K8N Neo4 Platinum 7125 - Switching from Single to Dual Opti - Startup Issues

My problem is the following:
I switched from Winchester 3200 single core to Dual Opteron 170.
The BIOS indicates it reading the both cores with the ACPI lingo.
I did patch the driver according to AMD with their specified download.
Now, when I start up the computer, I have to restart several times to get it to run but it does run although later locks up either when not in use or after an hour or so of gaming (mech warrior mercs)  ???
I have checked the power supply voltages and they are as indicated in my profile, but I am wondering if the power
supply is not the problem.  I know opterons' require a little more umph than normal single cores and this one is 4 years
old.
What do you folks think?
I would really hate to reinstall windows if it just a power supply issue.
Thanks in advance for you advise.

Reinstalling the operating system seems like awful lot of work if its the power supply.
But I appreciate the advice.
This rig is about 3 years old.  I will probably wait until I have some time to do this.
What drivers do you think I need to get the USB function again for now?
Thanks.

"Reinstalling the operating system seems like awful lot of work if its the power supply."
Get a decent PSU and re-test 1st, here can be found good PSU suggestions.

"What drivers do you think I need to get the USB function again for now?"
Just delete them from device manager, then windows should detect and install them automatically.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum 7125 not posting after overclock testing okay

    Hi Guys,
I'm having a real stinker of a problem with my 7125 board.  I have all good components, but can't seem to get this bastard to post reliably when I'm overclocking.  I was thinking that it was my power supply so I bought a new Antec Neo3 650W supply and it doesn't matter.  I also got a new Opteron 165 processor and it still has problems.  I even RMA'd my board and then sent me a new one.  Here is my setup.
    7125 ver1
    Opty 165
    Crucial PC3200 Ballistix
    Nvidia PCIE Gforce 6200 video
    Antec Neo3 650W
    2x Seagate SATA 80gig (matched) 7200.9
RAID 0 via the SIL 3114
extra 160 gig HD (using the Nvidia SATA port)
Pioneer DVD 109 DVDRW - pri IDE
Sony DRU-820A DVDRW - sec IDE
    Hauppauge PVR150
3.5" card reader (connected via internal usb header)
    Lian Li case
When I run the system at stock speeds everything works fine, including the initial posts.
However, when I overclock, everything is erratic.  Sometimes, I can overclock the entire system to 290x3, 166, stable memory settings, and prime 95 orthos the  out of it for days on end (max CPU at 49C), but when I select restart in windows, it shuts down fine, but will subsequently not post. I have to hit the reset key several times, then it recovers itself and undoes the overclocks.
I have tried all sorts of memory timings from the crucial info - it recommends 2.8V and 2-2-2-8 timings.
I have heard that my memory is good for overclocking, but I'm now starting to wonder if it is the MSI Neo4 board or the Nvidia Nforce 4 ultra chipset.
Could it be the Raid 0 on the Sil 3114?  I haven't messed with this as I would rather have a RAID 0 setup, then a little overclock.
Is there a good NF4 ultra board out there that is better than this?
I can't imagine anything else to do except keep spending more money to eliminate more variables.
    Your thoughts?  Thx Nick

relax your CPU HTT freq. by 10-20Mhz and retest.
relax your memory timings e.g. from 2-2-2-8 to 2.5-3-3-8, to findout from where its comes then find optimal settings.

  • Perpetual Laggy System Performance (K8N NEO4 PLATINUM) 7125

I was playing COUNTER STRIKE the other day and all the sudden the comp restarted but failed to reboot completely, meaning no post, no nothing but HD light on constant. I started removing all devices from IDE/SATA/PCI slots to see if it would reboot...no dice. I gave it a few more tries and still no luck.  I had to leave so when I came back, I went to troubleshooting again. I plugged in only my crappy low end GF4 card and IDE drives to see if it would and it did I looked through my BIOS to see if anything has faultered, since nothing was changed  I decided to plug my SATA drives in and blam again no boot/post.  I then reset the CMOS settings and wala it worked!    went to change the settings and then XP wouldn't boot up from my SATA drive. I decided to just reinstall everything because I like to start off fresh from fatal crashes. XP finished installing and still it wouldn't boot from SATA drive.  I installed all necessary SCSI/RAID drivers, yes I know it's SATA but it goes under the category of SCSI during initial XP install. I decided to repartition/reformat/reinstall and finally it booted off the SATA drive. after this nonsense was through I thought all was smooth sailing. little did I know I started encountering an annoying enormous speed decrease, every program I tried to load would take 20-50 secs (sometimes longer) to load. so I thought what the hell, I should prolly flash the BIOS. I then flashed to 1.6 and still no dice. I then went through flashing all the 1.7's and still had the same daym problem.  all drivers that I installed are the most recent. I'm now perplexed what to do from here?    has anyone else encountered this problem?
I also have another question, what are average temps for everyone's CPU with the stock AMD HSF?

ok I had to speak too soon. I'm now encountering the daym load lag again but it's not as consistent as it was before. the PSU I tested again today is a FORTRON 530W the specs are as noted... +3.3V@30/17A,+5V@44/24A,[email protected],+12V@16/28A,[email protected],+5VSB@2A. he wouldn't bring his RAM over since he's afraid it'll somehow it up and past it's RMA warranty, it's understandable though. do yall think increasing RAM voltage might possibly alleviate the issue? it's currently set at 2.65 stock. I can test PSU for figures but I don't know how to do so without load unless both the 20 pin and 4 pin connectors can be left out to test? sorry for the vulgarity but I'm starting to get frustrated as all hell.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum not booting

Hi I just moved my fully working K8N Neo4 Platinum based setup from one case to another, and now it's not booting. All fans are starting but the USB D-bracket 2 shows LED's 1 and 4 yellow and 2 and 3 red and the computer hangs. I can't seem to find this LED combination in the manual where it's only supposed to show green and red lights. Anyone got any idea of what's wrong?
    Thanks

Okay I'll try to be more specific, the thing that makes me clueless is that the rig has been working flawlessly before.
    CPU/Memory:
    AMD Athlon64 Venice 90nm 3500+ 2.2GHz
2x512 MB OCZ DDR PC-4000 Gold VX (500 Mhz, 2-2-2-8)
I've tried unmounting every single component and mounting it back on again. I've tried both memory sticks in a single slot but no luck.
The PSU it's been running on is an Antec True380SP 380W (included in Antec Sonata case), yes 380W is a bit low so i tried a beefier PSU as well (Antec True430P 430W) with the same result.
    Max Amperage:
    Antec True430P 430W -- +3.3V = 28A, +5V = 36A, +12V = 20A
    Antec True380SP 380W -- +3.3V = 28A, +5V = 35A, +12V = 24A
    HDD:
    Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74Gb 10000rpm 16Mb cache SATA connected to SATA1
All fans power up, Power LED lights up and HDD powers up, but no VGA signal. I've reset CMOS and I've read through the stickies and tried the fixes there applicable to my problems, but no luck so far. Only thing I can think of that haven't tried is switching the CMOS battery.

  • Another K8N Neo4 Platinum Happy Build

Just built another setup using the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, 7125-010. The build went very smoothly and I am very pleased with the results. Used the following components:

    Rosewill RV500S PSU ( +3.3v=30a, +5v=45a, +12v=26a )
    AMD64 3700 SD @ 2.211
    2- 92mm Silverstone case fans
    1- WD 40GB Sata HD
    1- Liteon DVD/RW SHM-160P6S
    1- Sony 52X CD-Rom
    1- Sony Floppy
    System Temp @ idle = 30c, CPU Temp @ idle = 33c, GPU Temp @ idle = 43c
I did notice some slight changes in the Bios setup features that have been added since purchasing the same board 2 months ago. MSI has very good products and I am very happy with the results of all 3 machines built in the last 18 months. Just wanted to post something on the positive side today.

  • Single Channel Dual Channel Question, K8N Neo4 Platinum

Just putting together a machine for the Daughter. Using MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum board 7125-010, MSI NX6600GT PCIE 128 Video card with AMD64 3700 CPU SD and a 1 GB stick of Crucial dual sided memory, CT12864Z40B, DDR 400 3200. The rest of my parts arrived and just got it all together and booted into the Bios. The boot screen tells me the memory is DDR Single Cannel, 64 bit running at 3-3-8-3 and 2T timings. I have been into the Bios setup, but had let the memory boot at Auto settings. Is what I am seeing on this screen OK because there is only one stick of memory installed? Or am I just confused as normal? I was thinking it should read Dual Channel, but I am hoping that is just my backwards thinking at times. I wish all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks in advance for the guidance.
    Pop's

JayBee; Thank you very much for the quick response. The Daughter decided to go with the 1GB stick to begin with so as to possibly add another 1GB stick later. I don't think she will need it myself, judging by her computer use. She does no gaming or multi-tasking, so there probably will be no need to add more memory in the future. I was just wondering if there is any noticable performance hit by using a single stick vs a pair of matched 512's?? I used the same MB as in my sig, but noticed the new one has an upgraded BIOS. I hope it is an improvement, because I have yet had no problems with my machine which has the V1.6 BIOS. This new one which is about 2 months newer than mine has a BIOS V1.A in the bios screen. At bootup it is identified as ( 6A61FM49C-OO ) what ever that means. I read the forum daily and have noticed you are very active and consice in helping folks out. I very much appreciate your time and effort that you give freely. Hope you have a very safe and happy holiday season and SANTA is very good to you. I think we as a group need to get SANTA up to speed on gift giving in the computer upgrade department.

The system now displaces a new Bios boot screen and the boot up number is now 5.2.16.
XP all up to date and LAN drivers up to date.
I am seeing a saw tooth ping to my WestTel DSL modem. On all of the other PCs here on my LAN the first hop is always 0ms.  After updating the mother board bios and turning on the LAN memory I still get 0ms to 7 or 10 ms.
You can see more detals at http://webviper.com/LanIssues.htm
Any Ideas please email me at [email protected]

Sorry the system did not email me.....
I did update the BIOS and I used the liveupdate.  I also updated the NVIDA drivers with a link that MSI sent me.  This did help things out a lot but the issue is still there.  I have updated the web page with more info and pics.  I have disabled the Xp firewall and have hooked the pc up to the westtell dsl modem.
After a reboot things run fine for about three hours...  Then it starts and get worse as time goes on.  It is not a heat issue as my new case has 10 fans and the read out of the CPU is good!   34C
Thanks for the help.... Here is some more data...  Do look at http://webviper.com/LanIssues.htm

MSI support sent me a link for updated NVIDA drivers and that helped the issue some.  I do not have the link to the drivers as my link to the MSI support is not working now.  Not sure if they have deleted it or if their system is down.

  • Can't Boot from CD still K8N Neo4 MS-7125

I made several boot CDs, but am unable to boot from them.  I don't have a floppy.  I want to flash my bios.  I tried to read every post related to my problem but could not find a match exactly so that's why I'm  posting.
    The error says
EMM 386 Address line A20 already enabled.
The other posts say to simply set the Gate A20 option to FAST.  I went through my Bios settings several times and don't have any kind of Gate A20 option to set.
Win Xp tells me my Bios is v1.0 but my Bios says my Bios is 1.5 and I'm trying to Flash to v 1.8.
I've tried everything I could think of.
    Win Xp Home
    K8N Neo4 MS 7125 Platinum

I don't have access to the Internet on my computer, I'm typing this on my friends computer.  I found a way to get around the problem though temporarily until I can figure out a way to create a bootable
    CD.
My work around was this.  I created several boot CDs from several different software programs, none of them worked.  I tried Ultimate Boot CD UBCD. and there was an option called go to Dos level using Madboot.  I went to DOS level and tried running the flash utility on my C: drive but it came back with the message ' unknown file or program'.  Then I tried putting in a CD into the CDrom drive that I burned earlier with the files for flashing the BIOS and ran them from there.   Why didn't they run on my C: drive and only on my CDrom drive? I don't know, but it worked.
    Thanks

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum (MS-7125) DIMM Memory Setup

im planning to install two Kingston value ram KVR400X64C3A/512 on my K8N NEO4 Platinum board, this two modules although identical feature double side chip arrangement, i an also well aware from reading the board manual that dual channel installation of these modules will actually slow down the performance of the memory,
what would be the best setup for these to modules?
im planning on installing one module in DIMM1 and the other in DIMM2, is that the best recommendable arrangement for this type of DIMMS?
also this DIMMS use 2.6v, and the board default setup is 2.5v, should i leave the default settings or do i need to make any changes in the bios configuration for these to work properly?

I would go with a dualchannel config.
Confirm dualchannel mode on boot screen or with cpu-z software
    http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php
To compare differant memory configs, you can get a rough performance idea by running sisoft sandra mem.benchmark.
    http://download.guru3d.com/sandra/
Never go below RAM voltage recommendation.
I rather upper the voltage to 2.7 for best stability.
