K8N Neo4 Plat NB fan Speed problems

Hey,
I recently bought this system (see signature), and just today the NB fan started going haywire… I’ve done some searching on these forums and it appears im not the only one that is having problems with the K8N Neo4 Platinum chipset cooler.
CnQ reports RPM numbers in the upper 7000 (usually around 7500 RPM), and the noise it generates is intolerable.
I’ve tried to manually set the NB fan speeds via the recommended SpeedFan application, but to no prevail.
Can it really be that there are no solutions to this problem other than replacing the chipset fan?
If that is so MSI should really consider selling future revisions of the motherboard with a different fan, or, enable control of the NB fan voltage.
I really hope someone can help with this, all the other topics didn’t provide any other solution than to replace the fan… but the last entry to these discussions was back in May, so I hope additional solutions may have surfaced.
Thanks

It wont go any faster then present though.
In my case the fanmate with setting wide open produces a little less rpm on the northbridge then without this device.
the fan will spin faster if the voltage applied to the fan is higher, and slower if the voltage is lower. so if you supply the same voltage (basicaly use the same connector on the mobo) and keep the fan mate to full, the fan will spin a little bit slower since the fan mate already acts like a resistor, even if set at full speed.

  • K8N neo4 plat northbridge fan

The fan on my northbridge(K8N neo4 plat ultra) has died on me.   Is there a replacement that is orderable? or am I looking at replacing the mobo?

I had one of these laying around & mounted it to my Neo4 as soon as I took it out of the box - Because I heard plenty of bad things about the stock fan.

Very quiet, cools great (never exceeds 32C) & fits perfectly.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat, SATA2 and Shutdown Problem...

    Hi, new here.
Glad to have a board like this to ask some questions to other users.
Purchased the board a few months ago, and apart from the      noisy NB fan, all was ok.
Then recently bought a 200GB SATA2 drive (see specs in signature).
Since its installation, but not before, I've had a systematic shutdown and reboot problem: the shutdown proceeds as usual, the "Windows is shutting down" and "Saving preferences" dialogs come and then disapear... but then only the mouse cursor is left on blank screen (it can even be moved), and the shutdown process doesn't go further; after several minutes I just shut it down with the power button.
The event logs don't show anything problematic.
    A few more details:
My drivers are the most recent (official) from MSI.
I've installed Win2000 in ACPI Uniprocessor PC Mode.
The drive is recognized as a sata2 device.
I use the SATA#1 (nVidia) port.
I've put the pagefile on that drive.
Nothing is overclocked, CoreCenter is disabled.
I've installed the UPH Clean tool from Microsoft, but that didn't help.
    Memory passed lengthy memtest session.
Strangely, the SATA2 drive appears in the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" list in the tray, usually reserved for connectable devices (USB, etc): is that normal? (I'm new to sata drives)
I've searched this board for similar problems, but they seemed to be mostly in RAID context, which isn't the case for my system.
Any idea what might be the problem ? Anyone experienced the same problem (non-RAID) ?
Apart from above problem, drive seems to function normally.
    Thanks in advance.

@gerasimatos: maybe he used xsetup? didn't try it yet, will have a look. In the BIOS, all RAID-related settings are disabled.
@kakarocht: the power managment in the BIOS has the default settings.
Will try to change a few params here and there.
I have not tried yet other ports on nVidia controllers.
I may eventually try the Sil ports, in last resorts, BUT I would prefer to solve this issue with nVidia ports first (I think at the price we pay these things we shouldn't be precluded from half the SATA ports!     )
I tried to list as much relevant specs as I could in the signature and post. Here are others:
memory used at 2.5-3-3-7 1T setting (memtest passed)
    regular ps/2 keyboard
    ms intellimouse (using ps/2 connection)
the asus graphic card used in single monitor mode (recent drivers)
when I said "CoreCenter" disabled above, meant "Cool'n'Quiet" disabled (not stressing system yet, so 'cool' isn't an issue; as for quiet, if the board can't lower the NB fan speed, it's a non-issue!!!)
    using on-board sound-card
using onboard gigabit port for internet connection
    no other peripherals installed presently
hard drives temps stay under 40 C (not stressing system lately)
I removed DigiCell and CoreCenter from loading at startup (don't need them for now)
closing firewall (zonelalarm) before shutdown didn't help (although didn't try unloading the service yet)
... what else might be of help to list?...
Again, I'd like to know if it's normal that a SATA2 hd drive appear in the "Unplug and Eject Hardware" tray icon list; I wasn't expecting that, but I'm new to this kind of connection.

  • MS-7125 K8N Neo4 Platinum NB fan speed

This is the information I was given by MSI tech support. Even though MSI describes Core Cell's Buzzfree technology as controlling the NB fan speed it only works on certain models and the 7125 is not one of those.

I wish it was buzz free.  My 7125 NB fan buzzes like crazy, I need to find a solution to this annoyance.

  • SATA hard drive problems with k8n neo4 plat

Helo , I am hoping someone can help me with this. I have read Fafner's thread on installing a sata hard drive on the neo4 mb but the only utility program I found on wd site is called " lifeguard11 for windows". Is this the right utility to use to partion my hard drive? I burned it to a cd and and my computer will post but will not boot from that cd. I have followed the instructions that came with the mb and used the floppys at F6 but it won't countinue to install windows after that.
Also I'm not sure how to enable sata in the bios. Do I go to integrated peripherals/sata devices config. and at the top of the screen it say's RAID Enable. Do I enable that and then enable sata1 raid? I am only using one hard drive. Thanks for help you can give.

My system is similar to yours, if your just using the one Raptor you don't need any special drivers, your mother board will detect the Raptor with out any special settings. I hooked my Raptor up to SATA 1 (look on pg 2-2 of your book for the location) If your only planing on installing one operating system on your hard drive, such as windows XP pro, Windows will format and partition the drive for you.
If your having problems booting from a CD make sure you change the boot order in the BIOS (under advanced bios features pg. 3-8 of your manual) so that CD is before HD. For example, mine is set up for: First boot device = Floppy drive, Second boot device = CD Rom, Third boot device = hard drive, and etcetera. if your using more than one hard drive such as an IDE drive make sure you set the "hard disk boot priority" on the same page to the hard drive you want to boot from.
Once that is done put your Windows CD in the CD drive and reboot, Windows will guide you through the rest.

  • Max stable CPU voltage supported by K8n Neo4 Plat.?

My vcore voltage fluctuates between 1.44v and 1.50v. In the bios I have 1.42+6.6%(see my sig). I have ran prime 95 for 24h stable, but recently I tried OCCT(a french program). The first test ran for 30min OK, the torture test froze my computer within an hour or two. My question is what is Max stable CPU voltage supported by K8n Neo4 Plat.?Because obviously when the mobo drops it to 1.44 it IS NOT ENOUGH. Difference of .06v obviously is critical for the stability. Anyway it should be 1.425+6.6%=1.519 which is nowhere near 1.44. I currently run at 36-38C idle and 45C under load. Is it a bios problem? I use 1.6 bios and I don't have any problems whatsoever.
    Any opinions appreciated.
BTW tried to raise the mobo voltage at 1.55(1.50 default) but seems that there is no difference.
BIOS shows my voltages as follows:
+3.3v=3.12 to 3.15 mostly stays at 3.14 pc wizard shows 3.14, core center shows 3.22
       +5.5v=4.96 to 4.99
       +12v =11.96 to 12.22 core center shows 11.96, pc wizard shows 12.22

dont blame MSI for your financial situations. If you could afford the proper hardware then you wouldnt need to overclock and such. JMO.
I can afford the proper hardware.  In fact, I bought a DFI Lanparty nF4 SLI DR to replace the defective K8N Neo4 SLI board.
As soon as the new K8N board comes back from RMA, I figure to sell it - say half off.  I think for something that may or may not work as advertised, half price is fair.
And speaking of processors, these Venice chips are really phenomenal - they're just like (or maybe even better than) the good old XP1700 JIUHB chips.  I still have one of those - and strangely enough, it's still running - in an MSI K7T Turbo 2 board (KT133A).    That JIUHB served me well - it'd do a 500MHz overclock with no strain at all.  If I had water cooling, I bet I coulda  got 1 GHz out of it.
The two Venice 3200 processors I have both seem to be really good overclockers.  The one that was in the rig I RMA'd is the best - right now in the new Lanparty board, I've got it running at 2.5 GHz (1:1 @ 250 MHz) with about 1.55 volts.  It's idling at about 30c and only runs at about 44c under load - and the AS5 hasn't even cured yet!
That chip is gonna be one helluva overclocker!
I'll let it run at 2.5 GHz for another week or so till the AS5 has cured, then I'll see just how far I can go (without the temps getting too high).  The way it's gone from this point, I think 2.7 GHz is very reasonable for a goal.
And as I think newbie222 pointed out, as long as the temps are kept reasonable, there is no actual risk to the processor.
The point I was making is that with my old, defective K8N, that would not have been possible - BECAUSE THE BOARD WAS DEFECTIVE.  It was defective because the vcore did not operate up to spec (wouldn't go as high as it was advertised to) and because of the voltage fluctuations.
How would you feel if you bought a new car that was advertised as getting 24 MPG highway and it only got 17 MPG?  Or if you ordered Comcast's 8 Mb/s downstream Gold Tier and only got 6 Mb/s downstream?  Or if you ordered a 102 channel cable package that turned out to only have 88 channels?
It's all the same exact, precise thing.
If MSI advertises you can get a vcore of 1.7> volts then you fer damned sure better be able to get it.
The main reason people buy boards like the K8N is to overclock - it's the "enthusiast" community that the board is targeted to.
I find it hard to believe anyone would even want to buy one of these boards and not overclock.  What's the point?  If all someone wants  is something that will run at stock speeds, then they oughta save a few bucks and buy a Dell or whatever.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat (non sli) Device manager error !

    guys:
need some help. as stated,, have just received a k8n neo4 plat (non sli). just installed win xp pro (many thanx to people on forum for good tips on coming up clean). i have 1 problem, i have 1 item in device manager banged out (!), its a "PCI Memory Controller. i have nothing on mobo cept 1 6600 gt video card, 1 stick mushkin 3200 dram, i maxtor 200gb sata hard drive. searched on msi's site for this driver and can't find it. any ideas on what i'm missing?? sorry for not having rest of sys specs in sig but just got this puter up and running and i would like to get this driver installed  before i pack it in for night. thanx for any help on this one.

    igmox:
thanx!!! standalone drivers did the trick. when i was puttin this puter together i downloaded the standalone drivers and extracted them onto a cd. when i booted, anything in device mangler that was banged out, i updated the drivers via the cd. this time i downloaded the standalone drivers, ran the exe (unchecked the ide drivers, since i'm gonna try and run 6 dvd burners) and viola,, driver found.

    2 x Hitachi 80GB SATA II drives in a RAID 0
and other various items that need not be listed.....................
Anyways, i have the RAM running at 2/3/2 latencies at 2.85 Volts and I am looking to get more UMPH! out of it but Mushkin says i need more voltage. Is there a way of upping the voltage on this mobo? My previous mobo, a DFI board had an insane amount of voltage available but the board itself was a PAIN IN THE REAR! so it has been replaced, thankfully. Anyways, is there a revised BIOS that provides more volatage and isnt flakey? I would rpefer something that is not a BETA version, BETA=PROBLEMS. has anyone compiled a custom BIOS by making some revisions to an exisiting tested BIOS?

Well, I don't think there is, I've been reading about this, since I'm getting one of these Mobo's...
Either go for the beta bios or mod the official bios to allow the same amount of Vdimm as the beta, and flash with that...or google for some of Tictac's, Oscar_Wu's, etc modded BIOS'.
Maybe you can contact one of those guys over @ XtremeSystems.org and they may be able to hook you up.
BTW: The OCZ DDR Booster does NOT work with the Neo4 series.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat (MS-7125) v.1.D user manual/settings?

Since I flashed my PCB 1.0 K8N Neo4 Plat to BIOS 1.D a couple of years ago I've been sort've just winging it with the many increased settings that 1.D added.  I know all of the basics like clock and DRAM settings but the rest I'm clueless about.  Is there any official or unofficial post or document out there that explains these settings and what their optimal values should be?
    TIA!

Max OC was 3203 but for everyday I had it at 3080 for a couple of months and then I got some different RAM and had some problems with it and have it backed down to 2640 (240x11), HT link is at x3 (720) but would be okay at x4 which would put HT at 960 for the OC I have now and I went back to my old RAM. I haven't yet worked it back up to OC I had before. Neo 4-F & Plat. PCB 1.0 seem to OC better than other versions of K8N which seem to max out at about 2700.
Keep HT link below 1000, if you OC it enough that it goes over drop it to the next lower setting. Your 2500 clock is no problem at stock voltage and you would need to OC quite a bit higher for any need to raise voltage. Lets see what setting you have questions about before I go too far here.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat. boot delay with Canon MP390

    Hi everyone!
    My problem is the following:
My K8N Neo4 Plat. based computer got a huge delay (5mins!) on POST at boot (right after CPU name listing) when my Canon MP390 multifuntion USB printer is connected.  I already know its caused by a conflict between the printer's card reader and the mobo, something maybe related to the mobo trying to boot on the card reader.  Could be something else, but for now that's the only explanation i could find.
I red all post here concerning USB boot problems (or delays) and tried everything i could and red without results
Things that have been done (and much more!) :
    - Flashed to latest v1.5 BIOS
    - Disabled booting to other devices in BIOS leaving only floppy, cdrom and HD as bootable devices
    - Disabled support for USB KB/storage devices in BIOS
    - Unplugged Mitsumi floppy/cardreader combo drive (USB internal)
    - Unplugged front panel USB and D-Bracket2
    - 2 days of various tests with other computers, printers, psu, USB devices I had in store
I'm about to give up on this one!  ..  Anyone got ideas other than buying a new multifuntion printer?  Could it be a defective mobo?
    Thanks!
    Rivendell
    Computer specs are:
    Athlon64 4000+, MSI K8N Neo4 Plat.
    2x512MB PC3200 (OCZ 1GB KIT PN: OCZ4001024PDC-K)
    Sapphire X850XT PCI-E 256MB, WD Raptor 74GB SATA
Thermaltake Silent Power 480w PSU, NEC 16X DVD-+RW
Mitsumi floppy/cardreader combo drive (unplugged for testing purpose)

It might be related with BIOS. The BIOS 1.65 seems to resolve the quick boot issue. You can get it from MSI to try it.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat: Choosing new PSU & Want Your 2 cents B/T my Choices! :)

Read the PSU sticky and have nailed down my choices to a few, which I'd like your opinions on, if anyone thinks one looks better over the other. Here's the rig:
    K8N Neo4 Plat
    AMD Athlon 64 FX
    2GB RAM (XP Home)
    (3) 160GB SATA II drives, non-RAID
7950 GT Fanless (no SLI needed)
    Plextor 716-A DVDR
    Floppy
    SB Live! Drive
    Xion 600w (+3v 35a / +5v 53a / +12v1 22a / +12v2 22a / +5vbs 3a)
Xion has been a good PSU but is sounding tired at boot until it warms, and frankly, it's only been 2 yrs or so since I got it. After reading the PSU sticky, I narrowed it down to these three:
    Silverstone 600w dual rail: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817163109
    Corsair 550w single rail: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004
    OCZ 550w dual rail: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341022
A couple of these happen to be modular, and I saw the sticky recommended against them due to poor connections, etc. Is this still a general consensus? I won't be in and out of the rig anymore.... I built it a few years ago and use my laptop more, actually. It's become a second computer, so frankly I'm not too worried about connections coming loose. If I shove em in good once and leave it, I imagine it will be alright. But neither do I care if it is modular.... just looking for which one looks like it would serve the rig better. All opinions are welcome! Thanks!

Thanks Frankenputer and Henry, I was just coming back to add the P&C Silencer 610: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703005 as a possible choice, and saw you suggested it! That beefy rail looks good and it's advertised as being particularly silent which is very important to me. (One of the reasons I find myself using my laptop more is because it's so quiet.) I won't be adding to the desktop rig anytime soon... it's serving my purposes as is. And though I agree I could probably get by with the 450VX, for 10 bucks more, I might as well get the 550W for a little more peace of mind.
So between the Cosair 550W and the P&C 610W, which do you think would be quieter? I'm concerned that the P&C only has an 80mm fan and although they make a big deal about their "silent technology" it doesn't say anything about the fan having ball bearings. The Cosair has a nice large 120mm fan, (larger fans can spin slower [making less noise] while moving more air), which is what I am used to in a PSU, and it is a double ball bearing fan, so it should be pretty darn quiet. If either PSU would serve the rig just as well, then silence is the next most important factor to me, even more than warranty. I'd just as soon replace a quieter PSU more often, than have a noisier one that lasts forever.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum power on/off problem

    Hi all.
I just got a K8N Neo4 Platinum, and have a problem with switching it on and off.
When I switch on the mains to the PC PS(before turning the PC on), the fans start turning, and I hear disks spinning up. The PC power LED is off, but the HD LED is on. There is no picture on the monitor.
If I then switch the PC on, it boots normal, power LED is on, and the HD LED is normal. The PC is working absolutely normal, with winXP.
But when I turn the PC off again, the fans remain on, power LED goes off, HD LED on. And I can't switch the PC on again, till I have toggled the mains supply.
I have tried measuring what comes on the power connector. It looks like there is still 12V when the PC is supposed to be switched off. Don't know if that is right.
There is also 5VSB and PWR OK, but I think they are supposed to be there.
I hope I have been able to explain the problem in understandable english.

That the comp turn itself on when the different front side connectors etc isnt in, i dont think that's a problem with ur PSU.
Same thing happend to me when i forgot to plug them in a couple of days ago. I got a Tagan 480W, and its flawless!
Have u ever considered unplugging everything, and doing it from the beginning? ......
I have tried from the beginning many times, but it's always failing.
BUT..... Today I got a new K8N Neo4 Platinum from a vendor next door to where I work, and it works perfectly
I had a suspicion that the motherboard was causing the fail, but couldn't be sure without trying a new one. Now the first one is going back to the shop where I bought it.
Thanks to all for all the suggestions you have come up with.

When did the fan problem start?
After I replaced the mother board on the computer.
Why did I replace the mother board?
Because the experts at apple agreed with my diagnosis that the major crash problems & kernel panics must have some thing to do with a logic board gone bad. They would not work on it, because this Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz machine is now a legacy model.
What I have done to attempt to fix my fan speed problem? yes I checked the obvious things, here is a list:
    1) yes I checked to be sure that the new mother board was the same part number as the original one, and that all things that were unplugged from the old mother board - were actually plugged into the new mother board.
    2) all the fans work, I can see them spinning if I use a flashlight and look at them (cover on and off to get at some of them)
    3) check all RAM to make sure: a) it was installed properly b) that the RAM worked using TechTool Pro c) even started the machine with only the original RAM that came with it.
    4) I installed a Temperature monitor - to see if there was something reading as very hot inside that was causing the machine to continually run the fans at a high speed. No, no heat issues that I can see. Here are the reading from the sensors in degrees fahrenheit, 2009-10-11 16:11:01 -0500
    CPU A Die Temperature: 75.7℉
    CPU B Die Temperature: 81.5℉

    • Remove the power cord from the computer.
    • Wait two minutes.
    • Plug in the power cord.
    • Turn on the computer.
    7) followed the SMU reset instructions:
    Resetting the Cuda/PMU
    How to reset the PMU:
    • If the computer is on, turn it off.
    • Disconnect ALL cables from the computer, including peripherals and power.
    • If possible, move the computer to a place where you are not standing on carpet.
    • Open the case and ground yourself by touching part of the metal frame inside the computer.
    • Find the Cuda or PMU button
    • Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
    • Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the cables you removed in step 2 and turn the computer on.
    • If the computer still does not respond after resetting the PMU, the computer may require service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

    9) found a setting in the system preferences that a chat room person suggested had something to do with fan speed. In Energy Saver, under options, processor performance was set to highest, I set it to automatic - this did not change anything that I could tell - BTW I checked my other G5 (a single processor that works fine) that is the setting that that it is set to, and it is nice and quiet.
    10) restarted the machine, ..
    11) found a Fan Control System Update - but it did not install when I tryed to install it -
    12) booted from OSX install disk and ran that disk utility
    13) used OnyX to fix disk permissions, clear caches and temp items
Nope - still have the same high speed fan problem. ... PLEASE HELP!!
I have been reading in the MacInTouch reader reports - found this: some one said to use this - thermal re-calibration using the Apple Authorized Service Providers' disk - but that's not available, at least I can not find it - anyone? have an answer to finding this - or can do it for me? I am in Chicago.

The Genius at the downtown apple store said that because it's a "legacy machine" they would not work on it, .. so should I push them?
Well, I personally think that's ridiculous, I'd Push them, I'd call AppleCare & talk up the chain if need be... there the ones that have or should have that Disc... man o man... Personally I'll never visit an Apple Store again in my lifetime, maybe try an independent AASP if none of that helps!..

Man-o-man, pop my cork before I explode on that one, if I had anything to do with it I'd close that store.

  • K8N Neo Plat SM Bus Controller Problems

Hi, I just did a recent build witht the K8N Neo Plat and am having some problems.
My original build kept getting corrupt files from any self extractor that did a self verify.  I could install windows and the MSI NForce Drivers but many files got corrupted.  I finally figured out it was Bad Ram and replaced the PC 3200 I Was using with a stick of PC 2700 I had lying around.  I installed windows with no problems and all of the windows updates(which were where I was getting corrupt files).  But then when I installed the NForce3 Drivers from the MSI Cd I get blue screen of death, which I did not recieve with the bad ram.  I then revert to last known good setting and can install of of the NForce3 drivers except for SM Bus Controller. I have tried using the NForce3 Drivers from the MSI CD and a download version.  Both won't install, it still shows up with an exclamation point next to it in device manager.  I have tried choosing the driver directly, but I get an accessed denied message.   The only problem is when SM Bus won't install, I cant run my new 6800 GT at AGP 8X.  It stays stuck in PCI mode.
Also I see a lot of talk about CPU Temps reported by BIOS.  I am using the 1.1 Bios,  and it shows the CPU running at 65-70C.  Core Center shows this also.  Is this just a misreported temp?  Im using a 3400+ CLawhammer CG Revision with a Zalman 7000 ALCu with Arctic SIlver 5,  the HSF seems to be screwed down completely, but the temp reading still makes me nervous.
    Thanks for any help.
