K8N Neo2 wierd boot / AMD driver ?

I just put this rig together and am still fiddling with things.  After playing with Corecenter and Speedfan and CnQ, and having Corecenter alarm continuously after installing Speedfan, uninstalling Corecenter, wondering if CnQ was working, etc., I ended up installing the AMD driver 1.2.2.2.  Things worked okay but when I reinstalled Corecenter it still alarmed continuously (I never could tell why or how to silence the alarm other than closing Corecenter).  I decided to uninstall the AMD driver to try to get back to my original configuration.  During the reboot after the uninstall the system acted a little funny.  Once in the Windows boot the screen went black and then back to the boot screen three times, and then went black and then back on while in the Windows screen before finally settling down.  CnQ would not work after this so I re-installed the AMD 1.2.2.2 driver.  Everything now works, but the weird boot up still happens with the screen going black several times in the process.  Also, when I go to Advanced settings in the Display Properties/Settings the computer seems to hang for several seconds, then the screen goes blank, comes back on and then displays the advanced screens.
BTW, my goal is to have a QUIET computer that will still perform okay for the games my kids play on this machine.
I have a couple of questions related to all this.
1)  Is the weird boot up and blank screen when going to the Advanced Display Settings related?
2) Can I uninstall the AMD driver and go back to the Windows driver (that did allow CnQ in the first place)?
3)  Finally, I would prefer to ditch Corecenter and use Speedfan.  During all this at some point Speedfan displayed info on my video board (voltages, temps) but does not show these now.   Is there a secret to getting Speedfan to report the video info?
Thanks for any help or insight you can give.  I have spent hours looking over the forums and have learned much!

Well, I think I've sorted most of this out now.  The weird boot up (blank screens) seems to have cured itself so I will leave well enough alone.  I'm still tinkering with Speedfan, and after perusing a bunch more threads on that, I think I am reporting the graphics card temps.

  • K8N Neo2, wierd problems

Hey all, I am new here
I looked through all the post but did not find anything related to my problem.
I have had  my rig almost a month without any problems but all of a sudden the computer just rebooted itself right in the middle of a simple (not 3d) game. It just kept rebooting after it reached the Windows logo and I would get error message like "IRQ was not less or equal" and the great Windows has stop your computer because of hardware failer, system will shut down. I tried to do a restore but XP could not find the HD, when I tried to run XP from CD it would not load due to hardware failer and I could not get into safe mode. Sometimes in the BIOs the BIOs would be corrubted, get those greek letters and things, just sometimes.
I stripped the thing down to just barebones, CPU, ram, vid and cleared cmos.
I first determined that the onboard IDE controller was bad, when I moved my HD to the PCI IDE controller the errors changed but XP kept restarting, but it now gave me a NT loader error which took me to the ram.
I pulled the ram and tried 1 stick at a time, turned out that 1 of the 512MB modules went bad, with that the computer started up and seemed to run fine. I connected everything back up and things still ran fine, just could not use the onboard IDE controller as Windows would not pick anything up on it. The next day I work on it some more, put the HD back onto the onboard IDE controller and it worked again.
But then my PS2 mouse port went dead, switched back to my USB and all seems well so far.
I used a VOM and checked the 3.3, 5 and 12 volt rails, all were within specs, no drops even under a stress test, CPU temps are fine.
Anyone else have seen anything like this
I have already received a RMA from Newegg on the MB but before I send it back I want to see if there is a solution to my problem.
My gut feeling tells me P/S but it test good. Been running 2 days now without any problems but I am worried that it may happen again.
My other thought is that maybe a zener diode, cap or voltage regulator on the MB may be going bad.
Any one have an idea about this, should I just send it back and get another MB or is this a growing MSI problem
    Thanks for any input.
    I have the following:
Windows XP home with SP2, fresh install and all updates
K8N Neo2 nForce3 Ultra, stock settings right now, BIO updated to 1.B0
    64 3500+ Venice, stock settings
1 Gig PATRIOT memory, 2*512MB running dual channel settings all auto/ stock
    420W Vantec P/S, 420a
    ATI 9550
    80 Gig WD
    20 Gig WD
    Sony CD-RW
    52x CD-Rom
PCI SiI 0680 Ultra 133 Medley ATA raid controller: Running slave HD and CD-rom on it, no raid setup

    JayBee;
I used the VOM whilel running the stress test with everything hooked up, even played intense 3d games with the VOM connected back-probing the pins 1,2 and 11 (orange wires) of the MB power connector for the 3.3 volt rail and then back-probing the molex cable for my 5 and 12 volt rails.
I cleared the cmos by by pulling the P/S cable then turning on the P/S to discharge caps, after this i used the "clear cmos" jumper and then went back in and set everything bak up.
As I have said, even with just a basic setup, CPU, 1 stick of ram and vid I still got the problems, it wasn't until I moved my C:\ HD to the PCI IDE controller and the one bad stick of ram that I could get XP to start up.
I moved the C;\ drive back to the onboard IDE and again XP would not load, the next day I tried it again and all of a sudden the onboard IDE were working again. The very next day while playing my PS2 mouse went dead, plugged my USB mouse in and have been playing ever since. Very wierd stuff, like a bad diode gate or somthing, don't really know.

  • K8N Neo2 Hang Boot Problem

First of all here is my configuration
    Athlon64 3500+ sk939
    MSI K8N Neo2
    2x512Mb DDR400 VData
    Asus V9999GT (Geforce6800GT)
    WD Raptor 72Gb 10k SATA
    Maxtor 200Gb SATA
I have two different type of problems:
    1. Sometimes the boot hang up in "Detecting IDE driver" section after the DVDRW detection (probably when is looking for SATA storage unit)
    2. WindowsXP boot stuck for 5-10 min with black screen and next boot up normaly
I've tryied a LOT of different bios settings, XP driver combination... it looks like that the second issue happens more frequently after nForce chipset driver installtion, but surely i cannot ignore them!
    Anyone can help me?

Are you using Nvidia IDE or Microsoft IDE driver ?
Nvidia IDE give some people problems - Test uninstall / install Nforce driver and uncheck Nvidia IDE.
Also be sure that all your IDE devices are healthy.
If nothing else of the "ordinarie" solutions helps.....
Remove any high powered case-fans that are connected directly to the MoBo´s 3-pin connector and connect them to the PSU 4-pin molex.
This happened to me once - Hang on IDE detection / long time before booting XP - Removed a Titan 120mm case-fan from
    Mobo 3-pin - Booted perfectly.

  • K8N Neo2 - WinXP and Raid driver problem

    I've K8n Neo2 Platinum version.
Tried to build up an array. But I cannot load the Nvidia storage controller (from floppy with F6 key) cause this file makes windows installer freeze after loaded all drivers (black screen with blinking underscore). What could I do? I've tried all solutions here with no luck at all

  • K8N Neo2 slow boot

    machine is a MSI K8N Neo Platinum with a 3500+ cpu, 1 gig hyper x PC3500, 9800pro, audigy2, seagate 120gig.
Problem is after I installed the nvidia platform drivers it started to have a slow boot problem.  I have xp set to the SOS boot, and the blue screen where it shows cpu and memory count it just sits there with no hard drive activity for about 1 min, then the hard drive starts flashing and it boots normally.   Any idea why it would pause like that?  I'm thinking driver issue but then more people would have this too.  I tried dumping xp and reloading, but using a different order of install,  I previously installed xp, then SP2 then the nvidia drivers.   Anyone else heard of this?

Yes Fine found it non of the these boot options checked on mine. Just Found it in Help:- Quote
    /so
Adds the /sos switch to the specified OSEntryLineNum, directing the operating system to display device driver names while they are being loaded.
There u go didnt know that
in your place i think id go back to the original XP drivers, as i said earlier there have been some issues with the NVIDIA Ide Drivers. No one seems to have percieved any performane issue (other than 1 works t'other dont)
Dont think its to do with the order of install, which can be made easier by slipsteaming SP2 (A forum search will give u some useful links for this). The order youve taken emulates that anyway.
Other People have played with the Master/Slave configuration on all drives, it seems that the Nvidia drivers dont always work with the Auto CLS setting
    best of luck

  • K8N Neo2 Plat. boot issue

My K8N Neo has worked flawlessly until recently.   During POST, right after it does the memory test and before IDE detection it reboots.  Will sometimes do this 2 or more times in a row before completing a POST and booting the OS.
I tried updating the bios (tried ver 1B and 1C - same issue)  currently running bios 1.9.  Also tried moving the memory to the other 2 open slots, same problem.   Memtest and Microsoft memory diag don't report any memory errors.
    system specs are:
    X2 3800
    1gb (2 -512mb)  OCZ gold EL
    BFG 6800 GT
    2 Seagate 120 sata drives
    1 Seagate 250 sata
    1 pioneer dvr-110
    1 benq 1640
    enermax 465 PSU
No new components have been added or changed recently.  I don't have the D-bracket installed but I will and see if it shows a problem.

Here is the response I got from MSI support :
"Please install only 1 pic of memory to test it first. I will recommend you to install the memorys on DIMM 1 and 3, it will led the memorys run in Dual Channel. It may increase the performance.
I think you may also need to change the memory timming in BIOS according to the spec of your memory.
If problem presists, please apply for an RMA and send back themotherboard. We can repair/replace it if it is within warranty. Thanks. "

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Not booting???

Somthing really strange has happened to my PC.  I had been using it on and off all day.  I shut it down as per normal at and went out for about 1/2 and hour to get some food for dinner.  Finish eating etc so its been about 1hr total.
I go to re-boot PC.  First page comes up says what ram I have etc etc and what devices are on my system, these are all correct.  Then it goes to next page, says 'Detecting Array' then it attempts to laod the Gigabyte somthing or other and says press Shift+F10 to configure.................
Thats it just hangs there.  So I thought I would go into BIOS just to double check stuff.  Re-set go into BIOS.  Just comes up with a load of garbled rubbish    So I reset again and try BIOS once more, this time I just get a blue screen with the border and thats it
What I dont understand is how it detects everything thats in my system if BIOS is screwed??
I checked on the D-Bracket.  It is stopped on the following 'Boot Attempt - Description is 'This will set low stack and boot via INT 19h'
Stuff  I have tried so far is.  Clearing CMOS by moving the jumper on JBAT1 this had no effect other than resetting my BIOS and this shows when it boots on the first page.  Removed both ram sticks and tried one at a time, the PC still hangs at the same place.  I disconnected all my HDD except my OS one this had no effect.
My main OS is on a SATA drive but it was working and has been working fine for ages so I dunno what the hell has gone wrong    Anyone got any ideas?  Could the HDD that my OS is on have failed and caused the above? I dont understand why I cant access the BIOS yet it detects everything in the system.  Also can anyone explain what it is doing at the point of freezing up.  I dont know what the description for the D-Bracket readout means.
Many Thanks to those who reply

I had tried both of those but to no avail.
Anyway here was the problem just incase anyone else gets it!  On returning home I could actually access BIOS at last
The PC also booted a little further and gave some kind of PXE error which pointed at a media device and a faulty cable (bit strange).  I have another PC at home so went online and did some searching.  Turns out somehow the PC had made itself try to boot via a network.  Clearing CMOS would not resolve the issue what I had to do was go into BIOS and load the 'Safe-Defaults'  Re-boot PC and all is well again!
I dunno why the BIOS refused to load yesterday maybe it got a bit confused which is why it started trying to boot from a network in the first place.  Anyway I am happy now as I thought it was gonna start costing money when it first went down.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat Boot Issues. Bad Flash?

Well i just got my board in the other night and i had everything up and running and wasn't too satisfied with the OC on the memory scores i was getting so i flash to bios 1.55 from one of the sites linked from here.  Everything went fine on the flash with no apparent errors but now when i try to boot it gives me the normal boot beep then right after a  tiny faint beep and it locks up at the Platinum screen where you can hit DEL or TAB to post.  I flashed from a win98 virtual ram drive to avoid the issues of a bad floppy.  There were no errors on flash at all and it rebooted itself at the end.  I've tried to reset the CMOS many times and still nothing.  I've tried changing out mem, psu, vid cards, and other parts just to see if i can get past the screen but it won't budge.  Anyone heard of any simular problems and if so how can i fix it short of rma?

Unfortunately i've tried the bad flash for my bios and nothing happens at all.  The Floppy never even starts and neither does the light on it to read from the floppy.  I left it running for atleast 15 mins once and nada.  Wish there was an easy way to fix it heh.  Guess i've learned my lesson to triple check before flashing.  Any other ideas?

  • K8N Neo2 USB boot problem

Hi, I'm trying to fix my computer (it freezes on every operating system all of a sudden), and I need to use the USB boot to load Linux Live and Windows installation (both froze as well). The problem is that it'll take the USB just once in a while, and that is causing me a big loss of time to make the tests and a headache. First thing I did was memtest and I found corrupt memory, thus I replaced the DIMM. But the freezing is still there.
Do you have any hint? I know it's a double question but at least if the USB boot was working all the time it'd be a lot faster to load stuff and try to fix the problem.
    Thanks for your hints!

    512 mb ddr PC3200
    Geforce4 MX 440 AGP

  • K8N Neo2-FX with AMD 64 3000 ethernet problem

I just recently installed windows xp pro 64-bit and most things are working fine except that it will not recognize that the motherboard has an ethernet adapter.  The newest drivers are installed, and that is the extent to which my knowledge is based.  Any help would be much appreciated

make a memtest cd and check for memory errors
if you're using a sata hd then make sure you have the correct drivers

When i connect all my hdd's the computer goes blank in the winxp startup installation, just before i get to chose where to install winxp pro, i stoppes to respond, and that is when i load both driver's on the diskette, the raid and the storage driver that is, hope you guy's can help.

    1*250 Gb sata Wd
    1*120 Gb ide Maxtor
    1*120 Gb ide Seagate
    sony Dvd burner
before they werent raid'ed and every thing was ok, now i raid those 2 160gb seagate, and when all is connected, it stoppes to respond.

Don't know if this helps, but your getting it anyway
When installing windows don't have any Hard drives in front of your raid array, assuming that's where your putting your OS . Unplug them whilst windows is installed. This is due to the fact that windows places %systemdrive% as the first drive it sees (e.g 1'st master) , meaning it will be C: and hosts the os boot files .
    (Taken from Syar2003)
Therefore if installing your raid on Sata 3/4 unplug all IDE Hard Drives plus SATA 2/3.
Once windows is installed Plug 'em all back in

  • Which power supply for k8n neo2 Platinum

I need to buy a new power supply for my computer. With the ATX12V v2.2 standard and ATX12V 2.01 and the "no -5v on new psu's" issue I'm at a loss as to what to look for. I have looked and cannot find what "standard" (is that even the correct term?) the k8n neo2 supports.
My main requirement is that the psu be 550-650 watts and have modular cables. I know someday I will have to upgrade my system to PCI-E and modern components, so I would like a PSU that would work now and in the future.
Could someone point me in the right direction?
    Many thanks
    system spec's
    Motherboard- MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
CPU- AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core 4800 939 socket
    Memory-CORSAIR 2X1G Twinx2048
Video- ATI HIS 4670 1GB AGP
HD- Seagate 100 gb 7200 rpm
    Drives CD-DVD and CD-RW
PSU- Ultra X Connect 500W ATX
    Sound- Creative SB Audigy2 Gamer
OS- WinXP Home SP3 32 bit

Why do you need 550-650W or is that just because of future needs? I would suggest one of the Corsair +12V single rail modular PSU's if you insist on the modular design. Check newegg for what they have for modular in the Corsair lineup. I'm sure you're aware that their price is considerably higher than the non-modular. K8 MB's that needed -5V are the early ones that had Creative Sound Blaster onboard audio.

        *  Was: $139.99
        * $109.99
        * After $10.00 Rebate
        * $10.18 Shipping
That's what it is now but if you don't need it in a big hurry you can probably wait a while and get for the same price but with free shipping.
Edit: Gee, Ultra with blown caps, I just happen to have a xPRO 800W that blew some caps, repaired it and started going bad again and then got my TX650 to replace it. Got it for $70 after rebate (which I haven't received yet) by waiting for the right price, rebate and free shipping. VX550 would have been good enough but at the time I got the TX650 at a lower price.

  • Weird multipel error with K8N Neo2 and XMS Pro 3200LL

Hi everyone, i recently got a winchester 3200 running on my K8N Neo2 Platinum 54G board and i discovered a very weird thing and im not the only one having this problem either with this mobo/cpu. Its a bit hard to explain but i´ll giv it a try.
I can start with my current spec...
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum 54G
    AMD A64 3200+ Winchester
Corsair TwinX 1024 XMS Pro 3200LL
    2x Maxtor diamondmax s-ata 80BG
    Gainward 2400GT GS (6800GT)
    Coolermaster Hyper 6 cpu cooler
    Tagan 480w psu (28A on 12V)
Then i can continue with saying that this problem that occurs with my corsair memorys dose not happend with Adata vitesta 566 memorys.
I figure your getting curious by now
Well heres the deal. In normal frequencys, multipliers and dividers this setup runs just fine, but when i try to oc it past 220Mhz FSB only one multiplier will work, regardless of HTT multiplier or any other bios setting. The only cpu multipel that it will boot with in 133 divider is X5 over 220Mhz FSB, with the 166 divider the only cpu multipel that works then is x6, and only the x4 cpu multipel works in 200 divider. Keep in mind that this didnt happend with adata vitesta sticks, it ran fine with every multipel/divider config...
Oddly enough it works fine in 100 divider on the memorys, every cpu multipel works then past 220Mhz FSB. So far i have gotten my winnie stable at 2,6GHz in standard vcore (with adata vitesta in 200 divider or with corsair running in 100 divider, 290x9 on the cpu).
The divider table is as follows with the corsair sticks   :
100 divider= every cpu multiplier bootable
133 divider= only x5 cpu multipel is bootable
166 divider= only x6 cpu multipel is bootable
200 divider= only x4 cpu multipel is bootable
With Adata vitesta 566 the following applys:
100 divider= every cpu multiplier bootable
133 divider= every cpu multiplier bootable
166 divider= every cpu multiplier bootable
200 divider= every cpu multiplier bootable
Could someone please tell me what causes this I realize that it´s because of some incompatabillity between my corsair sticks and the mobo/cpu, but what?

im having the same problem running 2x512 crucial value select 3200.
with everything at default speeds,  cant lower memory speed or comp crashes before windows loads.
if i take out one stick and just run 512, then i can lower memory to 100. but thats it, except i can do the speeds that u listed with the specific cpu multiplier.  with 2 sticks in though i cannot lower the memory speed at all.  i cant find any fixes for this, if anyone has any clues please help!
    running k8n neo2 plat.  1.4 stock bios.  winchester 3000+.
