K8n neo2 no post after bios flash

I have a K8n Neo2 Platinum that I recently flashed with beta 1.52 bios.  I was trying to see if the beta bios would fix some problems I was having.  After I rebooted it would not post.  I cant even get into bios, let alone re-flash it.  I tried resetting the cmos, but nothing happened.  This is what happens:
I turn on the computer
My fans and led's light up
2 or 3 seconds later it turns off
My D-Bracket 2 shows green in #2 and green in #3, which, according to my manual means Processor Initialization.
My question is whether flashing my bios could have fried my CPU???  I ordered a new bios chip and will replace my chip with the new one, but this message from my d-bracket is scaring me!!  Any help would be appreciated.

hi  gabrielloewen ,
I'd try unplugging everything but the minimum, CPU, Grfx Card & 1 memory Module.
carefully follow Clear CMOS with jumper JBAT1 Make sure you leave the jumper on discharge for as long as specified, it's easy when your worried to do it to quickly. The continuous beeping is normal with memory removed. see Award Bios Beep codes in Main Menu - No Post/No Boot problems and fixes
If that works add back your drives etc.,
If that brings no success & you find no other solution you won't lose but may gain by following  5-2) Clear CMOS settings by removing battery in the last link leave the battery out overnight, & try again tomorrow (Minimum parts again.)

  • Neo2 not booting after BIOS flash

    Darn - after upgrading to v1.3 BIOS, my Neo2 FIS2R won't boot.
I got a brand new set of components - new CPU, Neo2 FIS2R, and 1GB of Kingston HyperX PC3200 memory (22261T).  I put everything in my system (Antec case, 400W P/S) and it booted fine with the v1.0 BIOS and I was able to install WinXP to my new 120GB SATA drive and my ATI9700Pro.  Great - I know all my components work.
I install LiveBios and it shows me that v1.3 is out and enables MAT and DOT - the two features I bought the mobo for.  So I download the latest via LiveBios, build the floppy (my system uses NTFS to boot) and reboot.
The BIOS flash process goes smoothly and I wait all the way to the end.  I shut off the system and reboot - nothing, just a blank screen.  So I shut it off, clear CMOS, and reboot again - still nothing.  I try several more times, still nothing.  However, recovery mode works so I reflash 1.3 a couple times to see if that will help, but it does not.
Finally, I build a floppy with v1.2 BIOS as the recovery BIOS and use recovery mode to load that.  Still no go.
It is at this point that I discover and plug in those diags LEDs (I was using the onboard USB header to bring the USB ports to the front of the case) and find that it is stopping almost immediately at the 'early chipset identification' phase.  Ouch.  Oh, and at this point the BIOS recovery mode no longer works.  Ouch.
Any thoughts?  At this point I got an RMA number from the vendor and I'm thinking I'm just sending it back.

Unfortunately I can't even get to that phase - the system won't show the post splash screen or post at all.  It just sits there blank (I know I wasn't clear on where the boot process was stopping - it doesn't even allow me to enter rom-based setup.)
So I'd love to set vdimm to something else, but I can't.

  • System does not post after Bios Flash

After using Live Update to flash my Bios to the new version, the computer does not POST. The Bios Flash was successful - it rebooted and started normally. When I tried to restart it the normal way, it will not boot. The fans run when the "power on" button is pressed but nothing more. I cleared the CMOS using the jumpers but the problem was not solved. Can any one help?
Can some good Samaritan give me a step by step method to resolve this problem?

I followed the link you provided and managed to resolved it:
    1) Removed one memory stick and floppy;
    2) Cleared CMOS and rebooted successfully;
    3) Inserted floppy and reverted to the previous BIOS;
    4) Inserted the other memory stick and brought system back to full power again.
Thank you very much for your assistance. I am sure MSI is aware of the problem and will take steps to rectify it ASAP

  • Neo Platinum, No POST after Bios flash to v1.9

Ive got a K8n neo platinum board, and my system has been runnin fine for months now, but today after i updated my Bios to 1.9 using the msi updater tool my system wont post. The D-bracket2 has the following pattern
    RED     OFF
    Green   OFF
2 of the lights are off? and there isnt a code for this in the manual. Also, just as the bracket light sequence haults, there is a flash from the light near the ethernet port on the mobo? If the Bios is wrecked what are the steps that need to be taken? is there any way to fix at home or does it need to be sent to a factory?
    Many thanks.

I'd say it's time to flash it using the bootdisk method

  • K9NU Neo no post after bios flash

    Hello all
    processor Athlon64X2 4200+
I had flashed the bios with the liveupdate in a Windows XP session to update v1.7 to 1.9.
On reboot, no post: nothing on the screen, just the 3 keyboard leds flashing 1 seconde. No beep.
I have tried to clear bios setup with jumper JBAT1 : nothing.
I downloaded the bios v1.7, putted it on a floppy disk, rename it AMIBOOT.ROM, powered up my computer with CTRL HOME down : the floppy had reading for about 20 secondes; when stop reading, nothing: no beep, just the keyboard leds flashing.
I had tried with 2 different floppies, several times: nothing. I have tried a boot disk : it has reading for 5 secondes, beep 4 times, reading 5 seconde, beep 4 times, ... in loop.
Is my motherboard dead ? Help me please

Now you see why we don't recommend using Live Update in Windows to flash the BIOS! Were any errors reported during the flash procedure?
Yes I see; but I had read nothing about when i started the liveupdate in Windows: I'm french and i understand sometimes wrong.
But I don't understand why I can't restore a bios with the floppy. If I will must change my motherboard, it will be no a MSI.

  • Cool and Quiet problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum v1.3 bios

    Hello
I have a problem with the Cool and Quiet feature on the K8N Neo2 Platinum (v1.3 bios).
As soon and I boot the Core Center v1.7.0.0 will instantly overclock my A64 3500+ CPU to 3000+ Mhz.  Of course this reboots my PC.
I have Cool and Quiet enabled in the bios, Automatic overclocking disabled in the bios and the Core Center softwares overclocking is (well it was) disabled?  How can I install it or get it to stop overclocking the system.
I want to run the Core Center to enable the Cool and Quiet fan controlling stuff.
    Thanks

Strange that Corecenter would overclock your cpu to 3ghz. It's known to be unreliable software, but not that unreliable.
Are you running a stock 3500+, or are you overclocking the HTT/FSB beyond 200?
Previous posted was right about cool and quiet software. You don't need corecenter to run it. Just stay away from corecenter and even uninstall it
Cool and quiet software (a device driver that you download from AMD, or that comes pre-installed with XP SP2) simply works as follows. It introduces the notion of several p-states (processor states) that it switches between based on its reading of cpu load. A p-state is a pairing of cpu voltage and cpu multiplier.  On my 3200+ newcastle, the p-states are:
    1.5V, 11x
    1.4V, 10x
    1.3V, 9x
    1.1V, 5x
Your 3500+ might be similar. Anyway, just run cpu-z instead of corecenter to watch your cpu speed changing on the fly.
As far as fan speeds go: the cool and quiet driver doesn't affect fan speeds.  That means to get the "quiet" part of "cool and quiet" you need either
    (a) a fan that has a temperature sensor and which automatically changes its speed based on that, or
    (b) just use the motherboard BIOS setting to do the same via bios software.
    (c) use speedfan to do the same via windows software.
I myself prefer (b) but it depends on the bios accurately reporting temperature, which can vary wildly between bios releases (e.g. newcastles didn't start getting accurate temp reports until bios 1.4).

  • Can't Enable XMP after BIOS flash to V1.4 on P55-GD85

I didn't put this in the BIOS section because while the BIOS is involved,  I don't think it's necessarily a BIOS issue.  However, if it should go there please move it.
While not new to computers by any stretch I committed the cardinal sin of updating my BIOS when I didn't absolutely have to.  While their were some issues I'd hoped would be fixed with a new BIOS revision, they weren't critical.
I have a i7 860 Lynnfield system running Win 7 Home Premium 64 with a MSI P55-GD85 mobo which has been running fine since being built in March of this year.  This was the first BIOS flash since I've built the system.  The system came with either V1.0 or V1.1 (I think it was V1.1).  I checked using Live Update (yes, I now know this is bad) and found there had been several udpates since my current version.  I went ahead and used Live Update to flash the BIOS (yes, I know...not a good idea).   Contrary to the horror stories the flash itself went fine.  I watched it flash the BIOS and everything verified fine.  Of course  after the update I had to reset my BIOS settings to get the system to run which went fine.  The problem is that the one thing I can't do is enable the XMP option for the memory without the system crashing.  If I enable this option the system will POST and then do a memory dump before ever getting to the desktop.  Without turning this option on I can't take full advantage of my RAM.  I am running G.SKILL Trident 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) which are XMP compliant and ran without issue up until the BIOS update.  It is possible that there is some other setting that I didn't reset after the BIOS change to allow this to work that I am missing.  I know I did a bunch of tweaking and changing of settings trying to get things to run correctly when I first built the system.  I've gone over and over the BIOS and can't find anything else to try to get me to allow to enable the XMP option without crashing.  By simply enabling that option my system would normally run stable at about 3.6-3.7GHz.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be happening or what I can do about it?  About the only other thing I can think of is to reflash the BIOS back to a previous version to see if that helps.  I am sure there is something I am missing as there is no reason the BIOS shouldn't allow the XMP feature to be enabled without crashing.  Any help would be most appreciated.  Thanks.

Have you try to increase your RAM voltage to 1.55v ~1.6v?

  • KT4AV MSI-6712 Dead after BIOS Flash to support XP3000 CPU (Photos)

Hello, I'm a 15-year veteran system administrator and hardware hacker and this is the first time I have ever had what appears to be a truly DEAD mobo killed after a BIOS flash!
Of course I read all the stickies and spent 2 hours research & homework first, before posting here.  I tried everything to revive this mobo.
    Here's what happened:
MSI-6712 KT4AV system with onboard Audio and Ethernet, Athlon 2800+ CPU, 1GB (2 x 512MB PC2700 DDR) RAM.  300W PSU.  It's been running great for years with never an issue.  I just got a Athlon 3000+ CPU I wanted to upgrade, but before I did I decided I had better upgrade the BIOS to support this newer CPU, since the BIOS Version History says the later revisions handle the 3000 CPU.
I upgraded the BIOS from DOS Boot via a Bootable USB and it Verified successfully.  Then I rebooted and it said something like Invalid CMOS settings, so I entered BIOS Setup to view my new BIOS.  I noticed new features like Network Boot ability, so the new BIOS seemed to be a success.  (Note this was a soft-reboot, not a hard power-off reboot).  I set my normal settings and saved to reboot and the system was DEAD from that point on!  No beeps, monitor stays black.  CPU fan does run but that's it.
    Here is what I have:
(This image is larger if you view it directly)
    Things I have tried:
Removing all RAM and vacuuming dust, reseating 1 stick nearest the CPU.  (This shouldnt be necessary since I have not removed the ram or disturbed it, but I tried anyway since D-Bracket LED indicates a Memory error.)
Trying a different brand PC2700 DDR RAM stick.
Removing CMOS battery for 10 minutes.
Jumpering Clear CMOS a dozen times.  Leaving Clear CMOS jumper overnight (desperate!).
Disconnected all devices from mobo, all HDs, even the AGP video card.
Unfortunately, since the mobo fails so early, it never beeps or initializes the keyboard, so safe-mode INS or CTRL-HOME don't work... so I can't reload my old BIOS backup I carefully saved before I flashed the new one.
As you can see the BIOS chip is soldered directly to the mobo.... so am I 100% dead here?  Is there anything I can do?
I am 100% positive I did this BIOS update correctly and there is no reason it should have killed the mobo!

UPDATE: Oh boy, it looks like I may have flashed the WRONG BIOS???!?!
Too possible, that's why i ask
    Quote
I'm not sure what my old bios version was, I couldn't find any way to tell?  The BIOS flash utility did not display my old version anywhere either.
Well you told that you have created BIOS backup before update the BIOS, ==> "so I can't reload my old BIOS backup I carefully saved before I flashed the new one."
Can you upload it somewhere to check it?

I now see that I should have instead flashed BIOS v5.4 for KT4AV: http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=552
I am shocked at this mistake...  Can such a small discrepency (KT4V-L vs KT4AV) really kill my motherboard?  I saw the KT4V-L and thought it was right because my mobo has Onboard LAN...
    I'm doomed!

  • Cant boot pc after Bios Flash

I finally got my K7N2 mobo working so i decided to flash the bios to get rid of those faulty temps. the flas was sucessful and it restarted but now it wont boot up ive tryed everything i can think of and still nothing any ideas?

    Kagato,
I have the K7N2, flashed the bios to the latest the other day looking for the temp detection fix. And basically mine did the same thing and I believe it is some sort of weird ram problem. It took a good 3 hrs to get mine to boot after the flash, although, I have to say i think it was booting some of the times, just no video signal. Then sometimes when I hit the power button, it would seem to get power for a split second then none. Eventually, after many attempts, (finally got it going by hitting the reset button until it booted with video signal) it booted and the temp had dropped 20 C!!! The machine ran fine but just try to reboot it, lol. I was running 512mb of generic 333 ddr (single stick), last night I added a second stick to the second channel and presto, boots fine! Weird problems! Also, with the single stick in, I had to run the ram by spd, after adding the second stick, I cranked the ram settings up in the cmos and it works great.
I will also mention that I run a 2100+ in it @ 2700+ by setting the fsb to 166 and the vcore to 1.625.
    Good Luck, Brewer

    Hey
Got a bit of a problem now after a bios flash on my P67 GD80
Been having some stange problems with the system not booting with multi over x50. Tried a newer bios didn't work then with a older bios just to see if there was a diference.
And sure there was a diference beacause now it shows the 98 post error all the time.
    Same problem as this guy.

I know that this board has dual bios and it can swith between the two if one of them goes wrong. It have done that before then i was benching but now i can't get it to work...
Is my board just a paper weight now or is there something i can try to get it to switch to number 2 bios?

Is the BIOS blue LED blinking or solid? If no BIOS LED at all, then there is hope. Try & force to POST from the secondary by removing all the RAM except for a stick in the primary blue dimm slot. With power cord removed from the PSU, remove the battery for ahwile, clear CMOS, & test. If you had the Auto BIOS Update enabled before the failure, it should flash the primary. If not enabled, first thing if you can get in to BIOS is to enable Auto Update, shut down & restart & hope for the best.

  • Funny EA game performance after BIOS flash.

    MSI K8N Neo Platinum 250gb
So, I flashed my bios to the newest version a few weeks ago.  And, then tried out some games.  Every game ran fine, until I booted up Fifa and NHL 2005.  Both games run very slow.  Not choppy, just, slow mo like.  Voices and other sounds are normal.  The clocks run at correct speeds and everything.  Just the game play is very slow.  Like there is a slow mo mode, only there isn't.
I checked board settings and nothing seems unusual.  Tried various game settings, nothing changes.  And before rolling back to a previous bios, I am wondering if any of you have an idea of what happened.  Only EA sports games run slow as far as I have tested.
Other games that run fine are:
    Doom 3
    Far Cry
    Deus Ex 2
    Warhammer 40k Dawn of War
    and many more.
As a post script, I am not sure on how to safely roll back to a previous bios version.  Could someone give me some directions?
    Cheers,
    Hamwich.

Also my Thrustmaster Dual Power 3 gamepad isn't recognized on reboot (as is sometimes my USB mouse). I have to unplug and replug it to be able to use it.....
I really am disappointed in MSI with this board!! Since I bought this board I had nothing but problems: bad compatible memory (no auto-timings), bad temperature readings, no compatibility with a Apacer 3,5" multi mem-card hub, C'nQ messing up EA games, bad USB control on the board, Punkbuster lock-up issues... it goes on and on! And although not all problems are purely caused by the Neo Platinum board, nVidia is to blame too with there bad performing nForce3250GB drvs. The fact that this board isn't a solid base for a stable doesn't help at all! It has been a really bad investment!   (This is NOT a flame, but pure statement of the facts!)
So I hope that MSI will resolve the known issues with a new BIOS version and nVidia will learn how to programm decent drivers for their nForce250GB chipset....
Im going to have to disagree with you, this board has been great for me, at first when i had a different videocard it was giving me problems then got a ATI X800pro its been running excellent and stable ever since. Only thing right now is Call of Duty: United Offensive freezes every 4 or 5 minutes in Punkbuster. Other than that, perfect.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum 1.9 Bios & Dual Core Procs?

Just curious and I hope some can answer this question for me. I just sold my trusty K8N Neo2 Platinum to a lucky m8 on eBay. It is sporting the bios revision 1.9 I know that he is going to be running a dual core proc, but I am unsure if he has a single core proc handy to get it up and running so he can flash to one of the latest bioses that supports dual core procs. If he doesn't have a single core proc to get started, will the board at least crank up with a dual core proc so he can get the bios flashed to BIOS Rev. 1.B? Geesh I do hope so because I am leaving town for 10 days on Thursday and will have no time to gut my new setup to reinstall the board and flash it for him. Here is hoping for some good news.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat power and bios question

    I have a K8N Neo2 Plat. I use a UltraProducts 500W xconnect PSU and a BFG 6800 GT OC.
A couple weeks ago the 6800 died. I contacted BFG and they sent me a new one.
The new one died the same way after a week. They said to check the power levels on the +12 rail.
In windows using softare tests it reports 13.58
in the bios it reports 12.22
both are over the allowed variance.
Ultra products told me to check with my motherboard manufacturer to see if there was a BIOS setting that would let me set the power on the +12V rail. Is that possible?
Is that something my K8N Neo2 Plat can do?

No, you cannot lower the 12V-rail by a bios setting. I really don't see what they mean by that.
Your motherboard does, however, regulate the power that comes from the power supply. Within certain margins it can lower the voltage and keep it steady. Your videocard can do the same. Now, depending on the tolerance (quality) of your hardware, you can vary on those margins. But on any piece of hardware, there is a point on which it cannot correct/lower a voltage that is too high. It then simply shuts down or dies.
To my opinion, the PSU-maker gave you a very funny piece of advice. What he actually says is that their psu may give too high a voltage (I talk about the 13+ now), but your hardware should correct this. That's not the way it works: they should make psu's that give 12V where it should. So, I'd demand a replacement. But, before you do: use a multimeter to measure the 12V-rail. You cannot trust the board's measurement too well.
But then, like Stick  says, I think that 12.22 is within mentioned margins. 13.58V is too high. So, that's why you should first measure using a multimeter. Measure for a longer time. System idle, system full load. Write everything down and see how steady this psu is. If 12V dances arround, replace it.
