K8n Neo4 No post problem

Howdy, folks.  Hoping that you can give me a hand here.
My girlfriends computer is having some issues.  It's was working find for the past 3 months or so (since I built it) but this morning when she powered it on it didn't post.  Looking at the D-Bracket I noticed that it stalled with the 1st and 4th lights red (Processor Initialization).  I looked the troubleshooting portion of the boards, and tried clearing the CMOS (using the Clear CMOS Button) and also by removing the battery. Niether of those worked.
We're using an ANTEC SP-500 PSU, and it seems to be working fine (CPU, GPU, NB and case fans all spinning).  The rear exhaust fan on the PSU itself isn't spinning, but if I remeber correctly it only spins up when required.
I'm really stumped here .  Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Well it sure looks like it has gone bad.
If you have a matched pair and timings on auto or correct manual timings it should work fine.
I guess you could enter bios with good stick and increase voltage slightly; 2.7/2.8v and try 'bad' one again but not confident it will work.
I had the timings set to auto, and being as how I really don't know my way around setting timings myself.  I think I'll just call that stick dead and look into some new memory.

Problem: Complete lockups in games.(no sound, no mouse, no keyboard, no screen activity) Mainly Counter-strike Source. Battlefield 2 sometimes freezes but it always happens with CS:S. I have tried installing the AMD x2 driver, Microsoft hotfix, the registry tweak to activate the MS hotfix, reverting to the 7x.xx forceware, trying multiple forceware beta drivers, setting affinity to 1 cpu, updated bios to 1.b, formating multiple times trying different forceware drivers etc. When I install Windows before I do anything I am doing a full windows update installing everything until there are no critical updates left and also installing the latest directX.
I ran prime95 on both cores for 7 hours and nothing was found. I ran memtest for 4 hours 30 minutes and nothing was found.
As of right now I should be recieving a Amd 64 3800+ (non x2) tomorrow from newegg and seeing if that works. Here are pictures of my bios settings.
Couldn't get the very last line so heres another pic that includes the Nf4 voltage.

Incase imageshack links die/slow heres an alternative http://urlx.org/dmservers.com/064b

I switched the ram to the 2 slots closest to the cpu and it then allowed me to change it to 1T. The ocz guy sent me a whole list of settings which I did but then when I saved and restarted it didn't post. So I tweaked them a bit and now it works fine. According to Everest I am now above the benchmarks compared to the other x2 3800+ on the nforce4 ultra.
1 thing I did notice was that every now and then I would lock up in the bios for some reason. As in I would be changing some settings and then I couldn't use the arrow keys to move at all. I wonder if its because I am using a wireless keyboard or maybe the usb to ps2 adapter is messing it up?
edit: heres screenshots. I know I am big on screenshots.

  • K8N Neo4 - F: HDD problems

Hi, I have a little big problem with my K8N Neo4 - F. I bought a 750GB hard drive with 16MB cache but the motherboard cannot detect the full capacity of the HDD, it detects only 128GB of it. I read that I have to update the bios version of the motherboard and then I wouldn't have problems, and I did so, but nothing happened, it still detects 128GB. Please, tell me what to do or does the motherboard support this type of HDD at all. Thank you and sorry for my bad english

Also after flashing the BIOS did you reset the CMOS?
Which version of the BIOS did you flash?
Please list your system specs please (like what I have in my sig at the bottom of my post).

  • K8N Neo4 dont post. Help!!

Hi, I just receive my new mobo, but it did not post at all.  When I plug the power, all fans spins (case, cpu, and video card).  But when I power on the case, nothing happens (no beeps, no light at the d bracket, nothing at all).  I remove the cmos battery several times (for half an hour, and sometimes for more time), reset the cmos, and the same.  I remove every component (cpu, memory(s), video card, hard disk), and place from nothing to one by one, and the same result.
    Any advice?

I'm suggesting that if you do replace the psu look for minimum of 24A on +12v rail.  Some get away with a bit less but is it worth the gamble in the long term?  Is it possible to borrow one with healthy +12v rail just to eliminate it as a cause?
That is just rubbish to suggest a failing or inadequate psu will have no trouble at POST.
rubbish? failing PSU yes, but 500W is hardly inadequate for a system boot. even further with no devices atached to the mobo - please?!
oh and p.s. from what i can understand ecuellar had this PSU before he replaced the mobo and it worked so it's not failing either. hell i suppose some guys need a power plant to run their rigs.

  • MSI k8n neo platinum post problem

I just bought a 2nd hand K8N neo platinum and I can't get it to post, I have reduced down to 1 stick of ram(tried all slots) vga and cpu running out of case. I have an ultra 600 psu that certainly should be doing the buisness as everything was fine on an NF7S-V2 up until 1/2 hour prior.
On the led device it's starting 4 red then after a couple of seconds it goes 1 red 2 red 3 green 4 red which I found relates to keyboard controller. I've tried with various keyboards but no joy. I get nothing on the screen at all but that's the next stage in post.
My memory is Twinmos 3200 twin x 2 x 512 double sided, which I saw in the sticky can be troublesome.
    Any body got any ideas?

i am having an almost identical problem.
First the system wont go past post, then i realised it would but only boot if i had the USB mouse unplugged (i noticed the d-brackets lights changed after i unplugged the mouse)
then i was able to get to windows, however i couldn't do much (mouse wouldnt detect if replugged, keyboard not detected - all lights off)
So i tried clearing the CMOS
now i am having the same problem, except this time i get CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded
then it tells me to press f1 to continue to del to enter setup, which i cant do since the keyboard wont work. so now im totally bamboozled
I've tried changing the PSU as well with no luck (both were 500watts)
Funny thing is, the pc having the problem is identical to the pc im writing on now, presonally i think the motherboard is not v good, since alot of people have this problem or similar to it. (and yes im using the keyboard and mouse now, that i tested on the other pc)
    SPECS:

    AMD 64 3000+

    Maxtor 160GB
    500watt Magna Dual Fans
Will check what the D-bracket says and will report back.
    ok here goes:
    (with usb mouse plugged in)
    1= green
    2= red
    3=red
    4=green
(without usb mouse plugged in) - but bare in mind i cant press f1 (no keyboard) to continue else i would probably be able to get to windows.
    1= green
    2= green

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum & Vbat problems

Hi everybody, sorry for my bad italian english!
In our mobo newsgroup (it.comp.hardware.mainboard) we found several users having this strange problem:
within a short time (may be some weeks or a few months) the CMOS battery of the mobo slowly goes down with volts till it goes under 1.4V and on boot you get a "CMOS Checksum error - loading defaults". Even if you re-enter the bios and put everything back, on next reboot it's the same.
We only found some affinities within the group of unluckies in bios revision 1.9. Even changing the battery seems not to resolve the problem as the few who have tried still notice the volts slowly going down. Someone is trying to change both battery and put back an older bios version but it's still early to state if it works...
    Does anyone know the problem?
    Ciao!

  • K8N Neo4 - strange post and bios operations

I have just built this system from new parts and upon switching on for the first time the system posted but i forgot to have the keyboard plugged in. Plugged in keyboard and pressed delete to enter set up. Changed system time and date - fine no problem. But when i try to go into other bios settings the screen freezes and nothing works.
When i turn on and off system tries to post but get stuck on screen that is checking components
When i turn off and back on without keyboard the system will post and goes to screen that say press delete to enter setup or F1 to continue. Sometimes it gets stuck there when plugging the keyboard in and sometimes it lets me go into bios settings before freezing.
Has anybody else experienced this or any ideas what i should do.
I have not yet installed OS, so could this make a difference.
    Many thanks
    Jamie

It can run from CD or floppy in DOS.
Here are instructions for floppy method:-
    Quote
      + Run from floppydisk
Memtest86+ is directly executable by any modern x86 compatible machine, by
writing the bootable binary to a floppy disk one can boot from the disk to
        run memtest.
Simply download the appropriate package, the Pre-Compiled Bootable Binary
(.gz) package for Linux users and the Pre-Compiled package for Floppy (DOS
        - Win) for Windows users.
For Windows, unzip the package into a directory like C:\memtest, insert a
blank floppy into your a: disk drive and run the install.bat file. As the
install prompts you, to use memtest directly, leave the disk in the drive
        and reboot your machine.
For Linux, unpack the package into your home directory, insert a blank
floppy into your floppy drive and execute 'dd if=~/memtest+-1.xx.bin.gz
of=/dev/fd0 conv=osync' replacing 1.xx with the correct version number of
the memtest86+ you downloaded. To run memtest immediately reboot your
        machine.
Your machine should now boot from the disk, display the word Loading
folowed by a series of periods and then show a screen much like the
screenshots on the memtest86+ web page. The test is automatically started.
If your machine simply boots back into Windows/Linux you will most likely
have to configure your BIOS to attempt to boot from floppy disk on
startup, refer to your computer's/mainboard's manual how to do this.
When you are done testing simply remove the floppy and reset your
computer, if ever you want to execure the test again simply reinsert the
        disk and reboot/start your computer.

I think this is related to the 219mhz HTT boot issue (as I was looking around the overclocking forums). I'm actually going to try using clockgen to see if if works. It was said in the topic that this is only on Winchesters.. But I have a San Diego.
    By the way...

Are you setting the 2.5-3-3-7 manually or allowing the BIOS to auto set them?  If auto that may be a problem and if manual are you putting the 2.5, 3's and 7 in the right place?
I manually set the timings to the timings of the RAM.

Other then 1T command rate, nope. Aggressive Timings is disabled in the Cell Menu. I have tried disabling 2T command rate, doesn't help. I wouldn't run the system with 2T anyway. This RAM is rated at 1T at 250mhz (which I have memtested it at).

    Yes, no change.

Try another Microphone or another audio input source to check if your problem is caused by your mic. You could use a walkman discman to check it, if you have the right connection cables.

  • K8N Neo4 Shutdown/restart Problem

    Pleaz help!
my problem is that the computer freezes whenever I try to shut it down! When I press the shutdown button or the Restart button, it goes fine until the screen windows shutting down screen and just sits there. Like its freezing up on this screen.
then I have to just kill the power to the machine to shut it down and then re-power.
When I start it back up, it shows no kind of errors or anything, just boots up normally and runs ok. I have booted up in the "safe mode"
and it still freezes up on the same screen
I'm using the latest drivers for everything
Has anyone had this problem and know why its doing this?
    MSI KN8 NEO 4 Platinum

    Windows XP Pro SP2
    X-dreamer II case

You have a service/program that is running in the background, and that hangs when it is trying to shut down. It is not dangerous, but it is inconvenient. The few times I have encountered it, it has gone away eventually, or I have found which program that it is that causes it. I do not know if it helps, but it might be a good idea to check your event log, to see if it has been logged.
I can otherwise recommend a program called Switch Off, which can shut down your computer. It has the ability to "force" programs and services to shut down instead of hanging the computer. It also has several modes of operation, some which are timers to allow your computer to shut down after a certain time or at a certain specific time.
It might also be a good idea to disable whatever program you run at startup, so that they do not start, and see if it shuts down properly when they are not running in the background.

The link you provided relates to a amd roadmap from 2004 interpreted by Anandtech. A roadmap is like a what-we-want-to-do list from a processor manufacturer it's not binding for amd and doesn't represent what was indeed released. Indeed amd did not release a 2,4ghz 512kb 3700+ for 939. The first 3700+ for 939 was 1mb san diego core (2,2ghz). The only 2400mhz 3700+ is socket 754 Clawhammer core, try yourself on amd page by entering your processor details: http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/Default.aspx
You can prove me wrong by posting the opn printed on your cpu (looks like this ADA3700AEP5AR). But I'm sure there is no 2400mhz 3700+ for 939.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum Audio Problem

I'm having a problem with getting surround sound to work at all on this system. There are a number of problems.
Here is my main problem I'm currently dealing with. At one point I was able to have my surround speakers work on this PC. It's a standard setup, 2 front speakers, 2 rear speakers, and a single subwoofer. The color coding on the back of the PC indicates green for front, black for rear. That's fine and dandy, however only the black rear output seems to work.
If I plug the green into the green, nothing comes out the front speakers. If I plug the green into the black, sound will come out of the front speakers, but off the rear channel. I guess basically my problem is that my onboard sound will not put sound out of the front output as well as the rear.
I've tried installing sound cards, but the system basically rejects them. It won't even detect any sound cards I install. Windows will give me critical errors if I install drivers for any sort of third party soundcard.
It's as if this system REALLY doesn't want me to get my surround sound. Any ideas? I have all the newest drivers for my board, bios, etc. Thanks.

I'm glad you followed my advice...
Quote from: blazing storm on 06-December-05, 07:21:11
Try taking out the card, uninstalling the original onboard sound drivers, disable the onboard sound, plug the card back in. Boot up, and now hopefully it will work?
    Great news that you're sorted!

  • K8n neo4 wont post after chipset heatsink replacement.

After I replaced the heatsink fan on the NB(it died recently) the machine wont post. I built it the first time, and everything is hooked up like it was before, never had any booting issues. The D-bracket gets up to the "Bios Sign On" and stays there. The screen is at the "Platinum" logo display, and neither tab nor delete get a rsponse. ANy ideas on what I did that is sticking me?

I have followed through several checklists on troubleshooting for the board(cmos battery removeal, starting up and adding one component at a time{this is where i found the no beep alarms for missing parts}, barebones start up and all tje like, and still its a  no-go.  I dont get any warning beeps listed for the bios, just one short beep on powerup like the board has done sence day1.  The lights on the d-bracket say the same thing, Bios Sign On, I'm at a total loss, and it looks like I'm going to end up replacing the board.
