K8T FIS2R BIOS 1.8 cannot find NVRAM

Hello,
Today I flashed my BIOS to version 1.8. After flashing (using the DOS methode) I couldn't enter the CMOS setup 8 out of 10 times anymore. This happens before on my system and after a load BIOS defaults and reconfiguring it seems stable, again.
However! One difference got my attention. During POST now I get: Checking NVRAM.. NO NVRAM
I seems to me this BIOS version search for NVRAM at a wrong offset. So clearing the NVRAM is no option anymore.
Does anyone else with 1.8 notist this?
For now I switched back to 1.7. This is (for me) still the most stable version ever.

Hi CCheney and others,
I saw the same address thing while flashing. This is some correspondence to/from MSI (my compliments for there fast response):
Hello sir/madam,
Yes, my system did boot up fine. At least I didn't discover any strang behavior.
I flashed in the 1.8 version again to to a little more testing, including the options you suggested me to try. All with the same result. System keeps booting up without problems.
But while reflashing I notisted the possible cause of the 'problem' I thought allready knew:
When flashing version 1.7 and below the NVRAM is asumed or found at address: 00010000H
When flashing version 1.8 the NVRAM is asumed or found at address 00020000H.
Although it seems my system is running fine I can imagine that I will get problems if the NVRAM needs to be cleared in the future.
Can you confirm this? Or is there another explanation?
With kind regards,
Dear Sir/Madam ,
Thank you for contacting MSI Technical Support.
Abbreviation of Non-Volatile Random Access Memory, a type of memory that retains its contents when power is turned off. One type of NVRAM is SRAM that is made non-volatile by connecting it to a constant power source such as a battery. Another type of NVRAM uses EEPROM chips to save its contents when power is turned off. In this case, NVRAM is composed of a combination of SRAM and EEPROM chips. Checking NVRAM refers to  NVRAM is being checked to see if it is valid.
Can the system boot up normally after the message"Checking NVRAM ...No NVRAM" showed? Could you please refer to below suggestions to check it again?
1)clear CMOS .
2)Remove these unnecessary device only leaving CPU, memory, power supply ,VGA card and HDD.
3)Check the CMOS battery.
Thanks for your supporting MSI product. Please feel free to let us know if you still have any further issues or inquires.
Best regards,
MSI Technical Support

  • BIOS-GPT grub cannot find the root device in LVM setup

    Greetings Arch Linux Community,
    Recently I started my journey of installing Arch Linux on my VMware Workstation.
    I successfully installed the non-LVM instance not long before I noticed the advantages of LVM, then I just started a new Arch Linux setup with LVM.
    However, after following the Beginners' Guide and LVM Guide carefully, I ran into a problem on boot that I cannot solve by myself due to my poor knowledge on boot/grub.
    Here is the error message:
    ERROR: device '4b28d500-8ed3-4fe5-ad26-97fbb01f979b' not found. Skipping fsck
    ERROR: Unable to find root device '4b28d500-8ed3-4fe5-ad26-97fbb01f979b'
    The error message itself is pretty clear; saying that the root device specified by my grub.cfg cannot be found and thus cannot be loaded.
    However, I'm 100% sure that the device is actually there and just for some reason grub cannot see it.
    Below please see the info from lsblk, pvdisplay, vgdisplay, lvdisplay, and some related info from fstab, grub.cfg and mkinitcpio.conf:

    Sorry, im newbie ( dont take my advice seriously ), but im very curious about his, because once i couldnt install grub as well so i went for syslinux instead , and i know i will have one more fresh install of arch to do, so im curious
    Hi Efka, I used grub-install and specified "/dev/sda" for argument. What I understand is that the sda is the identifier for the hard disk where all the sdaX reside. And if you look into the output of my lsblk, you will see that there is one partition sda1 that has no filetype, label and UUID on display; that is actually the bios boot partition where, as I understand, the grub code embeds itself.
    We can have different partition scheme to deploy and having a separate partition for /boot is just my personal preference ans it should work as well.

  • Using K7T266 Pro2, Cannot find BIOS Protection function.

    I am using K7T266 Pro2 (MS-6380 v2.0) with BIOS update 3.70. I was reading the manual and suddenly I found a interesting function “BIOS Protection”, quote from manual:
    Quote
    This function protects the BIOS from accidental corruption by unauthorized users or computer viruses. When enabled, the BIOS’ data cannot be changed when attempting to update the BIOS with a Flash utility. To successfully update the BIOS, you’ll need to disable this Flash BIOS
    This is a really useful function but the problem is that I cannot find it! According to the manual it should be in the Advanced Chipset Features section, below the “PCI Delay Transaction” function. But when I go to my BIOS setup there is nothing below the “PCI Delay Transaction” function. And so I ask my self “where is the BIOS Protection function?”, I checked threw all the other sections but I could not find it… please help me, where is this function? Doesn't it include in the new BIOS update 3.70? Is anyone experiencing the same thing?

    I'm assuming that by this you mean it does not support a network boot?
    The reason why I say this is that I recently restored my K7T266 PRO2-RU BIOS Rev. 3.7 using Symantec Ghost Corp. Edition (MultiCast Server).  The Ghost image was stored on a remote machine, all that was needed was a floppy disk which was simple enough to configure using the wizard.  I had no problems -  BUT that doesn't mean the thing (my motherboard) isn't flakey as hell though.

    I don't see any messages of loading nvidia ("NVRM") or nouveau. Are you sure that you have installed a module that is compatible with your current kernel?
    You'll also need to patch your ACPI handle or the nouveau/nvidia driver will refuse to load at all, see https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/bbswitch/issues/2 (this is specific to some machines, your Lenovo G580 machine included)

  • X1 Carbon Touch Fingerprint reader 'cannot find fingerprint sensor device' e7210005

    Hi all,
    I've spent far too long trying to solve this by myself, and need to reach out to someone who might have resolved this issue. I've read tons of similar questions online, and rebooted dozens of times after trying many different things.
    I have a Carbon Touch 3444-CUU that can't see it's fingerprint reader. It used to work when brand new, but after lots of lenovo and windows updates, it now does not:
    I am on Windows 8.1, with all updates.
    No problems in device manager.
    Touchchip Fingerprint Coprocessor (WBF advanced mode) installed under Biometric devices fine.
    Power management set to _not_ turn off device to save power.
    The bios is 2.61.
    I suspect the problem is very low-level, because even the BIOS cannot find device when trying to set it up.
    If I have the lates BIOS, but it can't see the device - what can I do?
    Thanks everyone..
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    BleachedWhale......which settings you have changed in the BIOS......
    It is possible to work-around the issue, but some manual steps are needed:
    1. delete "smihlp.sys" from "c:\program files\thinkvantage fingerprint software"
    2. run "services.msc" and stop the service "Windows Biometric Service"
    3. delete the file "031D23AD-15AF-4e25-B7B3-DE34893097ED.DAT" from "c:\Windows\system32\WinBioDatabase"
    4. reboot the computer (important!!)
    5. now try to enroll some fingers
    This should make it possible to enroll fingerprint and use it to log into Windows, until the bug can be fixed in some future version of BIOS and/or Fingerprint software.
    Best regards from Germany....

  • K7N2 Delta2 :: Onboard NIC Once Flawless, Now cannot find Network

    Hello, and thank you for reading my Support Query!
    Heres the Deal. For the past Couple of Months, I've had little to no problems with my K7N2D2. Everything worked to my expectations.
    Until Last Night, was online, and downloading some Bittorrent Files when all my connections suddenly drop'd from Maximum to Nothing.
    First Thought : ADSL Dropped or Router Stalled...  So, I Restart ze Modem, Restart the Hub. All their Flashes go Normally, and I wait a few moments for everything to Synch Up. Then Tried refreshing google.com .. to No Avail, its -instantly- reporting it cannot find the address, yadda yadda.
    2nd Thought : Oh, maybe Verizon's Service was interrupted... But No, I walk into the other room, where my Bro's Comp is at, and the Net is Fully Functional and Online. [ He also has a K7N2-D2 MB.. The Comp which im typing at right now]
    Weirdness : I Cannot Connect to the Routers IP Address. I Cannot even Connect to any other the computers on the Network. [ This all Used to Work Perfectly, Small Home Network of 3 Comps, With Lots of Read Only Shared Folders, for Music / Movies ]
    Continued Wierdness : Everything in the Device Manager seems to Say everything is in perfect working Order, and I Can Ping Local Address [ 127.0.0.1 ] With No Problem. I Tried Pinging the Router, but it couldnt find Destination?
    ipconfig/all  Reports that, DHCP is Enabled, AutoConfig is Enabled, but it cant find the Gateway or DHCP Server.
    What is going on? Did I Fry the NIC with too Many Torrents?
    I Tried Hooking up a Old D-Link NIC Card I've had around for awhile, Not Sure why but it didnt want to Work.. Maybe cuzz its been sitting in storage for years.
    Help is greatly appreciated, Is there anyway I Can run a diagnostic on the Onboard NIC? Yarr.

    Hi all.
    I'm new here, but have to write, coz I have exactly the same problem, like Nookovski.
    I'm using my K7N2 D2platinum for more than 1 years, without any problem, using the onboard LAN for internet (connected to ADSL cable modem), and another Ethernet card for internal LAN.
    2 days ago, I was playing network game with friends, when suddenly my connection was lost. I tried to reach homepages, but no avail. Try to ping some common addresses, nothing happens, 100% lost.
    I rebooted, and saw, that my ip address for netconnection changed to 163... etc. This is weird, coz originally my ISP always give some 80... etc from DHCP.
    I tried renew my ip, no success.
    Called my ISP, they said, they can see my modem, but can't see my PC. I have to plug the cable to my another ethernet card for a moment - I did it, and they saw my pc in this case. They adviced to reinstall my onboard NIC driver. OK, perhaps later.
    After all, I found an old Ethernet card (Realtek family) in my case, so I installed it. After a quick reboot my netconnection was fine through this new card. So no network problem on ISP side, there is something with my onboard LAN.
    I tried to uninstall / remove the driver from hardware settings panel, but the window freezes. If I reboot in safe mode, and try to remove again, windows says : cannot remove, device is needed for operation. (or smth like this)
    I tried reinstall LAN components from the latest MSI driverset, but nothing changed. I think it cannot overwrite the old (damaged?) files.
    Now I'm using 2 PCI eth.card, one to connect with another PC, and one for internet. I disabled the onboard LAN from bios. But this is annoying, I don't understand  what happend from one minute to another, and I would like to use my integrated NIC!
    I found some posts here, advising to set the MAC address in bios manually, regarding to a sticker on the mobo, but I don't have such an option in BIOS.
    What should I do now? Are there any solution?
    Thanx!

    Check Finderr->Preferences->General and ensure that HDs are selected for display. If so and they still don't, Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, and see if that does the trick.

  • 1.7 Fis2r Bios

    within the update BIOS file i dloaded there is a "HOW TO FLASH BIOS.doc" but i do not know which section to follow - AMI or AWARD or (i guess) NON_FAT32 i need to know because i am trying to get my 2*512 OCZ 3700EB to work

    Hi
    The Via board, thats the K8t FIS2R and FSRs use AMI Bios.
    Easiest way is to make a floppy with live update, then reboot with it in drive A:. BUT REMEMBER TO DISABLE THE BOOT VIRUS PROTECTION IN THE STANDARD CMOS FEATURES IN BIOS.
    The ready made bios/rescue disks are on  http://www.M_M.ME.UK/macs use download list and AMD logo.  Read the text, it tells you to overwrite all files EXCEPT the COMMAND.COM, to a formatted Ms Dos Startup disk(tick the item in format)
    However, I do not think the bios upgrade will help the RAM, I am not sure that RAM is compatable with this board, is it on the MSI list, or in the stickies at top.
    DO NOT FLASH if you are not sure, and if the comp is having problems with mem, you will corrupt the bios, and make mobo useless, get an acceptable ram before flashing. Even an old DDR2100 is better, the cheaper and more basic the RAM the better. RAM must be UNregistered and UNbuffered, NON ECC
    Cheers

  • GRUB Cannot Find chainload

    I am currently trying to dual boot Windows 8 and Arch Linux. I have Windows 8 installed on my first boot device and Arch installed as per the Beginner's Wiki to my second boot device (both SSD's, sdb and sdc, respectively).
    lsblk:
    sda [RAID controlled by dedicated card]
    sda1  128M
    sda2  3.7T
    sdb
    sdb1  300M
    sdb2  100M
    sdb3  128M
    sdb4  232.4G
    sdc
    sdc1  500M
    sdc2  20G /
    sdc3  10G /var
    sdc4  200G /home
    sdc5  235.3G  (spare)
    Everything appears to be installed and configured correctly, and I have installed GRUB and gummiboot after GRUB did not work. This was partly do to me having to change some bios settings so that secure boot was disabled, or at least set to "Other OS". At an earlier point I actually wiped my /boot and re-installed Arch (which I believe only replaced missing files) and re-installed grub and re-generated the configuration file.
    Now, the GRUB menu shows properly on boot with my Arch and Windows entries and I am able to boot into Arch fine. However, now when I select MS Windows, Grub tells me that it cannot find the chainload command. Is it supposed to be just 'chain', perhaps?
    In my /etc/grub.d/40_custom file I added two menu entries, one for Arch Linux and one for MS Windows.
    menuentry "Arch Linux" {
        set root=(hd2,2)
        linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux
        initrd /boot/initrd.img
    # This was added as per the advice at: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … gpt-system
    menuentry "MS Windows" {
        insmod part_gpt
        insmod search_fs_uuid
        insmod ntfs
        insmod chain
        search --fs-uuid 3A781C97781C544B --set=root --hint-bios=hd1,gpt4 --hint-efi=hd1,gpt4 --hint-baremetal=ahci1,gpt4
        chainload (${root})/Windows/Boot/EFI/bootmgfw.efi
    What could this be?
    Thank you for any and all suggestions!!

    I'm not opposed to gummiboot, like I said it was my first choice, but as I encountered problems I took the guide advice and tried GRUB. If I can get GRUB to work and it increases my understanding, I would be all for it. I'm definitely familiar with Linux, but I don't have extensive experience with GRUB and EFI.
    What is the best way to use gummiboot? Uninstall GRUB or install them side-by-side?

  • Solaris 10 x86 b72 "Cannot find boot.bin" booting from SCSI.

    Hello,
    After several gyrations of installation attempts and dealing with early BIOS PnP issues, I've finally managed to get Solaris 10 x86 installed on an old dual P2 333Mhz system. So far the system is running flawlessly, but I'm still not able to boot directly off the SCSI disk. The primary boot handler is erroring out that it cannot find boot.bin.
    I can boot fine off of the IDE CD drive and the floppy (currently pointed to autoboot into the SCSI disk as a workaround). But when I try to boot directly off the SCSI drive, I get the error from the Solaris boot manager that it "Cannot find boot.bin".
    I have booted off the CD & Floppy and compared the /boot files from both the CD & floppy, but I cannot find any difference that would prevent the primary boot loader from finding boot.bin. I've even compared files to make sure they were not corrupt, and even force re-installed the boot handlers, and manually partioning, always with the same results. I've also tried both enabling and disabling the DOS >1G translation of the Adaptec SCSI BIOS with no change. I can't find any reason that the boot loader is not seeing boot.bin, or that the file is corrupt in any way (even after several wipe and install attempts).
    My System is:
    Supermicro P6DLS dual Pentium II 333MHz & 512MB RAM, w/ Adaptec 7880 SCSI-UW and IDE (whopping UltraDMA 33) interfaces.
    CD/DVD reader is configured as the secondary master (moved from primary master in an attempt to fix boot problem)
    HD is a 16GB UW SCSI disk.
    (Other particulars ommited unless someone feels they are relevant to the boot process).
    The system came to me with Windows 2000 installed and functioning. I also had Fedora Core 3 installed, both with no boot problems of the SCSI disk. (Although FC3 would not see the second processor even with the canned SMP kernel).
    This system is intended to replace a Fedora Core 3 system to be a multi-purpose firewall gateway & proxy server and I'm really liking the performance I'm seeing with Solaris 10 on this system but would like it to be able to go through a normal boot process and not have to depend on a floppy as a boot device to get started.
    Anyone have any ideas why the Solaris x86 boot loaders think that they cannot find boot.bin when the full /boot partion is intact?
    TIA,
    -Troy

    I'm getting the same problem trying to install
    Solaris 10 in VMware from DVD.
    It brings up the Solaris Primary Boot Subsystem, so
    it appears to be reading fine, but the only thing
    that happens is I get the Cannot find boot.bin
    error.Hmm, the "Cannot find boot.bin." message comes from the
    CD/DVD's boot code, which is contained in the first 16 sectors
    of the media.
    The boot.bin file is supposed to be read from the Solaris UFS
    slice, which starts at 512 byte block #5151360 (or 2048 byte
    dvd sector #1287840). This a byte offset of ~2.6 GBytes.
    Maybe an issue with your system's bios not being able to read
    DVD media > 2GB, during DVD boot?
    Or a problem with burning the DVD media? Maybe some
    "smart" PC DVD burning software has decided only to record
    the 2.6 GB ISO filesystem, and the 100 MB Solaris UFS
    filesystem that follows the ISO filesystem is missing on the DVD?
    Or a 2GB filesize issue while burning the DVD?
    Do you have a pc / windows utility that can print some information
    about the S10 DVD media, especially the size of that DVD?
    Maybe your CD/DVD recording software?
    The original S10 GA x86 DVD image has a size of 2732195840
    bytes, or 1334080 2K DVD blocks.

  • Satellite A65-S126: Cannot find the RTC battery

    I have my machine turn down but cannot find the batteries to replace them. Based on Toshiba support the P/N are P000444350 but there is no such item in the case that I can see. Any ideas..?
    Even the disassembly manuals online do not show them.
    I know there must be something in here.
    Also according to the operation manual these batteries take power from the main battery.
    Since my main battery is completely dead, would this account for the time snyc issue I'm having with the RTC batteries; since they are not getting power to recharge??

    Sorry for my misunderstanding but what battery do you mean exactly.
    Do you mean the main battery or the tiny RTC battery which is fixed on the motherboard?!
    > Also according to the operation manual these batteries take power from the main battery.
    This is not exactly right.
    The RTC battery provides power to the motherboard therewith the internal clock and the BIOS can run 24/7.
    It does no matter if the main battery is empty. The RTC should provide the power to motherboard for several times also if the main battery is empty.
    If the RTC battery is empty the motherboard cannot be provided with power and the internal clock, BIOS will be reset.
    In such case you have to connect the main battery and the AC adaptor to the notebook and let the battery charge for about 12 hours.
    For details please check the user manual -> battery chapter

  • Bitlocker "The system cannot find the file specified"

    I am trying to get Bitlocker working on the C: drive of a Dell Venue 11 (5130) 32bit, running Windows 8.1Update Enterprise. I click Turn on BitLocker and the system checks the perrequisites and is happy. Then I type in a PIN (6 numbers) and confirm it and
    hit Set PIN. At this point it fails with a message saying "The system cannot find the file specified".
    I am an Admin on the machine. TPM is working fine. GPO is not setting either BitLocker or TPM to store on the AD DS. Secure Boot is turned on in BIOS. Plus I've tried the reverse of all of these.
    I've spent hours reading through web articles without any joy, so I'm hoping someone can give me a pointer. Please.

    Hi guys,
    Almost have the same problem, and still not able to solve it now [despite lots of search].
    I used to have BitLocker working on my laptop, but I removed it before cloning [with Paragon] my SSD to a new and bigger one. When I replaced the SSD the system did not boot, and I had to create a new BCD store by copying UEFI boot files from the system
    directory on fix the UEFI boot partition. When the boot problem was fixed, I used gParted to extend my C: partition and delete useless recovery partitons at the end of the drive. So actual partitioning is as follow [as per Diskpart]:
      Partition ###   Type                Size         Offset
      Partition 1         Recovery         500 MB   1024 KB
      Partition 2         System            300 MB    501 MB
      Partition 3         Reserved         128 MB    801 MB
      Partition 4         Primary            930 GB    929 MB
    So I guess I made something wrong when I tried to repair the UEFI boot partition... Well, now it boots correctly, but I can't enable BitLocker anymore and get the not-so-explicit "The system cannot find the file specified" error you had. Here is
    what I get with a "bcdedit.exe /enum ALL":

    I also enabled Fast Bios and ACHI Mode in my BIOS [along with enabling Secure Boot on UEFI mode], as well as tried to clear TPM and reinitialize it, but that didn't change anything. And thanks to your posts I had a look to C:\Windows\System32\Recovery\ReAgent.xml
    but it does not seem to be populated with the any GUIDs:

  • [SOLVED] Installing on ZFS root: "ZFS: cannot find bootfs" on boot.

    I have been experimenting with ZFS filesystems on external HDDs for some time now to get more comfortable with using ZFS in the hopes of one day reinstalling my system on a ZFS root.
    Today, I tried installing a system on an USB external HDD, as my first attempt to install on ZFS (I wanted to try in a safe, disposable environment before I try this on my main system).
    My partition configuration (from gdisk):
    Command (? for help): p
    Disk /dev/sdb: 3907024896 sectors, 1.8 TiB
    Logical sector size: 512 bytes
    Disk identifier (GUID): 2FAE5B61-CCEF-4E1E-A81F-97C8406A07BB
    Partition table holds up to 128 entries
    First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 3907024862
    Partitions will be aligned on 8-sector boundaries
    Total free space is 0 sectors (0 bytes)
    Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name
    1 34 2047 1007.0 KiB EF02 BIOS boot partition
    2 2048 264191 128.0 MiB 8300 Linux filesystem
    3 264192 3902828543 1.8 TiB BF00 Solaris root
    4 3902828544 3907024862 2.0 GiB 8300 Linux filesystem
    Partition #1 is for grub, obviously. Partition #2 is an ext2 partition that I mount on /boot in the new system. Partition #3 is where I make my ZFS pool.
    Partition #4 is an ext4 filesystem containing another minimal Arch system for recovery and setup purposes. GRUB is installed on the other system on partition #4, not in the new ZFS system.
    I let grub-mkconfig generate a config file from the system on partition #4 to boot that. Then, I manually edited the generated grub.cfg file to add this menu entry for my ZFS system:
    menuentry 'ZFS BOOT' --class arch --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
    load_video
    set gfxpayload=keep
    insmod gzio
    insmod part_gpt
    insmod ext2
    set root='hd0,gpt2'
    echo 'Loading Linux core repo kernel ...'
    linux /vmlinuz-linux zfs=bootfs zfs_force=1 rw quiet
    echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    My ZFS configuration:
    # zpool list
    NAME SIZE ALLOC FREE CAP DEDUP HEALTH ALTROOT
    External2TB 1.81T 6.06G 1.81T 0% 1.00x ONLINE -
    # zpool status :(

    scan: none requested
    config:

    # zpool get bootfs

    External2TB/PacmanCache 5.77G 1.77T 5.77G /var/cache/pacman/pkg
    External2TB/Swap 8.50G 1.78T 20K -
    The reason for the above configuration is that after I get this system to work, I want to install a second system in the same zpool on a different dataset, and have them share a pacman cache.
    GRUB "boots" successfully, in that it loads the kernel and the initramfs as expected from the 2nd GPT partition. The problem is that the kernel does not load the ZFS:
    ERROR: device '' not found. Skipping fsck.
    ZFS: Cannot find bootfs.
    ERROR: Failed to mount the real root device.
    Bailing out, you are on your own. Good luck.
    and I am left in busybox in the initramfs.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Also, here is my /etc/fstab in the new system:
    # External2TB/ArchSystemMain
    #External2TB/ArchSystemMain / zfs rw,relatime,xattr 0 0
    # External2TB/PacmanCache
    #External2TB/PacmanCache /var/cache/pacman/pkg zfs rw,relatime,xattr 0 0
    UUID=8b7639e2-c858-4ff6-b1d4-7db9a393578f /boot ext4 rw,relatime 0 2
    UUID=7a37363e-9adf-4b4c-adfc-621402456c55 none swap defaults 0 0
    I also tried to boot using "zfs=External2TB/ArchSystemMain" in the kernel options, since that was the more logical way to approach my intention of having multiple systems on different datasets. It would allow me to simply create separate grub menu entries for each, with different boot datasets in the kernel parameters. I also tried setting the mount points to "legacy" and uncommenting the zfs entries in my fstab above. That didn't work either and produced the same results, and that was why I decided to try to use "bootfs" (and maybe have a script for switching between the systems by changing the ZFS bootfs and mountpoints before reboot, reusing the same grub menuentry).
    Thanks in advance for any help.

    Sounds like a zpool.cache issue. I'm guessing your zpool.cache inside your arch-chroot is not up to date. So on boot the ZFS hook cannot find the bootfs. At least, that's what I assume the issue is, because of this line:
    ERROR: device '' not found. Skipping fsck.
    If your zpool.cache was populated, it would spit out something other than an empty string.
    Some assumptions:
    - You're using the ZFS packages provided by demizer (repository or AUR).
    - You're using the Arch Live ISO or some version of it.
    On cursory glance your configuration looks good. But verify anyway. Here are the steps you should follow to make sure your zpool.cache is correct and up to date:
    Outside arch-chroot:
    - Import pools (not using '-R') and verify the mountpoints.
    - Make a copy of the /etc/zfs/zpool.cache before you export any pools. Again, make a copy of the /etc/zfs/zpool.cache before you export any pools. The reason for this is once you export a pool the /etc/zfs/zpool.cache gets updated and removes any reference to the exported pool. This is likely the cause of your issue, as you would have an empty zpool.cache.
    - Import the pool containing your root filesystem using the '-R' flag, and mount /boot within.
    - Make sure to copy your updated zpool.cache to your arch-chroot environment.
    Inside arch-chroot:
    - Make sure your bootloader is configured properly (i.e. read 'mkinitcpio -H zfs').
    - Use the 'udev' hook and not the 'systemd' one in your mkinitcpio.conf. The zfs-utils package does not have a ported hook (as of 0.6.2_3.12.6-1).
    - Update your initramfs.
    Outside arch-chroot:
    - Unmount filesystems.
    - Export pools.
    - Reboot.
    Inside new system:
    - Make sure to update the hostid then rebuild your initramfs. Then you can drop the 'zfs_force=1'.
    Good luck. I enjoy root on ZFS myself. However, I wouldn't recommend swap on ZFS. Despite what the ZoL tracker says, I still ran into deadlocks on occasion (as of a month ago). However, I cannot say definitely the cause of the issue; but it resolved when I moved swap off ZFS to a dedicated partition.

  • Cannot find a Vector within a Vector

    Yo. Another noob askin about elements within a Vector.
    I'm working on a OOP project in BlueJ. First time doing so, so my code is still kinda procedural (with many listeners in the same document, etc etc)
    I'm creating a simulation of a 7-a-side football game. I have stored the players of each team into a vector (e.g Vector 'Chelsea' would contain 7 player objects).
    I've only created three teams for simplicity, and stored these three Vectors into another Vector called 'teams'.
    (the whole purpose of storing them in vectors btw, is so I don't have to pass many different player objects as arguments -
    i can just send the vector, and extract them within the Listener classes)
    I'm now in the new class (Start_game) and i've passed the vector to the class.
    When I use the statement:
                     if (teams.contains(Arsenal))
                                  +some code+
                     }I get the error message: cannot find variable 'Arsenal', when I try to compile the program.
    Here's the code for the first class:

    Ok. Here's my code at last. It comprises of three classes, each creating three different frames:
    Class 1:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.util.Vector;
    class class1
        public static void main(String[] param)
            Frame f = new TestFrame("test");
            f.setSize(600, 450);
            f.setVisible(true); // the first window is shown
    class TestFrame extends Frame
        public TestFrame(String title)
            super(title);
            setLayout(new FlowLayout());
            Button a = new Button("Click Me");
            add(a);
            a.addActionListener(new ButtonListener());
            addWindowListener(new WindowCloser());
        class ButtonListener implements ActionListener
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt)
                class2 c_instance = new class2();
                c_instance.mainfalse();
    Class 2:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.util.Vector;
    import javax.swing.BoxLayout;
    public class class2
        Vector teams;
        Vector Arsenal = new Vector(4);
            Player Adebayor = new Striker();
            Player Walcott = new Striker();
            Player Fabregas = new Midfielder();
            Player Denilson = new Midfielder();
            Player Gallas = new Defender();
            Player Eboue = new Defender();
            Player Lehmann = new Goalkeeper();
            // ONLY CREATING ONE TEAM FOR THE PURPOSE OF THE SIMPLIFIED PROGRAM
        public void mainfalse()
            Frame m_frame = new mainframe("class3", teams);
            m_frame.setSize(1200, 700);
            m_frame.setVisible(true);
        class mainframe extends Frame
            Vector teams;
            public mainframe(String title, Vector teams)
                super(title);
                this.teams = teams;
                setLayout(new FlowLayout());
                Arsenal.addElement(Adebayor);
                Arsenal.addElement(Walcott);
                Arsenal.addElement(Fabregas);
                Arsenal.addElement(Denilson);
                Arsenal.addElement(Gallas);
                Arsenal.addElement(Eboue);
                Arsenal.addElement(Lehmann);
                teams.addElement(Arsenal);
    // --------------- add START GAME button ----------------
                Button c = new Button("Start Game");
                add(c);
                c.addActionListener(new startgameListener(teams));
    // --------------- WINDOW CLOSER LISTENER ----------------
                addWindowListener(new WindowCloser());
        class startgameListener implements ActionListener
            Vector teams;
            public startgameListener(Vector t1)
                this.teams = t1;
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt)
                class3 c_instance1 = new class3();
                c_instance1.gVector(teams);
    }*... and Class 3:*
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.util.Vector;
    public class class3
        Vector teams;
        public void gVector(Vector t1)
            this.teams = t1;
            Frame main = new mainframe("Main Window", teams);
            main.setSize(1400, 900);
            main.setVisible(true);
        class mainframe extends Frame
            public mainframe(String title, Vector t1)
                super(title);
                setLayout(new FlowLayout());
                addWindowListener(new WindowCloser());
                Vector teams = t1;
                JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Hello and WELCOME to The FIRST, annual StickMan Footy!");
                if (teams.contains(Arsenal))
                    int t = teams.indexOf(Arsenal);
                    Vector Arsenal = (Vector) teams.elementAt(t);
                // getName() is a method declared in the Player class
                // the Player class is the superclass of the Striker class
    /*            if (teams.contains(Adebayor))
                And my error message after trying to compile Class 2, is "cannot find symbol - variable Arsenal".
    ........... help.

  • Cannot find boot record of WD Raptor on KT4

    Hello forum, this is my first post.
    I have been searching Google for a solution of my problem and found this forum. However, after searching this forum and reading quite a few threads I still could not find the solution. Here's my problem:
    I have a brand new WD Raptor 74 GB connected to serial 1 as a single drive. The mainboard is KT4 Ultra BSR. I have built an array by pressing ctrl-f at bootup. The only option was stripe and I have set the array (array 1) as bootable. I went into BIOS and set the array as first in boot order. Conclusion, the BIOS seems to detect my array and so far so good.
    I booted Win XP installation CD and pressed F6 to install the Promise drivers. I used the newest drivers which were downloaded from MSI yesterday. Installation detected my array so I created a new partition, formatted it and the installation program copied files to that partition. When copying was finished, the computer had to be restarted and it was supposed to boot from my harddrive where it copied the files. Now to the point of my problem: BIOS has detected my array and tried to boot, but it says that boot record could not be found!  I don't know whether Windows installation has failed to create a boot record or BIOS could not detect the boot record.
    I have checked the contents of C: by booting Win XP installation CD and gone into recovery mode. I would access C: and found the common files used for Windows bootup: boot.ini, ntldr, etc.
    So the required files are in place, but either the boot record does not exist or BIOS cannot find it. I wonder if anyone could give me any suggestion about how to solve this problem. I want to make my SATA drive bootable.
    Thanks in advance

    I have a DVD and DVD-RW connected to IDE2. I had a Hitachi HDD connected to IDE1, but it was removed before I ran Windows installation. The reason is because I want my SATA drive to have C: while having a HDD connected would mean the partions on that drive would occupy the C and D partition letters. I planned to attach the Hitachi after Windows installation has completed. BIOS has no problem detected my array, but when trying to boot from the array, the boot record cannot be found eventhough I have run the Windows installation which I thought would create the MBR automatically.
    Is there any way to make my array bootable? It has been boot-enabled in the SATA settings.
