K8n neo4-f best drivers/config and stuff to avoid-

What are the best drivers currently for a K8N neo4-f board
and what should one avoid?  Did some reading, need SOME COMMENTS PLEASE-
Is this what currently should be used with NEO4-F and WINXPsp2:
-NVIDIAnForce4SystemDrivers-CK804_MN30004_XP-2006-3-23.zip :
 -YES to nVidia SMBUS
-YES to nVidia Ethernet (However, I thought this board used domething else?!?)
-NO  to nVidia IDE  (causes major problems for some.  Use MS Drivers instead)
-Realtek_ALCXXX_I0003-2006-2-21.zip
That is it to install?  Anything else?
Also how turn these off-
-DO NOT USE Nvidia firewall
-DO NOT USE Active ARMOUR (causes large download coruption?!)
Also, BIOS V1.B 112805 is best right now?
Any other comments on this board?

Ok, I understand that the MSI K8N Neo4-F uses a:
Onboard Gigabit Marvell 88E1111 PHY (NOT nVIDIA)
So, what drivers should be used for this ethernet hardware?
Where does one find the latest drivers for this?
Also anyone suggest the best drivers and config for this
motherboard.  My understanding is NOT to just get the
latest as the nVIDIA IDE is problematic as well as the
firewall from nVIDIA, etc!

I have a K8N Neo4 Platinum (PCB 1.0) and it had an AMD 64 3200+ single core CPU.
Now I've upgraded to an AMD 64 3800+ X2 dual core but the BIOS and MS Vista are seeing only the one core.
The BIOS is at the latest version - 1.D.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum random lock-ups and BSOD

I built a new PC about 3 months ago and from day 1 it has always locked up / frozen at random intervals. Sometimes it also BSOD's with a Machine Check Exception. Seems to lock up / freeze more often when have multifple windows open eg. Multiple IE running but really is random. I have replaced the Mobo and Ram but keep having the same issues. Have tried a clean install but no luck either. Did a clean install on an old IDE HDD and seemed fine but it did not have all of the software that I run on the SATA drive. Thinking the SATA drive may be the issue? Please Help!!!
    System is as follows:
    MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum [Bios 1.D]
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ DC [AMD Drivers]
    2 x Kingston 1024Mb ram [Dual Channel]
Nvidia 6800 Ultra [Latest Drivers 91.31]
    Thermaltake Purepower 460W PSU +3.3V 30A, +5V 30A +12V 15A
Western Digital 200G SATA II HDD [SATA Port 5 i think]

    Seemed fine?
There isn't really be any difference between an IDE drive and a sata.
Except that the sata drive needs some drivers as your installing the os.
Check your ram timings in bios but likely it's your psu.
Which components are on which rail?
The ones that use the +12v are your cpu, cdrom, dvdrom and graphics card.
Try disconnecting both roms and see if it improves things?

  • K8N Neo4 Plat SLI Drivers

I've been running the MSI posted drivers for some quite time and they seem pretty good.  Recently I ran driver detective and it pointed me to the NVidiaNF4 686 driver set for updates.
I ran the update and all seems well so far.  Then I read a thread were it's claimed that the MSI drivers give better performance.
Can someone give me the scoop on all this please?

yes i can confirm. MSI drivers gives best performance for storage device connected.
install MSI Chipset drivers, then install latest 6.86 from Nvidia, but skip "Storage Drivers" untick from installation.
for your mobo didn't tested, but you can perform test, use ATOO or HDtach and make benches with MSI drivers, then install 6.86 and retest. compare results. if 6.86 hurt the performance like in any mobo which i have tested, roll back to MSI drivers, and reinstall 6.86 but skip update storage drivers installation.

Every software does read data from sm bus. That one is true. However each of them does calculation on its own and performs compensation.  Just for example; vcore calculation looks like this: $20*0.00488 + 0.69 which turns into 1.41.
Finally booth of them are right. The board has 3 sensors: CPU, Board, "something". NvMonitor shows CPU and "something" while corecenter shows CPU and Board.
NvMonitor can't be trusted, they produce northbridge and it is up to board manufacturer to select monitoring chips (winbond, lm,etc) on board. Therefore I would rather believe to the corecenter.
I suggest using Motherboard Monitor MBM and using my custom data for monitoring the temps:
    http://213.214.52.181/Motherboard Monitor MBM 5.3.7.0 for MSI Neo4 Data Only.rar
Also, I believe that "something" is a temperature of the northbridge, but compensation must be added. CoreCenter shall fix this isue, but then... why they didn't do that before... because "something" is not for northbridge as I thought... who knows... yeah whatever, who cares...

Here it is: MSI with a brand new official bios 1.2!!!!!!!
Long awaited by hundreds of customers with a new winnie and the K8N Neo4 Platinum.....
OK, i flashed the new bios, i hit the 220x9, i hit the 220x8 and then i wanted to hit my screen fullspeed with my fist cause that damn thing stays blank!!
That was the last chance for MSI...the waiting is over....I will get a DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D and all the sorrow is gone!! And my K8N Neo4 (which is definitly NOT hot stuff for the Enthusiast!) will be sold on ebay! Or maybe i will  it with a big hammer!!! ARGHHHH!!!!
    Peace, Hammer1024
It's just your CPU that is giving you problems. You won't get any higher with a DFI. Trust me...
This '220HTT POST' problem is just something that some winchester CPU's seem to suffer. This is NOT a Neo4 problem.
    How do I know this?
I had exactly the same issue with a 3200+ and a Neo4. Couldn't get it to post over HTT220 even tough I could get it stable in windows at much higher speeds using Clockgen.
Tried a different mainboard -> same thing!
Tried different 3200+  -> Problem solved!
Tried the new 3200+ on the Neo4 -> No problems.
So don't start blaiming your board and talking trash before you try another CPU!

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum with 90nm San Diego 4000+

    Hello everyone,
My first post here. Tomorrow I'm purchasing a K8N Neo4 Platinum MB (non SLI) and have requested the retail seller to get me a 90nm San Diego 4000+ instead of the older 130nm Clawhammer 4000+. Now, after reading through this forum it appears there may be a compatibility issue with the San Diego chip. Should I change to the Clawhammer or go ahead with the San Diego. I don't plan on OCing for a couple of months. What should I do?
    Thanks!

I just fired up my K8n Neo4/sli with a 4000 rev.e chip last night, Bios is showing 3.0 and working like it should. Have it hooked to a Enermax 535 watt and One Evga 6800gt pci-e with the second card still in the box, I want to give it a good update and test before I bring the second card online, Cpu running at 35c with the side of under a Thermalright xp 90C Heatsink fan blowing down, want to test it fan blowing up next. Good luck it's a nice chip.
JJWOLD, thanks for the update, good news for me. I picked up the board last night, the rest of the stuff should be here next week. I'm going to load it with WinXP 64, which I know has limited driver support but I have three other computers so I'll just take it very slow on additional hardware and software installations. I may even use the integrated sound for now. By the way, did your board come with the 1394 cable and bracket?
    Thanks!

  • Can anyone verify K8N Neo4-F is SATA I as K8N- SLI is SATA II

I read on the MSI info sheet the K8N Neo4-F is SATA 150 and the K8N- SLI is SATA 300. Does anyone know for sure.
Both use Nvraid so I thought they might be the same. It's not a really big deal but i'd be nice if the  K8N Neo4-F was SATAII.
Also are there any sata HD's that are known to be incompatible with these two Mobo's
Thanks in advance for your input

Be forewarned - I have a Neo4 Platinum and it will not work with Maxtor DiamondMax 10 205GB SATA-II.  It will only work when jumpered to SATA-I mode.  There are lots of people out there with nForce4 boards that haven't been able to get SATA-II running...

  • K8N Neo4 (MS-7125) USB, Mic, S/P Out, and LAN ports all non-functional

I'm hoping someone can give me a hand with this.  I'm not a novice when it comes to motherboards but this particular board is making me feel like it.
Ok, I've got a K8N-Neo4 MS-7125 model.  Athlon64 3700.  I have all the current drivers and ran the liveupdate to make sure.
The LAN port will light up, but the Device manager will not recognize it, nor will the LAN utility.
The board has 4 USB ports.  The top two are non-functional, the bottom two work.
The S\P OUT port has never worked, nor do I know how to engage it or find it on the device manager
The microphone....this one is fun.  Its like the microphone is stuck in a feedback loop.  Whatever comes through my speakers, is heard on the other end by other users.  I am not heard at all, although I can hear myself through my OWN speakers.  Even with the mic unplugged, people still can hear my speakers.  Imagine having your speakers plugged into the mic jack.  The only way to kill the feedback is to actually go into the sound manager and mute the whole mic system.
I can live without the LAN and USB ports, but it would be a HUGE help if someone can help me with the mic and S\P ports!!
    Thanks!!!

Ok, I'll do my best to remember everything
    Athlon64 3700 939socket
    XP Pro Service pack 2
    Rosewill case 400watts
    SonyDVDRW Drive (dual layer)
    Samsung DVD drive
    GEForce 7300 256DDR (PCI Express)
120GB Seagate 7200 RPM Harddrive  (IDE) Partioned two drives
    1x512DDR ram  PC3200 400mhz
As for the flavor of the NEO4 the only other numbers I know of, is on the board it says N1996 right below the processor.  Is that what you need?  Its a PCB V.3 board nvidia Nforce4.
    Speakers are standard cyber acoustic
    Logitech Mic/Headset combo
This particular case allows for hookups for headphones and mic in the front.  The case has jumpers in the back that allow you to gain access from the front (but you probably already know that).  I've always used the front MIC/Headset jack, and I have a splitter in the back for the headphones and that jumper.  In trying to resolve the issue, I tried every jack with the microphone (even the ones that I know are labeled as speakers).  I do get my own voice through MY speakers on the front jack AND the mobo jack.
Hopefully I got you enough info!
    Thanks in advance!!!

I'm not overclocking and DOT is disabled. Optimized parameters are loaded.
System is running but  my BIOS version does not support dual core. I have installed all NForce 6.66 drivers and VGA drivers, and all Windows updates. What is the best procedure to flash bios, Winflash or MSI floppy method? What version of BIOS should i try,  1.6 or 1.8?
    Thanks.

Hi, when you ask 10 people about the best method to flash BIOS, you will probably get 10 different answers
    Some observations:
    1. Flashing under Windows has become "normal procedure" for boards of most other manufacturers; (I will not use this method for my MSI boards, though, because of the negative opinion on it in this forum. If the comments are correct, then the only conclusion can be that MSI software engineers are at present not able to deliver a Window-based flashing program with which MSI-BIOSes can be flashed into MSI boards in a safe way. I'd rather not find out the exact reason for this  . I have used Windows-based flashing programs numerous times with boards from other manufacturers - Abit, Asus, Soltek, ECS, etc. without any problem).
    2. If the procedure as described by Syar really has significant advantages over "plain flashing", then it means that either the BIOSes are flaky, or the boards are instable. Such precautions have never been necessary and should not be necessary! I can only recommend - just to be on the safe side - that, while flashing, you dance around the computer, carrying two carrots, an onion and chanting "Flash! Flash! Flash!
    3. There is something to say for not flashing from a floppy. Floppies are the oldest part of nowadays computers and the medium is probably the least failsafe part ... Therefore I have reserved a small (100 MB) FAT32 partition on a HDD, BIOS files and most recent flashing program will be copied to that partition. I will start the PC with a W98SE bootflop, go to that partition and flash from there. I have used this method a great number of times over the years, I will never add any switch when running the program.
    Additional Info
    Regards
    Hans
    Hi hansh,
thanks for that. I'll boot with a Win98 bootCD (NTFS support included) and thinking about flashing with an Iomega USB pen drive (FAT32). Any comments here?
And, blazing storm, thanks again for your valuable reply.

  • MSI K8N-Neo4 and PCI-E x4

    Hi Folks,
I've got an MSI K8N-Neo4 (MS-7125) motherboard that I'm looking to add a RAID card to.  It's got a PCI-Express x4 slot on the board that I'd like to utilize.  However, I've seen some conflicting information regarding it's use.  In the manual on page 2-26 it states "PCI Express x4 Slot (Support PCI-E x2 device Only)".  However when I look at the webpage for the board at http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum& it makes no mention of this limitation.
The main reason why I'm wondering is because I'd like to add a HighPoint RocketRAID SATA raid controller to my system.  If the slot can handle x4 cards, then I'll purchase the 2310 model, which is an x4.  If it cannot, then I'll purchase the 2300, which is an x2 model.  I've seen some mentions of other people on the forums with K8N-Neo4 boards using the 2320 (an x4 card with 8 SATA ports instead of 4 on the 2310), but haven't seen what sort of bandwidth they're getting.  Are you actually able to get PCI-E x4 bandwidth out of this port?  Or will it downgrade it to PCI-E x2 or PCI-E x1 (the PCI-E spec says that when cards a plugged into a different size port they only need to be supported at x1)?  Or, and even better question, will it even work?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Those are not different then from what's on the motherboard
Want a real one? Look at this: >>Real one!<<
    That's real raid controller.....
What you mention is just the same as the onboard stuff.
As for the Linux raid stuff, I presume you mean the Linux Software raid, no those controllers aren't that good, but the High-points aren't that good either.
Heck, they don't even have their own CPU or memory.....the one I showed you has and is WAY faster
(PS. sample given is PCIx, won't fit your board, but that's a raid controller!)
Okay, that still doesn't answer my question about the PCI-E slot.  You make a decent point, but I was more using the Highpoints as an example and because they came up in several searches of the forum.  For the sake of getting a real answer, lets assume it is a real RAID card, such as the PROMISE SuperTrak EX8350 RTL, which according to the Serial ATA on Linux page is a real raid card and all that.  Will it work in the PCI-E x4 slot on the MSI K8N-Neo4 Platinum or not?
All I really want to know is if the slot can actually run a PCI-E x4 card or not.  The documentation contradicts itself.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra and 4 GB SDRAM DDR 400 Problem

I have the K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra and 4 1GB sticks of Corsair ValueSelect DDR 400 (PC 3200), model VS1GB400C3, filling all four slots. The BIOS recognizes about 2.88 GB of total memory. The MSI manual states:
    Quote
Due to the South Bridge resource deployment, the system density
will only be detected up to 3+GB (not full 4GB) when each
DIMM is installed with an 1GB memory module.
I'm not sure what this means. Does it mean that I'm "wasting" my SDRAM, that not all of it is used, or does it mean that all of it will be used and the BIOS just reports a smaller number?

    Hi.
You seems not familiar with X86....
As you should know, Windows XP and most OS are 32 bits. That mean that every memory pointer is 32 bits, thus allowing to address 4Gb of memory.
    BUT
In most OS, there is a difference between the kernel and the user. So, in most OS, the memory is divided in two 2Gb block (no matter how many Gb of Ram you really have!). The first one is for the OS, the 2nd for the user program.
So, If you have for example 3Gb of ram, in the best case, you have 1gb for system and 2Gb for user program.
To allow more Ram to fonction, PAE (Physical Address Extension) was made. Instead of 32, you got 36 bits for you pointers.
But as X86-32 CPUs can't handle more than 32 bits, a reserved area was made within 4Gb to allow Memory to be copied from the area the program want to read.
    Exemple:
You got a server with 8Gb of ram. In windows, you only see 3.5+512Mb PAE.
If a program need to address memory in the 7-7.5 Range for example, the chipset copy the data from the 7-7.5 range to the 3.5-4 range in order to allow the CPU to get access: that's VERY slow.
So, in short: You can't have and don't need 4Gb of ram on 32bits OS.
(And there's even more place occupied by every card (AGP, PCI, PCI-e)....)
That's why XP64 is so interresting for programmers who needs lots of ram (Database....). When used with a chipset who know how to deal with lots of ram (I don't know if NForce4 can do it but I doubt it), you can load in memory a 4Gb Database.
But In all case, the bios should say 3.5Gb, not 2 and so on. You must have a problem with one of your stick. My guess is that they are all double sided and that you should slow down the memory to 333MHz.
(Or better: Send back 2x1Gb stick and get 2x512 SINGLE SIDED stick, unless you REALLY NEED 1.5Gb for your system !)
