K8NNeo2Plat (bios v1.8) + 9800 PRO = 4x AGP and not 8x?

Hello
My K8N Neo2 Plat (bios v1.8) + 9800 PRO = 4x AGP and not 8x (even with bios setting set to AGP 4x8x, fast writes enabled)?
I am using the latest ATI 5.6 driver but my MSI fails to allow the AGP card to boot up at 8x (only 4x).
Q1) Should I roll back my BIOS to 1.5?
Q2) What is the best BIOS for the MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum?
Any ideas?

fyi, I think I found the problem when in Battlefield2 automatically started to lag (then die)after 10 mins LAN play.
My 9800 Pro (AGP) was dropping back to 4x (or even 1x AGP) at boot and I assume when I was playing a Battlefield2 multiplayer levels for 10 mins+ the texture cache was too much for my 9800 pro card and it had to swap to main memory via AGP 1x or 4x (killing my fps).
I have found our that the latest ATI driver uses a new method of testing your card's reliability and speed called 'GART'. Nvidia's first implementation of 'GART' was not compatible (BSOD) with an MSI K8N Neo2 Plat or XP SP2 so I have never installed the nvidia GART driver (as suggested be many)
Well the new ATI drivers (cat 5.5) need the GART software to read the BIOS '8x AGP' and 'AGP Fast Writes' values.  If the GART software (mainboard driver) is not detected the ATI drivers disables the 8x AGP and Fast Writes  and drops back to compatibility mode.
I installed the GART software tonight (120k file) and bingo, all is well and even my 3d benchmarks are up 25%.
Who would have thought that a video card driver needed a software driver to read BIOS values that have been able to read OK on other video cards since the dawn of time.
I will never buy an ATI video card again.

  • 9800 PRO 8x AGP Voltage?

I have an ATI-RADEON-9800-PRO-128Meg card.I run it at 8X AGP with fast writes enabled.I noticed that the voltage can not be adjusted below 1.55V in the BIOS.ATI states the the 9800-PRO 8x AGP should be 0.8V.AGP 8X (0.8v), 4X (1.5V).Core Center will not allow me to adjust it down below 1.50V.Am I going to ruin my card?It is all set on auto and not user.I just assumed that it was correct until I seen the specs on the card.If I use the SAMRTGART feature in the ATI control panel and change the AGP to 4x,the voltage stays the same at 1.55V.I do not have any problems with the way it is running now.But if it is going to cause damage to my card, should I remove the card until the BIOS is corrected? Now I will be worried about smoking the card.It is only a few months old.

    Hi,
I'm a little bit confused now about these voltages. I understand that AGP 2x/4x/8x = 3.3V/1.5V/0.8V. I bought an RX9800PRO-TD128SP.
I have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard with the following AGP specifications:
    1 x AGP Pro/8X (1.5V only)
The VGA card replaced a Sapphire 9600PRO which only worked with 4x AGP and fast writes off (because in 8x AGP mode I've always encountered the same problem: the games quited to desktop or the monitor went in standby mode - in 3DMark03 it displayed a "monitor lost focus" message and went in standby mode).
So I installed the MSI product and I didn't have any problems with 3DMark03 anymore (I haven't tried playing yet). I have the latest ATI drivers and the AGP is set to 8x and Fast writes is on.
So we've arrived to the point where I'm confused: if my card runs on AGP 8x then the voltage must be 0.8 V. But how is this possible if the motherboard supports AGP 8x 1.5V only. Is this possible that the card can withstand an overvoltage or is this voltage just for signal purposes and all AGP 8x slots have 0.8 V (the ABIT motherboards - like NF7-S - support AGP 8x (0.8 V / 1.5 V). Or do I misinterpret something?
I wanted to find the answer in the knowledge base but I failed (page not found error):
    Question:
How can I know what is my AGP card voltage?
    Answer:
    Most AGP4x & AGP 8x card are 1.5v

  • ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x in Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 PMac G4

    Hi,
This is my first time posting to these discussion group... I've been going through related threads and have not found an answer to my problem...
I have a Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 G4. Awhile ago I upgraded the processor to a Sonnet 1.8ghz so I could run Leopard.
I just bough the ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x video card. I researched around and that seemed to be a card that would work in my machine. I even read a review on Amazon where someone had also upgraded to the 1.8 processor used this card with no issues.
I do have an older monitor - Apple Studio Display CRT with the ADC connector. So I also bought the Apple DVI to ADC adapter kit.
I installed the card and do not get any picture at all - I believe I have installed everything correctly. I'm pretty sure I can hear the fan on the video card in the machine. The monitor is getting power from the adapter since the button lights up when I press it - but it does not stay lit -- the monitor never turns on. Using my old graphics card the monitor makes a little "beep" when it turns on.
In reading the other topics I am wondering if it might be a power issue? According to Other World Computing's profile my machine has a max of 220 watts. Although they suggest this video card as one the will work in my machine.
I have disabled the hard drive that came with the machine (too small) and am using two Maxtor hard drives that I added - one ATA (120gb) and one SATA (500gb) that is connected to an SATA pci card. I also have two additional pci cards with usb 2.0/firewire ports.
In looking at the topics here I came across the link about taping the 3 and 11 pins on the video card. Even though the card I have is 4x/2x not 8x I thought I'd give it a shot. That did not work either.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I don't wish to sound redundant here, but I've been reviewing the vendor's page:
It's OK- I don't mind beating this dead horse....
The maker says such to protect themselves from possible claims that may arise due to over loaded systems and power problems when their card is installed in said system.
Of course, 300w would be nice, but they didn't even specify the PSU rating a couple years ago. The Sawtooth, with it's 237w PSU, used to be listed as a compatible machine for the 9800...... They just didn't consider how far a Sawtooth might be modded.
Within reason, the early G4's (Sawtooths) are capable of using the Radeon 9800 Pro. The GE has the same 338w PSU as the DA (they are interchangeable), so there is plenty of power for the 9800.
One thing to remember, the requirements of the ADC port of the AGP slot are removed by using a non ADC card. This really changes the calculations of the power available.
It's kinda' a long post, but, if you care to get ALL the details, check the following:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7065653&#7065653
I think you'll be satisfied with the explanation.......
Which leaves your second, and very appropriate, point.
The main enemy of all, though, isn't power. Heat is the biggest concern.
Reducing heat/increasing cooling by using a third party fan on the 9800 is highly recommended. The 9800 is a hot card, and the stock fan is prone to early failure.
Adding additional cooling to remove the extra heat produced by the 9800, by using an exausting PCI fan, will also help the PSU provide adequate voltage to the system, by reducing the amount of hot air moving out of the PSU.
Super heated air moving through the PSU reduces the cooling ability of the PSU. A hot PSU doesn't produce reliable power.
So, add the 9800, add some cooling, and enjoy!

  • What is the correct installation sequence for my ATI Radeon 9800 PRO MAC AGP 128MB into my Quicksilver 867 G4?

    Hi.
I just got my used ATI Radeon 9800 PRO MAC AGP 128MB card.
What is the correct installation sequence into my Quicksilver 867 G4 running 10.4.11 on one drive 10.5 on another?
The original NVIDIA GeForce2 MX - 32MB SDRAM went bust.
Is the driver build in 10.4?
Do I remove the old driver?
If I need to install the driver that came with it, (10.3.6) should the card be installed first?
    What about firmware updates?
Thank you for all your time and patience.

  • PT 880 & Radeon 9800 pro - heavy AGP Voltage

    Hello!
I'm worrying for my AGP voltage witch is 1,75 V (in red in core Center).
I cannot change it in Core Center though (OK- and save) because after
reboot it goes back to 1,75 V. My two friends who got similar computers
have the same problem. The difference is that I've Sapphire's and they
    have Club 3D's graphic cards.
What to do - any ideas?

    Hello!
After spending some hours reading around in this forum I've realized
that Core Center isn't that good. I'll certainly remove it. I've had some
problems with hang-ups on my computer but my friends haven't experience
this yet. I thought it was due to old drivers but realized it probably caused by
Core Center. Thank god for this forum and all you guys with answers.

  • MSI 9800 PRO - Theatre Clone mode Not Active!!!

    Hi...
MY monitor is wide and icons  seems on TV when i drag them to the right side..so I want to activate Theatre Clone MOde .but it is inactive....
    How wil i activate?

What Bas said about 30+ amps on the 12v rail does have merit. Even if you don't use it now there may come a time when you want to upgrade the system and certainly you won't want to buy yet another PSU then. A High end vid card now takes almost as much as the CPU to operate. Now days the 12v rail is the most important. Past systems regulated everything off the 5v railk and 12v was used mostly for powering drive motors. Now though the MB's use the 12v line to regulate all the voltages for the CPU, Chipset and other features as does the Vid cards. 3.3 volt lines are used for memory so we hardly use any 5v nowdays.
You have an older viod card and that does not eat much 12v but if you upgrade the most likely peice will be the vid card. You could go through this whole thing all over again if you are not careful to plan for that now with a new PSU purchase.
If the computer shop gives you a bunch of bull about power needs havbe them stop by the forum and we can help set them straight on this. There is more than enough data from MSI and historical data here that suggests that 16a on the 12v rail is certainly not enough. Hey I am not trying to sell you anything. I am just trying to help you get it right. The computer shop is the one trying to sell you something we just feel they are selling the wrong junk.

  • My MacBook Pro keeps freezing and not responding correctly.

Okay, so yesterday I finished FaceTiming a friend and I closed my MacBook Pro like I normally do so it can sleep on my account. But when I open it, it keeps crashing (like it shows the screen and then for like 15 seconds it shows a gray screen and then back to the desktop background) and its not responding as fast as it normally does. It doesn't even show the dock where Safari and FaceTime and iTunes is. But when I go to the Guest User account, it all works fine. I don't know if I've been hacked or not but I would really appreciate it if someone has found the solution to this problem. Thank you so very much for trying to solve it in advance and Happy Holidays.

First, while in pro, the program crashes when I click on a video clip in the Lib to view it in the monitor.
Second, I tried to update to the program hoping to correct the first issue, but the update returns the error "installation unsuccessful" for unknown reasons.

  • Macbook pro retina heating and not turning on

So I got my new macbook retina 15 inch around 4 weeks ago and it has been working fine, next day
I got it plugged and nothing, the screen just didnt start it was all black, so I plug the charger and the indicator
just seem fine but after 1 hour this computer has a massive heat all over the keyboard and the backplate where
the battery is, I guess, so I disconnect everything but the heat starts to get even hotter so Im kinda worried the thing
is going to blow etc etc, that was around 7 pm, So i went out and let it cool a bit, came a few hours later and bam
there it is working again, just plain weird behavior of this new machine so I wonder what the heck happened?
what am I to expect again from this? anyone had this before, and is there some kind of app to monitor
the heat levels or make a complete diagnostic?
thanks in advance if you might know something useful.
    Andrew.

You shouldn't have to even worry about something like this. Document what happened and take it back to Apple immediately and make them fix it.

  • 9800 Pro and hot ram . . .

I had a 9800 Pro with the iceberq4 fan in my MDD and the top ram stick was getting very hot. I put a fan behind it in the back to expel air and also a pci fan. Still really did not help. So I switched back to a 9800xt which exhausts the hot air above the optical tray and drilled a front hole in the speaker area for a 80mm fan run at low speed and used a pci slot fan to expel the air.
Who has been running a 9800 Pro long term and not had any issues with the ram due to over heating? The alternative might be to use 2 1gig sticks instead of 4 512 sticks. Anyways . . . post up!

Only running three sticks - 2x512's and a 256, leaving the slot nearest the video card open. My 9800 has the stock fan and I added a PCI-slot fan at the top of the case. I also sandwiched a fan between the back of the case and the CPU cooling fins. Makes a little more noise than before, but has kept cool enough to be running continuously for the past 2+ years with no issues. Sadly, the Iceberq 4's have disappeared as near as I can tell and the newer models won't fit in just right - the orientation of the card won't let you use the models that exhaust through a PCI slot.

  • Dead Radeon 9800 Pro  please help

    Hi,
I think my ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128M AGP graphics card in my early Powermac g5 dual 2G is dying/dead. Looks like it's dropping a bit somewhere as I have blocks of coloured lines all over the screen. THis makes the machine unusable at 1900 x 1200 millions of colours and just about readable if I drop to 256 colours I have tried reseating the board after cleaning it (it was dirty). The fan is still working. I've tried booting from another disk and also driving my Dell flatscreen monitor using the DVI - VGA converter, so eliminating the digital cable and the monitor DVI input from the equation.
My question is this, where can I get a suitable replacement card? I've seen a ATI Radeon™ 9800 PRO Mac Special Edition 256mb AGP for sale on ebay which states it's AGP x 8 - would this work? Any other suggestions for a suitable reasonably priced replacement? I mainly use the machine for photo editing, and have my monitor/printer colour calibrated using a spyder and I only need to connect one monitor. The old card did allow me to turn the monitor through 90 degrees, but I never used the feature.
Another question - could I temporarily use the AGP card from my old G4 500 in the G5 - its an ATI Rage Pro 128 I believe?
    THanks in anticipation.

    Hi Alan,
Thanks for the info, and I feel I should add further to this discussion regarding my own dead card.
What was a hard fault (with similar symptoms to the screenshots shown in Alan's link) despite several attempts to reseat the card (after cleaning it - there was a lot of dust in the fan assy) isn't so hard any more. After fitting the card I bought on ebay and discovering it was DOA, I reinstalled my old card, to discover that it worked again all ok - for about a day and half, then went bad again. Further fiddling around with it revealed that sometimes, reseating it will make it work for variable lengths of time. It's currently faulty and I'm writing this in 256 colour mode with bands of lines down only part of the screen. Once or twice, the card has suddenly started working again without reseating it, but only for about an hour.
The fan on the card is spinning (and was spinning even when very dusty). The fault doesn't seem to be strictly temperature related as leaving the machine powered off in a chilly office overnight oer even for a couple of days has so far, never resulted in the card working on power up - unless it's been reseated first. Also, the card doesn't always go faulty when the mac is working hard and the exhaust fans are blowing out lots of hot air.
I'm wondering if the scenario is more likely to be a solder joint that went bad when the card was running with a dirty fan (ie caused by slight overheating) and is now affected by movement (reseating) & vibration when the machine is in use? Either that or it's the dreaded "tin-pest" disease caused by use of lead-free solder where minute whiskers of tin can "grow" and short across nearby tracks casuing hard to find intermittant faults on circuit boards.

  • Ati Radeon 9800 Pro won't start up mac!

I just got this Ati Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB AGP from ebay and installed it promptly but my mac just won't start up!
I tried placing back my existing nvidia card and it booted up fine. Am i being ripped off with a PC version or something? I noticed there's a extra piece of chip to insert from my old nvdia card but not the new ati one.
But i checked on the net and found that the ati radeon 9800 mac cards also do not have that extra chip.
    Here's a URL of the card i bought. (http://i4.ebayimg.com/01/i/000/da/aa/1988_1.JPG)
Any idea or advice guys? Thanks in advance.

    Hi-
The image is just a stock image from ATI, of a 9800 Pro- which one is impossible to tell.
Since you are calling the card a 256mb version, the card is a PC card (unless it,s blue). It was advertised as a Mac card? If so, it has been flashed. BUT, if it is an 8x AGP card, it needs pins #3 and #11 taped to work in your 4x AGP QS. See this article.
Do you have the eBay link to the card that you bought (the listing)?
