K8T Neo FIS2R "1394 Net Adapter" in XP's Device Manager

I can't get my firewire port to work or recognize devices attached to it!
I just built a system with the K8T Neo FIS2R and an Athlon 64 3400+ running at stock speeds.  It also has GeiL Golden Dragon (matched pair) PC-3200 DDR which is running 1 trcd increment higher than rated to ensure stability.  I have a lot of devices installed and have reinstalled windows fresh twice now with the same problem.
In device manager, the "VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller" seems to be fine, but in the "Network adapters" category, I see my D-Link Wireless NIC (fine) and "1394 Net Adapter" with a big yellow exclamation mark next to it.
This computer is for a music studio and I absolutely have to use the firewire port because DigiDesign's Digi002 needs to be attached to the computer and communicating properly in order for ProTools 6.1 (our main studio software) to install and run.
I also have the BIOS set to enable the on-board sound, but I also have a pro-audio card installed (the M-audio Delta 1010) and the computer doesn't even see the on-board sound device whether enabled or disabled, when the M-audio card is installed (but this isn't my main concern, getting the firewire working is).

Where?  Nobody seems to be able to provide a valid location to acquire this mysterious "1.3 beta BIOS".  Someone mentioned it is on the german MSI website.  If it is, it's hidden, because I scoured it and found nothing.

  • 1394 net adapter not working in device manager

I,m running the KT4 Ultra  with fire wire on board with XP prof. Every thing is working fine except in device manager I have two listings for the 1394 net adapter. The first has the yellow explantion mark, Code ten."this device won't start. And the second is working but listed as 1394 net adapter #2. On the adapter it has two bhig ports and one small port.I quess the small port is for cam corders. Can I disablr the first 1394 in device manager and just keep the second one. I don't have and fire wire cables so I don't know if the adapter is working on all ports. Thanks Bruce

BIOS->Advanced- see if there is tab like Intel Ethernet ........... Go into it if it is there, and see if it shows if adapter is connected or not (Not link connection as this will bne disabled)
Take adapter out and see if it has bent pins, as this might bre causing the issue. If all fine, get it bnack into the slot for it and take motherboard out of the case and test on non conductive material (motherboard box is ok, NOT Anti conductive bag).  Also >>Posting Guide<<, and you could also try second BIOS (little switch, flip it when PC is OFF)

  • Msi K8T Neo-FIS2R built in 1394 shows up but doesn't work?

I have a msi K8T Neo-FIS2R, and the built in 1394 does not work.  It shows up in windows but doesnt work when plugged in.
I have tried disabling and reenabling in the bios, and disabling almost all other things to eliminate an IRQ problem to no avail.
I have an audigy 2 ZS also which has a firewire port, which is working, but I'd like to have access to the mainboard's ports as well.
    any suggestions?

  • MY K8T Neo-FIS2R with AMD 64 3000+ auto shuts down

I have run this system for several months with core centre all
arms going off when playing graphic intensive games (Call of duty, Counter strike etc).
I have added system fans to cool the machine sown, and this seemed to work ok until three days ago when the alarm was followed by a system shut down!
I can see no obvious problem displayed in core centre, but suspect that the alarm is CPU fan speed related - I am running the AMD supplied Heat sink& Fan assembly.
Anyone have any ideas why this problem has suddenly got worse?

    Hi mcihael ,
Thanks for the tip about Fanspeed.  I have seen it around but never thought i had a need of until now.
I must admit that having all of these extra applications supplied with the motherboard can get a bit confusing - the only real use that Core Center has been to me was the alarm going off letting me know that something serious was wrong!
What's your opinion on case fans?    Should they be EXTRACT, INTAKE or a mixture? Most people i read about say exhaust fans are best to take away the hot air, while others claim intake fans help keep a flow of air around the CPU cooler.

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R with Athlon 64 4000+ mobile CPU

Doing some research on the net, I found out recently that the older mobile CPUs differ from desktop ones just by the lack of a heat spreader on top of the core. And I read up about many successful updates from ppl using the mobile CPU on the desktop socket 754 boards. This is for my 2nd system listed in my sig below - the  K8T Neo-FIS2R. I found a pretty good deal on the Newark CPU AMN4000BKX5BU recently (4000+). I took my existing 3000+ CPU out and I separated the heat-spreader from it. Underneath it's almost identical, except the core is a few mm larger than the mobile CPU. I mounted the heat spreader on the 4000+ CPU and made sure the core has good contact with the heat-spreader (checked the thermal paste imprint). Mounted the CPU in and the board powers on but doesn't POST. I then put my 3000+ in and works just fine. I repeated this 3 times, and just couldn't get the 4000+ to be recognized by the mobo. I thought the CPU may be bad, but it comes from a good source, so even though it's still a possibility, I started doing more research. And then I realized that I forgot to change the core voltage in BIOS from 1.5 to AUTO. The mobile CPU is rated for 1.35v. Do you think this is what affected it? Or is it because I'm on BIOS v.1.9 ? Latest BIOS is 7.1, but all versions passed 1.9 only introduced compatibility with Sempron CPUs (which I'm not using) and it limited DDR recognition to 333 only. I'm using DDR400 which is running well at 200MHz. All higher BIOS levels don't allow to run it in stock speed at higher than 166MHz. So that's why I wanted to keep the v.1.9.
Any ideas why the 4000+ CPU wouldn't be recognized by this board?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm making some headway, but in effect, I temporarily hindered this system more than it was I got the CPU to finally work, but it only recognizes 1/4 of the memory I used to have... here are the details:
I upgraded BIOS to the latest 7.1 and the installed 4000+ CPU didn't allow the system to POST neither. I then cleared the CMOS and just for good measure removed 1 of my memory sticks (I had 2x1GB, as listed in my sig for the lower system). Then the old faithful came to life again After making more test I noticed that no matter what I do, whether I use DDR400 or DDR333 sticks (I also have those in 2x1GB), the only way it works is with a single stick in DIMM1. In manual, the configurations show that that memory can be inserted in different DIMM sockets, not necessarily the 1st one, but in my case, no other setup works than a single stick in DIMM1. As I mentioned earlier, BIOS versions above 1.9 (I checked them all in the past) don't allow DDR400 to run at 200MHz, but only at 166. Also, ver.7.1 reports CPU temperature incorrectly, about 10 degrees Celcius lower than it actually is. I actually noticed that in the past with my other CPU, too. Since nothing else could be accomplished here, I decided to go back to BIOS v.1.9. But the situation relating to RAM didn't change. It still only functions fine with a single stick in DIMM1.
I also tried resetting CMOS several times at different occasions, and when reset in ver.7.1 it would POST with 2 sticks of RAM in, but after loading BIOS settings, it would work fine (only as far as POSTs, because I never booted to OS during these tests) and would restart fine as long as it wasn't completely shut down. Once it was shut down, it wouldn't POST again.
In ver.7.1, the CPU was recognized by BIOS correctly as 4000+, however back at ver.1.9 BIOS recognizes it as 4200+ (something that doesn't exist for socket 754, AFAIK). However, the DDR400 is again working at 200MHz and the CPU core temp is reported correctly.
In ver.1.9 the CPU voltage when set to AUTO would run at about 0.9v, which might've been causing no POSTs until CMOS was reset. I manually lowered it to the minimal setting possible of 1.4v. It is rated at 1.35v and now is reported to run at 1.38v and still much cooler than my older desktop CPU 3000+. From what I read, AMD was doing binning on the mobile athlons, so I'm sure all of them can work fine even at 1.5v or higher, if needed.
Anyway, I temporarily gave up and decided to wait for some golden thoughts from you guys (or MSI Support, whom I also contacted about this, but it'll be a miracle if they respond with some help). Then I booted up into Windows, and even though CPU-Z recognizes the single stick of 1GB RAM I left there, Windows only reports it as 512MB. Also, CPU-Z reports the CPU in one spot as 4000+ and then in another (a little below) as 4200+. I guess the multiplier of x13 causes the confusion? Could that also be the reason for not recognizing more memory? I also tried lowering the HT Link in BIOS to 200 and 600MHz and that didn't help as far as allowing to use the 2nd stick of RAM. Please check the below screenshots for more details.
    Thanks

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R Old Problem, New Issue

I made my system back in 2003 using a K8T Neo-FIS2R motherboard and a Barracuda 7200 SATA 160GB drive (ST3160023AS). If you don't remember, back then motherboards that supported SATA drives for main drives, sometimes needed extra drivers in order for the windows installation process to work. At first this threw me, but since then I have reformatted my drive a few times using the same disk with no issues.
5 years of file sharing can do a number on your harddrives, and it seems my Barracuda has finally died. It came time to replace my drive with a Western Digital Caviar 320GB drive SE16 (WD3200AAKS). I did not predict there would be any issue with replacing my SATA drive. I have another 500GB drive connected to my system used for only storage and the computer recognized it at once.
So I formatted my WD HD, to NTFS and made it active. Then I installed it in my computer disconnecting my other 500GB drive. I ran windows installation with my Windows CD (which I have used many times and I keep it in pristine condition).
I found that after I hit F6, and it gave me a selection of SATA drivers to use (used xp), it did not not see that drive was there when asking which drive to format (I repeated this many times).  I set about making a new SATA boot disk thinking that my pre-used one had gone bad.
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=565
VIA VT8237(R) SATA RAID Driver (For floppy driver)
I followed the disk directions having already done it before. When I tried to install with my new drivers, I got this error.
"File\I386\NT5\viamraid.sys caused an unexpected error (4096) at line 2108 in d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c."
Now i KNOW my windows instillation CD is good, but just in case I used another windows CD and got the same error.
The only idea I can come up with is that I upgraded the bios to much and now it is having issues. My bios version is:
    AMIBIOS A6702VMS V2.2 030405
    SATA378 TX2plus(tm) Bios Version 1.00.103026
Does anyone have any ideas of what I can try? I have done all the easy stuff I could think off like try different cables, and plug in my SATA to the second sata port and not the first. I have run out of ideas.
The only list thing I could try was connecting my sata drive to the computer using a SATA to USB adapter, and finding the partition in windows through that way. For some weird reason windows will see USBs in the computer but not installed Sata drives. I am thinking I will install windows using the USB device and then try plugging in the drive directly. I have no idea if it will work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your help.
I tried your two versions of your drivers, "VIA PIDE&SATA RAID.rar" "Promise 20378 S-ATA RAID.rar" neither of them worked well (I selected the "VIA RAID Controller(Windows XP"). I received a slightly different version of the last error "File\I386\NT5\viamraid.sys caused an unexpected error (4096) at line 2108 in d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c."
The (4096) was a different number.
I had used 4 different (yet old) disks, trying to get it to work. None of them did so until i tried it once more. This last time worked, it saw and used the drivers. I was able to get into the disk selection screen, and set to format the disk. As it started formatting (Quick), windows said that there was something wrong with the "Disk or CD". It then asked for me to install the SATA combo drivers. I let it detect the drivers I was using, and it kept saying something was wrong. I tried it 3 more times, and the last time it held and copied the files from the CD, to start windows.
It is obvious to me that I have either a bad disk, CD, Disk drive, or CD drive. This is quite possiblly my last format before I make my new computer. Thank you very much for your help. I would have had to start my voodoo magic tricks to get it to work.
    Crappy floppy cause that
Happend to me many times as well, when you receive the error take out diskette and re-insert it, then load drivers again until works.
Of course simple solution is just replace the floppy drive to avoid "voodoo magic tricks"
Or best solution do a slipstream XP installation and integrate the drivers which you need in XP installation.
    >>> Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD<<<
    >>> Slipstreamed Windows XP CD Using SP2<<<
"Thank you very much for your help. I would have had to start my voodoo magic tricks to get it to work."
    You are done well

  • W510 w/WinXP, device manager reports issue w/1394 Net Adapter (error code=10)

I recently reimaged a brand new W510 w/WinXP w/SP3 & installed Lenovo Toolbox utility. Which immediately identified an issue w/the 1394 Net Adapter in Device Manager. Looking at the Device Status (details) it states "The Device Cannot Start (code 10)" and suggests reloading the drivers. I've tried updating them using the UPDATE DRIVER button and searching the web but it states Windows cannot find a better match then the one I have. I've copied the driver from a 2nd WinXP machine (nic1394.sys). I've installed all of the Microsoft updates (for Critical Software and Hardware). Installed the Lenovo Driver Update utility & installed all available driver updates and flashed the BIOS and nothing has resolved it.  I've run the full Lenovo toolbox diags and everything passes (including the 1394 adapters) I've also sent the PC into Lenovo for repair and they indicate everything tests fine as well..
Question, does anyone one know if this device is compatible w/WinXP ? Any other suggestions ?

  • Onboard 5.1 sound noisy - K8T Neo FIS2R

    Hi guys, i'm new here.
Well, i got a K8T Neo FIS2R and the 5.1 sound is noisy. I've tried many different drivers, replaced my 5.1 speakers for new ones and it doesn't work properly at all. I've been using a  2.1 system and it works just fine. Has anyone seen this problem? any advice?
    Thanks in advance
    Kein

LOL OK you can save us time by replying to that end the next time. Thanks.
I know it may seem trivial but I can't count how many times a suggestion was assumed to have been tried and it turned out to be the fix in the end. So if we seem grouchy about getting a reply remember that we aren't the only one's that waste time chasing stuff when no one let's us know what they have tested.
OK back to your problem. There are no magic buttons to push. If you have tried other speakers and drivers then it is likely something on the MB that is causing the problem. It could be a power line somewhere close to a chip or connection, it could be a bad ground. If you have a Sound card handy you could also check it to see if the problem goes away. Otherwise you may have to RMA it.

  • PSU for K8T Neo-FIS2R

What model of PSU has its cooling fans which can be controlled from PWFAN1 and PWFAN2 on the K8T Neo-FIS2R motherboard?
    Kaz

Sorry but there is no real specific one out there that I have ever seen. Most of the Bios options you see have been available since forever with Via Chipsetted boards. However DOT is specific to MSI which is Dynamic Overclocking technolodies. DOT can automatically overclock your voard depending one what your doing. I recommend staying away from it as it can cause as many issues as anything in your rig. And then there is Cool and Quiet which is an AMD 64 Bit CPU specific option to downclock the multipliers for the CPU during Idle Times to save energy and keep the CPU cool. Again it is not really needed.
The rest of the stuff you can use google to find individually or by searching for Award Bios's or Via Chipset Bios settings.
These are way to much for any one person to post a complete guide to here as all the info is readily available elsewhere.

  • Should I flash the bios? K8T NEO FIS2R

Ok... I have a K8T NEO FIS2R mobo.  A couple of friends of mine have been telling me to flash the bios to the most current version...  Then some other people have been telling me that it is too risky and I should hold off untill something goes wrong that I know a bios flash can fix...
I'm just wondering what is the concencious here... should I flash it, or should I stay with the current version I have now(the one that came with the mobo)  I Like to have my computer as up to date as possible, but all the reports of bad flashes have me a little worried.  This is a procedure that I have never done before, and I dont want to mess it up.
If I should flash, Any insight, tips, tricks, special instructions, etc... would be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks!
    Magnum

Thanks guys for the quick responces...  I'm used to not getting a responce from forums for 12-24hrs and here it is less than 24hrs later and I have 10 responces.
I'm not at my computer in question right now, but I am almost positive that my bios is ver1.0.  Same one that came with my mobo.
At this point I am leaning towards flashing...  If basically the only way to mess it up is to have my power fail, then I dont think I will have a problem.  I'll just borrow an UPS from work here to be on the safe side.
hypothetically if i follow the instructions to a tee(windows flash/live update) are there any other ways it can mess it up?  I just want to get a hold on all the places where I could mess it up.
Will live update take me all the way through the procedure, or do I need a separate set of instructions to read off of during the flash?
Also what gear will I need...  floppy disk? anything else?
Sorry about all the questions, just want to make sure I do this right the first time!
    Thanks!

  • 6600GT not working with K8T neo-FIS2R

I recently returned a K8T NEO-FIS2R MB for repair. The problem was that the PS/2 and USB ports were broken. However the MB has been returned and the PS/2 and USB ports work fine. I posted about this several months ago.
Now the AGP port seems to be broken (not the actual slot). I have tried a 6800 Ultra and a 6600 GT (AGP version) GFX card in this slot. Both cards fail at the driver installation point. I have tried driver versions 66.93, 67.02 and 67.03. I also tried 3 versions of the via drivers 451, 453 and 455. Even tried XP with SP1 and SP2. The PC will sometimes BSOD, reset, won't boot into windows. The drivers sometimes install then other times they won't, etc. The problems only seem to be with the drivers for the GFX cards.
The 6600 GT works as I have tried it in another MB without any problems.
I know the memory works fine as I used memtest86+ for a couple of hours on the default settings without any errors and it works in another PC.
The spec of the PC is:
    XP pro
    K8T NEO-FIS2R MB
    512MB corsair XMS at 2.5-3-7-3
    XFX 6600GT
    40gig HDD
    FDD
    Plextor CD writer
    DVD Rom
    PSU is a Q-tec 550W
I know Q-tec PSUs are not up to much from what I have read elsewhere in this forum, but I have had it running in a similar system with the 6800 Ultra installed without any trouble (even with the above MB before it went faulty). I have also tried a 400W PSU, that came with the case. The Voltages on the 12V line are between 12.00 and 12.03 when using the Q-tec PSU.
Has any body else had these problems with the 6600GT in the mentioned MB.
Also, how can I check the serial number on the MB with the label on the box, as this MB that was returned to me looks to “clean” to be the one I sent away for repair.
    Thanks for any help

Hey, I'm glad to see a post on the new Gforce 6600GT AGP card.  I just recently put together a brand new system (see my sig for specs).  System runs great.  The only thing I wanted to do was replace the video card, and after a great deal of anxiety I decided the Geforce 6600GT AGP was the best bang for the buck.
Well I got home, installed the card and never get passed the bios screen.  (shows your processor, memory, memory siz), the screen u hit DEL to go into the bios.
The system doens't lock up, NUM LOCK can still be turned on and off, and CAPS can be turned of and on... but thats it.  Just sits on that screen.  I can't go into the bios either.
what settings do I need to do prior to isntalling this card to get it to work.
Let me know if you all need anymore details to help me out.
oh, I did reset my frequency to 10x200 (which is what I think the 3000+ is supposed to be at).

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R - 3200+ - Mushkin Level 1 RAM: Optimal Memory Settings

    Just got a K8T Neo-FIS2R with a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with 1g (512MB X
    2) Mushkin Level 1 PC3500 RAM as recommended by Anandtech on his High
    End System roundup:
    www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.html?i=2041
I am having a HUGE problems with memory settings in the BIOS.
On AUTO, the memory is only autodected at DDR200, which I found odd.
I them took memory setting in my old hands and things don't seem much
    better:
    I made these changes:
    MEMCLOCK: DDR400
    BANK INTERVEAVING: AUTO
    BURST LENGTH: 8 BEAT
    CL: 2
    TRCD: 3
    TRAS: 5
    TRP: 2
This was unstable at first and  bumped the DDR Voltage to 2.7, moved
the sticks to DIMM1 and DIMM3 (instead of DIMM2), and it seems stable,
but not very fast. according to Sandra Scores
Any recommendations for Memory Settings?   Why would the MB not
autodecte DDR400 RAM?  I am not looking to overlock...just maximize
the CPU and memory I have.
Maybe I just need to get new memory.  What is the best memory for this motherboard?
    Thanks,
    Steve

I'm running the same mem (see my sig).  Since its PC3500 I attempted to tighten the settings to those you had listed (2,3,2,5).  It was not Prime95 torture test stable at even the stock 200 MHz FSB using these settings.  Upping the voltage to 2.7 did not increase the stability in my system at these settings.  The memory ran perfectly at AUTO settings, but was clocked at 2.5,3,3,8 I believe.
Keep in mind that level 1 is advertised at 2,3,3.  My system is 100% stable at 2.7V for me up to 210 MHz FSB at these settings (I haven't tried any faster).  My TRAS is set to 6.
Hope this helps a fellow Mushkin user

  • K8t neo fis2r - core center not functional after installing sound card

Hi.  I had been using Core Center with Dynamic Overclocking enabled and all was well.  When idle, my amd64 3000+ (2.0ghz), was running at 800mhz.  Under load it would go up to 2100mhz.  But yesterday, I installed an Auzentech x-plosion sound card and after i installed the driver, the dynamic overclocking stopped working, my cpu is running at max all the time.  (The variable fan speed function still works).
I checked the IRQ and there is no conflict, I uninstalled the amd64 driver and core center and reinstalled.  Still does not work.  I uninstalled the auzentech driver, rebooted, and cancelled new hardware wizard.  Then the variable cpu frequency feature worked.  Once I install the driver for the auzentech, dynamic oc stops working.  I was thinking to try another pci slot but it appears to be a software issue rather than a hardware issue.  The new version of Core Center does not work with my board even though msi says it's compatible so I'm still using the one that always worked.  The amd driver is the latest and also always worked.
Has anyone else had a similar problem, perhaps using the auzentech sound card with this board and Core Center?  Or does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Hey guys, I just went to AMDs site to get the dashboard utility mentioned and in the readme, it stated that in XP, the power option needs to be set to portable/laptop.  But in the past, I read that it needed to be set to "always on" and that it is, in fact, what I had it set to before when cool n quiet was working.  Now I change it to "portable/laptop" and it works and set to "always on" doesn't work anymore.  So now Core Center reports I'm at 33c @800mhz at no load.   I don't get it???  I'll have to try an alternate utility just to verify that is indeed working.
btw, QV, I checked system properties, (right-click my computer > properties, or "system" in control panel) and on the "general" tab, it indicates an AMD64 3000+, 2.0GHz.  But I'm pretty certain the clock frequency is dropping now as reported by core center because of the decrease in the cpu temp at idle.  Am I looking in the right place in XP?  I have XP pro, SP2
Again, thanks for the input and Happy New Year

  • Msi k8t neo fis2r problems part 3

sometimes when the computer is turned on it just turns the fans and leds on but doesnt boot up...
most of the time it loads up and i boot to the windows xp cd and i install the drivers for sata and then when it reaches the point of copying the files it will give me a bsod and say that there is a problem with the irql driver and then force me to shut the pc down..
sometimes it makes it past that and will begin to copy files onto the hard drive, like somehow the data is becoming corrupted..however it will start to say that the files cant copy randomly and it will allow me to retry..they will copy the 2nd time usually..i can keep hitting retry and it will usually go by..it gets to 30 something % and then crashes to bsod just giving me some random error..for some reason the files keep screwing up that go on the sata drive....I just replaced the old power supply that wasnt working with an antec true watt 430 watt power supply, so i know it isnt that..
i just cant figure out what the heck is going on..any help would be appreciated.my specs are
    "IRQ NOT EQUAL OR LESS"
    athlon 64 3000+ cpu
    msi k8t neo fis2r motherboard
    mushkin special cas 2.0 2-2-2-5 512 mb pc 3200
western digital 8mb cache 80 gb sata hard drive
sapphire radeon 9800 pro 128 mb 8x agp

fyi look an your cd sticker ity will show power, consumption, but they are way lower than you would think, hard drives, can be only 10 watts, less then some case lights , and fans, cd are  similar.. your video, is the biggy somewhere between 90~150 watts..yikes .next to the cpu..and the mobo can use 50 or so (not sure about new mobos)  not to mention the ram 1024 is @40 watts or so., dont forget about 25watts per pci card, not counting the sound card which can be double....
ergo the need for a big psu..
the combined total ratting on a psu is not the max number that the psu is rated, that is surge value.. so a 500 may only hold 400 sustained , and that will drop as the machine heats up, so in the end your 500 may onlyy pull 366 @50'c...
