K8N SLI SATA HD reboot problem

I built my system from scratch and have had it running for well over a year now (mayb two years?) with a K8N SLI-F mobo and Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 PATA without problems, in fact, I've been quite happy.
Then I bought the Hitachi T7K500 SATA and my system has been hell ever since.
My procedurals:
1) unplug PATA and plug in SATA
2) boot to OS CD
3) format SATA and install OS
6) install drivers
7) install firewall
8) system reboots a few moments after loading desktop and doesn't stop until I shut it down manually
I did attach my SATA with a SATA cable to my mobo's SATA port.
I did follow correct procedures for installing OS, drivers and firewall (rebooting each time and being very careful).
I did try installing OS using SATA drivers that came on floppy with the mobo
I have reinstalled the OS three times and have been working on my pc for nine hours straight, not including breaks for meals.

I RMA the new drive because support recommended I replace the drive, my problem occurred only when I tried to install the new drive (was hardware related), I had thirty days to replace it and it certainly can't hurt. Why do you think I RMA a working drive btw?
Let me rephrase my question: how do I update my BIOS when I cannot make a bootable floppy and cannot boot to the OS?
thanks for all your help so far.

I suspect that from the beggining.. Also tests maked after that and further info requested, confirm my suspicions.
"I had thirty days to replace it and it certainly can't hurt."
kk..
"Let me rephrase my question: how do I update my BIOS when I cannot make a bootable floppy and cannot boot to the OS?"
Well in those condition, do that:
When your HDD replacement come, proceed as usual and install XP SP2,(you should be able to do that) and see if problem persist or not.
If problem is still there...(i expect to be still there, but could be wrong ofcourse...), then:
* Try with different power cable for that drive.
* Try with different data cable for that drive.
Re-test, if no change:
Update your BIOS to the latest one version 1.8, you can download it from here:

  • K8N SLI-F so many problems....but I don't think it's the board....

Well you never know it could be the board...but here's the problems.
For the first and most annoying problem. If I change anything inside my case that deals with the power supply the computer won't start unless I unplug one of my hdd. Right now I only have the 2 pata's plugged in because my sata didn't work so it needs to be replaced and the 120 gb pata won't let the computer start. If the hdd is plugged in the computer will start for a second and then turn off by itself. It will only do this once then I have to switch the powersupply off from the back and then switch it back on after a few seconds. I think it has to do with my powersupply but right now its running a 550w real power psu.
The next problem is raid. I have the 2 160's running under a raid 0 configuration but when I try to install windows xp, and its at the Installing Devices, I get a number of boxes asking me if I want to install these drivers which aren't xp certified. The drivers deal with the nVidia raid and sata and pata controllers. So anyways the boxes aren't a problem until I get to one where my mouse and keyboard die but the computer is still running because that little thing on the xp setup keeps going back and forth. both keyboard nad mouse are usb. I think the power supply has something to do with these problems but I don't know. I just bought most of these parts. Any help is good!
    -EDIT-
I fixed the problem in windows xp setup dealing with the raid and keyboard/mouse trouble. I downloaded new raid drivers from MSI and now it works. But...it crashes sometimes and as of yet I still haven't been able to log on to windows.
    Thanks,

Hi! Good news and some bad news. Bad news is that I think my power supply can't handle the load I'm giving it because the there are 3 12v rails and the amps on each aren't that high. The good news is that I fixed the raid problem. I was searching the net last night and found this site which told me everything I needed to know about fixing that damn raid problem. The reason my computer kept restarting after I installed windows xp on raid was because xp was installing the default windows disk controller drivers after the installation completed. Sooo, to fix this I had to slipstream my nvraid drivers to the windows xp setup cd and then install. It worked like a charm! Too bad my computer still randomly shuts off. It has got to be the power supply since I've checked if the board is getting shorted and all the connections etc... So I'm planning to buy a new power supply...any suggestions...I'd also only like 1x12v rail with atleast 32A. Otherwise, I'm good . Thanks to everyone that helped and if anyone has any more suggestions about the power feel free to let me know!

  • K8N SLI Platinum nf4 HD problems

    Hi all,
Today I wanted to run a defrag on my HD before making a backup, my system froze in between and I had to reset it.
After this, the boot was taking forever and the defrag program was very slow, freezing in every step:
    1- Calling it.
    2 - Pressing Analyse
    3 - and so on.
So I never got to ran the defrag again.
I decided to restore an image from 3 days ago.
Restored, the slow boot and the defrag were still there.
Puzzled, I decided to delete the page file and create a new one since it's in a second drive.
Anyway, still slow boot and the defrag problem.
Does anybody knows what may be wrong here ?
    Thanks

    A cold boot solved it.

  • K8N SLI and WinAmp5.05 Problem

The thing is when i listen to my Mp3s using WMP everything sounds fine crystal clear sound is coming from board's integrated SB Live!
    24 bit.
However, whenever  i listen the same music from WinAmp, a crackling sound and hiss appears after a while...
    ...what is the problem?
    Markoul

Due to interference through the groundlayer, I can hear whenever my harddrive is accessed, as HDD Active signal is +5V pulled down to ground. I can however not find exactly where the ground error lies (it might be the board, it might be the case, it might even be the PSU). So for the moment I am using an Audigy 2 that a friend sold to me for about $10 (the swedish equivalent). I have this problem only with the onboard audio. Otherwise the sound is as crisp and crystal clear as you could possibly want with analog speakers.
Have you disabled the Equalizer in Winamp (I never use that one)?
How many amps can your PSU handle on the -5V rail (required to have -5V)? The reason why I ask is that amplifying is created with a difference between +5V and -5V (or any voltage that you have a positive or negative of). The difference between the positive and the negative voltage produce the maximum possible amplification. However, if any of these voltages drop due to overload, the normal amplification range (and it's wave curve if you check frequencies with an oscilloscope) start to look rather strange, which might result in audiable interference inte produced signal (such as clicks, pops and crackling sounds).

LOL, well I have this MOBO and due to the "issue" I will be going to a single card it looks like...but to tell the truth, I never saw that much improvement with dual 6800ultras. I am thinking one new 7800 will be more then enough. Only time will tell

  • Reboot problem with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and 250 GB SATA HDD

I'm having a "reboot" problem with my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. After turning my system on it will run without any problems, until I reboot. After a reboot it will always hang after the initial windows-bootscreen. The HDD-light will remain on. If, instead of going into Windows XP SP2, I try to enter the BIOS after a reboot (DEL) the system will also hang (blank screen with blinking cursor).
It started doing this after I installed the Maxtor 250 GB SATA disk. Before, I didn't have problems rebooting. If I disconnect the Maxtor drive I can reboot and enter BIOS and Windows each and every time. Reconnecting the Maxtor 250 GB SATA drive will return the reboot problem. I always have to use the power swith to get a working system again. It's not enough to do a hard reset (this has the same effect as rebooting).
Here are the details of my system:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (BIOS 1.B)
    Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester, 2 Ghz, 512 KB cache, stepping DH-D0)
    2 x Kingston KVR400X64C25/512, 512 MB, DDR, PC3200 (2,5-3-3-8 T1)
Asus Radeon AX800 Pro (256 MB)
    PSU Antec Sonata 380W
HDD Maxtor 80Gb ATA (6Y080P0, Pri Master)
    HDD Seagate 250Gb SATA (ST3200822AS)
HDD Maxtor 250Gb SATA (6V250F0 - jumpered in SATA150 mode, the mobo wouldn't work with the drive in SATA300-mode)
Aopen COM5232/AAH Pro CD-Writer ATA (Sec Master)
BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer ATA (Sec Slave)
P.S. The NVidia IDE-drivers are NOT installed. System is not overclocked.

Thank you for all the replies. Upgrading to the latest Nvidia IDE-drivers did not fix my problem. Moving to other SATA-ports did not help either. Upgrading the mobo's BIOS is not really an option (I'm using one version before the most recent and there isn't anything in the fixlist of the latest BIOS).
Now I've contacted Maxtor for (hopefully) a new firmware.

  • SATA 3GB/s Setting In WINXP Pro SP2 For K8N SLI/FI

I have been trying to resolve this issue for a while with no sucess. I have contacted numerous sources and no one can solve this so I hope you people can.
I have two SATA II 3GB/s HDDs installed on a MSI K8N SLI/FI w/ver. 1.8 BIOS. I cannot get these drives to run at 3GB/s. The drives are a WD2500KS w/02.01C03 firmware and a Seagate ST3250410AS - Barracuda 7000.10 w/3.AAA firmware. All jumpers are removed from each drive. I have tried diff. SATA cables. You name it, I tried it. This includes loading and not loading SATA driver via F6 at OS install time and using diff nVidia SATA drivers; 6.66, 6.99, etc.
The problem is that when I view the speed setting options for the nVidia SATA controller in WIN XP Pro SP2, I see all three options shown 1.5 GB, 3.0 GB, and PIO 4 with 1.5 GB set as default. I have tried to manually override to 3 GB but upon reboot, it goes back to 1.5 GB? The Seagate drive has NCQ enabled by default.
I looked at the SATA driver WIN XP registry entries for each drive and SataSpeedSupported is 3 and SataSpeedAllowed is 1? Also appears UDMA is being downgraded from 128 to 64? I have tried to override both these only again to have XP reset them back to their original values on reboot. It is as if XP will not allow any option above 1.5GB?
Finally, the drive speeds are great. I am getting avg. sustained speeds of 80 MB/s on the Seagate and around 60 MB/S on the WD per HD Tach. Also appears that the drives are running in ATA133 mode?
Is their a problem with XP SP2B recognizing newer SATA 3GB/s HDDs

As far as peaks and valleys on the HD Tach display, it's fairly smooth. Starts in the low 80s and goes to about 90 for the first 120GB or so and then gradually drops to around 50 at the end of the drive. When I was running with the default MS default PCI IDE drivers, I was getting a few large downward spikes.
Use BIOS defaults is set on by default. Setting it on or off makes no difference in setting or performance.
As far as BIOS setting to 1.5GB that's what I thought initially but on a EPOX nForce board I have that only supported 1.5GB, the 3GB option was never shown as an option. So it appears to me that the BIOS is indeed passing the 3GB setting to XP. It looks to me like XP is downgrading these drives to 1.5GB and for the life of me. I can't figure out why. What I did as a prior experiment was to set the SataSpeedActive to 2 and bumbed up the UDMASupported registry settings to the max. 127. That resulted in the 3GB option being shown as the default. Ran a couple of benchmarks at that setting but results were the same as 1.5GB except that the max. speed bar on the nVidia SATA controller showed 300MB. When I rebooted as I stated previously, the settings went back to 1.5GB in the SATA controller display.
What I am wondering is if there was an earlier ver. of the m/b that only supported 1.5GB? I bought this board a couple of months ago from the MSI online store and it was an open box sale. What is strange is the four SATA board connectors are orange and every pic. I have seem of this m/b on the web shows purple connectors? MSI swears the board I have supports 3GB SATA?
On other point. Everest shows the SATA port transfer speed at 300MB in both it's Windows and ATA device displays?
Also, when I look at the driver properties, it is shown as a PCI device. Is that right? If somehow these drives were running off the PCI bus instead of the CK08-04 chip, that would explain the speed limit factor.

  • Serius Problem K8N-SLI

Hi my name is Emiliano, look, i have a lot of bug with your Mmotherboard (K8N-SLI).
Don't know if are drivers, BIOS, or a hard problem, so please help me.
    This games doesn't works fine:
    Neverwinter Nights
Bug: After a while the game accelerate too much that become impossible to play.
    Dragonshard
     Bug: Same as Nevewinter Nights.
    Painkiller
     Bug: Same as Nevewinter Nights.
Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic II
     Bug: Same as Nevewinter Nights.
    Star Wars: Empire At War
Bug: Crash and back to windows when finish loading the menu but no error message.
    Fable: The Lost Chapter
Bug: Crash and back to windows sometimes when playing. No error message.
    Breath Of Fire 4
Bug: Crash and back to windows after playing a while. No error message.
Now, I have tryed a lot of driver version for the video card, this is the list:
    66.93
    67.03
    84.21
    81.98
    91.31
No way, its all the same.
However, when i install Omega Drivers games doesn't have the bugs i report.
With Omega Drivers (ForceWare 66.93) i have different bugs, when i'am playing and i go back to windows,
sometimes windows crash and reboot, or when i'm running some application with OpenGl or Direct3D the monitor shutdown and i'am forced to reboot.
I change my video card (geforce 6600 GTnVidia Drivers) with another, ATIATi Drivers, i don't remember the model now, but nothing happened, bugs still works fine (¬¬"). I try my video card (geforce 6600GT) in another motherboard, and obviusly works fine without any bugs.
So, i think that is the motherboard, now i try out this things to see if some drivers was unstable:
    - Disable sound.
    - Disable Onboard LAN
    - Disable PCI Bridge
    - Disable PCI Memory Controller
    - Disable SMBUS
Nothing change, i should update the BIOS, but, when i read the notes for the 1.6 about fixed bugs:
    2. This BIOS fixes the following problem of the previous version:
    - Add safety recover function to revert BIOS into default setting when system unable to boot due to overclocking.
I supposed that has nothing to do with my bugs...
    No Hardware is overheating !!.
With others games i don't have any problems, like:
    Age Of Empires III
    The Battle For Middle-earth II
    Doom 3
Please help me in some way becouse don't know what to do.
    this is my complete configuration:
    MSI K8N-SLI NForce 4
    Athlon 64 X2 4200+

    1 CD-RW LG                 IDE
    400W Supply
Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2
    DirectX 9.0
I have all drivers Update, except the BIOS.
I'm sure is the motherboard becouse i try my video card in another computer, another MSI motherboard, and works fine, sorry if i don't remember the model, i just remember that was not a SLI motherboard.
Somebody toldme that can be the PCIE drivers, but, theres no way to update it..... or i don't know it.

  • Any known problems: MSI K8N SLI Platinum + seagate 7200.9 sata2 hdd?

    Hi all.
I planning to buy Seagate sataII 7200.9 250GB drive (model: ST3250824AS) very soon (finally they are in stock in my city), but first i want to know is there any incompatibility issues or other problems with such combination - MSI K8N SLI Platinum + seagate 7200.9 series hdd.
I don't have any experience with sata2 drives yet. Currently i'm using seagate 7200.7 120GB IDE hdd.
I don't plan use RAID or use that new 7200.9 drive in combination with current 7200.7 drive (will use current hdd in other pc).
    Any tips/experience would be great.

Seagate SATA II 7200.9 250GB drive (model: ST3250824AS) has both 3 G/bps speed and NCQ (Native Command Queuing) most all MB’s with the nVidia Chipsets using the nForce4 chip will have problems.  If they are not using RAID and you reduce the speed to 1.5 G/bps with a single drive you maybe able to get it to work.  Personally, I know the MS-7125 and MS-7220 both will not run RAID with those to motherboards.
I have been battling with MSI and ASUS over this problem sense November and they have not come up with a fix.  Problem involved BIOS and RAID Controller Driver for the chipset.  Most MSI motherboards latest BIOS have fixed the BIOS half of the problem.  There is an unreleased 32-bit driver for Windows, but nothing for Windows XP 64.

  • Power problem MS-7185-F / k8n SLI

    Hi,
I got a problem with my power supply, i think...
Many times a day i got my system crashes, with a blue screen and error code "BAD_POOL_CALLER". It really pisses me off because my computer reboots several times a day without asking.
Apparently, my +12V power state is to low, when i check on PC Alert, it tells me that my +12V is actually about 2.1 !!!
My voltage is defined at Startup (about 1.35V)
Also, i tried BIOS update from internet (several times), and i don't know if it worked. When i boot i see the version is 1.6, but in Sandra i see 1.3.
Can someone help me figure out how to raise my +12V voltage, or help me get my system work well please?
    My specs are:
    MSI K8N-SLI (ms-7185)
    Athlon X2 3800+ o/c @ 2300 Mhz (10x230)

    I have a ATHLON X2 3800+, 2*512Mo ram, 2*Geforce 6600LE, 1 optical drive and 3*HD.
What PSU should i take (in Watt), at least and what should i take to have my computer work well ?
Forget watt's they are a bogus figure.....
Personaly I would go for the OCZ Powerstream 520W if you plan to upgrade your system in the future.
Else I would go for the Enermax 465.
Both have 33A @ 12V single rail and have enough juice to power even the most heavy systems today.

  • Problems with older PCI-Videocards on K8N SLI Platinum ??

    Hi there,
i just recieved my K8N SLI Platinum (without NEO) yesterday. Unfortunatly my new PCIe-Videocard isn't here yet,
so i just built my rig with an old S3 Trio64 to install Windows etc. and to have at least my PC for some surfing and so on...
    The problem is:
The Card is marked with an ! in the device-manager. It says the card couldn't get its required resources, and that i'd have to
disable some other device of the system first to fully use the videocard. I checked for IRQ's, but the card has an exclusive one.
I put it in the second (middle) PCI-Slot on the board. Due to that error, the drivers are not installed correctly and the performance
of the display is ... well its even to slow for scrolling pages while surfing ... thats realy anoying, and my PCIe-card will not be here
until the end of next week
I even manged to get another old PCI-dinosaur, but with no luck. The same Problem persists. So i think it's some problem with
the board or some iossettings. The only thing regarding display in the bios was the PCIe / PCI switch which is correctly set to PCI.
So if anyone knows how to get an old PCI-card running in that board, please help me
    [ApoC]

    Well,
"f***ing up" the OS is not a problem, i got a GHOST of my perfectly fresh & clean OS.
    I have disabled:
both SATA-Controllers (still running on good old ATA Samsung SpinPoint P80)
the FireWire-Controller (which is shown in Windows anyways  )
I changed the videocard from PCI 2 to PCI 1, with the only result that it shares IRQ with the OnBoard-Soundblaster in slot1.
In slot2 it gets an exclusive IRQ. The problem is, i can't even see what resources are making trouble since Windows doesn't
show any information in the cards resource-infos but that it ain't working (say what?)
    *sigh*
    [ApoC]
    Edith says:
I remember problems with the APIC-Mode on many nForce-2 Boards. Could this still be a problem? Any infos on that matter yet?

Kinda sounds like what happens to my 2 machines (a Mac & PC) that share a monitor, USB keyboard & USB printer through a KVM switch....
On occasion the the Mac's CD tray will pop open on it's own while it's booting if the PC is already on. Someone on the Apple formus told me it was a spurious "nonsense" command generated through the USB connection of the switch while it's trying to "sync up".
While it's a little irritating, it's nothing to worry about.

HAPPY NEW YEAR (in France, it's done)
And for my computer, all is allright now
Like a silly boy, I've connected too much things in the beginning (USB Hub I've forgot not to plug)..
And so without that, computer boots well, CPU is seeing good, RAM is OK and all the drives..
Some problems with my OS (XP and SP2), but as somebody says above, I needed to "repair" it, and all is good now
    Thanks for your answer...
    Best regards...
happy new year  nice everything goes well

  • SATA II Drive on K8N - SLI Mobo

    Hello Folks,
Please can you give a few words of wisdom on the following topic:
I've recently upgraded to the K8N - SLI mobo with AMD 64 3200 CPU, 1GB ram and a Hitachi 250gb SATA II drive.
I booted from the WinXP disc, selected F6 to install additional raid drivers, accepted, and proceeded to install XP which works fine. The system boots ok but the BIOS (flashed using MS Live Update to version 2) shows the drive as 5th IDE master, and then WinXP "system, device manager" shows the drive as Primary ATA.
Is that right? It works but how do i know it has detected it up right?
I've disconnected my original 2 hard drives from IDE1 for simplicity, and the 2 optical drives load fine on the IDE2 cable. My RAID drivers come from the Nvidia site since i didn't get a diskette with the OEM drive.
Did i need to install the drivers from a floppy (i have an MSI CD)?
When asked for 2 separate drivers which should come first, the RAID driver or the STORAGE CONTROLLER?
Is everything normal? Should the drive be called SATA type somewhere?
    Many thanks for your help.
    mick

Thanks for the reply there Petrol. I thought the raid drivers were the name for the SATA drivers i.e. one and the same thing, so although I will not use RAID, I think i need still need the RAID/SATA driver?
I thought I had just cracked it- a short time after providing the extra 2 RAID drivers during the boot, WinXP asked me again for the RAID driver (which i read elsewhere was a good sign!).
It appeared to boot faster or was it just my imagination hoping for a result? Then once the WinXP desktop had come on, it appeared to load some more drivers.
Still when i look in "System....Device manager" the driver is from Windows from 2001 so can't be up to date?
Has it managed to write over the top of the newer SATA drivers during the final part of the install (if so how to turn it off?)?
    thanks again
    mick
