver.1.0) P4 2.4C @stock speed with stock heatsink fan
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro (not oc'ed)
80 GB WD and 60 GB Seagate HDD
Antec 1080 AMG with 430Watt psu
    4 fan running = 2 intake 2 blow out
    Sound Blaster Audigy
    1x512 MB Ram Kingston
    and,
i'm using pcalert4, and it shows:
    CPU idle=45 Celcius
    CPU when playing games=60 Celcius
    System Temperature = 29-32 Celcius
please post yours, please... because, i think it is too hot for p4 to have that kind of temperature.
    thank guys!!!

I am wondering how accurate the sensors are on these boards.
I don't think MSI (nor any other manufacturer) has a step to calibrate the temperature sensors, so the answer is - not much
They are just relative temp readings, and probably vary from board to board.
    Quote
system temp. Board readings are from 39c to 43c but the air temp coming out the back 120mm fan is 31c to 33c.
Air cooling is achieved by transferring heat from hotter components to the cooler air. This will raise the temperature of the exhaust, but never higher than your hottest component. It actually depends where the sensor is located. If you put a card on the PCI slot above the Winbond chip, you would probably observe higher SYS temperatures.

  • SATA RAID problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum (nForce3 ultra) & winXP x64

I entered on MSI driver dowload page, put my model, and i found out that the RAID driver for win x64 wasn't released (nforce3 ultra), but in the same page was the driver for the nforce4, so I supposed it was compatible. I made the driver disk. press F6 and he askme for the drivers, ok, i introduce BOTH drivers, he detects perefctly the SATA RAID (stripping) format the disk, copy the files and ask me for some .CATof teh raid driver that wasn't on the zip file.... omit files, reboots, completes the instalation, but on the first boot of win x64 when it's just about to show the windows screen, a bue windows, and resets the pc so fast that's unreadable.  fail safe start.. same crash.
I Installed win on an IDE and it run prefectly... In th other hand... without installing any driver the windows instalation recognices the SATA drives, but not the RAID. Maybe I just got to install the raid driver but not the SATA driver... the nforce3 driver form nvidia.com is pretty old... The real funny is that when i installed winXp x64 BETA i hadn' any problem... (winXP 64 doesn't admit the 32 bit driver=
Which driver i'm supposed to install? to INSTALL winxp64 on a SATA RAID and make it boot from there?

  • K8N Neo2 platinum (nF3) + San Diego?

Will it work, does anyone know? I have a Venice now and a San Diego arriving on Friday, just wanted to know if it works or not so I may have to cancel the order if necessary. I wish MSI kept ahead like DFI on the BIOS front!

Hmm… seems like they have removed both venice and san diego from testing phase and OK status in the K8N Neo2 support list, which were there some days ago.
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=607&kind=1
Something is going on – maybe 1.6 wasnt fully compatbile with venice/san diego - hopefully a new 1.7 bios ?
I can´t see why venice / san diego would not work with a proper biosupdate – but as you said – they are late with bios updates.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum & 6800GT/Ultra question...

OK, my rig is in my sig and I no some ppl have issues with 6800 + Neo2 plat.
I have the 6200 softmodded to a 6600, does that mean if I want to upgrade to a 6800 I wouldnt have issues or is there stil a big chance?
    Thats all.
    Thanks for any reply's
    J0hn

6800GT offer much better value and will O/C to Ultra stock speeds or more. Your using AGP and over here (UK) AGP 6800GT have just come down in price.  You can pick them up (stock 256DDR) from £215 -/+ £235, Ultra's £295 -/+ £350 (7800 have forced the drop). But not in PCI-E though just AGP which is wired as it looks like PCI-E users are getting a raw deal, as PCI-E just offers SLI over AGP at present. No game has used the bandwith that AGP X8 offers. So PCI-E has no real advantage (SLI only)  I upgraded to a new spec, 3 weeks ago and when for the 6600GT due the cost performance. Its about what you want to play and how long you intend/wish to use the card. If your running games 1280x1024 - 1600x1200 + then the 6800GT will give you good/better frame rates (than a 6600GT). Below 1280 1024 the 6800GT offers a bit more over the 6600GT (depending on app/game) but @ a cost. At the end of the day its really about how often you can aford buy a new card. Twice a year @ £200-300 + ???? or once every year or 2.   My old 4200TI runs all the games I play not always at high res/frame rates but there playable and this is 3 years old +. Just until BF2 came out the card anit got the tech to play it so speed/power is good but only until a game comes out the card can't support !
6800GT gets my vote, I could have got an 6800GT but got 6600GT so I could buy an extra 1GB of ram. I just love the tast switching speed and amount of apps this lets me run.

  • SATA on K8N Neo2 Plat nForce3 Ultra - Hot Swappable?

I'm thinking about adding two SATA drives to my system. I won't be using RAID.
I remember reading that it is best to use SATA sockets 3 and 4, rather than 1 and 2. Can somebody explain to me why that is.
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul.

    Hello Gents,
instead of starting a new thread here, and since it is on the Sata ports, has anyone been able to make them Hot swapable??? Of course Windows sees them as a Hot Swap, which leads me to this question, I have an Addonics Swap tray installed on SATA 1 A Mirrowed Raid on 2 and 3. The swap tray is for Data Backup, when you attemp to stop the drive, you get the dreaded Volume drive in use, try agian later, even though nothing is being written to it. I was told that this is a Board issue with the drivers for the Nforce chip.

Live update using a floppy....this is my 3rd MSI board and ive done the same on all with never a problem to date...I just thought the 1.80 was new enough to have all the changes...excect the usb 2.0 update...
SanDiego 3700 is fully supported from 1.B , thats why 1T/2T isn't coming up as a choice if using an older one (2T is set as default) .
Other than that the 3700 runs fine with 180 .
    Edit:
Btw 1C bios isn't offered via liveupdate (only 1B).
If you wan't 1C based BIOS you have to get it manually and flash manually with your own made boot bios disk of winflash 1.76 .

What core your CPU is? San Diego? Or others? Supporting Venice & San Diego & dual core CPU should need BIOS support. It seems MSI has not released new BIOS to support them. They say they are busy testing those CPU now. When would the new BIOS come out? I am looking forward for it.
Yes, this is San diego, but on my older GB K8NS Ultra-939 i didnt need eny bios update to get the C'n'Q work, wierd    Hope so MSI will relase the new bios with San diego support as quickly as possible

Check out this very brief thread of mine:
    http://80.190.215.245/index.php?topic=103825.0
...If your 3500 is a 90nm San Diego core, there's really nothing new for you there.
If it's an earlier core, though, you might have difficulty in supporting all four 512mb DIMMs at 200/400MHz.  The San Diego 3700+ core I just bought to replace my 130 nm A64 4000+ has the same 1mb L2 cache as the A4000+ it replaced, but an improved memory controller which will support 4 double-sided 512mb DIMMs in this motherboard at full speed of 400MHz DDR.  The 3700+ is 90nm, and is simply generally a better core in terms of errata, power consumption, and, if you ever feel the need to experiment, overclocking.  I would imagine you should be able to pick one up at < 200 pounds, your cost (my keyboard doesn't have a "pound" key...)
My last post in the thread mentions what bios version you should run with this cpu.
Also, unlike the Newcastle or Winchester A3500+ cores, the A3700+ San Diego 90nm core supports SSE3 intructions.  Here's an article you might care to read describing some differences between the A3500+ Newcastle and Winchester cores:
    http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.aspx?articleid=613&cid=1
Here's a current link to the 3700+ cpu for sale:

Many thanks for your reply, much appreciated. However a lot of that has just gone right over my head I'm afraid :(
Do I have to strip the PC to find out which processor I have? The invoice I still have for the PC does not state what type it was. This was not a home built PC and was purchased from an online store in the UK.
I have a list from the MSI site of processors that this MB is supposed to take. Am I right in saying that I could install an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Skt939 2.4Ghz 512KB Processor?
Once again many thanks for your help.
    Gazza.

  • K8N Neo2 F - Which Floppy Drivers To Use??

    Hi all;
Hope someone can shed some light. I am trying to re-build an MSI K8N Neo2 F, nForce3 Ultra skt 939 motherboard. I see on the drivers download page two possible choices for the floppy SATA drivers to load during Windows install:
nVidia nForce3/4 SATA RAID Driver (For floppy driver) (7-17-2006)
    and the file
    Nvidia nForce3 SATA/RAID driver for Windows 2K/XP (6-23-2004)
Which one to use?? Certainly the most recent would be my pick, but anyone know the differences??
I re-built the drive using the disk drivers supplied with the motherboard. It was labeled:
    G72-NVSA041
    For nVidia CK804 & CK804-A2
    Version: 5.10.2600.0479
And the controllers show up as nForce 3 250GB in hardware manager. Would the Ultra boards show their controllers as being 250GB ones?? Thanks for any answers!

    losmeme,
Download the nForce 5.10 Drivers from the nVidia Website, use WinZip to extract them and put the SATA RAID Drivers on a Floppy and use them.
