K8N Neo4-FX Boot Issue

Hey all,
Im new to this forum so forgive me if I do not address my problem to you in the correct fashion.
Im running Windows XP Pro SP2 on a K8N Neo4-FX board with the NVidia Geforce 6600 GT and an AMD 64 3600+.
I have this issue were when I boot for the first time in the day, my computer locks up when trying to load into Windows, it does not load any Icons but you can see the desktop. After a reboot, in an attempt to get into Windows again, it now locks up on the Motherboard bootscreen for a random amount of time, usually atleast 3 minutes. I disabled the boot screen so that it would show me what its trying to load behind the Motherboard boot screen and it gets stuck on trying to load/check the harddrives. Eventually it realises there all there and boots into Windows without issue. It usually requires 2 reboots before you can get into Windows. Now If I Boot up for the first time in the day and leave the computer at the login screen of Windows for about 5 to 8 minutes and then attempt to login and boot Windows, it hass no drama's. Interesting huh? It gets better.
I believe a secondary issue is tied into this as well. Once Windows is booted and I try to watch any type of media, all I get is a blank outline of where the video should be playing, sound working and playing correctly. This effects all media except Movies (.mov) which work on all occasions. No matter how many times you reboot, it does not allow you to watch any media, only hear it. However if you shutdown and boot again all media works without issue.
Now ill give you a minute to soak that in...
My original thought was, "Dodgy install of Windows", so I formatted and reinstalled a COMPLETELY NEW installation, even differant OS(to XP Pro from Home Ed) and I still have the same issues.
This leads me to the conclusion that the Board/Card is faulty. However if any of you experts or any other people can shed any light or similar experiences on this, it would be much appreciated!
Thank you,
If you want anymore info MSG me.

The problem is most likely with your HardDrives not the MB...

  • MSI K8N Neo4-F booting issues

Ok, well I'm a n00b and this is only my second build.  When I first put everything together, the system started right up and I was able to reboot no problem to upgrade the OS etc.  However when I gave it to my parents, it started having some problems booting.  Sometimes it boots up right away (if it's been off for a while)...however if you restart it, the fans run, but nothing happens for several minutes.  Then all of the sudden it beeps and starts booting like nothing is wrong!  So while it's sitting there doing nothing, I checked the D-bracket and it looks like it's sitting on the processor initialization:
MSI K8N Neo4-F running Bios version is 1.9  - the only setting I changed was removing the logo
    Windows 2000 SP3 which I updated to 4
    AMD 64 3700 +
Power Supply - Antec smart power 2.0 500 watts
liteon DVD burner - IDE primary master
a single 250 GB SATA seagate hard drive which is partitioned into 2- IDE 3rd master
2 sticks of 1 GB Cosair Value Select
    ASUS EN6200TC256 - Geforce 6200TC 64MB 256MB PCIe
I did try reading through the forums first.  I'm not sure if I should clear the CMOS or flash the bios.  At this point I guess I kind of lack the confidence to make a decision due to lack of experience and the fact that it's not my computer I'm messing with.  So guys, can you help a girl out?  Any advice is much appreciated

    Hello Jewels,
have a look at this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=80294.0
Maybe, it's the solution to your problem.
    Bye.
Your link to the other thread was enlightening.  A couple of things.  My father did install a card reader.  However, I'm unable to find those particular settings in the bios.  My father also has logitech's mx3000 wireless keyboard and mouse hooked up.  I unhooked the little reciever it came with and hooked up a standard keyboard and mouse, and what do you know, it boots fine.  Which explains why I had no jproblems when I set the computer up initially.  I'm sure he's going to want me to find a way to use them though.

  • MSI K8N NEO4-F SATA ISSUE

    System Specs:
    MSI K8N NEO4-F
    x2 512mb Corsair Xtra Low Latency 2-2-2-5
    VisionTek x850XT
Creative Audigy 2 Platinum w/ Live Drive
    (1) WD Raptor 10k rpm 74gb (SATA)
    (1) Maxtor 300gb (SATA)
    (1) Maxtor 200gb (IDE)
    (1) Samsung 52x32x52 Burner
    Windows XP Pro
Recently built system but I'm having SATA performance trouble. Let's start from the boot process. Sometimes when booting, the system will hang while detecting drives, and not detect my 300GB sata drive. A simple reset will sometimes fix this. If allowed to continue to boot, a blue windows XP error screen briefly flashes and the system reboots itself. Going into the bios and trying to autodetect the drive causes a long hang and no detection.
Moving into windows if everything seems to detect alright, sometimes the 300GB drive seems to function perfectly well, and for as long as my system stays up. Other times I'll go to open some sort of media on the drive (like video), and it will run rediculously slow, skipping and barely running.
I tried replacing the SATA cables, thinking that maybe they were bent too much or perhaps just bad, but after replacing them the problem seems to persist. This problem at first seemed confined to the 300GB, but my last boot to windows was crawling and anything i opened didnt respond, as the OS is housed on the raptor. So now it seems both drives are capable of this problem.
    Does anyone have any incite?

    Hi mjc2264,
It's the series 10 300gb maxtors that have been giving pps some issues not just with msi but all AMD64 Nvidia chipsets, its unusual to have Maxtor9 ?? give problems.
A number of things you might try:-
    1) Bios Standard Cmos Features  try changing the Access Mode for your 300Gb to Large instead of Auto.
    2) Detection is sometimes Worse due to the Pata channel issues. If using the Nvidia IDE Drivers ensure your
     Maxtor 200gb (IDE)
     Samsung 52x32x52 Burner
are Jumpered explicitly as Master/Slave the NV drivers don't like CS (cable select). Ideally have 200gb on IDE1 & Samsung on ide 2.
    3) If 2) gives no change Or if you feel the need    Roll back The IDE drivers & try the MS Default ones
Click update driver on the Nvidia Pata driver tab in properties.
Choose install from a specific location
Select dont choose , i will choose the driver
Then select standard dual channel pci controller which is the XP 1
    4) If Windows detects problems with drive access r/w errors it downgrades the drive access mode. If you have been having issues check in device manager IDE Ata/Atapi Controllers Right click properties on each tab & check access mode it s/be Serial ATA DMA for SATA & I think Ultra DMA 5 (or 6??) for Pata HD. If you find any down graded  Set them back & XP will ask to reboot.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat. boot delay with Canon MP390

    Hi everyone!
    My problem is the following:
My K8N Neo4 Plat. based computer got a huge delay (5mins!) on POST at boot (right after CPU name listing) when my Canon MP390 multifuntion USB printer is connected.  I already know its caused by a conflict between the printer's card reader and the mobo, something maybe related to the mobo trying to boot on the card reader.  Could be something else, but for now that's the only explanation i could find.
I red all post here concerning USB boot problems (or delays) and tried everything i could and red without results
Things that have been done (and much more!) :
    - Flashed to latest v1.5 BIOS
    - Disabled booting to other devices in BIOS leaving only floppy, cdrom and HD as bootable devices
    - Disabled support for USB KB/storage devices in BIOS
    - Unplugged Mitsumi floppy/cardreader combo drive (USB internal)
    - Unplugged front panel USB and D-Bracket2
    - 2 days of various tests with other computers, printers, psu, USB devices I had in store
I'm about to give up on this one!  ..  Anyone got ideas other than buying a new multifuntion printer?  Could it be a defective mobo?
    Thanks!
    Rivendell
    Computer specs are:
    Athlon64 4000+, MSI K8N Neo4 Plat.
    2x512MB PC3200 (OCZ 1GB KIT PN: OCZ4001024PDC-K)
    Sapphire X850XT PCI-E 256MB, WD Raptor 74GB SATA
Thermaltake Silent Power 480w PSU, NEC 16X DVD-+RW
Mitsumi floppy/cardreader combo drive (unplugged for testing purpose)

It might be related with BIOS. The BIOS 1.65 seems to resolve the quick boot issue. You can get it from MSI to try it.

  • K8N Neo4-F Bios issue

anyone know of a setting in the bios for the K8N Neo4-F mobo to have it display the option "press any key to boot from cd"    the issue i'm running into is i try and install windows on my harddrive.. it does the initial steps just fine, then after it loads the setup files, it needs a reboot.  However, after it reboots, it boots right into the same steps i just did.  So basically i'm getting stuck in a loop of formating/installing setup stuff
any help would be greatly appreciated

go into BIOS and setup as 1st boot device your HDD.(where OS will be installed)
then boot from CD-ROM (hit "F8" or "F11") to popup selection after post. and choice CD/DVD from there. proceed with XP installation as usual. after reboot installation should continue from your HDD.

    "...board is relatively recent."
If you think 7 years as "relatively recent" that is. That's plenty of time for caps in PSU & MB to go bad, especially in PSU and not knowing what the original owner had, bad PSU is a good possibility for damaging MB.
Original was a Corsair 400 apparently.
It depends how you interprete "relatively". All my stuff is older than that so to me it's recent.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat. boot issue

My K8N Neo has worked flawlessly until recently.   During POST, right after it does the memory test and before IDE detection it reboots.  Will sometimes do this 2 or more times in a row before completing a POST and booting the OS.
I tried updating the bios (tried ver 1B and 1C - same issue)  currently running bios 1.9.  Also tried moving the memory to the other 2 open slots, same problem.   Memtest and Microsoft memory diag don't report any memory errors.
    system specs are:
    X2 3800
    1gb (2 -512mb)  OCZ gold EL
    BFG 6800 GT
    2 Seagate 120 sata drives
    1 Seagate 250 sata
    1 pioneer dvr-110
    1 benq 1640
    enermax 465 PSU
No new components have been added or changed recently.  I don't have the D-bracket installed but I will and see if it shows a problem.

Here is the response I got from MSI support :
"Please install only 1 pic of memory to test it first. I will recommend you to install the memorys on DIMM 1 and 3, it will led the memorys run in Dual Channel. It may increase the performance.
I think you may also need to change the memory timming in BIOS according to the spec of your memory.
If problem presists, please apply for an RMA and send back themotherboard. We can repair/replace it if it is within warranty. Thanks. "

  • K8N Neo2 Plat Boot Issues. Bad Flash?

Well i just got my board in the other night and i had everything up and running and wasn't too satisfied with the OC on the memory scores i was getting so i flash to bios 1.55 from one of the sites linked from here.  Everything went fine on the flash with no apparent errors but now when i try to boot it gives me the normal boot beep then right after a  tiny faint beep and it locks up at the Platinum screen where you can hit DEL or TAB to post.  I flashed from a win98 virtual ram drive to avoid the issues of a bad floppy.  There were no errors on flash at all and it rebooted itself at the end.  I've tried to reset the CMOS many times and still nothing.  I've tried changing out mem, psu, vid cards, and other parts just to see if i can get past the screen but it won't budge.  Anyone heard of any simular problems and if so how can i fix it short of rma?

Unfortunately i've tried the bad flash for my bios and nothing happens at all.  The Floppy never even starts and neither does the light on it to read from the floppy.  I left it running for atleast 15 mins once and nada.  Wish there was an easy way to fix it heh.  Guess i've learned my lesson to triple check before flashing.  Any other ideas?

  • K8N Neo4 initial boot after shutdown lockup problem

First, I would like to thank everyone on this board for helping me solve all but one of the many issues I had getting my system up and running over the past three days, and you didn't even know it!  I found many problems similar to mine but I don't believe any exactly like it:
I can shut down my system normally however when I boot up it hangs just prior to the windows initiation screen where you get your mouse curser.  I do a cold boot from there and it posts until I get to the screen for a safe restart or normal restart etc., I hit normal restart and it finishes the boot just fine.  It does this consistantly, outside of this my system has been rock solid for the past couple days, I built it Wednesday.
Its almost as though it is forcing me to go through the safe restart process even though I had a clean shutdown.
    So far with no effect:
I increased my memory voltage to 2.8V, this helpd my old system with post problems and solved one on this board. (RAM running at 2.8 for 10 months with no problems on my old system)
Disconnected the IDE HD drives (I boot to the SATA 1/2 raid)
Changed my boot order all around
Disabled my unused SATA 5/6 (SiS)
Reloaded windows XP with the IDE drives disconnected
Disconnected and removed the printer driver
    Anthing else?  Ideas?

Antec Trupower 550 2.0, dual 12V rails @ 19 amps, Still had the problem with several drives disconnected.  Bummed, I can,t figure it out...I think I will go to a line by line post to see exactly where its hanging.  I may have mis-stated, I don't think it clears the SATA raid load on the first try.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum boots only with CMOS reset

This is my first build (and perhaps my last). The system ran without error for two weeks but the BIOS recognized only 2.88 GB rather than the 4 GB which are in the DIMM slots. I removed the power cord, put on an anti-static strap and reseated two of the 1 GB sticks. Since that time it will not boot without a CMOS reset. (But the BIOS recognizes 3.9 GB on most of my boots. On my last one, it was back to 2.88 GB).
    Here's my booting process:
Remove power cord and switch PSU off.
Put on wrist strap and depress CMOS reset button on board for ten seconds.
Insert power cord and switch PSU on.
At this point the system boots normally without my depressing the normal power switch at the front of the case! And it runs without error once it boots.
I can reboot the system from the operating system without problems. When I shutdown (power off), depressing the normal power switch has no effect and I have to boot with the CMOS reset process above.
Memtest86 shows no memory errors. A similar thread with Neo2's suggested setting ht = 4x but that didn't help in my case. I also let the BIOS load optimized defaults but that didn't fix things either. I'm open to whatever suggestions you can make! (If my signature with my system configuration doesn't appear, I'll post it in a followup.)

Looks like a Memory/Motherboard problem but I've never heard of it before or a low powered power supply could stop it recognising the 4GB so may be worth borrowing a more powerful one to test and see.. all out of ideas on this now
You were right. I borrowed a Rosewill RE501-BLK 3.3v@28a, 5v@30a, 12v@34a, 500W and now I don't have to reset the CMOS to boot! The case power switch still doesn't work--I have to turn off the PSU and turn it on again to boot--but others in this thread have suggested improper wiring of the switch which I'll check out. But I certainly can live with this since the PSU power switch is at least external to the case (as opposed to the CMOS reset switch). Now I'll go to the PSU thread to pick out a new PSU.
The BIOS on repeated boots recognizes the memory as about 3.7 GB (and Linux at about 3.4 GB, but I suppose that there are "good" reasons that OS's give a different number than BIOS's) and I can live with that, also, since, in an earlier post in this thread, I quoted MSI's "warning" that I could only expect 3+ GB to be recognized by the BIOS if I filled all 4 DIMMs with 1 GB sticks. But I think my 1.52beta MS-7125 BIOS also contributed to this increase. (My v. 1.3 BIOS recognized only 2.88 GB.)
I'm happy and thank all who contributed suggestions to this thread. Now I need to configure the software, a task that I know at least something about.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum - Sata Issue

My problem has a long story behind it, so if you want to read the full story look here http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1254531
Long story short, my psu died and when I got the new one back it killed my raid 0 array. I bought a brand new Western Digital 250 gb sata drive, plug it in and when I try to install Windows it doesn't detect it. Tried different sata drivers, updating bios, enabling / disabling raid in bios, different ports, different cables. Popped the HDD is another computer and it didn't pick it up. I am thinking my X-connect 500 watt psu is frying hard drives, but I am not quite sure. I bought an Antec psu tester which only tested the main 24 pin connector and it checked out fine.

Never been able to see individual sata drives in the bios. Before this problem started I was running a raid 0 array which I was able to set as my first boot priority in the bios.
I have tried many different combinations with the sata drivers. I have pressed f6 during the Windows install and used the NV raid sata drivers from the driver disk that came with the motherboard. Even though I am not running raid I tried it anyway. I know these drivers worked since I used them when I setup my raid 0 array when I first bought the system. Of course it didn't work so I tried downloading the latest sata raid drivers from the msi site, loaded them on a floppy and used them during the Windows install which did not work. Tried the same with the Silicon raid controller both the disk that came with the motherboard and the updated ones from the site. Nothing works. Tried without loading any sata raid drivers and same thing...no disk detected.
I am pretty convinced this Ultra psu is screwing up my hard drives. I bought an Antec psu tester today, although it only checks my 24 pin connection and it checked out fine. I might return this Antec psu tester and buy a better one that allows me to test the molex and sata power connections.
Thinking about buying this ocz psu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139001

  • K8N Neo4 Power Supply Issues

I'm having trouble getting my computer to even start up. I have the Rosewill Performance TU153 case and Athlon 64 3200+ processor, as well as 2x512 MB ram (PQI) and a seagate 80 GB hard drive.  I plugged the power supply wires into the AGX1 slot and JPW1 slot. Then, for the front panel connectors, I plugged in the HDD LED, Reset Switch, Power Switch, and Power LED into the appropriate slots in the JFP1 (with the colored part of the wires going into the positive slot). But the computer doesn't even start up at all. When I flip the switch on the back of the case, the LED will sometimes flicker on and off.

    Hi gandalf85,
    Welcome to the forum
What are the output amps for your Power supply - should appear ob the side of the unit something like like
    Max Output : 3.3v=??A 5v=??A 12v=??A
The 12v in particular is important with AMD64 systems.
see Power Suppy Requirements & Selection
    u can try the Quote

Right click the network connection to bring up properties.Press the configure button and then goto the advanced tab.
Unckech all that have "Wake" in it's name
Thanks! Under wake up capabilities, Magic Packet and Pattern Match were chosen. I changed that to none and it seems to have stopped the booting.  I am using the Marvell adapter

Glad the join the Forum, it´s great knowledgebase !
I´ve  gone through the BIOS settings you are referring to. They are like this: (And have been so all the time)
       1:st Boot device       [Harddisk]
Hard Disk Priority       [SCSI:0 Nvidia Mirror 115.03G]
So there must be something else, thanks anyhow !
I also wonder from where this message, "Boot from CD..etc", is coming, is it really from the BIOS ?
