K8N Neo2 with AMD 4200 X2 - Memory config.

Will my AMD 4200X2 allow me to use 4 sticks of 512 MB on the K8N Neo2 motherboard?  I know that there have been issues using 4 sticks on with AMD 64 3500 chips, but I don't know if this still applys to the newer X2s.
Thanks for any info on this.

The user manual for the Neo 2 says you cannot do it because it was written before Venice and later cpus, so it is outdated in that it does not recognize that 4 identical dual sided PC3200 dimms will run at 400 and not just 333 with the newer cpus that came out after the user guide (manual) was written.
Edit- LairdD- You miss the point -- you don't have to overclock to do it, you just need identical dimms and the right cpu.
No, qyx, you missed the point, uhh... twice.   My previous post referenced the AMD [26094.pdf] doc on the subject... which you appear not to have read... not the MSI manual.
The newer >=Rev E CPUs have the same speed specs as previous ones on fully populated ranks in both channels.  I was not talking about overclocking in any way or form; what I was saying is that if your memory DIMM spec is overrated, i.e. above PC3200, you may be able to do better than the AMD specs simply because you're then underclocking the memory.  While I haven't tried it I seriously doubt that you can get DDR400/1T with 4 full ranks on both channels.
There's also the point that even if the DIMM mfr has the same identical part number, the chances of getting an exact match on DIMMs purchased a year or so apart is slim.  It's also wise, when considering that a memory upgrade may be contemplated in future, to buy single rank DIMMs if available.

Well you do realise that each core reads slightly different. However as you posted no specs we can only read and ignore yet another "Lack of Information" type post.
I don't see what my specs have to do with the cpu temp sensor jumping back n forth 4c every 10 seconds. I said I have a k8n neo2 with a venice 3000+

4 double sidded dimms will run as pc 2700 ie 333 not 400
The truth is this motherboard/chipset only supports DDR400 speeds... and almost everybody exceeds that speed.
Anandtech review from June last year says the followin:
    Quote
The MSI K8N Neo2 was able to run with all 4 DIMM slots at the same aggressive 2-2-2-10 settings used for 2 DIMMs. However, as we have seen on the other 939 boards running all 4 DIMMs, Command Rate must be reduced to 2T when filling both Dual Channels.
So its the price to pay perhaps when using all dimms, unless a new BIOS would have changed that. I doubt that, as this happens to all 939 motherboards as well regardless of the chipset.

  • New K8N Neo2 Platinum, AMD 64 3500+ sytem freezing

I have posted to a couple of forums and still can't get this problem resolved, hope you guys can help.
I put together a new system last Friday night and spent all weekend trying to fix it. I ended up with 2 bad power supplies, one fresh from the store was dead, but got that resolved. Got the system up and running, got online, surfing and FREEZE..everything stopped.  Rebooted, 5 minutes later, same thing, over and over again.
Tried checking memory, it's fine, both sticks, power supply is fine, everything seems to be running fine except it keeps freezing after about 5 minutes.
I wonder if it's a bad board, so I tried to RMA it with the vendor and they want me to try outside the case to see if it won't freeze there, haven't had the time yet cause I'm working, will try that tonight.
Also, one guy on a different board suggested that I try a fresh install of windows xp as the old drivers might be interfering with the new drivers. I will try that tonight also.
If anyone can give me any other suggestions, I would appreciate it. If I can't get this resolved, I'm going to send back the board for a new one.
    Below are my specs:
    AMD 64 3500+
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo
    2 x 512 Kingston ddr400 (pc3200)
    antec true power 480
wd 120gb hd, wd 80gb hd
    cdrw generic, dvdrw generic
    bfg 6800 oc video card
    thanks

Thank you both for your posts, they are both informative and I will be using your information Friday night. I'm just so tired after work, I don't want to get part way into it and have to leave it for the next day, I have to get up at 3am everyday and get home around 6-7pm and I'm beat!
So, Friday after work, I'm going to start with just the basics and go from there, using all the information I've been getting from this board and a couple of others. Seems like the best thing to do is, start with barebones, reset cmos, reset battery and install fresh windows os.
I will post Friday after I start and hopfully I will get this problem  fixed.
    thanks again

  • K8N Neo2 with BFG 6800GT OC

I have had a hard  time with this board and its problems.  I have a fix for two problems I have had with this board.
If you have a BFG 6800GT OC or Ultra OC on K8N Neo2. You will need to turn off AGP Write Fast and change the AGP voltage to 1.6 to all the system to play any game correctly. Also turn off SATA DMA mode in the BIOS. This also will cause unforseen blue screens and Lockups.
I hope this will help anyone that has been fighting the problems with this board such as I have.

    Quote
I also have been having problems with the K8N Neo 2 Platinum and a BFG 6800 GT OC. The problem I am having is the PC locks up only on certain games such a Far Cry, Vice City, and Halo Demo (also any of the game demos on the BFG disk). More preciesly, the video will lock up, but I can still hear the sound (music) continuing to play. Doom3 works fine though as does Castle Wolfenstien. All my Windows apps also work fine.
I've tried swapping the BFG into an NForce 2 system of mine, where all games run fine with the BFG. I've put an ATI 9800 Pro agp card into the K8N motherboard, and all games run fine. I've replaced the Enermax 475 PSU connected to the K8N, with an Enermax 651 PSU and I still get lockups in games. I've set the AGP voltage to 1.70 and fast writes off as per BFG techs and have tried several different versions of drivers. I've swaped the dual Ram chips to differect sockets (timing 2 2 2 5, voltage 2.7). No other card is in the system (yet). The BIOS is as it came, ver 1.4.
Any ideas what to try next?
I have had my fair share of issues with my 6800 GT.  EQ2, WoW and Doom3 all paused for 5-10s randomly.  The only way I was able to solve this was to clock back the GT to the standard GT speed of 350MHz.  You can use RivaTuner to do this, its available at http://www.guru3d.com.

  • MSI K8N 2 NEO Platinum with AMD 4200+ X2 Machine Check Exception

    Greetings,
I recently bought a 4200+ x2 and when i replaced my Venice 3500+ by it i get a Machine Check Exception when windows xp Professionnel is about to load. But when i go back to my Venice everything working properly. any ideas what could cause such a trouble?
my PSU is a ANTEC 550W, i don't think i'm in need of any more power and more i got it recently, so it's almost new and never got problem with it before.
    thanks.

I think that you have to cleanly reinstall your Windows XP Pro operating system for it to recognize consistently dual core cpu.  What bios do you use?  Does CPU-Z say that you have one processor or two in Processor Selection at bottom of CPU Tab?  Good luck.

  • Who is stuck at 260fsb with K8N neo2 with bios1.2

No matter what i do it willnot post at 270 fsb with 133 or 166 mem divider :/.  I droped the cpu multi down to 8 the HTT down to 1.  If your running faster then 260fsb can you please post your bios setting.  Also if anybody has the same problem please post maybe if it is a bios fault there fix it.

    Hi Bosskiller,
Sorry if I didn't express myself clearly. First of all I need to know if this memory is compatible with my system without overclocking. O/cing comes after I know it's compatible.
So, what do we do about my question? If we keep it in this section of the forum, maybe many people will not even see it, only the overclockers?
I can post it again to the AMD board if necessary, and keep it also here?
    Regards,
    Jose

  • Random system freezes with K8N Neo2...

    Hi!
    I've got the following problem:
My Pc freezes randomly, i.e. I'm booting my system, WinXP starts and I'm on my desktop and then it freezes and nothing happens( and I did nothing!). I have to reboot my machine. Then, the pc boots up and everything works fine (mostly). So, I can work with it maybe for a few hours or a few days and everything works nearly perfect. But then, it freezes again and I have to reboot it. Sometimes, mostly when I'm playing ut2k4 or other games,  it freezes after a few minutes or a few hours of playing and I have to reboot, but not only one time; the pc boots up, I start the game again, play a few minutes and it freezes again. (this situation repeats itself several times). Or, I start the game and everything works fine for some days!
I'm frustrated because I can't play what I want or even work because of those freezes. I tried some things, like reinstalling new drivers for my mb but nothing helped. I cleared cmos and made new settings in my bios but this also didn't brought the wanted results. And now, I'm at a point where I don't know what I also can do.
Maybe a bios update would help, but I read some posts here where people have made 'bad' experiences with the new bios version, so I'm careful.
My PC isn't overclocked and my temps are  ~50 idle  ~59 working
    My system:

I also thought it could be my power supply, so I bought a new one "Antec True Power 480", but it wasn't my power supply....

:rolleyes:My computer just froze the missus out and I got an ear full “I thought you said that this one’s better than the old one?” she wasn’t too happy when I told her to reset it, as she lost all of her email she was typing.
Also I found some links to similar problems, still cant figure if it’s a hardware fault or a software one

  • K8N Neo2 strange behavior with SATA enable DMA transfers

K8N Neo2 with Maxtor 6B250S0 250GB SATA drive on SATA3 and Maxtor 6B200S0 200GB SATA drive on SATA4.  No RAID.  I use SATA3/4 because I have read that SATA1/2 are not locked with the PCI bus.  I do overclock a bit.     I have SATA1/2 disabled in the bios.
The 250GB drive is for my applications, and the 200GB drive is for holding backups.  I use Drive Image 2002 to create image files of my partitions.  To create an image of my main partition, Drive Image boots to DOS.  I noticed that the drive performance under DOS was slow.  After a bit of testing, I discovered that enabling DMA transfers for SATA fixes the problem.  This makes sense, because under Windows the IDE drivers provide DMA access, but under DOS the hardware itself needs to provide DMA function.  But here is what's strange... I have to enable DMA for both SATA channels!     So even though I am using only one of the channels, and have the other disabled in the bios, I have to enable DMA transfers for both channels in order to have good performance under DOS.
This occurs under both 1.4 and 1.5 bios versions.  This isn't a big problem and appears to be just a bios bug of some sort, but I thought I would post my findings here in case someone else is getting poor performance under DOS.
BTW, does anyone know why these options default to disabled in the bios?

BTW, does anyone know why these options default to disabled in the bios?
It makes sense when windows and the drivers provide it .
But not e.g when installing an OS or doing dos based or windows preinstall enviroment imaging .
I have also thought it's strange they have it disabled at default .
Atleast they should be enabled with "load optimized defaults" .
Just something we have to be aware off i guess .
This is one of the bios entrys i always ajust when starting with a default bios load .
Nice tip about having both enabled , wasn't aware of that .
Just been having the habit of enabling both 1/2 and 3/4 each time even if ports are used or not .

  • K8N Neo2: Another problem with the BIOS 1.9

I flashed my K8N Neo2 with the BIOS 1.9, I lost the MAC address of the NVIDIA NIC. I fixed the problem reflashing the BIOS with the /nvmac:XXXXXXXXXXXX /wb options. Loaded the default settings and set the boot priority, the new BIOS is unable to boot from my Adaptec 19160 SCSI controller: it try always to boot to the NVIDIA NIC. It seems that the NVIDIA NIC has a higher boot priority than other external boot devices and it's impossible to change it.
    The settings are:
    First boot divice: Floppy
    Secind boot device: Hard-Disk
    Third boot device: CD-Rom
    Hard disk boot priority:
    1. Adaptec SCSI
    2. NV RAID
    3. Other boot device
I reflashed the BIOS with the old 1.8 and now the system works well ...
    Thank you for the attention

  • I have constant K8N Neo2 problems advice needed. (long) Update

I need some advice on what my problem might be and if I need to RMA the motherboard or power supply.
I have a new Athlon 64 3500+ processor, MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum BIOS v1.3 motherboard, with 2 512MB DIMMs of Corsair Value Select Memory. I have had and am still having a series of crashes and lock-ups I will list below. FULL SYSTEM SPECS BELOW AT BOTTOM.
I initially installed the motherboard with a SINGLE 120GB hard drive from the old machine and the installed the memory in memory slots 1 & 2 to try dual channel memory mode. I then formatted the C partition and did a clean install of Windows XP Professional with SP2, installed the MSI drivers on the installation CD that came with the motherboard (Nvidia nForce3 Version 5.03 System Drivers, Realtek gigabit ethernet driver, Realtek AC97 audio driver) & the GeForce v66.93 video driver. I then got my first blue screen "MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" crash, I ignored this crash and rebooted. I shortly got a black screen crash which I also ignored.
I then installed a new 200GB hard drive and a old 120GB so I could transfer the data from the old 120GB to the new 200GB drive. The data transfer went fine. As I was preparing to install some applications I then got my second blue screen "MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" crash. Suspecting the Corsair Value Select Memory could not handle dual channel I ran Memtest-86 for 2 passes and got NO errors with the memory in dual channel mode, so I left it.
With my data backed up on the 200GB new drive I removed the new 200GB and the second 120GB hard did another clean install of Windows XP Professional with SP2, this time with Nvidia’s nForce3 Version 5.10 system drivers, the Realtek gigabit ethernet driver and Realtek AC97 audio driver  from the motherboard installation CD & the GeForce v66.93 video driver. I downloaded the latest version of Core Center and installed it and got it working. CPU temperatures were showing a low of around 29C, average of about 44C, and spikes at full loads of about 55-57C. I then ran Ghost to back up the boot partition. I installed all my applications, reinstalled the 200GB and 120 GB hard drives moved some data around with no crashes.
I then installed Rome Total War and played for about 2 hours and had one black screen crash after the reboot played for 4 more hours with no problems so I shut down and went to bed.
In the morning I got up started the computer let it run for awhile the CPU temperatures were in the low 30Cs to low 40Cs I tried to copy some files from the D partition to desktop and the screen freezes I waited about 5 min. with no change and no drive light activity so I hit the reset button. Upon reboot I got a ‘no system disk found” error, I went into the BIOS and checked the drive set-ups and boot priority, everything was correct. I tried for a half hour to get the system to boot with on luck. I used the Ghost to restore the partition image I had made earlier and still no boot. I finally decided to reinstall XP again put in the installation CD and when I got to the screen where you decide where to install Windows I changed my mind quit and bingo the machine boots into the restored Ghost partition???? I started to reinstall my applications got one more blue screen"MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" crash and another screen freeze that I had to reset.
So I decided to start from real scratch I removed the new 200GB and the second 120GB hard drive ran Killdisk on the boot drive, made a new clean 20GB C partition and did another clean install of Windows XP Professional with SP2, this time with Nvidia’s nForce3 Version 5.10 system drivers, the Realtek gigabit ethernet driver and Realtek AC97 audio driver from the motherboard installation CD & the GeForce v66.93 video driver. I installed the latest version of Core Center and installed it and got it working. CPU temps were as before.
I tested the memory with Memtest-86 again 2 passes no errors. Just in case I then moved one of the memory DIMMs to memory slot 3 out of dual channel mode and to a slower speed and ran Memtest-86 for about 20 hours with 21 passes with no memory errors, so I think memory can be ruled out as the problem.
Next I installed my applications I got one screen freeze that I had to reset. I reinstalled the other 200GB and 120GB hard drives. After I got all my applications install and Ghosted the boot partition. I have had one more one screen freeze that I had to reset.
I have a problem I simply cannot figure out. The memory is obliviously fine. While I have seen CPU temperatures spikes as high as 57C the CPU temps as reported by Core Center averages in the high 30Cs or low 40Cs and most of crashes/lock-ups don’t seem to occur during high CPU load/temp. The power supply might be a little light for the system but many of the crashes have occurred with only one hard drive in the system. The fact after one for the lock-ups the system would not boot for awhile and then magically just booted gives me concern there might be a motherboard problem.
Any solution ideas would be appreciated. Should I RMA the power supply, the motherboard, or both.

Your PS unit is a little weak for that much hardware, but I doubt thats your problem as well
re your PSU, given youv'e got a less hungry Graphic Card, thought it was at worse marginal, have seen worse.

  • FYI: To those getting no video at all during POST on K8N Neo2 Plat

I've been racking my brain all day/night fighting my new K8N Neo2 Platinum system. I first put together a minimal system with just memory, CPU/cooler, and AGP card and powered it up to make sure it would work. Sure enough I saw the Platinum POST screen and I went into the BIOS.
I figure all is good so I turn off the system and install the rest of the components.Like so many others I powered back up to the disheartening screen of nothingness. The D-Bracket showed all 4 LEDs green so I was baffled as to the problem. I tried various forms of restart with the same result. With a sigh I began reverting my system back to the original bare bones set up. Same result...black screen. I tried various CMOS resets after reading everything I could find. New result: black screen but POST would always get stuck with D-Bracket indicating "Initializing Floppy Drive Controller".
After trying various memory configurations, various CMOS resets, various AGP graphics cards, and many other things for several hours to no avail I finally got out an ancient PCI graphics card and was finally able to get video and enter the BIOS. I selected Load Fail-Safe Defaults and made sure to select AGP for the Primary Graphic's Adapter setting. I swapped the PCI card out and the AGP card back in. Still no video on the AGP card. I put the PCI card and AGP card in together and rebooted again. PCI card has video, AGP card does not.
I still don't have my problems solved but I at least wanted to let people who are getting no video on their AGP graphics card know that they may be able to get video on a PCI graphics card. As a side effect, for whatever reason, it appears that I get fully through the POST again and the D-Bracket lights up all the LEDs.
Hope this helps someone out there who is frustrated like I am and maybe someone can figure out what's wrong with the AGP graphics.
The BIOS version is currently W7025NMS V1.3 092404 15:57:09...I'm going to work on updating that next and see if that fixed anything.
Here's my system if it would work:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 90nm
    Gigabyte 3D Cooler-ULTRA GT
    OCZ 520W PowerStream
    OCZ 512MB DDR400 PC3200 EL Platinum Rev. 2 (4 sticks)
    BFG nVideo GeForce 6800 Ultra
I made the following substitutions to test:
OCZ DDR400 PC3200 EL Platinum Rev. 2 (1 stick in various slots, 2 sticks in various slots in single and dual channel mode)
    Corsair 512MB Value Select DDR400 PC3200 (1 stick in DIMM 1 slot)
Radeon 9700 Pro (old AGP card -- didn't work any better than BFG card)
Some old PCI card -- not even sure what it is (allowed me to see what was going on!)

Nope. Cable is definately not on upside down! =)
I get the same behavior on both floppy drives I've tried. The light only comes on when it tries to access it and it reacts as though I've put in a bad floppy. Thing is the floppy works on several computers and works on one of the floppy drives I used with this system, only while it was connected to another machine.
I was able to update the bios to v1.4 without using a floppy by making a bootable CD and flashing from there. Still no go. I think at this point I'm ready to concede that I do in fact have a motherboard that has gone south. I've tried every combination of option I can think of in the BIOS but the AGP and Floppy Controller both appear to be fubar.
Still, the one good thing that came out of all this is that I found out how to make bootable CDs. I'm sure to use that little trick over and over and that may make it so I don't really need these pesky floppy drives anymore at all! I'll make a post on this so we'll soon all be floppy free! =)

Do I need a new PSU?? or is there another problem?

AMD recommends a PSU with atleast 24a on the 12v rail. This does not mean your PSU won't hack it, it just means that as a rule of thumb, it's not supposed to.
Could your PSU be the cause of your problem? Possibly! You have a lot of components drawing power from your PSU. It would be wise to buy a beefier PSU with 12v/5v/3.3v amps all in the 32+ range (see my PSU in my signature or the enermax 460/465w whisper II)).
The problem with not having a better PSU to work with is you could encounter an error, deem it as a result of something it's not, and think the PSU is good and something is bad when it's really the other way around. Moral to the story: get a new PSU.
I tried searching microsoft's knowledge base for your error and nothing turned up that had anything to do with windows installation errors. Are you sure you copied the error down correctly?
If so, the only recommendation I have for you is this. Try installing windows with minimal components installed (CPU, motherboard, videocard, single cdrom, single hard drive). Leave your SB Live! out. Leave your WinTV out. Leave your linksys card out. Leave your DVD-R from LG out. And if you are willing to conserve even more power. If you really want to conserve power, you can install windows with only one stick of ram installed.
Next thing you want to do is check to make sure the memory is not faulty. Start by putting only one stick of memory in slot one and testing it using memtest86+ (i hope that link is correct). You're going to want to run a 1-4 hour standard loop of tests followed by a 12-24 hour loop of test 5. Then you will do the same thing with stick two in slot one. After this works, test to make sure there's nothing wrong with the motherboard by doing the exact same tests again one by one with the sticks in slot two this time around. After this is all done, do the tests again with both sticks in slots one and two. if it doesn't work like this, you could have faulty memory (but this should work). You can always run your memory in the same colored slots (single channel (slots one and three)) but this will cause you to take a hit in performance. Generally, for all instensive purposes, you should be able to run it in dual channel mode without any problems. I imagine you will be able to if the sticks are good.
If they don't work in dual channel mode, to be completely honest, I don't know what you would consider the problem then... could be the PSU... could be a badly matched pair... could be the motherboard. All this is determined by how you handled the parts when installing them. There are a lot of unknowns when trying to help a user without knowing anything about their install.
If all memtests' run successfully, you are now ready to install windows. If windows doesn't install correctly, you probably have a botched BIOS setting somewhere (like aggressive memory timings) or something similiar that's stopping you from successfully installing windows.

  • MSI K8n Neo2 platinum and drivers chipset, 5.03 or 5.10?

    Hello,
    J reinstalled my K8n neo2 with XP SP2, A64X2 4200+, XFX 7600GT ....
On MSI website there is 5.03 drivers for this motherboard. There is no 5.03 on nVidia website drivers archive?
On nVidia website there are 5.10 and 5.11 drivers. j look here that 5.11 is not very stable.
So, what is the best: 5.03 or 5.10?
Excuse j write not very good english!
    Thank.

The 5.10 works fine - 5.11 has cause network problems for most people.  There are better (V4.79) IDE/SATA/RAID drivers available if you want to do your own mix: DL the 6.37 Beta from here http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=971 and replace the IDE subfolder in the C:\NVIDIA folder from unpacking the 5.10 nVidia driver pack with the IDE folder from the 6.37 Beta, then run the Setup.Exe in the 5.10 subfolder.  6.37 Beta was nVidia's early attempt at a unified nForce3/4 driver pack but they gave up the unified idea without ever publishing one.  There may even be better "mixes" available but this works for me and I've been running a RAID-1 with them for 2 years now with no faults.
