K8T Neo-FIS2R (MS-6702)

Hi,
I have a problem (I think ...) with my mobo MS-6702 (K8T Neo-FIS2R). I have seen in the forum some messages about the bios update, etc but I have to addmitt that I have not arrived to a clear conclusion.
I have found in the MSI web that this mobo has several version of the BIOS, all of them trying to solve some stuff with the cool'n'quiet feature and the Sempron CPU.
Adding more noise to the problem, I'm one of that kind of strange people that use GNU/Linux, and simple don't have a MsWindows to test. So, no corecenter, no windows utilities, etc.
In my mobo, using the BIOS version 2.2, I can boot with the cool'n'quiet enable, but the bios doesn't detect the speed of the fans (always 0rpm) and the system is unstable.
With the 7.1 version, BIOS see and show a correct (feasible value) but the system simple, doesn't boot. I'm using a kernel 2.6.26 (Debian Lenny).
The situation here is that the Linux people says that the BIOS is buggy and the manufacturer says that they _only_ support MS. So, as always, the user lost ...
So, my questions are:
1) why this kind of mess of version numbers of the bios?
2) some one of you have been able to run cool'n'quiet in a Linux and which parameters?
Best regards,
Leo

Neither does BIOS, (but fairly close). The fan control resides in BIOS. I'm not perfectly sure it is SmartFan, but something like that.
I think thatthat part is the corecell technology in this case by MSI
Quote from: Fredrik on 31-October-08, 07:44:52
You can test it yourself, I believe, even if Linuxian: In BIOS load SmartFan or similar and lower the processor speed. Fans should/will spin down as a result of lower temp. Notice in the link that fan control isn't explicitely(?) mentioned. ...Neither is Sempron, if I remember correctly.
It's a combination betwend BIOS parameters and kernel functions, and all that to work together. With the 7.1 version of the BIOS, I can read the fan speeds, not like the other version.

  • K8T Neo - FIS2R (model 6702) SATA and RAID Problems = Hair Loss

    Hi All,
new to the forum, have searched but nothing like my problem exist.
I have a K8T Neo FIS2R M/B and trying to get a single SATA HDD working for my secondary drive. primary is a IDE which works well and I want to leave it.
I have plugged in the SATA HDD into the SER 1 port ( Promise 237 ?)  anyhow the bois at startup or post recognises the drive, but then says soemthing like you have set up raid before F1 for setup F2 to continue to boot.
I have pressed both f1 and F2 at various time, but it appears that it want to turn the single drive into a RAID system, which is not possible with one drive !!....
Anyhow windows XP then boots up and loads a RAID driver and also the promise RAID drivers.  the real problem is that XP sits and waits for the raid which never comes and during startup on XP. it is extremely slow.
Does anyone have any ideas. I am not that computer techy as you can see by the description, but it appears that I cannot get into the RAID bios to turn it off.. I have zapped the bios to try and reset it. basically i am loosing my hair ove this.
if anyone had some step by step instructions how to prevent raid from switching on at the bios and then in XP it would be greatly appreciated
    Jeff

    Hi All,
Sorry for the slow reply, retrieving the box from the bottom of the swimming pool !!!
I set it to SATA as you have indicated Hans, I did check that setting. Thankyou for checking.
Spray, I have tried the P20378 setting as well. You indicate that you need to press F6 when installing the OS. I have WinXP running already on an IDE master and am trying to set the SATA up as a secondary disk drive.
As I indicated above, the machine runs slowly to the point of it being a 486 when I use either promise or Via controllers.
I have since removed the drive and are now having problems with XP on boot up/startup. The thing seems to hang or go slowly when the horizontal bar runs across under the Windows XP logo. I have turned everything off in the bios both Promise and Via.  I am at a loss as to why:
1 it runs slowly with the SATA drive in ( also does not show all the auto loading icons near the clock)
    2. why it hangs when I remove it and turn both SATA controllers off in the bios.
I have a feeling that I may have corrupted part of the registry playing around. Any thoughts... going bald :-)
I really appreciate the feedback so far

  • [Athlon64] MSI K8T Neo FIS2R BIOS Update when? CnQ no workie!

    The MSI K8T Neo FIS2R (MS-6702) hasn't had a BIOS update since 3-4-2005!
I put a Sempron 64 3000+ in my motherboard, and was very disappointed that it is recognized as an "AMD Unknown Processor".  Sure, it works, but one of the reasons I bought it is in the hopes of getting AMD Cool n Quiet to work.  However, apparently the AMD driver can't recognize the CPU due to the old BIOS on the motherboard.
Every other MSI skt 754 board supports Sempron E6 revision already.  Why not the K8T Neo FIS2R?  Where have all the MSI BIOS programmers gone?  I have been waiting 2-months for a BIOS update to support the E6 Semprons.  I have asked and begged MSI Tech Support.  I am tempted to switch to ASUS or some other company that is actually timely with BIOS updates.  Only reason I haven't yet, is this board is everything I want EXCEPT for Cool n Quiet not working.  It's starting to look like there is no BIOS update in sight, so I am very disappointed.
Anyone here work for MSI can confirm there are no plans for a BIOS update?  Because I don't want to wait around for something that's not going to happen.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply I thought the mods here are MSI staff... I was just kind of hoping there's MSI staff lurking here, seeing what people think of their products or seeing what people complain about.
No, pretty much C 'n Q is the only reason I'm disappointed, but it was something I was really set on getting to work since this is a server that's up 24/7, but isn't utilized but maybe 4hrs out of a given day.  I could reduce frequency and voltage, but unlike C 'n Q, it won't automatically increase speed and voltage based on demand - which is something I want since although it's a server, I also use it as a regular PC as well.
I've even tried the 2.33 beta BIOS with no change, and even found a 5.52 BIOS in their BIOS testing directory.  I guess that BIOS was for a different kind of 6702, although I had pulled out the peripheral modules with AMI's MMTOOL and they looked the same as the existing BIOS, but that BIOS killed my motherboard so it couldn't have been for a regular 6702.  I had to desolder the BIOS chip with a heat gun, reprogram the old BIOS back on it with an EPROM programmer, and solder in a socket.  I guess that shows my dedication to get C 'n Q working!

  • [MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R] 2xCMX512-3200 DDR400 memories (corsair)

I have this motherboard:MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R (MS-6702) and currently i'm using a Kingston memory and the computer runs fine. But i've buyed TWINX1024-3200 (2xCMX512-3200 DDR400) but when I put only this memories the computer after some time or when booting restart suddenly...
Could it be about the bios version, my actual version is v1.0 and I'm using AMI BIOS.
    i've runned memtest+ and i get this: http://korpro.org/numb/PICT1348.JPG

I am in almost the exact same situation.
    MSI Neo-FIS2R
    AMD XP 2800+
    2 sticks of DDR400 Corsair XMS memory (CMX512-3200C2) 512mb each (total 1gig)
Any combination of memory together does not allow the motherboard to boot. I get no beeping or warning sounds. Everything powers up but the display remains blank.
Things I have tried in many different combinations:
    TRCD = 5, 4, 3, auto
    DDR Voltage = Auto, 2.7, 2.65
    DDR 200, DDR 300, DDR 333, Auto
    Memory in bank 1+2, 1+3, 2+3
Along with those bios setting combinations, I have tried using several bios versions:
    v2.2
    v2.0
    v1.9
    v1.8
v1.4 <--- (Stuck with this bios for the moment, since the ami flashing utility HANGS when attempting to erase the boot block in step 2 of flashing procedure for any newer bios.)
As a consequence of several days of trying unsuccessfully to get both sticks of memory to work, I have given up hope on this motherboard.
Why is it so difficult to get two sticks of memory working properly on this motherboard?
Has anyone got another trick or technique or setting I can try that may work?
    Alternatives:
Scrap the MSI motherboard -- never buy another piece of MSI crap again.
Buy a single stick of 1gig memory.
Buy a new motherboard from another manufacturer known to work properly -- at the very least not have these memory configuration issues.
Worst motherboard experience I have ever had, unfortunately.

I have added system fans to cool the machine sown, and this seemed to work ok until three days ago when the alarm was followed by a system shut down!
I can see no obvious problem displayed in core centre, but suspect that the alarm is CPU fan speed related - I am running the AMD supplied Heat sink& Fan assembly.
Anyone have any ideas why this problem has suddenly got worse?

    Hi mcihael ,
Thanks for the tip about Fanspeed.  I have seen it around but never thought i had a need of until now.
I must admit that having all of these extra applications supplied with the motherboard can get a bit confusing - the only real use that Core Center has been to me was the alarm going off letting me know that something serious was wrong!
What's your opinion on case fans?    Should they be EXTRACT, INTAKE or a mixture? Most people i read about say exhaust fans are best to take away the hot air, while others claim intake fans help keep a flow of air around the CPU cooler.

  • K8T Neo FIS2R Won't Recognize HDDs

Here’s my situation.  I am not new to building computers, but new to the AMD Athlon64, MSI boards, and SATA drives.
I purchased the K8T Neo-FIS2R  (601-6702-010) main board.  A single 512 MB DDR memory  stick is installed.  The only card installed is the ATI Radeon 7500 ALL-in-Wonder video card.  I cannot get the system to recognize hard drives.  I have made many changes in BIOS, but have been unsuccessful.
At first, my intention was simply to take my almost new Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 120 GB ATA HDD and install it with the K8T Neo motherboard.  The disk has been previously formatted with Windows XP Home, and has various other programs installed.  It was working fine in my older system.  I put this drive (properly connected to the IDE1 on mainboard), and the K8T Neo would not recognize the drive at all.  In fact, all I received were messages that SATA Raid devices were missing (apparently the Promise controller complaining).  Trying to deactivate the SATA controller via bios did nothing.
Next, I decided to purchase a Seagate 160 GB Barracuda SATA HDD (ST3160023AS-RK), thinking maybe then the system would at least recognize an SATA HDD.  (of course a lot of this shows my naivete’ with newer SATA standards/componets/MBoards)  Initially it was recognized, and I was able to use Seagate’s software to partition the drive and format it.  However, after rebooting and attempting to install Windows XP, the drive was no longer recognized by the system.  On the POST screen, the VIA controller does list it as master device 1 in the SATA.
Okay, here’s what I want:  I want to install the Barracuda 160 GB HDD SATA as my boot drive, and take my slightly older Maxtor HDD and make it a secondary (or slave) drive.  This means a mix of SATA and ATA drives.  Since MSI’s documentation both in manual and the website provides no help (that I can find) on this issue, I need suggestions on what to do.  The only explanation in K8T Neo manual is to create an SATA Raid array.  I do not want to do this.  I simply want the SATA as boot drive, the ATA as secondary (or slave) drive, and for both of them to peacefully coexist!  How do I make the mainboard recognize this?

Promise Scroll down to where I posted and you'll find hopefully all you need.  If you need help, just ask
The error is coming at the Windows installation screen. The drivers already (seemingly) load.
I have tried installing the Promise drivers, although not as you posted in the linked thread. I only have the one SATA drive... do I still need to configure it as RAID?
I'll try this today. In all my years of building computers, I've never had as many problems as I have with this system. This is so frustrating.

  • K8T Neo FIS2R (MS6702) cool n quiet problem

Hi.  I have an AMD64 3000 cpu installed.  The cool n quiet variable frequency is not functioning anymore.  Core Center reports it at 2000mhz all the time.  As a result, it is running hotter than normal and is not as quiet.  I tried the latest bios (ami v2.2), the latest amd64 driver and the latest core center.  The system did not like the newest amd64 driver (shutdown just as windows finished loading) so I went back to the previous versions of everything.  It did work at one time but something must have changed.
    System Specs:
    K8T Neo FIS2R (MS-6702)
    AMD64 3000 socket 754 (clawhammer or newcastle I think)
    chipset K8T800
    bios AMI v1.9
    amd64 driver v1.2.2
    Core Center v1.5.5.0
cool n quiet enabled in bios setup
    dynamic overclocking disabled
    Thanks for any input
    Pete

Ok, this is nuts.  I think its time to clear the cmos.  I'm now using speedfan and even with the max speed setting for the cpu fan at 1% (one percent), the cpu fan runs at around 3800.  Then it drops to zero when the set cpu temp is reached (40c).  There's no in between.  When I start the system, its max'd at around 4400.  I pulled the fan and heatsink to clean them last weekend and it seems that's when all this started.  Perhaps something went awry when I disconnected and reconnected the fan to the board.  The bios version, the amd driver, and the core center version are now all the same as before I pulled the fan.  I'm clearing the cmos.

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R/FSR no POST

I have a K8T Neo-FIS2R/FSR (MS-6702) which is, along with all my other components (I'll list them later), over a year old. It has been running just fine until the other day. I have not modified any hardware or BIOS-settings recently.
The day before yesterday my speakers put out a high-pitched shriek and the screen turned black. I then turned off the computer (it seemed to still be running, fans spinning). As I switched it on it let forth 8 beeps followed by a paus, and then 8 beeps again, over and over. I switched the graphics card for another one, no difference.
I then left it turned off for a few minutes. Then I booted it up again, and voila, it worked fine. Then after a few minutes it died the same way, and when I rebooted it it started beeping again.
Switching graphics card doesn't help. I powered it on without a graphics card plugged in. Then it made 8 beeps, and then silence. The cycle was not repeated, as it was when the card was in.
I then used another motherboard, another CPU and other RAM, same graphicscard and harddrive, and it boots into Windows just fine and seems to be quite stable for the day I've tried it.
I then switch back to the K8T-motherboard with it's CPU and RAM (still same graphicscard and harddrive as the other one), and it boots fine. After almost an hour it dies again. On boot, beeps. Wait a few minutes, boots again, then dies. Beeps next time. Etc.
The 8 beeps apparently mean there is a problem with the video card. I have tested two video cards that both work fine on another motherboard, no difference.
Because it dies after a while when it has rested, I suspect some sort of overheating issue. I put a bigass fan blowing at the motherboard and video card but that didn't seem to do anything. The fan on the video card is clean.
I have hooked up the D-Bracket 2 that accompanied the motherboard. It has some lights flashing depending on what is going on, and it halts on "Early Chipset Initialization", which is phase 2 of 16 (1st being "System Power ON"). When I press the power button, the LEDs on my memory sticks flash for a few seconds (showing activity), and the D-Bracket lights up. Then the memory-LEDs go to rest (inactivity), and the D-Bracket halts. Fans keep spinning but there is no life. No beeps.
After leaving the computer off for the night, I cleared the CMOS. The computer booted and ran fine for a couple of hours, then it suddenly made a noise in the speakers, and the monitor went black. Fans still spinning. The little light at the monitor indicating that it is turned on was flashing, as it does when the computer is off and the monitor is on.
This is the hardware in my system at the moment. I have removed plenty of stuff to rule out other components but even with just this it won't work. No mouse, keyboard or other drives attached, just this.
    CPU: Athlon64 3200+
    Memory: Corsair TWINX1024-3200XLPRO DDR
Power: Thermaltake Purepower Butterfly 480W W0020

    Graphics: Gainward GeForce 6800Ultra 256MB GDDR3 AGP8X, "Ultra/2600 Golden S",
    Motherboard: K8T Neo-FIS2R/FSR (MS-6702)
Harddrive: Seagate Barracuda IV ATA 7200 RPM
    Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 957p
Any ideas, suggestions or questions? I am stumped.

    +12V (17A),
If your graphics card is like mine (see sig) with two power connections at the back you may have stressed the PSU over the last year to it's final end. Borrow or buy another PSU with at least 24 amp on the 12v supply. Your current PSU with only 17 12v amps was bound to fail. Especially since you state you had other hardware at one time. CPU Graphics card, case fanes and drives are all calling on the 12v rail to power them and your PSU just might not have it any more to do the job and the highest draw is at startup.
    Try another PSU.

  • Onboard 5.1 sound noisy - K8T Neo FIS2R

    Hi guys, i'm new here.
Well, i got a K8T Neo FIS2R and the 5.1 sound is noisy. I've tried many different drivers, replaced my 5.1 speakers for new ones and it doesn't work properly at all. I've been using a  2.1 system and it works just fine. Has anyone seen this problem? any advice?
    Thanks in advance
    Kein

LOL OK you can save us time by replying to that end the next time. Thanks.
I know it may seem trivial but I can't count how many times a suggestion was assumed to have been tried and it turned out to be the fix in the end. So if we seem grouchy about getting a reply remember that we aren't the only one's that waste time chasing stuff when no one let's us know what they have tested.
OK back to your problem. There are no magic buttons to push. If you have tried other speakers and drivers then it is likely something on the MB that is causing the problem. It could be a power line somewhere close to a chip or connection, it could be a bad ground. If you have a Sound card handy you could also check it to see if the problem goes away. Otherwise you may have to RMA it.

  • PSU for K8T Neo-FIS2R

What model of PSU has its cooling fans which can be controlled from PWFAN1 and PWFAN2 on the K8T Neo-FIS2R motherboard?
    Kaz

Sorry but there is no real specific one out there that I have ever seen. Most of the Bios options you see have been available since forever with Via Chipsetted boards. However DOT is specific to MSI which is Dynamic Overclocking technolodies. DOT can automatically overclock your voard depending one what your doing. I recommend staying away from it as it can cause as many issues as anything in your rig. And then there is Cool and Quiet which is an AMD 64 Bit CPU specific option to downclock the multipliers for the CPU during Idle Times to save energy and keep the CPU cool. Again it is not really needed.
The rest of the stuff you can use google to find individually or by searching for Award Bios's or Via Chipset Bios settings.
These are way to much for any one person to post a complete guide to here as all the info is readily available elsewhere.

  • Should I flash the bios? K8T NEO FIS2R

Ok... I have a K8T NEO FIS2R mobo.  A couple of friends of mine have been telling me to flash the bios to the most current version...  Then some other people have been telling me that it is too risky and I should hold off untill something goes wrong that I know a bios flash can fix...
I'm just wondering what is the concencious here... should I flash it, or should I stay with the current version I have now(the one that came with the mobo)  I Like to have my computer as up to date as possible, but all the reports of bad flashes have me a little worried.  This is a procedure that I have never done before, and I dont want to mess it up.
If I should flash, Any insight, tips, tricks, special instructions, etc... would be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks!
    Magnum

Thanks guys for the quick responces...  I'm used to not getting a responce from forums for 12-24hrs and here it is less than 24hrs later and I have 10 responces.
I'm not at my computer in question right now, but I am almost positive that my bios is ver1.0.  Same one that came with my mobo.
At this point I am leaning towards flashing...  If basically the only way to mess it up is to have my power fail, then I dont think I will have a problem.  I'll just borrow an UPS from work here to be on the safe side.
hypothetically if i follow the instructions to a tee(windows flash/live update) are there any other ways it can mess it up?  I just want to get a hold on all the places where I could mess it up.
Will live update take me all the way through the procedure, or do I need a separate set of instructions to read off of during the flash?
Also what gear will I need...  floppy disk? anything else?
Sorry about all the questions, just want to make sure I do this right the first time!
    Thanks!

  • 6600GT not working with K8T neo-FIS2R

I recently returned a K8T NEO-FIS2R MB for repair. The problem was that the PS/2 and USB ports were broken. However the MB has been returned and the PS/2 and USB ports work fine. I posted about this several months ago.
Now the AGP port seems to be broken (not the actual slot). I have tried a 6800 Ultra and a 6600 GT (AGP version) GFX card in this slot. Both cards fail at the driver installation point. I have tried driver versions 66.93, 67.02 and 67.03. I also tried 3 versions of the via drivers 451, 453 and 455. Even tried XP with SP1 and SP2. The PC will sometimes BSOD, reset, won't boot into windows. The drivers sometimes install then other times they won't, etc. The problems only seem to be with the drivers for the GFX cards.
The 6600 GT works as I have tried it in another MB without any problems.
I know the memory works fine as I used memtest86+ for a couple of hours on the default settings without any errors and it works in another PC.
The spec of the PC is:
    XP pro
    K8T NEO-FIS2R MB
    512MB corsair XMS at 2.5-3-7-3
    XFX 6600GT
    40gig HDD
    FDD
    Plextor CD writer
    DVD Rom
    PSU is a Q-tec 550W
I know Q-tec PSUs are not up to much from what I have read elsewhere in this forum, but I have had it running in a similar system with the 6800 Ultra installed without any trouble (even with the above MB before it went faulty). I have also tried a 400W PSU, that came with the case. The Voltages on the 12V line are between 12.00 and 12.03 when using the Q-tec PSU.
Has any body else had these problems with the 6600GT in the mentioned MB.
Also, how can I check the serial number on the MB with the label on the box, as this MB that was returned to me looks to “clean” to be the one I sent away for repair.
    Thanks for any help

Hey, I'm glad to see a post on the new Gforce 6600GT AGP card.  I just recently put together a brand new system (see my sig for specs).  System runs great.  The only thing I wanted to do was replace the video card, and after a great deal of anxiety I decided the Geforce 6600GT AGP was the best bang for the buck.
Well I got home, installed the card and never get passed the bios screen.  (shows your processor, memory, memory siz), the screen u hit DEL to go into the bios.
The system doens't lock up, NUM LOCK can still be turned on and off, and CAPS can be turned of and on... but thats it.  Just sits on that screen.  I can't go into the bios either.
what settings do I need to do prior to isntalling this card to get it to work.
Let me know if you all need anymore details to help me out.
oh, I did reset my frequency to 10x200 (which is what I think the 3000+ is supposed to be at).

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R - 3200+ - Mushkin Level 1 RAM: Optimal Memory Settings

    Just got a K8T Neo-FIS2R with a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with 1g (512MB X

    End System roundup:
    www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.html?i=2041
I am having a HUGE problems with memory settings in the BIOS.
On AUTO, the memory is only autodected at DDR200, which I found odd.
I them took memory setting in my old hands and things don't seem much
    better:
    I made these changes:
    MEMCLOCK: DDR400
    BANK INTERVEAVING: AUTO
    BURST LENGTH: 8 BEAT
    CL: 2
    TRCD: 3
    TRAS: 5
    TRP: 2
This was unstable at first and  bumped the DDR Voltage to 2.7, moved
the sticks to DIMM1 and DIMM3 (instead of DIMM2), and it seems stable,
but not very fast. according to Sandra Scores
Any recommendations for Memory Settings?   Why would the MB not
autodecte DDR400 RAM?  I am not looking to overlock...just maximize
the CPU and memory I have.
Maybe I just need to get new memory.  What is the best memory for this motherboard?
    Thanks,
    Steve

I'm running the same mem (see my sig).  Since its PC3500 I attempted to tighten the settings to those you had listed (2,3,2,5).  It was not Prime95 torture test stable at even the stock 200 MHz FSB using these settings.  Upping the voltage to 2.7 did not increase the stability in my system at these settings.  The memory ran perfectly at AUTO settings, but was clocked at 2.5,3,3,8 I believe.
Keep in mind that level 1 is advertised at 2,3,3.  My system is 100% stable at 2.7V for me up to 210 MHz FSB at these settings (I haven't tried any faster).  My TRAS is set to 6.
Hope this helps a fellow Mushkin user

  • K8t neo fis2r - core center not functional after installing sound card

Hi.  I had been using Core Center with Dynamic Overclocking enabled and all was well.  When idle, my amd64 3000+ (2.0ghz), was running at 800mhz.  Under load it would go up to 2100mhz.  But yesterday, I installed an Auzentech x-plosion sound card and after i installed the driver, the dynamic overclocking stopped working, my cpu is running at max all the time.  (The variable fan speed function still works).
I checked the IRQ and there is no conflict, I uninstalled the amd64 driver and core center and reinstalled.  Still does not work.  I uninstalled the auzentech driver, rebooted, and cancelled new hardware wizard.  Then the variable cpu frequency feature worked.  Once I install the driver for the auzentech, dynamic oc stops working.  I was thinking to try another pci slot but it appears to be a software issue rather than a hardware issue.  The new version of Core Center does not work with my board even though msi says it's compatible so I'm still using the one that always worked.  The amd driver is the latest and also always worked.
Has anyone else had a similar problem, perhaps using the auzentech sound card with this board and Core Center?  Or does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Hey guys, I just went to AMDs site to get the dashboard utility mentioned and in the readme, it stated that in XP, the power option needs to be set to portable/laptop.  But in the past, I read that it needed to be set to "always on" and that it is, in fact, what I had it set to before when cool n quiet was working.  Now I change it to "portable/laptop" and it works and set to "always on" doesn't work anymore.  So now Core Center reports I'm at 33c @800mhz at no load.   I don't get it???  I'll have to try an alternate utility just to verify that is indeed working.
btw, QV, I checked system properties, (right-click my computer > properties, or "system" in control panel) and on the "general" tab, it indicates an AMD64 3000+, 2.0GHz.  But I'm pretty certain the clock frequency is dropping now as reported by core center because of the decrease in the cpu temp at idle.  Am I looking in the right place in XP?  I have XP pro, SP2
Again, thanks for the input and Happy New Year
