K8N Neo2-- IRQ Sharing of Network and Video Card

With the Giga onboard network card enabled it is using the same IRQ as my MSI 6800GT video card (16).  i know that IRQ sharing is "okay" but i also know that the two devices will still have to "take turns" then.  i'd rather not have this.  i disabled my comm ports, sata1/2 ports, paralell ports, and 1394 ports.  many irq's are available.  for the time being i disabled the giga card and i'm using the nvidia card instead as that seems to use its own irq (23).  i could only find one other thread about this and the solution was to use the nvidia card.  i'd rather use the giga card unless someone knows that the nvidia is better.

No cards installed except for the video card.  I am using onboard sound and network.
IRQ 0   System timer   OK
IRQ 1   Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard   OK
IRQ 6   Standard floppy disk controller   OK
IRQ 8   System CMOS/real time clock   OK
IRQ 9   Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System   OK
IRQ 10   NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management   OK
IRQ 13   Numeric data processor   OK
IRQ 14   Primary IDE Channel   OK
IRQ 15   Secondary IDE Channel   OK
IRQ 16   NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT by www.TweaksRUs.com   OK
IRQ 21   Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller   OK
IRQ 21   Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller   OK
IRQ 22   Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller   OK
IRQ 22   Realtek AC'97 Audio   OK
IRQ 23   Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller   OK
IRQ 23   NVIDIA Network Bus Enumerator   OK
This is with the Giga card disabled.  When it is enabled it uses IRQ 16 (even with the nvidia disabled). 11, 12, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 are free.

    Stuart, welcome to the forum.
The truth is, any video card that will run properly with the 300W PSU in the computer, will not be much better than the integrated video.  Most newer mid-level cards require a PSU with a minimum of 400W watts.  I have searched for other members many times without any luck.  If you want to upgrade the PSU, it will give you far more options.

  • Found a Mac Pro in the trash, missing harddrive and video card. Can I fix?

I believe this is a Mac Pro G5 (Aluminum casing). It is missing a harddrive and video card. I want to fix it. I plugged it in and turned it on and I see a red light coming from the front, not sure if that means its broken or just missing a videocard/harddrive.
Is there a way I can tell if I will be able to fix this machine before buying parts? When i turn it on, it makes the OSX noise the same as when I turn my laptop on.
    THanks!

Can you fix it? No, I think you should mail it to me
The best way is to see if you can find a cheap video card - craigslist, ebay, borrow from someone else local to you (computer club or users group?)
As for hard drives, since you can boot of an external firewire drive - you have lots of options.
The video card is obviously your biggest issue. Since you apparently get the "Welcome to Mac" startup chime it doesn't sound like their is a major issue with it.
Now, even if you get it working, what are you going to do with it? The G5 was good for it's day, but for the amount of electricity it consumes, it's not the best out there - the new Mini is probably faster than it and consumes a fraction of the power.
Then again, you got it for free and can probably get a video card for under $100 - cheaper than a Mini and if you live in cold climate the extra heat it generates could be a net positive

  • G4 Sawtooth Processor and Video Card upgrades

    Hi there,
I'm heading for a major upgrade on my G4 Sawtooth 500Hz, starting with processor and Video card, not to mention maxing out the RAM slots.
My main applications are Final Cut, After Effects and Photoshop.
I wish I had more money for a dual processor (or even a G5 – sigh!) so I'm looking at the Sonnet Encore/ST G4/1.4GHz Processor versus the PowerLogix G4/1.4GHz 7455A PowerForce55. I've done the benchmark tests at OWC's site and I'm inclined to Sonnet. Anyone have an opinion between these 2, or even if there's another one I should be also considering?
Should I make the effort and go for a dual processor? because of the clear benefits on rendering time (specially for After Effects)?
    Video Cards:
These I think I need more help. Going thru these threads I learned that I should consider the power supply (overheating problems) and that "AGP G4's have either a 208w or a 237w Power supply (PSU)" - I have no idea what I got.
On another thread I read: "as far as I'm aware, there are only two video cards currently available retail that support Tiger's core image/video, the Radeon 9600 and 9800. Unfortunately the 9600 requires a x4 AGP slot, so that just leaves the 9800. It's a powerful card but consequently is fairly expensive and can be noisy due to it's fan."
What is a x4 AGP slot? Do Sawtooths have this?
I'll be upgrading to Tiger soon. Does this mean I can't go for the ATI Radeon 9200?
I'd prefer AGP than PCI cards. What are my real options considering power consumption, OS and performance?
Important: I’d like the video card to run 2 monitors, LCD and/or CRT.
Further upgrades would be SATA controller card and one or two internal SATA drives replacing the ones I got.
    Last but not least:
Instead of all this fuss, should I 'just' get the MacMini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo????? and later on get a G5 (or whatever it will be called...)?
    PowerMac G4 "Sawtooth" (AGP) 500Mhz, ATI Rage 128Pro, 512MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Internal ATA drives [25GB - 80GB] / External 160GB

I think I may have written what you've quoted. You probably already know, but you don't actually need a Core Image compatible card to use Tiger. As far as I'm aware, few applications currently make use of Core Image and fewer still actually require it (Apple's Aperture and Motion being possible exceptions).
As PB PM mentions, you have a x2 AGP slot and unfortunately there's little middle ground in terms of graphics cards available. The main options are the Radeon 9800 at one end (powerful but relatively expensive, power hungry, hot running and noisy) or perhaps the Radeon 9000 at the other. It's no longer available retail but they appear on eBay occasionally. It's an AGP card, was available in 64MB and 128MB versions and can support two monitors. One slight downside is that it has an ADC connector (alongside the VGA connector), which the Sawtooth logic board doesn't support, but I believe you can still connect an ADC to DVI adapter cable to connect a DVI monitor. It doesn't support Core Image either.

  • K8N Neo2 problems running 300MHz HTT and higher than "100MHz" RAM divider

    Hi!
Got some problems with my K8N Neo2 when running the HTT much above 300MHz, only RAM divider that's stable is "100MHz" which means the RAM runs at the half speed of HTT. That's not good since my RAM does 270MHz with "200MHz"/1:1 divider.
This is not a problem when I run my FX-55, but when I was going to overclock my 3000+ Winchester where the highest MP is 9 this is a big problem. It does 3004MHz (9x334MHz) stable with Prime95 and runs Super Pi at 3135MHz (9x348MHz), but with only 174MHz (348MHz/2) on my RAM the performance is bad. CPU is cooled by Prometeia Mach II.
I'm running HT Frequency/LDT of 3x, any of the settings under 3x doesn't work right (looks like 2,5x equals 3x and 2x, 1,5x and 1x equals 4x). Any BIOSes where the HT Frequency settings below 3x works right?
Thanks for any inputs on this subject.

Why are you insistent on running your frequency at 300Mhz and higher?  Why not lower the frequency and increase the multiplier?  For example, you could run 275Mhz x 11 for a CPU frequency of 3025Mhz.  Then you could still run your RAM at the 1:1 ratio.....
Just a thought -- curious why you haven't tried that...

  • K8n Neo2 Plat Sata Raid 0 and IDE drive - Board won't detect IDE

I have my K8n Neo2 Platinum board configured just fine for 2 WD raptor sata drives in raid 0.  However, I need to add more space so I went out and got a Seagate 180gb IDE drive.  I plug it into the primary IDE slot and the board won't detect the new hard drive.  I have 2 DVD-ROM drives working fine in the Secondary IDE slot.  Why won't the K8n detect what is plugged into the primary IDE slot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Jeff

    Okay...
First, remove both of your DVD Drives and try connecting the new HD to the Secondary IDE Interface as master.  Use 'cable-select'.  If the drive then works, leave everything set to cable-select, and try installing the HD as master, and one DVD drive as slave, on the primary channel.   Next, set the other DVD drive to cable select, and install it on the secondary interface as a slave.
If the drive is still not detected after removing both DVD Drives, then try installing the DVD Drives onto the primary interface.  If they work, then you've most likely got a bad HDD.  If they don't...  your mainboard may be bad.

  • Bios issues with k8n neo2, turn of memory test, and dmi pool data

    Hey guys.
I recently flashed my bios to the 1.9's for the K8n neo2 running in my main machine.
Everything went ok for the most part, though i had some issues with boot record, and boot.cfg file.  That stuff is all worked out now.
However, with this bios, I constantly get the extended memory test, on my 2 gigs of ram.  The old bios i had, 1.4's, didnt do that.  Is there an option to turn that off?  I cant seem to find it any where?
My 2nd question is this, after this bios upgrade, my verifying dmi pool data takes longer then it used to, if it even did it before, im not sure, because my boot sequence was much faster.
How can I get rid of the "verifying dmi pool data" or speed it up?
    Thanks guys

Tried to used the Bios 1c by Syar's. His bios is nice and easy. Maybe bould solve your problem.BTW do used liveupdate to flashed your Bios or is it manual? Stay away from using liveupdate as it causing a lot problems. Manual is the best way. Refer to my sig for the manual flashing. Here's the location of the files for the Bios 1C. Gd luck.

  • K8N Neo4-F and video card

    Will an 8800 GTS 320 video card fit on a K8N Neo4-F?

    Quote from: jose_ramos on 13-May-07, 02:56:39
    Hi Grayone, thanks.
Now just to make sure, the following question is: won't it go over/hit the NB chipset cooler?
And, suplementing that, some people are using Fanmate 2 to reduce speed/noise of stock MSI Neo4-F NB fan. Do you know if it works without harm to mobo? To what rpm could I reduce the speed - the lowest Fanmate allows is OK?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jose
The card will fit over MSI's stock chipset cooler , no problem.
I would not turn the fanspeed down. Nforce chipsets run hot, and the fan is actually the only cooling there is for the chipset as the 'heatsink' itself is tiny.

  • Hard Drives and video card for new CS5 system

I've read through much of the threads in the hardware forums and find I still have questions.  I am just beginning to learn how to edit and it is not a source of income for me at the moment.  My sources will be from tapes from my Canon HV20 and at some point either a Panasonic GH2, Canon 60D or similar.
    I have bought the following:
    ASUS P6X58D-E motherboard
    24 GB of Patriot Sector 7 DDR3 1333MHz memory (9-9-9-24)
    Intel i7-950 3.06 GHz CPU
I plan to use Cineform NEO or maybe NEO HD to ingest my files.
    I also have 4 Seagate 750GB 7200.11 hard drives I can use.
It seems like the best bang for the buck for a video card is a GTS 450 at about $100 because I can't find any data that indicates a GTX 460 or a GTX 570 would make any difference (see http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm)
As far as hard drives goes, Harm's article on creating separate storage makes sense to me.  It seems like I could create a "4 drive" system quite easily (see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/662972).  Given that I am not ready to spend moeny on an Areca card until I can develop my skills,  I am wondering if I should get one of the new WD Velociraptor 600GB (SATA 6) drives as my system drive for about $280, a 150 GB (SATA 3) Velociraptor drive for about $100, or some other fast drive.
Given that my motherboard can support RAID, should I consider RAIDing the "D" drive or the "E and F" drives?
Is there any value to using an SSD drive for the "E" drive (page file and media cache) [see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/662972]?  Microcenter has a 64GB drive for $100.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Harm,
First let me say, I didn't mean to exclude Bill Gehrke.  I just didn't know what was what.  Thank you for explaining that to me.  Let me also say the you and Bill have a great site.
I have a question for you,  in the tests I have run with my systems, I am not seeing any speed difference between the 450 and 480.  Now granted, they are AMD processors and I know they don't have the SSE 4.1+. Here are my systems that I ran the tests on:
An AMD X4 Quad Core computer running at 2.9 Ghz with 12 gigs of RAM and a single Samsung 7200 rpm SATA 3.0Gb/s hard drive
An AMD X6 Six Core computer running at 3.2 Ghz with 12 gigs of RAM and a single Samsung 7200 rpm SATA 3.0Gb/s hard drive
Both computers were running the same version of the NVidia driver and all non-essential programs were disabled.
When I test the 450 and the 480 in the AMD X4 system, they are turning in pretty much the same level of performance, in that system.
The same holds true with the AMD X6, the 450 and 480 turn in virtually the same level of performance, in this system.
The AMD X6 with either the 450 or 480 does turn in a better performance over the AMD X4 with either video card.
The question.... Are you seeing result that are like this?  Where using the exact same computer, turns in the same results with different video cards.
From the number of emails I get about the article, other have reported this to me also.  I have had a few people who said when they did see a minor speed increase when they did switch between a 450 and a 480 and a couple who did see a good speed increase.
I am working on changing the article to reflect this and would really appreciate your input or Bills input on this.
I have looked at your benchmark chart and read through the result, but one thing that concerns me when reading some of the results is what programs do they have running in background, if any.  And how is that effecting their performance.  That is why I used the two systems I listed above to do the tests with.  It gives me a controlled enviroment to do test the performance of the video cards in.
As a side note, when I tested the 450 and 480 cards in a friends Intel I7 system, again we didn't see any performance difference between the two video cards, but he did have some programs running in background which may have caused the perfornce results I got.
    Best Regards
    David Knarr

  • Cintiqs, Monitors, and Video card problems.

    Hi all,
Alright so first of all. I have a 2008 MacPro 3,1 QuadCore.
I'm an animator so I have a duel monitor setup. They're both pretty crappy but run really nicely with my graphics card. I currently have just one ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB video card. It has three outputs, two mini display ports and one DVI-I port. So I always have an extra output.
Alright now that I've set the scene, one MacPro, two monitors. Enter one Cintiq. I finally pulled the trigger on getting a Cintiq. I know! Its awesome, I love it.
It works great I couldn't ask more from the machine.
Just one problem. Even though I have three video outputs, I'm not able to connect all three (2 monitors 1 cinitq) all at once. Its super annoying to have to swith out the cords everytime I want to do anything with the cintiq. I've had 3 monitors plugged in at the same time so I know its not a faulty card.
I would love to be able to have my cinitq and the other 2 monitors all running at once. From what I've read online it looks like I'll have to get a second graphics card that I can connect the cintiq into.
Any recomendations on a new card? is there any way I can avoid paying the extra $150 for a new one?
Another thought on that. Is it even possible to connect two different types of video cards into the same machine? I'm assuming its just by brand so the drivers don't get mixed up?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Dann

No need for a different video card, just some different plumbing.
In order to get all three ports going, you need active adapters on the mini display ports. The Apple part most of us have is passive.
I was having the same problem you discribe except my "CinTiq" was a HD color grading monitor for my post-production work. I got a pair of these:  Accell B087B-006B UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Single-Link Active Adapter ATI Certified (Black) and my problems were over.
Your CinTiq may have additional requirements, so check it all out, but I think this'll get the job done.
    good luck

  • Which computer screen and video card are best for editing photo's with CS6?

I edit my photos with Photoshop CS6, and want to buy a new windows computer and screen. What are good screens and do I also have to purchase a special video card? Greetings, Wil.
    [ email signature removed - see http://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-3731 ]

I'm personally fond of a new Dell Ultrasharp U3014 monitor I got several months ago.  I have a video card a couple of years old - an ATI Radeon HD 7850 with 2GB VRAM, and it drives the big 30" monitor as well as my two older 20" monitors turned up sideways perfectly, to make a Photoshop editing station that's potent.  All the various Photoshop panels are on the sides, and the entire central monitor is available for the actual editing.
As far as computers go, I've yet to find a machine better for Photoshop work than a Dell Precision Workstation.  Others will of course have their own opinions.
It's possible to find off-lease workstations, such as the Precision T5500 system shown above, being sold used on eBay by refurbishers.  Depending on who you choose you might even get a Dell warranty (I did).  Their newer T5600 line is current, which makes the just off cutting edge systems cheaper.  You can score a good deal this way, but you need to educate yourself very well on the options before choosing a model with particular set of features.  Another member on here (JJMack) got a good deal on a Precision T5600 refurbed from Dell direct.  I hope he chimes in and describes his experience with his T5600.
    Some things to think about:
SSD storage is greatly preferable over HDD storage, and is well worth the additional cost.  Do not skimp here.  Get more than you need.  Consider building a RAID array of them.
More RAM is better, and much more is much better.
A good balance between individual core speed and core count is needed.  Too much of one and not enough of the other isn't as good.
If you want multiple monitors, a single modern video card that can drive multiple monitors is essential; don't try to run Photoshop with multiple video cards.

  • Having problems with RT and video card?

I have just upgraded to FCP 5 Studio. I found that my video card was not able to handle the RT Extreme, so I upgraded to a recommended ATI 9600 64 mb video card. However I still do not get any video that plays in the viewer windows. I only get a pixelated screen of the menu bar. I am running two monitors. The second monitor is only 32 mb,but I only use it for the menus part of the program. Do both video cards need to have enough memory to run the video RT? If so, can I unplug the monitor that does not have enough memory and run the program properly? Can I turn off the RT feature? Thanks for your help.

This is the Final Cut Express forum. You should post your question in the Final Cut Pro forum and/or the PowerMac forum.
wrt RT settings in FCE, you can adjust them in FCE System Settings > Playback Control

  • X-FI Fatality and Video card prob

I bought a X-FI Fatality sound card and when I put it on the PC then when I play World Of Warcraft the frames of the game going down to 3 when the normal is 40 or 50 fps and my friend has 80 fps(I have the N-Vidia G-Force 6600 GT 28 Mb DDR-3). I formatted my Pc and reinstall win xp pro sp2 but I have the same problem. Now am I going to buy a new card or what?I bought this video card before 3 months. If I know that it will happen this I should buy a better video card with more memory. Is there anyone that have the same problem?

interestingly too if I switch the input on my amp to 'Optical' so that the feed coming from the sound card is using the Optical cable...when I run the THX Speaker test the rear speakers come out of the front speakers. Switching the amp back to 6 channel audio and using the normal 3 coloured cables (excuse my ignorance - no idea what these are called) there is no sound at all when pressing on either of the rear speakers. If that helps anymore. Thanks.Message Edited by chump on 04-9-200708:56 PM
