K8N Neo4 platinum edition v1 (bios W7125NMS V1.6 062305) -- after POST stucked

hi i'm runningan athlon 3000+ in K8N Neo4 platinum edition v1 (bios W7125NMS V1.6 062305) and i have a very like problem:
today i tried to install freebsd(install started fine, nothing went wrong, i repartioned my hdd and the installer started),
for some reason i had to abort the installation process. since then i can not boot in from any device(cd,usb the hdd is in a
half way to bsd install state so it's not an option atm).
the post screen comes up and i can interact with it in a way(i can press tab and it drops me
to the detailed post screen,ctrl-alt-del also works i can restart with it), but i neither can enter to the BIOS setup /DEL/  nor the boot menu /F11/.
i've tried reseting bios settings by flushing cmos(removed the battery, pressed SW1. something must happened because the post now checks for sata devices
and the graphical screen/that one u can bypass by pressing TAB/ was not presented before).
it also detects my hdd and my cd-rom too. but still nothing happens after the POST.
others said updating my bios would help. but still there is no option to boot from.
if i am doing wrong something please let me know,
thank you for your help
Andrew

the solution:
disable ide1/slave when the broken hdd is not connected and bios accessible; poweroff; reconnect the broken hdd to the PC;poweron; boot from a linux livecd; gpart/fdisk/something to repair the broken hdd;be happy life is nice
the trick was that bios and post is not messing with the broken hdd(while it was blocked in the bios)
so i could boot with a live cd when my hdd was connected to the PC.
since linux trixx out bios i was abel to interact with the post_killer_hdd (even it was blocked in the bios).
i hope somebody will be able to use it one day if something is not understandable drop me a PM.
problem solved im installing the os to the hdd, topic is SOLVED.
maybe the other guy who has some similar issues with his config/hdd could use this post too.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI and BIOS goofiness

A couple nights ago I figured I'd flash my K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI to the latest BIOS version, since I hadn't touched it in over a year. I was using 3.1, and I decided to use the 3.A. Big mistake. Computer boots fine, but immediately bluescreens as soon as Windows tries to load. After diddling around on my brother's computer trying to make a bootable CD, I manage to get back to a state where I can flash again, and try the 3.7. Same problem...bluescreen on Windows startup. At that point I just gave up and went back to 3.1, ignoring the 3.3 and 3.2 BIOSes.
Is anyone else having issues trying to flash the more recent BIOSes?
(I just recently found out that MSI's US site doesn't have a complete list of available BIOSes, while the Taiwanese site does. I might have to give 3.9 and 3.8 a try.)
EDIT: My system specs are in the link in my sig.

Ok, quick update. I just spent about half an hour with 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, and 3.A. None of them work except 3.1...they all bluescreen while starting Windows. I made sure to clear the CMOS completely, yes I left APIC/MPS settings the same (they've always been on default so that hasn't been an issue), and I tried the various safe modes.
    Here's the error code given on the BSOD: 0x0000007B (0xF78A6528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
A quick search on the 0x0000007B error code gives a fairly lengthy MS KB article, but no real solution. I'm at a loss as to why 3.1 works great but nothing else does.

  • New K8N NEO4 Platinum build. BIOS recommendations?

I am building a new NEO4 Platinum box.  The MB currently has the version 1.1 BIOS.  I thought I might flash a newer BIOS before starting my OS install.  Any recommendations on the most stable/functional BIOS version as a starting point?  I see 1.5 is officialyl out, but have run across a 1.71 Beta.

    That's great
As you have a Winnie there's no urgent need to update your bios. it's entirely up to you.

  • Can't get K8N Neo4 Platinum Edition to post with Dual Core 3800 Processor

I'm doing a sytem build with a K8N neo 4 Platinum board bought second hand off Ebay and can't get the board to post - when I power up all the fans etc come on but there is no beep and the "D" bracket lights stay on solid - 2 amber and 2 red. Having read numerous posts on this forum I've fiddled about with memory in different slots etc and pressed the reset CMOS button but to no avail.
The problem is (apart from the possibility I've been sold a "duff " board !) that I've no idea what version of BIOS is on the board and of course I can't get into the BIOS to see or update it. I understand a BIOS update may be required for the dual core processor - does this mean that if the board doesn't have the correct BIOS it won't recognize the CPU at all which is why I am getting these symptons? Alternatively could the problem lie elsewhere ? I do have another computer with an AMD single core CPU but at this stage don't really fancy taking out this CPU and trying it in the K8N board.
    Any advice would be appreciated

-Take the motherboard out of case.
-Unplug all hardwares and power cords, then clear CMOS as the mannual has described.
    - Plug one memory, VGA card and power cords, then start the system and check if it could boot.
-If it still couldn't boot, check the CPU support tableand make sure your board support this board. After this, I think you should take another single CPU to the board to check if it could boot. If it could, try flash bios to the latest one so that this board could support this CPU.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum/Diamond SLI BIOS reports

    Hi,
I'm seriously thinking about getting one of the above mentioned boards.  It's between those and the new DFIs.  I've seen the link to the latest Beta BIOS available for those boards and they sound quite promising.  I've heard the latest Beta allows up to 3.1V VDimm control.  Anyone want to comment on the overall improvements made with the BIOS revisions?  Also, general impressions with the board with regards to overclocking especially would be very welcome.  I've done a bunch of reading, but there just aren't that many posts about this.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

The mods move overlocking posts to  the "modding and overclocking" forum!
    My observations are this:-
I tested my system using memtest at various FSB's which gave the correct stock speed for each CPU multiplier, 200x11,2200x10 etc. In each case Memtest gave the same speed for the L1 and L2 cache, indicating these are drven by the CPU core speed, not the FSB. This means there is no intrinsic value in using a higher FSB for CPU, the only benefit comes if doing so allows you run the  memory faster! You might say the AMD64 FSB is the on die bus which connects the on die CPU core to the on die memory controller. Increasing the FSB just increases the bandwith beteen the core and memory controller, allowing you to benefit from using faster memory.
So  yes, you can achieve fantastic FSB's with this  chipset. I have managed to booted at 340!  But this didn't improve performance one jot as I had to use a huge memory devisor. But if I had PC5400 memory my system would really fly!
P.S. For some strange reason running my memory asynchronously allows it to be overlocked more. That's why I boot at 250.

  • MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 - can a raid be set up after a HD has info on it

Ok so my computers PS died the other day, no biggie but in the process of getting it back up I pulled the battery and reset my Bios.
My questions is, I used to have a Raid 1 set up now it's being shown as two hard drives, both with info on them. Can I just go back into the BIOS and set up the raid and go back to work?
Oh and at start up I still get the error 'no keyboard' but if I plug a ps2 in it's fine, then ones windows is up I unplug it and the usb key/mouse work fine. Any ideas on how to fix.

Where exactly are you trying to find this option in the bios? As Richard said make sure you enabled manual for CPU and Ram settings.
I know where I am looking.
User Config Mode --> [Manual] but there is only "Bottom of 32-bit" , "Read Preamble value" and " Async Latency value".

Please tell us exactly(!) what you changed in Cell Menu (core speed, HT, mem clock and so on), report your CPU model and stepping.
Did you clear cmos after(!) flashing 3.A mod?
After flash I remove my power cable for 1-2 mşnutes than press reset button. During post screen I enter bios to load failsafe defaults. After those steps I try to find what is good/bad with that bios.
Feel free to ask anything that can fix this problem.

No posts to your post either  LOL
Anyway - could be fans causing it - I had my Neo not booting until I disconnected a case fan from the mobo fan header output.
Try with just leaving the cpu fan (could also be this one of course) .

  • K8N Neo4 platinum lockup?

    K8N Neo4 platinum edition MS-7125
    AMD athlon 64
    4 Gig RAM
    WD 250 Gig SATA
    Win XP
No issues at all for the past 5 years, then about a week ago it suddenly locked up, so I tried a reboot. Since then, it will not reboot, no on-screen prompt at all. Can this be a hard drive issue? BIOS? My D-Bracket now indicates, reading left to right:
    1 - orange
    2 - red
    3 - red
    4 - orange
Any ideas, experience with this issue? What is my next troubleshooting step?

Should I simply just press the white, round "clear CMOS" button on the MB or do the following?:
    2) Clear CMOS settings by removing battery
DO NOT MOVE JBAT1(CMOS JUMPER) When Power is on
Or Power on with JBAT1 in Discharge position
    Edited From Syar2003 21-11-04 03:02 Thread 5 Short Beeps
    1) Disconnect the AC Lead from PSU .
    2) Push the power button to drain the capacitors
    3) Remove the battery for the cmos rom
    4) Move the CMOS jumper (JBat1) to the ClearData position, from it's original 1-2 position to 2-3
    5) Leave it as long as you want if your struggling with the build & it's getting late leave until tomorrow like this . Otherwise 5-10 minutres.
    6) Set the jumper back in "KeepData" position .
    7) Re Mount the battery .
    8) Connect AC to the PSU .
    9) Start the computer .
    10) When/if bios posts with cmos checksum error .. press [del] key and load optimized BIOS defaults + save + exit
    11)  let pc reboot, if you have any settings you want changing do them now. like hard disk boot order etc., Note: Also remember after removing the Battery the time date etc., will need resetting. If you forget to do this you may find it could invalidate your Windows activation, and require a telephone call.
Note: Checksum error reported means no valid user configuration stored

    Thanks.

Quote from: hansh on 27-September-05, 16:34:38
Hi, when you ask 10 people about the best method to flash BIOS, you will probably get 10 different answers
    Some observations:
    1. Flashing under Windows has become "normal procedure" for boards of most other manufacturers; (I will not use this method for my MSI boards, though, because of the negative opinion on it in this forum. If the comments are correct, then the only conclusion can be that MSI software engineers are at present not able to deliver a Window-based flashing program with which MSI-BIOSes can be flashed into MSI boards in a safe way. I'd rather not find out the exact reason for this  . I have used Windows-based flashing programs numerous times with boards from other manufacturers - Abit, Asus, Soltek, ECS, etc. without any problem).
    2. If the procedure as described by Syar really has significant advantages over "plain flashing", then it means that either the BIOSes are flaky, or the boards are instable. Such precautions have never been necessary and should not be necessary! I can only recommend - just to be on the safe side - that, while flashing, you dance around the computer, carrying two carrots, an onion and chanting "Flash! Flash! Flash!
    3. There is something to say for not flashing from a floppy. Floppies are the oldest part of nowadays computers and the medium is probably the least failsafe part ... Therefore I have reserved a small (100 MB) FAT32 partition on a HDD, BIOS files and most recent flashing program will be copied to that partition. I will start the PC with a W98SE bootflop, go to that partition and flash from there. I have used this method a great number of times over the years, I will never add any switch when running the program.
    Additional Info
    Regards
    Hans
    Hi hansh,
thanks for that. I'll boot with a Win98 bootCD (NTFS support included) and thinking about flashing with an Iomega USB pen drive (FAT32). Any comments here?
And, blazing storm, thanks again for your valuable reply.

  • BSOD's on my x64 K8N Neo4 Platinum based PC, Any ideas what's wrong? Help!

Over the past few month I've been getting BSOD's. There is no real pattern to their occurence and it's not something which is constantly happening (It happened around 5 times in the past 2 months), but I've really grown to hate them. You see, after getting one what has happened in the past is that when I go to restart my pc after getting a BSOD, I find I need to re-install my whole OS! What happens is that after booting (which oddly enough doesn't work well after a BSOD, It freezes on the boot screen and I need to restart several times), a black screen appears telling me that certain files in the C:Windows\ direcotory are corrupt or missing.
So the real problem is that the BSOD's cause me to re-install my whole OS. One will happen, then it will be ok, I turn the system on, log into windows, then it might happen again, after which I'll need to re-install. The files that go missing are always different too, and when I run scan-disk (after plugging in my main drive into another computer) it finds corrupt files and deletes them.
At first I thought it was Azureus (p2p client) which was causing the problems because it seemed to happen when I was runing that. I stopped using it, and the BSOD's still occured...sometimes randomly when browsing...etc. I figured that since files got deleted and corrpupted, it must be a problem withthe Hard Drive....So I bought a new one, and I've still had the BSOD error (although files haven't been deleted yet).
So yeah, I really need to solve this problem as it is taking away from my productivity and causing me to re-install far too often. I will post the BSOD info as well as my system info below (and a screen shot):

I looked that up on the net, and it seems the first part seems to indicate, or at least COULD indicate overheating. I checked CPU and System temps and they seem acceptable.
I am running Windows XP x64 Edition with the following hardware (please note that all of the hardware drivers I'm using are written for x64, MSI is so good:)). I have had this PC before it started having these problems, it could be related to using x64 I guess, but the error doesn't show that does it?

Also in another bad turn of events, my northbridge fan seems to be on its way out of this world (this just happned so I don't think its related to the BSOD). I haven't been able to find a replacement, and since its not spinning very fast, and sometimes stops...It's causing the heatsink to get quite hot. I need to get a new one, and I can't find them anywhere...I wonder if thats covered under warranty... I looked into getting a different heatsink, but my Graphics card is so colse to this heatsink, that theres no room for a bigger one at all.
Do you think this problem is motherboard related, I cannot understand what the technical info the BSOD gives me means, can anybody understand it? I don't think its my HD's, or Ram, or CPU...could it be a motherboard problem? And if so, its under 1 year old, can I get an RMA?
Thanks for the help in advance.

At one time I had a weak 450w psu that had only 18a on the 12v rail.  When I overclocked my cpu and gpu, I was getting bsod's every once in a while and couldnt figure it out until I read a similar post like yours on this forum.  I decided to upgrade my psu and havent had that problem since.
Power supplies can be deceiving.  I now have a 480w psu but its has 30a on the 12v rail.  So what we need to know is the ratings of your psu (see my sig) just to see if your psu is the culprit.  Just my 2 cents.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum, how to move MBR to sata (make it drive #1)?

I am not sure I am phrasing the question correctly, so bear with me. I have a K8N Neo4 platinum with the SiI3114 controller and sata ports 4-8 (I believe its what they are calling PCB 1.x) with bios v1.D. I moved the board to another box and installed winXP on it. I was running it with IDE hard drives. Everything was working great but the OS was running really slow so I bought a SATA 300 mb/s drive and pluged it into SATA1 (I read about using ports 3 and 4 for raid but I do not want to use the NVraid at all, it is disabled). Then I proceeded to reinstall win XP. In the setup, I deleted the original C partiton and created one on the sata drive and rebooted so that there would be no "C" drive confusion by the winxp setup (have had that problem before and this keeps it from happening). Went through the setup and the sata was correctly reported as "C". Told windows to install itself there but it told me that it needed to write to MBR on the old c drive but that, since I had deleted the partiton, it couldn't and had to format it. So I knew that something was wrong.
So I rebooted and disabled the ide bus that contained the old IDE drive and just left the CD ide bus enabled. WinXP installed fine with no complaints. Then it rebooted and I re-enabled the ide bus in the bios. It wouldn't boot into the partiton I just installed winxp on! To get it to boot, I had to use F11 (the bios boot menu) and select the sata drive. Went through the whole setup winXP thing and rebooted. Same problem, it wouldn't boot the sata drive. :(
As long as that ide bus with the old ide drive is enabled, it won't boot the sata drive! I have rearranged the boot order on the bios every way possible. I opened up the box and moved that ide chain with the old ide drive to the ide2 port and put the dvd drive on ide1. I made the old drive slave and the prior slave master. That didn't fix it either. How do I tell this motherboard that the 1st drive is the sata drive? How do I tell it the MBR should be there not on the old ide drive? How do I fix this? Thanks!

Thank you for your replies! Hans, thank you I will give it a go again doing full formats all the way. I usually use the full format when installing winXP but I did things in a different order than you instructed so I will definately try it.
Aicjofs, thank you, There are 3 hard drives in this system currently. There is the ide hard drive that used to be the "c" drive (a western digital 160gb ata133 7200rpm 8mb cache) and a second ide hard drive that is an extended partition with 1 logical drive with data on it (western digital 300gb ata133 7200rpm 8mb cache). Then there is a sata hard drive in sata1 port with 2 partitions one primary and one extended. The extended partion does have data on it as I moved stuff there after I got winXP up the 2nd time (western digital 250gb sata II 7200rpm 16mg cache).  Right now, I have the ide drive with data on it as ide2 master and the old "c" drive as ide2 slave and it is unformatted and contains no partion information (I deleted the partition  after I installed the SATA drive and installed winXP). XP won't boot. What happens is that, if I take the winxp cd out, it gives me a "no system" error. If I leave the WinXP cd in it boots that disk. However, if I use "f11" and choose to boot the sata drive, winxp comes up just fine. If I disable the ide bus with the two ide hard drives, it boots winxp just fine.
Edit: bios is v1.D. It feels like this mobo is telling windows setup that the master ide drive is the first disk and to ignore everything else. It feels like if I can just tell the mobo that the sata drive is the first disk then everything will work . It is late night where I am now, and I've been fighting with this since the afternoon so I might have to goto sleep but I will be back at it tomorrow and will go though what Hans instructed. If anyone has any otehr ideas, I'd really appreciate that as well.

  • XP64bit installation halts, K8N Neo4 Platinum - No SATA drives found?

    My setup:
    Athlon 64 3500+
    K8N Neo4 Platinum
    2GB OCZ 3200 Premier
    2) WD Sata 80GB HD's (for RAID 0)
    Nvidia 6800GT Extreme VGA
I was recently lucky enough to get my hands on a real Windows XP Pro64bit Extended Edition. I gathered quite a few 64bit drivers which claim to do the job (so they say.)
However I ran into a very strange issue during installation.
My main concern was getting RAID drivers to utilize after pressing F6 during the Windows install. Unfortunately I could not find Nvidia drivers so I went with the Silicon Image Sil3114 64bit drivers I got from their website. Copied them to a disk and thought I was ready to rock N roll. I have updated all BIOS to latest versions as of the date of this post.
Now I went into the RAID BIOS and setup my RAID 0 Array and both SATA drives are shown. All went well in this dept.
I began my installtion of XP64 and pressed F6 to install the RAID drivers. Popped the floppy in and the driver files were copied successfully.
I continued on to the point where you are prompted to setup Windows XP and it searches for any previous installs.
I continue to where I should get the dislmaimer and to press F8, however the install halts and say no hard drives were found. Setup cannot continue.
Any ideas as to why my drives are not being detected during installation? They show up fine under the RAID setup BIOS.
Any info or thoughts is truly appreciated.

You need to make your own floppy for the nvidia 64 ide drivers.
How to install Windows on SATA using F6 to load Drivers
Follow item 1 Obviously usinfg the Neo4 64bit unified driver pack Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
