K8N Neo2 + OCZ 3700EB = hit the wall at 221 MHz ???

Ok so here's the Problem:
I can run my memory memtest stable at 3-2-2-10-1T@[email protected], but as soon as I try to run it at >221MHz at any latency in Windows XP it doesn't even complete SuperPi 1M.
I disabled all Aggressive Timing, Overclocking, Spread Spectrum etc options, HTT Multi is at 3x, AGP at 67, 1T/2T at Auto, etc. SATA drives are at Port 3&4. I tried Win XP SP2 and without SP. Tried all Bios Versions (including beta). There is a fan blowing directly on the ram and booster. And the PSU has more than enough amps.
As I read something on this problem already somewhere else, but no solution, i thought maybe here anyone knows something.
My rig:
Athlon 64 3500+ on Air (Cooler Master Hyper 6)
MSI K8N Neo2
OCZ 3700EB 2x512MB + OCZ DDR Booster
Geforce 2MX (soon 6800Ultra, when these are available again in Germany)
Hitachi SATA 2x160GB
OCZ Powerstream 520W PSU
Cooler Master Stacker Case

I would first try a psu with 30+ amps on the 12V line. I think that could really help you as you already singled out cpu or psu as the trouble maker. Also your 6800GT could be really power hungry. Btw how high cpu oc do you get with mem divider?
I already tried to go with an ide drive, doesn't make a difference. Now I'm running the Corsair 3200XL (but have only 1x512MB, so no dual channel). Seems to be stable at [email protected] So this means either my EB is crap or the combination of mobo + EB is unstable.
If this is confirmed with further testing I might try to RMA the EB for some 3200 Plat. Rev2 or just buy the new G.SKill DDR560 (They don't have a reseller in europe, so they ship it directly from Taiwan for only 260$ + 5$ shipping (2x512). I think, thats a real good deal here in Europe where you normally pay 320$+ for decent mem).
Hmm, 9x235 seems ok with the Corsair, now I will ty 240.

    Tried each of the new 512MB DIMMs individually.
    But this has not helped and OCZ have no more suggestions other than to ensure that I have the latest BIOS, Which I think Id do.

    what is your RAM which you are trying to run? is it OCZ4001024ELDCPE-K 2 x 512MB matched pair?
    ensure you have used mainboard DIMM slots: DIMM1 & DIMM2
    where DIMM1 is the 1st DIMM slot close to CPU socket.
    have you tested each of memory sticks individually using DIMM1 slot? if yes what are the results?
    remove power cord from the PSU and Clear CMOS
    re-try to boot.
    you can setup memory vcore manually from BIOS to 2.75V and Command Rate to T2 (all memory timings leave it to Auto) and re-test.
    get a copy of Memtest86 and ensure no errors will comes during testing.

  • K8N Neo2: Another problem with the BIOS 1.9

    I flashed my K8N Neo2 with the BIOS 1.9, I lost the MAC address of the NVIDIA NIC. I fixed the problem reflashing the BIOS with the /nvmac:XXXXXXXXXXXX /wb options. Loaded the default settings and set the boot priority, the new BIOS is unable to boot from my Adaptec 19160 SCSI controller: it try always to boot to the NVIDIA NIC. It seems that the NVIDIA NIC has a higher boot priority than other external boot devices and it's impossible to change it.
    The settings are:
    First boot divice: Floppy
    Secind boot device: Hard-Disk
    Third boot device: CD-Rom
    Hard disk boot priority:
    1. Adaptec SCSI
    2. NV RAID
    3. Other boot device
    I reflashed the BIOS with the old 1.8 and now the system works well ...

  • Acer Mini Is About To Hit The Wall - Connection Issues

    Hi All,
    A couple of days ago I installed and set up my new airport extreme to replace my old Belkin wireless network. I hooked up the airport extreme with my new iMac and set up a new wireless network, I then got my Dell laptop connected too without any problems.
    But...... There is always a but!
    My wife has an Acer mini which connected fine to the old Belkin wireless router, but it just wont do the same with the airport extreme. It can see the network and even connects to it without any real issues, but it refuses to browse the web!
    "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" errors all over the screen, I even tried Firefox, but had the same issues.
    I have tried a few of the windows diagnostic tools, but they do not seem to help at all.
    Does anyone have any suggestions before this Acer Mini becomes an Acer Multi;)

    If this helps...... I just tried a different network diagnostics tool on the Acer Mini which sent a ping to the base unit, but it said "request timed out" and failed. It got this result for the gatewayIP, the DHCPServer, and the DNSServerSearchOrder. And I have no idea what they even are:)

    Dear friends:
    I just built my first AMD system, with some hesitation to be honest, and of now, the new system has a memory related problem.  I have the following:
    Crucial  (512MB X 2) 1 GB  PC3200 400Mhz  CL3 DDR DIMM (Model:
    CT6464Z40B)
    When I tried to install WinXP Pro for the first time with the two memory modules installed, the system will freeze in the middle of the installation.  When I removed the module from slot 3 (green in color) and leave the other in slot 1 (green), WinXP will load in a breeze.  With WinXP loaded, I re-inserted the module in slot 3 and after a short while the system froze again.  I removed it once more and the system runs as it should.  I removed the module in slot 1 and replaced it with the one in slot 3, and ran the PC with just that one and the PC run just fine, I even installed SP2 and the system runs just fine with one memory module.  My conclusion is that the MOBO doesn't what to run with both modules installed.  I haven't flashed the BIOS yet, that will be my next step.
    Could someone please help me set the DRAM configuration in the BIOS.  I know someone out there already has the right settings for the brand and model mention above and running a stable system.
    Also please help me decipher what the following means (as far as the sequence goes):  2.5-3-3-5-1T TrC11

               2-3-2-5-1T 230Mhz    ***** these are not the right ones******
    Where do the above go when the sequence in the DRAM in the BIOS in the following:

     That's IT!!  I've HAD it!!    M_ther F_cker!  M_ther F_cker!  No MORE!  Not Tonight!
    I give up.  I have messed with every single Memory timing and voltage setting.  One stick of crucial memory works no matter what the settings are, and two sticks of crucial memory throw errors no matter what I do to the BIOS settings.
    I took my memory to my friends house, who also has a K8N-Neo2 and it does the very same thing.  There appears to be a problem with this mobo / ram combination.    
    I am going to contact MSI about it.  For now, I am just using one stick of the Crucial memory just so I can have a stable system.  
    hansh, The reason you aren't having problems is because you are using Ballistix Crucial memory.  chinche and I are using standard issue (read cheaper) Crucial memory.  My friend is also using the Ballistix memory and his system is very stable and the memory even runs in Dual Channel mode!  I'm going to see what MSI comes up with.  If they can't help, I am going to RMA the cheap stuff and go for the Ballistix.
    chinche, here is how to decipher the memory timings (at least according to memtest86+)
    Tcl - Trcd - Trp - Tras - 1T/2T
    They are slightly out of order with the K8N-Neo2 BIOS settings page.
    3-3-3-8-2T means
    1T/2T Memory Timing = 2T
    CAS# latency (Tcl) = 3
    RAS# to CAS# delay (Trcd) = 3
    Min Ras# active time (Tras) =8
    Row precharge Time (Trp) =3
    Sometimes people will list @2.6V or @200Mhz also.  This is either the Memory Voltage or the Memory Clock.
    If you find the solution, please post it here.  I will do the same.

  • K8N Neo2 plat, no post issue cont'd.

    Hi its me again, the guy with the intermittent "no post" k8n neo2 plat.
    Loaded the 1b3 beta the other day, again 1 day later the box would not post, as usual no
    indication on the D-bracket, just one flash of the keyboard, the fans span one half round.
    Since it could run for 1month plus with 1a3 beta BIOS(no usb2.0 (I could not wait any longer wanted usb2.0 so I flashed to a newer bios)),
     start thinking it could be something between these latter full versions and this.
    Then saw a thread on the web about someone having a Winnie that his box also has issues when swapping for latter
    version than 1.5, with 1.5 his plat run fine. Go figure.
    So for the time being I switched it to v1.5 bios, lets see how long it holds.
    oh btw, the CMOS clear "no effect" seem to be avoided, by unplugging every external
    peripheral prior to doing the cmos clear.

    The Led display from your D-Bracket indicates it is stopping when it tries to initialise the floppy drive.  You don't have one.  No A+ course needed, just hook up your floppy or disable it in the BIOS.  I have no floppy drive (I have no need) so have it disabled.  Probably best to hook up all relevant devices that will enable a working machine.  The BIOS is probably halting when it can't initialise a device.  There would be no point in it proceeding if it doesn't have all devices needed for a bootable machine...

    Anyone had Win XP SP2 detecting SATA drives as removable devices and placing the icon in the system tray with this board, Both my SATA drives have now become removable since installing this board under XP with the drivers off the CD and the updated Nforce drivers.

    im currenntly stable with them working on dimeslot 3+4 (Slot1+2 crashed system, wouldnt even boot.) but my system feels like its very under performing
    I hope its not to much to ask but could you list you BIOS settings for your CELL menu ???
    also is your timings (2-3-3-8 @1T) faster then what im using...

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum RAID Boot Issue...

    Hi everyone,
    I am running two WD 120gb drives in single-drive mode.  Everything is working fine.  My issue is that every time I boot, I have to wait nearly 10 seconds for a message that says 'Detecting Array' just before it loads WinXP.  The thing is, I have RAID disabled in the BIOS.  How do I get rid of this annoying boot message?
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Temp problems...

    I just got this board and plugged my FX-53 into it.  In an air conditioned room @ 60'F, a cold bootup and in the bios it says my Mobo temp is 30'C, CPU 40'C.  Within 30 seconds, the CPU temp shoots up to 55'C.  It then will then sporadically jump between 50'C and 62'C.
    I managed to install XP and all my drivers and I downloaded the MSI monitoring program and it listed my CPU @ 74'C and my motherboard @ 9'C...  
    I'm a bit weary because I don't want to fry my $900 cpu.  Is anyone else having problems???
    This is with an XP-120 heatsink installed w/AS5 (thin layer, not half the tube   )

    I noticed that everyone here is complaining about the High Temperatures from the K8N Neo2 Platinum Series for the Socket 939.  I too am having difficulties with the temps.  
    In core center it shows a Temp. at 140°F which to me seems outrageously high.  Tech support from MSI told me to physically touch the heatsink and if it felt hot or warm I may have a problem.  It did not feel warm at all.  However, MSI claims to not be having issues with the Temp readout on the motherboard specified.  (See below).

    I had the ASUS A8V Deluxe w/ wifi and switched do to some slow boot times and the fact that NVIDIA's chipset is usually better than VIA.
    Question is this :
    What good quality heatsink and fan should I get for the socket 939 chipset.  I see people posting about the Zalman 7000 and Venus 12.  But, is there a really good one without necessarily having to take the board out of the case and removing the backplate?
    I also see people claiming to have a bios of 1.2 or 1.3.  Where do you get these?  I can only find 1.1 and that is what I am running and there is no change in temps.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat - No start beep...

    Hello,
    Does anyone finaly found why with the K8N Neo2 Plat board sometime the puter wont beep and start? Need to shut it down and try a few time before it does beep and start the puter? Basicaly the problem is that when you start the computer you should hear a beep then you will see something in your monitor screen such as drive information, cpu speed and memory then it will search for cd, floppy boots and then windows will start if no boots are found but there is no beep and nothing appear on the screen then you have to shutdown the puter and try a few reboot then somehow it decide to beep and start...
    I've read many thread and I tryed this so far:  
    -Removed Keyboard and mouse
    -Tryed to push harder the video card in its slot
    -Tryed to push harder the memory in their slot
    -Tryed to push harder the sound card in its slot
    -Tryed to push harder the LAN card in its slot
    -Tryed to start the computer without the monitor
    -Tryed to remove all my additional fans to give more power.
    -Tryed to reinstall Windows XP SP2
    -Took a look at the cpu and cpu fan
    -Changed my video card for a new one
    -Tryed to remove memory and it only does a long beep and no system start at all. (which is normal)
    -Removed Spectrum, aggressive timing in bios, no overclock setting also.
    I have tryed all these and still have problem starting my computer. Is it a motherboard problem? a Power supply problem? a Cpu problem? A memory problem? If anyone can help to find out it would be great!
    By the way maybe its because im not english but I dont know what PSU mean, can anyone tell me?  Thanks

    You might want to try a better PSU as the Antec SL400 does only 18amps....

  • K8N Neo2 BIOS HELP

    Hi all, this is my first post being new here, and i was hoping it would be a problem free issue but sad to say i need your help please, ive just installed a K8N Neo2 nForce mobo, with the following components, Geil 2gb ram, saphire x800xl AGP card, 1 main 80gig hd (master) and 1 200gb (slave) hd, and 1 audigy 2 sound card, all seemed ok and i could go into the BIOS to disable the onboard sound, but i need to pop back in the BIOS, but when i reboot and press the DEL key to do so nothing happens i get a cursor flashing were is usualy loads 1 or 2 info and then goes into the Bios but its not doing this at all now, i can load system as normal but cannot enter bios can anyone please help and before i go on i will say im a computer build virgin well this is my first ever build and wiull be last if i cant sort ths out, so please help if you can cheers  ???

    Tbh im havin more probs then just the one mentioned, but i think the bios one is the more important, but other things like the live auto update, and the core centre, software and maybe others, yet they come on the cd-rom and am for my mobo i get a error msg saying corecentre is not for my mobo when it is, and the live update i get error msgs sayin couldnt start up or somethink like that cant remember now, this being my first build EVER, was wondering do other ppl have the probs i seem to get when building computers or am i the only one who doesnt know he is doing lol :(, cheers to the ones that have tried to help so far and am still trying, believe me i need it.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat - Fans / Temperature

    Hi,
    I just got and installed my K8N Neos2 Platinum. I am thoroughly confused by what I should expect from from the fans and temperatures...
    In terms of Temperature, the BIOS correctly reports temperatures for the CPU and Northbridge. Core shows CPU temperature, but says the NB temperature is not available. I think for this reason, the NBFAN1, Northbridge fan is always spinning at maximum. SpeedFan reports reasonable numbers for the temperatures, so I am guessing the sensors are working, and the Core software just isn't working.
    In terms of Fans, I see that there are 4 connectors. One is for the CPU CPUFAN1, one is for the Northbridge (nForce) SBFAN1, and the other two are for system fans SFAN1 and SFAN2. What sort of control should I expect here? I can't tell if my board is fully functional or not. In BIOS, I can set a CPU Fan target which I guess spins ups the fan if the CPU gets too hot. I have no direct controls in BIOS for the fans, and I don't see Northbridge fan controls anywhere in BIOS.
    I installed SpeedFan to see if I could narrow this stuff down. With SpeedFan, I can spin down the Northbridge fan, NBFAN1, which seems to happen at 80%, and if I go under 80%, I get crazy readings like 16,000 RPM, and the fan seems to just spin slow but not stop. However, I cannot spin the CPU fan up or down at all, I have no control. Also, if I plug my case fan into SFAN1, it doesn't show up in SpeedFan, and it runs at full speed. If I plug the case fan into SFAN2, it does show up in SpeedFan, and runs at 1200 RPM, but again I have no control whatsoever over it's speed.
    So, what should I expect? Should I be able to control anything? Or is it pretty much just chance? I'd like to be able to control the fan speeds in BIOS or with software, but it looks like I have no real control over anything. That doesn't seem correct...

    Just recently built up my first system, so I have been struggling with the fan issues too (they work, but I really want to know WHY and HOW they work).
    The K8N Neo2 Platinum manual shows the SFAN1 and SFAN2 connector diagrams as having NC (no connection) on the speed sense lines for both system (case) fans. The CPUFAN1 and "Northbridge" NBFAN1 (used for the Nvidia Nforce3 chip's cooler) both are monitored and reported in SpeedFan or CoreCenter. As was posted, the ability of the Windows-based tools to control the fans is dependent on having the BIOS H/W Monitor CPU Fan Target set to "Disabled".
    SFAN2 is used for my case exhaust fan, and it does seem to be running at less than full tilt, so maybe something is adjusting the voltage even if the speed cannot be monitored. Sure would be nice to have an MSI engineer weigh in on this (or for MSI to provide better documentation since these are enthusiast boards).  
    Just to complete the picture, I run my case intake fan at full voltage off a 4-pin Molex to keep the case slightly pressurized to help keep dust out (intake fan has a filter).
    Anyone out there with concrete technical data on the SFAN1/2 logic or code?
