K8N Neo2 Windows XP Boot problems

I've recently built a new machine based on the K8N Neo 2  & Athlon 64 3500 and am having intermittant problems during boot  into Windows XP.
Basically the machine seems to hang just as it gets to the 'Windows XP' logo.  The screen looks blank, but if you look very carefully the logo is displayed very faintly.  I have tried connecting the startup disk to both SATA1 and SATA3 with the same results as at first I thought it may be some kind of driver problem.  I didn't have to install any SATA drivers during the XP install which surprised me.
I have also run Memtest86 on the two sticks of 512Mb PC3200 Geil Ram which seemed to test OK.
Once running the machine is stable, its just annoying that it may take 2 or 3 tries to get it up and running.
Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
The full spec of the machine is as follows:
K8N Neo 2
Athlon 64 3500
Geil Value PC3200 512Mb x2
Maxtor Diamond Max 9 80Gb (Boot Disk)
Maxtor Diamond Max 10 200Gb
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600XT
Andi

I will not install the nForce IDE drivers on the (I guess soon) reinstall. I've read that the PS/2 keyboard also could be the badguy in this weird boot problem but I cant understand why and how the keyboard could add time to the bootup sequence only sometimes, I guess that it has something to do with the XP keyboard driver ??..
Anyone with any other tips is welcome. Other than this weird problem my system runs perfect. MSI Core Center now tells me that my CPU temp is 45% (CPU speed 1004) (Downloading stuff but not doing anything else), CPU speed is according to XP 1.79Ghz and I use the Cool 'n' Quiet function, On what temp should I start to become alarmed and is there some way to setup something in the bios to shut down or warn me when and if the CPU gets to hot ?..
Thanks for helping a new   MSI user out

    hello guys
i hope you can help me out here
english is my second language so please bear whit me
first my specs in a nutshell:
    k8n neo2 (s939)
    amd64 3500
    geforce fx5800
    the problem is:
every time i turn the power off i need to flash the bios to get trough his post.
if i reboot from windows (not shutdown but reboot) then it runs trouhg his post normaly, but if i shutdown not.
it simply does nothing if i press the power botton.
on the d-bracklet i see 4 green or 4 red lichts so that must be wrong too i think right?
if annyone have a sulution: thank you verry much
ps: i am running bios version: 1.4

By flash the BIOS do you mean reset CMOS? i.e. you switch a jumper for a few seconds?
If so you have the same problem as me in this post: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum wont boot without clearing CMOS first.
I changed the HT in BIOS to 4x and have been stable ever since.

  • Windows 2000 boot problem

I have just moved my system to the new MX-6585 board - Did an Windows 2000 "upgrade" to initiate total hardware scan.
System works ok, when it has booted, but booting is sooo slow.
Found a Microsoft article describing the problem:
    SYMPTOMS
After you choose to start Windows from the Boot menu, you may experience a long delay (or pause) before your computer finishes starting. Note that this delay may range from 10 seconds to a minute. Also, this delay occurs before the Starting Windows progress bar appears, and your computer may appear to stop responding (hang) during this time.
    CAUSE
This behavior can occur if Windows is installed on a drive or a partition to which Windows cannot gain access with normal Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) INT-13 or INT-13 extension calls. When Windows Setup determines it cannot use BIOS calls to start, it uses scsi() or signature() syntax in the Boot.ini file instead of multi() syntax.
My question is: Does MX-6585/BIOS in any way hinder the INT-13 calls to my Adaptec 2940???

Thanks! I sent the following message:
There are no IDE devices in my system, only SCSI. My hd is an IBM Ultrastar 36XP DRHS-36D. When I start the system up, the SCSI & MSI BIOS screens display normally, then BOOT.INI appears. After I select one of my NT-type OS's (NT4, W2K, WXP), there is a 30-second delay between the time I press the Enter key at the BOOT.INI screen and the time the OS actually starts to boot. (The BOOT.INI countdown time is limited to 5 seconds. I am *not* talking about this time.)
Since the same hardware was transferred from another installation (with a non-MSI mb) in which the same Adaptec drivers were used but this 30-second delay did not occur, the delay appears to be due to the MSI BIOS. Interestingly, W98 is also installed on this hd and it appears in the BOOT.INI list. When I start up W98, the 30-second delay does not occur -- as soon as I press the Enter key, W98 starts to boot.
Other end users have complained about this same boot delay. See the post "Windows 2000 boot problem" found in the MSI user forum here: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/viewindex.php?threadid=6970&boardid=10&page=1
I'd estimate our chances of success at 1%. Still, it's far better to complain and not be heard than never complain. That way, we get to complain even more.

it is not OS issue, because on this every other start, i also cannot use keyboard to enter bios (so it isn't working BEFORE the sata drive even starts)
ALSO, when shutting down windows, the "It is now safe to shut your computer down" microsoft screen appears, and the softoff doesn't kick in.... you must use power button...

  • New CPU, Msi K8n neo2 platinum - no boot!

    Greetings!
    I got the following components:
    *MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum -54g MB
    *4 x 512mb Geil Value Ram
    *Gainward 7800GS+ Bliss 512mb AGP
    *Samsung Spinpoint 500gb SATA HD
    *Corsair 620HX (620W) PSU
*CPU AMD Opteron 180 Dual Core (upgrade from AMD 3000+ Winchester)
I recently upgraded my PC with a new HD, more ram, new CU Fan/heatsink - on an AMD 3000+ (Winchester). PC wouldn't boot - I did however manage to fix it. I think it was because of the ram, one of the bricks had some dust on it. Since then, my pc has worked 100%...
Today, however, I got a new PSU and CPU in the mail! A Corsair 620W PSU and an AMD OPTERON 180 Dual. I carefully cleaned the surface on the heatsink etc, and applied an appropriate amount of "Arctic Alumina" on the CPU/heatsink (as followed per instructions from Arctic). When I have connected everything, and fire my pc up - it just won't boot.. (The monitor won't light up).
Since then, I have carefully checked all wires, unplugged/replugged etc.
    But it just won't boot!
I do have the latest bios (1.0D), so it should support my CPU.
I should mention some "weird" things, though. When I try to boot up, everything seems normal (All fans are running), but there are no lights on my case! And I can't turn off the PC while holding down the "power" button on my case. I can't reset either.. as soon as I turn the PC on (by turning on the PSU power switch), the PC starts running. Normally I would have to push the button on my case. ALSO: I have cleared CMOS, still a black screen. And I have tried 2 different monitors, so I know it aint that either.
My old PSU was a Chieftec 360W one (and my case is a Chieftec also). The old PSU was connected to "SFAN2" on my MB,.. my new PSU isn't connected to any "SFAN" at all.. I doubt that has anything to do with the problem though?
Any suggestions on what I might do ?
Edit: D-bracket shows this (Yellow, red, red, yellow):
    BIOS Sign On
    - This will start showing information about logo, processor brand name, etc... - It stops here. No boot screen

remove power cord from the PSU(else will not work) and Clear CMOS Guide.
leave one memory stick only in a 1st DIMM slot near to CPU socket and try to boot.
    Done & done.
    Still no boot screen :(

  • K8N Neo2: How to boot after bad overclock settings?

Does anyone know - is holding the <insert> key down whilst booting supposed to work on the K8N Neo2?  i.e. reset the clock speed back to safe settings?
I have a new 4800+ processor that I have been trying and it doesn't like high memory bus speeds.  I keep trying an overclock setting (in the BIOS) and then finding it won't post.  Then I have to clear the cmos and re-enter all of the bios settings from scratch again.  Its becoming a right pain in the backside, to be honest.
I thought you were supposed to be able to just hold the insert key down on power up and it should boot with safe settings?
Or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks
    Chip

The insert thing only worked for me a few times. If I recall correctly, you need to power down everything, including the PSU itself. Then, hold the insert key, power up the PSU and then hit the power button on the case...The only thing is, and I don't know if it is BIOS version related or what, it will sometimes power on when you hit the switch on the back of the PSU.
If you are messing with it that much, then I suggest using some Windows apps to OC. Get the BIOS set up with some decent OC'd settings, stable ones. Then use apps like Core Center(voltages), A64 Tweaker(memory) and Clock gen(clock speed) to work things out in Windows. Once you have some good settings going in Windows, restart and set it up in the BIOS. This way, if you set something wrong in Windows and the PC hangs or restarts on its own, it will restart with the good BIOS settings that you know will work...Then you make note of what not to do, lol, and continue on...I hope that helps a little...Good Luck.

  • K8n Neo2 OCZ Memory Detection Problem

    1.Product Type: K8n Neo2 Platinum

    4.CPU Type: Athlon 64 3200
    5.Memory Type: OCZ4001024ELDCPE-K 2 x 512MB
    6.Power Supply Type: EnnermaxNoiseTakerII 485w
    7.Operating System: XP/Vista Dual Boot
    8.Problem Description:
I have just acquired the memory speciified above, but the system will not POST with this RAM fitted on the mainboard.
The RAM above is certified to run with my mainboard (K8n Neo2).
I have other RAM from OCZ which works fine.
    This RAM is:
    1 x 512MB OCZ400512ELPE
    1 X 512MB OCZ400512EL
I have spoken to OCZ support and done the following:
    Reset the CMOS
    Increased voltage for the DRAM
Tried each of the new 512MB DIMMs individually.
But this has not helped and OCZ have no more suggestions other than to ensure that I have the latest BIOS, Which I think Id do.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    hi there,
what is your RAM which you are trying to run? is it OCZ4001024ELDCPE-K 2 x 512MB matched pair?
ensure you have used mainboard DIMM slots: DIMM1 & DIMM2
where DIMM1 is the 1st DIMM slot close to CPU socket.
have you tested each of memory sticks individually using DIMM1 slot? if yes what are the results?
remove power cord from the PSU and Clear CMOS
    re-try to boot.
you can setup memory vcore manually from BIOS to 2.75V and Command Rate to T2 (all memory timings leave it to Auto) and re-test.
get a copy of Memtest86 and ensure no errors will comes during testing.

  • MSI KSN Neo2 USB floppy boot problem

    Hi all,
I've just put together a PC using the MSI K8N Neo2 to replace my gigabyte. I've got an option on these boards (nforce3) to boot from a USB floppy and did so several times with the gigabyte (memtest and 6800ultra bios flash). For some reason however, the MSI refuses to do so. I get to POST and then I get a "detecting IDE drives...." and that's it. The machine freezes. I can't F10 or DEL, I have to Ctrl, Alt Del and pull out the floppy before it will post. I've done the obvious things like 1st in Boot order, floppy seek etc, as far as I'm aware everything's the same as the gigabyte. If I plug it in once in windows, it's recognised and works fine. Any suggestions would be very welcome.
    Many Thanks in advance.
    Roch

I don't know if I can give any more details,
    -MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum 54G SOCKET 939 NFORCE3
    -AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8GHz Boxed (Winchester, 0.09µ)
-Memory 512MB/333mhz don't know more about that
-Power 350W should be enough to get to bios
    -Keyboard some Logitech
    -Mouse: Not connected
    -Monitor: it works
-Gainward Geforce 3 ti 200 golden edition
    -Hardrive/Floppydrive not connected
When I boot I see Gainward logo then monitor goes black (not power save just black), when i reset it will happen again. Diagnostic leds does some tests but hangs on "Sing on bios". I have tried to reset with jumpers, different cables with differend harddrives. Different memory slots. Tonight different memories. Motherboard and prosessor is 1 day old every else is from my old computer which was 2000+ Athlon with epox via kt333. Don't know what to test anymore and I don't have any spare parts to test what is broke or is it just memories? but why it don't hang on memory test etc.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum 54G BIOS problem

    I recently bought a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum-54G mainboard with W7025NMS v1.3  092204 revision of BIOS.
AMD Athlon64 3000+ 939 is installed on the mainboard, with 2x512 GEIL PC3200 memory modules in dual channel configuration working on default frequency of 200MHz. CPU is recognized correctly as AMD Athlon64 3000+ on startup.
Mainboard’s BIOS seems to be corrupted. In Cell Menu options, in the upper left part of the screen (printed blue) are processor and DDR working timings:
Current CPU Clock 1810MHZ, Current DDR Clock 200MHz.
Aggressive Timings and Dynamic Overclocking values are [Disabled] (processor working on its defaulf settings); Spread Spectrum is [Disabled] while all DRAM Configuration settings are set to [Auto].
While entering HT frequency settings, (locked to [x5])  there are no other values to select – empty, and there is no way to leave it (ESC doesn’t help, the only thing possible to do is to reset the computer by pressing the Reset button on the chassis), but  the HT frequency settings were enabled when I loaded Fail-Safe settings, offering [1x], [1.5x], [2x], [2.5x], [3x], [4x], [5x].
Adjust CPU Ratio settings offer only [StartUp], [x4]~[x9] values, but as I understood by reading the manual there should be [StartUp], [x4]~[x20].
CPU Voltage, Memory Voltage and AGP Voltage are set to default.
CPU-Z, as well as SiSoft Sandra 2004 and SiSoft Sandra 2005 and MSI CORE CELL show that processor works at a core speed ~1005MHz, showing multiplier locked on x5.0 and HTT locked at ~200MHz, while the voltage is ~1.05V!
I downloaded the latest BIOS revision (v1.4), did the BIOS flash, but the problem remains!
    Anybody, help!

    CPU Ratio settings
AMD64 CPOU's have a lock on CPU ratios which varies according to the specification of the chip. therefore the multiplier available in your bios stops at the max multiplier allowed by amd for your cpu.
As an example i'm running a 3200 754 which has a maximum muliplier of 11 so that is the max i see in bios.

  • GX623 Windows 7 boot problem

Hi guys, i recently have to reinstall OS on my laptop, and now i am facing "really long boot" problem, all drivers are correctly installed (at least i think so), i am fighting with this problem hole day, so i am pretty mad and tired right now, hope you can give me some advice
here is a boot trace picture hope it can share some light on this
i already reinstalled windows seven 3 times today, i tried to update bios to the latest version, even re-flash EC, all with no change :(
to describe this problem, bios post goes OK, no errors, all fast and smooth, as soon i see windows logo animating on my screen my HDD "stops" working (there is no hdd activity for a long period of time) well that can be seen on trace, and then after 90 seconds (at least trace shows that) it starts booting like before, system loads, and everything is working as it should

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum cold boot problem with 165 opteron?

I have this board and have a cold boot problem with my opteron. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Its starting to get very anooying.
    K8N NEO4 Platinum
    165 opty dual core
    2X1GB Ballistix PC4000
    160GB sata2
    7800GTX
    X-Fi platinum
    600 watt seasonic PSU

Well I am running them at the rated speed of 250 and the rated timings of 3-4-4-10 on the rated 2.8 volts. Ballistix have been known to die quickly when you throw to many volts at them for some reason. I dont get the cold boot problem with the OCZ. Once I finally get it to boot with the Ballistix it works just fine but the next morning I play hell to get it to boot again. I dont even get the main screen to let me get into bios. It just stays black. I have done all kinds of stress testing and ran memtest with no problems. I am really at a loss here.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum RAID Boot Issue...

    Hi everyone,
I am running two WD 120gb drives in single-drive mode.  Everything is working fine.  My issue is that every time I boot, I have to wait nearly 10 seconds for a message that says 'Detecting Array' just before it loads WinXP.  The thing is, I have RAID disabled in the BIOS.  How do I get rid of this annoying boot message?
    Any help would be appreciated!

The are still making the K8N Neo2- F which is the same thing except no firewire and one gigabyte lan instead of two lans.  Otherwise, same mobo with same bios.  MSI 7025.
or if you´re lucky and your reseller has them in stock..that was my case    wus supposed to change my cpu cooler(amd athlon 64 3500+(venice) ) removed everything...to note...I did this with another friend..so after a little while when all the things were on place I hade to take a number 2, when I got back the comp was all fixed and my friend asks me to start it..I start it and nothing happens..turns out that he had used all of the copper paste and drenched the socket and the spu...so i tested the cpu and it had survived, but the motherboard was all dead..so I rma´d it as u guys say and I got the same modell back and everything worlks perfectly...and as for my friend...he has two blue eyes @ the moment :P

  • Report: K8N Neo3-F Cool boot problem!!!!

    Hi all,
I've got Cool boot problem on my new K8N Neo3-F. The power is often turned off suddenly just after I turned on the power switch. All components are shutted down while the power led blink. It's unable to turn off completely by pushing power switch for awhile. I usualy have to disconect the power cord then clear cmos and cool boot again.
This problem seem to occur more oftenly when using SATA HDD. Should it be attituted to a bug bios?

Something along what you already have on +3.3v/+5v but 20A or more on +12v (single +12v PSU model) .
But when the time comes to replace PSU it's wise to get one that has enough power that will serve the next build or upgrade also .
Not leaving you again in the same situation you are now one more time down the line .
Note that HD's are notirious power eaters .They all may have nice numbers from the manufacturers for write/read consumption
but it's not many that specifies spinup consumption which always are altleast 2-3 times the amount of read/write power demands.
Tagan 2power/2force is nice and is applicable to both 20/24 pins systems and has the ability to run the +12v line as one combined or dual .
They also come in different sizes (max wattage) .

  • Windows 7 boot problems after partitioning Mac Disc

    Hi
    I got a big Problem. I installed Windows 7 with Bootcamp. I have a 600Gb Mac Partition and a 150Gb Bootcamp Partition.
After Configuring Windows, I switched to the Mac OSX Snow Leopard System. I changed the Main Partition of 600Gb into 3 smaller ones. After this change I can't boot Windows 7 anymore. With the Option Key it doesn't show me the Bootcamp Partition. In the Sys. Preferences under Startup Disk it show me the Windows on Bootcamp Partition, but when I click restart, it shows me only the No System Disk Boot black screen.
I read a bit in the forum, but I haven't found the problem yet.
    Thx for your help
    NESTi

Your problem is quite clear and simple: you added and changed the parition numbers and table.
You want a linux style with a slice for swap, root, usr and data?
Use Mac's new Recovery - command d on startup.
Enable viewing hidden partitions in Disk Utility.
Use Windows DVD to fix and edit BCD
What you did is not supported. I know XP can't boot unless it is partition #4 or lower.
There is 200MB GPT, 128MB EFI, HFS+ 600GB would have been 3rd but GPT is zero, only now you have three where there was one.
Manage all partitions with Disk Utility in OS X
Check partition table health in Lion's Disk Utility
BCD for Windows 7 and Lion
