K8N Neo2 good for overclocking?

I own a K8N Neo  Plainum, and much like most people here, im less than impressed  with it's overclocking ability.
I Have been keeping an eye on these forums for some time, and trying the various beta bioses with little to no improvement. Unfortunately, i have 3 sata drives and have no choice but to use both controllers.
In regards to the subject, i am really tired of waiting for the k8n neo  to do what i want it to do, so i have two options, get a k8n neo2 or get a  skt754/939 alternative brand board. My 3400 clawhammer is nice, but im just as happy to buy a socket 939 if the neo2 overclocks as well as the neo1 should have.
So you people with neo2 boards, lets see your results, and complaints etc, before i buy it this time
btw, the best i've achieved on this mobo is
http://leet.customer.netspace.net.au/4006.JPG
and no that's not stable, i can prime 215HTT at best approximately.
For those people that are gonna ask my pc specs, here they are.
K8N Neo Platinum
Athlon 64 3400+ Clawhammer
1Gb Corsair TwinX DDR500PRO
1 x 36Gb raptor as boot drive and 2  x 200Gb sata in raid0
i think that's all that's relevant.
I look forward to your help guys

Well i got my mobo doing 11 x 260 on my fx53 all day long it will do higher some peeps have had them up to 295 is the highest I have seen so they are ok if you can get over all the other problems

Are you using CoreCenter to overclock? What version is your BIOS? Post system specs.

the overclocking is done solely in bios.
Anyway, there seems to be different problems relating to waking up from sleep, I know that Cool'n'Quiet would stop working when I would wake up from sleep. I'll try overclocking mine a bit and I'll get back to you.
Also, check that the Save/Clear CMOS jumper is in the right position.

  • K8N Neo2 question about overclocking and sata ports 1 & 2

    Hi guys,
I know that when overclocking, sata ports 1 & 2 cannot be locked like sata ports 3 & 4, and therefore hard drives on ports 1 & 2 can be corrupted.  However, I would like to understand what is failing when the unlocked ports get overclocked.  Is it the motherboard that makes mistakes or is it the drive?  Since the ports on the K8N Neo2 are Sata 150 (correct me if i'm wrong), would buying a sata 300 drive be able to survive overclocking?  Also, I would like to know the effect of overclocked sata ports on dvd burners as opposed to hard drives.  I am looking to buy two new Dvd drives/burners for this board and I would like to avoid buying IDE again.
So, can anyone answer the above questions in detail?
    Thanks,
    Steven

But is it the HDD itself that fails at the higher frequency?  Or is it the HDD controller on the motherboard that fails?  What about DVD drives?  And what if the HDD is SATA 300 instead of SATA 150?

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum resets overclock....

    Hello
K8N Neo2 Platinum resets my overclock to default speed when waking up from sleep... the overclocking is done solely in bios.
I have a Winnie 3200+ running @ 2.4Ghz with 1.45V .. when waking up .. the Vcore remains the same but the clock sets itself to 2.0Ghz.
What am I doing wrong .. or it is something wrong with my board.
    Thanks in advance.

  • KM4M-V good for overclocking?

Hi, I just registered here because I'm thinking about buying this board, the KM4M-V microATX board with the VIA 8237 south bridge.
I would like to know if this is a board that I can overclock with. It will be paired with an XP2000+. I see that this board has 100/133/166 FSB options via a jumper. Can it adjust in 1mhz increments? Also, does this board have any multiplier or voltage adjustment?
    Thanks
    Benny

The KM4M is not a great choice for overclocking. The BIOS options are rather limited, and if the 2000 you plan to install is a fairly new CPU, it is likely locked on the multi. This would leave only the FSB setting for overclocking, and the VIA boards do not use a AGP/PCI lock, so increasing the FSB of the CPU also raises the AGP/PCI clock.

  • K8N Neo2: How much overclocking when using Sata-Drives ?

I understand that IDE-Drives have an advantage in achieving high FSB. Ist this in genral the case or is SATA as stabile when using them plain without RAID ?

    I have a set of RAID0 SATA's.
    On SATA1 & SATA2 I can run at a max of 201FSB
    On SATA3 & SATA4 I can run at a max of 212FSB

  • K8N Diamond Good Overclocking?

Is the K8N Diamond good for over clocking?
    I'll be over clocking a AMD 3500+

A problem occurs with NEO4's and AMD 'Winnies'
It's only a bootup issue because we can OC within windows by using 'ntune,A64 tweaker or clockgen' etc
Not everybody has this problem apparently and it may have something to do with specific ram???
I too have just found out that I have the 219fsb boot issue.
But I can OC quite well using ntune.
    I'm using a 512mb stick of pc3200 twinmos,3-4-4-8.
I've never really pushed this ram but when using the nperformance within ntune I've discovered that my ram will do 240fsb
So now I'm running at 240x4=960HTT with no memory divider
I wish ntune had the memory divider option included
I now know that I could use a ram divider and get that fsb right up there
I think that ntune can apply your OC settings once windows is booting up?But not sure as I was only doing a quick OC testing session
Many people are slating MSI for this issue and are jumping ship but so far I really like this board
Wireless/bluetooth is excellent and the onboard creative sound is good.
So far I have no issues with this board and it works flawlessly.
If a new bios fixes the 219fsb boot problems.........

  • Dead K8N Neo2-F?

I bought an MSI K8N Neo2-F for a cheap system I'm throwing together. When power is applied, I get only beeps, no output to the video card, no hard disk activity (though the HDD light is lit).  I tried swapping out the PSU to a Codegen 400W that I had laying around and it made no difference.  Any suggestions?

What kind of beeping is it?  If you haven't installed the D-Bracket, do it ... it can provide very good troubleshooting information (there should be a list of D-Bracket errors in your mobo manual that might help you troubleshoot the problem).
Unfortunately, just saying that the system beeps doesn't really tell us anything ... systems beep a lot, and for various reasons.  For example, last night I replaced my A64 3000+ with a A64 3200+ (same motherboard as you).  I turned on the power and I got this loud beeping alarm sound, scared me half to death.  I thought I installed the HSF wrong and my CPU was burning up or something, LOL.
Well, anyway I remembered seeing an option for 'Chassis Intrusion Detection' or something like that in BIOS settings, so I entered BIOS and loaded optimized defaults, and it fixed the problem.  I guess replacing the CPU made the mobo think someone sabotaged it or something

  • Few question above the k8n neo2 platinum and raid

    hi
i have for now intel 3.4ghz and asus p4c800dlux and 4 sata drives :
2x36giga wd 10000 raptors in raid 0 (connected to the on board promise sata controller)
2x200giga wd 7200 jd sata that (connected to on bard sata ports)
i order a athlon fx-55 and k8n neo2 platinum for a oc (a have 2x512 corsiar pc4000pro and hydro cool 200 ) and its look that its going to be problem
"SATA ports 1+2 will not maintain a lock and you can and will corrupt hard drives placed on these channels if you raise the HTT above 220mhz."
    http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=ge...890&articID=228
so im in a problem, if i wont to do nice oc (and i will) i need to leave sata ports 1 and 2 not connected and buy a sata-pci controller for my 2x200giga , im right ?
in that case i need to connect the raptors in raid 0 in the sata 3-4 prots (near the agp) but:
the raid on the noe2 is "NV RAID (Software)" it means that there is no a controller like promise and the cpu need to replace the controller work, so its doing a lower performance.

If you had 4 huge drives I would be more sympathetic. To me every board is a compromise, resulting in me having to abandon something I might have done previoulsy. In you case ditch the two 36gb drives, and slum it with the 200gb drives. Remember that "overclocking" is not a right. There will be many users oblivious of the SATA 1/2 overclocking problems running 4 sata drives in RAID without a problem.

  • My K8n neo2 wont overclock at all!! plz help...

Hi, I just build my new machine, and after much problems I finally have it up and running at stocks speeds just fine, the problem is that I spent a lot of money buying Top-Brand components so I could overclock a lot, (I like It) but I cant seem to go upweard of 205FSB!! anything above that and the board wont boot at all forcing me to clear the Cmos!! I find this completely unaceptable for this board, being that my last board (an Msi one with nforce2) could overclock and athlon XP 2500+ barton all the way up to a 2800+!! Im really dissapointed at this, if someone could give me a few pointers as to what tweak in the bios (Im using 1.3 right now) it will be very thankful!!  ok, my specs are below, thanks!!
    Athlon64 3500+ socket 939
    Msi k8N Neo2 Platinum with 1.3bios
    2+512mb Crucial Ballistix pc3200 cl2
    BFG Nvidia Geforce 6800Gt
    36gb Raptor Hdd
    Enermax 420W power supply
    Thanks!!!

I think your problem is your power supply. Check what that MAX amp on your 12V rail.
I have nearly the exact same setup as you do and was unable to overclock the memory without lowering the memory timings much earlier than I expected too. For me I'm able to raise my FSB up to 207 at 2-2-2 timings. The max overclock I achieved was 220 X11 at 2.5-3-3 for a speed of 2420mghz. But it was not completly stable (it would bout but would lock up while gamming).  I had expected much better results than this... I bought good memory (Ballistix pc4000) I had a good 480W power supply... my processors ceilling should be around 2.6ghz. After reading this review on Anand Tech I think I found the answer... Athlon 64 Memory: Rewriting the Rules
On page 10 they make the remark that their Antec True Power 465W power suply was limiting their ability to overclock memory.... The Antec True Power is rated to supply 22A on the 12v rail. My power supply is only rated to supply 18A.  I bet your 420W is rated even less.
After reading that I fiddled with async overclocking and was stable up to 230FSB... then my hard drive freaked out... I was using sata port 1. I moved the hard drive to SATA port 4, but haven't tried much overclocking since.  Maybe if they put out a bios revision that I can adjust the HT on I'll try again. Until them I'm settled for running at 2277mghz.

  • K8N Neo2: How to boot after bad overclock settings?

Does anyone know - is holding the <insert> key down whilst booting supposed to work on the K8N Neo2?  i.e. reset the clock speed back to safe settings?
I have a new 4800+ processor that I have been trying and it doesn't like high memory bus speeds.  I keep trying an overclock setting (in the BIOS) and then finding it won't post.  Then I have to clear the cmos and re-enter all of the bios settings from scratch again.  Its becoming a right pain in the backside, to be honest.
I thought you were supposed to be able to just hold the insert key down on power up and it should boot with safe settings?
Or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks
    Chip

The insert thing only worked for me a few times. If I recall correctly, you need to power down everything, including the PSU itself. Then, hold the insert key, power up the PSU and then hit the power button on the case...The only thing is, and I don't know if it is BIOS version related or what, it will sometimes power on when you hit the switch on the back of the PSU.
If you are messing with it that much, then I suggest using some Windows apps to OC. Get the BIOS set up with some decent OC'd settings, stable ones. Then use apps like Core Center(voltages), A64 Tweaker(memory) and Clock gen(clock speed) to work things out in Windows. Once you have some good settings going in Windows, restart and set it up in the BIOS. This way, if you set something wrong in Windows and the PC hangs or restarts on its own, it will restart with the good BIOS settings that you know will work...Then you make note of what not to do, lol, and continue on...I hope that helps a little...Good Luck.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum Ordered - Advice for a noob please

    Hi there,
this seems like a great forum, was hoping someone could give me some advice - Im trying to pre-empt any major probs....
I am a relative noob to building P.C's - done a few P4 based systems before but this will be my first Athlon based.  This systems primary use will be gaming.  I have the following on order (should be with me next week) : -
    a) MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum Edition SCK 939 Motherboad
    b) AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ 64bit SCK 939 Retail Inc Fan
    c) 160GB Maxtor Calypso 8mb Cache 7200 SATA DHH
    Components I have already
    a) Graphics Card - Nvidia 6800 GT
    b) Memory - Generic 2 X 512MB PC2700 DDR333 RAM
    c) Sound Card - Creative SB Live Value
    d) PSU - Jeantech 450W (22a on 12V Rail)
    e) Case - pretty generic full tower case - no fans attached
    f) CPU FAN - COOLERMASTER HYPER 48 SUPER SILENT HEATPIPE
    g) Spare Hard drive - 120GB Maxtor IDE Hard drive
    h) DVD Drives - 1 x Pioneeer 108 / 1 x Pioneer 104
    I) Monitors - Ilyama 17" TFT & Toshiba 32WL36P LCD
I have some 'noobish' questions - apologies for my ignorance : -
    1) Memory - Will my memory be okay ?  Should I ditch it and buy some Corsair DDR400 (which everyone else seems to have!).  Will performance suffer if I stick with the DDR 333 ? Do I need to adjust settings in BIOS regarding memory timing ? (I only picked up on this from reading through other posts on this board, and am totally clueless on 'timing'- Ive never needed to adjust timing on any previous PC's....!)
    2) Sound Card - will I be better off sticking with the onboard sound on the MSI K8N neo 2 ? Or for best performance do I go with the SB LIve ? (god its a nightmare trying to get updated drivers for this card),  Would I get a noticable performance increase buying an Audigy 2?
    3) Vcore / other power issues - Reading this forum Im kinda scared by many posts along the lines of "..for stability I need to change my memory voltage to xx-V" or "...for a stable system I needed to change my Vcore to xx-V".  Will I need to change the Bios default values on this system just to get it to run stably??
    4) CPU FAN - Are AMD stock fans any good ?  My Hyper 48 is quite highly rated....
    5) Im completely new to SATA drives, but Ive printed off the very useful install guide on this site (which I intend to use).  Is there anything I need to look out for concerning adding my IDE drive also.
I think thats about it just now - if anyone can see any other potential problems with my specs then please let me know.  Im really not trying to be negative / pessimistic - after all the reason I have went for this motherboard is that it is rated as one of the best.  Im just a bit paranoid that the dreaded B.S.O.D awaits me!
On a more positive note - does anyone have similar system specs they use for gaming ?  How well does HL2 / Doom3 / Farcry etc fly J ? I cant wait !
    Thanks for the time

Im looking for a better heatsink....any suggestions? I may oc it but for now I wont....it idles at 40-41 and stays at 60 when im gaming 58 if i turn off cool n quiet.....and thats with some ocz ultra5 Thermal compund....ThX

Yes, agree with SAB, zalman 7000 is a good one, however I´ve got 2 very simular K8N Neo2-systems but with 2 different cpu coolers.
One with zalman 7000alcu and one with Thermalright XP-90 and a zalman 92mm fan ( you can use what ever 80/92mm fan you like high speed, low speed, led colored, etc).
Both are equal regarding cooling to my experience, but I prefered the XP-90 because I did not have to remove the backplate ( I think zalman recommends mounting it´s own backplate to get the right distance/pressure between the cooler and cpu ).
With the XP-90 you just switch the retension mechanism which is easy ( even with the MoBo in the case ).
