K8N NEO2 shut down/wont post

Long story short. I cleaned my case, put it back together. System ran for a few minutes then shut down. It did that a few times then all it would do was turn on for a few seconds. Now it wont post at all. Any ideas? Thanks. SIK.

put components out one by one until it posts
also try to swap memory/power supply/ cpu and see if it post again
I know it is a long and hard process but it is the most effective way of solving the problem.

  • New PC keeps shutting down after POST?

    Hi,
I just built a PC, got it all setup and working, everything fitted nicely, but...whenever I switch it on it runs through the POST, and after it displays the PCI configuration and then reads 'updating DMI pool' it just shuts down!
I can enter the BIOS and goto PC Health and see the CPU temp, thats 54ish, so I don't think its that, but even in the BIOS after a certian amount of time (45sec's) it shuts down again.
What makes me think this isn't 'planned' shutdown is that it won't startup again until I unplug the PSU for around a minute.
Bearing the above in mind, I thought maybe motherboards have gotton a lot cleverer, since the last time I built one and they shutdown if they don't find an OS, so I put a windows CD in the drive and started an installation, which starts fine and the PC stays on.
Strange, hey, this is the mobo http://msicomputer.co.uk/Products.aspx?product_id=703524&cat_id=77
I'm using an Athlon 64 with a 300w PSU and I noticed on the webpage above that it reccomends a minimum of 350w, so I tried unplugging everything, HDD, CD, PCI cards etc. but the same problem so I don't think its the PSU either.
Any ideas? Its just strange that when it starts installing XP it stays on.

  • K8N Diamond shutting down with FX-57

    Hi all,
My water cooling solution suffered a water pump failure which in turn led my comp to shut down after hitting the heat safety ceiling of 60deg. I replaced the water pump, turned back on only get CMOS checksum errors. I tried to enter BIOS setup but the system would not enter the setup, instead just displaying a flashing underscore immediately after the SilRAID startup screen. I reset the BIOS via the SW1 Clear CMOS button and also by disconnecting power and removing the battery. Neither did any good. I then reflashed the BIOS to v1.8. Flash was succesful but still could not enter BIOS setup. I need to get in there because I run a RAID0 array off the Nvidia RAID controller which needs to be configured within the BIOS.
I presumed the mobo was damaged during the cooling failure so tried using another K8N Diamond from another computer. After turning on the comp, it promptly shut down after around 15 seconds, never making to attempting a load of the OS. The more I tried to turn it on, the quicker it would shut down to the point where it would shut down after 2-3 seconds. I thought something was overheating so checked all fans, replaced the water cooling with the stock AMD cooler, left it to cool for hours - it still shut down within seconds.
I feared that perhaps the CPU was damaged when the cooler failed so I tried to swap the CPU's from the problem computer and another computer. Both the FX-57 from the problem comp and the FX-53 from my other comp ran fine on the other's mobo, managing to complete benchmarking / run games / stay on overnight. So the CPU was fine.
I thought it was simply that the second K8N Diamond just didn't get along with FX-57, for whatever reason, maybe just those two particular components were not working seeing as I had no problem with the original K8N Diamond staying powered. So I bought a brand new K8N Diamond, installed, powered on - same problem!!! Computer shuts off in less than 5 seconds again...
I tried alternative PSU's (Silverstone 600w and Thermaltake 680w), two vid cards (each of my 7800GTX 512's), diff memory (Corsair 2-2-2-5 and OCZ EL  Dual Channel Platinum Elite), stock cooler / water cooler, with and without HD's connected / powered. Even tried booting with just the CPU, CPU cooler and graphics card plugged in and drawing power - still shuts down in 3 seconds.
I'm at a loss to explain this and not to mention extremely frustrated. The computer ran fine for 3 months, staying powered 24 / 7 but after the cooling failure, I can't even get it to boot on 3 different K8N Diamonds and all different components. Yet an FX-53 in any of them works fine, and the FX-57 on another motherboard is fine.
After all that, does anybody have any ideas / suggestions? Any help would really be appreciated. Otherwise I'm off to buy my 3rd! () motherboard for this comp, and after all this hassle, it won't be an MSI should it come to that. Sad because before this, I had a good experience with MSI.
Thanks in advance for any help...

OK you tried a different MB, CPU and RAM... What else did you have in the system when it failed that you haven't swapped out? The Vid card maybe.
If the board works with an FX 53 and not the FX 57 that would lead me to think right off that the chiop was cooked. Yet if it works in another rig then that scraps that idea. And it sounds like you chasing your tail in these other items as well. My first thought would also be a PSU and maybe the one you swapped in was not heavy enough to handle the load. You did not say so that is also suspect.
You may have to use that second rig as a temporary testbed to check each part out until you find what failed as well. You may have messed up more than one part and you could chase yourself forever trying stuff in the machine that dropped the pump.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat - computer wont boot. RMA?

as the title suggests, I have a K8N Neo2 Plat with an amd athlon 64 3800+ and 2x512mb OCZ PC3700EB Platinum ram.  Everything has worked great for the past year. However this weekend when I came home from school my pc wouldn't boot up. I plugged in all the cables, turned on the PSU, and hit the power button and the fans spun for about half a second then nothing. I tried again several times and the fans didn't even spin.  I tried several plugs in the house, still nothing.  Thinking it was the PSU (Antec NeoPower480) I bought a new one today and tried that.  Still nothing.  I even tried shorting the power switch on the case in case it's stopped working. still nothing.  I'm quite knowledgeable about computers so it's not a silly newbie mistake.  A friend of mine who does computer repairs thinks it's the motherboard, and I agree.
I was going to try RMAing it - do you think I should, and is the process relatively easy/painless?  (FYI I'm Canadian)

Strip it down to a basic setup, CPU, 1 stick of ram (try different ram) and graphic card. This is all you need to boot and get into BIO.
If you can get into BIO then add one device at a time until you find the faulty piece, if you are not able to get it to boot then pull the graphic card and try to boot, you should get some beeps, do the same with the ram. If you don't get any beeps then it is a good chance it is your MB.

  • G4 Sawtooth upgraded to 1.2Ghz Shuts down During Post after Leopard Install

Hey everyone I also have a G4 sawtooth and I attempted to 1st upgrade to Leopard and the machine would boot to the Apple logo and shut down. I checked the HD it was fine I was able to slave it to my MacBook. So I partitioned and Clean Installed Leopard took a while to install and then I transferred all my settings and files over. Worked for one boot and same issue Apple Logo and quick shut down. I think I am gonna image and not transfer settings to see what happens. Anyone have this issue?

Update: I removed all third-party PCI cards and peripherals, and was able to boot from the Leopard DVD. Performed an archive/install, and everything worked properly. Reinstalled/reconnected all the hardware I'd removed, and it all works fine.
So, the moral of the story is:
    * Remove all third-party hardware prior to the upgrade
    * Perform an archive/install (or an erase/install)--DO NOT simply upgrade!
    * Reinstall third-party hardware one item at a time to check compatibility
List of third-party stuff I removed & reinstalled, for the curious:
    Sonnet Tango FireWire/USB PCI card
    MacWireless 802.11g PCI card
    Acon USB PCI card
    External FireWire disk
    iSight
    D-Link DWB-120M USB Bluetooth module
    USB-B2K Skype telco adapter
The Sonnet 1GHz CPU upgrade works fine. When I originally purchased it, the 1GHz model was the fastest one that didn't require special firmware, and I figured that was the best way to go. Sure enough, no CPU-related issues with the Leopard upgrade. Now, if I can lay hands on a Radeon 9700 or 9800 Pro graphics card...

  • Random Shut Down & Wont Start Up

For some reason, my computer has randomly shut down 2 times and has been unable to start up 2 times as well. I just bought this MacBook Pro a few days ago and previously had a PC. Is there something I might be doing wrong to cause this or does anyone know if there is a fix /problem I am unaware with. Any help/advice would be extremely appreciated!

That isn't really a shutdown. That is more of a crash. There are problems that cause a complete shutdown of the computer.
When this happens, is the latch LED on?
The console application is in the Utilities folder found in your /Applications folder. Or you can use the Finder menu, Go->Utilities. To make sure you are looking at the console log, click on the Logs button and choose console.log in the left side panel. The system.log can also have useful information about the problem.

  • It shut down & wont power back up?

Today My iPhone I do believe has gone belly up like a gold fish in the sun. It just went down and I cannot get it back on. It wont even appear to be recharging. Even though it had almost a full battery. Does anyone here know why this is happening and then how to fix the problem?
    Thanks for your input,
    Lisa

    It's likely that its a hardware failure, but some things to try are;
Plug it into your wall charger - do you get anything on the screen?
Plug into you computer - do you get anything on the screen? Does itunes detect that it's plugged in? If you have photos in the camera roll, does image capture detect the phone and show previews photos available for importing?
Can you put the phone into recovery mode for itunes to restore it? (beware, this mode will restore the phone's firmware and you may loose information off the phone) See here for instruction of how to do it. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If none of these work, you will probably need to take it to Apple or their representative in your area for it to be checked.
    Hope this helps

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum freezes on post/windows

I searched the forum, but couldn't find an answer to my problem. My computer seems to freeze on post screen with d-bracket leds usually pointing to a problem with Testing Base and Extended Memory. Sometimes (1-5% of reboots) it freezes on Boot Attempt. When after 10-20 tries I get it to boot windows, it freezes on loading Windows or a few minutes after logging in or even after 12 hours of using Windows, no matter if comp is idle or 100% cpu usage.
It started a few weeks ago when I noticed that my comp had frozen in the middle of the night while I was sleeping. Then it started to froze sooner and sooner and now often freezes in the middle of post. I've taken my mobo and all out of case and tried every combo of RAM I have to no avail. Doesn't seem to matter which dimm slot I use, it still freezes. I've run memtest86 and all ram sticks passed. Second time I tried later, the test froze like Windows usually does in this case (memtest manual said this could happen). CPU doesn't show any sign of overheeting: now at 41C (comp has been ~1 hour on). I used to have 2 other HDs and a dvd-rw drive on, but removing them didn't help. Also the configuration of my comp has been the same for about a year before this problem started. I've tried a different videocard (ti-4200), didn't help. I don't have another PSU that's as good as the current one, but I would think removing components would help if it was a power supply issue? Or changing the videocard to a less powerful one would? But it didn't. I don't have another 939 cpu so I can't test if it is the cpu and not mobo that's crashing, but somehow I doubt it would be.
    I'd appreciate all answers.

Get a new cmos battery and replace the one on your mobo .
Theese sympthoms you have are pretty much the same with a dying battery .
I bought a new battery, but it has no effect. Forgot to mention in the first post that I tried updating BIOS to 1.C, but then it didn't find my HDs and it kept freezing still, so I changed it back to v1.2.
It seems that when I boot my comp after it's been off for a night or so, it freezes pretty soon in the post and I have to reboot something like 10-20 times before it stays on for 15 minutes to a few hours. But if my comp has been on for some time, even tho it's crashed and had frozen a night before, when I then reboot it usually stays on for sometime (15min to hours) without having to reboot 10-20 times (maybe only 1-5 times). It's weird. Somehow seems that it stays on longer when it's "warm".
Any ideas? This mobo is over 1,5 years old and I don't think there's any warranty left.

  • BFG 6800 Ultra causes K8N Neo2 Platinum to not POST - Problem finally resolved!

I'm able to run with an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and a PNY 6800 GT with no problems, but as soon as I plug in my BFG 6800 Ultra I can't get it to POST. The D-Bracket indicates it's doing "Processor Initialization". I don't see any output at all even though steps prior to "Processor Initialization" should be writing a few things to the screen. I should be getting plenty of power as I've got a good PSU and have two of the lines going to the BFG and nothing else. I've tried using several different combinations of lines as well so that doesn't appear to be the problem. I've already changed all the usual suspects in BIOS that might affect the AGP. I've also put the BFG in a crappy Dell system with a crappy PSU and it handled it just fine.
Anyone got any suggestions? I can't seem to find anyone else reporting this problem so apparently I'm the lucky one. Pleeeeeaaaaase! Someone help me fix my problem!

Keep in mind that not all Motherboards regulate their VCore and VDimm almost entirely from the 12v rail. However while it does task that rail it does provide a way for the manufacturer to provide more stable voltages and power. So different boards will react slightly different based even on the same exact set of parts. With so many parts needing 12v these days you have to make sure the PSU is up to supplying enough for everything.
The second thing is how differently each MB sets up in Bios. This can have quite an impact on RAM timings. Loosen up the timings a tad and maybe things will also go a tad easier. However if you can't get any poost then you may have to try an older stick of something like PC2100 or somesuch so that you can enter Bios and set appropriate timings for the RAM you want to use.
Third you can read the various stickies like Basec Building tips to help you get things properly setup.
