K8n neo4-f v 3.0 which sata ports to use

Hi guys,
I will install on my Neo4-F v 3.0, 2 HDs, one is a Raptor 74gb sata I, and one is a Seagate 320gb Sata II. Which of the Sata ports is ideal for which hd? The Raptor will be the system drive (probably better?)
Also suppose I will use a sata dvd burner, and an ide dvd burner - will this influence which sata port should I use for which device?
Thanks for your support,
Jose

It should not make any difference since the Sata ports only have a master position, no slave.  Set it to boot from whatever drive you want as a system drive in the bios.

  • What do the Ram timings mean and does it matter which SATA port?

    hi
is it a thread or could you guys add 1. i just bought 2x p55a- gd65 mobos. im sorry i do not build pc's all the time. i buy every few years and try to get up to date tech..
my problem is. each new tech i go up say kn8 to an9 ddr to ddr2 etc. some of the wording in memory set up changes and or more setting options. im not sure what the 4 main settings are. say i have memory that is 8-8-8-24 and want to make it 9-9-9-24. im not sure exactly which settings to change.. i think 1 settings has cl in the wording- i know what cl is- im not sure of the others.. this lil bit of info added to the manual would help us simple folks a lot..
well maybe you guys could start another thread- maybe you can sticky them. or put all of this in a general new p55 build thread.. but.
i noticed in the manual for my 2 new p55a- gd65 and or on the mobo. the satas are stacked 2 in a stack which one is sata 1 and sata 2. its not clear in the manual. i want to guess sata 1 is the 1 closest to the mobo or pcb and 2 is on top.. i have not checked yet. but what about the io plate and say usb. i guess some of them are stacked and maybe a few of them. which is stack 1 or usb 1 and 2 etc. again id guess the 1 closest to the mobo is 1. but what about if it is a few different stacks. where would the count start from top of mobo or the bottom up.. lil things like this can snag us simple folks. but in less than 1/3 of a page in the manual for these issues could be explained with ease or by adding a few numbers to the photos etc. if i remember right my abit mobos always added the lil numbers what ever to the system photos or drawings. it helped to set up the system faster and helped even more us that do not build systems often.. we should not have to guess- a few simple lil numbers on the drawings would be sweet.
thank you if you guys could start a thread and answer these few things- i know it would help me a lot. i will have the rest of my 2 system builds by the end of the week.. i was just reading on the msi flash drive thingy- its seems cool. as long as my drives like it etc- i have 1x 512mb 1x 1g and 1x 2g drives. im not sure how much space it needs exactly. im not sure it said anything about that. it just said- make sure you have extra space- but not how much? i want to guess my 1 gig drive will be enough. i have to make sure i know what letter it will be called etc.. but i think i will be ok.. i more want to use memtest- i hope my bios will be up to date- or good enough to get it running- but i will check and see what is out and download it maybe burn it to disc etc.. i have a few days to get all of this together..
    * mods feel free to move this post if need be. i started this post here because its memory related or part of it anyway.. im not sure it is threads for these lil things- maybe sticky s in another area. im not trying to take over the thread or anything. im new here..
    thanks in advance.. see ya..

The timing explanations are all over the net.  For instance, at techpowerup, there is page explaining all the timings.

    Introduction
Have you ever wondered what those numbers “2.5-3-3-8” or “2-2-2-5” and so on mean? Or have you seen words like “CAS” and “tRCD”? These are the timings for the memory, or the speed at which it processes certain commands. This whole settings area can be quite confusing and you have to have a certain knowledge of it, if you plan on overclocking. But some of you may just be plain curious as to what they are.
    Rated Memory Timings.
        * CAS (tCL) Timing: CAS stands for Column Address Strobe or Column Address Select. It controls the amount of time in cycles between sending a reading command and the time to act on it. From the beginning of the CAS to the end of the CAS is the latency. The lower the time of these in cycles, the higher the memory performance.
e.g.: 2.5-3-3-8 The bold “2.5” is the CAS timing.
        * tRCD Timing: RAS to CAS Delay (Row Address Strobe/Select to Column Address Strobe/Select). Is the amount of time in cycles for issuing an active command and the read/write commands.
e.g.: 2.5-3-3-8 The bold “3” is the tRCD timing.
        * tRP Timing: Row Precharge Time. This is the minimum time between active commands and the read/writes of the next bank on the memory module.
e.g.: 2.5-3-3-8 The bold “3” is the tRP timing.
        * tRAS Timing: Min RAS Active Time. The amount of time between a row being activated by precharge and deactivated. A row cannot be deactivated until tRAS has completed. The lower this is, the faster the performance, but if it is set too low, it can cause data corruption by deactivating the row too soon.
tRAS = tCL + tRCD + tRP (+/- 1) so that it gives everything enought time before closing the bank.
e.g.: 2.5-3-3-8 The bold “8” is the tRAS timing.
(The 2.5-3-3-8 figure is just an example for memory timings.)
These are the four timings that you would see when memory is being rated. It is in the order of CAS-tRCD-tRP-tRAS. The lower these timings, the higher the performance of the memory. Some motherboard manufactors (DFI for example) list the timings in their bios CAS-tRCD-tRAS-tRP.
Certain memories can take tighter (lower) timings at higher speeds. These are the more expensive memory modules out of the bunch. There are also other timings to consider in your BIOS. Not all boards will have options like these.

It doesn't matter which sata port on the same controller you insert a connector.  This is not like the PATA controller where master and slave can be determined by the end or middle connector.

  • Using time capsule model A1409 and trying to use it as only backup. Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule. And also it is asking for password. Have tried all of mine and it will not work.

Want to us my time capsule model A1409  as only backup. 2 TB hard drive.
Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not want to use Time capsule as router, only back up for iMac.
Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule to Ethernet port back of my iMac.
And also it is asking for password for the server John Garland's Time Capsule so Time machine can access it..
Have tried all of passwords can think of and none work.
Held the reset button for one second on back of capsule and do not see if anything happened.
    What a conundrum.
Appreciate any help to get this working.
    Thanks,
    John R

I have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
    Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one),  then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

  • Wich SATA port to use

    Hello..
I have a Z77A-GD65 card. I WONDER HOW I SHOULD CONNECT THIS THE RIGHT WAY.
i HAVE A SSD DISK, sata 600 THAT HAVE MY PROGRAMS AND SYSTEM INSTALLED. i HAVE TO sata 600 DISK IN RAID (2tb Disks)
iS IT BEST TO CONNECT THE TWO RAID DISK TO sata 1 AND 2, AND CONNECT THE SYSTEM\PROGRAM SSD TO SATA 7 OR 8 TO GET ADVANTAGE OFF THE SATA 600 SPEED?Or should i connect the two data disk to sata port 7 and 8. Anyone that knowes what is how to connect this propperly?
    Sorry for my bad English..

I generally connect the SSD to SATA 1 or 2.
Then the Raid HDDS's to Sata 3-6 and don't use the ASMEDIA controller.
You can test to see what works best for you, but I have found this to work best on my systems. The use of SATA II w/ HDD's are of little consequence while the boot up delay caused by the ASMEDIA controller is a bit irritating. Not to mention, the performance of the ASMEDIA controller is not as good as the Z77 controller.
You are wright on that XMAD, even with latest Bios versions i though that wen better but on boot time bot not really, they just removed the info that Asmedia was on loading/ scanning.
Now about performance i already knew that they weren't better than the Intel controller but not expecting that worse. Done some testing with AIDA64.
    Intel Z77/C216 AHCI mode:
    ASMedia 1061 AHCI mode:
As you see reading results are so bad that i didn't bother doing writing benchmarks.
Seeing this i have to reformulate my opinion. In your case don't even bother to use ASMedia, better to plug your ssd in sata port 1 and the other 2 HDDs in sata port 3/4, use the RAID mode.

  • Access MP motherboard SATA ports when using Apple RAID card

I asked this question in another topic and thought I'd have better luck in a separate topic.
I will soon be the proud owner of an early 2008 3.2 G Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card. I have been given a lot of great advice by the regulars to this topic area who gave me an idea that I wanted to confirm would work.
Since the internal HDs are connected through the RAID card, that leaves the iPass connector free to connect 4 more SATA drives to the motherboard. The suggestion was made to use an iPass to 4 x SATA cable to gain access. But where to attach and mount the drives? If not the optical bay, the only alternative is outboard, but what to do with the cable? I also learned here that there are two more SATA ports on the motherboard, and Newer Technology makes a cable that attaches to both and mounts in an empty PCI slot hole. Very neat.
So why not combine the two? I am not certain, but it appears that the connector genders are such that you could combine an iPass to 3 x SATA cable attached to the motherboard to a pair of the Newer Tech cables, then mount them to the PCI doors enabling the user to attach 4 more SATA drives with suitable for another RAID, boot Camp or whatever. Does this seem a reasonable solution? Would love some feedcak on this. Thanks.

    This:
    > But, when I install Mavericks to 512GB SSD in PCIe slot, installation finishes without problem, but the system NEVER boot up with that drive.
It is not uncommon to have trouble installing, cloning, or booting from a PCIe card - though the Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD is one of the reliable ones, still, you should install the OS first on SATA II normally, then move the SSD to its new home.
The fact the SSD works on the ODD port - have you asked or looked for firmware update or anything from Sonnet and what they have to say?
With three PCIe cards to contend with, they may interact - not unheard of - and the USB3 may need drivers first to work?

  • Which SATA port on the K8N Neo2 Platinum?

Hi! I recently got a 160GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus hard drive, but I have read somewhere (i forgot where I read it) that two S-ATA ports on the K8N Neo2 Platinum will corrupt your hard drive data if you overclock. I dont know if this is still true (I have BIOS ver 1.8) but please could someone tell me which port I should connect my S-ATA drive to? (the only drive I have at the moment is a 160GB IDE drive). I dont want RAID. Thanks!

  • OK So which SATA port is which ?

Sounds like a dumb question but in the manual (MS7025 1.x from their website) the ports nearest the CPU are 1+2.
But silkscreened on the board they're 3+4
I'm plugged into the first of them which comes up as Master 5 so I guess the manuals wrong.
If I'm not overclocking should I still go for the nforce ones ( the other pair I guess) ?

Those left for cpu and over the agp port is 3/4 and is the nvidia chipset controlled ones , and it's thoose thats recommended to use first..
1/2 is the other ones controlled by a marvell PHY chip and is not good for higher HTT .

  • Which video port to use?

Replacing my current Mini with a new 2009 model, I currently connect my Mini to my 52" LCD via a DVI-HDMI cable, wondering if the mini-displayport or mini-DVI would be the best way to connect the new model (I will have to convert to HDMI either way)?

Good question. No Apple product has ever supported HDCP over a DVI port. Maybe that has changed with the new mini, but I doubt it. As to whether the Mini DisplayPort connector supports HDCP or not, it seems to be the case that it is supported on the Apple 24" LED backlit Cinema Dipslay. But whether HDCP is supported from Mini DisplayPort to HDMI, I have never heard of that being confirmed.

  • Which connection port to use on the Canon MP530 printer

I'm not sure if I'm using the correct port on this printer to connect to my computer. There's a port on the back that looks like something other than a perfectly flat edged wide rectangular USB port, but it has the symbols that you see on the end of USB 2.0 cables molded above the port on the printer indicating it's that kind of port. I have another port on the front of the machine that looks like it fits a USB 2.0 cable, being that it has a nice, wide and flat connection area. It has some other kind of weird symbol though that I don't recognize molded above the port. Am I confusing it with something else? When I use a USB 2.0 male A connector cable that I connect one end of to my Mac and the other also with a male A conncector to that port I'm having no luck getting the printer to be seen by my computer even after installing the latest drivers that Canon's website recommends downloading from its' site. Can anybody help me figure out if I'm simply misunderstanding the kind of cable I need to connect my printer to my computer?

I was using the wrong kind of USB cable to connect the printer and the computer. I needed to use a USB type B connector on the printer and a USB type A connector on the printer. My problem is now solved, although I still don't know what the other port is for that I was connecting my USB type A connector to. There's no mention of it on Canon's website or the papers and manuals that came with the printer. That's lousy manual building on Canon's part for this model.

  • K8N Neo4 hangs on reboot or shutdown

Just built a computer using a MSI K8n Neo4, WindowsXP Pro, and two 160MB SATA drives as mirrow1.  The install went flawlessly except that my computer freezes whenever shutting down or rebooting.  This was a clean install.  I used DigiCell to update the BIOS, and whichever drivers needed udating.  Everything here is current.  Anyone have a suggestion to fix this so that my system shuts down?
    Thanks in advance.

I experienced the same problem with a RAID1 (mirror) setup and was able to find a solution after trying the following combinations of software/drivers:
    Windows XP Professional + nVidia nForce4 v6.53 + MSI BIOS 1.5 = Hang
    Windows XP Professional + nVidia nForce4 v6.53 + MSI BIOS 1.6 = No Hang
    Windows XP Professional + nVidia nForce4 v6.66 + MSI BIOS 1.5 = No Hang
    Windows XP Professional x64 + nVidia nForce4 v6.39 + MSI BIOS 1.5 = No Hang
The problem might be a conflict between the old nForce4 drivers and the MSI BIOS.  The latest nForce4 drivers contain compatibility fixes that seem to address the shutdown problem I experienced.  Check that you have the 6.66 nForce4 drivers installed.
There is one caveat.  After upgrading to an AMD X2, my computer will no longer automatically cycle the power off/on during a reboot (shutdowns work fine).  Windows exists properly, but then the computer sits there with a blank screen; at which point I have to do a hard restart to complete the process.  Rebooting works fine when my single core processor is installed, so this strikes me as being a BIOS problem.  It is not a big deal to me since Windows exits okay, and I rarely need to reboot.
    Best of luck.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI Sound Problem

I've recently build a system using the new K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI nForce4 board, which has the Creative SoundBlaster Live! 24bit onboard. The problem being the volume of the sound output (analogue) is extremely low. All volume controls in Windows are all set to full volume, but the sound output is still very very low. I consider myself pretty good with computers but with this problem I'm stumpted. Anybody else had this problem? Any insite would be very appricated.
    Various info:
With my old SoundBlaster Live! Value the sound is fine
    System Specs:
    K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI
    Athlon64 3500 Winchester

    nVidia GeForce 6800 256mb
    WindowsXP Professional w/ SP2
    Any help will be appreciated

Ive been wanting to set up a new system based of this same motherboard, but all the power supplies Ive found so far have either been brands Im not familiar enough with or I havent been able to find a definitive answer on if the power supply supports that -5V pin(usually both, unfortunately). Can anyone point me in the right direction for a PSU under US$100? Any suggestions of power supplies anyone has had success with will also be greatly appreciated.
Ive spent about the past three days searching and have finally reached my wits end.
    Second edit:
I double checked the diamond forum link (it gave a link not found page the first time), I did get to see what was posted there, but since most online retailers and manufacturer websites dont give the best view of the main connector, thats not alot of help. The only websites Im comfortable ordering from also do not evne carry the suggested power supplies, or any other unit by those manufacturer.
    FINAL Edit (I promise...kinda):
I double checked on NewEgg (and then double checked FrozenCPU.com), and I found one from OCZ that doesnt totally blow my goal of USD100 or less out of the water. Lists a -5v supply, and is 24 pin for the motherboard:
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-104-155&depa=1
Same thing for 129.99 on FCPU, which is where Ill be ordering the power supply from.
I dont have any real need for the onboard adjustment dials of the more expensive series, and I really like the modular PSU design, not to mention the blue color scheme will work well in my blue-illuminated case.
Now, are there any other hurdles I need to be aware of?

I have a MSI K8N Neo4 that gives me severe disconnection problems when I use internet. This only seems to happen when I  shut down an p2p-applet (like Steam). I get no error messages, all diods on the modem are on, but I can´t get out on the net. This lasts for about five minutes, and then everything returns to normal.
I did not have this problem with my other computer.
I´ve tried to turn off the power saving feature on the network card (or whatever it´s called). After that, I´m out of ideas.

after much debacle of what psu to propel my MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum (Non SLI model) it has become clear to me that the only real choice i have within my reach is the thermaltake silentpurepower 480w, this is simply the best power supply i can get down here (Colombia, South America) and the most expensive one too.
i have done my fair share of research on the matter and have found a number of people using this power supply to power systems based on the K8N NEO4 Platinum, even some have been bold enough to use the SLI version of the board with this power supply.

it has a 20 pin connector and a 20 to 24 pin convertor, so you can plug it in both ways
from what ive seen its the same psu with different accesories, but its the same psu, so i guess this is it. Im gonna connect the 20pin to the 24 connector in the motherboard as those 20 to 24 adapters dont seen to generate any kind of trust in me, i guess as long as i keep my present setup and i dont overclock everything should run just fine.

  • P55-GD65 - SATA port and driver installs for SSD ?

    Please can anyone help...
I have a MSI P55-GD65 mb (AMI BIOS v1.2/012.020.000.015) and am about to do a clean install of Win 7 64 bit onto an unused Crucial M4 SSD (firmware rev 010G). After disconnecting my existing HDD from SATA1.....
Q1 Should I update the mb BIOS? I currently have no probs....if it aint broke....
Q2 Which SATA port should I connect the SSD to?
SATA 1-6 ports are Intel P55, SATA7 is supported by JMicron JMB363
    Assuming the next steps are:
plug CD/DVD drive into SATA 4
boot into the BIOS, enable AHCI and set the SSD as the primary boot drive after the CD/DVD drive
boot from the Windows 7 disc and install the OS,
Q3What do I do about installing drivers?
Allow any default drivers to install from Win7, then install drivers from the mb disc (starting with chipset drivers), then update them with the latest from MSI. Or what?
I understand that rebooting after installing each driver (and the updates) is a good idea (NickN from SimForums), but this suggests a lot of reboots !
If some reboots can be left till several drivers are in, at which points should reboots be done if there are 5 or 6 drivers+updates to install? I wouldn't be bothering with any RAID configuration or the floppy drivers.
    Finally..
Q4 At what point do I perform the firmware update of the Crucial SSD (to rev 040H) ? I'm assuming a driver install will be required for this.
    Thanks

I leave the internet disconnected until I have loaded all of the drivers. I also generally do an F6 installation with the most recent AHCI / Raid drivers available if applicable.
Once all of the drivers are install, I connect the internet and let it update.

If there is a firmware update available, the best thing to do would be to install the ssd in another computer, update the firmware, then place it in your computer. (or keep the existing hdd in for a moment to do this)
Data loss is very possible during an ssd firmware update.
