K8N Neo4 Platinum - Is It Dead? ***PROBLEM SOLVED***

I recently upgraded my system and moved most of the old components into a different case, including the K8N, CPU, memory and PSU.  The only thing that is changing is the hard drive.  When I power on the computer the D-Bracket indicates it is hanging at memory initialization.  I have OCZ PC3200 platinum edition 2gb dual channel kit installed.  I tried to boot with one stick installed in each slot and it still hangs at the same place.  I fear I shorted or damaged the MB somehow...  Any ideas?
Thanks,
Kurt

I know it sounds grazy... but unplug computer from wall socket for 10 seconds (cut power completely)
and try again.
You thank me later...
I wish it were true...no dice.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum power on/off problem

    Hi all.
I just got a K8N Neo4 Platinum, and have a problem with switching it on and off.
When I switch on the mains to the PC PS(before turning the PC on), the fans start turning, and I hear disks spinning up. The PC power LED is off, but the HD LED is on. There is no picture on the monitor.
If I then switch the PC on, it boots normal, power LED is on, and the HD LED is normal. The PC is working absolutely normal, with winXP.
But when I turn the PC off again, the fans remain on, power LED goes off, HD LED on. And I can't switch the PC on again, till I have toggled the mains supply.
I have tried measuring what comes on the power connector. It looks like there is still 12V when the PC is supposed to be switched off. Don't know if that is right.
There is also 5VSB and PWR OK, but I think they are supposed to be there.
I hope I have been able to explain the problem in understandable english.

That the comp turn itself on when the different front side connectors etc isnt in, i dont think that's a problem with ur PSU.
Same thing happend to me when i forgot to plug them in a couple of days ago. I got a Tagan 480W, and its flawless!
Have u ever considered unplugging everything, and doing it from the beginning? ......
I have tried from the beginning many times, but it's always failing.
BUT..... Today I got a new K8N Neo4 Platinum from a vendor next door to where I work, and it works perfectly
I had a suspicion that the motherboard was causing the fail, but couldn't be sure without trying a new one. Now the first one is going back to the shop where I bought it.
Thanks to all for all the suggestions you have come up with.

  • Firewire/1394 devices are not auto-detected with k8n neo4 platinum

I am unable to detect firewire/1394 devices to my PC through my K8N Neo4 Platinum. That is, I plug in the device through the firewire port and windows doesn't detect that a device has been plugged in.
    I have tried:
-2 firewire devices, both are Canon digital camcorders (ZR10 and ZR25MC)
    -2 different firewire cables
-reinstalling windows, got all windows updates except
(Microsoft Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider Package: x86 (KB909520))
    -patch from microsoft, discussed here
    (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=81749.0)
-both firewire devices using both cables connect just fine to a test computer
-both my computer and the test computer have Windows XP Pro SP2
Windows doesn't make the noise "bah-dum" that it has detected a device, nor does it display the dialog that gives me options of what programs to use. Once in a while, if I leave it connected for a while and come back, windows will eventually find it...or windows might bog down and get really slow. It speeds up again instantly once I unplug the firewire device. Strange, I know. Also there are NO conflicts in device manager.
    Could it be?:
    -bios misconfiguration
-need to use an older chipset driver (i am using most recent from nvidia.com)
-onboard audio or front audio needs to be disabled
-the k8n neo4 platinum simply has connection problems with some firewire devices
    (i hope not)
    Bob

    Built2Last: (good questions!)
I tried your suggestion by removing PCI cards and made FURTHER progress. I found out that my firewire card, the Syba NEC1394-P3, has some compatibility issues with my other PCI cards. I found this out because:
    1. it worked fine after I placed it in a non-comm (orange) slot and removed my soundcard (X-Fi) and Belkin wireless modem, and
    2. a tech support representative from Syba told me that that particular firewire card has compatibility issues
    Quote
Also, SD-NEC-4F is our older model firewire card.
Our new firewire card (SD-PCI-4F) is using VIA VT6306 chipset and no customer complain about any installation issue so far.
If the SD-NEC-4F still giving you trouble, I'll suggest you to return it and exchange for the SD-PCI-4F firewire card.
At least he is honest and wants to help, so I remain impartial towards Syba.
So I figured out the firewire card, but not the onboard firewire. Ok, but check this out! When the Syba card was working, I could plug in BOTH the external hard drive AND either of the Canon camcorders to the Syba firewire card. Windows all three devices just fine. Again, the onboard firewire would ONLY detect JUST the external hard drive, but would not detect either of the Canon camcorders. It seems as though the ball again is knocked back into MSI's court on this issue. Any ideas?
    syar2003:
As for drivers, I checked for drivers for: onboard firewire, add-in firewire card, and Canon camcorders.
-I cannot find where there is an MSI firewire driver for my onboard firewire port. I originally guess that it was part of my chipset driver installer, but the README doesn't say anything about it. It is also not an additional download on MSI's website. But since it detects an external hard drive I figure I must already have it.
-The add-in firewire card does not have drivers. I repeat, they do not exist. The manual and Syba's website both state that drivers for the card are included all versions of Windows back to Windows 98.
-Canon's website has a driver/software download page but it also appears that drivers do not exist for the Canon camcorders.
Yes the camcorder is set to VCR mode.
Yes the IEEE1394 is correctly installed, since external hard drive connects okay.
I tried two DV cables and both are connected fine.
The camcorders do not support USB as far as I can see, and if they do, I'm not using it.

  • Considering the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum

    Hello,
I'm currently deciding whether or not to get the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, and I just have a few questions.
    1) How beginner friendly is it?
    2) Does it take a lot of work to make it run or can you just plug everything up and the system will run fast and stable?
    3) How stable is this board? I've heard that MSI boards were unstable, so how stable is this specific board?
    4) I know this board is good at gaming, but how about office work like using Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.?
    5) I plan to keep this system for at least four years, will this motherboard give a lot of trouble? And how reliable is it?
    5) Can ya'll share your experiences with MSI?
    Thanks for any help.

Is the MSI website http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum/SLI&class=mb where MSI names the board as "K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI" incorrect?  It wouldn't be the first time a typographical error occurred.
If not then the OP may simply have not had enough room to enter a complete description.
No it is not incorrect, I am staring at the box mine came in.  It says Platinum Edition-K8N Neo4/SLI, there is also a the non platinum version K8N Neo4/SLI and the non-SLI K8N Neo 4
    anyway,
    Quote
Maybe I'll get the Platinum SLI edition instead so that I can upgrade later to SLI without having to buy a new card. If I do get the SLI I'll use a single card for now and put in the second card later when it's needed. Does the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI have any problems with running a single video card in non-SLI mode? And I've noticed that the SLI edition doesn't have a x1 PCIe or x4 PCIe slot, is sacraficing these two slots (as well as a regular PCI slot) worth it for SLI capabilities?
to answer that question, no it does not have problems running a single card in non SLI mode.  It runs like a champ.  I pernonally would not use the extra PCI slots, so to me SLI outweighs scarificing the extra PICe slots.

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum cold boot problem with 165 opteron?

I have this board and have a cold boot problem with my opteron. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Its starting to get very anooying.
    K8N NEO4 Platinum
    165 opty dual core
    2X1GB Ballistix PC4000
    160GB sata2
    7800GTX
    X-Fi platinum
    600 watt seasonic PSU

Well I am running them at the rated speed of 250 and the rated timings of 3-4-4-10 on the rated 2.8 volts. Ballistix have been known to die quickly when you throw to many volts at them for some reason. I dont get the cold boot problem with the OCZ. Once I finally get it to boot with the Ballistix it works just fine but the next morning I play hell to get it to boot again. I dont even get the main screen to let me get into bios. It just stays black. I have done all kinds of stress testing and ran memtest with no problems. I am really at a loss here.

  • Problem replacing K8n Neo4 Platinum

Hello everybody, this is my first post here, I am a new member from Italy.
    I have this problem:
I own a K8n Neo4 Platinum and when I changed the VGA from Nvidia 6600 GT to 8600 GTS the Mobo doesn't post anymore.. The usb diagnostig bracket says it's a memory problem but when I've put my memory banks on a different PC, they work just fine.
I think the problem was caused by the little space that I had between the VGA and the chipset cooler (Zalman passive);when I installed the VGA I damaged the chipset. Taking a closer look at it I noticed that 1 edge is damaged. I also substituted the Power suplly but the result is always the same.
So I decided to replace the mobo but I don't want to reinstall windows. Finding my same mobo is impossible here in Europe. I only found the K8n Neo4-F.
My question is the following :
-Does this Mobo use the same drivers that were installed on my HD? (latest driver downloaded  from Nvidia version 6.86)
-Will I have problems with Windows ?

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra and 4 GB SDRAM DDR 400 Problem

I have the K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra and 4 1GB sticks of Corsair ValueSelect DDR 400 (PC 3200), model VS1GB400C3, filling all four slots. The BIOS recognizes about 2.88 GB of total memory. The MSI manual states:
    Quote
Due to the South Bridge resource deployment, the system density
will only be detected up to 3+GB (not full 4GB) when each
DIMM is installed with an 1GB memory module.
I'm not sure what this means. Does it mean that I'm "wasting" my SDRAM, that not all of it is used, or does it mean that all of it will be used and the BIOS just reports a smaller number?

    Hi.
You seems not familiar with X86....
As you should know, Windows XP and most OS are 32 bits. That mean that every memory pointer is 32 bits, thus allowing to address 4Gb of memory.
    BUT
In most OS, there is a difference between the kernel and the user. So, in most OS, the memory is divided in two 2Gb block (no matter how many Gb of Ram you really have!). The first one is for the OS, the 2nd for the user program.
So, If you have for example 3Gb of ram, in the best case, you have 1gb for system and 2Gb for user program.
To allow more Ram to fonction, PAE (Physical Address Extension) was made. Instead of 32, you got 36 bits for you pointers.
But as X86-32 CPUs can't handle more than 32 bits, a reserved area was made within 4Gb to allow Memory to be copied from the area the program want to read.
    Exemple:
You got a server with 8Gb of ram. In windows, you only see 3.5+512Mb PAE.
If a program need to address memory in the 7-7.5 Range for example, the chipset copy the data from the 7-7.5 range to the 3.5-4 range in order to allow the CPU to get access: that's VERY slow.
So, in short: You can't have and don't need 4Gb of ram on 32bits OS.
(And there's even more place occupied by every card (AGP, PCI, PCI-e)....)
That's why XP64 is so interresting for programmers who needs lots of ram (Database....). When used with a chipset who know how to deal with lots of ram (I don't know if NForce4 can do it but I doubt it), you can load in memory a 4Gb Database.
But In all case, the bios should say 3.5Gb, not 2 and so on. You must have a problem with one of your stick. My guess is that they are all double sided and that you should slow down the memory to 333MHz.
(Or better: Send back 2x1Gb stick and get 2x512 SINGLE SIDED stick, unless you REALLY NEED 1.5Gb for your system !)

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum problems

I have one questions and one problem for you all:
Why do i have to disable CPU-spread spectrum to get the right PCI-clock ( if you believe ntune ) ?
    Strange things happen??:
I have Seti@Home ( a very CPU-intensive application ) as my screen saver. I was supprised to see that my new computer ( Athlon 3800+, 1GB ram ) seems to be slower than my old AtlonXP 1700+! What was happening here? My investigations result was: Whenever the screensaver is active the cpu is clocked down. I come to this conclusion because first the computer is really slow and second the cpu-temperature was almost on idle levels ( measured with ntune ). When i disable the screensaver at all and let seti run as normal application everything is as expected. Well either this is WindowsXp SP2 or the bios i would say - before anyone has to ask: Cool'n Quite is disabled in bios. Anyone else has the same effekt?
    Thanks for any reply.
    My System in detail:
    WindowsXP SP2 with uptodate drivers
    MSI K8n Neo4 Platinum motherboard
    AMD Athlon 3800+
    1GB ram Corsair Twinx1024 XMS 3200XL ( 2x512MB ) in Dimm slot 3,4
Asus GeForce 6800 GT graphic card
    Creative Audigy Player sound card

    WinTV PCI

Quote from: Assaf on 13-April-05, 04:39:15
Spread spectrum means the frequency is modulated (not constant) - so it will be measured differantly.
I don't see this as an issue, but why do you need it enabled anyway ?
The frequency thing is strange since Cool'n Quiet is disabled, maybe you have Core Center running and doing something to the frequency ?
    Thanks for the reply.
Naturally i don't need the spread spectrum, but it was enabled by default and i was curious.
No, core center ( or something similar ) isn't running. Atm i don't want to change any frequencies, i just want to build it as stable as possible ( and fast, naturally ).   And one other thing: seti is running quite well - it needs 2 to 2.5 hours to process a seti-work-unit - when the computer is running normal, but it slows down to about 1/3 of its speed when seti is running as screensaver, it needs 6 hours and more to complete one seti-work-unit. Isn't that exactly what Cool'nQuiet is doing ( among other things ) : reducing the clock speed to one third? :-(
Btw. in bios the ACPI Standby State is set to S1 ( i think that may be of interest ). I am running bios version 1.2
Well, atm i have disabled ( in windows )  any power management ( and screensavers ) and the computer doesn't throttle down the processor any more.
Well, someone has any idea how i can find out what is the problem with my computer?
Thanks in advance for any reply.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI Sound Problem

I've recently build a system using the new K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI nForce4 board, which has the Creative SoundBlaster Live! 24bit onboard. The problem being the volume of the sound output (analogue) is extremely low. All volume controls in Windows are all set to full volume, but the sound output is still very very low. I consider myself pretty good with computers but with this problem I'm stumpted. Anybody else had this problem? Any insite would be very appricated.
    Various info:
With my old SoundBlaster Live! Value the sound is fine
    System Specs:
    K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI
    Athlon64 3500 Winchester
    1gb PC3200 (Crucial ValueSelect RAM)
    nVidia GeForce 6800 256mb
    WindowsXP Professional w/ SP2
    Any help will be appreciated

Ive been wanting to set up a new system based of this same motherboard, but all the power supplies Ive found so far have either been brands Im not familiar enough with or I havent been able to find a definitive answer on if the power supply supports that -5V pin(usually both, unfortunately). Can anyone point me in the right direction for a PSU under US$100? Any suggestions of power supplies anyone has had success with will also be greatly appreciated.
Ive spent about the past three days searching and have finally reached my wits end.
    Second edit:
I double checked the diamond forum link (it gave a link not found page the first time), I did get to see what was posted there, but since most online retailers and manufacturer websites dont give the best view of the main connector, thats not alot of help. The only websites Im comfortable ordering from also do not evne carry the suggested power supplies, or any other unit by those manufacturer.
    FINAL Edit (I promise...kinda):
I double checked on NewEgg (and then double checked FrozenCPU.com), and I found one from OCZ that doesnt totally blow my goal of USD100 or less out of the water. Lists a -5v supply, and is 24 pin for the motherboard:
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-104-155&depa=1
Same thing for 129.99 on FCPU, which is where Ill be ordering the power supply from.
I dont have any real need for the onboard adjustment dials of the more expensive series, and I really like the modular PSU design, not to mention the blue color scheme will work well in my blue-illuminated case.
Now, are there any other hurdles I need to be aware of?

Beacuse I'm gonna install Xp on it. save and exit the bios, the post(?) screen shows up with sume info, and at the button i can choose: Press F1 to continue or press DEL to enter setup.
I press contunie and a blac screen show up and it said hit ctrl+s to enter raid meny, or something like that, press just enter, the a long list is been gone threw, ends up with : press any key to boot from cd,
i press a Key and the xp cd just start and gets to: controlling the hardware of the computer ( first thing the swedish install cd does). And after seeing that line and three dotes after it for about 5 seconds, it just dissapear and the screen remains black, the cd rom is loading, but no more...
anyone of u know what the problem is?
    Best regards
    // Swedo

Seems like i am having the same problem on My K8N Neo4 Platinum, actually i built 3 identical rigs.  And i am having the same problem as above.  What i did to get around the problem was connect My Sata II hard drives to the orange slots on the mobo, and run them as raid0 and everything works, i dont know why i can run it on the purple slots without raid.
