K8N Neo2 Plat IDE and SATA problems

Last night I was able to install XP onto a Raid 0 set up with 2x36 GB Raptors. (These were on Sata3/4 as I had heard about oc problems with the other Sata ports).  No other drives were installed. After installing XP I decided to shut down and add a 40 gb IDE drive that had several things I needed (like programs!) and also installed another Sata drive, this time it was on Sata 2.
(I did discover that the system will not boot if there are drives on IDE2 (optical drives) while IDE1 is empty... so moved the optical drives to IDE1)
After installing the two extra drives I booted up. Fine. But when I went to change a display setting, got BSOD.
So went back and tried again to setup the Raid 0 and install XP. Even without the extra drives, no luck.
After third attempt, I gave up on Raid and just installed XP onto one of the Raptors that was on either Sata 3 or 4. No other HD's installed.  It worked.
Then went back and tried to stick that 40gb IDE in and the 80gb Sata.
Ack! No boot and got a hal.dll error. Googled that and I guess it has some sort of virus or whatever. Figures. Okay. Disconnect both the 40 and 80 and it boots.
This time tried just with the SATA 80 (in addition to boot drives). No luck. Get an error saying that it can't find boot drive or something like that.
Next tried to move the Sata cables around, putting the true boot drive onto Sata1. Of course it didn't work and NOW (after putting the cables back the way they were for the boot drive i.e. Sata3/4 (not sure which) the system will not boot at all giving the "no system disk" error.
If I had hair to pull out it would be gone.
When looking into the BIOS I see that the 2 36gb Rap's are on IDE channel 5 and 6.
I don't know what BIOS I am running.
Is there some sort of "priority" that XP assigns to various IDE channels? Sata ports? At this point I could care less about overclocking, so am thinking of putting the 2 36gb Rap's on Sata 1/2 and starting from scratch trying to install XP on Raid 0 (yes, I installed the Raid drivers from a floppy). Shouldn't that work? I might end up just using the 80 gb SATA drive as the boot drive and not using the Raptors.
Someone please save me!

Be interested how stable your raid setup stays? See my post https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=94536.new#new
Been driving me crazy. System stays stable, now I've ditched raid, as long as the other Raptor doesn't have XP on it. It seemed that XP was seeing two disks instead of one at close down when I had raid installed and writing to just one - very weird - which blew the array. Never had these problems with Promise Sata Raid.  I suspect, like many others, that NV have a driver problem.
You know... you didn't really HAVE to share this info with me!!
Let's hope it stays stable. If not, then I will get a different Raid controller.
Along with backing up my data on that array as soon as I can!

  • K8N Neo2 Plat power and bios question

    I have a K8N Neo2 Plat. I use a UltraProducts 500W xconnect PSU and a BFG 6800 GT OC.
A couple weeks ago the 6800 died. I contacted BFG and they sent me a new one.
The new one died the same way after a week. They said to check the power levels on the +12 rail.
In windows using softare tests it reports 13.58
in the bios it reports 12.22
both are over the allowed variance.
Ultra products told me to check with my motherboard manufacturer to see if there was a BIOS setting that would let me set the power on the +12V rail. Is that possible?
Is that something my K8N Neo2 Plat can do?

No, you cannot lower the 12V-rail by a bios setting. I really don't see what they mean by that.
Your motherboard does, however, regulate the power that comes from the power supply. Within certain margins it can lower the voltage and keep it steady. Your videocard can do the same. Now, depending on the tolerance (quality) of your hardware, you can vary on those margins. But on any piece of hardware, there is a point on which it cannot correct/lower a voltage that is too high. It then simply shuts down or dies.
To my opinion, the PSU-maker gave you a very funny piece of advice. What he actually says is that their psu may give too high a voltage (I talk about the 13+ now), but your hardware should correct this. That's not the way it works: they should make psu's that give 12V where it should. So, I'd demand a replacement. But, before you do: use a multimeter to measure the 12V-rail. You cannot trust the board's measurement too well.
But then, like Stick  says, I think that 12.22 is within mentioned margins. 13.58V is too high. So, that's why you should first measure using a multimeter. Measure for a longer time. System idle, system full load. Write everything down and see how steady this psu is. If 12V dances arround, replace it.

  • K8N Neo2 + Maxtor DiamondMax 10 (SATA) problems!

    hello.
i wanted to know, if anyone knows a working solution for the problem that the nforce3 chipset / nvidia sata controller / mobo bios or just (some?) k8n neo2 mobos causes the system to freeze while booting when a maxtor diamondmax 10 is installed?
for anyone who still has problems: a temporary solution for 1-drive-users is to plug the drive to the sata4 port (right between the agp and the cpu socket), instead of plugging it to sata1, which would be the correct procedure under ordinary circumstances though.
i found out that my own system was highly unstable as long as i connected the drive to one of the first two sata ports. the other ones worked better. is the problem limited to sata 1/2 on everyone's board? if not, it would be RMA-able.
but there is another thing besides the instability of these expensive pieces of trash (sorry, no other hard drive and mobo has given me a harder time yet!) that bothers me more:
why is my maxtor diamondmax 10 6b300s0 so noisy? on idle it runs very smooth and is quiet, but under heavy load it almost roars as loud as my old u2w-scsi drives i had back in 1995. could it be that windows or the sata controller does not turn on the cache?
i hope, somebody can share his experience.
    wan-hi

I've got the neo2 and 2 Diamondmax 10 Maxtors in RAID1. I've had loads of trouble as well... Today is my first day without a freeze and hard reboot needed. I started building (slowly mind you) about 3 weeks ago.
If this is actually stable now, perhaps you can try a similar setup. All these steps had frequent hangs and re-attempts.. I got through in the end tho. (Doesn't instill confidence that you have a stable build tho!!)
I have the 2 drives on SATA 3,4
All SATA BIOS settings are enabled (inc port 1,2 settings)
I used the 2 RAID drivers on the supplied floppy disk (same revisions as on the website currently)
I installed WinXP with service Pack 1 built in (is that what people mean when they say a streamlined XP install?)
After updating all the motherboard drivers etc, I installed Service Pack 2. With SP2 I had frequent unrepeatable hangs, but cpu burn type programs and games wouldn't trigger it.
Only office type work/browsing seemed to kill it.
I switched to a USB mouse from PS2, and that seemed to help.
Last thing I tried was uninstalling SP2 and it's lasted all day now. Longest strtech previously was 3,4 hours of intermittent use.
I agree with you about the noisy Maxtors though.. I had a Seagate Barracuda before and that was really silent. These don't whine at all but clatter when seeking.
Apparently with the Diamondmax 9's you could use a Maxtor utility to quieten (slow) the seeks, and a IBM/Hitachi util also worked.
I can't get either to work cos the 10's are SATA only drives. Maxtor util only works with IDE (or perhaps SATA non RAID), and IBM just fails to see them.. shame. I think the Maxtor util might work with some other, older SATA controllers... have to track someone down with a compatible setup who doesn't mind me carving up their machine. Actually haven't tried adjusting when the drives aren't RAIDed.. hmmm.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat, SATA2 and Shutdown Problem...

    Hi, new here.
Glad to have a board like this to ask some questions to other users.
Purchased the board a few months ago, and apart from the      noisy NB fan, all was ok.
Then recently bought a 200GB SATA2 drive (see specs in signature).
Since its installation, but not before, I've had a systematic shutdown and reboot problem: the shutdown proceeds as usual, the "Windows is shutting down" and "Saving preferences" dialogs come and then disapear... but then only the mouse cursor is left on blank screen (it can even be moved), and the shutdown process doesn't go further; after several minutes I just shut it down with the power button.
The event logs don't show anything problematic.
    A few more details:
My drivers are the most recent (official) from MSI.
I've installed Win2000 in ACPI Uniprocessor PC Mode.
The drive is recognized as a sata2 device.
I use the SATA#1 (nVidia) port.
I've put the pagefile on that drive.
Nothing is overclocked, CoreCenter is disabled.
I've installed the UPH Clean tool from Microsoft, but that didn't help.
    Memory passed lengthy memtest session.
Strangely, the SATA2 drive appears in the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" list in the tray, usually reserved for connectable devices (USB, etc): is that normal? (I'm new to sata drives)
I've searched this board for similar problems, but they seemed to be mostly in RAID context, which isn't the case for my system.
Any idea what might be the problem ? Anyone experienced the same problem (non-RAID) ?
Apart from above problem, drive seems to function normally.
    Thanks in advance.

@gerasimatos: maybe he used xsetup? didn't try it yet, will have a look. In the BIOS, all RAID-related settings are disabled.
@kakarocht: the power managment in the BIOS has the default settings.
Will try to change a few params here and there.
I have not tried yet other ports on nVidia controllers.
I may eventually try the Sil ports, in last resorts, BUT I would prefer to solve this issue with nVidia ports first (I think at the price we pay these things we shouldn't be precluded from half the SATA ports!     )
I tried to list as much relevant specs as I could in the signature and post. Here are others:
memory used at 2.5-3-3-7 1T setting (memtest passed)
    regular ps/2 keyboard
    ms intellimouse (using ps/2 connection)
the asus graphic card used in single monitor mode (recent drivers)
when I said "CoreCenter" disabled above, meant "Cool'n'Quiet" disabled (not stressing system yet, so 'cool' isn't an issue; as for quiet, if the board can't lower the NB fan speed, it's a non-issue!!!)
    using on-board sound-card
using onboard gigabit port for internet connection
    no other peripherals installed presently
hard drives temps stay under 40 C (not stressing system lately)
I removed DigiCell and CoreCenter from loading at startup (don't need them for now)
closing firewall (zonelalarm) before shutdown didn't help (although didn't try unloading the service yet)
... what else might be of help to list?...
Again, I'd like to know if it's normal that a SATA2 hd drive appear in the "Unplug and Eject Hardware" tray icon list; I wasn't expecting that, but I'm new to this kind of connection.

  • P965 platinum ide and sata problems

in bios om my mb it says that i have ide not sata >:(.
and i cannot see my cd-rom as an ide.
i have tried to update bios but it didnt work i tried liveupdate and usb stick.
when i set my mb to ahci function on my sata config, windows dosent find the disk in the os installation. and my computer cannot load windows.
in windows something is wrong with the cd-rom when i use it my computer is going slowly.
i think this problem is caused by the jbmicron software.
anybody who can help me with this problem??
    Specs:
    Msi p965 platinum
    c2d e6600
    corsair twin2x 2048mb ram
    xfx geforce 7900gt
    wd raptor 10000rpm 74gb
    seagate 160gb sata2
    thermaltake pure power 460w

Would much appreciate some help if anyone is familiar with this issue!
I'm having a very difficult time getting the the 965 Platinum to recognize my IDE devices, and I don't know why. I've got a Sony DRU-500A DVD burner in the master position, and a Maxtor 6L300R0 hard drive in the slave position. The jumpers on those devices are appropriate for their position. The devices are "usuable", that is, I've been able to run the Windows XP installer (up to a point) and writes have occured to my hard drive, but the installation fails after the portion where you reboot after all the files have been written from the install disk.
In any case, the Standard CMOS screen simply never shows any devices detected on either the IDE Primary Master or Slave entries. I've tried disconnecting the DVD drive and just connecting the Hard Drive as master instead with no improvment. I've also tried disabling the SATA configurations, toggling PCI IDE Busmastering. Nothing works.
I've never been able to boot into Windows.
There was a point where the JMicron Raid menu showed this drive as a raid drive for reasons that aren't clear to me (the drive may have been a raid drive in the past). I've set the drive back to non-raid, rebooted back into my old system and everything checks out. No problems at all, so I think that there are any RAID issues.
I'm not a pro at building systems, so there could be user error anywhere alonog the way.
    Any ideas? I'm bamboozled!

  • K8T Neo2 (K8T800 Pro) and SATA problems

I've used Live Update to update my board and SATA controller, but in device manager, I'm informed that the SATA controller cannot start.  During startup, I have no option to configure my two new SATA drives, and there's no evidence that my system detects them whatsoever.
I have a 40GB IDE drive running xp, and right now, I just want to use the two additional  Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB drives for extra storage.
Can anyone help me with this?

  • K8N Neo2 Plat NICs and Linksys Router

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 4 port Router with the latest Firmware and when I connect either RealTek or Nforce onboard Network to it, the Red DIAG LED on the router goes on every few seconds. Seems like it floods my router. I can still view webpages when this is going on but when the Red DIAG Led comes on, my router freeses up. By that I mean all traveling data is haulted until DIAG LED turns off. One thing I noticed is that the activity light to the NIC is constantly flashing. This also only happens when the computer with the K8N Neo2 is the only one connected to the router. If I disconnect the This computer then it stops flooding.
    Specs:
    Athlon 64 3500+
    K8N Neo2 PLatinum Ver.1 Bios Version 1.2
    2 X 512MB Corsair DDR400 2-2-2-5 timings
    eVGA Geforce 6800GT
    Western Digital Raptor 2 74.3GB 10,000
    Windows XP Pro
    Things I tried:
    1. Installed latest Router Firmware. Still floods router
    2. Installed Linksys PCI LNE100TX NIC. Connect that Nic to router with other onboard NICs disabled in the Bios and still floods. I've used this nic in other computer with no issues when connected to router.
    3. Tried different Patch network Cables. Still Floods
    4. Connected NIC directly to Cable Modem and Activity LED constantly Flashing. Internet works fine though when connected straight to modem.
    5. Disabled 1394 Net adapter in "Network Connections". still flood.
    6. I tried flow control option thats located under the Advanced Tab in NIC properties on both onboard NICs. Still floods.
Anyone else have this Router/Motherboard and have issues like this?
    Any other suggestions?
    THanks for everyones help!!

I have the older BEFSR41 router. Not the newer version 2 I believe it is.
Anyone have this older router with the same motherboard and have any issues?

  • K8N Master-2 FAR and SATA problems

I have installed W2K Server at my PC with the board.  But whatever I try, I can't get my SATA-drive to show up in Windows.
For the moment I'm booting from an old IBM Deskstar PATA-drive.
I have installed SP4 and reinstalled the nVIDIA RAID/SATA-drivers several times, also including an total reinstall of W2K Server.
Initially I tried with the SATA drive (a WD Raptor 74GB) as bootdisk (non-RAID) but as that doesn't worked I installed at an old 40 GB Deskstar I had.  Therafter I have tried many combinations of: RAID enabled/disabled, RAID-drivers installed/Not installed, original drivers (from the MB-CD:s/diskette) and some downloaded nVIDIA drivers.  No luck.   >:(
The SATA-drive shows up OK in BIOS (at IDE Master 2 if RAID not enabled, not in any IDE definiton if RAID enabled) and shows status "Whealty" in the RAID-config/BIOS menu.
But doesn't show up as any disk in Windows.  The closest I come with the RAID/JBOD setup was an "unknown" device in the IDE-tree in Dev.manager.  When I tried to install the RAID-driver (MB-CD) for that device I get "No driver found" - always.  When I try "Select from list" and select "nForce 4 Serial IDE driver" I get "this package is not compatible with the processortype".
Everything else seems to work, including network/Ethernet/LAN.
    Other:
    CPU:             1 x Opteron 246
PSU:             Fortron Source Epsilon 600W, Blue Fan, Active PFC, ATX/EPS, SLI, 20/24pin
    SATA drive:  WD Raptor 74GB
    IDE drive:     IBM Deskstar 40GB
    Graphic:        Gainward GeForce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3, PCI-Express
    At boot shows: W9620NMS V1.1 061405
No other external peripherals/cards other than Monitor, mouse and keyboard.
    TIA
    Thomas

I have now succeded to install a driver (although I have other problems now, see below), but the drive still refuses to work in Windows.  The drivers that came with the MB had only these .inf-files: nvatabus.inf and nvraid.inf.  With one of the drivers I downloaded, NForce WHQL 6.86, there was an "nvata.inf" that worked.
I got an ok message from the install routine and rebooted.  Still no cigar.  In dev.manager there was (in the desc box for the nForce SATA controller in "IDE-controllers") a text about that there was not enough information returned from the device/HW for windows (driver ?) to get it to work.  And a suggestion to install another driver or repair the HW.
(Something like that, I cant access the PC now as my PATA/BOOT-disk seems to begin to die as I now constantly get BSOD w. "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" in ntoskrnl.sys at boot.  Or maybe the corruption is caused by my many tries to install a working driver.)
As I can run Spinrite against the disk (through a selfbooting diskette) it seems that there is no problem with the disk or the  SATA-cable.  (I run a surface analyze through the whole disk whithout any problems.)
I have seen at nforcershq.com's forum that there seems to be many problems with the nForce chipset and drivers for SATA-disks.  Maybe that's what I have.  But there is also many that have working examples with SATA-disks, especially WD-disks.
I'm thinking of buying a SATA controller card and install it in the PC instead, as someone else there did.
But that would be a pity as the SATA-functions was one of the major reasons I bought this MB and also that there is only one PCI-slot and not many PCIe-slots at the MB !   >:(

  • K8N Neo2 Plat w/ Antec TB480 Problem

Hi all, I'm upgrading some system components.  PSU, MB/Proccessor, RAM.
I set up the MB with only the processor, heatsink/Fan (Gigabyte 3D), 1 stick of the RAM, video card, D-Bracket (for troubleshooting lights), outside the case sitting on the MB box on top of the bag the MB came in.
Attached power to the heatsink/fan, the 20-pin and the 4-pin MB connectors, turned the PSU on, and everything looked great.  The lights were going through their paces, everything looked and sounded real good.
Disconnected the power and removed the video card, put the MB in the case, hooked the PSU back up, put the video card back in, turned on the power, and nothing....
No fans on the PSU, nothing on the MB, just nothing...
Took everything back out, tried it the same way it had worked before, and nothing.
Hooked my old PSU (280w, which while weak, was working with old MB) to the MB (with the PSU sitting outside the case, not sure if that matters) , and ...   Nothing.
    I'm a bit stumped.

So lemme get this straight. It fires up, then you shutdown, barely breath, press the power button and nothing, nada zip, not even a peep?

After reading again, what happened above could also be the trip protection on the PSU kicking in. After removing the power to the PSU and a short wait, it should recover.
When I first read your post, I thought it might be an ESD issue. Not to the point of damage but where a charge may cause a no boot situation. I know I read somewhere recently....wait see page 16 of 111 Section 2-10 http://us-download.msi.com.tw/support/mnu_exe/mbd_mnu/E7025v1.0.zip
    Also.....
Either there is an intermittent connection on the 20 pin connector, a broken solder joint on the mobo connector, a short somewhere on the mobo or the PSU's faulty. What gets me is you tried a different PSU with the same result so that may not be it at all. I was also thinking that there may be a clearance problem with the solder side of the mobo to the mounting plate of the case. Take one or two of your standoffs and see if you can see any protrusions (ie solder joints/pins) that may exceed the standoffs length.
Got to be a short or an intermittent connection somewhere. Or, possibly a combination of all the above. In that case you'd be chasing your tail, kinda like you're doing now? Poor soul
May be a goose chase, but I would check the power switch connector, check the jumperblock solder joints from the solder side. Also check the solder joints on the 20pin mobo connector on the solder side. Then, check the PSU's 20pin connector and make sure the shell connectors are not stretched out or deformed. And finally, try a third PSU if available.
Sorry my message is a bit convoluted, but I almost lost this whole post when my kvm switch decided to to do the pee pee dance, and got caught in an endless loop. Damn Sticky keys!

  • A few K8N Neo2 Plat problems

Just getting this new rig up and going K8N Neo2 Plat with a 3200 Winchester 90nm CPU and 1GB (2x512) OCZ PC3200 Plat. rev2.  My memory is not showing to be running in Dual Channel.  and Sandra bandwidth is horrible to say the least.   I have flashed to the latest bios that MSI has on the site, are their any better ones?  I see some people running different versions of 1.3 bios, where are they?  I have two Barracuda 80Gb S-ATA set up on #3-4 Sata connectors too in Raid (0).

Skeen, Duke is right. I have the same memory and you MUST use slot 1&2 for dual channel support. Look inthe manual on the page about memory. It gives 2 charts. The first one is for dual channel memory and the second one is for normal memory. Also I did a Sandra test that is somwhere here in the forums where I posted the results with 1&2 and 3&4 and 1&2 was slightly faster. Use them (the ones closest to the CPU).

  • New K8N NEO2 PLAT. and SC-939 3200+ help needed...

    Hello,
I have just upgraded my system with K8N Neo2 Plat. and sc-939 3200+ A64 Cpu.
There are several issues I need to resolve which are:
1- Although I change from BIOS the settings for AGP to 4x8x and enable fast writes, I still cant see them turned on from the Catalyst Control Center. Everything is greyed out what can I do? They all used to be on and agp was 8x with my K7N2 Delta board....
2- Although I installed the original drivers from the MSI CD, I couldn't get one of the network prts to install. Realtek installed OK. But other one is defined by the device manager as standart network adapter. What can I do?
3- I am brand new to A64 system so I do not know what setting to use from BIOS can you help me out, for instance there are values for HT such as x3 x4 x5  mine is set to x5? what is this? should  I enable cool and quiet, I am not intended to do overclocking. Can you give me some tips for best performance?
    My best regards.

Make sure your bios is up to date: version 1.5. Look at the sticky threads and use the information to enable hidden bios features. Disable ATI/NV speedup in the bios. Uninstall your drivers and reinstall. If the information is still greyed out, download the free version of Sandra here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/ and check the module under video system information. This will tell you if fast writes are enabled and your AGP setting. Leave the HT(hyper-transport) set to 5X unless you plan on oc'ing, if you do oc then may find you'll need to reduce it to 4X or 3X. Try downloading the latest driver for your network from the MSI website. Right click the device in device manager and select update, select specific location then "don't look...I'll choose", direct it to the file where you've unpacked the correct driver and then update.

well i'll be damned.  spread spectrum.  it was spread spectrum being enabled.  there just isn't a more satifying feeling that thinking you figured out what was causing freezes and then finding out it's repeatable!!
spread spectrum on. freeze.  reboot.  freeze.  reboot. freeze.  spread spectrum disabled.  reboot.  no freeze.  reboot.  no freeze.   reboot.  no freeze.  spread spectrum back on.  reboot.  freeze.  reboot. freeze.
    i love it.

  • Freezing issues with K8N Neo2 Plat & 6800 gt

Well I get random freezing during games. Sometimes it freezes for 5-10 seconds then comes back, while other times it just freezes and the sound comes back but not the game.
I had this problem when I first upgraded.

    audigy 2 plat
Now I first posted my problem a while ago and someone told me to try chaning the HT to 4x instead of 5x. So I did and it worked. It worked for a few weeks and now the problems have come back.
    Any Ideas?

Along with the above issues, I've also found that a lot of my gaming probs with the 6800 are due to it being a "bandwidth hog" & it's latency needs to be adjusted lower to enable the other devices on the PCI bus (i.e. sound card) to get enough bandwidth to function properly. This isn't noticeable until you start some heavy gaming with a lot going on at once...
If your game ever practically chugs to a halt when a lot of sounds are being produced, this is the main problem. Here's a way & some notes on how to deal with it. Just like every "tweak" though, it's not guaranteed to work for everyone but I got noticeable benefits from it.
    - D/L (I got it @ guru3D) PCI Latency Tool & give the "Read Me" a quick once-over. Write down the values for your devices, in case you need/want to change 'em back. Most items are well labeled - the 6800 & your sound card will be what you are most interested in. I wouldn't mess with the rest of 'em, as they deal with low level system items that are best left alone. Unless you are truly an Uber Geek!
    - The latency for my 6800 listed as a massive 248 clks! For some reason, I've read that ATI cards don't default at such a large value, which might explain why people don't seem to have as many performance issues with 'em. Anyhow lower the 6800 to a more "reasonable" value, like 128 or 64. 64 seemed to work best for me.
    - Save the settings, reboot & test it out. You can experiement with the sound card latency too, in order to find what works best for you, but I wouldn't set it at less than it's default value (32).
    Hope this helps.
