K8N Neo2 Platinum (Zalman 7700AlCu install - PLEASE HELP!)

Hello,
I know that the Zalman web page lists the 7700 as incompatible with the Neo2 Platinum board.  I've also read the past threads here about installation of the Zalman coolers, and I know that some people have made it work.  I'm just wondering HOW?
Originally, the guy who built my computer had the 7700 installed using the stock MSI backplate and the shorter brass coloered Zalman "nipples" that normally come with the 7000 coolers (don't know how he got ahold of these - I assume he had extras lying around).  This apparently worked temporarily, but eventually the glue on the MSI backplate gave out, and that allowed the entire cooler to come loose, move, and rock back and forth.  Since the stock MSI backplate is only glued on, there is nothing holding it in place but the glue if you remove the stock retention mechanism to which it is mounted.
Since the stock backplate was no longer an option, I decided to try the Zalman backplate.  Unfortunately, the threads in the brass Zalman 7000 mounting nipples are too large to fit into the holes in the Zalman 7700 backplate.  I tried to reinstall using the silver colored Zalman 7700 mounting nipples, but I faced another problem.  The 7700 nipples are too tall!  The entire cooler is loose when you use them, and it doesn't make good contact with the CPU.
Here is my thought.  I have a feeling that if I go back to the (shorter) brass 7000 nipples, and get ahold of a Zalman 7000 backplate (which would obviously have larger holes to fit the brass 7000 nipples), then this just might work perfectly.  I guess the only questions I have are:
(1) Will the 7000 backplate fit on the Neo2 Platinum?  [I assume it should since the 7000 is listed as compatible with this board on the Zalman web page]
(2) Will Zalman be willing to send me a 7000 backplate at no charge?
(3) Has anyone gotten this to work (i.e. mounting a 7700 cooler to a Neo2 Platinum using 7000 hardware)???
Thanks in advance.  Unless someone tells me this proposed installation is doomed to fail, I'll be calling Zalman to request a backplate tomorrow.

Joey,
Zalman told me nothing other than that they would send me a 7000 backplate at no charge.  My proposed installation method may not work at all.
I can't tell from your photos if you're using stock Zalman hardware (i.e. mounting nipples) with the metal MSI backplate.  Your Asus board installation appears to use springs, which AFAIK, are not supplied with any Zalman HSF.  The photos of your MSI installation is too dark to see the mounting nipples.
Use of the MSI backplate with standard Zalman hardware is a recipe for disaster, as explained in my original post.  The mounting threads in the metal MSI backplate actually protrude up through the motherboard surface by about 1/4", as can be seen in your photos.  Once the glue sticking the backplate to the underside of the motherboard gives out, the backplate will be free to move 1/4" away from the back side of the motherboard, due to the play created by the protruding threads.  Thiis will allow the entire Zalman HSF to move with it.  The HSF will be able to rock back and forth, losing contact with the CPU surface.
Your installation method (with the springs) may well solve this problem.  I can't tell from the photos.  Just be sure that your installation does not rely in any way on the fact that there is glue holding the MSI backplate to the motherboard, as that glue will eventually give out.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum slows down

    Hi,
I have a little problem with my new K8N Neo2 Platinum. I installed Windows XP and the newest nForce drivers but if I copy files over LAN (tested both LAN-Ports) or install big applications my music played with winamp slows down. It's played with half speed. In addition to that my mouse pointer is very slow. After the setup or copying files everything is how it should be again. How can I solve this problem?
    My system:
    AMD Athlon64 3500+ (Winchester)
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum-54G (tried different bios releases)
    1024MB Corsair XMS Twinx DDR500
    ATi Radeon 9800 Pro
    2 80GB Maxtor S-ATA (DMA Mode enabled)
Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! Player 5.1
    MorLipf

    Hello,
I copy files to my bro sometimes, 5Gb - all the steam GCF files for CS/HL/CSS/HL2.
    My network usage is 80%-92%
My CPU usage is always under 15%.
It is worse when using 512Mb but as you have 1Gb it shouldn't be bad.
Check in the device manager, your cd drives should be set to DMA mode.

  • Need help with k8n neo2 platinum

I've just installed a new k8n neo2 platinum s939 board with a venice core 3200+ cpu the htt is 2000 and multiplier 10x.
I've gone to the core cell menu and set the htt to 4x (seemed to be this at default) and the max mem clock at 166 (more about this in a moment), the fsb will go quite easily up to 250mhz even 255mhz, but when I try 260 Mhz the machine when it reboots shows the initial slash screen but then goes to a blank screen with the cursor flashing in the top left hand corner, I can't even get back into the bios setup without clearing the cmos.
The odd thing is that the adjust cpu vid is showing a voltage of 1.50 and not 1.40 or startup.
Anyway with the fsb at 250mhz the bios screen is showing the Current ddr clock at 208 mhz ( not the max memclock setting of 166) the memory in the motherboard ( a crucial 512meg ddr333 single stick) seems to perform OK according to memtest which shows no errors after 2 cycles.
Any attempt to get to 260mhz fsb appears to fail even by upping the cpu vid to 1.525v unless i adjust the cpu voltage setting which by default is set to (by cpu vid) to +3.3%. Doing this enables me to get to fsb 260mhz but the memtest fails ( even when I set the max memclock to 133, which shows my current ddr speed at 174mhz, well below the 208mhz which appeared stable with the fsb at 250mhz?)
So firstly why are there two cpu voltage settings in the bios when my manual only shows 1 (there is no mention of this cpu vid setting?
How is it that my memory is stable at 208mhz with a fsb of 255mhz but unstable at 174mhz with the fsb set at 260mhz?
Why does the memory clock lock not appear to be working, the memory should be fixed at 166mhz but infact increases with fsb?
    I have bios revision 1.5.
Please help as I am not familiar with the bios settings for this nforce 3 chipset, they seem rather odd to me. I'm sure my venice core 3200+ cpu can get beyond 250mhz fsb, I have another pc with a venice core 3000+ cpu which runs quite happily at 270mhz fsb.
PS I've tried reducing the htt to 3x but the same thing happens.

OK further feed back, I can get to over 260mhz fsb but the system is not stable the memory runs OK with mem test but I have problems with prime95.
I had to up the cpu core voltage to 1.53v to get to 260mhz using the cpu voltage setting in the bios and setting a 5% increase. increasing the cpu vid setting to 1.55v did not seem to do anything at all the core voltage was still at 1.43v.
I upped the mem voltage to 2.6v from 2.5 but still could not get the system to be stable, it may be that the memory is holding the system back but I don't want to pay for better memory at the moment. Unless anyone has got any other ideas it looks like I may be forced to settle with 250mhz, well still a 500mhz increase maybe not that bad. I've now to try 3d benchmarking using my radeon 9600xt and 3dmark 03.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum Ordered - Advice for a noob please

    Hi there,
this seems like a great forum, was hoping someone could give me some advice - Im trying to pre-empt any major probs....
I am a relative noob to building P.C's - done a few P4 based systems before but this will be my first Athlon based.  This systems primary use will be gaming.  I have the following on order (should be with me next week) : -
    a) MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum Edition SCK 939 Motherboad
    b) AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ 64bit SCK 939 Retail Inc Fan
    c) 160GB Maxtor Calypso 8mb Cache 7200 SATA DHH
    Components I have already
    a) Graphics Card - Nvidia 6800 GT
    b) Memory - Generic 2 X 512MB PC2700 DDR333 RAM
    c) Sound Card - Creative SB Live Value
    d) PSU - Jeantech 450W (22a on 12V Rail)
    e) Case - pretty generic full tower case - no fans attached
    f) CPU FAN - COOLERMASTER HYPER 48 SUPER SILENT HEATPIPE
    g) Spare Hard drive - 120GB Maxtor IDE Hard drive
    h) DVD Drives - 1 x Pioneeer 108 / 1 x Pioneer 104
    I) Monitors - Ilyama 17" TFT & Toshiba 32WL36P LCD
I have some 'noobish' questions - apologies for my ignorance : -
    1) Memory - Will my memory be okay ?  Should I ditch it and buy some Corsair DDR400 (which everyone else seems to have!).  Will performance suffer if I stick with the DDR 333 ? Do I need to adjust settings in BIOS regarding memory timing ? (I only picked up on this from reading through other posts on this board, and am totally clueless on 'timing'- Ive never needed to adjust timing on any previous PC's....!)
    2) Sound Card - will I be better off sticking with the onboard sound on the MSI K8N neo 2 ? Or for best performance do I go with the SB LIve ? (god its a nightmare trying to get updated drivers for this card),  Would I get a noticable performance increase buying an Audigy 2?
    3) Vcore / other power issues - Reading this forum Im kinda scared by many posts along the lines of "..for stability I need to change my memory voltage to xx-V" or "...for a stable system I needed to change my Vcore to xx-V".  Will I need to change the Bios default values on this system just to get it to run stably??
    4) CPU FAN - Are AMD stock fans any good ?  My Hyper 48 is quite highly rated....
    5) Im completely new to SATA drives, but Ive printed off the very useful install guide on this site (which I intend to use).  Is there anything I need to look out for concerning adding my IDE drive also.
I think thats about it just now - if anyone can see any other potential problems with my specs then please let me know.  Im really not trying to be negative / pessimistic - after all the reason I have went for this motherboard is that it is rated as one of the best.  Im just a bit paranoid that the dreaded B.S.O.D awaits me!
On a more positive note - does anyone have similar system specs they use for gaming ?  How well does HL2 / Doom3 / Farcry etc fly J ? I cant wait !
    Thanks for the time

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (HELP!)

     Hi
Ive just bought a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherbaord. When i try to power my pc up nothing happends. All i get is the green power led flashing on my tower. I dont get any fans spining or any other action.
omg whats wrong..... plz help !

Well we now know the motherboard... what about the rest of the components in the computer. When including specs on the powersupplies (post both the 400w and the 480w) include max amps for the 3.3v 5v and 12v rails. This info can be found on a sticker on the side of the PSU.
Do you have the D-Bracket installed? If so where is it hanging at?
    Good Luck

  • Zalman CNPS7700 and K8N Neo2 Platinum

Does anyone know if the Zalman CNPS7700 or CNPS7000 will fit on the K8N Neo2 Platinum.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Could anyone confirm that the zalman cnps7000(A/B) coolers can be use with MSI K8N Neo2 stock backplate or if the zalman backplate have to be used ?
    Thanks.....
    From SAB´s FAQ.....
Zalman has revised the fastening types in their 7000 series HSF's - and choosing the proper model will ensure that the stock MSI backing plate removal is not required.

  • Help K8N Neo2 Platinum

hi Having Real Problems The With K8N Neo2 Platinum Board
When Starting Up The PC All I Get Is One LOud Beep That Lasts About
2 Seconds And Then Stops For 2 Seconds Then Does It Again And So On
But Never Gets To Post ,I Thought It Might Be Some Card Not Seated Right
But After Checking All Cards And Memory The Same Thing Happens Ive Now Took
All The Components Out And Rebuilt My Old 2600xp Socket a And All The Components Are Working Fine , So My Problem is HAve I Got A Doa Motherboard
Or Is It The Athlon64 3200+ ,Oh And The memory That I Been Using Is Branded
Samsung Pc3200 512mb And Ive Also Tried Samsung Branded Pc2700 2x256mb
But Since This Memory Works Fine In My old 2600xp System It Cant Be That Could it >?

One Of The problems That I Have Is I Didnt Get the D Card With The Motherboard
As i Bought A OEM Product ,Ive Only Just read About The Memory Config On MSI Site Which Clearly States That You Should Always Start To Populate The Green
First But I`m Sure This Has Only Just Been Added To The Site Check It Here
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=607
And yes The memory Can Work In Dual Channel Mode But Only With The Samsung PC2700 At 256mb A peice
My Thinking Behind The Graphics CArd Change ie (Swapping The Radeon 9800 Pro
For A Old Radeon 9600 Pro ) Is To See If It May be The Power Supply As The The 9800 Pro Shares The Same 12v line As The Athlon64 CPu But Can`t See It Being The Power Supply As its Only 3 Weeks Old And Is A enermax 470w With Dual 12v
    RAils
But Still My Biggest Question Is Could This be A Faulty athlon64 3200xp Skt 939 CPU >?

  • K8N NEO2 Platinum rebooting

Hi all, just got myself a 64bit MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum board & a 3200+,am happy with it but a couple of days ago i got a blue screen with a long message that i didnt have time to read before the pc rebooted, after the reboot i checked the event viewer log file in administrative tools/control panel but couldnt narrow it down as my particular error code wasnt among the possible causes.
Among some of the possible causes were incorrectly installed USB drivers or the BIOS,i downloaded the latest BIOS update before this problem started(V1.40) which i am using now,i used the MSI live update software to flash it which i did in windows mode.Sorry for prattling on!well it did it again tonight and i managed to read a bit of the writing on the blue screen which mentioned flashing the bios to the latest version.I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem and if so could you please advise me? My K8N Neo Platinum [754] did not include a NB fan. But this usually means the overall size of the heatsink is larger. If you remove the fan from yours, the size of the heatsink will not be big enough to cool your NB. As for temps, I've never seen my NB get hotter than 45'C. Note that the core on my NB should be slightly different than yours.
You could try to use the BIOS fan control for the NB. If set correctly, it should reduce some noise.

  • Reboot problem with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and 250 GB SATA HDD

I'm having a "reboot" problem with my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. After turning my system on it will run without any problems, until I reboot. After a reboot it will always hang after the initial windows-bootscreen. The HDD-light will remain on. If, instead of going into Windows XP SP2, I try to enter the BIOS after a reboot (DEL) the system will also hang (blank screen with blinking cursor).
It started doing this after I installed the Maxtor 250 GB SATA disk. Before, I didn't have problems rebooting. If I disconnect the Maxtor drive I can reboot and enter BIOS and Windows each and every time. Reconnecting the Maxtor 250 GB SATA drive will return the reboot problem. I always have to use the power swith to get a working system again. It's not enough to do a hard reset (this has the same effect as rebooting).
Here are the details of my system:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (BIOS 1.B)
    Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester, 2 Ghz, 512 KB cache, stepping DH-D0)
    2 x Kingston KVR400X64C25/512, 512 MB, DDR, PC3200 (2,5-3-3-8 T1)
Asus Radeon AX800 Pro (256 MB)
    PSU Antec Sonata 380W
HDD Maxtor 80Gb ATA (6Y080P0, Pri Master)
    HDD Seagate 250Gb SATA (ST3200822AS)
HDD Maxtor 250Gb SATA (6V250F0 - jumpered in SATA150 mode, the mobo wouldn't work with the drive in SATA300-mode)
Aopen COM5232/AAH Pro CD-Writer ATA (Sec Master)
BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer ATA (Sec Slave)
P.S. The NVidia IDE-drivers are NOT installed. System is not overclocked.

Thank you for all the replies. Upgrading to the latest Nvidia IDE-drivers did not fix my problem. Moving to other SATA-ports did not help either. Upgrading the mobo's BIOS is not really an option (I'm using one version before the most recent and there isn't anything in the fixlist of the latest BIOS).
Now I've contacted Maxtor for (hopefully) a new firmware.

which im quite fond of... "anything except WINDOZE"
I guess what my question is .....WHAT KIND OF VOODOO RITUAL DO I HAFTA PERFORM TO MAKE THIS WORK!!!!!!!
I dont have any chickens to bleed, but the neighbor does!!!!
    Please help
ANY help would be GREATLY APPRICIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi,
I tried to do the same with os/2 and MSI Neo4 Platinum/SLI and Athlon FX55.
OS/2 Warp 4 requires 256MB ram or less installed to do initial install.   The first partition of HDD must be less than 2.06Gigs in order for the Kernel to compile.
EComStation has the newest version of OS/2.  A Google search should take you right to Sundial's site.

  • News - BIG PROBLEM - MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - DOES NOT POWER!!!

    Hi to everyone.
I'm a proudly owner of a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum that in one year gave me no problem until yesterday morning.
I used the computer in the night before and when I finished I turned it off and I went to bed.
Yesterday morning I found the power led blinking (like if the system was in standby), and there was no way to turn the PC on.
I even took off the battery for more than 12 hours and I left only minimal components installed:
the video card (Gainward GeForce 6800),
    the psu (Antec TruePower 550W),
    1 x 512 MB Ram Crucial Ballistix,
and I checked them into another computer and they work perfectly.
I tried shorting the MB power switch pins with a screwdriver and I've even tried to power on the system without the Memory or the Video Card... I've tried everything that came across my mind with no efforts!!!!
Every time I give power to the MB appens only that the power led starts blinking, but pressing the button the PC doesn't turn on.
PLEASE HELP ME... I really don't know what else to do!!!
    Thanks,
    Alberto

    Hi thanks for the answers.
I do have a D-Bracket, but my problem is not that the system does not boot or does not post... my system DOES NOT POWER ON (!!!!), so d-bracket is useless!
When I plug the system power    the only thing that happens is that the power led starts blinking (with the system still in soft-off), and if I press the power switch button nothing happens!
I've the bios for 7025 v1.8 and the settings where for OFF on power-loss ond pressing the button (can't rememeber if it was more than 4 sec) was meant to turn off the computer, but considering that I un-powered the pc more than once without the MB battery the settings should be factory default by now.
I went through the Windows-XP shut-down system, and i could not be an electrical problem as I always used the PC with a pretty good UPS unit.
Right now these are the full specs of my sytem:
    - MB MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra
    - GAINWARD 6800 2600 GLH 256 MB Ram
    - PSU Antec TruPower 550 W
    - CPU AMD64 3500+ core Winchester @11*210 Mhz (this cpu has never overclocked very well)
    - HEATSINK Thermalright XP-90 with a 12 Cm Enermax Fan (CPU temp in always below 55 °C when stressed)
    - 1 x 512 Mb RAM Crucial Ballistix DDR400 optimized for  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
I left only these things inside my computer in the hope that it would turn on... it did not work. I tested each component but the MB, and they work perfectly.
    Again...
Thanks for you efforts, any help will be appreciated.
    Alberto.
All parts have been tested: CPU/RAM/GFX/PSU/HD/DVD,  just not the MOBO ?
Checked if the MOBO is shorting in the case ?
Have you tried using the reset switch as power, on/off switch ?  I've seen before when the power switch stops working (lose/bad wire busted spring) after swapping  reset to power, then the system turned on. Worth a try, as sending it back to USA won't be cheap. If its over 1 year old it mite not be covered by the re-seller and or MSI. Best to check this out as law and warranty is different from country to country.
    Good Luck

  • Want comments on k8n neo2 platinum prior to buying it,

    hi people.
im doing some research prior to buyng an amd64 motherboard and have been looking at this one.
    MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum-54G Moderkort S939 nForce3 250Ultra,SATA,GbLAN,ATX,Dual-DDR
is the firewall good or bad ?
is the motherboard easy to work with ?
    stable ?
anyone tried the new 3000+ and 3200+ on it ?
i would also want end user comments on it.
    Good Night.
    EDIT:
im going to most of the hardware found in my signature.
if the psu aint up to it i will use a second psu until i get money to buy a bigger one.

Hi Raven, missed this thread till now!!  Congrats soon getting S-939 A64, that will be way less than 10lb shipping charge to mail you
My MSI K8N Neo2 NF3 250 Ultra has been stable from BIOS v1.0 upwards, no mis-fires, no overheats, no comm/USB/PS2 probs, smooth all the way, for me. Per reviews Gigabyte and Asus also good, MSI won Bmarks on reviewers reference boards.
Peeps reporting probs with board here though, so check out this nVidia section. The BIOS updates helped some.
-Zalman CNPS7000_ Al/Cu HSF screws right into the original backplate, keeps my FX53 at 34C Folding.
-CNPS7000A or B are good, peeps say ya' need to use the backplate came with the HSF. The mobo backplate comes off pretty easy. Edit: re Hansh's mod Zalmans.
-The stock AMD fan is fine at stock or low OC.
-No HSF install pix I've seen, even the monster TT heatpipe cooler, have interfered with RAM, but there's always an exception.
-Your Antec is prolly good enough, AMD rec's a reputable 350W or better. CPU uses ~90W (98?) Like ya say, if it isn't you always have the other one too
-NB fan is small but works well so far. It's noise doesn't compete with the other 8 fans
ps: Software only prob, Win XP doesn't like RAID 5 PCI cards at install.
    =--
    Hansh, Allreet!

    My issues are:
Improve compatilbility problem with some USB 2.0 devices
    BIOS reported incorrect CPU temperature.
If you have the d-bracket installed, it may help to completely disconnect it. Sometimes it will cause inaccurate temp readings. You can always plug it back in if you need it for troubleshooting.
I unhooked mine & my reported CPU temps dropped by 8C...

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum 54G BIOS problem

    I recently bought a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum-54G mainboard with W7025NMS v1.3  092204 revision of BIOS.
AMD Athlon64 3000+ 939 is installed on the mainboard, with 2x512 GEIL PC3200 memory modules in dual channel configuration working on default frequency of 200MHz. CPU is recognized correctly as AMD Athlon64 3000+ on startup.
Mainboard’s BIOS seems to be corrupted. In Cell Menu options, in the upper left part of the screen (printed blue) are processor and DDR working timings:
Current CPU Clock 1810MHZ, Current DDR Clock 200MHz.
Aggressive Timings and Dynamic Overclocking values are [Disabled] (processor working on its defaulf settings); Spread Spectrum is [Disabled] while all DRAM Configuration settings are set to [Auto].
While entering HT frequency settings, (locked to [x5])  there are no other values to select – empty, and there is no way to leave it (ESC doesn’t help, the only thing possible to do is to reset the computer by pressing the Reset button on the chassis), but  the HT frequency settings were enabled when I loaded Fail-Safe settings, offering [1x], [1.5x], [2x], [2.5x], [3x], [4x], [5x].
Adjust CPU Ratio settings offer only [StartUp], [x4]~[x9] values, but as I understood by reading the manual there should be [StartUp], [x4]~[x20].
CPU Voltage, Memory Voltage and AGP Voltage are set to default.
CPU-Z, as well as SiSoft Sandra 2004 and SiSoft Sandra 2005 and MSI CORE CELL show that processor works at a core speed ~1005MHz, showing multiplier locked on x5.0 and HTT locked at ~200MHz, while the voltage is ~1.05V!
I downloaded the latest BIOS revision (v1.4), did the BIOS flash, but the problem remains!
    Anybody, help!

    CPU Ratio settings
AMD64 CPOU's have a lock on CPU ratios which varies according to the specification of the chip. therefore the multiplier available in your bios stops at the max multiplier allowed by amd for your cpu.
As an example i'm running a 3200 754 which has a maximum muliplier of 11 so that is the max i see in bios.
