K8T-Neo2 (939) mobo + RAM problem

Hi there..sorry if this is covering old ground with this mobo but here goes :(
I've had my MSI board for about a year and a half now running with 1gig(2x512mB) of Hynix PC3200 DDR400 SDRAM.  I've recently decided to upgrade to 2gigs of ram and after fiddling with a 1gig stick that didn't want to work I grabbed another pair of Hynix 512mB sticks.  I've tried all manner of configurations to get all four DIMMs working but to no avail.  When the ram is placed old_old_new_new i get a fail to POST and a top left Green light on the diode with three reds (does that make sense) which means early chipset initialisation according to the manual.
When I place old_new_old_new the machine POSTS, gets to the windows loading screen, then goes black, flicks and stalls.
I've followed the instructions in the manual but it pretty much says I should be able to place the *identical* sticks in all 4 DIMMs without a problem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated :( :(
System:
MSI K8T-Neo2 939 (BIOS 3.30)
AMD Athlon64 3000+
Antec 350W PSU
Hynix PC3200 DDR400 SDRAM (currently works with 2x512mB)
Hope thats enough information..

Several things.
You may have the wrong Bios for your CPU core but to determine that we need to know which Bios and CPU core you have.
Your PSU is way to lite to handle the load. You need 24 or more amps on the 12v rail and no 300w will have that.
You can not use three sticks of ram ever on this dual channel board. Actually it is the CPU that forces that limit as the memory controller is inside of the CPU. You can use 1, 2, or 4 sticks but never 3.
Memory should be matched and 4 sticks can force you to run at DDR333 so best to go with 2 - 1gb sticks in any case.
Mixing Memory make and model rarely works as each model will have somewhat different chips and timings. Stay with memory that is match for dual channel to work right.

  • K8T Neo2 V2.0 SATA-Problem

    Hi Folks,
I got a "problem" with my K8T Neo2 V2.0. At first I had 3 IDE-drives, but I needed a new DVD-burner to read double-layer discs. So I bought a SATA-Drive, plugged it in and it worked good. (VIA 5.13A hyperions). After that I decided to go for a new, bigger, faster harddisk .. also SATA. I wanted to profit from the speed so I made a clean install of Windows XP on that new SATA-drive. BIOS was set to IDE and the Windows-setup recognized the drive correctly without an driver from floppy. Then I used the newly released 5.14A Hyperions and the strangeness began. Suddenly the safe-removal-icon for the SATA drives in the taskbar was gone, no more hot-plug capabillity I thout. I wanted to install a game from DVD and I realized darn slow read-speed from the new DVD-drive. I read only with 3x-speed and double-layer DVDs with 2x. I made a repair-install of Windows XP an rolled back to the 5.13A Hyperions and now my safe-removal-icon and the normal read-speed is back - but now sometimes I get an "program-lag". When I close a programm and want to open an other, or just a menu or something, sometimes the PC don't react for 1-2 seconds.
Any suggestions? Any knowledge about SATA-behavior on the K8T Neo2 V2.0? (or the VIA Hyperions?)

    Well here are some specs:

    1x IDE DVD-Drive Pioneer A06S

    Creatice SB Live! 5.1
    PSU Enermax 350 Watt (EG365AX-VE / 3,3V=32A; 5V=32A, 12V=26A)
Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed on SATA-HDD
The Hyperions from the MSI-Driver CD also don't work (same no-hot-plug-problem).
In the BIOS the SATA-channels are configured as IDE, I never needed a driver floppy for XP-install.
The system event-log only shows one failure "loading of boot- or systemdriver viamraid failed". When I had my old XP install on the IDE drive (with installed 5.14A hyperions) the VIA V-Raid utility was installed and could be started, the hot-plug-ability was working as I plugged in the DVD-Recorder. Then I installed XP on the new SATA-HDD (with plugged in dvd-recorder) and the problems came up. Also now no via vraid-utility is installed.

  • K8t neo2-FSR random restart problem

    Hi.
Yesterday I bought k8t neo2-FSR and AMD64 3000+. System restarting randomly. I found that agp and lan controller sharing same IRQ. I disabled the LAN and onboard audio from bios. Update bios to 3.3. Now there is no IRQ conflict. But it is still restarting randomly. I've checked the voltages wth MSI CORE CENTER. there is no problem.
    Any ideas?

  • K8T NEO2 dual core upgrade problems

Hi Everyone hope someone can help here I have just purchased a dual core 4200 socket 939 for my 6702e it has been running fine on my 3200 the 4200 is the one with the 2 512k cache if that helps.
I have the latest bios through msi update think 9.40 so here is my issue. As I have stated this runs no problems at all with my single core 64xp but once I put the new processor in no boot or anything not even an error beep, all the indicator lights on the back panel go amber. I have cleared the cmos and installed 1 stick in the second purple slot 1 gig still nothing.
Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Is the X2 4200+ new or did you buy it used from eBay or some such? What does it show for BIOS version at the upper left when you boot the PC? I ask this just to confirm you do indeed have 9.4 BIOS.
Make a signature with PC information. Also include specs for PSU from label on it, see my sig. example of what info to provide.  By making signature your specs will show in every post you make.
    To create signature:
Click on PROFILE above (near top of this page) and then in your "Profile" what I show in red below, scroll down to "Signature" and enter your specs in the box and then click on "Change profile" button on the bottom.
Rebooted to make sure hehe yepper 9.4 bios
Also fixed signature to the best of my knowledge.
Thanks again for the reply and yes this is a used processor off of ebay reputable seller with no negatives so he has a DOA clause but just trying to trouble shoot this so I don't have egg on my face before I ship it back

  • K8T Neo2 $$$ spent on ram for nothing :( help please

:sigh: Any way I've upgraded from some generic DDR400 to a pair of Corsair Value Select Modules (their 1GB kit) now when I try to run this ram in dual channel mode (should work right their the same type) My computer won't boot just sits there. I've tried every singel memory combanation. Worse still the only way to make my computer boot is to have both modules in ram bank 1 and 2 but this makes them run in Single Channel mode and drops the speed to 333mhz  To say i'm angry would be an understatement since I've tried all day to get this stuff to work knowing that i've basically blow this money (the only money I had to upgrade) it's annoying since I could have just got a big stick of dumb generic ram and it would have been faster.
    [other specs
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (venice)
    Geforce 6
    ya ya ya.]
    ok so what to do
    (1) Would updating the Bios help on MSI's site it goes from AMI ver 3.3 to like 9.2 but I can only get 3.3 since live update will only detect that as the latest DOH [hell if someone thinks it's worth it I would try it manually]
    (2) is their any way to stop the ram from trying to go to dual channel so I could at least just run DDR400 single
    (3) did I buy a lemon of a Mobo and am I

Use Live update to actually create the Bios Flash Floppy. However do not let Live update start the flash after it makes the disk. Just stop at that point and then go here; http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=608&kind=1 to get the 9.1 Bios. Once you have it rename it to AMIBOOT.ROM and replace that file on the floppy with the one you just renamed.
Go into Bios, Set Optimized Defaults and make sure Boot Block Virus Protect is shut down. Then boot from the floppy and follow the directions. Once it flashes you can restart and set Bios back up. Then boot. Windows will reload some drivers and your golden. Then you move your RAM back to slots 2 and 4 and you will have dual channel.
One thing I do stress is that the very first operation you should do once you have flashed is to set optimized defaults in Bios as your very first operation. That does help your setup a bunch and makes sure you will have a smooth setup path from there.

  • Will the MSI K8T Neo2 FIR support what I have?

Well, I bought an abit av8 mobo, hoping to make my new happy computer system..  Turns out, after I built the thing, my happiness ended...  I tried basic setup-1 dimm on each bank, nothing, same POST code.  So, I RMA'ing the mobo and getting a MSI K8T Neo2 FIR mobo, hoping that it WILL work (a bit more, but worth it).  Will it support what I have right now?
    1 gig Crucial PC3200 Ballistix
1 WD 74 GB Raptor HDD
    1 Maxtor 80 IDE HDD
1 XFX GeForce 6800 (it says minimum is a 300w PSU)
1 Thermaltake 480w Silent Purepower (+12 rail is 18a...  mm...  ouch...)
    1 Thermaltake Venus 12 HSF
    1 AMD 3500 Skt 939
    1 Nec DVD+RW/-RW DVD burner
    1 Mitsumi Floppy Drive
    4 CoolerMaster Green LED fans
    4 temperature controlled crystal fans
    1 Blue LED fan
I think I might have to upgrade the PSU...

Nobody can garantee you that it works you have to pay s.o. to take risk or risk it yourself.
Well I'd just try it, you'll always find a friend that can lend you a stick of ram for a day or two.
I was working in a computer store when I got my rig and I tried 4 different kinds of memory till everything worked perfectly.
I just wanted to warn you, not to frighten you.
Moreover you could check MSIs memory compatibility list....

  • MSI K8T Neo2 F 939 pin, any known video or other driver issues?

Using a MSI K8T Neo2 F, AMD 64 3500+ winchestor, 1gb DDR400 3200 memory, New WD 740GD SATA HDD, ATI 9800 GT Pro 256 videocard. Fresh XP Pro SP2 install with all the update, latest Via 4 in 1s.
Seems like my problems began when I upgraded video drivers to either Cat 4.9s or 5.1s (ATI Radeon 9800 GT Pro 256) in order to get Doom3 running as it wouldn't run on the v 3.4 drivers that came on the cd-rom with the videocard.
HL2 would play fine with those old drivers. After upgrading to newer drivers, HL2 and Doom 3 (which now at least plays) won't play for more than 5 minutes yet other games will. The same videocard (perhaps 3 months old now) with cat 4.9 drivers ran perfectly in my old system so I know the videocard's still OK.
I can use a restore point prior to installing the newer drivers BUT that doesn't solve the problem as to why I can't use the newer drivers.
I've heard where some have problems with XP SP2 vs SP1. Anyone here have opinions on that?
I have spare HDDs so I can use one with another fresh XP install, even try just SP1 if that'd matter? Doing that would eliminate hardware as being an issue.
It's now not just games either, it'll crash doing Turbotax and other (not demanding) times when not gaming. Games put alot of demand on any system.
Have also tryed another PSU, now an Antec Truepower 430W vs a cheaper brand 550W. Not heat related as I've tryed this with a house fan blowing on high directly at the mobo, cpu side (cover's off).
I've been trying to solve this for about a month now and it's very annoying.
I ran Memtest for 8 hours last night, no errors so the memory's OK. I'm now running another test program called Prime95 via advice from someone at Anandtech.com. http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=32&threadid=1513208
If ANYONE here has seen anything like this relating to this motherboard (which I suspect might be a problem?), please share your thoughts.
                   Thanks

Can you explain where I'll find "VPU recover (adapter settings)"? In display settings or ATIs cat. control center, guessing? I'm at work now but will check that soon.
      AGP fast-write has been off.
As for going back to older video drivers, it did seem OK with the old Cat. v3.4 drivers that came on the videocards driver cd-rom and played HL2 fine with those drivers HOWEVER, Doom3 doesn't run with those older drivers and needs the newer drivers to function.
When it crashes, the screen usually goes to black (not BSOD). Sometimes it'll just freeze with skipping sound for a few seconds before going black, sometimes it'll reboot but usually I just reboot it. Can't 3 finger solute to task manager or Esc out of it either.

  • K8T Neo2 socket 939 and Sempron??

I just got a K8T Neo2 board in my hands, it's a socket 939 board... You knew that..
A sticker on the box says that it supports AMD Sempron CPU, my thought is HOW?  I've only seen Semprons with Socket A and Socket 754, never a 939.
Any info at all on this?
    Anders.

Hmm.. No matter how I try to figure out that thought, I can't see the solution?  If I headed a large corp. and bought 200+ mobos to use with Sempron and I couldn't assemble them, I'd probably strangle the closest MSI representative..  The worst part is that I can't find ANYTHING about this, not inside the box, not on AMD's site and not on MSI's site.  Only that damned label on the mobo box..

  • K8T Neo2 + 4GB RAM + W2K= Freeeze...

Have installed brand new machine to run FEM analyzes. Needs LOTS of RAM to do that.
    This is my hardware:
    K8T Neo2
    2x Twinmos PC3200 2048MB dual pack (4 x 1GB RAM) (CL3)
2x SATA disks running in RAID 0
    Geforce 6800GT
    CD ROM etc
    Hiper HPU-4R480: 480W +5V-32A,+12V - 18A+16A, -12V-0.8A,+5VSB-2.5A,+3.3V-28A
With any RAM chip installed alone (RAM = 1GB) and any combination of pairs - (RAM=2GB) dual channel or single channel everything works great!
But 4GB installed gives me problems with network, video etc.
    My question is:
Will 4GB work using Win 2000 or Win XP Pro - Ever?!? Or should this work? Is my problems a windows problem or a hardware problem?
    Does anyone know?
    Thanks!

It should, U might need a bios flash, what version are you on.
Is it possible to run the 4 sticks without the vid card, or another card ?
Can u run it in single channel ?
If all af the sticks work in together in dimm 1 and 3 in dual channel, u can rule out the memory as cause.
Twinmos has caused problems in the past. Imho they should be over now..

  • K8T Neo2 hang-up problem?

    Hello all!
Just purchased my first MSI motherboard a few weeks ago...and am experiencing a very trivial problem.
The system seems to benchmark fine (see signature)...although my scores are not as high as I thought they would be. In comparison to my former Socket 754 based 3000+ Athlon64/Albatron mobo (K8T800 based)/Geil PC3200 PC3200 DDR....it is only very marginally faster. I thought the upgrade to Socket 939/Dual Channel would give me a bigger boost than it did. Anyway....
My key word was BENCHMARKS. I think alot of my minorly improved benchmarks could be attibuted to my addition of a 6600GT video card (replacing a 9800Pro) as opposed to the CPU/mobo upgrade. My system seems to actually perform SLOWER in Photoshop. Its simply not as responsive. My instincts tell me it is a IDE Hard drive issue...but I'm asking to see what others may think.
Upon bootup, my system hangs for a second or two after windows starts. The mouse kind of jerks around a bit. I have already disabled pretty much every start-up program that I could.
With my old system: As soon as windows started, I was rocking and rolling...It ran wonderfully.
Now: I have to give my system an extra 10 seconds to do whatever its still doing.
My drives are configured as such:
    Primary IDE: 80GB Western Digital SE (7200rpm, 8mb cache),   SLAVE: Lite-On DVD-Rom
    Secondary IDE: 30GB IBM Deskstar 75GXP (7200rpm),   SLAVE: Lite-On DVD+-RW
My Windows Paging file is located on the IBM Deskstar (Ive read that making a permanent Page file on a seperate drive can give a good performance boost. I verified this with my old system in which is did give a great boost...especially in Photoshop)
My only other change is that I am using that older IBM Deskstar as my secondary drive. With my older system, I was using a 80GB Western Digital SE as my secondary/paging file drive.  (That drive, along with all my other former components have been retired to my wifes computer)
Do you think that this older IBM drive could be my problem? Do you think it would also be responsible (somehow) for the hang-ups that I experience when Windows first boots?

    Yes....
Fresh install of WinXP Pro SP2
    ...and all drivers current
...on latest BIOS (just flashed last week...to try and remedy the problem. No change)
I ran my Memtest a few weeks ago...and as I said, no problems as stock settings.
After AndersN brought it up again...I figured I would re-test it with the latest BIOS.
ERRORS! Within the first hour. Dang...I feel dumb now. As I said earlier. I did run memtest for 10 hours with no problems a few weeks ago.
So now I think I am going to replace the ram with something more high end. (suggestions? I want best bang for the buck...but would like to get some solid CL2)
I could see a ram problem being linked to instablility.....and possibly be the reason to my "less responsive" feel when working in Photoshop....but doo you really think that the memory could be the reason for the hang-up that I'm having at boot?
THANKS for all the help thus far!

  • Problem with my older K8T Neo2-Fir or my bios?

    Hi there Friends
Can someone help me with a problem i got. I have installed this video card:
    Sapphire Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB DDR3 / AGP / 2xDVI / TV-OUT
On this older motherboard: K8T Neo2-Fir [Gbe Lan;IEEE1394, SATA RAID] Socket 939.
Do I need a Bios upgrade because this board seams only supporting max 256mb of video memory. Doesn`t this motherboard and bios version supporting 512 mb?
What should I doing to be able to change my settings in bios to the correct size for the memory. From 256 to 512 mb
This is my bios: Amibios Bios 9.10
Someone help me with this problem

Thats correct, and i want to setting the right memory size in bios, but i cant doing that in my bios. The maximum value i can choice is 256mb. Do you understand wath i mean? Why cant i change this settings to more than 256mb? Is this because this bios are not supporting more than 256mb? (sorry for my bad english)
"Thats correct, and i want to setting the right memory size in bios, but i cant doing that in my bios."
That do NOT setup VGA memory size...
"The maximum value i can choice is 256mb. Do you understand wath i mean? Why cant i change this settings to more than 256mb?"
because there no need to be more than 256...
"Is this because this bios are not supporting more than 256mb?"
that setting doesn't affect VGA memory size...(you can't change VGA memory size, its fixed...) for your VGA with 512MB memory you should apply 64MB for AGP aperture size.

I installed 2000 and used the default floppy for the sata/raid setup. Once in 2000 I clicked "yes" to install the raid drivers and the system hung at the next boot right on the w2k logo screen (progress bar @ 1/2 way).
    Try 2)
I installed 2000 and when the raid driver came up as "not signed...etc" in the installation process I clicked "not to install it" and the computer went bsod on me after the reboot from the install. (Could not find drive - my guess is due to a lack of a driver for the raid partition)
But with the raid driver not being the correct version (I used the floopy from the box) it hangs after the install of the "default" raid driver in w2k.
    Try 3)
Install 2000 and when on the 2000 desktop  and raid screen comes up I installed it then said "no" to the reboot and placed my upgrade version of xp in. All is well until it hits the xp logo in setup and the screen freezes and hd actiyity goes dead. I wait 15min before i gave up.
    Sooooo
My guess is that I need to have a 2000 driver for the raid on this board. If this is the case how do I get one/find one and how do I make it
"bootable" for the system. Please take note that my 2k cd is just 2k without ANY updates. It is very old but right now it is all that I have (besides the upgrade version of xp pro). If I have to integrate the wk2 cd+updates please let me know and please tell me how to do it froma wk2 desktop (or point me to a website).
Thanks in advance for the hlep!
Until you all post me back....

Well thanks for all of the help (crikets chirp) but I did the best thing I could with this motherboard. Send it back. No one should have to go through this kind of crap just to get a motherboard to run. Thisi product does not have quirks it has major issues. I mean look at the size of this forum and how much of it has to do with things that should be a no brainer for a manf like msi or nvidia.          Off with the eng heads! :guillotine:
I am going to go back to a good old via mainboard. While you all are sitting around WONDERING if your sound will work or if your ethernet will go out in the next 30 seconds I will be off playing on my game servers in bliss on my new mobo. Best of luck and I hope the neo2-939 gets its place in the "worst mobo" hall of fame. Bye bye bey........heloooo Abit

  • Small problems : K8T Neo2-F v2.0

    Hi there !
I just got and build yesterday my K8T Neo2-F v2.0 with Athlon processor, and had some problems mounting the board.
First problem : I have a Lian Li PC V1000 case, and this case is coming with frontal connectors :
    - Power LED, which is a 3 pins connector (with only pins 1 and 3 wired) ... so where do I connect this, since on the mainboard, this is a 2 PIN connector as far as I see ?!?
    - Power SW : I have connected this ... but what is it used for ?!?
    - USB2.0 : 2 USB front connectors that I connected to the JUSB1
    - IEEE 1395 : This is also a front connector for Firewire (I think) with SHIELD, VP, VP, TPB-, TPB+, VG, VG, TPA- and TPA+ ... where do I connect this ??
Also, I have frontal audio out and in, but it is said that If I connect it to the mainboard (where there are default jumpers), the output will not be redirected anymore to the back panel ? So it means we can't have both front and rear connecors enabled for audio ?
Otherwise, The PC started fine. I went to the BIOS and saw the CPU Temp to 20 degrees (If I remember well ...) ... just need to re-install windows on the main drive.
Also, I have 1 boot drive and 1 data drive in IDE (That are recognized by windows), but also a data drive with SATA, that is not recognized yet by windows ... I guess I just need to press the magic key during boot process to enable RAID, right ?
    Many Thanks for your help,
    cdelecole

Its kinda sorted now,  basically moving all dvdroms onto an addon ide card, and the system now boots everytime.
Its been a weird problem, and I suspect a bios issue, but as the system is now working my friend is happy.

  • MSI K8T Neo2 slow SATA problem

    Hello members,
I do have a MSI K8T Neo2 mainboard with Via chipset. The board supports SATA 150. AFAIK this means it should support transfer rates up to 150 MB/s.
Now Ive bought a SATA3 SSD with over 500 MB/s. Because SATA 3 is downcompatible to SATA 1 its working so far.
The only problem is I expected 150MB/s but I do only get about 115 MB/s with benchmark programs like HD Tune and AS SSD Benchmark in sequential read.
I do have the latest drivers and bios updates but it seems MSI SATA controllers is very slow.
Can anyone help me getting it faster?

    Thank you.
Does this mean in praxis I dont get 150 MB/s ?
Is this general or only MSI specific?
