  • Which SATA port on the K8N Neo2 Platinum?

Hi! I recently got a 160GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus hard drive, but I have read somewhere (i forgot where I read it) that two S-ATA ports on the K8N Neo2 Platinum will corrupt your hard drive data if you overclock. I dont know if this is still true (I have BIOS ver 1.8) but please could someone tell me which port I should connect my S-ATA drive to? (the only drive I have at the moment is a 160GB IDE drive). I dont want RAID. Thanks!

  • K8N NEO2 Platinum rebooting

Hi all, just got myself a 64bit MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum board & a 3200+,am happy with it but a couple of days ago i got a blue screen with a long message that i didnt have time to read before the pc rebooted, after the reboot i checked the event viewer log file in administrative tools/control panel but couldnt narrow it down as my particular error code wasnt among the possible causes.
Among some of the possible causes were incorrectly installed USB drivers or the BIOS,i downloaded the latest BIOS update before this problem started(V1.40) which i am using now,i used the MSI live update software to flash it which i did in windows mode.Sorry for prattling on!well it did it again tonight and i managed to read a bit of the writing on the blue screen which mentioned flashing the bios to the latest version.I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem and if so could you please advise me? My K8N Neo Platinum [754] did not include a NB fan. But this usually means the overall size of the heatsink is larger. If you remove the fan from yours, the size of the heatsink will not be big enough to cool your NB. As for temps, I've never seen my NB get hotter than 45'C. Note that the core on my NB should be slightly different than yours.
You could try to use the BIOS fan control for the NB. If set correctly, it should reduce some noise.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum slows down

    Hi,
I have a little problem with my new K8N Neo2 Platinum. I installed Windows XP and the newest nForce drivers but if I copy files over LAN (tested both LAN-Ports) or install big applications my music played with winamp slows down. It's played with half speed. In addition to that my mouse pointer is very slow. After the setup or copying files everything is how it should be again. How can I solve this problem?
    My system:
    AMD Athlon64 3500+ (Winchester)
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum-54G (tried different bios releases)
    1024MB Corsair XMS Twinx DDR500
    ATi Radeon 9800 Pro
    2 80GB Maxtor S-ATA (DMA Mode enabled)
Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! Player 5.1
    MorLipf

    Hello,
I copy files to my bro sometimes, 5Gb - all the steam GCF files for CS/HL/CSS/HL2.
    My network usage is 80%-92%
My CPU usage is always under 15%.
It is worse when using 512Mb but as you have 1Gb it shouldn't be bad.
Check in the device manager, your cd drives should be set to DMA mode.

  • K8N Neo2 platinum & 750g sata RAID issue

Hi there I have an issue with booting up. I have 1 200g Western digital HDD where windows is installed and I have 1 further 500g WD drive which were both fine until I decided to buy 2 samsung 750g HDD's to run in RAID. I have installed the drives in RAID and formatted but I am having a problem with booting.
If I reset, the computer keeps rebooting at the detection stage, powers off and keeps doing it over and over. Sometimes it will go through if you wait long enough. When I turn the power on and off it will go through the detection stage no worries every time but then at the XP loading screen it will freeze there. Sometimes it goes through and I will boot into XP fine and other times I can't get in.
I have the latest Bios 7025V1D but I am wondering if this issue is bios related because of the 750g size... The problem has only started since I have installed the two 750g HDD's in RAID. Does this bios version support 750g HDD's? Is there an updated BIOS to fix this problem somewhere?
I have 2gig of ram, 3500+ processor, latest Nforce3 drivers from Nvidia, RAID drives on sata ports/3/4, 500gig WD on sata port 1, 200 gig WD is HDD is IDE, Windows SP2 and all updated, ummmmmm everything else is fine I'm fairly sure.
I had a few troubles installing the RAID drivers because windows didn't want to accept the drivers I downloaded from here and did not want to accept the drivers in windows. I ended up getting it the drives to come on-line through the use of START/NVIDIA corp/ NVIDIA RAID program (cant remember the name, typing this on another computer).
Any ideas would be greatly and very muchly appreciated!
    Terry.

    Ok My PSU is: WideTECH 550w, +3.3v=33a, +5v=36a, +12v=25a, -12v=1.0a, +5vsb=2.5a.
I am only running 3 HDD's at the moment, the 2 750's and the 1 200gig. I have left the other 500gig unplugged until I get this problem sorted. I don't have a cd rom plugged in or a floppy. I only connect them when I need to because this computer is setup to be a storage server and I use my other pc for anything dvd related etc. The only other thing which is chewing power is the video card which is an old 6800gt ultra. So basically the power issue was fine until I installed the two extra HDD's and as I have unplugged the 500gig for the time being its only really one extra HDD which shouldn't be an issue. Oh I have two 80mm case fans using the psu aswell.
As for my other specs: I have 1 gig of Geil dual channel RAM 2x512 sticks, CPU=AMD Athlon64 3500+, MB is MSI K8n Neo2 Platinum, Vid card= Leadtek geforce 6800gt ultra 256 agp, You know about my HDD's but here they are again= 1x 200g WD caviar IDE, 1x 500g WD caviar sata(1 I think), 2 x 750g samsung sata (2 I think), OS = XP Home SP2 with all lasest automatic updates, latest BIOS etc etc etc....
My windows is a legit copy as well.
You mentioned putting my HDD's into sata 1 mode... I was of the opinion that my motherboard does not support sata2 anyway and would not allow them to run in anything but sata1?? If I did want to change the sata mode where would I do this anyway?
Thanks for your reply but I don't think it has to do with psu or sata mode although I'm interested about this sata2 thing, please explain.
    Thanks in advance,
    Terry.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum crashing/reboot in Windows....

After some minor problems with my systems (and almost a year since i did it last) i decided to do a clean install of Windows.
It all worked out well until i tried to deactivate the onboard Nvidia Gigabit LAN port. 1-2 seconds after hitting "deactivate" the computer reboots with no warning what so ever (like hitting the resetbutton). This happened EVERY time i did that. I had installed all the latest drivers for my GFX, Sound and MoBo. The MoBo drivers were the Nforce package from nvidia.com. I then downloaded the MoBo drivers from MSI's homepage and installed just the somewhat older drivers for the Nvidia Gigabit LAN. That fixed the problem with rebooting Windows.....
.....sort of. Now the computer reboots at random (either idle or working on something like photoshop) and has done so 4 or 5 times in the last week since i reinstalled Windows. I have never had this problem before.....
Could it be that i installed Nvidias own drivers instead of the MSI drivers ? I can't remember wich one i installed last time almost a year ago. I can't even remember if i ever updated them. If it ain't broke, why fix it ?
I have another problem thats not MSi related but how the hell do you uninstall the Creative Gameport ? I have unhooked it from my Audigy 2 soundcard but it still shows up in the devicemanager as a working device. Last time i installed windows i never got it to work (a known fact that the gameport isn't supported under Win XP). The strange thing is that this time it installed properly and seemed to be running before i unhooked it.....
If i don't get a working answer from this i will try reinstall Windows again....
    So...
What drivers should i use on my Mobo ? Nvidia or MSI ?

the gameport is on your soundcard, what you have unhooked is only the extension bracket (i guess). so as long as your soundcard is in the system, the gameport will show up in the device list. nothing wrong with that one. instead of uninstalling it, just disable it from the device list.
i like to use mobo manufacturer's driver over the chipset maker because technically, MSI will release the drivers after they do some testing with them.

  • K8N-Neo2 Platinum pauses for 25 sec at boot, nvatabus.sys the problem?

    All,
After POSTing normally and starting to load Windows XP, my system halts at the Windows XP splash screen for about 25 seconds. Nothing happens, no disk activity or anything, the system just sits there.
I used Microsoft's Bootvis utility to see what was happening. It turns out that the nvatabus.sys driver consumes 100% CPU at boot for 25 seconds then the system continues to boot normally. Does anyone else see anything like this?
I am running the latest nForce drivers from MSI. The driver in question:
NVIDIA nForce3 Serial ATA Controller 2.6
    Driver Date 6/3/2004
    c:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\nvatabus.sys 5.10.2600.0446
    Windows XP SP1
I have a RAID1 of two 160 GB SATA drives. The mirror is healthy and working fine.
After booting the system is rock-solid stable, no problems there. It's just this unexplained pause at boot. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

ok check it out guy's this thing drove me insane all night last night and most of today. I was ready to return everything and give up. But alas all is not lost. Here is the rundown on what i just did.
    My Equipment:
    Athlon 64 3800+(w/ stock fan)
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Socket 939
    2X512 Corsair TWINX1024-3200XLPRO ( with the cool led's )
    2 SATA HD (1 Maxtor Diamond10 300 GB w/ 16mb cache, 1 Segate 160GB w/8mb cache)
    PP&C 425 ATX Deluxe
    Radeon 9700 Pro ( cat 4.8 )
    Audigy2 ZS
    Sony Floppy
    Sony 8x52x52x32 DVD Rewrite
I have been reading and reading just like all you guy's. On a few websites i would pick up bits and pieces on what to try. Heres what i did. Upon Boot up i entered the bios. I then went to Cell Soft and adjusted my timings for my memory. I was at 2.5 not 2.75. I then set my speed down to 166. Exited and restarted. Big mistake everything ri=uns terrible slow and my expensive DDR 400 memory was showing up correctly at 333. Rebooted again entered the bios. reset my speed to 400. Then set the Overclock feature to manual. Set my timings at 2,2,5,2 200 and 2.75 volts. After saving settings and exiting I then turned off the computer. As per some other suggestions I moved my Audigy2 to the bottom most pci slot the one above the orange slot. I moved my memory to slots 2 and 4. I moved my SATA to slots 3 and 4. I rebooted went into the bios again and setup all my voltages. CPU was Auto, AGP was max yellow setting. Memory still at 2.75. I disabled the onboard serial and parrallel ports. Rebooted
    Fearing the worst,
5 seconds, 10 seconds, windows screen loging prompt. There was nothing wrong at all. It rebooted effortlessly. It re found my Audigy card and wanted driver but that was it. I am going to reboot a few more times and then run sisandra to test. I hope some of this will help you. I post in a few after some of those reboots.

  • The build in firewall in MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum

    Hello everyone,
I am using an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum-54G nForce3. I wonder if anyone else is using the built in firewall? I have some problems with my Internet connection and I think it is firewall related.
I would like to know if anyone else has any valuable feedback on this subject.
    Thank you!

Works fine for me, make sure you have the latest drivers installed and turn off any other firewall including the Windows one. You will find that you may have to set up some rules to open up ports for some apps. I have set mine up to play Farcry and now get no Punkbuster problems.
I am using the Nvidia ethernet to connect toe the internet and the Realtek to network my second PC.

  • Reboot problem with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and 250 GB SATA HDD

I'm having a "reboot" problem with my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. After turning my system on it will run without any problems, until I reboot. After a reboot it will always hang after the initial windows-bootscreen. The HDD-light will remain on. If, instead of going into Windows XP SP2, I try to enter the BIOS after a reboot (DEL) the system will also hang (blank screen with blinking cursor).
It started doing this after I installed the Maxtor 250 GB SATA disk. Before, I didn't have problems rebooting. If I disconnect the Maxtor drive I can reboot and enter BIOS and Windows each and every time. Reconnecting the Maxtor 250 GB SATA drive will return the reboot problem. I always have to use the power swith to get a working system again. It's not enough to do a hard reset (this has the same effect as rebooting).
Here are the details of my system:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (BIOS 1.B)
    Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester, 2 Ghz, 512 KB cache, stepping DH-D0)
    2 x Kingston KVR400X64C25/512, 512 MB, DDR, PC3200 (2,5-3-3-8 T1)
Asus Radeon AX800 Pro (256 MB)
    PSU Antec Sonata 380W
HDD Maxtor 80Gb ATA (6Y080P0, Pri Master)
    HDD Seagate 250Gb SATA (ST3200822AS)
HDD Maxtor 250Gb SATA (6V250F0 - jumpered in SATA150 mode, the mobo wouldn't work with the drive in SATA300-mode)
Aopen COM5232/AAH Pro CD-Writer ATA (Sec Master)
BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer ATA (Sec Slave)
P.S. The NVidia IDE-drivers are NOT installed. System is not overclocked.

Thank you for all the replies. Upgrading to the latest Nvidia IDE-drivers did not fix my problem. Moving to other SATA-ports did not help either. Upgrading the mobo's BIOS is not really an option (I'm using one version before the most recent and there isn't anything in the fixlist of the latest BIOS).
Now I've contacted Maxtor for (hopefully) a new firmware.

  • K8N NEO2 PLATINUM ATA-133 Raid ?

    Hello,
My question is, is it possible to setup an Ata-133 raid on the K8N NEO2 PLATINUM (as the main boot drive). Currently I have 2 ata-133 drives and I want to upgrade to this board. I looked at the PDF manual and read the forums, but people usally talk about thier Sata drives.
If it is possible to have only a Ata-133 raid setup. How/what is the best way to set it up since there is only a primary and secondary ATA connection on the motherboard.  Setup a master / slave on the primary 1 slot ? or put them on thier own channel ?  Note, I read somewhere that optical drives ( cdroms,...) may have a problem if they share the channel with a harddrive that is raided. So thats my dilema.
      Thanks in advanced,
                Jim

    jim,
did you ever get the RAID setup to work with the IDE drives?
i was trying to connect 2 ata100 drives on the IDE2 or IDE3 ports and the bios will not seem to detect them at all,
but the RAID controller DOES detect them.
however, it will try to boot from the master drive but restarts at the windows XP splash screen, every time.
    -brian
Right. If we connect two IDE HDDs on one IDE1 or IDE 2 (as Master & Slave), and plan to set up RAID.Take IDE1 for example, as long as we set up Integrated Peripherals-->Onboard Device-->RAID Config-->IDE Primary Master&Secondary RAID-->Enabled, Save&exit setup; enter RAID bios to set RAID mode, all things would be ok. But if we want to install OS in this RAID, we must press F6 install RAID driver at the beginning of OS installation. If we only use them as normal storage, OS is in other HDD, we should install RAID driver in OS.
Besides, the two HDDs could not appear in Standard CMOS Features any more, which appear in RAID BIOS.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum - SATA1/SATA2

I've seen some concerns on the forums about SATA1/SATA2 not being stable on this board.  Is this still a valid concern if I do not overclock my machine? I plan on using a 300GB SATA Seagate on SATA1 as a drive where I will store my backups.  I'll use an external USB 2.0 cabinet for the 300GB SATA drive if reliability is going to be a problem.

I think all you said is very odd  as i've succeeded in o/cing my 3800+ x2 at 10 x 233 whereas i plugged my Western Digital serial ata Hdd on serial port 1, and i'm not running any instability pbs or overheats, am i lucky or is it due to the latest official bios version ??
Then how long have you OCED it? but be aware then you might screwed it out but just in matters of time.
I agreed with Syar's explanations as ocing the system at that range may caused instability. However, I do experience on my own as I did screwed my HDD SATA WD where I've OCed at 225-230 my HDD is totally burn due to the OCing.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum - RAID Array Causes CPU Spikes!

I got my RAID array set up.
When I transfer files to it, my CPU usage (kernerl level) shoot up.  It's around 100%, and it slows my system way down.
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum.
RAID 0 using SATA ports 3 and 4.
I'm transferring files from my current windows installation to partitions on the raid array, so I can install windows on the array after removing the old drives.
I can transfer data fine, but using the array causes huge cpu usage which slows the rest of my system down a LOT.

Which SATA / Raid Driver did you install ? The ones from the nforce driver package provided by nvidia, or the original MSI driver ?
    Go here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=607&kind=1
And download and install the SATA RAID Driver, make a backup of your Data first.

Well, I have seen this post and it makes me wonder what are the differences between nforce chipset driver packages and the MSI ones if any? Thanks in advance.

  • PS2 mouse with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum

Me and my uncle both have MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboards and both boards were bought from different places at different times. Both boards are exactly the same and both have the latest 1.4 BIOS.
We're both having the same problem with ps2 mice, I myself am not bothered about this problem but my uncle is so I need help.
Basically when you insert a ps2 mouse into the back of both our pcs, 7 times out of 10 the pc loads windows but the mouse doesnt move. The mouse is completely frozen. When you plug a usb mouse in, i can use that but still the ps2 mouse doesnt move.
When you plug in a ps2 keyboard along with the ps2 mouse, the mouse works everything time but without the ps2 keyboard in, most times the ps2 mouse doesnt work.
We both have no problems with usb devices but the ps2 mouse port (Green) isnt working all the time.
Having a quick look at this forum, i saw this thread.. PS/2 mouse not working exact same problem as me and my uncle.... is there a fix out now for this?
I use a usb mouse anyway and i know if my uncle switches to usb it will work but he shouldnt have to do this, if a board has ps2 support, it should work.

Two choices. USB Mouse or RMA it
    What does RMA it mean?

The PS/2 ports on any computer can get blown if you plug a PS/2 device when the computer is powered.
I didnt know that, thanks for telling me, i know not to do this in the future.

Other than that, check BIOS to see if PS/2 option is enabled!
If ps/2 wasnt enabled in the BIOS, the ps2 devices wouldnt work at all would they? My ps2 keyboard works fine, my uncles ps2 mouse doesnt work sometimes so ps2 must be enabled in the bios.
thanks for the replies, could this be fixed if MSI knew this problem and release a new bios?

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum; ethernet probs!?

    Hey guys,
I'm having problems getting my DSL hooked up to my new PC. I'm using a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum, and according to my ISP phone-tech, the problem is with my "NIC".??
When examining the back of the PC, the slot where my ethernet cord is connected is green accompanied by yellow blinking. All lights on the Speedstream 5100 modem itself are green... No probs in the device manager... Switched ethernet cable from top to bottom port... Flahsed/Updated my BIOS from ver1.5 to ver1.8... Still have blinking yellow light... unable to connect to the internet on my new PC.
(Blinking light appears on both (top & bottom) ethernet ports when i have it plugged in)
Can someone point me in the direction of what to do / which drivers i need to install/uninstall...!?
    Need help... Any is welcome.
    The PC: Athlon 3500+ / 1 GB RAM / 80GB SATA WD / 250 GB 16M Cache IDE Maxtor / Geforce 6800GT / MSI K8N Nforce 2 Platinum

Doh, i seem to have taken a few step backwards...!
I returned the modem for another (brand = 2-wire gateway)... Still unable to connect; problems are similar, but let me tell you....
I have uninstalled all nvidia drivers --- went back to the drivers on CD.   In Device Manager all devices are OK.  I have both the nvidia LAN & MAC LAN ports enabled.  Everything seems to be default settings (exception: i disabled windows firewall).  Also I did not install nvidia FIREWALL option during install.
I plug in new modem... it boots, but middle light (broadband link light) is solid orange.  According to the 2-wire site/faq
    --- Broadband Link light ---
Solid orange - The HomePortal has established a physical broadband connection but was not able to successfully connect to your Internet Service Provider, or has not yet been configured. (can't PPPoE login. Username/Password failure or the other end is fubared.)
With this set-up; i am unable to run REPAIR on nvidia LAN connection (unable to restore IP); under the nvidia connection details: packets are being sent, but none recieved...
Ok, now get this.... I plug ethernet cord into the MAC LAN port; go to Network Connections; packets are being sent/recieved  //// I am able to repair the connection.... yet the broadband link light = solid orange still!!
Next, I use the USB connection for the new modem, it asks for software/drivers... place install CD in... all lights = green... I AM able to connect!!!!!!!
probably, problem was i didn't load software from CD with the ethernet connection goin... !? (me = idiot !)
I'm gonna reinstall WinXP now... and hope to duplicate results, but on the ethernet wire (running SBC software)... if all else fails, i'll just prob set up the USB set-up..!
    Thanks for your patience fellas...

  • Question about K8N Neo2 Platinum mainboard.

About a couple of weeks ago I found that none of the USB ports of the K8N Neo2 Platinum mainboard are working correctly. Every time I plug a USB device I get the following error message:
    "USB Device Not Recognized.
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."
Because of this, I found that there's a device in the Device Manager called:
Under SCSI and RAID Controllers section:
      + AUL14T9L IDE Controller
The question is for the ones having this same motherboard:
Do you see this device as well?.
    Thank you very much!

Think you might try to clear CMOS.
I did it twice this week.
First time I left clearing the CMOS all night. The problem was not fixed.
Second time I left clearing the CMOS all night and I removed the battery as well. All night too. No luck

But first please say what BIOS you got now
The most updated one: 1.0D. Should I try 1.B?

About the unknown device, are motherboard drivers installed? Is there some USB or other devices attached you haven't mentioned?
I installed the motherboard drivers downloaded from the MSI web site:
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=587
They are the NVIDIA nForce3 System Drivers:
Win2K/XP driver package 5.03 contains the below components:
Ethernet NRM driver version 4.42 (WHQL)
    Network management tools version 4.42
GART driver version 3.77 (WHQL) with updated uninstaller files
SMBus driver version 4.04 (WHQL) with updated uninstaller files
Win2K IDE 2.6 driver version 4.46 (WHQL) with updated uninstaller files
WinXP IDE 2.6 driver version 4.46 (WHQL) with updated uninstaller files
And believe me. Nothing is attached to USB ports.
