K8N Neo4-F (PCB 3.0); RAID drivers refuse to install = Me going crazy

Alright first off, this is my first post. :D Hello MSI forums!
I have put this issue on a couple sites so far, and no one has provided anything close to help, so I'm hoping people here will be more knowledgeable.
The steps I take:
1. I am doing a fresh and full install of Windows XP Media 2005. I have made a RAID0 out of two IDE (not SATA) drives. I have set it to boot.
2. Upon loading Windows Install, I press F6 at the appropriate time, and everything is smooth with loading the two (2) drivers needed.
3. Windows finished loading and get to the screen where you see the list of your drives. I take a look and everything is normal. It sees my RAID0, and it is the size it should be.
4. I select it, do a quick format of it. It does this and continues.
5. Now here is the problem; Immediately after step #4, like it should, it access the floppy to load everything it needs for XP. Except it wont load anything. It damned refuses to load anything at all. It doesnt even try to really access the floppy! Meaning the floppy itself doesn't give a read error, it simply gives me a screen telling me "cannot be read" when it didnt even try and read the floppy.
I hope Im explaining this well, some people think that perhaps the floppy is damages or something. I assure you it aint the floppy or the drive. I have used several different disks, I have tested each one to make sure they work and there are no errors whatsoever. The issue is literally Windows Install for whatever reason is refusing to take the files off the floppy, thus I have to 'skip' them all, yet remember, the initial two (2) drivers loaded perfectly fine without fuss in Step #2.  ???
I have been at this for two (2) days now. I have used the nVidia RAID drivers as well as the RAID drivers provided by MSI on their site for my motherboard. But I do noth think that makes a difference, because even if I had teh wrong drivers on the floppy, Windows wont load them to even find that out.
My Mobo is an nForce4 ... 7125-60.
Anyone have any idea? I DID get the drivers to load properly with an old Win XP Pro CD, but I want Media edition, and there seems to be no logical reason why the Media instal would simply refuse the files on the floppy while they were accessed without trouble just fine (in the same day same floppy) by XP Pro.  :(
Any help is appreciated!

The system stats are irrelevant. The mobo is in the subject. 7125-60 is the exact model.
Windows install (the whole XP line) only needs two files in the initial phase of install (after F6). This is simply so the installer itself can see the RAID. After that (directly after the format if you choose to format) and right before the install starts loading all the files it needs before the first restart, it will access teh floppy to get the rest of what it needs for XP itself to be able to see the RAID. That is what is not happening.
In Xp Pro (non Media Center Edition), the second access of the floppy after the format goes though perfectly fine. In Media Center Edition it tried to access teh floppy, then simply refuses to load the files off teh floppy.
Its pissing me off at this point. Right now my theory is that some sort of asinine protection Microsoft "protection" (possibly driver sig) is blocking the drivers from loading, and XP MCE is loading its own non-working retarded drivers.
Ive tried slipstreaming and it didnt work the first time. I dont have vmware to test it on and I dont want to screw up too many DVDs, and simply using XP Pro is not a solution, its a 'i give up' stage.
Hi,
A couple of thoughts:
1) When you load the initial driver floppy (F6), does it give you a choice of which drivers to load?  Typically, when I've had to do the F6 thing, there'd be multiple sets of drivers, and I'd get a menu and have to select the correct one.  If so, was there a menu item specifically for XP Media Edition (or whatever it's called)?
2) Are you by any chance using a USB floppy drive?  There's a reference here to an MS KB article (916916) about compatible USB floppies:
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.intel/msg/df7b2411c347566f
but, I searched the MS KB, and couldn't find that article.

If you can't get XP to install by using a floppy disk to load controller drivers, download NLite and integrate the drivers into a custon install CD.  That way you do not need a floppy disk.  If you decide to do that, use the driver package I attached to my first reply in this thread.

  • Raid drivers won't install with 1.8bios

I ran into an issue with the new 1.8 bios for the K8N Neo 2. Attempted to reinstall XP and the install would hang when adding one of the raid files from the floppy to the windows installation folder.(made several attempts with different floppies) Switched back to 1.6 bios and no problems. This is an old build. The K8N NEO4 powers up and is followed by a long beep. The lights on the back of the USB card (4 lights( indicate 3 greens and one red in the upper right corner. According to the instruction manual, this means that Initializing Floppy Drive Controller
This will initialize Floppy Drive and controller. This makes no sense.
I flashed the CMOS both using the red button and removing the motherboard battery to confirm the power supply was bad. In hindsight, I wish I had not.
I switched from a 500W power suppply that died to a 430W thermaltake power supply. I've disconnected a hard drive and a burner to see if power was an issue, it was not the cause.
I'm pulling my hair out here, please help!

"Is it possible the power supply took the CPU with it when it died?"
Yes it's possible that it did that. It's also possible that other components were killed also, that's why changing and trying different parts are required until you find everything that may have been damaged. We can only suggest what might be bad and you or someone else will need to do the actual work, there is no getting around that. We can give the serious advice, you need to do the serious labor.
"...don't want to take the Tuniq tower 120 off if another processor will not work"
Anybody that repairs PC's would need to swap parts to be 100% sure of what's wrong.
Pin #20 is where -5V would be if newer PSU's still had -5V. The only the reason you would need the -5V is if you had an older K8N MB that had Creative sound on it instead of Realtek.

Oh and at start up I still get the error 'no keyboard' but if I plug a ps2 in it's fine, then ones windows is up I unplug it and the usb key/mouse work fine. Any ideas on how to fix.

Do I really need more than 18a with my system? How much money (ballpark) in US dollars do you think a adequate PSU for my rig would cost???
I am really thinking of just takeing it back and getting it replaced with the same mobo and see if that works.

  • DDR 500 memory compatible with MSI K8N Neo4 Platninum?

    Hi Folks,
I have a MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum PCB version 1 (S939/Nvidia NForce 4 Ultra), running the latest BIOS version.  I wondered if DDR 500/PC4000 memory would work at DDR500 speeds?  I note that the MSI webpage for this mobo only mentions DDR400 and in the manual, the BIOS description under "Advanced Chipset Features" - "Memclock Index Value (MHz)" says the maximum speed is 200MHz.  However, when I go to this setting in my own BIOS, I can set it to 250MHz.  I assume that this should give me DDR500?  Would altering this "Memclock Index Value" above 200 MHz cause any other problems with FSB, CPU, HT, PCIe, PCI speeds etc. or is it completely independent?  Does anyone have any recommendations of what sticks would work best (I was thinking 2 * 1024 Mb of Corsair XMS or OCZ XTC).  Now that DDR2 is standard and DDR prices are creeping up, there doesn't seem to be much difference in price between DDR 400 and DDR 500 memory.  Evern if my mobo can't support it, is there any merit in buying DDR 500 memory and running it at DDR 400 or intermediate speeds?
    Cheers!

    The x2 4800 would run 10x250=2500mhz.
With ddr500 it's beautifull, since you can use the cas latencies which are suited for the memory.
I have to lower my timings a bit to run them at 500mhz.Not much though, but I don't know what the long term prospect is for my memory if I maintain that for long periods of time.
As for running games,I found lower cas timings make my games run smoother opposed to the slightly higher ddr clock with slower timings.
But as mentioned, set cpu vcore 1 step higher in bios, leave the memory at auto, set cpu fsb or HTT at 250mhz,and use the default multiplier of 10 or also leave on auto.'The memory runs in spec and you wont damage it,only the cpu's get another 100mhz and should be a little bit more spicey while temps shouldn't go much higher as it is now.
The sticks should fit physically and I ran mine once at 266mhz stable, and they are just pc3200@200mhz

  • "K8N Neo4" dual core? NOT Neo4-F or platinum or SLI

I have a K8N Neo4. <- period.  msi seems conveniently to have forgotten about this model, it doesn't show up on their site at all.  literally a week after I bought it, it looked like they repackaged it and put a "dual core ready" sticker on it.
just wondering if the F model was just a bios update, or if they're just pretending that a single core limited version of the neo4 never existed.
    thanks
P.S. I tried to search for the answer before I posted, but all I found was people talking about their F or Platinum series and the dual cores they have in them.

Quote from: arpheztwig on 23-December-07, 02:39:41
well, the box didn't say it was an -F, and the box didn't say it was dual core ready, is it still possible it's the black?
does anyone know for sure that it ISN'T dual core ready?  otherwise I'm going to assume that it is and buy a new processor, I'll let you know what happens.
"F" usually is not written. You must have this one---> K8N Neo4-F (PCB 1.0) in Black PCB, but if its somethink else from possibilities like K8N Neo4 Platinum (PCB 1.0) or K8N Neo4-FI (PCB 1.0) it doesn't matter, all boards support dual core CPU and shares same BIOS in same time.

  • Cannot boot from RAID 1 drive on K8N Neo4

I am trying to install Win2K on a mirrored RAID array my K8N Neo4 motherboard.  Here is all the hardware:
K8N Neo4(MS-7125).  The box says K8N Neo4 F, but the intro screen says "Platinum".  Bios version 1.9
Hard drives: Two Maxtor Ultra16 250GB 7200 IDE drives.  Both on IDE controller 1 as master and slave.
    AMD athlon 64 3500
I followed the directions in the manual for booting off a RAID array.
In CMOS, Enabled IDE RAID, IDE Primary Master RAID, and IDE Primary Slave RAID.
    In F10 raid setup:
Set up "Mirroring" RAID array using both drives.
Enabled "boot" option for the array.
Array list shows Array as healthy.
Set boot order to "hard drive" then CDROM.
I boot from win2k CD, press F6 to install RAID drivers.
After a bunch of other stuff has been loaded, I am prompted for the RAID drivers.  I load both exactly as shown in the manual.
However, I am not sure I have the correct drivers on my floppy.  The directions in the manual for creating the floppy are clearly incorrect as they would result in nothing on the floppy.  I coppied the contents of the "pataraid" directory to the floppy.  The win2k installer asked for "nvata.cat" so I took it from the "sata_ide" directory.
Next, the installer asks me which disk I want to install windows onto.  This seems strange as it should see the two disks as one drive.
I tell it to install on the forst drive.  It formats the first drive and transfers a bunch of stuff.  It then reboots and tries to boot off the hard drive (or RAID array in this case).  The computer is unable to boot off the hard drive.
    Has anyone seen this?
What should I really make the RAID driver floppy?

I think I know what you are referring to.  Nvidiia's documentation for nvRaidMan says that it reconstructs a mirrored array (once the bad drive has ben replaced) slowly over the period of a day.  I think this is actually a disadvantage.  The promise RAID controller allows you to immediately copy the good drive to the new drive.  It can take a while for big drives (like twenty minutes), but then you are fully protecetd again and you dont have this big task in the background all day long.  More importantly, the promise documentation makes it clear which drive is being copied to which.
I think I will start looking for a promise RAID controller and just make a mental note not to trust nvidia.

i don't have any SATA devices on my machine, but i still couldn't figure out why after i stoped using RAID and wanted to switch to a 2X160 GB non-RAID config, after BIOS post the screen would hang at detecting NV raid. took me 3 hours to find out that if the optimized settings were loaded, the trick would be to disable the aggresive memory timings from the cell menu. strangely enough, it worked with aggresive timings and the BIOS i had when i got the mobo (it didn't hang at detecting and configuring raid) but not with the new ones. and this was without any OC.
