K8N Neo2 platinum & 750g sata RAID issue

Hi there I have an issue with booting up. I have 1 200g Western digital HDD where windows is installed and I have 1 further 500g WD drive which were both fine until I decided to buy 2 samsung 750g HDD's to run in RAID. I have installed the drives in RAID and formatted but I am having a problem with booting.
If I reset, the computer keeps rebooting at the detection stage, powers off and keeps doing it over and over. Sometimes it will go through if you wait long enough. When I turn the power on and off it will go through the detection stage no worries every time but then at the XP loading screen it will freeze there. Sometimes it goes through and I will boot into XP fine and other times I can't get in.
I have the latest Bios 7025V1D but I am wondering if this issue is bios related because of the 750g size... The problem has only started since I have installed the two 750g HDD's in RAID. Does this bios version support 750g HDD's? Is there an updated BIOS to fix this problem somewhere?
I have 2gig of ram, 3500+ processor, latest Nforce3 drivers from Nvidia, RAID drives on sata ports/3/4, 500gig WD on sata port 1, 200 gig WD is HDD is IDE, Windows SP2 and all updated, ummmmmm everything else is fine I'm fairly sure.
I had a few troubles installing the RAID drivers because windows didn't want to accept the drivers I downloaded from here and did not want to accept the drivers in windows. I ended up getting it the drives to come on-line through the use of START/NVIDIA corp/ NVIDIA RAID program (cant remember the name, typing this on another computer).
Any ideas would be greatly and very muchly appreciated!
Terry.

Ok My PSU is: WideTECH 550w, +3.3v=33a, +5v=36a, +12v=25a, -12v=1.0a, +5vsb=2.5a.
I am only running 3 HDD's at the moment, the 2 750's and the 1 200gig. I have left the other 500gig unplugged until I get this problem sorted. I don't have a cd rom plugged in or a floppy. I only connect them when I need to because this computer is setup to be a storage server and I use my other pc for anything dvd related etc. The only other thing which is chewing power is the video card which is an old 6800gt ultra. So basically the power issue was fine until I installed the two extra HDD's and as I have unplugged the 500gig for the time being its only really one extra HDD which shouldn't be an issue. Oh I have two 80mm case fans using the psu aswell.
As for my other specs: I have 1 gig of Geil dual channel RAM 2x512 sticks, CPU=AMD Athlon64 3500+, MB is MSI K8n Neo2 Platinum, Vid card= Leadtek geforce 6800gt ultra 256 agp, You know about my HDD's but here they are again= 1x 200g WD caviar IDE, 1x 500g WD caviar sata(1 I think), 2 x 750g samsung sata (2 I think), OS = XP Home SP2 with all lasest automatic updates, latest BIOS etc etc etc....
My windows is a legit copy as well.
You mentioned putting my HDD's into sata 1 mode... I was of the opinion that my motherboard does not support sata2 anyway and would not allow them to run in anything but sata1?? If I did want to change the sata mode where would I do this anyway?
Thanks for your reply but I don't think it has to do with psu or sata mode although I'm interested about this sata2 thing, please explain.
Thanks in advance,
Terry.

  • K8N NEO2 PLATINUM ATA-133 Raid ?

    Hello,
My question is, is it possible to setup an Ata-133 raid on the K8N NEO2 PLATINUM (as the main boot drive). Currently I have 2 ata-133 drives and I want to upgrade to this board. I looked at the PDF manual and read the forums, but people usally talk about thier Sata drives.
If it is possible to have only a Ata-133 raid setup. How/what is the best way to set it up since there is only a primary and secondary ATA connection on the motherboard.  Setup a master / slave on the primary 1 slot ? or put them on thier own channel ?  Note, I read somewhere that optical drives ( cdroms,...) may have a problem if they share the channel with a harddrive that is raided. So thats my dilema.
      Thanks in advanced,
                Jim

    jim,
did you ever get the RAID setup to work with the IDE drives?
i was trying to connect 2 ata100 drives on the IDE2 or IDE3 ports and the bios will not seem to detect them at all,
but the RAID controller DOES detect them.
however, it will try to boot from the master drive but restarts at the windows XP splash screen, every time.

Right. If we connect two IDE HDDs on one IDE1 or IDE 2 (as Master & Slave), and plan to set up RAID.Take IDE1 for example, as long as we set up Integrated Peripherals-->Onboard Device-->RAID Config-->IDE Primary Master&Secondary RAID-->Enabled, Save&exit setup; enter RAID bios to set RAID mode, all things would be ok. But if we want to install OS in this RAID, we must press F6 install RAID driver at the beginning of OS installation. If we only use them as normal storage, OS is in other HDD, we should install RAID driver in OS.
Besides, the two HDDs could not appear in Standard CMOS Features any more, which appear in RAID BIOS.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum MB + SATA Hard Disks

    Hi,
I would like to use some additional disk in my PC and therefore buy SATA disks.
The OS is WIN XP Pro and I want to keep my IDE configuration which is:
C:\ = IDE hard disk Primary Master
E:\ = IDE hard disk Prmary Slave
    D:\ = DVD Secondary Master
F:\ = IDE hard disk secondary slave
and to this I want to add just as data storage  SATA 300GB hard disks (¿ up to 4 ? is that possible ?)
    regards Rainer

I am not familiar with K8N Neo2-F so consult your manual to confirm my answers to your questions:
1- "Is this also the case for the SATA connectors on the K8N Neo2-F ??" Highly likely since your motherboard is a stripped down version of the Neo2 Platinum.
2- "And do SATA 1&2 require different drivers than 3&4?"  For normal SATA operation these SATA drives are respectively contol by your NF3 chipset and you Realtek chipset. When you install or update your Nvidia & Realtek driver package you install all that is required to run normal SATA operation. Should you decide to use a RAID configuration with your SATA drive then another RAID specific driver would have to be installed at system level.
3- "Also, is there a significant increase in performance when going from PATA to SATA on this series of mobos?" My answer does not take into account RAPTOR HDs which are in a super class of their own. Medium to High end latest PATA & first generation SATA HDs in the 7200 RPM class are promoted by their OEM as having respective top transfer speeds of 133 and 150 MB/s. Comparing my  Seagate 120 gigs PATA HD to my other two Seagate 200 gigs SATA HDs is not very scientific since  they are not all 200 Gigs. Therefore use discretion interpreting results.
    a. PATA - Peak transfer = low eighties ; Steady Transfer = high sixties
    b. SATA -  Peak transfer = mid nineties ; Steady Transfer = low eighties
It has ben a while since I did these PATA/SATA test so I  am working from memory only. One thing that however sticks in my mind is that the delta between my PATA & SATA drives, for peak and steady performance, was very close to 12 MB/s in favor of first generation SATA. Could this be possibly related to (150-133), I do not know for sure.
SATA II generation are now coming to market. These new generation SATA II drives will most likely widen the performance gap between them and older SATA I or PATA drive.
    Take good care,

  • SATA HDD installation on K8N Neo2 Platinum, Non-RAID, Non-Bootable

    Hi-
I’m a rank newbie on this forum (first post). I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum Mobo, which I’ve recently gotten up and running, with Windows XP-Pro SP2 installed on a single IDE drive. I would now like to add 2 SATA drives. I don’t need or want the SATA drives to operate in a RAID array, nor do I want them to be bootable. I want to use them independently for data storage. I read the following thread (I am posting here on a separate thread per the author’s wishes not to get his original thread too junked-up) :
Single SATA or Multiple Drive Array Setup FAQ
I have not yet plugged-in either of my SATA drives, because I don’t want to risk corrupting my existing boot (IDE) drive. I just had a few questions about the procedure given in the referenced thread, in the Single Drive Setup:
    - Step 14 States: “Make sure the “RAID Mode” is Stripping and Striping Block at 64k or Optimal. Hit F7 (Finish)”. Is this correct for a single non-boot drive?
    - Step 22 States: “As most of you know when you enter the Setup for Win2k/WinXP you will need to hit F6 to load additional drivers for other SCSI devices.” I assume this means I need to boot from the Windows CD. Is this true even if I already have Windows installed on an IDE HDD on this system? At what point will I need to hit <F6> ? Will I be prompted to do so?
    - I have downloaded (from the MSI website) the NVIDIA RAID CLASS DRIVER & NVIDIA Nforce Storage Controller (20 files, 1.3 MB total). Should I put these on a floppy? Or can I access them from a directory on my OS HDD?
    - Should I go ahead and plug-in both of the 2 SATA drives I want to add to the system before beginning the driver installation? The only reason I would consider installing them one at a time is if it eliminated any confusion between RAID vs. independent (I want independent operation). If I do install them one at a time, do I have to install the driver twice?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    - the bbdude

    OK Thanks JeanGuy and ssjkakaroto,
I have connected both of my SATA drives. They are enabled in BIOS but not set to RAID. I booted up to Windows on my IDE drive. In Disk Manager, the display shows Disk 0 (C: System), Disk 1 and Disk 2 as uninitialized, and my DVD (D:) drive. At this point, I could probably go ahead and run the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard to get these disks formatted and be dome with ot now. Before I do that though, I just have a couple of more questions.
    - I had already loaded the nVidia nForce3 system driver prior to installing the SATA drives, but I went ahead and did that again after installing the SATA drives and restarting Windows. I used Live Update, which went out to the MSI site and found version 5.03 of the  nVidia nForce3 system driver. I'm not sure how to find the "Nvidia 5.10 driver package which include the latest SATA driver", ssjkakaroto referred-to. The Live Update install procedure did ask if I wanted to install IDE driver and I said yes. It then asked to over-write what I already had there (I said yes to that too). As the file names streamed-by, I though I saw some filenames with nv... listed. So, bottom line, is I'm not sure if I have the lates and greatest nVidia SATA drivers installed. How can I find out what drivers are installed?
    - As I mentioned in my previous post, I have also downloaded and unzipped the NVIDIA RAID CLASS DRIVER & NVIDIA Nforce Storage Controller (20 files, 1.3 MB total) from the MSI site; however, I don't know how to "install" this now that I have the files. There are a couple of .exe and a .bat file (bit no setup.exe).
I may already have everything I need to partition and format these drives. I just want to bve sure I'm not skipping a step that is essential to optimal performance.
    Thanks -

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum - RAID Array Causes CPU Spikes!

I got my RAID array set up.
When I transfer files to it, my CPU usage (kernerl level) shoot up.  It's around 100%, and it slows my system way down.
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum.
RAID 0 using SATA ports 3 and 4.
I'm transferring files from my current windows installation to partitions on the raid array, so I can install windows on the array after removing the old drives.
I can transfer data fine, but using the array causes huge cpu usage which slows the rest of my system down a LOT.

    Hello !
Which SATA / Raid Driver did you install ? The ones from the nforce driver package provided by nvidia, or the original MSI driver ?
    Go here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=607&kind=1
And download and install the SATA RAID Driver, make a backup of your Data first.

Well, I have seen this post and it makes me wonder what are the differences between nforce chipset driver packages and the MSI ones if any? Thanks in advance.

  • Few question above the k8n neo2 platinum and raid

    hi
i have for now intel 3.4ghz and asus p4c800dlux and 4 sata drives :
2x36giga wd 10000 raptors in raid 0 (connected to the on board promise sata controller)
2x200giga wd 7200 jd sata that (connected to on bard sata ports)
i order a athlon fx-55 and k8n neo2 platinum for a oc (a have 2x512 corsiar pc4000pro and hydro cool 200 ) and its look that its going to be problem
"SATA ports 1+2 will not maintain a lock and you can and will corrupt hard drives placed on these channels if you raise the HTT above 220mhz."
    http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=ge...890&articID=228
so im in a problem, if i wont to do nice oc (and i will) i need to leave sata ports 1 and 2 not connected and buy a sata-pci controller for my 2x200giga , im right ?
in that case i need to connect the raptors in raid 0 in the sata 3-4 prots (near the agp) but:
the raid on the noe2 is "NV RAID (Software)" it means that there is no a controller like promise and the cpu need to replace the controller work, so its doing a lower performance.

If you had 4 huge drives I would be more sympathetic. To me every board is a compromise, resulting in me having to abandon something I might have done previoulsy. In you case ditch the two 36gb drives, and slum it with the 200gb drives. Remember that "overclocking" is not a right. There will be many users oblivious of the SATA 1/2 overclocking problems running 4 sata drives in RAID without a problem.

  • Which SATA port on the K8N Neo2 Platinum?

Hi! I recently got a 160GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus hard drive, but I have read somewhere (i forgot where I read it) that two S-ATA ports on the K8N Neo2 Platinum will corrupt your hard drive data if you overclock. I dont know if this is still true (I have BIOS ver 1.8) but please could someone tell me which port I should connect my S-ATA drive to? (the only drive I have at the moment is a 160GB IDE drive). I dont want RAID. Thanks!

If u go over 230 sata 1/2 are liable to corruption.

  • Reboot problem with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and 250 GB SATA HDD

I'm having a "reboot" problem with my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. After turning my system on it will run without any problems, until I reboot. After a reboot it will always hang after the initial windows-bootscreen. The HDD-light will remain on. If, instead of going into Windows XP SP2, I try to enter the BIOS after a reboot (DEL) the system will also hang (blank screen with blinking cursor).
It started doing this after I installed the Maxtor 250 GB SATA disk. Before, I didn't have problems rebooting. If I disconnect the Maxtor drive I can reboot and enter BIOS and Windows each and every time. Reconnecting the Maxtor 250 GB SATA drive will return the reboot problem. I always have to use the power swith to get a working system again. It's not enough to do a hard reset (this has the same effect as rebooting).
Here are the details of my system:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (BIOS 1.B)
    Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester, 2 Ghz, 512 KB cache, stepping DH-D0)
    2 x Kingston KVR400X64C25/512, 512 MB, DDR, PC3200 (2,5-3-3-8 T1)
Asus Radeon AX800 Pro (256 MB)
    PSU Antec Sonata 380W
HDD Maxtor 80Gb ATA (6Y080P0, Pri Master)
    HDD Seagate 250Gb SATA (ST3200822AS)
HDD Maxtor 250Gb SATA (6V250F0 - jumpered in SATA150 mode, the mobo wouldn't work with the drive in SATA300-mode)
Aopen COM5232/AAH Pro CD-Writer ATA (Sec Master)
BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer ATA (Sec Slave)
P.S. The NVidia IDE-drivers are NOT installed. System is not overclocked.

Thank you for all the replies. Upgrading to the latest Nvidia IDE-drivers did not fix my problem. Moving to other SATA-ports did not help either. Upgrading the mobo's BIOS is not really an option (I'm using one version before the most recent and there isn't anything in the fixlist of the latest BIOS).
Now I've contacted Maxtor for (hopefully) a new firmware.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum + Winchester 3200.. flabbergasting FSB issue

    OK, here goes the issue:
I just got a brand new K8N Neo2 Platinum - Bios 1.4 and a box 3200 Winchester CPU. The crazy thing is the FSB - it is set to 200 Mhz in the Bios, but in real-time it happens to be something like 200.95 Mhz. No idea how to fix this - as a result the CPU goes at 2010 Mhz, while obiviously it should run at 2000Mhz. There are also some stability problems, like random hangups in Windows. My ram is 2x512 Kingston HyperX PC4000.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Also about your "hang up" deal... Post more detailed specs on your system - You'll get better help that way.

  • Sound Issues /w K8N Neo2 Platinum

Hello, I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum and I am having trouble wit the sound. I have installed the drivers on the nForce CD, but I cannot hear anything.
    Any suggestions?

You should list what opperating system you're using aswell as the driver version that's giving you trouble, someone might spot a problem and be able to help you more easily, for instance if you're using XPx64 the drivers for XP wont work.
Maybe try downloading the latest version from Here or Here.
Also check in Device Mannager, does it say that there's a problem with your sound device or does it say it's working properly ?

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum Ordered - Advice for a noob please

    Hi there,
this seems like a great forum, was hoping someone could give me some advice - Im trying to pre-empt any major probs....
I am a relative noob to building P.C's - done a few P4 based systems before but this will be my first Athlon based.  This systems primary use will be gaming.  I have the following on order (should be with me next week) : -
    a) MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum Edition SCK 939 Motherboad
    b) AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ 64bit SCK 939 Retail Inc Fan
    c) 160GB Maxtor Calypso 8mb Cache 7200 SATA DHH
    Components I have already
    a) Graphics Card - Nvidia 6800 GT
    b) Memory - Generic 2 X 512MB PC2700 DDR333 RAM
    c) Sound Card - Creative SB Live Value
    d) PSU - Jeantech 450W (22a on 12V Rail)
    e) Case - pretty generic full tower case - no fans attached
    f) CPU FAN - COOLERMASTER HYPER 48 SUPER SILENT HEATPIPE
    g) Spare Hard drive - 120GB Maxtor IDE Hard drive
    h) DVD Drives - 1 x Pioneeer 108 / 1 x Pioneer 104
    I) Monitors - Ilyama 17" TFT & Toshiba 32WL36P LCD
I have some 'noobish' questions - apologies for my ignorance : -
    1) Memory - Will my memory be okay ?  Should I ditch it and buy some Corsair DDR400 (which everyone else seems to have!).  Will performance suffer if I stick with the DDR 333 ? Do I need to adjust settings in BIOS regarding memory timing ? (I only picked up on this from reading through other posts on this board, and am totally clueless on 'timing'- Ive never needed to adjust timing on any previous PC's....!)
    2) Sound Card - will I be better off sticking with the onboard sound on the MSI K8N neo 2 ? Or for best performance do I go with the SB LIve ? (god its a nightmare trying to get updated drivers for this card),  Would I get a noticable performance increase buying an Audigy 2?
    3) Vcore / other power issues - Reading this forum Im kinda scared by many posts along the lines of "..for stability I need to change my memory voltage to xx-V" or "...for a stable system I needed to change my Vcore to xx-V".  Will I need to change the Bios default values on this system just to get it to run stably??
    4) CPU FAN - Are AMD stock fans any good ?  My Hyper 48 is quite highly rated....
    5) Im completely new to SATA drives, but Ive printed off the very useful install guide on this site (which I intend to use).  Is there anything I need to look out for concerning adding my IDE drive also.
I think thats about it just now - if anyone can see any other potential problems with my specs then please let me know.  Im really not trying to be negative / pessimistic - after all the reason I have went for this motherboard is that it is rated as one of the best.  Im just a bit paranoid that the dreaded B.S.O.D awaits me!
On a more positive note - does anyone have similar system specs they use for gaming ?  How well does HL2 / Doom3 / Farcry etc fly J ? I cant wait !
    Thanks for the time

Everything is plugged into a Belkin Surgemaster powerbar.
I haven't mentioned the power supply. I'll get to that. I have been using an ANTEC NEOPOWER 480W POWER SUPPLY (ATX12V  DUAL 12V RAILS ACTIVE PFC W/ DETACHABLE OUTPUT CABLES) for about a year on this system without
any issues. One morning, I wake up, hit the power button on my coolermaster case, and nothing happens.
CPU fan won't even spin. Nothing happens.
    O.k., blown power supply, I think . . . .
So I take out my Antec and put it in another system. That system turns on
    without any problems.
    Hmm . . .
I come here, and I read posts about
potential compatibility issues with Antec power supplies. But if it's a compatibility
issue why was my system working for about a year?
    O.k., fine. I'll buy a Enermax 535W EG565P-VE FMA 24P (115/230 VAC) power supply.
I just plug it into the mainboard (nothing else). Hit the power button . . .
The CPU fan spins for half a second, and then nothing.
Did my motherboard just suddenly die for no reason?
    Any suggestions?

Pull the AC plug from PSU and set cmos in clear position with battery removed for atlest 20 minutes perhaps longer .
Then try to post the system barebone .
Just cpu,1 pcs memory in slot 1 , gfx card , and keyboard in PS2.
No usb devices at all including card reader and no pci cards harddisks or cdoms/dvd/floppy.
It could also be caused by a short or a malfunctioning fan connected to mobo.
Try to disconnect all case fans from mobo headers if you have any connected to additional fan holders.
The chipset fan can also be disconnected momentarily just to see if it posts.
If none of this helps , replace cmos battery and try again .

  • Reloading Windows XP on K8N Neo2 Platinum

Hello. I haven't been in this forum for quite a long time. I am refurbishing a computer I built in 2005, and need to reload Windows XP. This machine has a K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard. Processor is an Athlon 64 4000+ (single core). My bootable hardrive is an IDE (PATA). I also have 2 SATA drives for data. None are connected in RAID. I have already updated my BIOS from V1.B to V1.D (current).
I am trying to remember the process I went through 3 yrs ago to get Windows XP. Here are a few questions:
    1. Should I un-plug my 2 independent (non-bootable) SATA drives while I am doing the initial Windows XP install?
    2. Do I need to hit F6 and load drivers? If so, I assume I should get the latest storage drivers, rather than using the floppy that came with the Mobo. Or, do I need to load anything with F6, ie will the windows XP install recognize my single IDE drive? If I need to load any drivers, are there separate drivers for RAID vs non-RAID ?
    3. After getting Windows XP loaded, can I just run the MSI Live Update utility to get all of the remaining drivers updated? My BIOS is current (V1.D). Is there any reason I should go out to AMD or nVidia web sites to get drivers, or should MSI have all of the latest for this mobo?
    Any help appreciated,
    - bbdude

    1. Yep its recommended, when installation is done add them.
    2. No, do not load any drivers.
    3. Use drivers from MSI Web: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=587

There seem to be lines that appear across my video, and some 2D games such as Doom, Zsnes, and Worms world party.  They also seem to appear when certain colors are shown during playback of videos and games, (mostly the darks and blacks.)  3D games work FINE, (Half Life 2, Doom 3, Far Cry are perfect).  No errors what so ever.  I have also noticed that this happens also when the program is dependent on some DirectX resources.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled DX9 about 3 times, I have my latest Graphics drivers, I have my latest Windows Updates, I have the latest Mobo chipset drivers and such as well.  I have also installed Windows XP again.  I am not certain that this is a complete motherboard issue, as I do not have parts to switch out, but I am lost as to what I can do next.  I HAVE replaced the GPU with an older ATI Radeon 9000, and it still happens.  I highly doubt that the problem would lie within the CPU, but it's probable.   I have reseated all the parts in the computer, and checked over my motherboard to make sure there isn't any damage to it.  I am lost as to what I can do next though.
There is one thing I have noticed though, is if I go into my Display Properties and take the Hardware Acceleration tab down to "Disable all Direct 3D and Direct Draw Accelerations", the 2D programs work FINE.  But if it goes even one notch up, it goes back to the lines.  Anyone know what this could be related to??  Thank you for your help.

Before I had my 6800 GT, I was using the Radeon 9000, and I did use Driver Cleaner 3 to remove the Radeon driver.  I also used Driver Cleaner when I update the Nvidia drivers, and I've done this a few times as well.  I've tried using the Nvidia direct drivers (Current version), and I am currently using the PNY version of the Nvidia drivers, all the while using Driver cleaner to remove the old drivers before installing the new ones.  I have not tried any games or videos in safe mode though, I think I will do that.  I will get a screen shot of Doom if I can.   By the way, I am not certain what you mean by "Be sure to run the Nvidia option, not the Nforce option."
