K8N-PLATINUM NF4U SLI and PSU Question

Hi
I have read a lot in these forums about the issues arose with the K8N-PLATINUM NF4U SLI  board and the PSUs most of the users have.
Because I am going to buy the specific board i would like your opinion about the SilentPurePower 560W PSu of ThermalTake.
It gives 22A on 12V trail and it comes with a 20 to 24 pin adapter for Server motherboards use.
In addition I am going to use 2 sata Hds as raid and 2 DVD drives( one of them DVD-R) and the SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Zs.(Of course the onboard  soundcard will be disabled).
Do you think that the PSU will be adequate?
Thanks for your help

Thanks for your reply blazing storm but  many people here talk all about a "safe minimum of 24A on the 12V trail".
But if i sum up all my power requirements( dvds , processor:AMD 64 3500+ , HDDs etc) i come up with 18 or 19A.
After all the MSI itself suggest for it's K8n Platinum NF4U SLI at least 450W and greater than 18A on 12V trail so I suppose that it wiil be ok.
Maybe 24A it is proper for future upgrades.

  • K8N Diamond Plus, SLI and Creative X-Fi cards, anyone running similar?

    Hi there!
I've got an ASUS A8N32-SLI board and my X-Fi card does not work with it, nor does it for many other people with similar setups.
    See here:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=31426
    and here:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=26289
I get crackling and popping noises when running most games, e.g. BF2, Fear, FarCry.  When my 2x7800GTX's are in SLI mode it crackles loads, e.g. start far cry, click options, and listen.  When i disable SLI mode it crackles less, but it still crackles.  Many others encounter similar issues with their systems that are not identical but the symptoms are similar - high load = crackling/popping.
    My question is:
Is anyone here sucessfully running any X-Fi card (music, fatality, elite pro, etc) with 2x video cards and NO crackling/popping in BF2, FEAR and FarCry?
I've already had a replacement X-Fi card from creative which their tech guy said "should" fix it, lol, I'm wondering wether to replace my A8N32-SLI with an K8N Diamond Plus to fix the problem.  Besides, the MSI board has better PCI slot location and works with nTune too unlike the ASUS board.

    What's going on guys.
I hate to see peep's having soooo many prob's and it sucks major BALLZ. The reason why I'm reposting is that I encountered a new issue. Not with my rig, but a friend's.
We pretty much have the same setup. Differences are he's using 2GB of Corsair DDR400 (which is picking up as DDR333 as well), different branded video cards (I'm running two EVGA 7800GT's in SLi, he's running two BFG 7800GT's in SLi), XFi Platinum (me, Fatality Edition) and he's got a dedicated ITE RAID PCI card for his RAID from his previous rig. Configured his BIOS pretty much the same way I have it running (he wanted to Overclock his AMD x2 4400+ to 2.6 GHz), but when it came to installing Windows we kept getting BSOD's during installation. Looked over things numerous times and it didn't make sense. We resetted the BIOS to default settings and Windows went through without a hitch. We tried OC'ing it one more time and Windows was fine. But, when he installed and ran Quake 4, either Windows or the game would just lock up. He booted back into the BIOS and put the CPU back at stock frequency of 2.2 GHz. Game ran flawlessly afterwards. That points at the processor. The only differences were we both have different stock fans and his CPU was manufactured in July '05. Mine in Sept '05. His rig also reports the infamous "Phantom" PCI modem as well.
Quake 4 is the only game he's got installed so far, but he reports everything is set to their highest qualities, including resolution. He said it runs great with no anomalies. He's going to install Dawn of War and Winter Assault later I know.
Me? I haven't run into any issues with any games either, including F.E.A.R. as Hydrasworld asked. Both of our sound cards are in the Communication PCI Slot of the motherboard. My take on the OC issue is since we're using different proc's from different wafers, maybe my chip had revisions in September that the July proc my friend has didn't. Also, his heatsink has one less copper pipe I noticed. I'll still drop by for help. Good luck to you all and the only other thing I can add is try using the latest drivers for each piece of hardware you've got.
    LPB
P.S. If you can and you purchased a retail version of the processor, on one of the sides of the carton insert for the processor, a date should be printed. Maybe that can explain some issues. Once more, my proc was manufactured September 15th, 2005.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat power and bios question

    I have a K8N Neo2 Plat. I use a UltraProducts 500W xconnect PSU and a BFG 6800 GT OC.
A couple weeks ago the 6800 died. I contacted BFG and they sent me a new one.
The new one died the same way after a week. They said to check the power levels on the +12 rail.
In windows using softare tests it reports 13.58
in the bios it reports 12.22
both are over the allowed variance.
Ultra products told me to check with my motherboard manufacturer to see if there was a BIOS setting that would let me set the power on the +12V rail. Is that possible?
Is that something my K8N Neo2 Plat can do?

No, you cannot lower the 12V-rail by a bios setting. I really don't see what they mean by that.
Your motherboard does, however, regulate the power that comes from the power supply. Within certain margins it can lower the voltage and keep it steady. Your videocard can do the same. Now, depending on the tolerance (quality) of your hardware, you can vary on those margins. But on any piece of hardware, there is a point on which it cannot correct/lower a voltage that is too high. It then simply shuts down or dies.
To my opinion, the PSU-maker gave you a very funny piece of advice. What he actually says is that their psu may give too high a voltage (I talk about the 13+ now), but your hardware should correct this. That's not the way it works: they should make psu's that give 12V where it should. So, I'd demand a replacement. But, before you do: use a multimeter to measure the 12V-rail. You cannot trust the board's measurement too well.
But then, like Stick  says, I think that 12.22 is within mentioned margins. 13.58V is too high. So, that's why you should first measure using a multimeter. Measure for a longer time. System idle, system full load. Write everything down and see how steady this psu is. If 12V dances arround, replace it.

  • Difference between K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI and K8N-SLI Platinum

Hey guys.... I have one question and i hope you can help me.
I'm about to get an MSI SLI Platinum motherboard, but it seems that there are two versions, the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI and the K8N-SLI Platinum.
What is the real difference between them? As i can see in the manual, the Neo4 version has the additional SATA2 and Gbit LAN controller.
Anyone: Does your K8N-SLI board have 4 or 6 SATA2 ports? and 1 or 2 LANs?
At this picture  http://www.midtdata.dk/asp/index.asp?varernr=K8N-SLI-PLAT&goto=productinfo&mainfunc=link I can see that there are 6 blue SATA connectors (lower right corner), and 2 LAN ports left to the LPT port... But the description says 4 SATA and 1 LAN, and so says the manual.
To all owners of this mobo:  Does this picture look like your K8N-SLI Platinum or does it look like your K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI ?

  • K8N Platinum Plus and EVGA 7800 GT CO in SLI.... some new info

Well after several weeks of pulling my hair out with SLI crashing, wierd behavior, and other ridiculous issues, here's what I've learned through copius experimentation and much failure.
There is clearly something going on with SLI and this motherboard.  Having the 2 PCIE slots running full 16 lanes, The current 81.98 drivers are bring out the worst in the Diamond Plus.  I had more reboots and safe mode startups then ever.  Actually I almost NEVER had it with the previous SLI or any mobo for that matter.   Also, this mobo is more sensitive to GPU specifics than my others.   As an example, I had one of the 7800 GTs memory start to go bad a while ago.  It was pesky in the Abit AN8 SLI, but in the Diamond Plus, Far Cry would totally melt down and become unplayable.   Same for FEAR.  AFter replacing the offending card, the Diamond Plus started to behave much better in the image clarity perspective.
So now I could get down to getting SLI to work consistently.   The 3Dmark05 benchmarks with the 1 7800 GT was about 4100-4434 depending on AF depth.
When I added the second card, the 81.98 drivers said I could use SLI, so far so good.  But when I enabled it, and then started to play games, BSOD central, especially on FEAR, which is pretty abusive to system resources.   Also, 3Dmark would BSOD occasionally.
I was able to do some uninstalls and reinstalls of the 81.98 drivers, which brought Doom3 into usable condition, although it took several cycles of install with Driver Cleaner to get it right.   With the 81.98s I was able to get most games to work, as well as 3Dmark, although there was still some wierd behavior, such as random reboots with the Safe Mode chooser screen coming up afterwards.   Also, FEAR simply would no run.  It would just crash, BSOD or even worse, it would cause windows to UNLOAD the NV4_disp driver and replace it with the default VGA driver, which would only allow 800x600 at 4bit depth.
This driver self abuse became consistent, where NV4_disp would destroy itself every time.   I called the fantastic EVGA tech guys, they suggested the BETA build of 82.12 NVidia drivers at NZone.com.
Wouldn't you know it.  Everything just STARTED working properly.  No more crashes.  Prime95 runs stable, and 3DMark went to 8118 with 4AA 8AF and 8117 at 4AA 16AF.   There are still some wierd artifacts with FEAR, but it goes away with some finagling.   I wouldn't be surprised if the nasty Creative drivers had some effect here.   The EAX sound gets roached pretty easily
I'm running the CPU at 2.38 Ghz, and the GPUs at stock 470/1000.  Memory is 2-2-2-5 Geil Ultra X

Well, maybe I spoke to soon
Not sure though.      With the 82.12 beta drivers, the system became completely stable.  Was able to produce fast 3DMark scores, and it can run Prime95 for 9-10 hours without a problem.  I never let it go longer cuz I want to use the machine.
Here's what I'm seeing now though.  The blasted machine runs BETTER in games without SLI.   With SLI on, its blotchy, pixelated, and crashy.  Without, it runs fine, albeit a little slow.
Kinda wierd actually.   This behavior is brand new with the installation of the new drivers.  With 81.98, there was massive crashing and hanging.  With 82.12, as long as I don't use SLI, its great in games.   Even WITH SLI, it'll Prime all night and day with nary a problem.
Seems to me there is something going on with the driver here.  The hardware seems ok.  The only thing that comes to mind, at least tacitly, is that there is some wierd interaction between the SLI X16 drivers and the GeForce drivers that is peculiar to this combination.  Dunno though   ???
NHB, the GeForce driver seems to work fine to discover the second card and present SLI to you.  BUT, here is a big BUT, the manual to the mobo is goofy when it shows how to install the SLI bridge between the 2 cards.  Its NOT obvious, but the MSI needs to be facing the back of the case.  If you are looking at the case from the front, MSI needs to be upside down.   I installed it wrong the first time, and the driver didn't make SLI available, even though device manager saw both cards
Grouse.  I'll post the links later today.  I didn't do anything special (at least I don't think  )  to get to those numbers with 3DMark05.
Bear, using an Audigy 2ZS gamer.  Not sure if the creative drivers are guilty, but they are notorious sloppy coders and have problems with them in the past.
JustHanging.  Interesting thought on the memory.  I may try relaxing a bit and see what happens.
Other observations are that FEAR is the hardest game to run, as it needs copius memory just to continue operating.  It seems to load texture maps way ahead of time to keep the action smooth, and with 2 GB, it runs much better.  (too bad I can't get the 2G kit to get stable).
But whats a bummer, is that other game started blowing up all of a sudden with 82.12 and SLI, including original Call of Duty, which never blows up.   So as usual, I am at a loss, but still pluggin away.   I feel like some progess is made, but its always 5 steps forward and 3 back with this stuff

  • Issues with K8N Neo4 Platinum Socket 939 and Athlon64 3000+ Venice

Hello everyone, I am planning a long overdue upgrade of my system. Right now I'm looking at the K8N Noe4 Platinum (non SLI) mobo with a Athlon 64 3000+ Venice CPU.
I haven't seen any posts saying NO DON'T PUT THESE TOGETHER but then maybe I've missed something. Any comments would be appreciated, if you know if any problems that seem common between these two please let me know. Thanks!

there is no problem with them.Just make sure if you can that it will come with the latest Bios that full support Venice core.If not ,then it is easy to update it afterwords.
Just also make sure that with you upgrade that you will have a real good PSU more than 450W or/and with 26-35 A on the +12V rail.

  • Sound problems K8N Platinum Sli neo4

    My system:
    K8N Platinum Sli Neo4
    Asus Nvidia 6800TD
    AMD64 FX-55 (not overclocked) 2.6Ghz
    2 x 512 Corsair 3200XLPT
    Hiper Type-R series 480W PSU
    Creative Labs 7.1 T7900 speakers
    2 x SATA 80Gb Hitachi HGST 7200rpm / 8Mb
I didnt have the problem at the beggining (Had the system 2 weeks, and its been ongoing for a week or so.) but it seems to start after getting into windows... every few minutes "SHHHHHH" then it gets more often, then its just NON stop and a reboot doesnt clear it, nor does turning off/on the power for the speakers. You can faintly still hear the others sounds of games/music, but that much noise over the top is silly. I read here about the power supply problems. Not having a -5v and maybe not enough Amps, but i dont want to jump the boat and replace my PSU, seeing as i do get sound anyway, so maybe its not the problem. I see in the PSU manual, it quotes about pin 7 and 20 being -5VDC. I take it thats the ones i need? and on the +12V1 18A, so thats too low Amp wise, could be the prob? (dunno what the VDC and V1 is about). Also it seems to be the LEFT and RIGHT speakers mainly... the green lead. Soon as i take that out, the "SHHHHHH" stops, except for a few occasions on the remaining speakers. One last thing, ive not been able to get sound from the Middle right or left speakers, except when i change to 5.1 in the settings and flip the 5.1 convert to 7.1 switch on the Amplifier, and it makes the side speakers the rear ones, lol.
It doesnt seems to be a problem with my speakers, because i can plug any headphones/speakers in that green socket and "SHHHHH" again. Im out of ideas, so anyone else know about a solution???

    Hi Jamesfle,
if you want the onboard sound to work properly & you feel your psu is under amped &  especially if you purchased both mobo & psu from same supplier (you can argue incompatability). i'd try to rma the PSU At worse you may have a restocking fee but at least you'll have something that works properly with
Alternatively but possibly with a longer lead time follow Wonkanoby's suggestion to return the mobo for MSI to supply a non -5v board.
    luck

  • K8N Platinum Video and S-ATA issues

    hey,
here is my problem: i bought some hardware 3 weeks ago, including:
    A64 3800+ (Venice), MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (MS-7125), Leadtek PX6800 GT TDH (265MB), Be Quiet! 450 Watt Titanium S1.3
in exchange for my old system (2500+, Abit K7N, ATi Radeon 9800SE AiW, 320W Enermax PSU)
the hardware change went great, had no errors after the exchange, windows xp (sp2) worked for 2 weeks. though, some things are errorous like the nForce eth being detected but no drivers installed, nForce raid not being detected - stuff like that probably resulting from a missing format c: and really clean install.
now things get quite strange. a friend of mine gave me 2 of his s-ata hdds (both maxtor, one 160gb and the other 200gb) - after plugging them onto the nforce s-ata raid, i was still able to get into the bios (at this time it was the biosversion the board shipped with) but the keyboard was locked (or the pc froze after entering the bios - can't tell for sure). unplugged the drives - and it was working again.
let's get to the main problem. after the problems above i thought "well, ok, let's reset the cmos, maybe i configured it wrong" so i shut down my pc and pushed the "clear cmos" button - then i did a normal boot, i heared the "beep", everything was just fine - but my TFT stayed black. i had a similar situation on my old board, so i disconnected the psu and removed the battery for 10 seconds. boot: display worked again. i immediately checked my bios (which was indeed resetted) but did not change anything. reboot -> black screen. now, the funny thing is.. the gfx card got 2 dvi and 1 s-video output (one dvi and s-video were connected) so i checked my tv - guess what, i saw the POST  now i knew the board was "working" and my assumptions of which the black screen results in a crashed videocard/mobo were wrong. i sat there and watched windows xp boot up - and suddenly (after the xp vga drivers have been loaded i guess) my tft displays the image!
now this is VERY odd and tbh i really don't know what to say. anyways, i started msi liveupdate and downloaded/installed the latest official bios update (via winflash because i don't have a floppy anymore) to see if that might fix something. it didn't.
and now here i am, desperate and confused because i don't know whether or not it's a mobo or gfx issue - all i know is that it suddenly appeared after the cmos clear (sadly there's no "description" of whether you should press that button when the pc is shut off, psu is disconnected, mobo is running its post whatever) and i can't find a logical reason for this behaviour
to add another detail to the story, after i found out the video output was sent via s-video, i tried all combinations (dvi1 connected, dvi2 not, s-video not / dvi1 not, dvi2 connected, s-video not / dvi1 + 2 not, s-video connected / etc.) but the only source i can get the post from (until WinXP loads) is the s-video out.
i think maybe it could be the gfx card's bios, which loads up BEFORE the post begins (leadtek welcome screen, ram counts itself -> post -> os) but i'm not sure about it either
    ANY help is very appreciated
*edit* i forgot to mention: it worked before! after hitting this nifty little button, the display problems began...

Hey guys, i recently overclocked my amd 64 3500 cpu to 2.4ghz (from 2.2ghz) i was wondering if any could tell me how high i can get this cpu up to using the msi k8n platinum sli mobo.
At the moment the cpu's temp goes to 40-45 oC.
If i can overclock the cpu some more, can anyone give me detailed instructions on how to overclock it as i'm computer newbie.
i'm using the standard amd heatsink and fan so i know that will comprimise the potentail of the cpu's overclocking capability, as i heard that some people managed to get their cpu up to 3.ghz with a high quality fan, so i was just wondering if anyone can tell me how high i can get my cpu frequency with a standard fan as i really don't want to risk damaging the cpu if i go overboard.
    Thnx in advance.

  • Lan issues with the K8N NEO4 Platinum NF4U 939 Motherboard

    New K8N NEO4 Platinum NF4U 939 Motherboard.
After three or four hours the connection started to get unstable.  I am a high end gamer and any net slowdown I see and feel.
Using my "Ping Plotter" program i saw the issue.  The first hop to my router was going from 0 to 47ms.  On all of the other conputers on this network hop one stays at 0.
In looking at the over all ping to my game server I noted that when hop 0 went to 47 it messed up all of the other hops and made the connection to my game server unstable.
The odd thing is I bypassed the onboard nic's and installed a PCI nic and it did the same thing.
I got with MSI and they had ne updare the NVIDA drivers.  This lowered the swing to 0-17.  I removed the PCI lan and am now back with the onboard nic.  I have replaced the DSL modem, cable and removed the dlink and the issue is still the same.
This is my first computer with XP and at this point I do not know if this is an XP issue or a driver issue.
In installing a pci nic some of the network control is still done on the motherboard so that does not rule out a motherboard/chipset driver issue.
I have set up a web site that shows screen shots of the ping plotter.  Please take the time to look at them and tell me what you think.

    Hello !!
Please give more information about your system specs.
But i would try the following:
Download the latest nforce and vga drivers from nvidia ( if you are using nv VGA card ? ). Google for "driver cleaner" and download it.
Restart system and press F8 to enter safe mode. Now uninstall all nvidia drivers(chipset & VGA), and run Driver Cleaner after it. Select the nvidia tabs and remove them....
Now reboot, when prompted to install new drivers cancel this process. And start nvidia chipset driver setup, install all drivers but do not install the IDE driver from nvidia, you will be prompted for this.In first attempt you should not install nvidia firewall. Restart and install VGA drivers. Now test again your network connection. I hope it helps....

  • K8N Platinum SLI

Their is a review over at Xbitlabs on the Diamond board. Xbitlabs - Diamond Review
It states that the K8N Platinum SLI board is actually using the nForce4 Ultra chipset?? and not the nForce4 SLI chipset?
MSI’s product range also includes an analogous mainboard called K8N SLI Platinum which is a little bit less expensive than the K8N Diamond, is based on the nForce4 Ultra and, accordingly, doesn’t support the SLI mode. So, one of the PCI Express x16 slots of the K8N SLI Platinum works as PCI Express x2 on the logical level. Otherwise the two mainboard models are identical.
Yet the specs on MSI's web site definatly state it is using the nForce4 SLI chipset.
    K8N Platinum SLI
Can someone from MSI clear this up, is it the SLI or Ultra chipset and is it capable of 8x/8x and not 16x/2x as Xbitlabs have stated.

XBit got it wrong.  MSI Taiwan first listed these boards, (three of them) named K8N SLI Platinum, K8N Diamond, and K8N Neo 4 Platinum.  Both the SLI Platinum and the K8N Diamond use the NF4 SLI chip.
The confussion begins when MSI USA renames the K8N SLI Platinum to K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI.  These are the same boards.  Both the K8N Diamond & K8N SLI Platinum//NEO 4 Platinum SLI use the same  NF4 SLI chip.  Only the K8N Neo 4 Platinum uses the Ultra chip.
I've looked at the Diamond specs and the actuall board the US has, (K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI) and they are identical.  Same amount of sata ports, same amount of onboard lan ports.   The only difference between these two boards was A)where they are being marketed, & B)The Diamond was to include the BT & WiFi, plus the piece of plastic for the Diamond Club.
These are actual .jpg's of the actual boards.

The Ultra listing is also wrong in both countries, it is actually shipping with two onboard lan connections, four nv sata connectors, four silicon image sata connectors.  Link to Ultra Pic

It's still a Neo 4 board, notice the diamond version doesn't say Neo 4 either.
Thats incorrect, the "K8N Platinum SLI" and the "K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI" are different by the missing silicone image SATA controller and single vs duel gigabit nic's...
K8N Platinum SLI = 4 SATA ports and single Gb Nic  (this is the low cost SLI option)
K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI is sold in America and is identical to the Diamond (has the silicone image SATA controller) for 6 SATA ports and Dual Gb Nic's but don't expect the Duel Net Card with bluetooth and wireless.
K8N Neo4 Platinum is the plain old nforce4 ultra offering.
Check the differences on msicomputer.com vs msi.com.tw and it will become clearer, its taken me 2 months to get my head around it all.

Can anyone help as my next option is to go back to crapy yoyo tech who recommended and speced the solution knowing that there is an issue with the diamond model of the motherboard as you need -5 v for sound to work :-( nice!
I've tried triders from nvidia (forceware stuff) and got latest amd driver + msi live update.
Have not connected the front panel speaker connections either.
    Thanks in advance peeps.

  • K8N platinum and firewall

I just bought K8N platinum and got some problems with the firewall, I cant choose any other profile, like custom, high, low and medium.
the problems is that when I tell it to change it starts and it stands: "Configuration settings are being applied" and there it stands forever (just tested, it stood like that for 6 houres before I shut it down)  and under it stands :
Error in ProfileCustom1Base Set : Invalid selection. Please choose a valid selection.
Error in ProfileCustom2Base Set : Invalid selection. Please choose a valid selection.
is it any solution to this?
I have tried to update, reinstall drivers

You can even set the icon to the nVidia one and you won't know the difference.
