K8T Neo-FIS2R / Kingston KVR400X64C25/256

As a first time poster my apolgies if this has been covered elsewhere - I have read most of the posts on this forum but found no specific reference. Please just point me in the right direction if i am wrong!
I bought the Kingston KVR400X64C25/256 modules because:
a) they were listed by MSI on the list of tested Ram
b) they were on Kingston's list for the K8T NEO &
c) they were in stock. However...
If installed in DIMM 2 & 3 (as per MSI tested RAM pdf) the system crashes on trying to load Windows. DIMM 1 & 2 'works' if that allows for 8 or 9 restarts/day. I  tried 1 & 3 to see if that improved the situation, but if anything it was worse. I have tried increasing the RAM voltage to 2.6 but there is no discernable difference. Upping the TRCD to 4 makes little or no difference.
Memtest86+ initially found no errors (16 hrs/93 passes) but when left running for a week came up with 10 errors (8 in test 6, 2 in test 4). MemTest (http://hcidesign.com/memtest/) gives me an average of 10 errors for 300% pass.
I'm now trying running the memory at 2.7v (within Kingston's ±.25v range).
In the meantime, has anyone run this memory without any problem - i.e. is it a simple case of faulty memory? Equally, has anyone had similar problems and found a solution?
thanks

hmmm! What if memtest, Prime95 etc. detect no problem over lengthy periods when sticks are individually tested in DIMM1 - as well as the system not crashing once - , but boot failures/memory dumps etc. abound when same sticks are individually placed at 2 or 3? Is this still a memory issue?
For what it's worth I have found Kingston's technical support more than helpful.

• MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R - help please :(

When i first got this board + my Athlon 64bit 3200+ I just left everything in bios at default, and counter-strike bullet registration was amazing, the FSB clock said 133, (no i did not imagine this as ive had two of these boards and they both said 133fsb when i went to bios).... one day my p.c wouldnt boot up, i did a series of tests and couldnt find what was wrong, i eventaully reset cmos and still it would not boot up properly. So i got a new harddrive and that seemed to solve the problem, only this time when i went to bios instead of the FSB saying 100-280, it said 190-280, now counter-strike bullet reg has totally gone and plays like , oh sure good frames per second but it doesnt feel instant, i want 133fsb back quite desperately, i was hoping one of you kind people could tell me if theres fsb jumpers on my board or how i can get 133fsb back, wont let me below 190 at the moment :(
Thanks

below are my specs, similar to yours.  the issue is in the audigy card .. remove it , try a different card ( live ) if some one can resolve this please let me know too..
I have a problem ,when ever I boot my system hangs ( at sound card) ,if I power down and reboot a few seconds later its fine.if I leave it running its fine, only on a cold start. if I remove my audigy card this problem goes away, I can use other cards ,but not the audigy, did you ever have this issue ,or know any one who has had an irq issue like this( I think its in the irq) ...............

• MSI K8T NEO-FIS2R: RAM problems

I have the motherboard K8T NEO-FIS2R with AMIBIOS 2VMS V2.0 010505.
I tried these DDR-RAM:
DDR-RAM 512MB PC400 CL3 Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512
DDR-RAM 512MB PC400 CL3 Samsung
but the motherboard recognizes only 256 MB for both. The RAM are good: I tried them in an other pc!
Now I have installed an A-DATA ram 256 MB and the motherboard recognizes 256 MB!
Do you think that my motherboard is defective?
Thank you in advance.
P.S. I'm sorry for my bad english.

No the memory controller is onboard the CPU so in any case the MB is not defective. However the CPU revision may hold you back on some RAM especially if you mix make and model RAM on the same channel. A socket 754 CPU only has one channel so all RAM must be matched to work properly.
If those Sticks can only be seen as a wrong value when used by themselves it is likely that either they have errors or the timings in Bios are improperly set to azllow them to work. In this case you can normally find out what is going on by running memtest86. If you get errors on test 5 or 7 then you have timgs timed improperly and any other errors would show bad RAM.
Another case is not having enough power for everything to work properly together. Usually this happens when you don't have enough 12v amps for these newer rigs.
Post complete specs and test results and maybe we can help you further.

• K8T NEO-FIS2R goes into suspend. Lose display.

First, here is my setup.
MB: K8T NEO-FIS2R
CPU: AMD 64 3200+ 1MB L2 Cache
CPU Fan: Thermaltake Venus 12
RAM: TWINX1024-3200LLPT (2x512Mb DDR400 - Corsair XMS Extreme - Cas Latency: 2-3-2-6 T1)
HD: 6Y120M0 - SATA Maxtor 120GB (plugged on SER1 not the one from Promise)
DVD-RW & Floppy
video card: ASUS nVIDIA GeForce FX5700 - 8X AGP - 256MB DDR - Core Speed 425MHz
Power Supply: Turbolink 350W - +3.3V/24A - +5V/35A - +12V/12A
And of course I have 5 case fans w/ led, the UV light, etc... etc...
Now here is my problem:
When I power up for the first time, my display is kind of crappy (some small lines etc...). I managed to get to the bios etc... after a while the system goes into suspend (Power LED blinking). Can't turn it back on unless I turn off/on the PSU.
When I switch my video card to a ATI Rage 128Mb (my old computer). The picture is good but the system still goes into suspend mode (Power LED blinking).
Also the other weird thing with my 256MB video card, when the system goes into suspend after that I bring it backup, my display is gone, when I switch to my 128MB video card and back to the 256 I get the display back.
I suspect that my PSU is too weak but instead of spending more money on this system I wanted to double check with you guys.
Also, before anybody asks me. Yes, I plugged in the 4-pin 12V connector into the MB.
TZ
EDITED: There was a typo on the +12V of the PSU The correct value is 12A as listed on the PSU. Sorry about that.

Jocko>
new PSU -> Enermax 550W (EG651P-VE(FMA), beautifull by the way, feel the power )
Yes 4 pin 12V for connector plugged in
Yes 3 pin power fan connected in pwr_fan connector
Yes still shutdown w/ green light laughing at me.......
No Thermal paste, using a thermal pad, new. Volcano heatsink/fan, running, have a dial on PCI mount place turned to max. According to bios fan running at 5300 rpm. According to bios, CPU temp is 96°F. Should I switch to thermal paste? (I don't really want to butter the CPU if I need to return it... who knows... will check tomorrow anyway...)
video card1: ASUS nVIDIA GeForce FX5700 - 8X AGP - 256MB DDR - Core Speed 425MHz
video card2: ATI Rage 128Mb (don't know model # or anything, I'm not at the office right now....)
video card1: no display when hard drive/DVD/floppy plugged in
video card2: display ok
both video cards have fans and they are both spinnin'

ground myself and touch the case everytime.
yes, and removes easily and goes back in easily.
nope everything is cool, nothing got bent pushed or anything
all new came with the heatsink, but might switch to thermal paste now....  ndicator wire pluggin in cpufan1, fan speed crontroled by dial which is set at the max now.
the stix i have right now are corsair twinx. but I also tried with 1 stick kingston value pc2700(?)(DDR333)
didn't do only power switch & power led only, will do tomorrow and let you know.
yes
yes
pin 1 faces where it should (used floppy drive to flash bios already)
no, 1 DVD set as CS at the end of cable, 1 SATA Maxtor 120GB on SATA1 (the one that's not from promise)
yes
yes
no right now I took the MB out to exclude shorts
yes, tried also w/o the d-bracket
CPU is immaculate. will put thermal paste instead of the pad tomorrow (now, i'm starting to think that the thermal pad is not thick enough to contact the CPU and the heatsink, but geez, hard to believe... anyway, worth a try)
no loose wires
heatsink secure (actually I love this new system with the locking thing   )
I think that the kingston value is used by other users, and the twinx corsair DDR400 is used also if settings changed in bios (which I tried also), but I don't think it would 'cause a shutdown though, specially if the computer does nothing but seat and be on.
Yes different video card, but my ASUS 256Mb doesn't have its own power supply, checked five times, and fan spins when mb powered up
No, right now hard drive and DVD drive are not plugged in until my system stays up (no need to fry them)
d-bracket lights: 4 green lights when booting on floppy (even when getting to looking for booting device)
Didn't try different wall outlet but used this one already to run several computers, should I try another one?
Nope never, before I put my fingers in, I turn off the computer, switch the PSU off, unplug the power cord from the PSU, and make sure to hear the little buzz sound when power unloads.

• MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R - Suggestions

Hi,
I have just ordered these parts:
AMD Athlon 64 3200 (Socket 754) - Retail (CP-060-AM)
Asus DVD-E616P1 16X DVD-ROM / 48X CD-ROM - Retail (CD-002-AS)
Western Digital Caviar 120GB Special Edition 8MB Cache Serial ATA - OEM (HD-009-WD)
Antec Sonata Piano Black Quiet Case - 380W TruePower Silent PSU (CA-003-AT)
MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R (Socket 754) Motherboard (MB-010-MS)
Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro
I am still stuck on RAM, despite searching other topics. Which PC3200 RAM actually works to the speed that it should, I'm not convinced by the MSI list.
Will Kingston HyperX PC3200 work to its full standard? I was initially looking at KingMax PC3500 RAM which is a lot cheaper, however it seems pointless to spend so much on quality parts and then get cheap RAM(although PC3500 should be faster, I assume it shouldn't make any difference if I'm not overclocking). I don't think I can quite afford Mushkin RAM, as I have about £220 for 1GB.
Secondly, with my PSU be able to power the system without overclocking?
Thanks for any ideas.

I would also suggest a better PSU, I had a Enermax 350W before and it only just coped + a high pitched whining sound
Plus a Pentium 4 and an AMD64 = not equivalent in terms of power consumption. If you already have that PSU, then fair enough try it. But if your still planning to buy it... I would go for a better one. Just my 2 cents

• [MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R] 2xCMX512-3200 DDR400 memories (corsair)

I have this motherboard:MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R (MS-6702) and currently i'm using a Kingston memory and the computer runs fine. But i've buyed TWINX1024-3200 (2xCMX512-3200 DDR400) but when I put only this memories the computer after some time or when booting restart suddenly...
Could it be about the bios version, my actual version is v1.0 and I'm using AMI BIOS.
i've runned memtest+ and i get this: http://korpro.org/numb/PICT1348.JPG

I am in almost the exact same situation.
MSI Neo-FIS2R
AMD XP 2800+
2 sticks of DDR400 Corsair XMS memory (CMX512-3200C2) 512mb each (total 1gig)
Any combination of memory together does not allow the motherboard to boot. I get no beeping or warning sounds. Everything powers up but the display remains blank.
Things I have tried in many different combinations:
TRCD = 5, 4, 3, auto
DDR Voltage = Auto, 2.7, 2.65
DDR 200, DDR 300, DDR 333, Auto
Memory in bank 1+2, 1+3, 2+3
Along with those bios setting combinations, I have tried using several bios versions:
v2.2
v2.0
v1.9
v1.8
v1.4 <--- (Stuck with this bios for the moment, since the ami flashing utility HANGS when attempting to erase the boot block in step 2 of flashing procedure for any newer bios.)
As a consequence of several days of trying unsuccessfully to get both sticks of memory to work, I have given up hope on this motherboard.
Why is it so difficult to get two sticks of memory working properly on this motherboard?
Has anyone got another trick or technique or setting I can try that may work?
Alternatives:
Scrap the MSI motherboard -- never buy another piece of MSI crap again.
Buy a single stick of 1gig memory.
Buy a new motherboard from another manufacturer known to work properly -- at the very least not have these memory configuration issues.
Worst motherboard experience I have ever had, unfortunately.

• MY K8T Neo-FIS2R with AMD 64 3000+ auto shuts down

I have run this system for several months with core centre all
arms going off when playing graphic intensive games (Call of duty, Counter strike etc).
I have added system fans to cool the machine sown, and this seemed to work ok until three days ago when the alarm was followed by a system shut down!
I can see no obvious problem displayed in core centre, but suspect that the alarm is CPU fan speed related - I am running the AMD supplied Heat sink& Fan assembly.
Anyone have any ideas why this problem has suddenly got worse?

Hi mcihael ,
Thanks for the tip about Fanspeed.  I have seen it around but never thought i had a need of until now.
I must admit that having all of these extra applications supplied with the motherboard can get a bit confusing - the only real use that Core Center has been to me was the alarm going off letting me know that something serious was wrong!
What's your opinion on case fans?    Should they be EXTRACT, INTAKE or a mixture? Most people i read about say exhaust fans are best to take away the hot air, while others claim intake fans help keep a flow of air around the CPU cooler.
Spooks

• K8T NEO FIS2R can't use the RAID controller....

I have this very strange issue.
As soon as I connect a harddisk to the Promise (378) controller of this board and assign it to an array, the system doesn't work like it should.
Symptoms:
- MS Windiag (a memory testing application) reports thousands of errors
- Memtestx86 causes a spontaneous reset within seconds
- I can try to install Windows, but the process never completes; during the installation everything works really really slow (partial XP installation takes over 2 hours!)
- Linux gives me a kernel panic while booting
My system specs:
- MSI K8T Neo FIS2R (bios 1.5)
- Athlon 3000+
- 2x 512MB PQI memory (tested with GEIL/Kingston/Infineon memory as well, the problem persists!)
- Radeon 9700
- Levicom PSU (34A RMS on 12V line) (also tried Enermax 460W and Antec tru power 480W)
- 2x WD Raptor 36Gb (RAID 0 array 1)
- 2x Maxtor Diamond plus (RAID 0 array 2)
- 4x optical drive
I just can't figure out what's going on here... if I don't use the onboard RAID controller everything is fine.... but I need it for my two arrays... (besides that, it should work, shouldn't it?).
Is this perhaps just a bug in the BIOS of my system? If so... MSI please resolve this issue, my computer is worthless for the time being.. :(

If I put a single module (PQI memory) in DDR slot 1 I get loads of errors. In slot 2 and 3 they work just fine. When combining two modules, using slot 2 and 3, I still get some errors (32, all above 1000Mb)... but it's the best I can get out of my 1Gb.
Is it safe to assume that this is a compatbility issue that can be fixxed by buying some supported memory?

• MSI K8t Neo FIS2R RAID Question

I've just put together my new system. If it weren't for this forum, I might not have succeeded. Thanks for all the info out there.
Currently, I'm running raid 0, using (2) raptor 74's. The next thing I want to do is mirror. I bought a 160 gig maxtor ata drive for this purpose. But, after seeing the table in the MSI raid manual, it looks like I have to use (2) drives the same size as the raptor 74's inorder to use the raid 0+1 configuration. Any help on this would be apreciated.
MSI K8t Neo FIS2R
Athlon 64 3200
Kingston (2) 512mg Hyper X DDR500
Western Digital 74 gig Raptors (2) raid 0
Nvidia Geforce Ti 4200 128mg graphics
shydragon

but mirror raid wont save you from oc crash's , virus, bad installs, acidently, deleteing or any useful recovery..it only protects from hd failure to mechanical or electrical malfunction.
you are far better off imagine the drives or mking backups, and using the drives as storage for that, you will come out ahead.
but if you still want raid 1, you can
partition the drives?
use the smaller ones for system restore , and internet cache, mp3's . for example
for rich performance freaks buy 2 more satas and raid them on the other chip
just a few ideas

• K8t Neo-fis2r - not booting!!!

Hello Motherboard gurus!  Any help would be appreciated...

Everything was working just fine until I switched out my CPU fan for a super quiet Zalman fan.  I hit the power and nothing, but the fan spins up just fine.  No video.  The LED's on the back cycle through a couple of settings and sit at all green except for the upper left at red.  I am at a loss ...perhaps the video card?  I tried replacing the original fan and got the same result
Thanks in advance for any help,
JD

Your power is weak for sure. However you may also be seeing a fan that runs to slow for the motherboard to read. If the speed drops below what the MB expects it will cause issues as it thinks the CPU fan is dead and may not want to operate at all. Check that by reinstalling your old fan. Also on the power issue what is the 12v rail amps on that PSU?

Aspire 520W 12V Black Triple Fan Aluminum Power Supply
Okay heres the problem. I run the windows XP pro sp2 install cd and then i get to the screen were you press S. That works and it gives me a list and i pick the first XP one on the list. Then i press enter and it starts loading the files. At a certain point when it starts the windows setup it says that it cannot copy the following files; VIAMRAID.SYS, VIAMRAID.cat, and VIAMRAID.inf so i use the skip option. The computer runs through the copys the rest of the stuff fine then restarts like it should. When it gets to the windows loading screen it gives me a blue screen error about the HDD or something. Now i have no clue whats wrong with it there is no reason that it should not work.

Could of course be bad floppies, but not usual if you are trying several differant ones ( unless they have been beside a magnetic sourde, like telephone). I would try another cable, then another floppy drive. One or other should fix it, as your bios settings appear good.
Is the floppy shown on first page in bios setup - Standard Cmos Features.

MSI sent me the v1.93 bios. I updated my  MOBO. Now heres one question since this seagate is new and everything else is. Should i have done a full format on the HDD instead of a quick before i tried installing it. My friend is saying thats what i should have been doing instead of the quick format for partitioning.
I update ya on whats going on. Well the new bios didnt change anything. I also did full format on the HDD dudring the windows setup. It took forever to finish the format. Even after the full format it still didnt work.. I tested jockos cable theory and it did not work. And my floppy drive is show as floppy A

• K8T Neo FIS2R not getting through POST

I hope some of you might be able to help me.  I just finished building a new system using the K8T Neo FIS2R motherboard.  I actually had everything working with XP installed, but this morning, I have not booted once.  It's not clearing POST anymore.
I get a long beep followed by 8 short beeps.  According to the BIOS beep codes I've seen in other posts, that has something to do with the BIOS checksum error.  I did upgrade the BIOS to 1.7 from an MSI Live Update download.
I'm basically stuck, is the mobo dead?

This does not bode well for my current situation, or yours.  I have to believe that there are many people out there that have a successful 1.7 BIOS running.
But I'm beginning to lead in this direction now, especially since your description is close to mine.  I was able to run in v1.7 for a short time, then it just died.
Also, I don't know if this helps, but after my beep codes, I assume the POST continues, because about 15 seconds later there is 2 short beep following by 1 long beep and the D-bracket is has green all around minus number 4 which is read.  Assume blue=green here :
This is "Testing RTC (Real Time Clock)".  At this stage it just stops.
I am assuming that I can flash my BIOS using the cntrl-home method, however, if that fails, are we looking at RMA here...   And if so, what are peoples experiences with RMA'ing with an online dealer?  How much proof will I need to go through?
Also, by the way, these forums are awesome... The data here has been great.  It's nice to see such a great forum that has valuable information.
Thanks to everyone for the help so far.

• Onboard 5.1 sound noisy - K8T Neo FIS2R

Hi guys, i'm new here.
Well, i got a K8T Neo FIS2R and the 5.1 sound is noisy. I've tried many different drivers, replaced my 5.1 speakers for new ones and it doesn't work properly at all. I've been using a  2.1 system and it works just fine. Has anyone seen this problem? any advice?
Thanks in advance
Kein

LOL OK you can save us time by replying to that end the next time. Thanks.
I know it may seem trivial but I can't count how many times a suggestion was assumed to have been tried and it turned out to be the fix in the end. So if we seem grouchy about getting a reply remember that we aren't the only one's that waste time chasing stuff when no one let's us know what they have tested.
OK back to your problem. There are no magic buttons to push. If you have tried other speakers and drivers then it is likely something on the MB that is causing the problem. It could be a power line somewhere close to a chip or connection, it could be a bad ground. If you have a Sound card handy you could also check it to see if the problem goes away. Otherwise you may have to RMA it.

Folks, in my mind the N900 is *far* too expensive. No doubt, developing such a device may swallow millions, but, for 500 Euros I get a 15" laptop or a netbook with a UMTS stick and flatrate, whereas Nokia offers a telephone with a small 3,5" display.
