K8N Neo2 Platinum = Dead Board?

I hope that you folks could help me.  I have built about 100 computers between personal and professional lives.
This unit is about to hit a wall at warp speed or will be RMA'ed, or you can help me find out what I am doing wrong.
Check my sig for my specs. I can't install windows xp on this unit.  It almost always locks up when I am down to 3 to 9 minutes remaining in "saving settings"  I did get it to install once  but it locked up while installing SP1 and then it would not boot again. Repair install failed as well.  Could not even get into safe mode.  Last good configuration does not work either.
I have tried  swapping power supplies to no avail  Seems like a poorly designed product if it is that finicky with standard power supplies.  Newegg won't return it.  Finally hunted down a tech support number  for MSI and the techs could not understand english.  anyone got a number for english speaking tech support?
I have tried installing windows on this close to 20 times and cannot get it going.  I have tried various settings  for memory and cpu and tried even the lowest settings.   and event had to reset cmos more that once.  Shesh.  I should have gone with an EPOX! Could someone please prove me wrong about this board?

Thanks Shanks,
But its D E A D.    Fans (including CPU) come on for 2 seconds, then shut off.  You have to unplug the power to even attempt again.  Went out and bought MADDOG 500W PSU ($99 USD) with 30A on +12V Rail and same results.
Unplugged all drives. Same Result.
Remove All Cards.  Same Result.
Removed board, Checked for Shorts or incorrect standoffs, Same Result.
Reset CMOS, Put MB with only CPU and Ram on piece of cardboard, Same Result.
MB by itself, stripped naked on cardboard with just PSU in 20 pin and 4 pin,  Same Result.
Its Dead Jim!  Its officially a dud.   10 hours of work on this. The most out of over 100 computers/servers built.
This bested an A+ Computer tech/Systems Engineer know for resurrecting "Dead" systems.
The originally PSU (Antec 400) is still working, actually powering my old EPOX 8rda+/Barton 2500  so that I can write this posting.
I'm suspecting Dendrite growth in the board causing a short or an NG component.  Actually while looking at the bottom of the PCB, I' noticing that the Masking is matted as if it a lot of masking was put on by a roller and not from the original process.
This may have been a repaired PCB in the first place.
Newegg states that the this board is warranted by the manufacturer only.  They got their $149
Posted review on this board regarding the +12V rail issues and reminding potential buyers about Newegg's "Warranted by Manufacturer only" and gave it 2 stars.  Lets see if NewEgg will post it.
Thanks for you help,  gonna RMA this before I am tempted to test its aerodynamic qualities as a "frisbee"

  • K8N NEO2 Platinum Dead once again

This is my second K8N NEO2 that dies!!!! What is going on at MSI I mean what are the odds? Both boards have worked fine in about 3 days but for some reason just died on the fourth day.
I RMA the first one and talked with the store where I bought it and they said the board was totally dead so they sended me a new one. Now this one died so I will send this one back and take my money back. Is there anyone that have experienced this problem?
BTW my PSU is an Antec TruePower 430W and yes I know that it has a weak 12V line but what kind of board needs more than 20A? And if the PSU is to weak as some say, how can the board be killed by the PSU? I have also tested the PSU and it's nothing wrong with it.

    crar,
The short answers to your questions are no and no .  The reason being that the board flexs all the time while it is in the case.  It also heats up and expands unevenly causing uneven flexing.  It might just be that the metal piece hasn't hit the right spot to cause a short and that over several days the odds are much higher that it will.  You may never have noticed on your previouos board because there may not have been anything shortable near the metal piece.
A UPS is fairly effective at blocking AC line transients.  It is a good idea to have one regardless of whether the power in your area is poor or not, but a necessity if it is.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum dead??

I just built my new computer a few days ago, and had been struggling with video card problems. Not 5 minutes after I finally get everythihng fixed (bios setting problem), I was playing farcry, and the computer just drops. I try powering it back on, and nothing. The fans kick on for about 1/2 second, and they are off again. Not even enough for the D-link to tell me what is wrong.
So, I try unplugging it and plugging it back in. Nothing, same problem. I reset the BIOS, same problem. Disconnect everything except the CPU (RAM, HD's, vid card, etc), same problem.
The kicker is when I remove my CPU, the motherboard starts up fine (fans comes on, all seems happy, short of the missing CPU). If I reinstall the CPU, everything is essentially dead again.
This is REALLY annoying, considering the time I spent trying to get the vid card working. Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks!

PSU is a 550W coolmax. I know it isn't the PSU because I tried different PSU's and got the same result (I forgot to mention that).
As far as overclocking, I wasn't. I turned all of that off (that was part of what was causing problems with my video card).

I also have the same board I installed an athlon 64 x2 4600 updated bios to 1.C ran the hotfix , new drivers for the x2 . Runs stable when benchmarking but shuts down when intensive cpu load is used like BF2 gaming or burning dvd/cd's , any ideas ?
Maybe that your RAM is the problem as you've the mixed RAM and also their timing and the volt are also different. Tried to boot with those same timing and latency as well as the Volt.  have you tried to run Prime 95 for the CPU benchmarking? Does it stabile? Gd luck.

  • Need help with k8n neo2 platinum

I've just installed a new k8n neo2 platinum s939 board with a venice core 3200+ cpu the htt is 2000 and multiplier 10x.
I've gone to the core cell menu and set the htt to 4x (seemed to be this at default) and the max mem clock at 166 (more about this in a moment), the fsb will go quite easily up to 250mhz even 255mhz, but when I try 260 Mhz the machine when it reboots shows the initial slash screen but then goes to a blank screen with the cursor flashing in the top left hand corner, I can't even get back into the bios setup without clearing the cmos.
The odd thing is that the adjust cpu vid is showing a voltage of 1.50 and not 1.40 or startup.
Anyway with the fsb at 250mhz the bios screen is showing the Current ddr clock at 208 mhz ( not the max memclock setting of 166) the memory in the motherboard ( a crucial 512meg ddr333 single stick) seems to perform OK according to memtest which shows no errors after 2 cycles.
Any attempt to get to 260mhz fsb appears to fail even by upping the cpu vid to 1.525v unless i adjust the cpu voltage setting which by default is set to (by cpu vid) to +3.3%. Doing this enables me to get to fsb 260mhz but the memtest fails ( even when I set the max memclock to 133, which shows my current ddr speed at 174mhz, well below the 208mhz which appeared stable with the fsb at 250mhz?)
So firstly why are there two cpu voltage settings in the bios when my manual only shows 1 (there is no mention of this cpu vid setting?
How is it that my memory is stable at 208mhz with a fsb of 255mhz but unstable at 174mhz with the fsb set at 260mhz?
Why does the memory clock lock not appear to be working, the memory should be fixed at 166mhz but infact increases with fsb?
    I have bios revision 1.5.
Please help as I am not familiar with the bios settings for this nforce 3 chipset, they seem rather odd to me. I'm sure my venice core 3200+ cpu can get beyond 250mhz fsb, I have another pc with a venice core 3000+ cpu which runs quite happily at 270mhz fsb.
PS I've tried reducing the htt to 3x but the same thing happens.

OK further feed back, I can get to over 260mhz fsb but the system is not stable the memory runs OK with mem test but I have problems with prime95.
I had to up the cpu core voltage to 1.53v to get to 260mhz using the cpu voltage setting in the bios and setting a 5% increase. increasing the cpu vid setting to 1.55v did not seem to do anything at all the core voltage was still at 1.43v.
I upped the mem voltage to 2.6v from 2.5 but still could not get the system to be stable, it may be that the memory is holding the system back but I don't want to pay for better memory at the moment. Unless anyone has got any other ideas it looks like I may be forced to settle with 250mhz, well still a 500mhz increase maybe not that bad. I've now to try 3d benchmarking using my radeon 9600xt and 3dmark 03.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum is dead?!?

    Hi all!
I've got a problem with my computer. After sending it to Standby, it wouldn't start again. AT ALL! There is nothing happening when I press the power button, even after disconnecting the power. Just the Power-LED is on, everything else stays quiet. No fans, no harddrives, no beeps...
I already tried another power supply, didn't help. I also unmounted everything from my mobo except the CPU, but still no result. It just won't do anything. ??? If it would at least tell my something with some error codes from the speaker or the D-Bracket...
Has somebody got any clue what is happening?
    System:
    K8N Neo2 Platinum
    A64 3200+ Venice E6
    4x512 MB Corsair VS
    ATI R9800 Pro
    I would really appreciate help!

Well, I'm gonna. Doesn't leave me much choice, but first I will test my CPU on someone elses board.
    Nice illustration
Since I have to swap my mobo, I will upgrade to an nForce4 anyway and get a new graphics card (actually I ordered already ).
Then I have to get a new PSU anyway.
However since I cannot do this within the next 3 weeks, I am still trying to get my system running.
Well, if you have a mobo to try the CPU in, great, that's a good way to rule that out. If I had that option available, I would lean towards just swapping out the board since I am already going to have both machines basically torn apart. I usually don't swap CPU's without taking the whole board out of the case and POST testing it before mounting. I think that would tell me more than just taking my CPU out and putting it in another machine...but that's me.
The 939 & 754 sockets are much easier to deal with as opposed to the Socket A when the board is still mounted. I've seen bad things happen by not having the right angles and room to work in...
It all really depends on your scenario and what's available to you. Sometimes we are limited in our options since we don't have an inventory as enthusiasts opposed to a system builder. Not to mention the hassle of bringing your gear somewhere or having a friend bringing theirs to you.
Just remember if you are using a different chipset, not to let it try and boot to the OS. Really, all you need to do is see if will POST.
That metaphor is my favorite and gets the point across rather well

  • New K8N Neo2 Platinum, AMD 64 3500+ sytem freezing

I have posted to a couple of forums and still can't get this problem resolved, hope you guys can help.
I put together a new system last Friday night and spent all weekend trying to fix it. I ended up with 2 bad power supplies, one fresh from the store was dead, but got that resolved. Got the system up and running, got online, surfing and FREEZE..everything stopped.  Rebooted, 5 minutes later, same thing, over and over again.
Tried checking memory, it's fine, both sticks, power supply is fine, everything seems to be running fine except it keeps freezing after about 5 minutes.
I wonder if it's a bad board, so I tried to RMA it with the vendor and they want me to try outside the case to see if it won't freeze there, haven't had the time yet cause I'm working, will try that tonight.
Also, one guy on a different board suggested that I try a fresh install of windows xp as the old drivers might be interfering with the new drivers. I will try that tonight also.
If anyone can give me any other suggestions, I would appreciate it. If I can't get this resolved, I'm going to send back the board for a new one.
    Below are my specs:
    AMD 64 3500+
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo
    2 x 512 Kingston ddr400 (pc3200)
    antec true power 480
wd 120gb hd, wd 80gb hd
    cdrw generic, dvdrw generic
    bfg 6800 oc video card
    thanks

Thank you both for your posts, they are both informative and I will be using your information Friday night. I'm just so tired after work, I don't want to get part way into it and have to leave it for the next day, I have to get up at 3am everyday and get home around 6-7pm and I'm beat!
So, Friday after work, I'm going to start with just the basics and go from there, using all the information I've been getting from this board and a couple of others. Seems like the best thing to do is, start with barebones, reset cmos, reset battery and install fresh windows os.
I will post Friday after I start and hopfully I will get this problem  fixed.
    thanks again

  • K8N NEO2 Platinum rebooting

Hi all, just got myself a 64bit MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum board & a 3200+,am happy with it but a couple of days ago i got a blue screen with a long message that i didnt have time to read before the pc rebooted, after the reboot i checked the event viewer log file in administrative tools/control panel but couldnt narrow it down as my particular error code wasnt among the possible causes.
Among some of the possible causes were incorrectly installed USB drivers or the BIOS,i downloaded the latest BIOS update before this problem started(V1.40) which i am using now,i used the MSI live update software to flash it which i did in windows mode.Sorry for prattling on!well it did it again tonight and i managed to read a bit of the writing on the blue screen which mentioned flashing the bios to the latest version.I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem and if so could you please advise me? My K8N Neo Platinum [754] did not include a NB fan. But this usually means the overall size of the heatsink is larger. If you remove the fan from yours, the size of the heatsink will not be big enough to cool your NB. As for temps, I've never seen my NB get hotter than 45'C. Note that the core on my NB should be slightly different than yours.
You could try to use the BIOS fan control for the NB. If set correctly, it should reduce some noise.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum Ordered - Advice for a noob please

    Hi there,
this seems like a great forum, was hoping someone could give me some advice - Im trying to pre-empt any major probs....
I am a relative noob to building P.C's - done a few P4 based systems before but this will be my first Athlon based.  This systems primary use will be gaming.  I have the following on order (should be with me next week) : -
    a) MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum Edition SCK 939 Motherboad
    b) AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ 64bit SCK 939 Retail Inc Fan
    c) 160GB Maxtor Calypso 8mb Cache 7200 SATA DHH
    Components I have already
    a) Graphics Card - Nvidia 6800 GT
    b) Memory - Generic 2 X 512MB PC2700 DDR333 RAM
    c) Sound Card - Creative SB Live Value
    d) PSU - Jeantech 450W (22a on 12V Rail)
    e) Case - pretty generic full tower case - no fans attached
    f) CPU FAN - COOLERMASTER HYPER 48 SUPER SILENT HEATPIPE
    g) Spare Hard drive - 120GB Maxtor IDE Hard drive
    h) DVD Drives - 1 x Pioneeer 108 / 1 x Pioneer 104
    I) Monitors - Ilyama 17" TFT & Toshiba 32WL36P LCD
I have some 'noobish' questions - apologies for my ignorance : -
    1) Memory - Will my memory be okay ?  Should I ditch it and buy some Corsair DDR400 (which everyone else seems to have!).  Will performance suffer if I stick with the DDR 333 ? Do I need to adjust settings in BIOS regarding memory timing ? (I only picked up on this from reading through other posts on this board, and am totally clueless on 'timing'- Ive never needed to adjust timing on any previous PC's....!)
    2) Sound Card - will I be better off sticking with the onboard sound on the MSI K8N neo 2 ? Or for best performance do I go with the SB LIve ? (god its a nightmare trying to get updated drivers for this card),  Would I get a noticable performance increase buying an Audigy 2?
    3) Vcore / other power issues - Reading this forum Im kinda scared by many posts along the lines of "..for stability I need to change my memory voltage to xx-V" or "...for a stable system I needed to change my Vcore to xx-V".  Will I need to change the Bios default values on this system just to get it to run stably??
    4) CPU FAN - Are AMD stock fans any good ?  My Hyper 48 is quite highly rated....
    5) Im completely new to SATA drives, but Ive printed off the very useful install guide on this site (which I intend to use).  Is there anything I need to look out for concerning adding my IDE drive also.
I think thats about it just now - if anyone can see any other potential problems with my specs then please let me know.  Im really not trying to be negative / pessimistic - after all the reason I have went for this motherboard is that it is rated as one of the best.  Im just a bit paranoid that the dreaded B.S.O.D awaits me!
On a more positive note - does anyone have similar system specs they use for gaming ?  How well does HL2 / Doom3 / Farcry etc fly J ? I cant wait !
    Thanks for the time

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum wont start up

After installing a new K8N Neo2 it worked perfectly for 1 day, no problems at all.
The day after nothing happened. When the psu is turned on it only gives a short flash on the leds, the fans turns for a second and then everything is of.
Have tried with only the most necessary connected to the psu, switched to only 1 RAM in different positions etc. Have cleared cmos every time.
D bracket leds are showing 4 reds for a short second and some times two greens diagonal upper left to lower right and the other two are red.
    Any ideas???

  • Prevent usb mouse starting pc from standby ( k8n Neo2 platinum )

I have a k8n neo2 platinum board and i have 2 mice connected, 1 is ps2 the other usb. What i want to do is stop the usb mouse starting the pc from standby, i looked in the bios but cant seem to find anyway to do this. Its a real pain, if the unit the pc is on is nudged by the chair or if someone pics something up and nudges the mouse the pc starts. Sometimes this happens of a night when ive gone to bed, i come down the next morning and the pc,s running. Its quite a quiet pc so if the tv,s on you dont always hear it start-up.

Ive just tried your suggestion now TheBigMan, i disabled everything and still the pc starts from the usb mouse. I have never known such messing about shutting down and starting up a pc. I really am starting to wish i had bought an asus board instead. Thanks for your input.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum - satisfied except cold boot

My new build is doing well except for the near-famous cold-boot problem. When the box has been off for a while, I hit the power button, fans & drives spin up, the optical blinks a couple times, but no video or POST. The LEDs look like 4 green, but 2 seem dimmer, as if they're just reflecting the light from the other 2. A 5-second hiit on the power button shuts it down, hit it again and it fires right up, but stops during post with the message that it's in safe mode and to reset my (nonexistent) OCs. From this point I can F1, boot up, and run for hours. No probs unless it's off for a while. I have seen the problem since early in the build, when I powered up outside the case with just 1 stick of RAM and the LEDs (no vid or drives).
Searching the board shows a lot of people having the problem, but nobody seems to have a solution, so I went to the support site to check the knowledge-base and FAQs. Interesting to find there that A64 boards do not appear to exist. No FAQ, no option to spec socket 939 or 754 to search the KB.
Maybe if we get a number of us with the problem to post specs & observations in one thread we can spot a pattern?
I have noted that I can't just do an on-off-on. It has to spend 20-30 seconds in the lockup mode before cycling the power results in a successful boot.
BTW all, some really nice things are happening with RAM prices lately. I got my 2 gigs for US$190 delivered.

I'll give the bios a shot, but the idea of using the HT to slow the box down and then speeding it back up again in Winders...
Putting HT to 4 does not slow down the box... Especially if ur FSB is over 200 (if ur overclocking) like in my case: FSB=260mhz, I must put down the HT to 4 in order to run everything perfect. HT standard is 200x5=1000, in my case its 260x4=1040... as long as HT is between 800-1200... I believe there is no real time performance loss as long as u have STABILITY. I have seen a lotta people in this forum fixing stability problems just by reducing the HT when they overclocking... some cases even to HT=3.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum Checksum Error

Hi, I apologize if I break any rules here, but I tried to use the search option to locate an answer but couldn't find anything that helped me fully.
My problem is that when I try to turn on my computer, I get a message saying:
    "Award Bootblock BIOS v1.0
    Copyright 2000 Award Software Inc.
    BIOS ROM checksum error
Keyboard error or no keyboard present.
    Detecting floppy drive A media
INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER".
Except this, my computer is completely "dead", I cannot go anywhere. From what I have understood, my BIOS is corrupted, and I need to flash it. This should be done by inserting a boot floppy with added AWDFLASH.exe and a bios.bin. The thing is, I don't know how to find these files, or at least the correct ones. I have also tried to google for a solution, but haven't found anything satisfactionary. So this is kind of my last resort. I am very sorry if this is a newbie question, but I have almost no experience in this advanced (from my perspective) knowledge.
If someone could help me locate the correct verisons of the Award Flash utility and BIOS file, and write a short step by step-walkthrough of how to proceed, you would have my eternal gratitude.
My system is a 4 years old:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum 54G S939 with nForce 3 Ultra
    Windows XP Home
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 Ghz
Gainward GeForce 7800 GS 512 Mb
    2x TwinMos 512 Mb RAM PC3200
    Maxtor Diamondmax 200 Gb SATA
MS-7025 Ver: 1 is printed on the motherboard.

This one is stuck in Award bootblock mode, will most likely need a re-flash from a bootable floppy disk.
Make a bootable floppy disk, in e.g WinXP.
Make a file with notepad, containing this line:
    AWFL833D.EXE W7025NMS.1D0 /CC /CD /CP /QI /R /PY /SN
Save this file on this floppy by the name Autoexec.bat
Also add the two files AWFL833D.EXE and W7025NMS.1D0 on this floppy.
Power up the K8N Neo2 Plat. with this disk in the floppy drive. The flashing will begin, let it finish.
Remove floppy and reboot. If it  succeeded, set all relevant values in BIOS and save&exit.

Not always, the same fake error message can came from bad memory stick too.
Also he didn't flash his BIOS before the message to appear.

  • Difference between K8N Neo2 Platinum & K8N Neo2-F

Can anyone help to clear up what exactly is the difference between these two motherboards?  I have the features page printed out and compared them side by side, but I don't see any difference.  I understand that the K8N Neo2 Platinum has been on the market for a while, and the K8N Neo2-F is new.  Any help is much appreciated.
Here are the links to both of them:
    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo2_Platinum&class=mb
    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo2-F&class=mb

My Neo2 Platinum was the 54g version with a PCI 802.11b/g card and it seems that for some reason these boards have better power regulation than the standard Plat (at least the early models) as I have not had all the problems (PS/2, PCI, etc) some have had.  And I have a Canon Digital Camcorder which only uses Firewire to output to PC.

  • K8N NEO2 PLATINUM ATA-133 Raid ?

    Hello,
My question is, is it possible to setup an Ata-133 raid on the K8N NEO2 PLATINUM (as the main boot drive). Currently I have 2 ata-133 drives and I want to upgrade to this board. I looked at the PDF manual and read the forums, but people usally talk about thier Sata drives.
If it is possible to have only a Ata-133 raid setup. How/what is the best way to set it up since there is only a primary and secondary ATA connection on the motherboard.  Setup a master / slave on the primary 1 slot ? or put them on thier own channel ?  Note, I read somewhere that optical drives ( cdroms,...) may have a problem if they share the channel with a harddrive that is raided. So thats my dilema.
      Thanks in advanced,
                Jim

    jim,
did you ever get the RAID setup to work with the IDE drives?
i was trying to connect 2 ata100 drives on the IDE2 or IDE3 ports and the bios will not seem to detect them at all,
but the RAID controller DOES detect them.
however, it will try to boot from the master drive but restarts at the windows XP splash screen, every time.

Right. If we connect two IDE HDDs on one IDE1 or IDE 2 (as Master & Slave), and plan to set up RAID.Take IDE1 for example, as long as we set up Integrated Peripherals-->Onboard Device-->RAID Config-->IDE Primary Master&Secondary RAID-->Enabled, Save&exit setup; enter RAID bios to set RAID mode, all things would be ok. But if we want to install OS in this RAID, we must press F6 install RAID driver at the beginning of OS installation. If we only use them as normal storage, OS is in other HDD, we should install RAID driver in OS.
Besides, the two HDDs could not appear in Standard CMOS Features any more, which appear in RAID BIOS.
