K8N Neo3 won't boot

I have put together a barebones kit that will not boot.  Everything is new and I have double checked everything to make sure it's installed correctly.  When I power the machine up the fans on the motherboard, video card, and power supply all come on.  The cpu fan comes on sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.  It will start another time and stop after about 15 or 20 seconds.  I'm at my wits end over this one.  I have built several boxes before and have never run into anything like this.  The PSU came with the case.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here is my setup:
Memory:  Corsair VS1GB4003C PC3200 1024MB 128Mx64 184DIMM

tcsenter, this has been discussed very often in this forum. 15A is NOT enough, period. If you want to insist on this, well be my guest. But don't come crying if your psu burns up half your system. You have been warned about that now.
It has been "discussed", but those discussions NEVER withstand any scrutiny when I enter them - period.  Everyone dives out the back door or threatens to have me banned.  Why?
Because I PROVE my argument using the very same "simple math" you cite.  Unless you are referring to some new fuzzy math that wasn't taught when I went to grade school?  I get my numbers from the manufacturer datasheets, which are absolute worst case scenarios that can't be found outside of AMD's R&D lab, or actual load measurements using reasonably precise methods:
K8N Neo3 core logic = 0.5A
AMD Athlon64 3200+ = 9A MAX
GeForce 7300GS = 1A MAX
Maxtor 120GB = 2A (spin-up)
Liteon 16x DVD RW = 2A (spin-up)
Cooling Fans x 2 = 0.5A
Total +12V load = 15A
This assumes 100% loading, which is impossible during POST and until the operating system begins loading.

  • Bios updated and now K8N Neo won't boot? FIXED!

Successfully restored from backup (after some hassles!), but thanks to everyone who helped.
Having messed with the bios some more, I *think* I now know what the problem was.  And *blush*, I think it was my fault all along *blush*.
I think I had one of the drives selected at the top in Hard Disk Boot sequence, instead of the SCSI - Raid Array.
That would mean it was only reading half the MBR at boot time which would kindof explain the problems I was having.
Still, we live and learn.  Thank God for backups!
    Cheers all
    Chippy
I hope someone can please help me?
I just upgraded my K8N Neo2 bios from 1.4b to Easybios 1.3c (or whatever its called).
I took all the proper precautions and the bios update itself has worked just fine. My system is "working" OK.
However, I can't boot. The system POSTs fine, detects the raid0 array just fine and then falls over with an MBR 1 error and an MBR 3 error.
I booted from the XP install CD and loaded up recovery console, and I can log on to the array. The array and all data is fine.
So it looks like its just the MBR record that is screwed. Is this because of some incompatibiliy between my old and new bios?
And anyway, please does anyone know how to fix it? I suppose I can try to rebuild the MBR somehow, but I don't know how. And I really DO NOT want to risk losing all of the data on the array. Yes, I have a full back up, but I don't want to end up having to rely on it!
Has anyone seen this problem before when doing a bios update? And any ideas how to fix it?
(I guess I could flash back to 1.4b, but I really would like a later bios version to go with my new - as yet untested - Opty 146).
    Thanks

Thanks for the tip, Doc.  But I have entered the bios settings from scratch.
I can try it again, but why do you think that might work?  There really aren't two many sata and raid settings to make - all you have to do is enable the two channels (sata3 and sata3) and then enable them also in the raid menu.  That's it.  And the board "sees" the raid array just fine, its just it won't boot anymore.  I can read and write to the array no problem from Windows Recovery Console, so I conclude that the hardware is all working properly.  I think its an MBR incompatibility issue between the two bios versions... or maybe MBR corruption.
I seem to remember some people having problems with this a year or so ago when upgrade this bios from 1.4 to 1.5.  Some people were having to do complete Windows reinstalls to fix it.  That was why I didn't update my bios sooner.
But I asked around this time and it seemed those problems had been resolved.
    Seems I was mistaken!
    Any other thoughts / suggestions?
    Thanks
    Chip

  • K8N Neo3 won't start

I've just installed a new MSI K8N Neo3 with an AMD Sempron 3100+, and at first everything seemed just fine.  The assembled computer started just fine, and I started installing Windows XP.  After having formatted the hard drive the installation suddenly stopped and the computer went dead.  And after that it hasn't started again.
I've tried to disconnect everything except the CPU and the power switch from the motherboard, and it still won't start when I connect the power cords and press the power switch.  I can see both the mother board fan and the CPU fan "jerking" for a second, but then everything is dead again.
When I disconnect the power cord that powers the CPU from JPW1 and try to power up, the fan on the motherboard starts, or at least the motherboard fan and the chassis fan start.  If I power down and reattach the cord to JPW1 and the power up again, I get the same "jerking" of the fans and then nothing.
Does anybody know what can be wrong?

  • Report: K8N Neo3-F Cool boot problem!!!!

    Hi all,
I've got Cool boot problem on my new K8N Neo3-F. The power is often turned off suddenly just after I turned on the power switch. All components are shutted down while the power led blink. It's unable to turn off completely by pushing power switch for awhile. I usualy have to disconect the power cord then clear cmos and cool boot again.
This problem seem to occur more oftenly when using SATA HDD. Should it be attituted to a bug bios?

Something along what you already have on +3.3v/+5v but 20A or more on +12v (single +12v PSU model) .
But when the time comes to replace PSU it's wise to get one that has enough power that will serve the next build or upgrade also .
Not leaving you again in the same situation you are now one more time down the line .
Note that HD's are notirious power eaters .They all may have nice numbers from the manufacturers for write/read consumption
but it's not many that specifies spinup consumption which always are altleast 2-3 times the amount of read/write power demands.
Tagan 2power/2force is nice and is applicable to both 20/24 pins systems and has the ability to run the +12v line as one combined or dual .
They also come in different sizes (max wattage) .

  • K8N Neo4 Won't boot using sata drive(s)

    Hey everyone,
I've got a pc that will only boot when the boot is written on a (P) ATA drive (the ones with the big cables).
The problem is, the old ATA drive went corrupt and we placed a SATA drive in it.
The ATA drive was left in the pc back then without any data on it (not sure why) with windows installed on the SATA disk.
Recently I discovered the ATA disk is not empty, it actually contains the pc's boot files (boot.ini, ntldr and the other thing, I forgot)
The ATA disk being partially corrupt and it being only a matter of time before it won't do anything at all I want those boot files on my Sata drive.
I tried a couple of things that should have worked but they didn't.
Then I decided to reinstall windows only having the sata disk attached.
Everything goes well until the setup has finished copying files to the harddrive and wants to reboot.
When it tries to boot to continue the installation from the hard disk I will once again get the well known 'boot disk error, please insert system disk' (or something like it).
I know the boot order is ok (certainly when its the only drive in the pc excluding the dvd drive).
The disk is being recognised in the BIOS correctly, even in the windows setup (no need to supply extra drivers)
The Operating system I'm trying to install is Windows XP Professional SP2
The sata disk is a 620 Gb Samsung disk, set with jumpers to sata 1 mode (Sata 150)
I don't think any other pc information is relevant (it works just fine), if any more info is needed ill add it.
I've got a ticket on the MSI online support, but I thought I'd ask it here as well
Maybe someone has any idea how to fix this.
I'm not 100% sure if the pc is running the latest BIOS but I think so, I can check tomorrow.

Not vital, but good to know: During boot-up, first BIOS screen, hit I think key F11 to make sure BIOS knows what to inform Windows. Also have a look in boot order, and only have the SATA disk therein.
More importantly: From the motherboard page it seems as if you have to use a floppy and load RAID drivers to get SATA disk work correctly. ...It has got a few years on it's back.
    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=177
Its worth a shot I suppose.
I remember when I first got it I had to use a driver on a floppy disk, however back then the newest disk you could get was Windows XP (SP-0 aka pre service packs)
The Windows XP SP-2 disk seems to recognise the drive, but i see no harm in finding a floppy drive and giving it a shot.
Or possibly trying a diffrent OS such as linux or vista / 7.
Ill give it a try one of these days and report back, for anyone else reading, suggestions are still welcome

  • K8N Neo2 won't boot

Motherboard, CPU, CD-ROM drives, floppy, HDD, graphics card installed, but when I push the power button nothing happens. No lights anywhere. No fans are spinning.
    What did I break?

The ISO you have is a compressed "image" file.  You need to burn a cd from the iso file.  I use Nero to burn cds. You can download an evaluation copy from:
    http://www.nero.com/us/Demo_Versions.html
Then boot with that CD in your cd drive. Windows will then install.
HOWEVER,  the 64 bit version of Windows XP is still beta and there are not a lot of drivers for it.  I would strongly suggest that you install Windows XP first and run it for a while to make sure your system is stable.  You can then install 64 bit Windows as a second OS (dual boot).  That way you will always have a good OS on your system if you have problems with Windows 64.
As for updating drivers,  I ususally install the latest MB drivers first, then Windows Update, then drivers for video card, etc., etc.,
    Good Luck.

  • Can't boot WinXPpro on K8N Neo3 gold

Setting up new mobo and cpu, keeping all old peripheral hardware, including hard drive with XP Pro.
Old board was ASUS A7S333 with SIS745 chipset, new board is K8N Neo3 gold (MS-7135 ATX) with nVIDIA nForce4-4X chipset and AMD K8 cpu.  The hard drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus8 40Gb with two partitions, one an old WinME and the other is WinXP pro.
The system posts, default selects the WinXP, and tries to boot the os but fails with a stop code of 7B "Inaccessible boot device".  The drive itself is fine, ran chkdsk diagnostics, even connected it as secondary drive on third machine and it comes up ok.
Reading other forum topics it appears that the change of chipsets from old mobo to new requires a driver change for the IDE controller.  One forum topic "Can't boot Win2K SP4 on K8N Neo2" indicates that the Recovery console helped to fix the problem by reverting back to a plain vanilla version of a Microsoft driver but there were no explicit instructions on how to do this.  I can get the Recovery console up from my XP installation CD but its not obvious what to do from there.
It took me a long time to get the WinXP system configured, patched, tweaked, apps installed, patched.....  so I'd hate to start all over.
Anybody know how to pull this off?
    thx

  • HELP, K8N won't boot into bios or anything. need to reset board to default

I got playing with the MB and tried HT 5x, it immediately shutoff and now won't let me into bios to reset it, so i'm waiting to hear from MSI. I tried clearing CMOS and everything, the damn thing boots on for 5 seconds and goes off. Screen stays black. Has to be turned on from PSU as power button at front won't do it.
    CPU: AMD64 3200+ (230FSBx11 = 2.5Ghz)
    MB: MSI K8N NEO
    MEM: OCZ 3700 Gold Dual Channel (2x256 in slots 1 & 2)
    VC: ATI 9800 Pro 450/380
    PSU: ANTEC True 550w
Its not heat related as I've been able to run lots of tests and my case is open right now.  It just won't boot at all, black screen and shuts itself off.  All I need to do is get into bios to change HT back to 4x, but I can't.  Any ideas to reset to default?

I tried having it unplugged for over 8hours while i was at work, tried taking the battery out, tried taking both memory out.  It starts up (screen stays off) and then shuts itself off after 5 seconds still.  I turn the power off, then back on at the PSU (the power button at the front won't turn it on or off) then it starts all over again.
My ABIT IC7 would reset to default it turned off and on 3 times in a row...why dosen't this board have something like that.  arg.  So anyone know how I can get this damn board to allow me into bios?

  • K8n won't boot off ATA drive

So with all this talk of unlocked SATA busses limiting o/c, and my frustration getting the bus over 240 with 5:6 (or even 2:3), or 225 with 1:1 I thought I'd give using an old ATA drive a shot.
But the board won't boot off it.
I've tried several installs of XP, formated clean for fat or ntfs, clean or quick, each time after windows copies over all the files and does it's first reboot, the board can't find the OS on the HD.
NTFS and FAT give slightly different error messages but the error is something like can't find operating system, or bad operating system.
Not your can't find ntldr or anything that would look software related.
I even moved the hd from the computer back to my main rig after one of these installs, and it went right into the install program where it shoulld have been.

you are not telling us what you were last doing before it went wrong, believe me that might give some clue, however
do you have the speakers connected to pc or not, if you do and if there is something wrong then you should hear series of beeps and by looking at the motherboard manual you might identify the prob, . you  also say you pressed the red button but you are suppose to hold it  for a while. try to hold it for at least ten second.
MSI does suggest unplug the pc, disconnect all power cables from PSU to the motherboard with no exception, then remove the memory, graphic card, and cpu, clear CMOs and hold it at least ten second (pref 20 sec). test those item on another pc if you can, reinstall, . if still prob, try the safe mode by pressing F8 then try VGA mode. you might have corrupted driver for the graphic card. five things can go wrong psu, cpu motherboard, memory, and HDD. by pressing f8 if safe mode appears then you have a reasonably good system the prob is window on HDD, try another HDD with a fresh window. keep cool and good luck

  • K8N Neo3 Issues (At the end of my rope)

The parts I have are as follows:
    1x K8N Neo3 MOBO
1x Sapphire x1600 Radeon Video Card 512MB PCIE
    1x AMD64 Sempron +3000 (Socket 754)
    1x WD 100GB HDD
    1x WD 250GB HDD
    2x DRAM Master PC3200 DDR400 Memory Modules
    1x DWL D-Link 11.0Mbps Wireless USB Adapter
    1x LiteOn 16X DVD Dual Drive (ATAPI/E-IDE)
    Some things to note:
All of the parts have been tested in other machines and work perfectly. I'm currently running XP Pro on a 15gig partition on the 100GB HDD. All of the drivers are installed on this partition as well as firefox. On the other partition on that drive, I have 3DMark05 and windows media player classic installed. Both partitioned were made after formatting the entire drive. On the 250GB HDD, I have some anime and various wallpapers. Hardware acceleration currently set to two notches left of full. All of the drivers are up to date, and I have flashed the BIOS.
    The problems:
First off, my CD driver could not read CDs all too well. In the middle of installation I'd get tons of errors which was odd considering the fact that the CD (XP Pro) worked in other comps. After I flashed the BIOS however, this problem was removed, or rather, it pops up less frequently.
Another issue I'm having is with the memory. Both memory modules work well, and were memtested with no errors, however, unless I go to Advanced Chipset Features in the BIOS and enter into DRAM Configuration and change the timing mode to manual, set the Memclock Index Value to 250MHZ and the CAS# Latency to 3, I can't boot into XP. Instead, it'll clear POST, and then pretend like it's going to take me to XP, and then reboot. On the issue with memory, it's interesting to note that with my old sempron processor (AMD 3200+), I don't have to change any BIOS settings to get the RAM to work.
The next problem on the list is with my video card. As mentioned previously, it's a Sapphire x1600 Radeon 512MB PCIE and I can't get it to work on this system for the life of me. I tested the card in a friend's computer (uninstalled his drivers and installed mine before attempting) and it worked like a dream. In mine however, whenever I go to run a graphic intensive program such as 3DMark05, it locks up after about 10 seconds, some times sooner. Occaisonaly VPU will kick in, but usually I have to perform a reboot. Even the little car animation in catalyst control center locks up my computer. It's interesting to note however that when watching anime, that I can usually go about 2 or 3 episodes before my computer freezes up on me, or just reboots.
It's interesting to note that my computer has not rebooted on me while surfing the net, or typing stuff up.
Another issue is that it seems like I can't go 10 or 15 minutes without something shutting down, such as firefox, or msn messenger due to errors. I've reinstalled windows and formatted twice now, and I'm still continually getting conflicts. I'm not sure if this issue might be tied into the ones I'm having with the motherboard, or if that even makes sense, but considering the fact I wasn't having these issues till I switched to this one, I'm ready to put the blame on it.
    My theories:
My current theory is that there is a device driver conflict somewhere. After much searching, reinstalling, and a lot of crying, I've not been able to figure out what the video card is conflicting with. While this issue might be better dealt with on some ATI fourm, ATI has not such fourm I could find, and since I'm having issues with the board overall, I figured I'd post it here.
I have no theory as to why one processor would have me to change bios setting to get the RAM to work, and why another wouldn't.
I have no theory as to why I can watch anime, but not play games.
    What I'm hoping for:
I'm open to any possible solutions to the problems I'm currently experiencing, and would even be grateful for possible causes if no solution can be met. If all else fails, and I can't get anything to work, (even though all the other parts work on other boards), I'll assume the board is faulty and just RMA it considering the fact that the people I bought it from don't accept returns.

I plan to get a 450W PSU today and see if that helps, I have my fingers crossed though. Last time I though my computer had a power issue, it turned out the problem was somthing else and I forkedout some cash for nothing.
Yep, that happens ... that is why I always recommend to try it out with a borrowed PSU first. Still, I have the feeling that things are moving in the right direction Maybe it is time to take a closer look at the videocard - you have any idea of the temperature of the card under stress - or about the temperatures in the computer in general? CPU temp, case temp, etc?

  • Won't boot at all... [will not POST]

Greets. My order from newegg just came in today and i'm quite happy with the "big" things i got-
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (link)
    MSI K8N Neo4-F (link)
Now, I'm not totally oblivious with the whole computer situation, after all, I was brave enough to build this, right? 8) The problem I am having lies in the fact that the computer just won't boot at all. Eventually I turned on that D-Bracket into JDB1. So far it has got Yellow and Red LEDs which stay on. The book tells me that the processor is installed incorrectly. I'm pretty sure it's lying as I have checked it many times (please don't make me take off that heatsink/fan again) and the chip is FIRMLY set in it's place. Alas, the screen stays black (running off of a sapphire card) and nothing happens. I would expect to AT LEAST get a BIOS screen to see where I messed up my SATA configuration (as I'm sure I did...)
But, if anyone has seen a problem like this or knows a solution, please give me a shout. It is very much appreciated
edit: after lurking more (link) I have decided that i'm not at fault, it is, indeed, the graphics card and/or monitor that are not working. I get:
which, according to this post, means that I should be in the clear for BIOS set up. Nothing is displayed on my screen! :( Help!
    Thanks.

    1) Do u have any usb cables from your case front panel or Flash card/drive or usb hubs connected to the mobo if so unplug them.
    2) Switch off computer & unplug mains lead the remove a module of memory leaving the remaining 1 in slot1 (nearest CPU)
if 1 doesn't apply or doesn't give any change try 2.
1 does not apply, the only external devices i have attached are a monitor, keyboard, mouse (all os/2, not usb) and of course our friendly D-Bracket.
I have unplugged all IDE devices and SATA devices. All that's in there is the 1 GB of RAM (it's a 1gb stick, not 512mb), graphics card and processor, still no picture :(
