K8N Neo4 Plat SLI - From Phoenix to Award Bios?

Prolly a stupid question, but BIOS upgrades always make me a little apprehensive:
All my diagnostic programs (Nero Info,3D Mark, etc.)show my existing 3.0 BIOS as Phoenix, but the MSI site calls the new 3.1 BIOS an Award BIOS.
Is this correct? Does it matter?

hi Private Idaho,
Welcome to the forum.
Phoenix took over award or visa versa anyway all the Nvidia Chipset 64s use the award bios.
If flashing from a floppy see Flashing the BIOS for Users using NON FAT file system
if you haven't got a boot disk get an image here. BootDisk.com suggest the ME 1 you need 1 with cd support as these use the virtual drive used by the MSI procedure above.
Enter bios & load defaults before flashing.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat SLI Drivers

I've been running the MSI posted drivers for some quite time and they seem pretty good.  Recently I ran driver detective and it pointed me to the NVidiaNF4 686 driver set for updates.
I ran the update and all seems well so far.  Then I read a thread were it's claimed that the MSI drivers give better performance.
Can someone give me the scoop on all this please?

yes i can confirm. MSI drivers gives best performance for storage device connected.
install MSI Chipset drivers, then install latest 6.86 from Nvidia, but skip "Storage Drivers" untick from installation.
for your mobo didn't tested, but you can perform test, use ATOO or HDtach and make benches with MSI drivers, then install 6.86 and retest. compare results. if 6.86 hurt the performance like in any mobo which i have tested, roll back to MSI drivers, and reinstall 6.86 but skip update storage drivers installation.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat SLI: Getting Integrated 24-bit SB Live! Working With openSUSE 10.2

From my research into this subject, I am interested in either some SB Live! drivers from Creative or an updated ALSA driver. Can anyone suggest which is most appropriate for openSUSE? I'm not sure if Creative supplies an updated driver for Linux anymore (http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/downloads/download.asp?MainCategory=1&nRegionFK=&nCountryFK=&nLanguageFK=&sOSName=Linux&region=3&Product_Name=Live%21+24-bit&Product_ID=10315&modelnumber=&driverlang=1033&OS=12&drivertype=1&x=18&y=13) but I also have no idea how to get ALSA updated given that my internet connection isn't yet functional under openSUSE.

I have discovered that it should work automatically. For anyone in the future that finds themselves in a similar situations, here's what you do. The menu options may have changed by the time you read this but should be similar.
From YaST, go HARDWARE > SOUND. Click on OTHER > VOLUME...
Where it says ANALOG FRONT, that's the volume for your basic speaker output (i.e. a two speaker setup). Increase this and click TEST. You should be hearing something by about the time it's set to 30, depending on the speakers. When all the speaker outputs are to your liking, click NEXT and then FINISH.
You may also find that no audio programs can access your audio drivers. This can be solved by following the instructions here: http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=30335&hl=
As best I can tell, it's a noob counter measure, built in to deter noobs from using Linux!! Good luck and KTBPA!

  • K8N Neo4 Plat/SLI

Ive been lookin the forums and tryin to find soemthing for a psu. And now tryin to find that has a enough amps on the +12v rail for the 6800gt vc. The ultra x-connect has 34amps. Is this good enough or are those psu no good?? If not what would someoen recommend. I want the onboard sound to work, i suppose ill need one w/24 pin connector also?? Any other info on this matter would be great!! I

I have never used any Ultra brand PSU's but I have seen a lot in the returns/clearance section at my local computer store.
You can't go wrong with a CoolerGiant/Enermax PSU with a model number of 465 or higher.   Lots of people (including myself) have had great success with them.
    Good luck.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI - Booting with USB attached

I've been unable to find anything definitive about this, so here goes:
I have problems with booting (hangs on post) when I have USB devices plugged in (i.e. thumb drive, ext USB drive, USB scanner). I am using v3.6 now, but haven't tried v3.7. I've received advice in the past to check BIOS - disable boot to USB device - but it still doesn't fix the problem.
Anyone experience this and know exactly how to fix it? I'm tired of disconnecting/reconnecting everything all the time.
    Thanks!

I decided to take the plunge and update to BIOS v3.7, which I hate doing because MSI tends to break things while fixing others in their updates.

I plugged in a thumb drive, USB scanner, and external USB hard drive, and it boot with them all connected.
    So far so good

  • CPU Fan Speed always LOW? -- K8N NEO4 Platinum SLI

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out. My CPU fan speed is consistently around 850 RPM, both at idle and under full load. This is shown in the BIOS, with Corecenter, Everest, and Speedfan. I have Cool n Quiet disabled in the BIOS, CPU Fan Target in BIOS set to 40 deg (have had it at 60 as well), and Windows Power Scheme set to Minimal Power Management. I've even tried enabling Cool n Quiet to see if it actually did anything...but fan speed is still the same.
It seems everyone else has CPU fan speeds in the thousands rpms. Mine never changes, is always around 850.
My CPU temps vary between 37C idle and 48 load when my ambient room temps are around 75 deg.
What's up with my CPU fan?
EDIT: Speedfan doesn't seem to work for adjusting anything. It only shows my CPU (fan2) and NB (fan3) fan speed, but adjusting the percentages has no effect.

Try setting cpu fan speed to max to access this open corecentre & click on logo.
    should give:-
Select user mode & set Fan to max. This info is held in the corecentre chip & is the only way to access it .
Only keep corecentre installed for this function
    hope this helps.

  • Anyone get 2gb Memory to run at 1T in K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI MB?

I recently upgraded to 2 GB Geil memory in my new K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI system (not the system listed in my signature).  I cannot get it to boot if I set Ram to 1T.
Has anyone been able to run 2GB at 1T in this MB?
    Thanks.
    fafner

    Thanks all for your comments.
I have the Geil Value 2x1gb dual channel kit. It is rated at 3, 4, 4, 8.  I can get it to run fine at 3,3,3,8 at 2T.  I cannot get it to boot at 1T with either the rated settings or the faster settings.  It will boot at at 2.5, 3,3,8, but is not stable.
I can exchange this kit for a higher quality kit, but I don't want to do that unless someone else has had success with runing 2x1gb in this Neo 4 Platinum SLI board.
The memory I have runs at 1t in my K8Neo2 system as my does my Kingston Value RAM (2x512).  It so happens that I have 2 Kingston value kits (total of 4x512), which I could try but everything I have read says it will run at 333mhz with four stix.
My experience has been that the K8N Neo2 Platinum is more accepting of value memory in general than the K8N Neo4 Plat/SLI.  I have also read that getting any 2x1gb kit to run at 1T in the Neo4 Platium/Sli board is impossible or at least nearly so.  That is why I am looking for soneone who has success (or no success) with 2x1gb sticks at 1T in the same mb as mine.
Net I want to get the best 2gb configuration possible but onle one that someone already has experience with (since I can only exhange the Geil kit once).

  • I/O Shield Needed-K8N Neo4 Plat./SLI

Does anyone know where I can get a I/O(back panel) shield for an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI motherboard? I bought it off of ebay with all the accessories except the shield and I really need this so I can put this mobo in my case. If anyone has one that they are willing to sell,or know where I can get one, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I contacted MSI Technical Support already and this is what they said With regard to what you concern, we would suggest you contact the reseller (the place you bought the board from) and have them help? Or you can also contact the MSI™ Distributor here, http://www.msi.com.tw/program/about/w2b/index.phpor MSI™ office near your place here, http://www.msi.com.tw/html/about/contact2.htm. • Max stable CPU voltage supported by K8n Neo4 Plat.?

My vcore voltage fluctuates between 1.44v and 1.50v. In the bios I have 1.42+6.6%(see my sig). I have ran prime 95 for 24h stable, but recently I tried OCCT(a french program). The first test ran for 30min OK, the torture test froze my computer within an hour or two. My question is what is Max stable CPU voltage supported by K8n Neo4 Plat.?Because obviously when the mobo drops it to 1.44 it IS NOT ENOUGH. Difference of .06v obviously is critical for the stability. Anyway it should be 1.425+6.6%=1.519 which is nowhere near 1.44. I currently run at 36-38C idle and 45C under load. Is it a bios problem? I use 1.6 bios and I don't have any problems whatsoever.
    Any opinions appreciated.
BTW tried to raise the mobo voltage at 1.55(1.50 default) but seems that there is no difference.
BIOS shows my voltages as follows:
+3.3v=3.12 to 3.15 mostly stays at 3.14 pc wizard shows 3.14, core center shows 3.22
       +5.5v=4.96 to 4.99
       +12v =11.96 to 12.22 core center shows 11.96, pc wizard shows 12.22

dont blame MSI for your financial situations. If you could afford the proper hardware then you wouldnt need to overclock and such. JMO.
I can afford the proper hardware.  In fact, I bought a DFI Lanparty nF4 SLI DR to replace the defective K8N Neo4 SLI board.
As soon as the new K8N board comes back from RMA, I figure to sell it - say half off.  I think for something that may or may not work as advertised, half price is fair.
And speaking of processors, these Venice chips are really phenomenal - they're just like (or maybe even better than) the good old XP1700 JIUHB chips.  I still have one of those - and strangely enough, it's still running - in an MSI K7T Turbo 2 board (KT133A).    That JIUHB served me well - it'd do a 500MHz overclock with no strain at all.  If I had water cooling, I bet I coulda  got 1 GHz out of it.
The two Venice 3200 processors I have both seem to be really good overclockers.  The one that was in the rig I RMA'd is the best - right now in the new Lanparty board, I've got it running at 2.5 GHz (1:1 @ 250 MHz) with about 1.55 volts.  It's idling at about 30c and only runs at about 44c under load - and the AS5 hasn't even cured yet!
That chip is gonna be one helluva overclocker!
I'll let it run at 2.5 GHz for another week or so till the AS5 has cured, then I'll see just how far I can go (without the temps getting too high).  The way it's gone from this point, I think 2.7 GHz is very reasonable for a goal.
And as I think newbie222 pointed out, as long as the temps are kept reasonable, there is no actual risk to the processor.
The point I was making is that with my old, defective K8N, that would not have been possible - BECAUSE THE BOARD WAS DEFECTIVE.  It was defective because the vcore did not operate up to spec (wouldn't go as high as it was advertised to) and because of the voltage fluctuations.
How would you feel if you bought a new car that was advertised as getting 24 MPG highway and it only got 17 MPG?  Or if you ordered Comcast's 8 Mb/s downstream Gold Tier and only got 6 Mb/s downstream?  Or if you ordered a 102 channel cable package that turned out to only have 88 channels?
It's all the same exact, precise thing.
If MSI advertises you can get a vcore of 1.7> volts then you fer damned sure better be able to get it.
The main reason people buy boards like the K8N is to overclock - it's the "enthusiast" community that the board is targeted to.
I find it hard to believe anyone would even want to buy one of these boards and not overclock.  What's the point?  If all someone wants  is something that will run at stock speeds, then they oughta save a few bucks and buy a Dell or whatever.

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum/SLI FSB 235MHz+ Bug Fix

OK after many days trying to solve this problem that I know some has.
It seems that the K8N Neo4 Plat./SLI doesn't like memory timings @ 3-3-3-8 when the FSB is pushed to 235 MHz or above.
The only way I could solve it is to run the RAM @ 2.5-3-3-8 timings.
Now remember, not all RAM are capable to run at these settings. If you have a Kingston Value RAM DDR400 you might have a chance by increasing the memory Voltage to 2.7v and switching the CL3 to CL2.5
P.S. Remember not every memory is capable of running @ CL2.5 when it is rated @ CL3
    Good Luck.

  • Using after market cpu coolers - K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI

Need suggestions. I just got the K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI with a Zalman copper cpu cooler I ordered. Unfortunately the motherboard came with the brace (backside) for the factory cooler glued on . All motherboards I purchased before included this in the kit for user install. How can I safely remove this brace so I can install the one for the Zalman?

    Hello there,
Well, there is somewhere in the forum some topics about this but i'll give you 2 solutions from those topics, one is using a hair dryer to heat the back plate and soften the glue, and it will come right off, the second is using a recent idea of dental floss that you can read Safer way to remove backplate from MSI Neo4 Platinum .
    This is my contribution...

  • MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI sound needs -5V; newest Antec 550W has no -5V rail

I came within a whisker of ordering a non-returnable  3700 Venice, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI mobo and an upgraded Power Supply, Antec's newest 550W PS the TP2-550 EPS12V ($117).  This has dual 2x24pin 12V 19A rails and is touted as the new V2.0 EPS12V/ATX12v compatible power supply for high performance SLI systems.  By accident I came across a page at MSI for this mobo
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mai...ail.php?UID=641
At the end is this warning:  MSI Reminds You...
    • For this model, you must use a Power Supply which has a -5V pin supply. Also, the users manual which I downloaded on Pg 2-10 says the same thing
The above Antec PS specs do not  show a -5V rail, nor does an Enermax 600W I looked at.  The V2.0 specs for ATX12v which added 2x24pin 12V rails dropped -5V rail from the spec and it appears MSI is not conforming to the spec (See Antec response at end) None of the web sites selling these PS & mobos contain any warning.  I vaguely recall from a forum a while back it may have something to do with the Soundblaster system in the mobo.
    http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=22551 (click specifications)
Isn't this a major showstopper which is going to cause a lot of grief for those of us upgrading to SLI systems using this mobo and upgrading our PS to the newest & best power design?  We won't know the PS won't work until we build the system.
    Regards, Ron
    Antec reply to me:
    >>>>Thanks for the link. Since MSI's website does state the motherboard needs the -5v, the True550EPS12V will not work with this motherboard. The Standard (http://enhanceusa.com/documents/atx12v_v2.01.pdf) has removed the use for the -5v rail and it is no longer needed. MSI has not manufactured that motherboard to the Standard. Finding an ATX12V v2.0 power supply with the -5v might be hard to find. You should contact MSI for a compatibility list of power supplys that were tested to work with the K8N SLI Platinum.

Wow!!  syar2003 thanks for that post.  I've spend an hour going through it &  fasteddies links.  Now I are a power expert.  The dual rail argument is enough for me to go back to the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI with one of the single rail PS -5V units listed by fasteddie. The only question left now refers to computerpro3  recommendation on ultra power supplies for SLI
    >>I quite simply wouldn't dream of putting anything else in my machine. Keep in mind, this section is for 2x 6800 models, not the 6600's which most any good psu will handle (like Antec Neopower, ocz 520, etc). . Pc Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe SLI edition (refer to list)
    2. Zippy/Emacs 550-700w models
    3. OCZ 600w (personally I would get the pcp&c for the price, but it's been proven here, so I'll be fair...).
These are really high end, expensive and only 3-4 choices. Since I'm getting one 6800GT and eventually another & possibly eventually a 4800 X2, I was hoping the OCZ 520W would do it but computerpro3 says Powermaster 520 isn't good enough for SLI.  I found that there is an OCZ 600W ATX12 dual rail which surprisingly has a -5V rail needed for K8N Neo4 SLI Soundblaster.  Will this meet computerpro3's preference for a high end PS for SLI systems even though I'm losing the 1 rail advantage.  Maybe the 600 Watts just overwhelms the 1 rail/2 rail question.
Thanks again for the teriffic help
    Regards, Ron
Wondering what you settled on.  I got the Antec TP550 and it's flawless on the board.  I even have the older 20pin model which works perfectly (including sound).  If you really wanted what I would consider to be a top dog (pcpower and cooling), and find the -5v rail missing, all you have to do is place a phone order and request they add a -5v rail.  It's a minimal cost and a total solution for having everything.  Just my $0.02
