K8N neo2 raid0 issues... random failure

I'm running 2x80 hitachi sata II in raid0 on sata 3 and 4.
Although everything works fine most of the time, sometimes (rarely) when I turn the pc on only one disk is recognized by the bios, causing a blue screen in windows boot (of course). I push the reset button and all becomes fine then. All the data is still there.
I've checked both disks for surface errors, they're both ok.
Nvraid bios is 4.81.
Does anybody has this issue with ocasional raid0 failure? This is really strange... I don't believe it's due the disks.

I hope you like my signature now, lol... :-)
Well, the PSU is a quality one, I guess, and the two hitachi drives aren't 1 month old yet. I already scanned them several times and found no problems at all.
Also, all my disks have a HDD cooler.
It could really be a power cable issue, since there's really a lot of cables inside... but I only have two sata power cables, and they're both powering the two disks... :-/ Besides, the SATA power cables are independent of all the other cables (that is, nothing else is connected to the wires where they are connected).
The only thing I did today was adding a HDD cooler for my Seagate IDE drive (the only one that didn't have one), after powering the pc up one of the Hitachi drives wasn't detected, I just reset the pc (didn't turned it off) and it was fine... Maybe my system is soooo lightning fast that the electricity wasn't fast enough to reach the 2nd drive on time... bahaha.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum issue

    Hello,
I just got my motherboard yesterday, hooked up the CPU (AMD 3800+) and other devices, tried to turn it on... And nothing.
I suspected a PSU issue, so I tested the Supply on another computer, worked just fine. Next I thought the issue might be with the case/motherboard power switch, so I connected the two on the motherboard with a screwdriver like it says in the FAQ, still nothing. I even replaced the bettery, worth a try...
Both of the power plugs were connected to the motherboard, and I'm sure I didn't skip a step. I'm starting to think I got a defective motherboard....
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Eric

    When it's busy.
Google is your friend. I found a test labs article comparing Newcastle 130nm cores with the Venice 90nm - including power consumption at stock and overclock. And I found data sheets on the 6800 board.
When MSI says you can run the K8N Neo2 with a 350W PSU they mean pretty much that. You can run the board & CPU.
Highly questionable. From what I'm reading (this is a pretty reliable source) http://balusc.xs4all.nl/ned/har-cpu-amd-k8.php, the K8 architecture draws a maximum of 89 watt. Even a winchester 3500+ (which is the one I have) only uses 67 watt. Since it runs at 1.4v, drawing 45.8a, 1.4 times 45.8 equals 64.12 watts. It sums up. I don't know where you get your sources from, but what you are stating means an Athlon64 consumes more power than an Intel Prescott (which uses at maximum 115 watt). Imagine a CPU using 140 watts, how would you cope with the heat?

  • Big Problem!! K8N Neo2 rebooting on random!!

Okay I just got my new memory today - pqi TURBO Series Dual Channel Platinum Kit 184-Pin 1GB(512MB x 2) DDR PC-3200 - Retail.  Now ever since I put this memory in the computer crashes randomly every few minutes then reboots.  I don't know what is wrong :(  This memory is the same as OCZ, it is Samsung TCCD chips with a Brainpower PCB.  I don't understand why its not working.
I tryed moving the memory into all slots possible, and it didnt work.  I did DIMM1-2 first, then 3-4, then 1-3, and nothing works.  Can anyone please tell me if there is a way to fix this problem, if not I guess I'm going to RMA the board, and get a different one.

I had the exact same problem as you for the longest time and I couldn't figure it out.  I had my memory in slots 3&4 and my computer would just randomly reboot.  It didn't matter what I was doing, and I got no bluescreens or anything.  Once it rebooted everything seemed normal again.  I thought that it was a heating issue, a power supply issue, or a memory issue.  I installed a couple more case fans and stopped overclocking, the problem did not go away.  I ran memtest for about four hours with the overclocked settings and no errors occurred, so that ruled out the memory.  My power supply meets the recommendations that I have seen on this board and on AMD's site, so I ruled that out as well.  I tried a handful of bioses (official and beta) and the problem did not go away.
I updated to official bios 1.4 and switched the memory to slots 1&2 and the problem has gone away.  Now my setup is rock solid.  I don't know which one fixed the problem (or maybe it was the combination).  I think that this board (bios?) just has some quirks in it.  Once you figure out the quirks and get everything right it is an awesome board.
Try every test that I did and see if anything works for you.  Start with Memtest and go from there.

  • MSI K8N Neo2- Power Issue

    Howdy folks,
Old problem here, and getting differing opinions from tech support.
If I plug in computer, or turn on at the PSU, all lights and fans turn on without my even pressing the power button, yet it does not boot up. Stays that way, whirring away, until I press the power button and it starts up normally. If I power down after that, as long as I don't unplug or turn off the PSU in back, it works fine.
But, if power gets turned off, either thru unplugging, turning off PSU, or power outage, and then comes back on, the same thing happens. It starts whirring away until I turn it on and then off.
Got 3 vague replies from MSI telling me, "This is normal when the 5Volt standby setting has been enable under the cmos setup. You can disable this feature under the cmos setup." Normal? Most people have no idea what I'm talking about.
Anyway, their last email said it must be the power supply and not the mobo.
Of course, Enermax says it must be the Mobo, because my PSU tester (cheap Compusa thingy) had all green lights.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to another PSU, unless I plug in my old Dell 250W, which i'm worried about frying.
I don't see how it could be the PSU, since it seems to me the Mobo would be the gatekeeper of power to the fans and lights.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for the replies.
wwaldo, thanks, but if I understand you correctly, my issue isn't a post problem.
It's that the moment I plug the power cable into an outlet, the machine fans and drive lights all power up.
In my mind, nothing should happen until I press the power button.
It just stays that way until  I press the button, and then starts normally. After that, when I shut down, it powers down just fine, and stays off until I power up normally. It's only a concern to me when I unplug the machine, because everytime I plug it in again, it immediately starts whirring away by itself. It's great if I never unplug it or turn off the PSU in the back, but the fact that it's getting power when it shouldn't concerns me.
Was this the problem you were having?
Regarding the BIOS, I've gone thru each bios update as they've come out, cleared CMOS, changed everything one by one, set things back to optimized defaults before starting over, made offerings to the gods,  promised to be nice to all mankind, and finally I'm just pulling my hair out. Maybe I should just love and accept it the way it is.

  • Still K8n neo2 random reboots !

few days ago had random reboots while using/quiting games!
almost try everything like testing other ram, Vga etc...
and face the trouble coming from voltage line drops (low 3.3v).
So decide to swap for better Psu and bought a hiper 480w type R.
but still have that fu..... reboot
try a single(noname) 512 ddr stick and hadn't the prob
like to know why dual channels ddr(512TwinX3200c2) don't work ?
In fact i bought k8n neo2 instead of k8n neo cause of the dual capability!!!!
    anyone could help?
    please help!!!

I've seen that happen on my older P4 when I overclocked it.  Games push your computer to the limits so it might be an issue with overheating or having the errors due to overclocking.

  • Freezing issues with K8N Neo2 Plat & 6800 gt

Well I get random freezing during games. Sometimes it freezes for 5-10 seconds then comes back, while other times it just freezes and the sound comes back but not the game.
I had this problem when I first upgraded.
    K8N Neo2 plat
    1gb corsair xms 3200
    athlon 64 3500
    aslo have:
420-30? antec tru power supply. I cant remember exact number.
    6800gt ultra
    audigy 2 plat
Now I first posted my problem a while ago and someone told me to try chaning the HT to 4x instead of 5x. So I did and it worked. It worked for a few weeks and now the problems have come back.
    Any Ideas?

Along with the above issues, I've also found that a lot of my gaming probs with the 6800 are due to it being a "bandwidth hog" & it's latency needs to be adjusted lower to enable the other devices on the PCI bus (i.e. sound card) to get enough bandwidth to function properly. This isn't noticeable until you start some heavy gaming with a lot going on at once...
If your game ever practically chugs to a halt when a lot of sounds are being produced, this is the main problem. Here's a way & some notes on how to deal with it. Just like every "tweak" though, it's not guaranteed to work for everyone but I got noticeable benefits from it.
    - D/L (I got it @ guru3D) PCI Latency Tool & give the "Read Me" a quick once-over. Write down the values for your devices, in case you need/want to change 'em back. Most items are well labeled - the 6800 & your sound card will be what you are most interested in. I wouldn't mess with the rest of 'em, as they deal with low level system items that are best left alone. Unless you are truly an Uber Geek!
    - The latency for my 6800 listed as a massive 248 clks! For some reason, I've read that ATI cards don't default at such a large value, which might explain why people don't seem to have as many performance issues with 'em. Anyhow lower the 6800 to a more "reasonable" value, like 128 or 64. 64 seemed to work best for me.
    - Save the settings, reboot & test it out. You can experiement with the sound card latency too, in order to find what works best for you, but I wouldn't set it at less than it's default value (32).
    Hope this helps.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum + Winchester 3200.. flabbergasting FSB issue

    OK, here goes the issue:
I just got a brand new K8N Neo2 Platinum - Bios 1.4 and a box 3200 Winchester CPU. The crazy thing is the FSB - it is set to 200 Mhz in the Bios, but in real-time it happens to be something like 200.95 Mhz. No idea how to fix this - as a result the CPU goes at 2010 Mhz, while obiviously it should run at 2000Mhz. There are also some stability problems, like random hangups in Windows. My ram is 2x512 Kingston HyperX PC4000.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Also about your "hang up" deal... Post more detailed specs on your system - You'll get better help that way.

  • Random system freezes with K8N Neo2...

    Hi!
    I've got the following problem:
My Pc freezes randomly, i.e. I'm booting my system, WinXP starts and I'm on my desktop and then it freezes and nothing happens( and I did nothing!). I have to reboot my machine. Then, the pc boots up and everything works fine (mostly). So, I can work with it maybe for a few hours or a few days and everything works nearly perfect. But then, it freezes again and I have to reboot it. Sometimes, mostly when I'm playing ut2k4 or other games,  it freezes after a few minutes or a few hours of playing and I have to reboot, but not only one time; the pc boots up, I start the game again, play a few minutes and it freezes again. (this situation repeats itself several times). Or, I start the game and everything works fine for some days!
I'm frustrated because I can't play what I want or even work because of those freezes. I tried some things, like reinstalling new drivers for my mb but nothing helped. I cleared cmos and made new settings in my bios but this also didn't brought the wanted results. And now, I'm at a point where I don't know what I also can do.
Maybe a bios update would help, but I read some posts here where people have made 'bad' experiences with the new bios version, so I'm careful.
My PC isn't overclocked and my temps are  ~50 idle  ~59 working
    My system:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ S939 NewCastle Rev. CG
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum-54G Bios. 1.0

    1* S-ATA WD 120GB
    1* U-IDE WD 120GB

    Crazy
    *edit*
oh, I tested my RAM with Memtest and there where no problems...

I also thought it could be my power supply, so I bought a new one "Antec True Power 480", but it wasn't my power supply....

:rolleyes:My computer just froze the missus out and I got an ear full “I thought you said that this one’s better than the old one?” she wasn’t too happy when I told her to reset it, as she lost all of her email she was typing.
Also I found some links to similar problems, still cant figure if it’s a hardware fault or a software one

    bhanja_trinanjan,
If you can get 2.3.3.6 Mushkin, OCZ, or Corsair, then you would be the set.
PC-3200 or higher would be the way to go. If you ever plan on overclocking, then PC-4000 is the best option.
    Take Care,
    Richard
Thanks for your help. I am trying to locate Corsair dealers in Kolkata(My hometown). Are there any known issues with the K8N Neo 2 FX? I bought this motherboard just a few days back and I am facing so many problems.
Does this motherboard undervolt the AGP and RAM slots? Will I have to increase AGP and DDR voltage to make my system stable? Doesn't the raising of these voltages shorten the life of the video card and ram modules? I want to buy Corsair/OCZ/Mushkin. But in case it's unavailable, will Kingston RAM lead to an unstable system?

  • K8N Neo2 platinum & 750g sata RAID issue

Hi there I have an issue with booting up. I have 1 200g Western digital HDD where windows is installed and I have 1 further 500g WD drive which were both fine until I decided to buy 2 samsung 750g HDD's to run in RAID. I have installed the drives in RAID and formatted but I am having a problem with booting.
If I reset, the computer keeps rebooting at the detection stage, powers off and keeps doing it over and over. Sometimes it will go through if you wait long enough. When I turn the power on and off it will go through the detection stage no worries every time but then at the XP loading screen it will freeze there. Sometimes it goes through and I will boot into XP fine and other times I can't get in.
I have the latest Bios 7025V1D but I am wondering if this issue is bios related because of the 750g size... The problem has only started since I have installed the two 750g HDD's in RAID. Does this bios version support 750g HDD's? Is there an updated BIOS to fix this problem somewhere?
I have 2gig of ram, 3500+ processor, latest Nforce3 drivers from Nvidia, RAID drives on sata ports/3/4, 500gig WD on sata port 1, 200 gig WD is HDD is IDE, Windows SP2 and all updated, ummmmmm everything else is fine I'm fairly sure.
I had a few troubles installing the RAID drivers because windows didn't want to accept the drivers I downloaded from here and did not want to accept the drivers in windows. I ended up getting it the drives to come on-line through the use of START/NVIDIA corp/ NVIDIA RAID program (cant remember the name, typing this on another computer).
Any ideas would be greatly and very muchly appreciated!
    Terry.

    Ok My PSU is: WideTECH 550w, +3.3v=33a, +5v=36a, +12v=25a, -12v=1.0a, +5vsb=2.5a.
I am only running 3 HDD's at the moment, the 2 750's and the 1 200gig. I have left the other 500gig unplugged until I get this problem sorted. I don't have a cd rom plugged in or a floppy. I only connect them when I need to because this computer is setup to be a storage server and I use my other pc for anything dvd related etc. The only other thing which is chewing power is the video card which is an old 6800gt ultra. So basically the power issue was fine until I installed the two extra HDD's and as I have unplugged the 500gig for the time being its only really one extra HDD which shouldn't be an issue. Oh I have two 80mm case fans using the psu aswell.
As for my other specs: I have 1 gig of Geil dual channel RAM 2x512 sticks, CPU=AMD Athlon64 3500+, MB is MSI K8n Neo2 Platinum, Vid card= Leadtek geforce 6800gt ultra 256 agp, You know about my HDD's but here they are again= 1x 200g WD caviar IDE, 1x 500g WD caviar sata(1 I think), 2 x 750g samsung sata (2 I think), OS = XP Home SP2 with all lasest automatic updates, latest BIOS etc etc etc....
My windows is a legit copy as well.
You mentioned putting my HDD's into sata 1 mode... I was of the opinion that my motherboard does not support sata2 anyway and would not allow them to run in anything but sata1?? If I did want to change the sata mode where would I do this anyway?
Thanks for your reply but I don't think it has to do with psu or sata mode although I'm interested about this sata2 thing, please explain.
    Thanks in advance,
    Terry.

  • New install issues on k8n Neo2

Hey all, New to these forums, but not to computers and building them.  I have a couple questions for you before I RMA this k8n neo2.  I have had no issues using the Asus board that I have, so I know that none of my hardware is bad.
I am running the 1.2 bios now, but it even did it with the original bios that cam eon the board.
    1. None of my PCI slots work... not a one.  I cannot get my Hercules sound card or even a simple lan card to work... any ideas?
    2. While running tests for a review, so far, both 3dm 2003 AND UT 2003 demos, pause for just a second in various parts of the tests.  I have never had this happen before.
I am at a loss to figure this out, and could use some help if anyone has some ideas.

Full spec including PSU amps on the 12V rail.
Point 1 i have heard mentioned before but dont know of any fixes - I haven't tried my PCI slots yet, maybe I should :/ does ps2/usb work for you?
Point 2 what gfx card have you got, turn AGP fastwrites off in your bios, if your overclocking the gfx card clock the 2d and 3d to the same value.
Try updating the Nf3 drivers whilst your at it...

  • K8N Neo2 plat, no post issue cont'd.

Hi its me again, the guy with the intermittent "no post" k8n neo2 plat.
Loaded the 1b3 beta the other day, again 1 day later the box would not post, as usual no
indication on the D-bracket, just one flash of the keyboard, the fans span one half round.
Since it could run for 1month plus with 1a3 beta BIOS(no usb2.0 (I could not wait any longer wanted usb2.0 so I flashed to a newer bios)),
start thinking it could be something between these latter full versions and this.
Then saw a thread on the web about someone having a Winnie that his box also has issues when swapping for latter
version than 1.5, with 1.5 his plat run fine. Go figure.
So for the time being I switched it to v1.5 bios, lets see how long it holds.
oh btw, the CMOS clear "no effect" seem to be avoided, by unplugging every external
peripheral prior to doing the cmos clear.

    Thanks, all help appreciated.
The Led display from your D-Bracket indicates it is stopping when it tries to initialise the floppy drive.  You don't have one.  No A+ course needed, just hook up your floppy or disable it in the BIOS.  I have no floppy drive (I have no need) so have it disabled.  Probably best to hook up all relevant devices that will enable a working machine.  The BIOS is probably halting when it can't initialise a device.  There would be no point in it proceeding if it doesn't have all devices needed for a bootable machine...
See D-Bracket guide here D-Bracket Guide
    I'm only guessing.

see Basic Building Tips - Quote
As this pertains to A64's make sure that you have a power supply that is either approved for use by MSI/AMD or that you have plenty of amps on the 12 volt rail. Typically we have noted many issues based on stability with PSU's being rated at less than 24A on the 12v rail.
    Power Consumption: NVIDIA vs. ATI
    2)The D-Led Quote
    Processor initialization
also covers memory issues as with the 64 the memory controller is on the CPU.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum RAID Boot Issue...

    Hi everyone,
I am running two WD 120gb drives in single-drive mode.  Everything is working fine.  My issue is that every time I boot, I have to wait nearly 10 seconds for a message that says 'Detecting Array' just before it loads WinXP.  The thing is, I have RAID disabled in the BIOS.  How do I get rid of this annoying boot message?

  • Help! k8n neo2 random crash

Just built k8n neo2 and updated all bios and drivers using live update. System runs great except for the occasional random crash.  Without any indication, the system will simply reboot, or go to a system level blue screen with lots of error messages for a breif second and then reboot.  Upon reboot, xp reboots as if nothing happend, other times it goes into safe mode (in which case i reboot normal everything works fine for several hours.... or until i run virtually any game software)
Only one time did windows say it had recovered from a fatal error, but it didnt have an explanation.  The best xp could suggest is that it was "device driver" related but didn't say which device.
When running internet applications all day it happend only once.  But when running 3-d games it seems to happen every time about 5-30 min into the game at different points in the game.  The same game works fine on my asus system.  I loaded another "doom" type game that even came bundled with the ati 9800 pro, and it also crashes and automatically reboots without notice 5-10 min into the game. I updated all the graphic drivers to the 9800 pro, but to no avail.
I didn't mess with any of the Muskin blue 3200 ( 2x512 )memory settings (all default setting) The post test for memory didn't indicate a problem...is anyone using muskin?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Went to mushkin and finally found their timing page.
    http://www.mushkin.com/epages/Mushkin.storefront/41e18a17005e60d62740c0a80102061c/Product/View/991158#nforce3
I have the msi-7025 ver:1  On the mushkin site it lists timings for the nforce3-250  What is the "-250"? are there differn't versions of the nforce3 becuase everywhere I looked..on my system board, on box, on system software, it only references "nforce 3." In anycase, for the mushkin blue 3200 it shows 2-3-3-10 and thats what I have plugged in now. So I hope this is right?
Im still getting the crashes in the games, but task manager is catching them before the system reboots, so a little improvement.  I am heavily suspecting the ATI all-in-wonder 9800 PRO now.  Is anyone using this board or the regular 9800 pro? I updated the drivers and have been on their site but not much help so far.
As far as my Diamond max 10 300 HD....no problems with drive recognition. I was using bios 1.3 right out of the box.
It works in all ports....its currently in sata2 only by chance.
Most peoples basic mistakes are two fold:
    1. If they are not using RAID, they are mistakenly loading the RAID drivers during xp insallation. (like I did by mistake).  Don't load the drivers that came on floppy  with the board if not using RAID ...the system will automatically load the SATA drivers.
Simply check in bios or watch during post to see if the SATA diamond max 6b300SO is loaded (or whatever diamond max drive you have).  If its indicated, then you DON'T have a "drive recognition or SATA problem"
    2.  Realize tha Win XP WILL not recognize a drive larger than  ~137 gig. Therefore,  when you install XP it will only say you have a 137gig to be formatted.
To solve this problem you need to load maxtors "large drive enabler" software AFTER windows is installed...once installed you will "see" the full 300gig.
The way I solved this was during xp installation when presented with 137gig, I formatted 60gig to be my c: drive (you can make a c: partition up to 137 or as small as you want). I formatted and installed windows on the C: partition as normal leaving the rest of the drive unformatted at this point. Once windows booted I installed service pack 2 (required for large drive support) and installed the Maxtor "large drive enabler" software from the maxtor site.  At this point the rest of the unpartitioned HD was "recognized". I used Win administrator/diskmanagement tools to create and extended partition & and format the logical drive(s) I created.
In short, never a SATA problem for me.  I have since upgraded to bios 1.4 and no problems either.
Needless to say Maxtor could have been a little more complete in their explanation on their web site.  For most people, I suspect  it is a "chicken and egg" problem ... how to load software on a drive that will enable you to "recognize" entire drive BEFORE the drive has been recognized and formatted.
    Thanks
