K8N Neo4-f v1.0 bios issues

Hello. I haven't updated my sig yet so here is what you need to know about my system:
MSI 8KN Neo4-f v1.0 MS-7125 board.
AMD X2 4200+ toledo w/ E6 stepping
2x 1GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC4000
EVGA GeForce 8800gts 320mb
3 Deskstar sata hdd (NO raid)
liteon dvdrom and dvdr/rw pata
ocz GameXstream 600 PSU
Ok so here is my problem. first of all, I have bios 1.B. I can't set the ram to 1T and make it boot into windows. Usually it hangs at the load screen or it tries to detect a raid array that is not there. I have tried all kinds of settings for the timings at the 1t command rate and nothing works. At 2T I can set the timings way low and oc the bejesus out of the memory and it runs fine.
now I have been told 2 things. First I was told that this board does not support 1Gb mem sticks at 1T timing. Then I was also told that this bios has problems with 1T and E6 steppings CPU's so I should update to 1.D.
So I flashed to 1.D and the post was so ridiculously slow. It would take a couple minutes to detect the ide devices on post whereas it used to take 10 seconds with 1.B. So i flshed to 1.C. same problem. So I flashed back to 1.B and now it posts quick again.
Why does 1.C and 1.D post so slow while detecting ide devices and why can't I make this mem run at 1T. Also, I saw a modded 1.D bios on these forums. What exactly would that do fo me? Thanks

Sorry for the delay but for the memory timing you didn't mention what voltage you were using for the Ballistix memory - should be 2.2V IIRC.  Also check the CAS Latency - I've seen a couple of MSI mbrds which read the SPD wrongly: instead of CL=3 they set it to 2.5 and the system was unstable, so I had to set it manually.
As for the boot delay with 1.D BIOS, I've seen that too in a system with an older AFreey DVD-ROM - I didn't have time to pursue things fully and swapping the DVD-ROM for a more recent Toshiba model fixed it.  You might look for a firmware update for the Liteons.  The funny thing is that the Afreey had been working for months slaved to an old DMA2 hard drive as master on the channel; when I replaced the old drive with a SATA HDD and put the Afreey as master on the IDE, it made the system crawl all the way through startup.  Seems like UDMA2 was just not working right and I tried several different IDE cables.

    hi i'm runningan athlon 3000+ in K8N Neo4 platinum edition v1 (bios W7125NMS V1.6 062305) and i have a very like problem:
today i tried to install freebsd(install started fine, nothing went wrong, i repartioned my hdd and the installer started),
for some reason i had to abort the installation process. since then i can not boot in from any device(cd,usb the hdd is in a
half way to bsd install state so it's not an option atm).
the post screen comes up and i can interact with it in a way(i can press tab and it drops me
to the detailed post screen,ctrl-alt-del also works i can restart with it), but i neither can enter to the BIOS setup /DEL/  nor the boot menu /F11/.
i've tried reseting bios settings by flushing cmos(removed the battery, pressed SW1. something must happened because the post now checks for sata devices
and the graphical screen/that one u can bypass by pressing TAB/ was not presented before).
it also detects my hdd and my cd-rom too. but still nothing happens after the POST.
others said updating my bios would help. but still there is no option to boot from.
if i am doing wrong something please let me know,
    thank you for your help
    Andrew

    the solution:
disable ide1/slave when the broken hdd is not connected and bios accessible; poweroff; reconnect the broken hdd to the PC;poweron; boot from a linux livecd; gpart/fdisk/something to repair the broken hdd;be happy life is nice
the trick was that bios and post is not messing with the broken hdd(while it was blocked in the bios)
so i could boot with a live cd when my hdd was connected to the PC.
since linux trixx out bios i was abel to interact with the post_killer_hdd (even it was blocked in the bios).
i hope somebody will be able to use it one day if something is not understandable drop me a PM.
problem solved im installing the os to the hdd, topic is SOLVED.
maybe the other guy who has some similar issues with his config/hdd could use this post too.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI and BIOS goofiness

A couple nights ago I figured I'd flash my K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI to the latest BIOS version, since I hadn't touched it in over a year. I was using 3.1, and I decided to use the 3.A. Big mistake. Computer boots fine, but immediately bluescreens as soon as Windows tries to load. After diddling around on my brother's computer trying to make a bootable CD, I manage to get back to a state where I can flash again, and try the 3.7. Same problem...bluescreen on Windows startup. At that point I just gave up and went back to 3.1, ignoring the 3.3 and 3.2 BIOSes.
Is anyone else having issues trying to flash the more recent BIOSes?
(I just recently found out that MSI's US site doesn't have a complete list of available BIOSes, while the Taiwanese site does. I might have to give 3.9 and 3.8 a try.)
EDIT: My system specs are in the link in my sig.

Ok, quick update. I just spent about half an hour with 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, and 3.A. None of them work except 3.1...they all bluescreen while starting Windows. I made sure to clear the CMOS completely, yes I left APIC/MPS settings the same (they've always been on default so that hasn't been an issue), and I tried the various safe modes.
    Here's the error code given on the BSOD: 0x0000007B (0xF78A6528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
A quick search on the 0x0000007B error code gives a fairly lengthy MS KB article, but no real solution. I'm at a loss as to why 3.1 works great but nothing else does.

  • MSI K8N Neo4 Series (MS-7125) Bios?

I have an MSI K8N Neo4 Series (MS-7125) and I'm trying to configure my memory voltage in BIOS because I was recommended to do so by the manufacturer.
But there is nothing in BIOS that has to do with memory voltage. Is it hidden or do I have to update something?

  • K8N Neo4-F 1.D BIOS cold boot issue

A couple of months ago I flashed my BIOS to the latest version for this board, 1.D. Since then, I've noticed that sometimes on a cold boot, the computer won't complete a POST. I have to hit the reset button and warm boot for the machine to POST normally. Once the computer POSTS it otherwise works fine, so this is a minor annoyance at most. However, sometimes after the warm boot, the BIOS will warn me that overclocking has failed, and that the BIOS has reverted to default settings (although I am NOT overclocking), although hitting the DEL key and entering CMOS it's clear that the BIOS has not been reset to defaults (nor would I want it to be). After hitting F1 to continue, the computer boots as normal. Is this a known issue with this BIOS version?

  • New K8N NEO4 Platinum build. BIOS recommendations?

I am building a new NEO4 Platinum box.  The MB currently has the version 1.1 BIOS.  I thought I might flash a newer BIOS before starting my OS install.  Any recommendations on the most stable/functional BIOS version as a starting point?  I see 1.5 is officialyl out, but have run across a 1.71 Beta.

    That's great
As you have a Winnie there's no urgent need to update your bios. it's entirely up to you.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum/Diamond SLI BIOS reports

    Hi,
I'm seriously thinking about getting one of the above mentioned boards.  It's between those and the new DFIs.  I've seen the link to the latest Beta BIOS available for those boards and they sound quite promising.  I've heard the latest Beta allows up to 3.1V VDimm control.  Anyone want to comment on the overall improvements made with the BIOS revisions?  Also, general impressions with the board with regards to overclocking especially would be very welcome.  I've done a bunch of reading, but there just aren't that many posts about this.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

The mods move overlocking posts to  the "modding and overclocking" forum!
    My observations are this:-
I tested my system using memtest at various FSB's which gave the correct stock speed for each CPU multiplier, 200x11,2200x10 etc. In each case Memtest gave the same speed for the L1 and L2 cache, indicating these are drven by the CPU core speed, not the FSB. This means there is no intrinsic value in using a higher FSB for CPU, the only benefit comes if doing so allows you run the  memory faster! You might say the AMD64 FSB is the on die bus which connects the on die CPU core to the on die memory controller. Increasing the FSB just increases the bandwith beteen the core and memory controller, allowing you to benefit from using faster memory.
So  yes, you can achieve fantastic FSB's with this  chipset. I have managed to booted at 340!  But this didn't improve performance one jot as I had to use a huge memory devisor. But if I had PC5400 memory my system would really fly!
P.S. For some strange reason running my memory asynchronously allows it to be overlocked more. That's why I boot at 250.

  • K8N Neo4 - strange post and bios operations

I have just built this system from new parts and upon switching on for the first time the system posted but i forgot to have the keyboard plugged in. Plugged in keyboard and pressed delete to enter set up. Changed system time and date - fine no problem. But when i try to go into other bios settings the screen freezes and nothing works.
When i turn on and off system tries to post but get stuck on screen that is checking components
When i turn off and back on without keyboard the system will post and goes to screen that say press delete to enter setup or F1 to continue. Sometimes it gets stuck there when plugging the keyboard in and sometimes it lets me go into bios settings before freezing.
Has anybody else experienced this or any ideas what i should do.
I have not yet installed OS, so could this make a difference.
    Many thanks
    Jamie

It can run from CD or floppy in DOS.
Here are instructions for floppy method:-
    Quote
      + Run from floppydisk
Memtest86+ is directly executable by any modern x86 compatible machine, by
writing the bootable binary to a floppy disk one can boot from the disk to
        run memtest.
Simply download the appropriate package, the Pre-Compiled Bootable Binary
(.gz) package for Linux users and the Pre-Compiled package for Floppy (DOS
        - Win) for Windows users.
For Windows, unzip the package into a directory like C:\memtest, insert a
blank floppy into your a: disk drive and run the install.bat file. As the
install prompts you, to use memtest directly, leave the disk in the drive
        and reboot your machine.
For Linux, unpack the package into your home directory, insert a blank
floppy into your floppy drive and execute 'dd if=~/memtest+-1.xx.bin.gz
of=/dev/fd0 conv=osync' replacing 1.xx with the correct version number of
the memtest86+ you downloaded. To run memtest immediately reboot your
        machine.
Your machine should now boot from the disk, display the word Loading
folowed by a series of periods and then show a screen much like the
screenshots on the memtest86+ web page. The test is automatically started.
If your machine simply boots back into Windows/Linux you will most likely
have to configure your BIOS to attempt to boot from floppy disk on
startup, refer to your computer's/mainboard's manual how to do this.
When you are done testing simply remove the floppy and reset your
computer, if ever you want to execure the test again simply reinsert the
        disk and reboot/start your computer.

  • K8N Neo4-F board and BIOS

    Hi everybody,
I was tempted to upgrade to BIOS v1.A recently from v1.6.  I multi-boot my machine between WIndows XP Home and various Linux (2.6 Series kernels) distros.  Before flashing the newer BIOS, my cpu frequency governer (using AMD's POWERNOW) was working perfect.  Is there a way I can completely revert back to BIOS v1.6.  Whenever I start my PC, it says it cannot use POWERNOW since it is not supported by the BIOS table.

Use floppy drive flash method (following stickies on this forum) to reflash back to the last bios that worked.  Good luck.

??? I'm kind of confused... As I said I'm using the same board with the same bios and I can see and change 1T/2T.
    Thanks for your reply,
Our mainboard are same but our cpu core are different. When I was using Venice everything was ok. Was using my Venice 9*300 with water cooling.

Where exactly are you trying to find this option in the bios? As Richard said make sure you enabled manual for CPU and Ram settings.
I know where I am looking.
User Config Mode --> [Manual] but there is only "Bottom of 32-bit" , "Read Preamble value" and " Async Latency value".

Please tell us exactly(!) what you changed in Cell Menu (core speed, HT, mem clock and so on), report your CPU model and stepping.
Did you clear cmos after(!) flashing 3.A mod?
After flash I remove my power cable for 1-2 mşnutes than press reset button. During post screen I enter bios to load failsafe defaults. After those steps I try to find what is good/bad with that bios.
Feel free to ask anything that can fix this problem.

  • Water cooling for K8N Neo4

I am thinking about trying out an alternative cooling method for my motherboard. Core Center reads my CPU Temp at 125 F and System Temp at 129 F on average.
Wanted to know if anyone has tried any water cooling kits that fit on this motherboard msi K8N Neo4 Platinum.

I have the regular CPU heatsink/fan that came with the AMD64 X2 4800+ CPU. I have a Cooler Master Cavalier 3 case with One 80 x 80 x 25 mm Front Fan ( intake) and One 120 x 120 x 25 mm Rear Fan ( exhaust ), also has like a CPU air duct on the side panel.
Just wanted to know if anyone with the same motherboard has been able to fit a waer cooling or A/C type cooling that will clear the voltage regulators or other parts around the CPU.

Anyway - could be fans causing it - I had my Neo not booting until I disconnected a case fan from the mobo fan header output.

  • K8N Neo4-F Bios issue

anyone know of a setting in the bios for the K8N Neo4-F mobo to have it display the option "press any key to boot from cd"    the issue i'm running into is i try and install windows on my harddrive.. it does the initial steps just fine, then after it loads the setup files, it needs a reboot.  However, after it reboots, it boots right into the same steps i just did.  So basically i'm getting stuck in a loop of formating/installing setup stuff
any help would be greatly appreciated

go into BIOS and setup as 1st boot device your HDD.(where OS will be installed)
then boot from CD-ROM (hit "F8" or "F11") to popup selection after post. and choice CD/DVD from there. proceed with XP installation as usual. after reboot installation should continue from your HDD.
