K8N NEO4 Platinum the boat anchor from hell!

I just asembled the following:
MSI-7100-030 K8N NEO4 PlatinUm SLI
Geoforce 6800 PCIE
2 Gig DDR400
2x200Gb WD SATAII drive
2x80GB  Seagfate SATA drives
2x80GB  Wd IDE drives
I get terrible performance.
Takes One hour to copy a 6Gig file to another drive or folder.
Multi tasking is almos nonexixstant.
I got this board as a white box [oem].
No software or manuals.
So I Dl'd the system & raid drivers from MSI.
As i did not run well I then got updated drivers form Nvidia & from Silicone Image.
No better.
I ran a benchmark program (Passmark Perfomance Test) and was very unhappy.
Has anyone had similiar issues?
Would anyone download a copy of this software from:
http://www.passmark.com/download/pt_download.htm.
Please run the "Run All test Sequentially" icon [second from end of tolbar].
Save & email me the results at [email protected]
Should take no more than 5 minutes.
Please specify your system build for comparison.
Thanks & happy newyear!

selkov,
you don't appear to have a CPU or PSU in your system, can you tell us what they are please?

      hi.
the line where 1394 was is now empty , i try everything i flash the bios and stuff
    no luck for me???
it look like the 1394 onboard conroller is dead?

A thread here , from when 1.56 appeared:
MSI K8N Neo Plat Beta Bios 1.56
    and when 1.55 appeared:
New Bios For MSI K8N Neo Platinum [ 1.55]
Seems to me that the 1.5x series were focused on chipset timings and ram .
Another thing is that i can boot from a usb pen with this one .(never got it to work with others) .
Beta bioses don't come with a changelog , they leak out . So any complete

  • How are some guys running an Athlon 3800+ X2 chip on the K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI?

I see many people running an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2 Dual Core proccessor on a K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI board, but mine dosen't work.  I don't get any signal to my monitor (don't know if this is the cause).  MSI says the 3800+X2 dosen't support the SLI board, but many people got it to work.  Any one know how?

Mine working fine, but on cold boot, sometime it hang on me. I have changed 3 PSU to get it stable, from Coolermaster 450W, Be Quiet 520W to Silverstone 650W, ambient 25C, CPU 30C, Proc 37C.
Bios 3.7 the one they are still testing.
Have you check you PSU rails volt., disable CnQ,....
So far stable, multiple programs at once with no significant drop in responseness & speed,  Half Life 2, P2P downloading x2, IE x 3, encode DVD at the same time.

  • X2 3800+ (E6) support for the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI

    Hi everyone:
I have decided to purchase the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI (MS-7100-020) and I ready placed the order.  However, I wonder if it supports the AMD X2 3800+ (E6 Version) CPU?  The reason I asked the question because I found the following table from the Taiwan MSI web site which shows that X2 3800+ E6 is undertesting.
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=641&kind=1
    Thank you for any replies.

Mine worked, ran for 2 weeks already at stock, tried & ran to 2.2GHz on stock HSF with no problem.
    Using X2 3800+ E6, MSI K8N PLI Platinum mobo, 3.7 bios & Inno3D 7800GTX single latest nvidia 78 drivers, 2x512MB DDR400 CL2.5 Kingston Ram, Hitachi T7K250 Sata 250GB HDD, NEC ND-3530A Benq 1640, , Silverstone Zeus 650W PSU
At first I have this concern too, but tried it anyway.

  • Lan issues with the K8N NEO4 Platinum NF4U 939 Motherboard

    New K8N NEO4 Platinum NF4U 939 Motherboard.
After three or four hours the connection started to get unstable.  I am a high end gamer and any net slowdown I see and feel.
Using my "Ping Plotter" program i saw the issue.  The first hop to my router was going from 0 to 47ms.  On all of the other conputers on this network hop one stays at 0.
In looking at the over all ping to my game server I noted that when hop 0 went to 47 it messed up all of the other hops and made the connection to my game server unstable.
The odd thing is I bypassed the onboard nic's and installed a PCI nic and it did the same thing.
I got with MSI and they had ne updare the NVIDA drivers.  This lowered the swing to 0-17.  I removed the PCI lan and am now back with the onboard nic.  I have replaced the DSL modem, cable and removed the dlink and the issue is still the same.
This is my first computer with XP and at this point I do not know if this is an XP issue or a driver issue.
In installing a pci nic some of the network control is still done on the motherboard so that does not rule out a motherboard/chipset driver issue.
I have set up a web site that shows screen shots of the ping plotter.  Please take the time to look at them and tell me what you think.

    Hello !!
Please give more information about your system specs.
But i would try the following:
Download the latest nforce and vga drivers from nvidia ( if you are using nv VGA card ? ). Google for "driver cleaner" and download it.
Restart system and press F8 to enter safe mode. Now uninstall all nvidia drivers(chipset & VGA), and run Driver Cleaner after it. Select the nvidia tabs and remove them....
Now reboot, when prompted to install new drivers cancel this process. And start nvidia chipset driver setup, install all drivers but do not install the IDE driver from nvidia, you will be prompted for this.In first attempt you should not install nvidia firewall. Restart and install VGA drivers. Now test again your network connection. I hope it helps....

  • Considering the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum

    Hello,
I'm currently deciding whether or not to get the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, and I just have a few questions.
    1) How beginner friendly is it?
    2) Does it take a lot of work to make it run or can you just plug everything up and the system will run fast and stable?
    3) How stable is this board? I've heard that MSI boards were unstable, so how stable is this specific board?
    4) I know this board is good at gaming, but how about office work like using Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.?
    5) I plan to keep this system for at least four years, will this motherboard give a lot of trouble? And how reliable is it?
    5) Can ya'll share your experiences with MSI?
    Thanks for any help.

Is the MSI website http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum/SLI&class=mb where MSI names the board as "K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI" incorrect?  It wouldn't be the first time a typographical error occurred.
If not then the OP may simply have not had enough room to enter a complete description.
No it is not incorrect, I am staring at the box mine came in.  It says Platinum Edition-K8N Neo4/SLI, there is also a the non platinum version K8N Neo4/SLI and the non-SLI K8N Neo 4
    anyway,

Maybe I'll get the Platinum SLI edition instead so that I can upgrade later to SLI without having to buy a new card. If I do get the SLI I'll use a single card for now and put in the second card later when it's needed. Does the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI have any problems with running a single video card in non-SLI mode? And I've noticed that the SLI edition doesn't have a x1 PCIe or x4 PCIe slot, is sacraficing these two slots (as well as a regular PCI slot) worth it for SLI capabilities?
to answer that question, no it does not have problems running a single card in non SLI mode.  It runs like a champ.  I pernonally would not use the extra PCI slots, so to me SLI outweighs scarificing the extra PICe slots.

The system now displaces a new Bios boot screen and the boot up number is now 5.2.16.
XP all up to date and LAN drivers up to date.
I am seeing a saw tooth ping to my WestTel DSL modem. On all of the other PCs here on my LAN the first hop is always 0ms.  After updating the mother board bios and turning on the LAN memory I still get 0ms to 7 or 10 ms.
You can see more detals at http://webviper.com/LanIssues.htm
Any Ideas please email me at [email protected]

Sorry the system did not email me.....
I did update the BIOS and I used the liveupdate.  I also updated the NVIDA drivers with a link that MSI sent me.  This did help things out a lot but the issue is still there.  I have updated the web page with more info and pics.  I have disabled the Xp firewall and have hooked the pc up to the westtell dsl modem.
After a reboot things run fine for about three hours...  Then it starts and get worse as time goes on.  It is not a heat issue as my new case has 10 fans and the read out of the CPU is good!   34C

I've tried triders from nvidia (forceware stuff) and got latest amd driver + msi live update.

  • Can I put an old 20GB IDE HD into the K8N NEO4 Platinum Board ?

I was just wondering if you can install a old Maxtor 20Gb IDE hard drive into a brand new system built around the K8N NEO4 Platinum (MS-7125) and used it in conjunction with a brand new Maxtor Diamondmax 10 SATA150 80Gb hard drive, for a total hard drive space of 100Gb ?
if it possible for new sata and old ide hard drives to co-exists in the same system ?

    Quote from: syar2003 on 23-January-06, 05:00:53
Yes , you can do that .
Only advise is to put the old udma66 disk on it's own ide cable .
You would want to install th OS on the sata drive , make sure not to have the ide disk connected during install
or it will host the OS system files and become the system disk (default win installer choice to take the first drive it sees , and
ide is always prior to satas in bios).
Then after OS is all setup , shut down and connect the remaining disks .
So the procedure would be, to install the sata drive first, the optical drives in IDE secondary and when everythings done, the old 20Gb drive in the primary IDE, its that the way of it ?
what do you mean by "put the old udma66 disk on it's own ide cable" ?

  • RMA'ed K8N Neo4 Platinum board, no sound on the new board's output

    Hi Folks,
I just got back the replacement for the K8N Neo4 Platinum boad I sent in a month ago.  The good news -- my mirrored RAID array came back up and my WinXP/SP2 setup looks fine.  The bad news -- my front speaker output doesn't put out any sound.  My Amplified 2.1 speaker set was plugged into my older machine and working fine, and I just swapped the speaker cable into the green output plug on my MB, and no sounds comes out.  Sounds was working on the previous MB which I sent in for RMA, so the software on my HDD's should have been set correctly to generate sounds on the new MB.
First, any suggestions on how to get the sound outputs working?  Second, any pointers on how to diagnose what's going on?  Should I be seeing "Realtek '97" (or something like that) for the playback and recording devices, for instance?
Thanks in advance for the help!
    Clark

Couple of things come to mind.  Power on the system and head on' over to the bios.  Ensure the audio onboard is actually turned on...or if the board they sent you had it disabled.
Check the Device manager for any "!" in yellow next to anything in the audio dept. (windows control panel/system/hardware...yadda yadda....)  If the onboard audio is turned 'on' and windows is seeing it? You'll have a heading for AC '97 listed, and also under sound effects options in the control panel it should be listed.  If it's listed as working 'ok'?  I seem to remember a set of jumpers on the motherboard for audio output.  In the manual it's listing as follows:
"If you don't want to connect the front audio header, pins 5&6, 9&10 have to be jumpered in order to have signal output directed to the rear audio ports.  Otherwise the line-out connector on the back panel will not function"  That's out of my manual regarding JAUD1 connector.  And I have the Neo4 K8N board.
    Best of luck!

    Greetings,
Can anybody tell me if they have configured the Thermalright XP-120 heatsink with an MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum Mainboard. I intend on fitting the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU. I need to clarify if the heatsink/fan will impact on populating the DIMM slots, or any other aspect of configuration.

The hype was these boards would be available at the begining of December, and that, after some minor delays/setbacks.  I've been playing with parts ment for the NV4 based systems since the begining of December.   MSI used to send me test boards direct from Taiwan to debug and stress--hell, I couldn't even get them to answer emails let alone send a test board.

  • MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI sound needs -5V; newest Antec 550W has no -5V rail

I came within a whisker of ordering a non-returnable  3700 Venice, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI mobo and an upgraded Power Supply, Antec's newest 550W PS the TP2-550 EPS12V ($117).  This has dual 2x24pin 12V 19A rails and is touted as the new V2.0 EPS12V/ATX12v compatible power supply for high performance SLI systems.  By accident I came across a page at MSI for this mobo
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mai...ail.php?UID=641
At the end is this warning:  MSI Reminds You...
    • For this model, you must use a Power Supply which has a -5V pin supply. Also, the users manual which I downloaded on Pg 2-10 says the same thing
The above Antec PS specs do not  show a -5V rail, nor does an Enermax 600W I looked at.  The V2.0 specs for ATX12v which added 2x24pin 12V rails dropped -5V rail from the spec and it appears MSI is not conforming to the spec (See Antec response at end) None of the web sites selling these PS & mobos contain any warning.  I vaguely recall from a forum a while back it may have something to do with the Soundblaster system in the mobo.
    http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=22551 (click specifications)
Isn't this a major showstopper which is going to cause a lot of grief for those of us upgrading to SLI systems using this mobo and upgrading our PS to the newest & best power design?  We won't know the PS won't work until we build the system.
    Regards, Ron
    Antec reply to me:
    >>>>Thanks for the link. Since MSI's website does state the motherboard needs the -5v, the True550EPS12V will not work with this motherboard. The Standard (http://enhanceusa.com/documents/atx12v_v2.01.pdf) has removed the use for the -5v rail and it is no longer needed. MSI has not manufactured that motherboard to the Standard. Finding an ATX12V v2.0 power supply with the -5v might be hard to find. You should contact MSI for a compatibility list of power supplys that were tested to work with the K8N SLI Platinum.

Wow!!  syar2003 thanks for that post.  I've spend an hour going through it &  fasteddies links.  Now I are a power expert.  The dual rail argument is enough for me to go back to the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI with one of the single rail PS -5V units listed by fasteddie. The only question left now refers to computerpro3  recommendation on ultra power supplies for SLI
    >>I quite simply wouldn't dream of putting anything else in my machine. Keep in mind, this section is for 2x 6800 models, not the 6600's which most any good psu will handle (like Antec Neopower, ocz 520, etc). . Pc Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe SLI edition (refer to list)
    2. Zippy/Emacs 550-700w models
    3. OCZ 600w (personally I would get the pcp&c for the price, but it's been proven here, so I'll be fair...).
These are really high end, expensive and only 3-4 choices. Since I'm getting one 6800GT and eventually another & possibly eventually a 4800 X2, I was hoping the OCZ 520W would do it but computerpro3 says Powermaster 520 isn't good enough for SLI.  I found that there is an OCZ 600W ATX12 dual rail which surprisingly has a -5V rail needed for K8N Neo4 SLI Soundblaster.  Will this meet computerpro3's preference for a high end PS for SLI systems even though I'm losing the 1 rail advantage.  Maybe the 600 Watts just overwhelms the 1 rail/2 rail question.
Thanks again for the teriffic help
    Regards, Ron
Wondering what you settled on.  I got the Antec TP550 and it's flawless on the board.  I even have the older 20pin model which works perfectly (including sound).  If you really wanted what I would consider to be a top dog (pcpower and cooling), and find the -5v rail missing, all you have to do is place a phone order and request they add a -5v rail.  It's a minimal cost and a total solution for having everything.  Just my $0.02

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum random lock-ups and BSOD

I built a new PC about 3 months ago and from day 1 it has always locked up / frozen at random intervals. Sometimes it also BSOD's with a Machine Check Exception. Seems to lock up / freeze more often when have multifple windows open eg. Multiple IE running but really is random. I have replaced the Mobo and Ram but keep having the same issues. Seemed fine?
There isn't really be any difference between an IDE drive and a sata.
Except that the sata drive needs some drivers as your installing the os.
Check your ram timings in bios but likely it's your psu.
Which components are on which rail?
The ones that use the +12v are your cpu, cdrom, dvdrom and graphics card.
Try disconnecting both roms and see if it improves things?
