K8T Neo-FSR showing incorrect CPU temperature
Hello. I recently purchased a K8T Neo-FSR, which came with BIOS v2.2 installed. For some reason, it wouldn't allow me to set my own memory timings (it always used the "safe and sane" SPD values, according to CPU-Z, regardless of any BIOS settings I tried). I wasn't about to sit back and let my expensive new memory go underclocked, so following some advice I found on an obscure German forum, I installed the v7.1 BIOS from MSI's global site. That fixed the timing issue, but now the board is reporting incorrect temperatures for my CPU. It usually fluctuates between 23-26c, but will occasionally rise to nearly 30c and then immediately drop back down again. Case temperature remains stable at 27c. When I first installed the board, the temps were right around 45c, almost 20 degrees higher, which seems a lot more accurate to me (though this was also before I upgraded the crappy heatsink).
Is this anything to be concerned about, and is the CPU temperature supposed to constantly fluctuate like that? I'm worried that if my fan fails or something else goes wrong, the sytem won't react until the temperature is 20 degrees OVER the safe limit. I have a feeling it interferes with the Cool n' Quiet functions, too, though my CPU fan (Thermaltake Venus 7) has its own built-in sensor and adjusts itself automatically anyway.
Aside from the temperature wackiness, the system is rock-solid and runs like a dream. Specs are in my signature.
There are 754 Venice's out there as NewEgg sold them at one point from what I gather as I was looking at what was the best 754 but settled for the Clawhammer.
I have just stopped using CoreCentre on my XP as it started to show extremely erroneous and frightening temps so I ran MBM5 in conjunction as well as used my Cases thermal probes and guess which one was wrong...?
This was after seating and reseating the cooler, CPU, memory many times and it was only on Asetek's forums that reminded me that I should maybe do some independant tests by taping probes on the cpu's board as close to the core as poss, a difference of twenty degrees no less.
CoreCentre seems to have got a bit lost and a tad annoyed as I cross checked after buying the components for a 1/2" inch custom watercooling setup.
Now this is the current temp and voltages I get:
The 45 degree high was me using Prime to "cook" the thermal paste as I had to reseat the Artic Freezer 64 as it had dropped a touch.
My ClawHammer is for some reason one of those that never had a heatspreader which of course leads to difficulties with such coolers as the Freezer 64 Pro. Does anyone know where I can get another spreader or should I just leave it...?
I am not going to o/c this CPU to be honest, since sorting the temps out and once the watercooling is on, 3.2Ghz is plenty good for me for the moment and bearing in mind the Neo's touchyness about settings in BIOS I am very much considering now to roll back the BIOS to 1.9 as it was 2.2 that started causing the problems.
As for the memory timings, my Neo is totally ignoring any attempts to change the timings of my memory, I had to part company with my XMS Crucial sticks because the Neo had all sorts of problems and running some of the best memory at DDR200 was pointless.

MSI K8T NEO-FSR, reporting CPU @ 50c~ at bootup?
Hello, I just replaced my Asus K8V SE Deluxe with a K8T Neo-FSR because of some RAM issues with the Asus, RAM is sorted out fine now with the K8T, at first with the Asus, I was using the stock HSF with the stock thermal compound on it, when I transferred it over to the K8T, I put some Arctic Silver 5, when I booted up, it was reading the CPU (Idle) at around 50c, when before with the Asus I was getting around 36c readings, why is this? I reapplied the arctic silver 5 thinking that was the issue, but it is still the same..anyone know if this is a bug or what? I touch the heatsink, and it's not even WARM..
Btw, my CPU is a Athlon 64 3000+Quote

Depends on the ambient temperature, but that's what I typically get.
weird..how bout on load?

K8T NEO FSR bad bios or bad CPU?
Hi - I just got a K8T NEO-FSR with an Athlon 64 3000 (newcastle) and 512 Meg of Corsair value select memory. I installed everything fine and tried to install a fresh copy of windows xp home but I kept getting a blue screen of death and a registry error (from the CD!!).
I then reformatted my drive and put a copy of windows 2000 pro on it. After updating the drivers, everything seemed to be OK. But - I was getting a few random problems (CD stopped working, freeze, etc). I was going to try to install XP but I thought I should probably upgrade the BIOS first just to make sure that wasn't the problem.
Well - I followed the instructions for updating the BIOS (I've done it before for other systems) and everything seemed to go smoothly until I tried to reboot. Nothing - it powers up but doesn't do anything. I assumed that something must be wrong with the BIOS. I double checked which file I was using A6702VMS.180.
I then tried a BIOS recovery. I reformatted a floppy on a windows XP machine and put a copy of the BIOS that I had backed up before the flash onto the disk named AMIBIOS.ROM. Then I unplugged the power supply and every piece of hardware except the CPU, reset the CMOS, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then I reconnected the floppy and plugged in a PS2 keyboard into the back. Pushed down CTRL and HOME and turned the power on. Nothing. Tried it again with each CTRL key and with the regular HOME key and the keypad. Nothing.
The LED's on the back panel show all 4 red which the manual says is a bad CPU. Could my CPU have died somehow? Did I miss something obvious?
My power supply is an Enermax 350W with 32A on 3.3V, 32A on 5V, and 17A on 12V.
Any thoughts? I'm a little annoyed that I can't find a definitive source for how many amps on each of the rails the main board and CPU need. I've found widely varying advice on all of the boards I've read.
Thanks,
TedQuote
1) The PSU that you have is quite weak on the +12v Rail & could be the cause of your problems, most people on here recommend 20a on the +12v Rail.
I've seen people on various boards throw numbers anywhere from 15A to 30A for the 12V rail. However, I haven't seen anyone quote any hard sources. My back of the envelope computations:
CPU: 89 W (max power from AMD's web site)
MEM: uses 3.3V
Floppy: uses 5V
CD: 20W
RAM: uses 3.3V
HD: 15W
Geforce2 GTS graphics card: 8W
which gives me about 132W on the 12V rail at maximum power usage (which - since I haven't done anything I doubt I've hit). This would be about 11 amps which is easily covered by my power supply. And - the 89W number form AMD is for all the Athlon64 chips of which the 3000 is the very low end so it's probably less than that.
Quote
2) You may have faulty RAM & i would recommend running a memory testing program just to check that is ok.
Could the RAM be faulty even though I had a windows 2000 setup running reasonably well? The BIOS did do a memory check on each startup (I turned that on when I first installed the board).
Quote
As for the system not booting now, sounds like you have a bad BIOS flash & that you will need to get the BIOS reflashed or RMA your motherboard.
I don't think this board supports reflashing - the chip is soldered onto the board. Any idea why the rescue procedure isn't working? -
K8T NEO FSR problems and questions.
I read this in an article on http://www.hardware.no:
"MSI is one of the companies that offer free upgrade to a new motherboard with better
specifications, if you have bought 915P Neo2 Platinum, 915P Combo-FR or 915G Combo FR
in the period of time between 21st and 27th june."
Late in june, I bought myself MSI K8T Neo-FSR motherboard, and an Athlon 64 3200+2.2GHz.
When I run "Core Center", the program shows that my CPU idle temp is 60 Celsius and my
sys temp is 36 degrees, which is COMPLETELY wrong?!?!.
This is very weird, because I have a nice computer case with 5 fans that blow out all
the warm air inside. When I play games, the CPU goes up to 65 degrees and my computer
restarts. This is VERY annoying. How do you turn this off in BIOS settings?
I'm quite frustrated with the thought that my CPU temp. shows 60-70 Celsius.
I have read tons of other forums and I have found out that it's not only me that experience
this problem. I seriously hope that you will fix this bug ASAP.
Does this offer also apply to K8T NEO-FSR? Can I get a free upgrade?
If I don't get my problems fixed, I will take further actions.
My System specifications:
MSI K8T NEO-FSR, Athlon 64 3200+2.2GHz, Asus Geforce 4 Ti 4400, TwinMOS 1024 DDR3200 RAM, Western digital 80+120+80 GB 7200 RPM, Chieftec BX Tower BX-03SL-SL-SL P4 / AMD, 2x papst 120mm fans, 2x 80mm papst fans, 1 fan in the door of the computer case.I never heard MSI was doing such an offer...
Anyway, you need the latest BIOS, that solves the temps reading thing, this happens because AMD changed the CPU a bit.
It's not getting that hot, it's just a reading failure.
A BIOS flash should solve it. -
K8T Neo FSR with Audigy 1 Problem
I just received a major upgrade, for me anyway, last night. ALL I was getting on boot was 4-RED LED lights on the D-Bracket2 connector. I was ready to RMA the WHOLE thing to Tiger Direct, when I decided in one last ditch effort to try again.....I pulled my Audigy, and wham, it booted normally. Now let me describe.
1. I KNOW it's not a power issue, as I had EVERYTHING but Sound and Video removed, and unplugged, including hard drives. The D-Bracket2 LED's were still all-red on boot.....system would not POST.
2. Pulled ALL hrdware from system, except Video and Audigy, same results.
3. Last try, pulled EVERYTHING, including Audigy, and it booted normally.
4. Re-connected everything, except Audigy, re-installed Windows XP SP2, no problems, system runs.
I tried EVERY PCI slot with the Audigy, ALL with the same results; system would not run with it in there. The card was good 15 minutes prior on the OLD Abit Board. (meaning it works.)
ANy ideas???

what shall i do?? please help me.No, you put the jumper on the drive!
You must enable OPT1 (jumper pins 5-6).
However do be warned that your mainboard uses the Via VT8237 southbridge chipset, which has known unfixable issues with SATA 3.0gb/s. You may have luck with the drive jumpered to 1.5gb/s, but it may still not work.

MSI K8T NEO FSR with AMD 64 3200 - Can´t install WIN XP
Hi.
I´m writing you because i have a problem with an MSI K8t-Neo FSR.
The description of my PC:
MSI K8t-Neo FSR
AMD 64bits 3200 (640 cache)
HD 160 SATA Seagate Barracuda
1gb DDR 400mhz
Floppy 3 1/2
CDRW 52x32x52 LG
Video ATI RADEON 9600 XT
The problem is the following:
When I try to install Windows XP, when I press F8 to accept the Terms, it shows me an error message (IO 104 i think) and it hangs up or reboot.
I tried with another two Proccessors and motherboards (same model obviously) but it didn´t work.
Could it be a defectuous production serie of that model????
Or what do you think the problem is????
Thank you very much for your help.
I´ll be waiting for your answer!
Lucas Revale
PF: I´ve already tried updating the BIOS.Thank you all for trying to help me!!!
I've already tried using only te necesary drivers.
I´ve also tried another VGA, another HD, another CDRW, another power supply, and an AMD 64 2800+.
It seems to be that the three motherboards i tried were defectous.
Does anyone has any other idea?!?!?
I´d really aprecciate your help! -
I am helping a new builder with an upgrade from a working system. We installed a K8T Neo FSR and AMD 2800 Retail in an existing, working system system. The current specs are:
WIndows XP Home (all patches)
MSI K8T Neo FSR MB
AMD 64 2800 Retail CPU
1024 Meg Super Talent PC 3200 memory (512x2)
80 M WD HD
Liteon CR-RW/DVD reader
HEC 525 PA ( 3.3V-35A, 12V-18A,5V-14A,)
Nvidiia 5700LE video
Since installing the upgrade the system will not initialize. Sometimes the fans (case and CPU) spin for about 1 second and then shut down and at other times nothing happens at all. I have read the posts about JBAT1 and found it to be apparently misconfigured (two pins nearest the DIMM were connected). When reconfigured (pins farthest from DIMMS connected) nothing at all happens at boot up. I have limited experience with 754 MBs but lengthy experience with K7 on various platforms.
Questions:
The diiagnostic LEDs on the D-Bracket do not light, what does this imply?
Although I have had good previous experience with HEC PS, is it likely that it does not have sufficient 12V current to start the board? Does this board/CPU combo reallly need 20A plus of 12V to initialize as some posts seem to indicate?
Does the lack of diagnostic readout imply failure of either the MB or CPU? If yes, how do I identify which?
I have tried all the usual stuff (running with only one memory stick in slot 1, reseating CPU/looking for bent pins, memory and video reseating and checking all connections). The board appears properly installed on stanchions. How to troubleshoot a shorted MB?
I have another PS (an Antec True Power 430) but haven't tried it yet. Is there a FAQ to help troubleshoot a situation like this? ( yes I have browsed the forum but maybe am not bright enough to find the right section)
All ideas are welcomed.
JoeI am getting nowhere with this fast. As per the previous suggestion I insulated the board from the standoffs with cardboard and retried again. Same thing, fans spin for perhaps one second and then nothing. The D-Bracket never lights. I then pulled an Antec Tru-Power 430 from another working system and tried again, same thing. I think this motherboard has failed. Before I request an RMA anything that I might have missed?
System spec (not the same as my signature which is another MSI machine)
AMD 2800 754 CPU and retail HSF
MSI K8T Neo FSR MB
2x512 Super Talent PC 3200 memory
HEC 475 PS (3.3V 35A, 5V 41A 12V 18A)
WD 80G HD
Nvidia 5700 LE graphics
Liteon CD/RW-DVD
lots of case fans
This board was purchased by the young builder from Newegg who I gather no longer supports RMAs on motherboards. Any comments on RMA service through MSI? I found the link on the website but haven't helped him complet it yet.
Thanks,
Joe -
Sempron 64 3000 on MSI MB K8T NEO - FSR
I have a problem with MB MSI K8T NEO - FSR. When I put on CPU Sempron 2600 SDA2600AIO2BA, it works fine and the MB detect it fine,
but when I put on CPU Sempron 64 3000 SDA3000AIO2BX, the MB not recognize the new processor and reports AMD Unknown Processor.
I have the latest BIOS on the mainboard, but the problem remains. Can someone help me who had the same problem?Cool and Quiet for one. C&Q is not working from my understanding on the Semperon 64's ATM. There is also a fix shown by one other gentleman here in this forum area about removing a file that is associated with C&Q functions. CPUSlowdown or some such. I don't have a Semperon 64 so I can not confirm this though.

Hello!
My system doesn't boot . It power all of the fans and disk. The Power and Hard Disk leds stay lit (no blinking) the D-Bracket shows 3 red leds and one green led (green is on the lower left). I try without any disk units, no cards (just my graphic card which I test on my P4 machine and is OK) and just 1 stick of ram. The sytem was working "normally" except for some sporadics blue screens and reboots and the no NVRAM thing and that my RAM gets automatically reset to 200 (that's why I try the 1.92B BIOS ver) Last thing I remember was flashing the 1.92B Bios using the windows utility and after that kaput! What can I do? are there any procedures to fix this or did I kill my mobo?
Any tips suggestions will be really apreciated, many thanks in advance.

The lower left led is inialising the Keyboard controller. ODD if nothing has been changed.
you can reset the comp by clearing the jbat1 jumper. Switch power off first, page 2-25 of manual. If that does not work make a rescue disk. place file AMIBOOT.ROM on floppy put floppy in drive, reboot and press ctrl + home.
But check the keyboard first.

I am trying to find out how to change the ht link in my bios. I know it is a dinosaur as far as boards go but I'm in a contest and just trying to play around with it. I don't have a setting named HT link like on my 939 board and I'm trying to find out if it is named something else in this particular bios. Can anyone help me out here? Just picked up all the parts today..msi k8t neo-fsr, amd64 3200cpu 450w power supply. 120gig sata drive, dvd burner.. turned it on and nothing. d-bracket shows up as 4 red led's. and the front power led just flashes..
please help.. I need to get this working this weekend...
Thanks,
Mikewell hang on there, 4 lights is proccessor error.
now carefully look at mobo 1st is heat sink doen all the way, you did take plastic off of heatsink, when you put the processor on the board you ligned up the triangles lifted release bar and processor slid right in all nice and easy...then locked bar down, and carfully placed heatsink on and locked it.
now the bad news if you have to take off the heat sink do it slowly,as usually it will rip the processor out ,sometimes damaging pins, and you will have to use artic silver or a new heat sink with a pad, you canot use old pads or goo..it has to be cleaned off. ther is a good article on that one.
@psu
i would say psu is limited on upgrades..at 18a but if you want to return your new one just say you got it for an hp, act kind of sumb ,and say that it takes a whole different plug and everything, that usually works...
btw what kind of memory do you have ..non ecc i hope. -
[Athlon64] MSI K8T Neo FSR / Early Chipset Initialization
Hi There,
My MSI K8N Neo Platinum has a broken LAN interface, i don't have the papers of it so I can't send it for RMA. So i bought a MSI K8T Neo FSR.
But there is a problem, when i power up the system, the fans are spinning, the hard disk spins up and the CDRW/DVDROM drives are working. The only thing the system does is hanging at the "Early Chipset Initialization" state accoding to the D-Bracket.
- Tried an other VGA Card > No result (Radeon 9200, Club3D)
- Bought other memory (I do have 1GB now , but still no result)
- Tried resetting the BIOS > No result
- Tried removing the RAM, the system beeps there's no RAM in the system, but when i put it back in the system wouldn't boot again.
- Tried to boot up only with R9200, CPU and RAM, and still it won't work.
- Tried to boot outside the case, but still no result.
I tried my processor, memory, PSU and vga card (6800LE) back in my K8N system and it works great, so i don't think my PSU is too weak.
And I aint thinking that my motherboard is broke, it still beeps without memory in it.
I am getting really confused, i'm out of money now so i can't buy some new stuff.
Anyone ideas?
Specs in signature. (PSU 18A @ 12V), sorry for my bad english.Quote from: fafner on 03-May-05, 20:55:16
Why don't you get a PCI network card for the K8N system? No need to fuss around with a new mb just to get a LAN connection.
Don't want to use PCI-Cards
Quote
Have you tried removing the RAM and then doing a Bios reset? Sometimes things get sticky if the RAM is still in place during a Bios reset.
I would also unplug anything that is not entirely needed to boot so you can simplify the problem.
Another hint. As the RAM controller is inside the CPU the system will not do anything right without RAM. The CPU will imediately hang.
Just tried a BIOS reset without RAM in the system, the system won't boot. Only the CPU, VGA card and the memory is placed. Only the 4pin 12v and the 20 pin is connected.
It just won't work, maybe the board is dead? -
G41M-P25 / HW monitor F71889F - incorrect CPU temperature readings?
My old mainboard blew up (literally, the capacitators leaked) and I had it replaced with a G41M-P25. The tech guy also put a new CPU cooler on the board because for whatever reason he decided that my old one wouldn´t fit. From then on my PC became extremely unstable, according to various monitor programs the CPU temperature was ca. 60°C in idle mode and went up to 85°C (!) within 2 minutes with full CPU load then the board would shut down.
I went back to the store and complained and got a stronger cooler. The system runs stable now, but the CPU temperature readings are still quite high: ca. 50°C in idle, up to 68°C with full load. I double-checked the values in the BIOS monitor and it shows the same temperatures. But the heat sink is cool (way below body temperature) and when I touch the spot where it is sitting on the CPU it is cool, too.
So... what are the chances that the HW monitor is reporting an incorrect CPU temperature? Is there any known issue with the mainboard G41M-P25 and the built in HW monitor Fintek F71889F? SpeedFan also reports quite high temperatures for "temp2" under full load (up to 80-90°C), which seems to be the mosfet temperature - but I know that SpeedFan is not completely to be trusted. I just worry about the CPU temperature, according to the Intel datasheet it should be ca. 63°C at most.
My system:
Mainboard MSI G41M-P25
CPU Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz
The Pentium D is known for getting hot fast, but on the other hand the cooler is already pretty strong and like I said a touch test revealed that the area near the CPU is way below body temperature, so nowhere near 68°C. In comparison the temperature reported for my graphics card is 50-60°C which seems to be correct because it actually is hot and the air surrounding it is warm, too. Should I just ignore the temperature readings? Or is this a problem which can possibly be fixed with a BIOS update? Or maybe complain again and have the mainboard replaced?Well, I used Speedfan. Problem is when under load temp2 hits about 80°C thermal throttling occurs which makes my processor useless for gaming. Because of that, I changed processor for my old P4 3,0GHz and OC'ed it a little (@3,27GHz). Temps are similiar, but lower than 80°C. Here is log from Speedfan after 2 mins CPU torture:

Hi
My Computer is having problems booting. Two days ago i went to boot my computer and all the fans started up and everything seemed fine, but then nothing happened at all, but my computer was still running (cpu fan is running, power suppy fan running, red light on tower has some activity at the begining but then nothing)(my monitor light is flashing like it does when the computer is off) , so I turned off the computer by the button. Then i rebooted the system and everything worked fine. Today I went to boot my computer and this happened again, but now it won't boot at all. I have had this motherboard since january and I have never had a problem before. Any ideas of what is going on? I am assuming that it is something with bios, but I have no clue what. Any help would be appreciative.

I have already unplugged any devices that are not needed during startup, I still have the same exact result, I tried to update the BIOS but it didn't read the drive because i'm assuming it doesn't know the boot order because that all comes the BIOS, so this is was leads me to think its something with the BIOS and not my hardware. My computer has a boot manager, I beleive its OSN??? This sits on my Maxtor drive with windows xp and solaris10 sits on the other Hard drive. Is there any more information you need?
