K8t fis2r problems

the funniest thing happened to me.  I installed powerstrip by recommendation from a buddy (for those of you that don't know, it allows you to edit video settings easily, and apply them to certain programs exclusively).  when I started up the program and noted what it said my agp aperture size was, it said 128.  this is a problem, seeing as how I have an nvidia geforce 6800GT in my system.  I restarted, entered bios, and corrected the problem (set agp aperture to 256).  when I tried to restart the computer, I got nothing.  no POST whatsoever.  I do have an LED message on the back: the upper-left hand is green, the others are red.  my motherboard is a k8n neo-fis2r,  I have a gig of RAM (never had probs with it before), an athlon 3000+, and a thermaltake purepower 420 watt psu.  anyone know what is the problem and what I can do about it?

You should be running 1.9 Bios or newer with that rig. However I suspect that it is a quirk that a few other guys have had with running 256 Apature. I was able to do so but I have the bigger card and the cards that have been reported giving the same with the 256 apature have been mostly the GT's. Pull the power, reset the Bios and back off the apature a tad and see if it won't come back to like. If it does make sure your running the latest Bios and do click on bios setup Defaults when you get it back up again. Do not use the High Performance Defaults as that can give you some extra problems due to it overclocking some of the setting a tad and does not always work well for folks.

  • K8T FIS2R Raid Problems

Okay I got my RAID_0 stiping service up on my AMD K8 build using the Promise SATA RAID Controller (FastTrak 378) on the MSI K8T FIS2R. Okay so I get XP working and installed XP.
So I install the drivers for it already and when I do HDD Tach, I get uber low scores and a high CPU Utilization score. In Sandra I get like 1 HDD scores. Now how do I fix this mess up?
Something tells me I should have used the damn VIA SATA Raid Controller instead to have avioded this mess.
Can you help me folks? Thanks
Update: From looking at the VIA SATA bios/setup, it doesnt look like the VIA can do Raid 0...Am I right?
The Promise does have a separate BIOS and it's really easy to use. It has a AUTO service and has basically two options. Performance: Which is Raid 0 and Security: Which is Raid 1. So I choose Performance and then a box appears. That box says Create and Iniatize OR Create Only. So far I have chose both and they dont make a difference. After that, its pretty much done asking me to reboot. HOWEVER...In the manual...It says Step 4: You should FDSIK like it were a new drive.
What is FDISK? Did you have to FDISK? I thought Fdisk is in the MS DOS Disk and lets you partition the drive or something. Anyways, all I did was create the partition and then right after install Windows XP WITH the Raid controller drivers selected in XP setup...
    Any ideas?

I hooked up two more SATA drives on the Promise controller (not as boot) in RAID0 and low and behold, the scores were great! What is going on here?
You will get even better scores using 10k rpm sata drives WITHOUT raid.  Your boot drive is the only one which is ALWAYS live; therefore CPU utilisation from a second virtual drive will not effect benchmarks unless it is being accessed.
As I've said many times, software raid is a Bad Thing.

  • Cool'n'quiet FIS2R problem

I have the K8T FIS2R (6702) motherboard running a Sempron 64 3000+ cpu. I can't get the Cool'n'quiet to work. I use Windows XP Pro SP2. I have enabled Cool'n'quiet in the bios, the Sempron CPU driver from AMD's site are installed, but when I in Windows controlpanel click on Minimal powersetting, the computer just freeze right away. Any ideas?
The readme for tha AMD cpu drivers says it requires ACPI 2.0, but my bios/post under boot says it's running ACPI 1.0. Could that be the problem?

    Difficult one.
I think it has tot do with the multiplier not being able to throttle back. Mine goes from 10 to 5 @(close to) idle.
Run SuperPI (stressing ur CPU to the limit, so it won't throtle back) while selecting minimal power settings.
If it still crashes, u might consider raising the vCore, cus the other thing that happens is that the vCore will be lowered when C 'n Q kicks in, or RMA'ing the CPU.
If it keeps running post back plz.
    Good luck

  • Msi k8t neo fis2r problems part 3

sometimes when the computer is turned on it just turns the fans and leds on but doesnt boot up...
most of the time it loads up and i boot to the windows xp cd and i install the drivers for sata and then when it reaches the point of copying the files it will give me a bsod and say that there is a problem with the irql driver and then force me to shut the pc down..
sometimes it makes it past that and will begin to copy files onto the hard drive, like somehow the data is becoming corrupted..however it will start to say that the files cant copy randomly and it will allow me to retry..they will copy the 2nd time usually..i can keep hitting retry and it will usually go by..it gets to 30 something % and then crashes to bsod just giving me some random error..for some reason the files keep screwing up that go on the sata drive....I just replaced the old power supply that wasnt working with an antec true watt 430 watt power supply, so i know it isnt that..
i just cant figure out what the heck is going on..any help would be appreciated.my specs are
    "IRQ NOT EQUAL OR LESS"
    athlon 64 3000+ cpu
    msi k8t neo fis2r motherboard
    mushkin special cas 2.0 2-2-2-5 512 mb pc 3200
western digital 8mb cache 80 gb sata hard drive
sapphire radeon 9800 pro 128 mb 8x agp

fyi look an your cd sticker ity will show power, consumption, but they are way lower than you would think, hard drives, can be only 10 watts, less then some case lights , and fans, cd are  similar.. your video, is the biggy somewhere between 90~150 watts..yikes .next to the cpu..and the mobo can use 50 or so (not sure about new mobos)  not to mention the ram 1024 is @40 watts or so., dont forget about 25watts per pci card, not counting the sound card which can be double....
ergo the need for a big psu..
the combined total ratting on a psu is not the max number that the psu is rated, that is surge value.. so a 500 may only hold 400 sustained , and that will drop as the machine heats up, so in the end your 500 may onlyy pull 366 @50'c...

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R problems

I see a lot of post for all kinds of different problems with this motherboard. I just ordered one Newegg (before I discovered this forum). Did I make a mistake?

    cnkirby,
You made a good choice. I just received my K8T-Neo and Athlon 64 3000+ from Newegg last week. I took the dangerous route by replacing an existing MSI KT3 Ultra ARU board and maintaining my same WinXP system and hardware setup.
I should have disabled/removed my McAfee security programs before the switch, then things would have gone off without a hitch. I had big Windows XP problems until I did so. Once McAfee was gone (not and easy task after the switch) , The K8T-Neo rocked!
If you are doing a clean install of an OS, it should be a cinch.
I played it safe and bought memory from the K8T Neo's recommended list (Kingmax).
Regarding the power supply, I bought an Aspire X-Dreamer II case with the mobo and am using the supplied power supply which is only 350 watts. That's with 4 HDs! I've been running it pretty solid since Saturday with no ill effects. I'll be adding a Radeon 9800PRO this week, so that may have an effect on the power situation.

  • 865PE Neo2 -FIS2R Problems

    I purchased a brand new MSI 865PE Neo2-FISR along with a P4 2.4C(OEM), a Thermaltake Spark 5c cooler and a Corsair XMS Twinpack(TWINX512-3200C2PT) of DDR400 memory.
The install went fine, the system booted and ran very well right out of the box.  I installed the Live Update program from MSI and it updated itself.  I then used that utility to generate a BIOS flash/recovery disk to update the bios from 1.10 to 1.30.  The update worked fine and I rebooted the machine into Windows XP with no problems.
I then decided to do some tweaking in the new 1.3 BIOS.  After several unsuccessful memory/Dynamic Overclocking settings the system refused to boot.  I tried the Clear CMOS jumper to reset the defaults but it still would not boot.  I checked the D-Bracket, 3 red 1 green(lower right) which indicates that the video card is not initializing.  I attempted reseating the video card (a PNY Geforce4 TI4200) with no luck, I then replaced that card with a GeForce4 MX440 SE with no luck.  I tried four other video cards, 2 AGP and 2 PCI, with no success.
At this point I pulled the board out of the system and let it sit with the battery out of the board hoping that the BIOS would reset to default values.  I reinstalled the board with all the hardware and again the same D-Bracket error with no video generated.  I tried different arrangements of memory using the new Corsairs and various other DDR333 & DDR266 again no luck.
What is going on with this thing?  How could an errant timing change completely lock out the VGA card?  And why can I not clear the settings to allow the card to initialize?
This thing is getting RMA'd soon if I can't find an answer.
Anyone have any ideas or similiar troubles? X(

  • 865PE FIS2R Problems

I just built a system that includes a P4 2.4c cpu, the 865PE Neo FIS2R motherboard, Corsair 1 GB Twin 3200 C2 ram and an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro video card.
Most of my problems seemed to stem from the ATI card. But now, I can't even download Adobe Acrobat Reader from the web without getting file errors.  I tried installing a game and received similar errors.  I have already reinstalled Windows XP twice. I did flash bios to 1.3 and perhaps that is the source for the instability.
I've decreased my Bios setting to "SLOW" and upped the DDR voltage to 2.7.  I came across a thread that stated Corsair C2 ram had problems with the 865P chipset and that they recommended their LL modules.
I think I'm going to have to RMA both the MSI board and Corsair ram and replace them with more stable products.  I'm not really trying to overclock but chose this board from the many reviews I've read, including the review from Tom's Hardware Guide.  I'm even tempted just to buy the Intel board for stability purposes.
For the time being, I've dropped the memory clock to 333mhz and will probably try OCZ 3500 ram instead.

I'm not quite sure what you want in terms of system specs, but I'll state what I know.
    MB:  865PE NEO FIS2R BIOS 1.3
    CPU:  P4 2.4c (Not overclocked)
    FSB:  800mhz
Ram:  Corsair 3200 C2, 1gb @ 400 mhz.  Times as listed by SPD were 2.5-3-3-3-8.
    Bios:  Slow setting
OS:  Windows XP SP1 and with all recent updates
    Video:  ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
    HD:  WD 80 GB 7200rpm ATA100
The reason I would consider returning the Corsair ram is that I shouldn't have to step ram speed down to 333 mhz when it's supposed to run at 400 mhz.  I came across a thread on this website that Corsair has known issues with the 865/875 chipsets and that they recommend low latency ram instead of the C2 ram.  I've noticed OCZ 3500 seems to run well at 400mhz according to posts in the MB vs ram thread.
While installing Red Alert 2, I received several errors which said that there was a problem writing files.  I've had this harddrive for over 6 months now and never had a problem with the P3550 Asus P3B-f system I was using.
While doing the 2nd install of Windows XP, I had file errors as well.  This leads me to believe the RAM is unstable at 400 mhz because I don't see any other explanation for that behavior.
As to whether stepping down to 333 mhz has solved the problem,  I plan on doing another install of XP today now that I've stepped down the RAM and will hopefully end up with no errors.
When I first setup the system, the MB Bios was 1.0.  I didn't feel I was having problems until 1.3.  The reason I had done a 2nd reinstall of XP was related to the video card and once i found out Red Alert doesn't work with HT on, that issue seems solved.

  • K8T Neo: Problem at power-on...

    Hello!
Somehow I experience a strange startup-problem ... and I could really need some advice to resolve this issue as I'm out of ideas.
Last weekend I completely disassembled my rig for the annual "spring-time maintenance". I cleaned out dust, I cleaned the inside and outside of the case and I replaced my DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive with a LG DVD+/-R(W)/RAM drive. After everything was put together again I powered up my system - and it started to act strange.
Symptom: At power-on the system hangs at "Early Chipset Init" (D-Bracket 1-4: GRRR) and keeps on self-resetting. Several seconds (10-30) later the system starts to POST as expected and runs smoothly until ... power down.
During the night the system is completely disconnected from the power as it drains a lot of juice in stand-by (~12W for the rig + ~18W for several other external components like scanner, audio, ...).
What I've done so far to track down the error:
    - Reseated power connectors. Nope - problem persists.
    - Pulled all unnecessary components (just MoBo, CPU, RAM, GFX-card, Keyb). Nope - same prob.
    - Pulled all memory sticks, left only one in the slot (and tried every other one). Nope - same prob.
    - Cleared CMOS - Nope - same prob.
    - Ran memtest86+. Showed no errors after 10+ passes.
Now I'm out of ideas ... except for the power-on problem the system runs just fine as before. No crashes, no malfunctions, no nothing.
    Technical Data:
MSI K8T Neo FSR (BIOS 2.0)
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Clawhammer Core)
    Zalman CNPS7000B CPU-Cooler
    3x 512MB Kingston CL2.5 PC400 DDR-RAM (@DDR333 - 3 sticks = DDR333 only!)
NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT AGP (Power Connector is plugged in)
Highpoint HPT370A IDE Controller (PCI 3)
Hauppauge WinTV PCI FM (PCI 5)
Seagate 80GB SATA - Operating system
Hitachi 160GB - OnBoard Pri IDE, Master
LG 4167B - OnBoard Pri IDE, Slave
    Maxtor 200GB - HPT370A Pri IDE, Master
    Seagate 400GB - HPT370A Pri IDE, Slave
    Maxtor 80GB - HPT370A, Sec IDE, Master
    Tagan TG480-U01 480W PSU (3.3V@28A, 5V@48A, 12V@28A)
As I have a Wattmeter at my avail: After power-on and boot-up the system "sucks" ~315W (rig + monitor). If I put load on the system (CPU at full clock, GeForce displaying 3D) it drains ~390W.
As mentioned above I never had any issues with the system.
Does anyone have a suggestion how to resolve the rather annoying power-on problem ?!?
    Thanks,
    Jochen

Did you checl and replace the CMos Battery? You may need to do a complete Bios Clear and start fresh there as well.
Also as the Optical drives changed did you try removing them one at a time and see if the system acts noirmally then?
    Hello, Tiresmoke!
. I unplugged the PSU from the wall socket and removed the battery while clearing the CMOS. The CMOS Battery is OK - ~3.34V (reading from a Voltmeter - matches with the display at PC Health Status).
. I already took out the LG DVD-RAM drive and put the old optical drives back in. Even in its old "original" configuration the aforementioned problem persists.
. I already reseated the CPU and renewed the thermal compound.
However, I even get the "Early chipset" startup when the system is bareboned ... CPU + 1 memstick (doesn't matter which one out of the three I plug in) + Keyb + GFX. D-Bracket shows "Early Chipset Init", the boards goes through several reset-loops and fires up fine.
BTW: Maybe this will give some clue ...
. When I do a warm reset (reboot triggered by OS) the board restarts fine - Reset, POST, Boot.
. When I shutdown and disconnect power from the PSU, lets say for about 5 minutes, then reconnect it and power-on the "Early chipset init" shows up.
Are there any chances that the PSU is actually causing the problem although this particular problem never showed up before the "spring-cleaning"?
    Thanks,
    Jochen

  • Mushkin announces k8t memory problem

    http://forums.mushkin.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1247
Kind of bad news people. My buddy Patrick and I ( I am Mike K of Mushkin) have found an SPD problem with the 2-2-2 specials and the K8T Neo. We had a customer saying that his RAM is not working, all four of his 512mb 2-2-2 passed on a P4C800 but when we put it on a K8T ( the same board he was using) nothing... nada. We changed the SPD so that it would run 2.5-3-3 @ 2700 posted no prob. The memory would only run 333 even with the timings hard set. So something tells me that there is a problem with the board right now. Perhaps this will be fixed by MSI ( yeah right!!) Though for anyone that has problems with the MSI K8T Neo, have no fear it is not your fault.
So if anyone has these dimms running on a K8T neo, help your buddies out and tell them how you did it! ( or me for that matter)
( also we have not had Glewlio on the problem yet, and we all know what a bad mo'fo he is, so who knows maybe this post will not be neccesary)

It is an AMD issue and not an MSI issue. The memory contyroller is built inside of the CPU and not on the Motherboard. Look at the specs and the limited variety of RAM that the A-64's are compatible with. The cheapy sticks do seem to work better than high end tightly specs super RAM. Look at the cheapies I run and I have had no real issues other than slow timings and yet I get Sandra results as good as most anyone around here. This is a case of buying better RAM than AMD specified is not helping us but leaving folks with some serious stability issues if the High End stuff can even be made to work at all. I run mine at ddr400 and have timings of 3-4-8 and get 3030 scores +/-10 in Sandra and have right along. So save money and don't bother buying the highest end RAM you can afford and get some that works.

  • My second KT6 Delta FIS2R, problems again..

I had FIS2R with couple of problems: I didn't start after pressing power on -button. All diagnostic leds were red (processor damaged). After pressing reset computer booted up nicely. This problem was from beginning, later (after half year(?) usage) came stability-problems. System became very unstable. Even when all memory and cpu-speeds were as low as possible, there were problems: Windows hanging, prime gave error etc.
So I got RMA-code and returned it. Board I got back was same model, same revision. It just worked fine, no problems at all. But now there is also that "won't start" -problem sometimes (with diagnostic leds turned red). I tried to run prime95 torture test after first time computer didn't start without preset and it was running errorfree. Now after about month later, prime95 ran only 1h 52min.
    Anybody else having same problems?
Is there many revisions of that board, perhaps newer?
    System:
    KT6 Delta FIS2R
    XP 2500+
    512Mb M-TEC 400MHz
    Club 3D Radeon 8500
    360W PSU
    Samsung SATA-Drive

I don't think there is a problem with hard disks, same problem was with Seagate only and with Samsung only. Now with this new board, these hangings on startup happens so randomly, that I'm willing to believe that my PSU can't give enough power.
Those stability issues were probably caused overheated NorthBridge. It was too hot to touch. I changed bigger fan to CPU -heatsink and now it also blows to NB and it's much cooler. Prime95 has been running 12 hours no with no errors. Gotta see and hope it runs errorfree for next 12 hours too.
Maybe I was just scared because last FIS2R became so unstable that even if I put all setting as (s)low as possible, it wouldn't work.
Windows is just fine, I made fresh install couple of week ago and I don't have net at home so it should be quite clean..
Thank's to all of you, at least I know now to try replace PSU if there is problems..

  • MSI KT6 DELTA FIS2R problems

Well, I finally received my new KT6 DELTA FIS2R motherboard (I replaced my K7N2 Delta ILSR).  After getting the wrong model and one with missing parts...  I think I received a defective one!  I tried to format and make a new installation of Win Xp.  While it tried to make its first boot, the thing crashed and it would not reboot.  I tried resetting the BIOS and then i got the message: CMOS corrupted or damaged. (The diagnostic led indicated the same thing).  I experienced another problem,  while I was using my computer, the CPU was running at 60C, in windows! (before reinstalling). Does anybody has the same problems with their KT6 boards...  Does it need to be returned?
    Thanks for the help,
    Valkyr

From your post its not totally clear where you are at. Does the system still POST?
First of all, it is normal to get some kind of error message the first time after clearing cmos. Entering bios or hitting the key for "load defaults" will make that go away.  If you do that and errors still happen in bios then you have more serious problems.
As far as the temp goes, redo the cpu installation making sure you totally remove all the old thermal pad/compound and use proper amount of new stuff.

  • 875P Neo-FIS2R Problems

    hi all,
i just purchased an 875P FIS2R with a 3.0C processor.  my power supply is codegen 350W
    i have the following questions:
    i have bios v1.6 - should i go for bios 1.8 ?
i have been reading in these forums that bios 1.8 is not good.
there is no option in the bios to lock the agp/pci bus at 66/33 respectively.  is this a bios v1.6 problem ? if so, will the new bios fix it ?
i am getting artifacts on screen - even in BIOS and MS-DOS mode.  what could the problem be ? everything is at default setting - voltages, clocks etc.
the memory that i am using with this board right now is 256mb kingston valueram ddr 333 (single channel ) and i am using a TNT2 32 MB graphics card with it because:
i got 1GB of twinmos DDR400 memory with it, but it was remarked memory and didnt work at all so i'm in the process of exchanging it and
the 9800XT graphics card is in shipping

OK this is going to sound CRAZY but it has worked for a lot of us!! First go into the BIOS, and on the (Integrated Peripherals) page go to "On-Chip IDE Config." and when you open that I want you to first set (don't worry you are not going to leave it like that) So set it to S-ATA only, and then scroll down and make P-ATA keep enabled to YES... Then go back up and make S-ATA keep enabled as YES Then gp back and set it to however your system is S-ATA only or P-ATA only..Then go to (Freq. and Voltage) and when you go down to AGP/PCI you will now see that you have ONLY 3 CHOISES instead of I think it was 1 MHZ increments with the other way.. And you can get really close to 66/33 ....I know it sounds CRAZY but try it and let me know ...Sean REILLY875

  • 875P NEO FIS2R problems with booting at power-up

Having problems with booting at power-up.
Recently, with no apparent modification to system - at power up the system will often not boot.  About 80% of time systems seems to go into a loop with CD/DVD drive light blinking a few times, then the floppy drive light comes on and can hear the FDD run – within 30 seconds or so, this process starts over again.  Power switch LED is on and HDD LED is on (continuously).  All fans are running (power supply fan, case fan, CPU fan and Intel Canterwood 875 fan ).
Monitor power on light is in power save mode (amber) when system does not boot.  When boot is successful the monitor power light turns green immediately.
After pressing the reset button several times (varies between pressing reset button 1 time to 30 or more times) system will then boot OK or go into set up.
Once running there is no apparent problem.
This mainboard comes with D Bracket containing 2 USB 2.0 ports, and 4 diagnostics LEDs - when boot problem occurs the diagnostic LEDs, give a code that in the MSI mainboard manual states “Initializing Keyboard Controller” and diagnostic LEDs stays in this mode until via reset button provides a successful boot and start up.
    Have reseated all connectors.

No, second 40GB HDD was installed months before this issue started and is jumpered as slave drive.  Also, no other additional hardware installed for several months before issue.

  • [msi k8t neo]problem after flashing to 2.20

    hello
i have a MS-6702 (K8T Neo-FIS2R) motherboard and after flashing my bios it shows my ddr400 ram as ddr 333
    here is my system config:
    athlon 64 2800+
    2x256 ddr 400
1x80gb and 1x120gb sata seagate hdd
    ati radeon 9600xt
    win xp sp1
also please could you tell me if i could use the ddr 533 sticks with my config....
    thank you

    thanks...
but i think its because the ddrs were made by  2 diff manuf. and the new bios reports the cas lwrong for both both are actually 2.5 but it shows 2.5 for one and 3 for the other....dont know why thuis happened...and cpu-z shows one clocked at 166.7 and the other at 200......
also the ddr 533s would not be able to give their full potential in my config?...
as i am planning to get new ddrs as i have to give these to my bro...

  • MSI K8T-Neo problem: Extended Powerdown to Post

    Hello All,
I just upgraded my computer with a new K8T-NEO motherboard and AMD 64 3200+ processor.  The other parts from my old system were transferred over.  Here's the problem:
    - If I reboot from Windows it doesn't post--no video signal even.  The fans are going but the drives never spin up.
    - If I turn off the computer completely, then power it on again, no post or drives spinning
    - If I turn the computer off completely, AND LEAVE IT OFF for at least two minutes, the computer posts and boots fine.
Once I'm in Windows the machine seems to run rock solid.
    Here are my other components:
    ATI Radeon 9600 PRO AGP
    2X256MB PC2100DDR ram (Samsung)
    SB Live 5.1
Antec Truepower 350W PSU (bought less than 3 months ago and worked fine in my Athlon 1500)
I have no other add-in boards, and to troubleshoot the problem I removed my SB live, and swapped by ATI for an older Nvidia card I had lying around-- no difference.
My guess is either some sort of capacitor problem on the motherboard, or something wrong with the PSU.  However, since it's a good name brand and worked fine in my old PC, I'm skeptical of this.
Before I RMA this board, anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Jason

While you are at it, check your power management settings in BIOS.
I have a *similar* issue.  Except that if I use the "reboot now" command or "shutdown -r now" under linux, it shuts down, powers up but wont post; these commands attempt to use ACPI functions to soft reboot.  However, if I have a hard shutdown "shutdown -h" or a power off, it posts fine.  Jumpering the reset switch briefly also works; so *hard* resets are ok, soft resets not.
I suspect it is possible the bios is not managing certain acpi functions relating to soft shutdowns and restarts well.
    err!
    jak.
