K8N Neo3 won't start

I've just installed a new MSI K8N Neo3 with an AMD Sempron 3100+, and at first everything seemed just fine.  The assembled computer started just fine, and I started installing Windows XP.  After having formatted the hard drive the installation suddenly stopped and the computer went dead.  And after that it hasn't started again.
I've tried to disconnect everything except the CPU and the power switch from the motherboard, and it still won't start when I connect the power cords and press the power switch.  I can see both the mother board fan and the CPU fan "jerking" for a second, but then everything is dead again.
When I disconnect the power cord that powers the CPU from JPW1 and try to power up, the fan on the motherboard starts, or at least the motherboard fan and the chassis fan start.  If I power down and reattach the cord to JPW1 and the power up again, I get the same "jerking" of the fans and then nothing.
Does anybody know what can be wrong?

  • K8N Neo3 won't boot

I have put together a barebones kit that will not boot.  Everything is new and I have double checked everything to make sure it's installed correctly.  When I power the machine up the fans on the motherboard, video card, and power supply all come on.  The cpu fan comes on sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.  It will start another time and stop after about 15 or 20 seconds.  I'm at my wits end over this one.  I have built several boxes before and have never run into anything like this.  The PSU came with the case.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

tcsenter, this has been discussed very often in this forum. 15A is NOT enough, period. If you want to insist on this, well be my guest. But don't come crying if your psu burns up half your system. You have been warned about that now.
It has been "discussed", but those discussions NEVER withstand any scrutiny when I enter them - period.  Everyone dives out the back door or threatens to have me banned.  Why?
Because I PROVE my argument using the very same "simple math" you cite.  Unless you are referring to some new fuzzy math that wasn't taught when I went to grade school?  I get my numbers from the manufacturer datasheets, which are absolute worst case scenarios that can't be found outside of AMD's R&D lab, or actual load measurements using reasonably precise methods:
    K8N Neo3 core logic = 0.5A
    AMD Athlon64 3200+ = 9A MAX
    GeForce 7300GS = 1A MAX
    Maxtor 120GB = 2A (spin-up)
    Liteon 16x DVD RW = 2A (spin-up)
    Cooling Fans x 2 = 0.5A
    Total +12V load = 15A
This assumes 100% loading, which is impossible during POST and until the operating system begins loading.

  • Can't boot WinXPpro on K8N Neo3 gold

Setting up new mobo and cpu, keeping all old peripheral hardware, including hard drive with XP Pro.
Old board was ASUS A7S333 with SIS745 chipset, new board is K8N Neo3 gold (MS-7135 ATX) with nVIDIA nForce4-4X chipset and AMD K8 cpu.  The hard drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus8 40Gb with two partitions, one an old WinME and the other is WinXP pro.
The system posts, default selects the WinXP, and tries to boot the os but fails with a stop code of 7B "Inaccessible boot device".  The drive itself is fine, ran chkdsk diagnostics, even connected it as secondary drive on third machine and it comes up ok.
Reading other forum topics it appears that the change of chipsets from old mobo to new requires a driver change for the IDE controller.  One forum topic "Can't boot Win2K SP4 on K8N Neo2" indicates that the Recovery console helped to fix the problem by reverting back to a plain vanilla version of a Microsoft driver but there were no explicit instructions on how to do this.  I can get the Recovery console up from my XP installation CD but its not obvious what to do from there.
It took me a long time to get the WinXP system configured, patched, tweaked, apps installed, patched.....  so I'd hate to start all over.
Anybody know how to pull this off?
    thx

The memory and CPU info comes up at boot and no problem there??

  • MSI K8N NEO3-F Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX

I must not have stated my problem clearly. When I built my computer I turned on the power from the back, and the case lit up. (power switch on PSU) I was excited because this was my first build. When the bios popped up, it did not detect my hard drive. I then shut down the computer. I resat the ATA cables heading to my hard drive. When I went to turn the computer back on, the PC wouldn't start. I tried resitting everything on my Computer. I tried using only one RAM, resat video card, CPU, and even tried resetting the cmos.
Eventually I found that if I pull the lithium battery from my motherboard, my computer will turn on. The computer will run without the battery, or if I resit the battery. The battery on a motherboard only deals with the bios and the time and such. It doesn't make any sense at all. I am going to test my powersupply tomarrow and then my video card on a laiter date. I have tried replacing the battery. Getting around this problem wass not hard, I have installed games that look phenomal. I was succesfully able to install my OS also. Resetting the bios on every load up is not fun.
My other recent problem has been with the video card though(this is why im going to test with another VC). When I resit the battery after shut down, and turn my PC back on, the Video Card over powers it self. For three minutes the monitor wont recognize my card and my card pushes as if it was running DOOM3. Finally it steadies out and the monitor turnes on. Please help me out if you have any good info for me. I'll try anything at this point. I'm not computer illeterate.
I am an Intern with TWC's IT departement. I am also going to school for computer science. The A++ side of computing I had never learned.
.......Every where I go with this problem, no one seems to know the answer. No one will even throw ideas at me. Someone please help me out
    Heres my PC:
    ASPIRE ATX-AS520W
    MSI K8N NEO3-F Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX
    AMD Athlon64 3200+
    Sapphire Radeon X800Pro
    Samsung Spinpoint 160GB
    2*512 MB Crucial Memory

MaYBE I'm not really understanding the problem here...Are you trying to use the switch on the PSU to begin the boot process?  If so, hopefully, you should continue to have trouble doing that, it's not supposeed to work that way.  If the computer starts with the power switch on the PSU there might be a problem with the CMOS jumper, jbat1, being in the wrong position...continue to post your changes and progress and someone will continue to help you, there's a lot of good heads around here, but there's a lot of guys with problems too...add as much of your configuration info to your signature as you can find out, that will help us help you as well...

  • K8N Neo3 ps/2 problem

    Hello
I have a brand new K8N Neo3 with the following setup:
    A64 3400
    2Gb DDR400
    MSI 7900GTO
    SB Audigy LS
    Tekram DC395U
    Tekram U3W (boot device)
When I use my good old keytronic keyboard on PS/2 connector, it work for some times then I get keyboard errors mostly for all boot.
I have updated the bios to V1.7, disable/enable USB keyboard support, reset bios, not solution: work for some boot then dies.
The keyboard is working ok on another setup, other PS/2 keyboard get the same issue.
When I use USB keyboard, no problem.
When I use the keyboard on USB/PS2 adapter, it works.
Funny thing is when I plug usb and ps2, it boots, but the ps2 keyboard could be either running fine or not, blinking at every key entry.
I couldn't find USB keyboard with the same quality as the keytronic, and the USB to PS2 adapter is not a solution since it is unusable for fast typing and games (key repeat issues).

First check that the ground tab on the case IO Shield is making good contact with the mbrd PS/2 socket housing.  Sometimes older keyboards will just not work well with newer systems but if the keyboard is newish, you have a valid complaint for an RMA.  Having said that I've had problems with a Neo4-F's PS/2 mouse port - suddenly started just freezing the mouse after an hour or so of use; switched to a different mouse and same thing.  I can't help thinking there's something flakey about the PS/2 controller which MSI uses, since it's an issue which keeps coming up here.

  • K8N NEO3 - freezes during startup if a USB is attached

Just got a K8N NEO3 and installed it with a Sempron 3000+. Everything works fine untill I add a USB wireless network and restart the machine.
When the USB is plugged in, the machine freezes up right after it has displayed that its a Sempron 3000+ that is installed - so before showing both RAM and the different Harddrives.
At the same time the harddrive lamp lights constantly.
If I remove the USB wireless network - its fine.
I then tried with a USB flashstick - same problem. I have now tried with 3 different USB devices - incl. a keyboard.
I have tried all the USB sockets - same problem.
If I start the machine without an USB device attached, I can attach the USB device afterwards and it will work perfectly. Right until I shut down the machine. Then it hangs again.
I have ensured that I have the latest BIOS update - v. 1.0 from 1-7-2005.
    Any ideas ???

For the people talking about the front USB problem this has been well documented in these forums and isn't limited to just Antec. Here is what I've posted on the subject in the USB threads:
    Quote from: Frankeputer
Check to see if there is a wire running from your Front USB ports to the #10 slot of your USB block which connects to the motherboard header.
USB connector block layout which corresponds to the pin layout on boards with the Intel spec for USB. Do not cut the pin on the MOBO. You are removing/cutting the wire to the connector block from the case.
    2 4 6 8 10(this wire, #10, not needed)
    1 3 5 7 9(filled/key)
If you find a wire leading to the #10 spot on the block, remove that wire. My block has tabs so that you can pull the wire out, or you could snip/cut the wire leading to that position--if you cut the wire, be careful to cut the correct one and cut it in such a way that it may be repaired if you make a mistake.  Make sure you wrap the wire, the exposed end/s, you remove/cut with electrical tape so as not to accidentally cause a short. I actually folded the wire back and wrapped it.
2 posts to read--Here and Here.
This seems to be a common issue involving many different case manufacturers. I don't know how it applies to other MOBO manufacturers, but in these forums it is not limited to a specific MSI model or supported chipset(Intel or AMD).

look in your mainboard manual. it can be jumper and not a button. the newest neo3 got jumper instead red button.(usually button/jumper is located near to the battery)

    Not really a good thing
It shouldn't matter whether or not your power LED is hooked up. But if your case doesn't include that and it is somewhat old and you are using an older powersupply this could be the issue. Please post complete system specs including the max amps for the 3.3v 5v and 12v rails. This info can be found on a sticker on the side of the PSU.

  • K8N neo3 hangs and restarts

Hi, i have a problem with the k8n neo3 mainboard, it restarts and hangs randomly. These problems occur randomly with no visible pattern.
The pc is composed of a Sempron (palermo) 3000+, two pci cards (sound and network), a pair of Samsung ddr 400 memory, a radeon 9500 AGP card plugged into the AGR slot, and an outdated 300w atx1 power supply.
There is another problem too, some usb devices from the external ports when plugged at start don't work until they are re-plugged when the OS has been fully loaded.
What can be the cause of these problems?
I think that it can be some incompatibility with the agr slot or the power supply is not cappable to supply enough power.
    Thanks

Quote from: fokker on 08-April-06, 05:57:44
The ram are OK, used it in a k7n2 for month without a single hang.
Just to be sure, run your system with just one stick at a time (try both sticks of course) and see if it still hangs.  If it doesn't hang with just one stick, then it's a memory issue or your mobo doesn't like those RAMs in pairs for some reason.
If either stick alone still hangs like before, try swapping in RAM from another computer.  And if using another computer's known-to-work RAM still hangs, then it's pretty conclusive that it's not a memory issue.
Costs you nothing to find out, so I'd check and make sure before exploring other options (like replacing the PSU).
    Good luck.

  • K8N Neo3 Chipset NF4 - 4x X ATI 9800 PRO

Hi people, I am new for here, in the truth he is my first post, and already I arrive asking for aid.
    I mounted the following PC:
    Athlon 64 2800
    ATI 9800PRO
    Corsair TWINX512-3200LLPT 512MB DDR400 Ultra Low Latency
    HD 80 Gigas (HD é o mesmo)
    MSI K8N Neo3 Chipset nForce 4 - 4x
    Fonte real de 450 Wats
    Adigy2 ZS
I begin it was super contented with the configuration, but later that I mounted, I saw that I do not obtain to qualify the AGP 8X, therefore this plate has one slot AGR (Advance Graphics Riser) for compatible AGP VGA and amongst these vga
and amongst these vga, is not contemplated the 9800 PRO, with this I am twirling with the bus of the AGP in off and losing a lot of performance
Already I tried to download the updates of the BIOS, but still it does not have, therefore it seems that the plate is new.
Somebody that has this Mobo or that already it has seen this, can help me?
    TKS...

Sorry, but you'll have to get a new graphics card.
According to MSI's website ("The AGR slot is a special design that only supports compatible AGP VGA cards. For more detailed information on compatible AGP VGA cards, please refer...." http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/agr/7135agr.pdf), the Radeon 9800 series is not supported by the Advanced Graphics Riser on your motherboard. The 9700 series is supported.
A BIOS change won't do you any good.

  • K8n neo3 lan issue - not working

this spiffy new motherboard has been working very well for me, except for the lan - it doesn't do anything.
i upgraded to a k8n neo3 + sempron 2800+, from a k7 1700+.  i'm using the same case and power supply, and my watt-meter shows the new setup uses 20 watts less power, so i know it's not a psu issue.  i'm running w2k with sp4 slipstreamed in.
anyway, whether i use the msi-supplied network drivers or ones fresh from nvidia.com, i can't get an address supplied to me via dhcp from my router, and if i statically assign an address (10.0.0.3) the same way i did with the previous k7 setup, i can ping myself (10.0.0.3) but can't ping the router or modem (10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.1 respectively).
i've tried swapping cables (even though the setup worked fine with my old cpu/motherboard 2 days ago), forcing the network adapter into different speed modes (full auto, 100 full-duplex, 10 full-duplex), but i can't contact anything via this lan port.  when i do "ipconfig /renew" i can see flashing lights on the router indicating some traffic, however nothing happens on my win2k system.
i'm not sure what else i can do.  any ideas?  just to restate, the router/k7/win2k system worked perfectly 2 days ago.  i put the k8/neo3 system in, did a fresh win2k install, put on the 71.89 drivers for the geforce 6200, then proceeded directly to trying to get the network up and failing miserably.  no other software is installed, nothing else has been configured, and no system has ever put up this much of a fight before to stay off a network.
i'd really hate to have to go back to the k7 over this, the new box overclocks excellently from 1600 mhz stock to 2350 prime95-stable and the 6200 unlocks to a full 8-pipelines with 532/685 speeds - it's at least 5 times smoother at gaming than the k7 with a gf4mx, but without net access it's useless to me.  thanks for any ideas.

Before you jump to conclusions and make judgements, perhaps you might consider that there may be a configuration issue, perhaps just a faulty board. It doesn't mean they are all like that just because it doesn't work for you.
I don't mean to be rude, but I suggest you get all your facts before jumping to conclusions or making threats about posting negative remarks else where. You only serve to alienate those that may want to help.
What is the IP range settings in the DHCP of the router currently? (Try leaving at defaults, reset the router if you have to)
What, if any changes did you make in the TCP/IP settings of the onboard LAN adapter? (you shouldn't have to make any)
    Obtain an IP Address Automatically
    Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically
Make sure there are no gateway addresses, you can put that in later if you like.
And then what do you have selected: Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections>Lan Settings? (Should be nothing selected)
Also, Control Panel>Add Remove Programs>Add Remove Windows Components>Networking Services> Make sure all are unselected, primarily the Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client. Sorry, that's for XP
    Restart the computer if necessary.
Get to a command prompt, type "cmd" from the "Run..." on your Start menu
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    Good luck...

  • K8N Neo3-F RAM issues

Hi, I'm new at this forums and I already read the section about "find answers quick" (well... something alike that), but in the memory that works/doesn't work, everyone talks about the K8N Neo4 Platinum.

    I'm using Kingston Value Ram CL3 (3-3-3), 2x512 MB.
Has anyone tried this RAM before? Eny problems in tha past I should know about? Would it help if I put the RAM clock to 166MHz instead of 200Mhz that is the default?
    Any help welcome...

It would help to know your system specs including P/S, OS and exactly what problems you are having.
I can give you a tip to start with.
Adjsut your memory voltage to 2.6 or 2.65 and manually set your memory timings to 2.5-5-5-7-2T
Mobo: the one I said: MSI K8N NEO3-F
    Proc: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
    RAM: 2 x Kingston Value RAM KVR400X64C3A/512
OS: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
Currently the BIOS detects my memory as 3-3-3-8, wouldn't be bad if I change the first 3 for a 2.5?
Most of the problems I have are while playing 3D games (World of Warcraft / Warcraft III), it is as simple like the PC crashes: the Screen Freezes, and if I'm listening to music, it starts to sound like a really bad DJ...
My PC in not overclocked, however, I tried running a program called prime95, that basically tests processor and memory of a PC to see if it is stable... well, it has 3 kinds of test: processor test, memory test, and combined.
      - When I run the Processor test, it gives no problem at all after several hours, it works fine.
      - When I run any of the other tests, it gives problems (errors) after a couple minutes... even SECONDS!
The problem with prime95 is that it works only to tell that your PC either has problems or not, but it doesn't tell you what they are.
Hope this information is usefull and you can help me.
    Ty for reading.
