K8N Neo2-FX new CPU temperature problem

Well, I'm not sure if this problem is unique, but I didn't find any help by using search or google.
Problem is this: CPU temperature keeps going up slowly but very persistent and then the computer shuts down about somewhere between 80-82 degrees Celsius (says BIOS). Heatsink is warm when is touch it, i would say the CPU is max 40-50 degrees "hot". CPU is 3500+ Venice. These 2 are brand new parts. BIOS version is 1.B.
Computer was running fine one evening, night and morning (about 10 hours) with Windows XP, and then all started: shutdown. I waited couple minutes, re-started, went to BIOS H/W monitor. Temperature reading was about 50, then it was slowly rising to 80 degrees and shutdown. I instantly restarted and went to BIOS. Temp was about 70 and rising. I shutdown it manually, touched the heatsink and it felt perfectly normal (warm). I'm using the boxed cooler that came with the CPU. Fan speed is about 3150 rpm.
Right now only attached parts are PSU, MB, CPU, AGP card and 512MB DDR so I just can go to BIOS and check the temp. I have tried different PSU, AGP card and memory, the problem stays. It always starts from a reasonable value: 25 degrees after being down for a while and higher if i have tried it on. It takes about 2 minutes to go from 30 to 80 degrees.
Is this a sensor problem, CPU problem or what? One more notice: Motherbard monitor gave strange temps in Windows. Most of the time it was OK (50-55), but then both values were 0, and then back to normal. I  noticed the zero values before the 1st crash too so this can be a sensor problem.
Installation failure is not possible, i have worked with computer HW over 10 years. I removed the heatsink, put it back and it fits perfectly. There is no way the CPU is 80 degrees hot. I've touched thousands warm heatsinks.
Should I send the MB/CPU package back or do you have any tricks I can try?
Thanks for reading and sharing my pain

I didn't change the thermal compound when I removed the heatsink. I checked that it is OK, some sort of gray grease, but not anything compared to arctic silver, but not a rubbery "pad" either.
Like I said that original compound is a one shot deal.  It needs to be replaced... with the same material according to AMD for warranty purposes.

- I decided to start the computer to Windows, everything seemed to be ok, MBM showed 42 degrees about 1 minute. Then it got to 45-46 and stayed there.
- I downloaded the SpeedFan and installed it. Core temp 45, Vcore 1,40 - 1,41V. Stared the screen couple minutes, stable.
- I decided to try with a load. I Started 3DMark2001 for 5s and shut it. Core temp was 65! Very fast peak  Then it went down to 53 and the weird dance began... 53-63-54-64-54-64-53-63... with the same rate than SpeedFan refresh rate. This state was stable now, I stared the screen 5 minutes and the graph showed 10 degree peaks all the time, fully idle CPU.
- Another start with 3DMark, now 30s and i halted it. 80 degrees! Heatsink was as warm as normal heatsink can be in idle computers. And then it went back to 53-63-53-63 dance.
- 15 minutes passed and I decided to boot to see BIOS values.
Weirdest part: BIOS is showing 67 degrees, rising 1 degree/ 2 secs to 80 and shutdown  Vcore 1,37 - 1,39.
Conclusion: Windows is more stable than BIOS  In BIOS it raises the temp to 80 and crashes, but in Windows I can do surfing and normal work and the temps stays reasonable as long as I put minimal load to CPU.
Like Syar said, CPU "halts" in Windows will result in lower temp.
Quote
Now I really think there is some kind of sensor failure. 10 degree dance in idle state is not normal. Fast peaks are normal if the heatsink is not touching the whole CPU (core) surface, but in this case it's fine. Crashing in BIOS is 1st time for me if the computer is idle stable in Windows. I'm sending both back, CPU and MB.
When you get the 10 degree jump, what does SpeedFan show for CPU usage?  Also Look in Task manager/Performance to see what the CPU graph looks like and if you run Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com you will be able to see which process is using CPU.  It sounds to me like there is a process which is running at some interval and that just a small amount of CPU usage is boosting temperature excessively.  Before giving up on it, I'd recheck heatsink fitting with fresh thermal compound -- a good heatsink paste, like Artic Silver will be sufficient -- to be sure, before giving up on it.

    Hi.

and the problem is the cpu temperature and kinda noisy fan... newest core center reports 41-42 degrees and 1390rpm when computer is idle, on mine it's around 35 degrees
and 2800rpm. amd drivers are installed, power saving settings are set to minimum cool'n'quiet is enabled, d.o.t. is disabled, but still, core center reports speed as 210x10 = 2100mhz and it should be less when idle... 1000mhz or 800mhz they say... another interesting thing is that core center reports north bridge fan speed as low, while bios health status

  • Weird CPU temperature problem

    Hi everyone.
The first time I run my system in the morning,  I'm having high CPU temp readings by Core Center: 71 C, at around 40% CPU usage, running Norton Antivirus '05, and 67 at iddle. In the same conditions, Motherboard Monitor 5 reads: 67 C for N. Antivirus and 63 C at iddle.
So, I restart computer and check BIOS's PCHealth Status. It reads 46 C for CPU temp.
Then I get back to Windows XP (SP2), Core Center reads CPU temp while running N. Antivirus as 53 C, and MBM reads 50 C at 40%-80% CPU usage. At iddle, Core Center reads 49 C, and MBM5 reads 45 C.
Environment temp is about 30 C.
What do you guys think is happening? Do I need to worry about it or not?
Thanks in advance for your input.
    My System:
    Windows XP PRO (SP2)
    MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum BIOS 1.30
    Athlon64 3800+ no OC
    Leadtek A400 6800GT 256 MB
    Crucial Ballistix PC4000 2x 512 MB slots 3 and 4
    Zalman 7000B AlCu
    Vantec Stealth 470A
    Raptor 74GB SATA
    Barracuda 7200.7 160 GB SATA
    SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum
    NEC 3500 DVD-RW
    Samsung SB616 DVD-ROM
    SpeedTouch 330 ADSL modem.

I was having the same problem as described by the forum user.  Despite my laziness, I even unhooked my CPU fan clean the fan and the CPU and put it back together with Arctic silver.  This helped the idle temperature at START up from 50 degree C down to 43 degree C reading from Core Center.  However, eventually the CPU temp will creep back up to 47 to 50 degrees C.
My breakthrough came when I read one of the thread which said to uninstalled Core Center, once I done that, my CPU temperature at Cold Start and Warm Start seemed to be consistent at around 36 to 40 degree C (I used SpeedFan 4.18 to verify my temp readings I even crossed check the temp reading with SisSandra 2005 and the two readings are consistent).
I then installed CoreCEnter 1.7.1.0 back and during cold start the temperature will creep back up and keep on increasing.  Once I do a warm start everything is back to normal again.  So after cold start I open both SpeedFan and CoreCenter side by side and I notice the following:
During cold start, CoreCenter never starts the CPU fan at max RPM, it starts around 2200 RPM or so.   Then it would start loading the CPU varying from 1 to 4 to 100% (this happens intermittently so you won't see it if you are not staring at the screen), which would increase the CPU temperature (this is observed in the SpeedFan monitoring screen).    Then it would lower the CPU fan back to 1850 RPM or so and does not increase the fan speed even when temperature goes back up.  The problem does not seem to exist when one does a warm start then CoreCenter lets the fan stays at maximum speed and the temperature is stable.
I noticed when I downloaded the new CoreCenter version 1.7.1.0 software from the MSI web site, it said "fixing fan speed never reach maximum problem", so I believe this is a CoreCenter software bug.  BTW, I just went back to the MSI tech support web site; it no longer showed this message.  I have a feeling that they removed the message from potential liability with high temperature issue that might have led to many MB returns.  (I know this is sounding awfully like a conspiracy theory)
    This is my conclusion:
    (1) CPU temp reading from core center is accurate minus about 3 to 4 degree C cross checked again other utilities.  (If you system reaches 60 to 70, I should still be alarmed, do not just let the system idle, because it could be an actual reading minus 3 to 4 degrees).
    (2) CoreCenter never let the fan reaches maximum speed during cold start and will load the system gradually therefore increase CPU temperature even more.
    (3) After warm start, Core Center goes to normal and let the CPU fan goes back to maximum speed.
I know this is not a very scientific observation, nevertheless it is reproducible on my system.  Please note that I have a Neo Pla set up not Neo Pla 2 therefore results might be different if you have a Neo Pla2 set up.  I really doubt that would be the case since CoreCenter only has one version for both motherboards.
Please give this a try and see what you find, I am curiously to see what other gets.  If we can all produce the same issue, perhaps MSI will come out with an updated version of CoreCenter again.

  • K8N Neo2 + Maxtor DiamondMax 10 (SATA) problems!

    hello.
i wanted to know, if anyone knows a working solution for the problem that the nforce3 chipset / nvidia sata controller / mobo bios or just (some?) k8n neo2 mobos causes the system to freeze while booting when a maxtor diamondmax 10 is installed?
for anyone who still has problems: a temporary solution for 1-drive-users is to plug the drive to the sata4 port (right between the agp and the cpu socket), instead of plugging it to sata1, which would be the correct procedure under ordinary circumstances though.
i found out that my own system was highly unstable as long as i connected the drive to one of the first two sata ports. the other ones worked better. is the problem limited to sata 1/2 on everyone's board? if not, it would be RMA-able.
but there is another thing besides the instability of these expensive pieces of trash (sorry, no other hard drive and mobo has given me a harder time yet!) that bothers me more:
why is my maxtor diamondmax 10 6b300s0 so noisy? on idle it runs very smooth and is quiet, but under heavy load it almost roars as loud as my old u2w-scsi drives i had back in 1995. could it be that windows or the sata controller does not turn on the cache?
i hope, somebody can share his experience.
    wan-hi

I've got the neo2 and 2 Diamondmax 10 Maxtors in RAID1. I've had loads of trouble as well... Today is my first day without a freeze and hard reboot needed. I started building (slowly mind you) about 3 weeks ago.
If this is actually stable now, perhaps you can try a similar setup. All these steps had frequent hangs and re-attempts.. I got through in the end tho. (Doesn't instill confidence that you have a stable build tho!!)
I have the 2 drives on SATA 3,4
All SATA BIOS settings are enabled (inc port 1,2 settings)
I used the 2 RAID drivers on the supplied floppy disk (same revisions as on the website currently)
I installed WinXP with service Pack 1 built in (is that what people mean when they say a streamlined XP install?)
After updating all the motherboard drivers etc, I installed Service Pack 2. With SP2 I had frequent unrepeatable hangs, but cpu burn type programs and games wouldn't trigger it.
Only office type work/browsing seemed to kill it.
I switched to a USB mouse from PS2, and that seemed to help.
Last thing I tried was uninstalling SP2 and it's lasted all day now. Longest strtech previously was 3,4 hours of intermittent use.
I agree with you about the noisy Maxtors though.. I had a Seagate Barracuda before and that was really silent. These don't whine at all but clatter when seeking.
Apparently with the Diamondmax 9's you could use a Maxtor utility to quieten (slow) the seeks, and a IBM/Hitachi util also worked.
I can't get either to work cos the 10's are SATA only drives. Maxtor util only works with IDE (or perhaps SATA non RAID), and IBM just fails to see them.. shame. I think the Maxtor util might work with some other, older SATA controllers... have to track someone down with a compatible setup who doesn't mind me carving up their machine. Actually haven't tried adjusting when the drives aren't RAIDed.. hmmm.

As mentioned you should look on how many AMPS the PSU delivers on the +12v rail.
And as we can see here it has 22 amps on the +12v rail. Not too little but then again not much. I see no reason why you should go with a more expensive Antec over the Tagan.

Then it is loading for a quite long while but after that a bluescreen shows. And it stands "Unkown hard error" and my question for YOU is what it means?
NOTE that i've tried many times but the exactly same bluescreen shos
Note also that for a week ago i had a ATI Sapphire 200 with x300 onboard. The same rigg but not a single problem. So i supose there is a problem with the motherboard?
    What should i do?

  • K8N Neo4/SLI - New CPU: Athlon 64 X2 3800+ OR AMD Athlon 64 4000+

I want a new CPU ... Which of these will make a bigger difference over my current Athlon 64 3000+
Or would someone please suggest a better CPU (under ~$90).  TIA!

Thanks for the help!  I use the system for some gaming, media "server", burning DVDs, and usenet mostly.  But the biggest reason why I want to upgrade is that I run TVersity http://www.tversity.com/home (software to stream any video through an XBox 360 to your home theatre).  Because the XBox 360 will only play .wmv files without 3rd party software (TVersity).   TVersity requires a powerhouse computer because it converts (on the fly) any video extension to .wmv and streams it out to the XBox 360.  If the PC isn't powerful enough the video stutters and the audio skips.

But how can it be true as I have done my partitions more than once !
Once under XP install, once with PartitionMagic
And if i create a partition copy a file and rar it there I have a CRC error
What can i do now I am sick of reinstalling again and again XP !
Can it be the sata cable ? from MSI by the way ... and the hitachi test tool told me that the HD is OK
I have done installs without installing Nividia 5.10 drivers it doesn't help
Do I have to install only 5.03 drivers from MSI ?

If memory voltage is left on auto it defaults to 2.5v which may be underpowering your ram & causing the CRC issues.
That's quite not true though this "legend" is posted a lot
If left on "auto" memory voltage is set via reading the SPID-info of the ram. You can easily check this with a multimeter. On my sys the voltage is set correctly to 2.7V with my corsair memory.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat IDE and SATA problems

Last night I was able to install XP onto a Raid 0 set up with 2x36 GB Raptors. (These were on Sata3/4 as I had heard about oc problems with the other Sata ports).  No other drives were installed. After installing XP I decided to shut down and add a 40 gb IDE drive that had several things I needed (like programs!) and also installed another Sata drive, this time it was on Sata 2.
(I did discover that the system will not boot if there are drives on IDE2 (optical drives) while IDE1 is empty... so moved the optical drives to IDE1)
After installing the two extra drives I booted up. Fine. But when I went to change a display setting, got BSOD.
So went back and tried again to setup the Raid 0 and install XP. Even without the extra drives, no luck.
After third attempt, I gave up on Raid and just installed XP onto one of the Raptors that was on either Sata 3 or 4. No other HD's installed.  It worked.
Then went back and tried to stick that 40gb IDE in and the 80gb Sata.
Ack! No boot and got a hal.dll error. Googled that and I guess it has some sort of virus or whatever. Figures. Okay. Disconnect both the 40 and 80 and it boots.
This time tried just with the SATA 80 (in addition to boot drives). No luck. Get an error saying that it can't find boot drive or something like that.
Next tried to move the Sata cables around, putting the true boot drive onto Sata1. Of course it didn't work and NOW (after putting the cables back the way they were for the boot drive i.e. Sata3/4 (not sure which) the system will not boot at all giving the "no system disk" error.
If I had hair to pull out it would be gone.
When looking into the BIOS I see that the 2 36gb Rap's are on IDE channel 5 and 6.
I don't know what BIOS I am running.
Is there some sort of "priority" that XP assigns to various IDE channels? Sata ports? At this point I could care less about overclocking, so am thinking of putting the 2 36gb Rap's on Sata 1/2 and starting from scratch trying to install XP on Raid 0 (yes, I installed the Raid drivers from a floppy). Shouldn't that work? I might end up just using the 80 gb SATA drive as the boot drive and not using the Raptors.
    Someone please save me!

Be interested how stable your raid setup stays? See my post https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=94536.new#new
Been driving me crazy. System stays stable, now I've ditched raid, as long as the other Raptor doesn't have XP on it. It seemed that XP was seeing two disks instead of one at close down when I had raid installed and writing to just one - very weird - which blew the array. Never had these problems with Promise Sata Raid.  I suspect, like many others, that NV have a driver problem.
You know... you didn't really HAVE to share this info with me!!
Let's hope it stays stable. If not, then I will get a different Raid controller.
Along with backing up my data on that array as soon as I can!

...If your 3500 is a 90nm San Diego core, there's really nothing new for you there.
If it's an earlier core, though, you might have difficulty in supporting all four 512mb DIMMs at 200/400MHz.  The San Diego 3700+ core I just bought to replace my 130 nm A64 4000+ has the same 1mb L2 cache as the A4000+ it replaced, but an improved memory controller which will support 4 double-sided 512mb DIMMs in this motherboard at full speed of 400MHz DDR.  The 3700+ is 90nm, and is simply generally a better core in terms of errata, power consumption, and, if you ever feel the need to experiment, overclocking.  I would imagine you should be able to pick one up at < 200 pounds, your cost (my keyboard doesn't have a "pound" key...)
My last post in the thread mentions what bios version you should run with this cpu.
Also, unlike the Newcastle or Winchester A3500+ cores, the A3700+ San Diego 90nm core supports SSE3 intructions.  Here's an article you might care to read describing some differences between the A3500+ Newcastle and Winchester cores:

Many thanks for your reply, much appreciated. However a lot of that has just gone right over my head I'm afraid :(
Do I have to strip the PC to find out which processor I have? The invoice I still have for the PC does not state what type it was. This was not a home built PC and was purchased from an online store in the UK.
I have a list from the MSI site of processors that this MB is supposed to take. Am I right in saying that I could install an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Skt939 2.4Ghz 512KB Processor?
Once again many thanks for your help.
    Gazza.

  • K8N Neo2 Lost Bios/Power on problem

    Hi,
Apologies if this question has been asked many times before but it is driving me nuts.
    Problem 1
Approximately every 1 in 5 reboots the BIOS resets to default settings resulting in a sytem hang which can only be resolved by resetting BIOS settings to more suitable settings for my system. Repeat process every other night until steam comes out of ears in frustration.
    Problem 2
When power supply is switched on at the plug socket the system boots up even though I have not activated the switch on the front of the case.
I have contacted www.lowestonweb.com who supplied the board and they have offered to send a new battery out for me to try but I am not convinced this will make any difference.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dustbag

    Hi,
I have recieved a reply back from MSI Tech support which suggested updating the Bios, I had already done this and it made no difference.
I have also had a reply back from www.lowestonweb.com who said they would send me out a new battery (hasnt arrived yet), they have also said I can send the board back if I want.
    Couple of questions:
    1. Has anyone ever resolved the problem of the computer switching on without the power button being pressed? (Other thaqn leaving it switched on permanently at the power socket)?
    2. Has a new battery resolved this problem for anyone?
    3. If I do RMA the board can anyone suggest an alternative board (must have an AGP port as I cannot afford the replace GFX card)
    Thanks from a very frustrated,
    Dustbag

  • MSI K8N Neo2-FX - WinXP-sp2 USB problem

    HI!
Two weeks ago I Bought this mainboard, and I can't install the Usb2 driver.
I have Windows XP with service pack 2, and it doesn't recognize the Usb ports as Usb2.
On the driver disc which were provided with the mainboard there were a driver, but only for the English version of WinXP-sp1.
My question is: Where can I get the drivers I need, or what did I wrong?
I downloaded all the stuff from this homepage, but these doesn't contain the %!!/@^ Usb drivers
    Pleeeeeeeese help!

Well, the problem is still on.
    1) I read carefully the Instruction manual, and it says that there is no mistake, I REALLY have usb 2.0 ports. (8 pieces to be precise)
    2) In the BIOS I didn't find that option you mentioned.
There are three options related to the Usb:
      a) Onchip Usb (enabled/disabled)
      b) USB kb/storeage support (enabled/disabled)
      c) USB Mouse support (enabled/disabled)
I tried all the possible combination, but when i connect my pendrive to the computer it says (I don't know what the english Windows say, but I try to translate): This device is capable work faster, if you attach it to an USB2.0 port. (instead of saying "High speed USB Device is connected to a slower port", which appaers when using USB1.1 ports on an other comp.)
    What can you suggest????
(I have sp2 with latest drivers possible)
