K8N Platinum SLI

Their is a review over at Xbitlabs on the Diamond board. Xbitlabs - Diamond Review
It states that the K8N Platinum SLI board is actually using the nForce4 Ultra chipset?? and not the nForce4 SLI chipset?
MSI’s product range also includes an analogous mainboard called K8N SLI Platinum which is a little bit less expensive than the K8N Diamond, is based on the nForce4 Ultra and, accordingly, doesn’t support the SLI mode. So, one of the PCI Express x16 slots of the K8N SLI Platinum works as PCI Express x2 on the logical level. Otherwise the two mainboard models are identical.
Yet the specs on MSI's web site definatly state it is using the nForce4 SLI chipset.
K8N Platinum SLI
Can someone from MSI clear this up, is it the SLI or Ultra chipset and is it capable of 8x/8x and not 16x/2x as Xbitlabs have stated.

XBit got it wrong.  MSI Taiwan first listed these boards, (three of them) named K8N SLI Platinum, K8N Diamond, and K8N Neo 4 Platinum.  Both the SLI Platinum and the K8N Diamond use the NF4 SLI chip.
The confussion begins when MSI USA renames the K8N SLI Platinum to K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI.  These are the same boards.  Both the K8N Diamond & K8N SLI Platinum//NEO 4 Platinum SLI use the same  NF4 SLI chip.  Only the K8N Neo 4 Platinum uses the Ultra chip.
I've looked at the Diamond specs and the actuall board the US has, (K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI) and they are identical.  Same amount of sata ports, same amount of onboard lan ports.   The only difference between these two boards was A)where they are being marketed, & B)The Diamond was to include the BT & WiFi, plus the piece of plastic for the Diamond Club.
These are actual .jpg's of the actual boards.

The Ultra listing is also wrong in both countries, it is actually shipping with two onboard lan connections, four nv sata connectors, four silicon image sata connectors.  Link to Ultra Pic

  • Various advice needed to overclock cpu using my MSI k8n platinum sli

Hey guys, i recently overclocked my amd 64 3500 cpu to 2.4ghz (from 2.2ghz) i was wondering if any could tell me how high i can get this cpu up to using the msi k8n platinum sli mobo.
At the moment the cpu's temp goes to 40-45 oC.
If i can overclock the cpu some more, can anyone give me detailed instructions on how to overclock it as i'm computer newbie.
i'm using the standard amd heatsink and fan so i know that will comprimise the potentail of the cpu's overclocking capability, as i heard that some people managed to get their cpu up to 3.ghz with a high quality fan, so i was just wondering if anyone can tell me how high i can get my cpu frequency with a standard fan as i really don't want to risk damaging the cpu if i go overboard.
    Thnx in advance.
P.S Does anyone come across any green flashing lights while playing their games when the high performance settings mode is set to optimized in bios settings mode??

  • Sound problems K8N Platinum Sli neo4

    My system:
    K8N Platinum Sli Neo4
    Asus Nvidia 6800TD
    AMD64 FX-55 (not overclocked) 2.6Ghz
    2 x 512 Corsair 3200XLPT
    Hiper Type-R series 480W PSU
    Creative Labs 7.1 T7900 speakers
    2 x SATA 80Gb Hitachi HGST 7200rpm / 8Mb
I didnt have the problem at the beggining (Had the system 2 weeks, and its been ongoing for a week or so.) but it seems to start after getting into windows... every few minutes "SHHHHHH" then it gets more often, then its just NON stop and a reboot doesnt clear it, nor does turning off/on the power for the speakers. You can faintly still hear the others sounds of games/music, but that much noise over the top is silly. I read here about the power supply problems. Not having a -5v and maybe not enough Amps, but i dont want to jump the boat and replace my PSU, seeing as i do get sound anyway, so maybe its not the problem. I see in the PSU manual, it quotes about pin 7 and 20 being -5VDC. I take it thats the ones i need? and on the +12V1 18A, so thats too low Amp wise, could be the prob? (dunno what the VDC and V1 is about). Also it seems to be the LEFT and RIGHT speakers mainly... the green lead. Soon as i take that out, the "SHHHHHH" stops, except for a few occasions on the remaining speakers. One last thing, ive not been able to get sound from the Middle right or left speakers, except when i change to 5.1 in the settings and flip the 5.1 convert to 7.1 switch on the Amplifier, and it makes the side speakers the rear ones, lol.
It doesnt seems to be a problem with my speakers, because i can plug any headphones/speakers in that green socket and "SHHHHH" again. Im out of ideas, so anyone else know about a solution???

    Hi Jamesfle,
if you want the onboard sound to work properly & you feel your psu is under amped &  especially if you purchased both mobo & psu from same supplier (you can argue incompatability). i'd try to rma the PSU At worse you may have a restocking fee but at least you'll have something that works properly with
Alternatively but possibly with a longer lead time follow Wonkanoby's suggestion to return the mobo for MSI to supply a non -5v board.
    luck

It's still a Neo 4 board, notice the diamond version doesn't say Neo 4 either.
Thats incorrect, the "K8N Platinum SLI" and the "K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI" are different by the missing silicone image SATA controller and single vs duel gigabit nic's...
K8N Platinum SLI = 4 SATA ports and single Gb Nic  (this is the low cost SLI option)
K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI is sold in America and is identical to the Diamond (has the silicone image SATA controller) for 6 SATA ports and Dual Gb Nic's but don't expect the Duel Net Card with bluetooth and wireless.
K8N Neo4 Platinum is the plain old nforce4 ultra offering.
Check the differences on msicomputer.com vs msi.com.tw and it will become clearer, its taken me 2 months to get my head around it all.

Venice and san diego cores has no fixed vcore based on their opn numbers as earlier models.
It's variable (new feature) and this is probably causing motherboard vendors some headakes where it
comes to vcore modification and over volting in bios implemetation .
    Ref: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/athlon64-venice_3.html
That appears to be the case...based on this response I got from MSI today!  Looks like a fully compatable BIOS for Venice and San Diego will not arrive until June.....

    Dear Customer,
Since the mb has not been certified to support the Venice and San Diego Core processors, please wait until beginning of June, 2005 for the release bios support for the mb.

I tried this BIOS and it only allowed a max of 1.4V on CPU VID which read as 1.31V in the hardware monitor…when I added the 9.9%.... the highest it would show is 1.47V No better than before….

  • MSI K8N Platinum (SLI/non-SLI) under Linux

    Hi,
I am planning to buy/build a new system soon. I am quite sure I will take a MSI board and it will probably be one of the Platinum boards.
I will mainly be using Linux on it, so I would like to hear from Linux useres around here how well the different features on the boards work and what kind of problems they had.
    Thanks for your input

Hey guys i need someone to help me out with a few problems i'm having with my motherboard.
Everytime when i set the high performance mode to "optimized" In bios settings,  i get these weird colors when i play my games, most of the time i get these green flashing lights all over the screen, sometimes the colors change to purple.
I know its something to do with the motherboard because everytime when it is set to optimized the problem happens, so the only way i can fix this problem is by setting the high performance mode back to manual.
I contacted Msi, but like always they were useless, so i decided to download the latest BIOS drivers, but it didn't fix the problem.
Sounds to me like a problem with the video cards. this usually happens when you OC too much the video card, or there is not enough cooling, mainly on the graphic memory. check your video card temperatures, and maybe you can add some extra cooling in that area of your case.

  • K8N Platinum SLI 2nd graphics card problem

I just purchased a second SLI card MSI NX6600GT-TD128 and installed it in the first PCI-E slot moving my old MSI NX6600GT down to the second slot. The MB is in the topic header and the SLI mode chip is set to SLI. I'm running Windows XP x64 with 81.98 forceware drivers and windows recognizes the second card and everything is running in multi-GPU mode just fine.
Finally my problem with all this is the fan on the card in the second slot will not run! This is the card that I was using before and was working without issue. The second slot does not seem to kick on the fan for any reason so obviously the card starts to run really hot if I run a game using SLI. I had a card in this slot before that I believed was defective since artifacts started to appear after a couple of heat failures and I think it's because the fan never ran. Is there some setting I'm missing to get that fan going?
Bios is at v3.4 by the way. I haven't seen any of the more current bios address this issue so I haven't flashed it.

As you have tried both cards in the second slot, and both give the same results, ie fan not working, but fans work when installed on the first slot, then I would say thet the second PCI-e slot is faulty.
I would not suggest running a blower fan facing the second card as a workaround to the problem, In my rig the second card always runs a few degrees hotter than the first card. Yes you could connect the fan to the PSU, you can buy adaptor leads to do this, if thats the route you wish to follow. But if I was you, I'd contact the supplier for your mobo, and arrange to get it exchanged. I very much doubt that the extra current draw for a Fan to work is caused by the PSU as you have said that the card itself works fine in SLI mode with no artifacts appearing. And as you have not reported any other problems with your rig, it points towards the slot. Protect the investment you've made on the card, and get the mobo fixed / exchanged.
Your PSU is ok for now, but shortlist a new one for your next upgrade.
Let us know how you get on.

I hear you need to "Slipstream" some drivers into a winxp OS Disk. Try googling that query "Slipstream+Nvidia+XP" or something like this. Heck, try doing a search here in the MSI forum. I saw something about this recently on this site.
    Good luck
EDIT: I also remember seeing some problems with certain SATA ports. You have 1-4 and 5-8 on that mobo dont you?

  • K8N Platinum SLI will not do anything after BIOS upgrade! HELP!

    Hi guys,
I just upgraded my BIOS version using MSI Live Update. I rebooted the system, checked my BIOS settings and proceeded into Windows. Windows re-detected some hardware and said I needed to reboot. Instead I decided to shutdown completely and then power-on again.
However, the system will no longer display anything! All the fans come on, and I can hear my HDD power-up too, but nothing is displayed on screen and there is no HDD activity. The LEDs on the D-Bracket are showing 1.Red 2.Orange. 3.Red 4.Orange.
I have disconnected all hardware except my main HD and Graphics Card and reset the BIOS. I did the by using the button and by removing the battery for 10/15 minutes or so. Still no change!
I have also tried re-seating my Graphics card and RAM, but since I only rebooted - I don't see how anything could have come loose...
Please help me to diagnose the problem.
    Thanks!
P.S. I do not overclock at all.

The only guy I know with an AMD x64 PC lives too far away for me to just pop-over and check the components. My local PC store would charge an arm and a leg to check the PC out and I'm not even sure I would trust them to do it right. As for Best Buy, we don't have those over here in the UK.
I have an Antec Neopower 480, which is still powering all my case fans and HDDs.
I am almost certain that the Motherboard or Processor is at fault, so I have ordered a new MOBO. If that doesn't fix it, then I presume it will be the Processor.
I think it must have been something to do with the BIOS upgrade, it can't just be a coincidence.

  • New K8N Platinum SLI and X2 AMD

    Hello all,
a friend of mine is thinking about buying this board with a new X2 cpu, but the question is if the mb is going to boot with this cpu without being flased at first with the right bios version which supports this cpu... might be it work although being detected as a lower one?
Thx very much for the answer.

If you can, verify the board revision number, and or the BIOS version.

  • K8N Platinum, no front sound

    Hi folks,
I have a K8N Platinum SLi with an AMD64 +3500, I'm using the onboard Live 24-bit chipset. I also have a zalman ZM400B-APS 20 pin PSU. I know my speakers are ok and I have downloaded the newest creative drivers but I can't get sound on the front speakers. The rear, centre and sub work fine.
I have noticed on this forum that other users are having difficulties with creative chipset and their resolution was to get a PSU with a -5 volts rail (24 pin), these people get no sound, whereas I get some sound, do I still fall under this catagory?
    cheers
    Dave

    Cheers guys,
the leads are all ok, I've even swapped the leads incase the front one was broken but to no avail, the control panel is also setup ok, I ran the "Creative Speaker Settings" software and when it goes from channel to channel all the speakers work apart from the front!
I've just plugged in my Audigy Sound card and that gives me all speakers so definetly not a prob with the speakers. But I think the Live 24 is better than the audigy so I'd rather use that!
    any ideas?

I came within a whisker of ordering a non-returnable  3700 Venice, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI mobo and an upgraded Power Supply, Antec's newest 550W PS the TP2-550 EPS12V ($117).  This has dual 2x24pin 12V 19A rails and is touted as the new V2.0 EPS12V/ATX12v compatible power supply for high performance SLI systems.  By accident I came across a page at MSI for this mobo
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mai...ail.php?UID=641
At the end is this warning:  MSI Reminds You...
    • For this model, you must use a Power Supply which has a -5V pin supply. Also, the users manual which I downloaded on Pg 2-10 says the same thing
The above Antec PS specs do not  show a -5V rail, nor does an Enermax 600W I looked at.  The V2.0 specs for ATX12v which added 2x24pin 12V rails dropped -5V rail from the spec and it appears MSI is not conforming to the spec (See Antec response at end) None of the web sites selling these PS & mobos contain any warning.  I vaguely recall from a forum a while back it may have something to do with the Soundblaster system in the mobo.

Isn't this a major showstopper which is going to cause a lot of grief for those of us upgrading to SLI systems using this mobo and upgrading our PS to the newest & best power design?  We won't know the PS won't work until we build the system.

    Antec reply to me:
    >>>>Thanks for the link. Since MSI's website does state the motherboard needs the -5v, the True550EPS12V will not work with this motherboard. The Standard (http://enhanceusa.com/documents/atx12v_v2.01.pdf) has removed the use for the -5v rail and it is no longer needed. MSI has not manufactured that motherboard to the Standard. Finding an ATX12V v2.0 power supply with the -5v might be hard to find. You should contact MSI for a compatibility list of power supplys that were tested to work with the K8N SLI Platinum.

Wow!!  syar2003 thanks for that post.  I've spend an hour going through it &  fasteddies links.  Now I are a power expert.  The dual rail argument is enough for me to go back to the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI with one of the single rail PS -5V units listed by fasteddie. The only question left now refers to computerpro3  recommendation on ultra power supplies for SLI
    >>I quite simply wouldn't dream of putting anything else in my machine. Keep in mind, this section is for 2x 6800 models, not the 6600's which most any good psu will handle (like Antec Neopower, ocz 520, etc). . Pc Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe SLI edition (refer to list)
    2. Zippy/Emacs 550-700w models
    3. OCZ 600w (personally I would get the pcp&c for the price, but it's been proven here, so I'll be fair...).
These are really high end, expensive and only 3-4 choices. Since I'm getting one 6800GT and eventually another & possibly eventually a 4800 X2, I was hoping the OCZ 520W would do it but computerpro3 says Powermaster 520 isn't good enough for SLI.  I found that there is an OCZ 600W ATX12 dual rail which surprisingly has a -5V rail needed for K8N Neo4 SLI Soundblaster.  Will this meet computerpro3's preference for a high end PS for SLI systems even though I'm losing the 1 rail advantage.  Maybe the 600 Watts just overwhelms the 1 rail/2 rail question.
Thanks again for the teriffic help

Wondering what you settled on.  I got the Antec TP550 and it's flawless on the board.  I even have the older 20pin model which works perfectly (including sound).  If you really wanted what I would consider to be a top dog (pcpower and cooling), and find the -5v rail missing, all you have to do is place a phone order and request they add a -5v rail.  It's a minimal cost and a total solution for having everything.  Just my $0.02

  • How are some guys running an Athlon 3800+ X2 chip on the K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI?

I see many people running an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2 Dual Core proccessor on a K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI board, but mine dosen't work.  I don't get any signal to my monitor (don't know if this is the cause).  MSI says the 3800+X2 dosen't support the SLI board, but many people got it to work.  Any one know how?

Mine working fine, but on cold boot, sometime it hang on me. I have changed 3 PSU to get it stable, from Coolermaster 450W, Be Quiet 520W to Silverstone 650W, ambient 25C, CPU 30C, Proc 37C.
Bios 3.7 the one they are still testing.
Have you check you PSU rails volt., disable CnQ,....
So far stable, multiple programs at once with no significant drop in responseness & speed,  Half Life 2, P2P downloading x2, IE x 3, encode DVD at the same time.
