K8T Neo2 socket 939 and Sempron??

I just got a K8T Neo2 board in my hands, it's a socket 939 board... You knew that..
A sticker on the box says that it supports AMD Sempron CPU, my thought is HOW?  I've only seen Semprons with Socket A and Socket 754, never a 939.
Any info at all on this?
Anders.

Hmm.. No matter how I try to figure out that thought, I can't see the solution?  If I headed a large corp. and bought 200+ mobos to use with Sempron and I couldn't assemble them, I'd probably strangle the closest MSI representative..  The worst part is that I can't find ANYTHING about this, not inside the box, not on AMD's site and not on MSI's site.  Only that damned label on the mobo box..

Thanks! Which immideately makes my wonder what "Red Pockets stickies" are...    Remember, I'm not a natively speaking English person...

  • Neo2 w/Socket 939 and nForce3 - discontinued?

    Hello:
I'm pretty new to this, so some of my questions might have obvious answers that I just haven't been able to find.
Currently building a machine for home use, but have not yet purchased a motherboard, though I had decided on MSI. The particular model I was thinking of was the K8N Neo2 Platinum. I have heard, though, that this model is being discontinued. Many distributors still have the K8N Neo2-F, but some seem to be out of stock.
The thing is, I need a chipset that has good Linux compatibility -- and as far as I know, the nForce4 is not yet there, but the nForce3 has stable Linux drivers. I'd also like a socket 939, but it seems like all the socket 939 boards are coming with the nForce4 chipset.
So -- does anyone know if MSI is going to continue making a Socket 939 mainboard with the nForce3 chipset?
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Doug,
The K8N Neo2 Platinum is still listed on the current list of Mobos on the MSI website and pricewatch still shows quite a few vendors still selling it.
    Thanks for answering.
What you say is true. But of all the vendors selling it, the only one who has it in stock is selling it as an OEM piece "with a COMPAQ branded bios splash screen".
I'm still wondering if this board or the Neo2-F (still widely available) will continue to be made, or if MSI will continue making a socket 939/nForce3 board.
Eh...I can always bite the bullet and live with not-so-great Linux support for a while with the nForce4.
    Thanks again.

  • K8T Neo-V (s754) and Sempron 2600+ don't work?

    Hi All,
I just bought a MSI K8T Neo-V (s754) and a Sempron 2600+ CPU (boxed). The combination of the 2 should work according to the "cpu support"-page" of MSI.
The installation went smoothly, but when I power up the pc, it won't start. The CPU-fan starts running, but the screen never shows anything and the HD-led is burning continuously, but that's it, nothing else...
I checked all connections twice, but everything seems to be connected OK.
Someone told me to update the BIOS, but how to do that when the pc doesn't even start and will it help (if it's possible) ?
Is this a common problem with that motherboard and CPU ?
Anyone have an idea how to solve this?
    Thanks!
    Steven

Sure it can be. However newer does not mean more powerful. Keep in mind that Socket A systems rarely use the 12v rail and even older Pentiums use very little. Newer Pentiums and all A64's use massive amounts of 12v as that is what the MB'
s for them regulate practically all voltages for the CPU';s and other chips on the MB from. We need to have more 12v than earlier systems did. Today some PSU makers make PSU's for our bigger rigs but a lot of them make them for older systems that are still sold in higher numbers than the latest rigs like what you have.
Forget the older use of wattage to determine the size of a PSU that you have always known. Today it is all about the 12v rail.
OK that said see if a freind has a big PSU you can test yours with. That may be a large part of your problem. We have countless examples of systems failing here for having less than what they need for power and 18a is about minimal for folks that have a smaller A64 rig without using todays vid cards that also demand even more 12v.

  • MSI K8T Neo2 F 939 pin, any known video or other driver issues?

Using a MSI K8T Neo2 F, AMD 64 3500+ winchestor, 1gb DDR400 3200 memory, New WD 740GD SATA HDD, ATI 9800 GT Pro 256 videocard. Fresh XP Pro SP2 install with all the update, latest Via 4 in 1s.
Seems like my problems began when I upgraded video drivers to either Cat 4.9s or 5.1s (ATI Radeon 9800 GT Pro 256) in order to get Doom3 running as it wouldn't run on the v 3.4 drivers that came on the cd-rom with the videocard.
HL2 would play fine with those old drivers. After upgrading to newer drivers, HL2 and Doom 3 (which now at least plays) won't play for more than 5 minutes yet other games will. The same videocard (perhaps 3 months old now) with cat 4.9 drivers ran perfectly in my old system so I know the videocard's still OK.
I can use a restore point prior to installing the newer drivers BUT that doesn't solve the problem as to why I can't use the newer drivers.
I've heard where some have problems with XP SP2 vs SP1. Anyone here have opinions on that?
I have spare HDDs so I can use one with another fresh XP install, even try just SP1 if that'd matter? Doing that would eliminate hardware as being an issue.
It's now not just games either, it'll crash doing Turbotax and other (not demanding) times when not gaming. Games put alot of demand on any system.
Have also tryed another PSU, now an Antec Truepower 430W vs a cheaper brand 550W. Not heat related as I've tryed this with a house fan blowing on high directly at the mobo, cpu side (cover's off).
I've been trying to solve this for about a month now and it's very annoying.
I ran Memtest for 8 hours last night, no errors so the memory's OK. I'm now running another test program called Prime95 via advice from someone at Anandtech.com. http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=32&threadid=1513208
If ANYONE here has seen anything like this relating to this motherboard (which I suspect might be a problem?), please share your thoughts.
                   Thanks

Can you explain where I'll find "VPU recover (adapter settings)"? In display settings or ATIs cat. control center, guessing? I'm at work now but will check that soon.
      AGP fast-write has been off.
As for going back to older video drivers, it did seem OK with the old Cat. v3.4 drivers that came on the videocards driver cd-rom and played HL2 fine with those drivers HOWEVER, Doom3 doesn't run with those older drivers and needs the newer drivers to function.
When it crashes, the screen usually goes to black (not BSOD). Sometimes it'll just freeze with skipping sound for a few seconds before going black, sometimes it'll reboot but usually I just reboot it. Can't 3 finger solute to task manager or Esc out of it either.

The big reason behind the move from 754 to 939 was mostly to incorporate dual channel memory which give the CPU's that much more strength in the market. In a year or so we will all be looking for DDR3 and this will all change once more.

  • Issues with K8N Neo4 Platinum Socket 939 and Athlon64 3000+ Venice

Hello everyone, I am planning a long overdue upgrade of my system. Right now I'm looking at the K8N Noe4 Platinum (non SLI) mobo with a Athlon 64 3000+ Venice CPU.
I haven't seen any posts saying NO DON'T PUT THESE TOGETHER but then maybe I've missed something. Any comments would be appreciated, if you know if any problems that seem common between these two please let me know. Thanks!

there is no problem with them.Just make sure if you can that it will come with the latest Bios that full support Venice core.If not ,then it is easy to update it afterwords.
Just also make sure that with you upgrade that you will have a real good PSU more than 450W or/and with 26-35 A on the +12V rail.

  • Socket 939 and new ati card...

Got a fx-57 and 4 gigs of ram.. was wondering if the new ati 4850 would be held back by my current setup

ok well never mind on that... 4850 is pci-e 2.0 x16 and mine is just pci-e x16, so with that said what is the best card out there for me? the 8800 gt or the radeon 3870?  or maybe another model?

  • [Athlon64] K8T NEO2-F motherboard and memory problem. Please help :(

I just recently built my first computer and everything seemed to be working fine.  However, my two RAM chips had corrupt memory sectors so I had to replace them.  Upon buying 4x256mb chips to replace the 2x512mb chips, I discover that 1 & 2 DIMM slots worked and the 3 & 4 DIMM slots do not.  When i try to put RAM chips in there (which work when put in slots 1 & 2) the computer will not even start up. I've tried diff. combinations of slots, even using the old chips (which work but causes programs to crash occationally). But nothing seems to make DIMM slots 3 & 4 to work.  Any ideas?  Thanks for the help.

How about giving complete specs. I am pretty sure I have an answer that will fix you up but I want to know which CPU core you have and what Bios your running. Those are the two important things on this issues at the moment but save us all trouble and do a complete set of specs for your signature. and then we will help you.

I have not run MEMTEST, but i've tried other ram, with the same problem. I've also tried different vid cards, such as a Radeon 7000, a 9600 pro, and a nVidia mx440, all of which worked flawlessly. Now in the bios, i have the AGP Fast write set to Off, the aperature set to 256mb, and the  VLink 8x support is disabled (therefore set to 4x). The primary graphics adapter is set to AGP. The AGP Frequency is set to the default, and so is the voltage. ALSO, when i was talkin with MSI, then sent me an updated bios. the bios file says 3.36, but in the actual bios, it says 3.31. is this anything to worry about? I have not done driver clean, or used the Omega drivers yet, but i will do that now. Please reply if you can help or if you need more information.
    1) why set fast write to off?  mine is on.
    2) why set the aperature so much higher than the available onboard ram on the 9700?

I've used Live Update to update my board and SATA controller, but in device manager, I'm informed that the SATA controller cannot start.  During startup, I have no option to configure my two new SATA drives, and there's no evidence that my system detects them whatsoever.

  • Boot and OS install issues with K8T Neo2 F

Can anybody shed light on my difficulties?
Assembled a new computer yesterday.  First power-on produced nothing except 3 (2,3,4) red leds on d-bracket.  After reading several postings, tried the following:
    Swapped around memory modules;
Did repeated JBAT1 data clears (NB if you happen to get a board with the V1.0 user guide, note that the JBAT1 diagram appears upside down - pin one is closest to the SATA slots (page 2 - 24).  The MSI downloadable user guide (V1.2) has that error corrected (page 2-25)
The only memory config that doesn’t produce three red leds is with one 512 stick installed in channel 3 (green).
Can now get to the point where Windows XP boots to the point where install is about to start, and then advises me that it can’t find a hard disk!
Have dis/reconnected the sata cable (using different cables) and checked the bios setup but can find nothing strange except that setup refers to the hard disk as BBS 0 (RAID) ST3120827AS - the reference to “RAID” worries me.

Paul, there have been people here that have had to strip their  system down to the bare minimum hardware to get windows to complete the install, so try that. I had trouble completing my windows install as long as I was trying to install the RAID drivers at F6. So I ignored the prompt at F6 and windows installed fine. Then I installed my RAID drivers afterward.
These things are extremely sensitive when it comes to memory. I had the same problem you are having. Mine was cured by a BIOS upgrade to ver. 3.3. The simplest way to do it is to use "Live Watch". It will locate BIOS ver 3.3 for you, and download it to a floppy along with the flash program, and make it bootable all in one easy step. Then all you have to do is boot from the floppy you just made, and follow the instructions. Very simple.
I've read all these stickies and posts now going way back, and IMHO anyone who wants to use RAM thats not on the list should do so at their own risk. Interestingly enough, the recommended list from MSI is not the same as the list from AMD. And the memory manufacturers have their own lists of RAM that they say will work with this board. I'm using 2x 512 sticks of GEIL from the MSI recommended list.
Check out these links to see what I mean. By the way, if you haven't noticed, most of the older posts about memory problems are with respect to the K8T Neo FIS2R which is a socket 754 single channel board, so although they are similar, they're not the same. My point is just because his K8TNeo FIS2R works fine with brand "X" RAM doesn't mean your K8T NEO2 FIR will.

  • Random reboots K8T Neo2 and 3200+

I am still getting the random reboots. I have noticed the most reboots when having alot of windows open in my web browser, both firefox and maxthon. I have done full virus scan and run both adaware and spybot with no change. Right now I am using 1 windows with my browser and no problem. I can also play games that have high system requirements, AAO and BF2 neither causes any problems. Anyone have a answer or clue to what is happening? Core center says my cpu temp is running what I call wide 37-51 degrees. The fan speed changes alot also. Is there a way to lock the fan speed and still use core center? I don't remeber but think my Intel and 865PE Neo2 setup the fan speed stayed constant.
    Thanks

Not much we can tell you here. Compag, E-Machine, Gateway, HP ,Dell and other OEM companies get boards from makers like MSI. However in most cases they are built specific to those OEM companies. You can't use MSI Bios's, Drivers or Utilities to make them work due to changes from the retail market MSI boards. As far as the Semperon AMD.COM will have those details for you.
The best source of info on your compaq is through Compaq.

Probably because the 3000+ only has a 9x maximum multiplier, whereas the 3200+ will go to 10x.
2600MHz at 9x means a FSB of 289MHz and ram at 289MHz for best performance.  Will your ram do 289MHz?  Of course you *can* run your memory and fsb async, but I prefer not to.
